Not everyone has these issues, but it seems like most consle players, especially those with higher end consoles for some reason are experiencing low resolutions and horible textures. This game runs at 720p on a PS4 Pro. The cutscene look atrocious across the board though, but on pc the game has much better graphics.

In terms of gameplay, it feels like it has removed a lot of what made just cause 3 and 2 so fun. There is no liberating bases any more. That’s right. You are given little motivation to blow stuff up in a just cause game. Each region requires one crap mission to take it over, useally defending a terminal and that’s it. While the new weather is cool, other than the tornado it feels underused. The guns don’t feel as impactful as just cause 3 same with the teather. Everything feels to light. The driving is improved somewhat, but the lack of any options to change controls for anything is annoying. The explosions look cool, but until they patch it on consoles I would avoid it.
Also the AI is awful, running off cliffs and crashing into each other for example. Honestly a massive disappointment. The only real positives are that the map is Niven and diverse, and the balloons are a fun inclusion. That doesn’t make up for the fact you are given nothing interesting to do in the map however. The game can be fun, but not until they fix it. Avoid until patched, and even then, expect something worse than previous entries.

I wish I could give this game a higher score but the graphics and frame rates are so bad it ruins it. I cant believe they released it in such bad shape. I truly hope they release a patch to fix these issues cause I can see this game being a blast as Im having fun with it as it is now,but without it being fixed its just not worth the $60 price tag, buyer beware.

The game is in early access state. My advice is wait to buy this one - wish I did. My sense is they needed to sacrifice graphics quality substantially to support the physics and framerate. Graphics-wise, I was expecting a Ghost Recon Wildlands quality world - not even close. As for story/missions, so far seems to be very weak. Game needs another 6-12 months of development.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. It's bad, the explosions look worse, the missions are boring and repetitive (even more than the third), the new squad system is terrible, half the vehicles are re-used from Just Cause 3, the villains are both lame (Espinosa and Gabriella), whereas the third bothered with a paragraph of description for each location to have a bit of lore and fun this one at best bothers with two sentences, aiming feels horrible and they somehow managed to make the vehicles even less drivable as now I can't roll for one kilometer without crashing and if I try to turn I end drifting like a maniac. They also added two things I hated about the third: time limits which are infuriating and having to spend ten seconds hacking in the middle of a battlefield with grenades, snipers and soldiers everywhere. And lastly the AI is braindead and during a certain mission Luis will just drive off a bridge instead of forward and because of that I cannot finish this mission. Oh at the time of writing this I found something else, in Just Cause 3 you could bring a vehicle to a garage to unlock it well now you have to move into these terrible regions to get a specific vehicle which means if it's at the other end of the map well you're in for a while. Oh wait it gets worse: they took out one of my favorite aspects of Just Cause 3, bridge destructibility, I have played the game for three days straight and I haven't found a single bridge I could destroy and there are these stupid challenges where you have to go through a ring with a vehicle that is in front of you, just why? And I love how they tried having diversity with a few biomes but even in each of these biomes every town looks the same (even more than Just Cause 3), every town I found in the desert was literally the same. They also promoted the tornado in the trailers but it is really rare and I have only found it once and it lasted for two minutes. As for Oscar Espinosa's death scene here was my reaction: What a lame ending... His plane just explodes? That's it? I thought he would fall off a cliff or something. Another kick in the balls by this awful game. Hitman 2's graphics and story were a downgrade but at least IO tried and I can respect them for it, Square Enix however just said it's Just Cause, people will buy it and shipped a broken product. Also IO got dumped by Square Enix so I can understand whereas here Square Enix is big enough to make a good game regardless. Expand

This game is as reptitive as the other, fill to the brink with defend this NPc, or defend this place while they throw all their army at you! Story is as forgetable as before. Also, this game was rushed as there is alot of technical glitches and the game doesn't as great as before, especially the water, which is one of the worst I've ever seen. I can't recommend this game unless you love the other games to death, and if you're new to the series, start by 2 or 3 instead, you'll have more fun. Expand

It took me a while to get into JC2 but ended up loving it. Was eager for the follow up and wasn't disappointed by JC3 as it improved the previous installment in every way. It took me a while to get into JC2 but ended up loving it. Was eager for the follow up and wasn't disappointed by JC3 as it improved the previous installment in every way. So I had been looking forward to this forth installment since I heard about it. However I was so disappointed after playing and ended up making notes of my thoughts as I played through:

    The Opening
    -------------------
JC3 - Lovely cinematic movie introducing the main characters. Riding on the back of a plane with a rocket launcher; over the top and fun (what you expect)
JC4 - Gentle walk through some snow (seriously?)

