Like this delicate butterfly lost in vapors and cogs of LIMBO,

INSIDE is a state of grace.
    An accomplishment.

Thank you Arnt Jensen, thank you Playdead.

P.S. think of Stranger Things as you start this game out and you will be drawn in immediately. I like to consider this a companion piece to that show. In fact they could build a show or movie around this game.

This game is a worthy successor to Limbo (and may I say, a superior one) with its stunning visuals, dark, rich atmosphere, ambient music, smart puzzles, incredible attention to detail, its gripping story told without words, its perfect ending, and last but not least, its realistic animation.

Another 10 for Playdead. I always tell people, if you've ever seen the movie "7", this game will remind you of it, because everything that happens is continually more and more shocking until the final mind-bending ending. This game is indescribable. If you haven't played it you are missing out on one of the greatest games of all time. Period.

It looks beautiful. Lighting and animation are top tier. Image quality is flawless. Physics are class leading.

They never bothered me and I only had to sit and think once or twice, and I never felt as though I was breezing through it with ease or anything. Every time I died, I thought, "I could have avoided that if I was thinking," which is a good indicator of the game's fairness.
Inside certainly isn't for everyone; many gamers will scoff at the game's simplicity and artsy-fartsyness, dismissing the platformer as "indie hipster crap." If you enjoy indie hipster crap and you have a roomy wallet, then this may be the game for you.

The game is Limbo but with prettier graphics and not as much thinking needed. I think I was stuck on one puzzle for a total of 30 seconds and other than that it was a case of running from one end of the map to the other end of the map.

The atmosphere is great, the graphics look wonderful, the sound is awesome. The story.... uhhhhhhh.

I would have liked something more here. Every single bit is up to you to decide on what you want it to be about. In a day and age of some amazing video game stories, from The Last of Us to SOMA, putting a bunch of random stuff on a screen isn't enough anymore.

And then the ending... if you want to call it that. There was no buildup whatsoever. When it happened I literally said out loud "this better not be the end" and sure enough the credits started to role.

I see nothing but scores of 10 everywhere I go and for once I can say I just don't understand it. It's nowhere near a bad game whatsoever but the amount of high praise seems insane to me.

INSIDE's gameplay is rather simplistic, and much easier than Playdead's previous effort, Limbo. I'm starting to see a trend in their games: no story, no tutorials, no explanation of what is going on or what you're supposed to do and no music. I'm starting to see a trend in their games: no story, no tutorials, no explanation of what is going on or what you're supposed to do and no music. While these elements worked for Limbo in a black-and-white setting, INSIDE feels like a bunch of ideas thrown together which on their own are fine but when grouped together form an incoherent mess. It seems the majority of players prefer an abstract story rather than one with actual meaning. It's much better to stay ambiguous and present your story as abstract and thought-provoking rather than actual committal.

There's a dystopian world which sets the backdrop for the events of the game, but everything else is a clear copy-paste of Limbo. While I congratulate Playdead on a visually unique presentation, because INSIDE is truly beautiful, the rest of the game falls short. Gameplay is simplistic, and I would argue too easy. For a puzzle platformer, the solutions are often easier to discern than the puzzles themselves.

But besides the puzzles, many players will find INSIDE enjoyable because of its story, or lack thereof. From what I can tell, there are three layers to the game's story. One is the obvious mind control, which seeks to keep the population of this dystopia in line. Second layer is the notion of free will. It brings up a fundamental question which can be easily missed: Are we truly free? If someone isn't mind controlled, are they truly an individual? The third and final layer is the notion of technology controlling the population, or other people. If there is mind control, there is a controller and the controlled. In either case, what is the fundamental reason for the mind control to happen?

Unfortunately, INSIDE raises too many questions without any answers. Simplistic gameplay, and basic platforming manage a decent game, but not overwhelmingly magnificent or a masterpiece as some would like to believe.

This is one of those special games, that without saying a lot, it makes you feel a lot.

This game in essence is a lot like Limbo, Journey, Ico, Shadow of the colossus etc. All those are games that rather than focusing on amazing gameplay itself, they focus on being emotionally strong and how to tell a story in a special way, with little worlds, just trying to transmit feelings in a rawer way. Having said that, if you enjoyed any of the games I’ve just mentioned, most likely you will enjoy this one.

