This is not your father's runner!
Kid Tripp is a runner that just made its way to the ps4 and vita not long ago. The premise of the game is Kid has recently landed on an island which he is running for his life. This is what you would call a Runner where you are forced to run and must respond accordingly to the environment. Kid's gameplay is somewhere in the middle of a nes age platformer and a runner, leading us to its greatest strength. Style is something Kid Tripp has in spades! It crashes into the experience with the idea of "this is what a runner would have been like in the late 80s". As with any runner, you are forced into running into challenges, jumps, and baddies. you have 3 actions you can along the way, jumping which is pressure sensitive. Rock throw because jumping baddies is not always safe or possible. Lastly, you can slow down on normal setting.
The tight controls accentuate the precision feeling of platformers of yesteryear of the likes of Mario or ninja gaiden. When you mess up it was on you, not the game and you feel each mistake was your own. To further this feeling of capturing a bygone style continues with the second man of the two-man team bringing a very short a sweet post. The chip sounds of this game come off as timeless and something you will find yourself humming to pretty quickly. Overall Kid Tripp is a short run with 4 worlds that are taken straight from the olden days of platformers and captures the feel of that well. Given the smaller scope of the game, it feels best on the Vita's smaller screen though, looks and sounds great from the bigger screen accompanied by the ps4. If you are itching for a refreshing take though short on the genre or find yourself wanting a few afternoons of running, this is one challenging and interesting to get just that.
Pros:
Style is the name of the game with the entirety being a homage to many games.
Controls are top notch when you win you feel it was your win. When you lose you know it was on you, no feeling cheated here
Cons:
Hidden machines, there are some tricks that seem out of place or necessary to and the game never mentions this or how it works.
I.e jumping on water.
Challenge is an understatement here. If you are no to runners or precision controls this may be a bit more then you expect.
With this all said I give this game a final rating of:
6.5
Kid Tripp is very much worth looking at if you are a fan of simplicity and high-end retro appeal. If you like running and a hard challenge this is for you. If you are more casual brace yourself and practice and be patient.… Expand