    Weapons
    -------------
JC4 - Removed the C4 and Grenades and replaced with a terrible 2 gun swap system & upgrades to the grapple; possibly okay if you're just going around aimlessly to have fun, but useless and not really required during the game. It's also complicated to switch between and remember what each one does during play. Also due to the stupid weapons system you end up constantly looking around for damn ammunition

    Map
    -------
    JC3 - Full of villages/different military base types/collectibles/etc.
JC4 - One big Black Hand base per area and very little else

    Game Progress & Design
    -------------------------------------
JC3 - Liberating lots of smaller locations; each with items that needed to be located and destroyed; fun and gave you a sense of progress & accomplishment
JC4 - Nothing; technically majority of the missions can be completed without blowing stuff up and just activating a few consoles; as no real record of progress for destroying stuff it feels very flat and pointless. When you do go to destroy something half the time it seems to be surrounded by those on your own side, which again makes it feel flat and pointless in doing so

JC3 - Lots of extra tasks to complete; i.e. collecting audio tapes that built on the background story, points on the map to find. Those I didn't much like (the wing-suit and flying challenges) could be skipped as there was so much else to do and these weren't an integral part of the game (although the ground races were fun)
JC4 - Nothing much to do on the map (apart from the main bases) and some stupid 'making a film' set off side tasks that mirror the wing-suit and flying challenges.

JC3 - With the garage mechanic you had a reason to explore the map for new vehicles and take them to the garage; again a sense of progress and discovery / collection
JC4 - Absolutely no reason to go looking for cars as no real challenge relating to them (apart from needing specific vehicles for the Movie sub-plot, all of which seem to be sitting conveniently next to the task). Might as well order up a helicopter or use the wing suit to get around. No real incentive to explore the ground / main map areas

JC3 - Well designed map and game interface
JC4 - Atrocious mix of menus and key presses were constantly going into the wrong menu section and even when in them just seemed thrown together and generally an ill thoughtout mess

    Longevity
    --------------
JC3 - Even after completing the main story-line I still wanted to go back and finish the other elements, ie. find more of the vehicles, make sure all audiotapes and collectibles had been found. Eager to pay for and download the additional DLC packs for more fun
JC4 - Struggled to keep playing after a couple of sessions as it felt like a massive downgrade on the gameplay and quite frankly f***ing lazy design

Since making these notes I have downloaded and installed two patches and tried to go back to the game, but just leaves me cold and incredibly disappointed.

Both are right and wrong at the same time.

If you are a fan of the Just Cause series you will definitely enjoy gameplay on the fourth game installment. Some tweaks made to your equipment and weapons add a lot of fun and possibilities to wreck havoc in Solis. Flying with the wingsuit never felt better, tethering works as it should. While having fun in the game you can definitely feel the vibe that the previous Just Cause games have had.

Those were the good sides of the game. If the score relied only on gameplay and mechanics it would have easily grabbed 9s and 10s along the way. Unfortunately, Just Cause 4 is like a beautiful creature hidden in an ugly and deformed body. LOTS of textures are of poor quality, many of them load just before you reach them and during my playtime never I had a feeling that there's any Anti-Aliasing in place. Distant objects looks pixelated, not to mention the tornado which was advertised so widely... It's truly a shame that the wonderful land of Solis is for most of the times on a lower graphical level then Medici, it's predecessor. Don't get fooled by the wonderful looking clips on the web which obviously relate to a high-set PC version of the game.

Other flaws? Solis, although vast and diverse, offers little to do. The land liberation system has been reduced to a minimum - winning one battle and advancing your rebel troops, that's it. Not to mention that most of the missions in the game are very similar - obtain some data and then survive a wave of enemies. Stunts have been simplified in a hard way but this, from what I hear, is being received both positively and negatively. Enemy AI is very limited and quite you can accomplish missions without even being shot at.