Graphics and sound. Graphically speaking, you won’t find photo-realistic graphics etc., but artistically speaking the game is superb, they make use of a very limited variety of colours (mainly black, white and grey) to offer a fantastic gloomy setting that goes very well with the game’s universe. They might not be the best graphics, technically speaking, but artistically they made a great job at making the game’s world feel unique, gloomy, sad and tense, a lot like the game’s story itself. Sound is superb as well, there is little music, it’s mainly ambient sound and these are designed to maximise the game experience as in adding tension or whatever to the area you’re in, again sound direction is fantastic.

Gameplay, we’re basically speaking about a platforming-puzzle game. Platforming is kind of easy, it’s more about solving puzzles. I feel it is quite fun, as the game is a lot about finding out how to progress and make it to the next area rather than just jumping around. A few collectibles in the game as well, that require thinking to find them, it is quite a decent challenge. Bad thing about this, is that the game itself is not very long (maybe 4-6 hours) and the fact that it is about “finding out” (puzzle solving) how to advance, once you’ve done it, that’s it there is little replay value here. This is probably the main criticism that can be made to the game. However, it is a very satisfying experience, very intense a lot of times, that won’t disappoint. Said that, I wouldn’t pay too high of a price for this, but if it is for sale it is definitely worth, but be aware of the game’s length.

Summarising, fantastic and unique platforming-puzzle game, it does an amazing job at making the player feel the intensity of the situations (e.g. when a dog chases you to kill you, you’ll feel real tension and urge to flee). It is a game that emotionally says a lot, and won’t leave you indifferent. Just know that although intense in a lot of ways, this is a short journey (4-6 h). If you liked Limbo, Journey, Ico, Shadow of the colossus, the last guardian etc. that kind of game, I think you should definitely give this one a try. If you didn’t, spend your money elsewhere as you probably won’t enjoy Inside that much.

This is a conflicting game for me. This game has some standout moments that really tug at my intrigue. The world is barren but filled with nods to how this world operates. There are moments in puzzles that feel very satisfying in the moment and then that just feel like they are there as merely only an obstacle, which I guess is what puzzles are, but a lot felt like you could see the goal and that made it more rewarding. I love how violent deaths are and the blankness of the characters throughout this game reminds me of a fascist government ruling with some experimental things ala Akira. But I think its best part is also its greatest weakness, obscurity. There is so much environmental storytelling that it oozes intrigue, but it also doesn't hold me enough because it isn't wholly tangible. Maybe I missed something? Maybe I didn't care enough to scrounge for every bit of detail while playing? I don't know, but the ending part of the game (albeit there are some really cool moments in there too) I didn't like. When the ending credits hit my screen, it was a sigh of defeat than a joy of finishing something wonderful.

All of the hard work the team has put forth is incredibly evident. Whether it's the meticulously crafted set pieces, or the refraction of a flashlight peering through the environment, it's all wonderful. This game is marketed as a puzzle-platformer, but in almost every instance, the puzzles don't feel like puzzles at all. They are overcome with realistic, logical solutions that will only occasionally slow down the player pressing onward, and the game is better for it. The atmosphere is terrific, and the linear nature is perfect for the $20 price tag. The game is on the short side, which is to be expected for this type of indie game, although it's intrinsically worth much more based on the quality of the product. After my third play through, I can say it was $20 very well spent. Technically, the game is almost flawless. During my second play through I noticed one instance of clipping, but it's hardly distracting, and doesn't affect the gameplay in any way. The frame rate is rock solid too. My only criticism is the way the music is implemented, or rather are not implemented during certain moments. There are a few instances I thought music could have added to the tension or subtlety of what was happening on screen. It's really the only thing keeping it away from being an absolute masterpiece. But it's still a must play, must own gem. It has a dark, perhaps deeply profound narrative that deserves to be played, and replayed for years to come. Expand