Coming to a close I would like to add another positive aspect which is the sound - both the music and sound effects are at a very nice level, you can now listen to some radio while driving a car (which is still a total pain but I promised this part would be a positive one).

If I had a high quality PC I would probably give Just Cause two extra points but there are some aspects where not even an awesome graphic card will help. I feel that the game has been released in a rush and at some point the developers have ran out of ideas.
With all the backlash the game is receiving and the suspicion of promoting tweets and reviews of users which have presumably been paid to praise the game, I am disappointed that Avalanche is sitting there quietly.
I hope the game will receive proper patches so that the Just Cause series will not be a Lost Cause series.

The good: Who doesn’t like blowing things up? The explosions look great in this title. The new grappling hook add ons are interesting. Some of the character dialogue can be lighthearted and funny. I appreciated how easy it is to get around the map, and loading times are way down compared to previous entries. Messing around with the new weather system is fun. I love the radio, normally something I love in games. Great selection of tunes.

The bad: This is a game that looks great from afar, but once you look at the textures, yikes. Some of them are awful. The skybox often jitters and disorients me. Flying in a plane looks like playing GTA San Andreas era graphics. Liberating towns is gone, replaced by moving your frontline forward. This can get pretty boring. There’s no incentive to blow anything up other than to get a notification that you’ve caused enough chaos for a new squad or two. As such, exploring towns and cities is essentially pointless. You can just fly around military bases and complete the objective as fast as possible because there is no requirement of destroying enough equipment to liberate. Missions to liberate regions are boring and repetitive. They are the same over and over, and I got sick of them fast. There’s a horrible timed mission that repeats several times in different locations that made me so frustrated, I went to play another game until I cooled down. Cars have been mostly recycled from JC3, so much so that I wondered if I was playing the correct game. Driving itself is a floaty, weird affair that can sail you across a whole field when you least want it. Tanks handle like they’re on giant wet bars of soap, and planes can be really unresponsive in turning.

In conclusion: As an avid player of the previous games in this series, I was disappointed. Several steps back were taken here. While this game shines when it comes to blowing up giant piles of fuel tanks and tethering cars to balloons, that’s about all it does really well. I would advise waiting for a price drop if you are interested in this game. This game is a perfectly average affair. Perhaps making it more unforgivable on the back of Red Dead 2, and Horizon Zero Dawn’s open world masterpieces. It is not worth $60. Please get your act together for the next game, if there is one.

Whoever made the decision on releasing a half ready game at Avalanche studios needs to be get rid of. Some people mainly complaining about the graphics, which are secondary. I just don't recognize any of the elements that I loved from previous entries in the series in JC4.

It's horrible and sad to see a franchise bomb like this.

I don't see there being much demand for any further entries in the franchise after this.

Just Cause 3 was great. It was all about destroying (Just Cause - damage!), freeing villages. Then also finding collectibles and getting new vehicles. So it really had a lot of content and basically something for every type of player.

Now, Just Cause 4... let me go ahead and write: What shallow game you guys produced! Cinematics are poor and look like they haven't done much since

Now, Just Cause 4... let me go ahead and write: What shallow game you guys produced!

Cinematics are poor and look like they haven't done much since JC3. Seriously. The game started with the cinematic intro and I thought: YIKES! - In a negative way of course.

Now. Little Story introduction... You have to free the whole map from the evil suppressors. This hasn't changed. But now you have to build up chaos by destroying things (usually stuff that has red paint on them - Tanks, Antennas, Satellite dishes, generators) so people will join your cause. You need a certain amount of troops to free an area...

The world feels empty even though there are people walking and driving around.
Story mission and freeing areas basically are 3 kinds of missions:
    1. Go to X download something. Defend. - Go to Y download something. Defend. Etc.
    2. Go to X hit a button or start something then reach 6-8 other points in a certain amount of time.
    3. Destroy something.

    Side missions:
    1. Find and solve 5 tombs (was the only entertaining bit, so I could produce some guides from this lame game)
    2. Do some stunts with a vehicle or with your wing suit. (Most of the time the vehicle is nearby and you just have to go through a ring with it. Most of them are no challenge at all - the wing suit ones are a bit harder...
    3. Capture a car, drive to a destination to pick someone up, destroy the car by driving it down a cliff, bridge, etc.

    Conclusion:
It wants to be a AAA or AA title and sell expensive. But this is not worth it. If you really want to play this (I regret buying it) wait for a year and get it cheap. This is really embarrassing and I hope - with an aching heart thinking about JC3 - this was the last of Just Cause. My fears are that Part 5 could even be worse!

Antialiasing isn't there, compulsory motion blur makes me nauseous, excessive grain, perspective issues while driving, water textures from 2002, 2d train tracks, 2d waterfalls, lighting issues, cutscenes look like early gamecube titles, hair texture is a joke, distracting pop-ins, generational engine has a dissolve effect that's almost hilarious it's so bad for a AAA game in 2018.

Gameplay is mediocre, too much empty space, capital city is sparse (5 buildings?). No incentive to blow things up, no liberating towns.

Tornado and extreme weather can't save this in its current state, no matter how hard the PR team pushes it.

I would NOT get this game unless there is a SIGNIFICANT patch. I refunded and will be calling this release out everywhere, I simply cannot believe this got released. There is a massive difference between gameplay videos and trailers before launch and the actual game on PS4.

Played on both PS4 pro and slim, no real difference in anything.

Without doubt the worse AAA title release in my living memory, down there with FO76.

    Real shame.

This is likely one of the worst open world games ever made. It had one fun thing- Tornadoes, that's it. Nothing else to care about. When you are in the thick of a fight or soaring through the skies of Solis in (or on) a plane, or gliding through the desert with your wingsuit, a patch of ground that doesnt quite look like a masterpiece is incredibly insignificant. Another thing people complain about is how the game does not really provide much fun through story and side missions, this is because as anyone who has played the just cause series will know, the game merely provides a space for you to make your own fun. If you are very reliant on story driven linear games just handing you your objectives then you wont enjoy just cause, so dont buy it, but if you are good at making your own fun than just cause, despite having flaws, is the perfect game for you. The world is boring and empty, just like the rest of the JC games. Is there any multiplayer to make up for the boring open world? Oh that's right, there is no multiplayer. So once you beat the story, this game will collect dust. The developers heavily advertised the tornado for this game, which is nothing more than a gimmick that gets old fast. If you have GTA V on PC, you're better off downloading a tornado mod and save $60. I recommend you only pick this game up if it drops to $10, or wait until it's free on PS Plus.

Soldiers open fire on you and you tether two of them to balloons, sending them to their airborne fate. You mow down the rest with your trusty machine gun, since they are not dangerous enough to warrant unleashing one of your precious drones. The tank you shot explodes, and the shockwave makes a nearby missile launcher go crazy and discharge all of its missiles randomly. Things start to blow up, with explosive barrels adding to the mayhem. You tether to a building's wall and launch into the air, while all around you the world seems to erupt in flames. Your trusty, self-folding parachute slows your descent, allowing you to tether an enemy helicopter that has opened fire on you. Two seconds later, bye bye pilot, you are in control of the chopper and rain lead on the enemy reinforcements.
Yes, none of it is remotely believable, but it's spectacular and a lot of fun. People criticize textures and models, but forget that this game does not have small levels that limit geometry. A bird's eye view of the map is always one second away, without frame rate drops or loading delays. If you think you can have a huge game world that morphs into super hi-res graphics the moment you look at something near you, I have a Star Citizen to sell you. I mean, I just played Days Gone and apart from the looong loading times, I would often end up in a zone of the map which the game engine hadn't finished loading yet, sometimes falling through the ground to my doom! JC4 handles its world beautifully and with no such delays.
That said, I feel Just Cause 3 was indeed better. They tried to change the formula by adding different missions, but it's just as repetitive and somehow makes the experience worse. The intro of JC3 was smooth and bombastic, it made you wanna play the game. The intro of JC4 is essentially nonexistent. The new balloons make most of your weapons redundant against basic enemies, since they are deadlier and consume no ammo. Your old reusable explosives required you to jump into danger to place them, and were a better game device overall. Enemies used to have perfect aim, which was bad, but now cannot hit a barn from ten feet, which is just as excessive. Many small changes did not turn out as good as the designers hope, but I still recommend this game. If you've never played a JC before, though, go grab the 3, which you can probably buy for a pittance nowadays.
Ah, as of April 2020, I must say that I found no major bugs, the developers must have solved them all by now.