The game also has a beautiful art style. LIMBO had a black and white filter to the entire game, but the color palette in INSIDE reminds me more of Sin City, how only certain parts of the world are colored. So how is the gameplay? Well, it's surprisingly awesome. I heard someone complain that the game feels like it plays itself. In certain parts of the game, this is true. However, most of the game is filled with well-crafted puzzles and challenges that had me scratching my head more than once. The physics help elevate the challenge and intrigue of some of these, which not many platformers take advantage of nowadays. Despite what I've talked about so far, nothing compares to the ending. It's phenomenal. Probably one of the best I've ever seen in a video game. The events that take place in the finale of INSIDE are too good to spoil, and you need to play the game for yourself to see how amazing it is. The only complaint I have about INSIDE is that even with the added bonus of going back and obtaining the secret ending, INSIDE is very short, only lasting about 3 hours long. Besides that, INSIDE is an incredible game that is just shy of being a masterpiece. I still recommend it to anyone, though. 9/10. Expand

Or demo version of the game, which you can complete in couple hours. I don't know why it is popular nowadays to release any incomplete product and call it a game. But when I pay money for a game, I would like to see at least some plot, especially if one was advertised.

If you're fast enough, you could beat this under 2 hours and get a refund for it on Steam. It would then be worth it for $0. For $20 it's a scam. The game is way too short.

What I did was start the game with no preconceptions, try to understand what the game was telling me, enjoy the way in which it dealt with life and death. The challenges were perfect in my opinion; often only stopping me just enough so that I could say "Ah, that's how you do it" then move on.

I found the ending bizarre too, but it certainly left me sitting there going "wow." Rather than previous games where I hit X immediately.

This game will make you smile, tense; even scared and maybe confused. But never have I played a game where this has happened.

Worthy follow up to LIMBO. But inside is one of the first films to truly make me feel uncomfortable and more than a little depressed. I love to play it, but only for limited periods of time. Still, it's a huge success, great puzzles, gorgeous visuals, and a haunting sound design.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. INSIDE is a spiritual successor to Limbo, even if only in terms of playstyle. Playing through INSIDE I felt very much at home as someone who has played and completed Limbo, so it should be understood that if you don't like Limbo then INSIDE is likely not for you.

I played this game as a co-op experience with my girlfriend. She's not much into playing games, but she was really intrigued by what was going on within the world. We had a fantastic time figuring out the puzzles and exploring the world, even if bleak.

There are some gruesome death scenes, and some very odd moments, mostly towards the end. The sound was appropriate and surprisingly well done. Some moments are enhanced very nicely by the sound.

As a whole I felt that the experience was worthwhile at the prices it goes on sale for, but I felt that INSIDE is too similar to Limbo, without a conclusive ending. Well worth a play, but not worth the high high praise it got.

I do believe it is a step down from the more challenging puzzles and platforming of Limbo. I did enjoy the black and white contrasts more there. Albeit, they did showcase Limbo, after all. These colour schemes work in their own way here and are more suited for the theme. However, those worked better for Limbo. What I am trying to state here is that if both games are compared on the basis of their colour usage and its effectiveness, then Limbo is better.

The story execution was better in Limbo as well. I liked its minimalistic approach more. Here, things were a bit ... too obvious? I do realize that both games approach two very different topics and Inside is more of a social commentary if anything else, but that is how I felt about it.

Regardless of what anyone thinks, I thought the game was very well put together, despite a few of its flaws. It is short and to the point kind of affair. Every gamer should give it a try as not everything is about big, flashy AAA titles. Limbo and Inside prove that many things can be done in a highly complex and effective manner by the use of simple controls and graphics. It reinforces the idea that "little things" make big differences sometimes.

I expect to see more from these highly talented Developers. They have my thanks, as I had a great time.

This game is creepy horror done right. While there little to no jump scares, The game creepy atmosphere and graphics as well as the music keeps me intense though out the whole game. The game also loves foreshadow which add to the intensity. The controls are very simple and easy to get use too. The narrative is brilliant. Overall a game worth it's 20 dollar price tag.

Inside is one of the best games I've played this year, and even has some replay value. 20$ is a perfect price for a game this fun and good looking, with an amazing story. (told through no words) The art in this game is stunning at times, and it's only "flaw", is that if you're looking for a very difficult puzzle game, this is not it. Highly, highly recommend.