I agree with the already mentioned issues. Graphical schmutz abounds. A different kind of graphic schmutz that plagued JC 3 with its egregious frame rate drops during intense moments of mayhem....and, in a game like Just Cause, you do not want egregious frame rate drops during moments of intense mayhem. You want the frame rate to hold......so one can appreciate the carnage in all its glory. Because (why? Because....or, rather....just 'cause! :D . *ahem*....sry ;) glorious carnage is really what Just Cause is all about, in a nutshell. The missions.....well, yes. The missions are "stupid".....repetitive and uninspired, for the most part. Not that I really care. Why?, you ask? Why go over there across this beautiful island world to free whomever from whatever held in wherever base loaded with enemy all tricked out in Stark Industry's full spectrum of modern military weaponry? Just cause....that's why! Just 'cause I am OP....and the enemy is soft and stupid....and just 'cause the base is utterly bloated with paper thin skinned fuel tanks and satellite dishes and giant electric transformer thingamaboppers just begging to be released into incindiary glory....and heli gunships/troop transports lazily floating around, holding still just long enough to ignite with a shoulder rocket trailing a beautiful plume of smoke and then erupting into a gorgeous orange/red blossoming fire ball with a liquid-transparent concentric expanding shock wave of energy preceding it ....I mean, my god.....whoever's running the explosion design team at Square Enix deserves a week long, fully-comped and platinum-tiered trip to Vegas for their work on this game. Mind......*ka-doosh*.....blown! :D As long as there's a reasonable degree of diversity in the missions....some opportunity and need to take cover and apply something reminiscent of tactics when overwhelmed during firefights...I'm good! 'Cause, let's be honest.....sheer numbers is the only way the AI is ever gonna get the upper hand in this game. Idiots! :D. Just gimme my best friend Mr Grapples, the occasional weapon crate, and droves of weapon/ammo dropping AI...and miles upon miles of lush scenery to parachute/wing suit over, and I'm a happy camper.

So yes, there's some graphical schmutz in terms of motion blur and fidelity that faulters when you look too close at the scenery. Pop ins, draw distance and all that jazz. Stuff that, maybe just maybe, can be cleaned up with patches over time. All in all, the gunplay is juicy......the capacity for mayhem is diverse and ever-present and the gadgetry is a hoot. All ingredients in the perfect recipe for "stupid fun" :D Crack a Corona, sit back....and enjoy!, all you fans of this particular guilty pleasure.

So when your girlfriend, mom, wife saunter in and watch what your doing, aghast and appalled at what she's seeing on the monitor and asks, "Why!? Just....why!?" Simply turn.....meet her eyes.....perform the signature Al Bundy couch maneuver with your non-dominant hand stuffed down the front of your pants, shrug your shoulders and say "Just 'cause, Peg......just 'cause" :D

Just cause 4 changes many things that were in just cause 3. The new grapple hook is fun to play around with. Movement is faster. Explosions are bigger, more powerful and more realistic. Ok sure, the graphics are not perfect (some poorly designed textures, crappy water, motion blur) but that doesn’t stop me from having a good time. Overall, the game is a blast to play.

To those who say the graphics are terrible: a game is never perfect. You can’t expect a perfect, realistic game all the time, so stop complaining and play. Video games were made for fun, not for arguing about graphics.

It's not Ghost Recon Wildlands level but then, Wildlands was intending to be realistic. The grappling hook has always been a favorite of mine in the Just Cause series and it gets a lot of extras in this game. Going back to the graphics, the best takeaway is that the load times are nearly non-existent most likely thanks to the lower graphics than PS4 owners are used to seeing on their console. (Full disclosure: I only buy download games from the PlayStation Store not disc-based. Still, after cut scenes and after areas are cleared... it shows a load screen and the bar doesn't even begin to fill when it pops up with Rico ready to go again.) I gave it a 9 out of 10 with the only knock against it being its ok graphics. It's definitely worth playing though... a fun and massive game that doesn't take itself too seriously. Expand

You can see what the developers learned from the shortcomings of the previous game (less grind and easier to complete), but to release a game that's not finished is a slap on the face. The graphics are horribile, with the cutscenes striking out as the most horribile. What the hell, SqEnix??

Main story is great, with some twists and jokes.
Game loading times between scenes and missions are several times faster than Just Cause 3.
Side missions may seem a bit confusing at first, but the game navigates the player so cleverly between side and main missions that it comes as a seamless transition from side to main missions. Personal opinion about gear mods - glad they are removed

Personal opinion about gear mods - glad they are removed them and only three options with various optimizations are available. Mods in Just Cause 3 made the player to grind the side missions. If not, the player would not have the grappling hook and other mods that made the game hard to beat.
    Explosions - fabulous.
    Voice acting - fantastic.

I just love Just Cause game series and I hope for two things:
    1. That developers understand clearly what is wrong with this game (obviously the graphics and glitches that are more expected at beta version of the game, not the finished product)
    2. That Just Cause 5 will see the light in a few years and that developers would not be scared of bad reviews.

    To other critics:
Let me tell you the most important thing. Game industry is a business. Someone has to remind you that. And here I am.

I am sure all this "unfinished product" situation happened because Avalanche and Square Enix found themselves in uncomfortable position -- many great games recently released, the launch date already official, all guidelines to publish the game to PS Store passed, and then there is Christmas time coming with lots of kids, teenagers and adults -- a wide variety -- of people waiting for something to buy as a gift.

I am pretty sure almost everyone would do the same thing and would release a product that needs finishing touches with a promise to patch the game in couple of weeks instead of missing an opportunity to sell more copies of the game in Christmas time.

Therefore, I don't see why this game should have worse reviews than previous games. When developers release the fix for the problems, not many of the reviewers would change their score, just because they already have their feelings hurt... And most of these reviews would not reflect the true value of the game.

Want to get into the "rebellion"? Sure you do. After a story and plot development, a high schooler could plan better, you're gonna feel jazzed to skip through cutscenes from the start. Now bring on the fking tedium. You want bang bangs and destruction but also want a sense of accomplishment like youre doing something right?

This brings you to territory mode. Most of the territory you have to unlock by doing a mandatory Fk you base capture; some you can unlock just by destroying a lot of crap and manually selecting - no prob with that. But thats only 10% of them. Most you gotta manually travel all over the map for and do some stupid base nonsense for. Sure, game still has helicopters right? Guess what: Devs figured out you like the helicopters of the last game, so forget that. They have been retarded to all hell, making them as useful as belly button lint against a house fire. Youre going to be traveling with the equivalency of a donkey as you do one of 4 things, slowly "flying" around with your stupid grappling hook and retro 70's wingsuit across each base about 30 times if you plan to complete this cluster fk of a game. You are guaranteed to that ever base you will be doing a combination of these 4 Id-rather-being-getting-my-teeth-cleaned chores: 1. hack a sparse collection of consoles for no damn reason, 2. drive car bombs into water for no damn reason, 3. blow up a collection of generators/bullsh*t for no damn reason ( which a helicopter with missle launchers and machine guns cant do cause your lame-ass grappling hook has to remove a piece of tinfoil that's protecting them) or 4. spend 10 minutes zipping around with your dumb, stupid grappling hooked and wingsuit to find a special model suxk-a-who crap vehicle that opens the magical special door that allows you to do one of options 1-3 FOR NO DAMN REASON. Best is when you have a base that puts all 4 of these repetitive retard activities together so you can waste 1 hour on this crap, just for 1 stupid base that does nothing more than unlock a car/gun/color parachute you couldn't give a fk less about. But hey, thats the only way you can feel like you've achieved something and progress in the special-ed narrative of this nonsense backstory.

    Sounds like fun dont it?

Screw the devs for fking up a simple concept that worked. Wait to catch this in the bargain bin, or just stick with JC3.

This might be the first time in history that the sequel looked worse. Actually, this game is so hilariously bad, that I should not waste my time coming up with words to describe its failing as a consumer entertainment product. But there is something fun about blowing things up, so it is important to understand how Square Enix got this game so wrong.

I will give Just Cause 4 credit for not crashing. The previous game, Just Cause 3, crashed constantly. Also, I am playing Just Cause 4 on PS5 and the load times are a non-issue. This game might be a nightmare on PS4 because Rico will often instantly die in mysterious explosions. These are the only accolades I can give Just Cause 4.