There is honestly nothing bad about this game, sure its a 4 hour game but to be honest it doesn't matter because of its purchase price. It only cost $20 with amazing experience of story and puzzle solving. Puzzles in this game looks so interesting and fun that after you have solved that puzzle you will surely feel rewarded.

Everything in this game looks so beautiful and fresh that either its a water splash or dust particles in the air, everything is detailed. Its like they went through this game again and again so that nothing is left out and they nailed it completely.

Nothing more I can say because if I do then that can go into spoilers. So my final verdict for this game is 10/10 which means its a must buy game and you will surely love it.

An excellent atmospheric, twisted, clever, affecting, piquant, surprising, vicious and fascinating game. As much fun in a group (passing the controller on when you die) as it is playing alone in the dark, it definitely needs to be played to the end. Overall, we need these kinds of linear experiences, with all their faults, because we need games that are deliberately paced, even if they are not always "fun." Only a strong directorial vision, with its strong sense of progression, can allow games to tell unique stories that have an aura of magic about them, with every little scene filled with marvel. Such stories can touch children and adults alike.

Some set pieces i thought were astonishing, which seems odd to say for a game that effectively plays in two dimensions. The initial premise from the demo was great. A lone boy lost in the dark woods being chased by mysterious figures and their dogs, and a simple play mechanic with only two buttons and puzzles to solve while I dodged enemies. It was thrilling getting away from the sinister characters just in the nick of time and staying out of their view so I could progress.
This thrill got less and less as the game progressed, and the story veered more into the grotesque. I was pretty disappointed when I finished it, and while it's not a terrible game, I don't think the payoff justified the investment.

Inside Is from the same studio that made LIMBO, and they feel pretty similar, though INSIDE feels much more polished and varied and to me was a much more enjoyable, and much more confusing experience..
    |Confusing because of the story. . Not the puzzles…
Every puzzle I ran across in inside had a clever solution…
I understood what needed to be done most of the time, but it was up to me figuring out how to accomplish this...
There are many different puzzle types thrown in here, from timing, to pulling items, to distracting, to straight up mind control…
I don’t have a favorite puzzle type as they were all equally fun to figure out…
And the setting here its creepy and eaerie
you feel like there’s danger around every corner, really immersing you into its world…
as does the delivery of this games campaign as it slows down for a few stealth sections where you’re trying to blend in to not die..
As this entire game you’re being searched for…
so you have to dodge the sight of enemies as well as spot lights...
no sections too frustrating with perfectly placed checkpoints much like limbo…

The puzzles are mostly at a level of difficulty that makes them taxing but at a level that can usually be figured out with some time, patience and some thought. On the occasions where I truly did get stuck at a point, I never felt frustrated by the game but rather at my own abilities. This meant that, once I had figured out the next step, I had a truly sense of elation and achievement.

Visually, the game is dark and foreboding at points, again this is a positive. The sound is also minimal and helps sustain the heavy atmosphere.

The final sections of the game are like something out of a David Lynch film and I really urge all to go along for the ride.

Maybe the devs wanted the player to focus more on the subject matter at hand (control in society, unethical experimentation etc) but for me I found myself wanting it to just end soon (whereas I couldn't get enough of Limbo). There seemed to be a few mechanics that I felt were underused. For example there's a puzzle where you control a 'zombie' (for want of a better word) through ANOTHER zombie that you are controlling with your actual main character. I think this was the only time this type of interaction was used... such a shame because there could have been some great puzzles with that mechanic. Anyway I think there was a grand total of 2 puzzles that I enjoyed solving in the entire game. Maybe on a second run through I'll appreciate it more but even just the thought of doing that feels like a chore.

Still worth a play though, especially if you enjoyed Limbo. I don't think this deserves any less than a 7.

The game has flawless atmosphere and ambient, I was hoping for mindblowing finish and denounement after knowing the factory but unfortunately there was nothing like that. However apart from the ending it's a very unique fun to play game with great in game mechanics.

Short version - if you really liked their first effort, Limbo, you'll like Inside.

Six years in the making, every little aspect of this game - characters, animation, particle effects and smooth parallax background have all been slaved over by meticulous artists and what I can only assume is a relentless art director keeping everyone on the same dark, gloomy, uncomfortable page visually.

There's a few nods to Half Life/Portal in there as well. The puzzles are on the easy side - you're not really going to need a walkthrough, and there's quite a bit of a fluff levels where you're basically just running to the right. I could have used a little more exploration - side paths, and rooms and stuff to explore and interact with to learn a little more about the story. The ending is bananas.

I'm docking a few points because the game is really, *really* short. About three hours at most, and I was just getting into a groove when the credits rolled. If I can pick up Bloodborne for $20 and get 100+ hours of gameplay, this isn't much bang for your buck. This game needed to be about twice as long, with at least one cool new character mechanic (there are three 'modes' in the game, we really needed one or two more).

It will probably only take you 3-4 hours to finish but it will leave a lasting imprint on you for months to come. Haunting, creepy, satisfying, exciting, unsettling and very confusing. The ending will leave you alone with your thoughts probably forever. I still have no real understanding of it! It could be so so many things...

Gameplay-wise, there isn’t much here. While some games can make the most out of a few simple systems, there just wasn’t enough to keep me mentally engaged. In addition, the puzzles themselves were either fairly straightforward with little problem solving required or ridiculous obtuse and nearly unsolvable due to the absolutely atrocious amount of the screen that is just blacked out. Even on max brightness, I sometimes couldn’t see objects I was supposed to interact with.

Atmospherically, the game does a great job of making you feel on edge, but there are a few notable times where the music and ambient sounds will cut out - this isn’t a glitch, just poor sound design. It’s supposed to make you feel odd, unsettled and out of place. It mostly just made me realize that with the minimal visual cues provided by the game, I relied on the sound even more.

The story is...well let’s just say that if you want to know the story, you would be better served by watching an analysis on YouTube. Pragmatically speaking, all you need to know is that you are trying to do something because the game said so. It won’t tell you anything else directly.

The pacing is just awful. Graphics are great.

It’s not a bad game, just very bare bones and honestly should have been fleshed out more. I wouldn’t bother paying more than $10 for it unless you are really into the puzzle platforming genre.

I've been playing computer games since the 80's and Inside ranks very highly against all games from all era's. The style, mechanics, music, gameplay; everything about it is top notch, and the feeling of immersion is something quite special. The storyline and the world it plays out in is so compelling and thought provoking, it is truly a work of art. A genuine contender for best game of all time!

INSIDE is a very good video game and it must be among the best indie games.

It is quite similar to LIMBO (which I bought together with INSIDE in a single pack), though the aesthethics and the design of characters and settings are different: instead of shadows, things in INSIDE are built with a more realistic aspect -even when they are fictional-, and chiaroscuros are used as a resource

Gameplay is simple but enjoyable, and the puzzles are carefully planned (though some of them may be a bit confusing at times). The storyline is there, but maybe a bit vague. The game could have been richer in this sense (as well as LIMBO, probably). It is not too long, but I have never minded that.

Overall, I have the impression that INSIDE is too good a game to not have a 9, but at the same time it lacks something to have a 10.

I am a bit conflicted on Inside: I see a interesting premise and set of ideas, but they are hidden in the game's world and never really shown unless you think outside of the game. Inside is best explained through the player's own experience, but much like Inception (the film) it tries really hard to tackle complex concepts and struggling to tell them coherently that feels resonated with me. Like Limbo, Inside is another disturbing and puzzling side-scroller from hell. If you're looking for a rewarding albeit short game to haunt your emotions and test your creativity, then this is a golden pick. I played this between Limbo and Little Nightmares, a sandwich of depressing stories that all work well together. If you like either of those games, give this one a shot too.

The game is apparently a metaphor, so let's make the review a metaphor. Imagine sitting in a hotel lobby bar and meeting a beautiful model who is all over you. She is not only beautiful, but she is also perfect in every way. After four hours of flirting and drinking, she then takes you back to her room and whips out the biggest hook-shaped penis you have ever seen.