The low quality of the graphics in this game is both stunning and confusing. Put simply, the game looks like dog **** The lighting is bizarrely too bright and too dark, lights flicker constantly, models are pixelated, hair texture is non-existent, shadows appear in odd places, and most of the environment is the same low quality rocks, trees, buildings, and cars on repeat. Just Cause 3 looked great. Why would a developer create worse looking models for Just Cause 4? Did they lose the license to the engine they used for Just Cause 3? Did Square Enix really charge $60 for this turd?

I might excuse the bad graphics if it meant the rest of the game ran smooth as butter. Overwatch and Fortnite are great examples of games that trade graphics for performance. I wish Just Cause 4 had done the same. Flying around in the game, you will see pop-in. You will also see tanks fly into the air for no reason and helicopters materialize out of nowhere. In an action filled firefight, the screen will go white as Rico is obliterated by some unseen force. The a.i. will walk NPCs into corners, have enemies stand still while you lay into them with a machine gun, and send escort mission NPCs through burning wreckage. The vehicle models you blow up are sometimes replaced with wrecked versions of the vehicle and sometimes with skins that show a blackened texture. There was no attempt to simulate real destruction.

The most heartbreaking failure of this game is the failure to fulfill the premise of the Just Cause game series: destroying everything. For starters, you do not need to destroy enemy assets anymore. What you do is create "chaos" to earn troops who will take regions. First you have to conduct a mission at a base. There are only 3 kinds of missions so get ready to rinse and repeat. Once the mission is complete, you select the region on the map and send in some troop. There is no fighting for Rico. The map changes color and the region is taken over. The thing about earning "chaos" is that you can easily earn it from fighting the enemy, and by midway through the game I had enough troopers on standby that destroying fuel tanks and radio towers was no longer necessary.

Destroying things for fun is also not as fun as Just Cause 3 or Just Cause 2. You have many of the same tools. The problem is the setup. Like Just Cause 3, every base and city is very far away from each other. Perhaps to compensate, the game has enemies teleport to the player rather than travel from the far edges of visible space. There is no point in using a crashed bus to set up a roadblock or dropping a fuel tank from a cargo helicopter. Even in bases, the goal is never to destroy things but to flip switches or activate a computer console that is oddly and conveniently placed on the roof of a building. Dear Square Enix, no one wants to play a game about flipping switches.

The story and voice acting are barely worth mentioning. No one plays these games for the story. The story also peaked with Just Cause 2 when Rico fought a dictator while riding nuclear missiles. The least Square Enix can do for players is have voice acting that isn't flat and repetitive and cutscenes that look better than a game from 2001. I actually prefer for the story to be in-game. Maybe put some of that cutscene budget into models and textures!

If I didn't mentioned the weather effects in the game then it is because they look terrible and offer nothing that Just Cause 4 needed to be a decent game. If Just Cause is going to innovate, then start with having every enemy building destructible. Muhahaha.

All-in-all, this game is a low effort cash grab that killed the Just Cause franchise. I cannot see how I would pay $60 for another Just Cause game. In fact. Because of the failings of Just Cause 3, I never bought Just Cause 4. The game was a PlayStation Plus "free" game for me. If you pay more than "free" for this game, you overpaid.

In my opinion, there are only two positive or unique things about JC3. The wingsuit gameplay and the world design. I consider JC3's map one of the most beautiful of all games. JC4's map is far worse. Bigger but way duller.

Textures are constantly loading in, sometimes you find yourself falling through a texture that's supposed to be solid but hasn't loaded yet. Controlling Rico feels more of the same, but the driving mechanism is as always bad. It does however seem to do okay when you drive fast vehicles. Driving slow vehicles in areas with trees is terrible, vehicles handles bad, goes slow, and seem stuck many times when you hit debris. The Camera acting crazy at times. You are better off on foot and wingsuit or aerial vehicles when travelling around.
The world is large and nice made, but lacks content. In fact, this game seems to struggle with the typical problems open world game has: Content and lack of diverisity.

It removes some features from JC3 like grenades.

Just Cause 4 is just another sandbox game that brings nothing new to the table. If you are looking for mindless destruction with a terrible story, this is a game for you. If you’re looking for something deeper, look elsewhere.

If it continues like this, the series will die.

A shallow yet occasionally thrilling sandbox that doubles down on explosively stupid antics. The campaign is too grindy for its own good, and Rico's looks are fading, but this B-tier open world can still charm. [Issue#158, p.78]
