People who are giving this game negative reviews are clearly just trying to get attention and start drama. Its not a flawless game, sure sometimes you will find yourself doing pointless fetch and grab missions and at some points you find yourself a little bored, but that's just a very tiny nitpick at this massive game. The mystery and the intrigue of the story will keep you interested alone. Alloy is fantastic character and is well written and well acted! This has franchise written allover it! The dev team clearly had creative freedom and you can tell the attention to detail is there. Overall the most important aspect of a game is to be fun and it is! Don't listen to the dorks that give this game a 0/10 I guarantee they haven't even played the game. Go support this game! 10/10 Expand

Great amazing game. GG created one the best games of the decade. A breath taking experience from beginning to end. Aloy is the best protagonist the game industry has seen in years. The story is riveting and compelling. The graphics are the best in the business. Simply a masterpiece.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I read a lot of reviews before writing my own and I truly enjoy this game. I'm giving it a 8 due to bug issues regarding certain missions but, most of those are fixed at the time this review has been written and information availability. I personally find the story to be very deep and engaging if you take the time to pay attention for data points otherwise it'll seem far more shallow than it is. That being said, my recommendation to developers is to give this information more freely to make the story more engaging for those players that don't want to spend time searching for the data points. There is enough information in the story to create several more games but, you won't realize this if you don't spend the time searching for the information. Most reviews have one of three complaints the first being the story is weak (it would seem that way if you don't get the right data points), traveling (for those that haven't figured out there is a single fast travel pack that lasts forever available pretty early in game), and those that say it's so similar to other games in the same genre but, hate on those other games as well as this one (those people will never be pleased).

All in all, I recommend the game.

Cons: Teammates are worthless. It doesn't matter who is fighting on your side, they contribute nothing. Otherwise, the overwhelming majority of missions involve total isolation. You are truly on your own on each and every quest, each and every instance of combat. Not only are you alone, but you are severely outnumbered nearly every time combat arises. Not just 5 to 1. Think 10, 20, 30 to 1. Sometimes so many high powered machines that the only reason you win is because, at the end of the day, it's a video game. What's more, the machines are specifically engineered with real actual living animals as inspiration. Which means they should behave like animals, right? Nope. They attack you on sight even if you pose no threat. They don't attack each other regardless of territory. And above all, this game employs the worst save mechanism imaginable - camp fires. Which means these incredibly difficult combat operations, often multi-layered stages with each next phase involving more and more difficult machines to face, all by yourself, you have to get to a campfire to save your progress - if there is one.

Yes, this game has great graphics, but that's pretty much it. The story is a mix of rehashed movie plots and was seemingly written in hindsight to accommodate the main idea of fighting robot animals. This wouldn't be a problem, if those fights were actually somewhat interesting. But for the most part, combat in Horizon Zero Dawn is a monotonous cycle of performing dodge rolls and shooting arrows, with a few melee attacks now and then.

The sidequests are among the most boring I've ever seen in a video game. They only differ in the form of the cheesy story the quest giver will tell you. They all follow the same formula: Go to point A and examine the area, follow footsteps to point B and examine the area, follow footsteps to point C and...you get the idea. Eventually you find whatever it is you were looking for and can return to the quest giver.

Weapons, customizations and perks are meaningless and arbitrary; a tacked on, low effort attempt to add some RPG flavor to a bland open world game. The only thing this game is rich in, is map icons. You will find a lot of locations that promise some sort of activity, too bad it will always feel like the exact same thing you did 10 minutes ago.

The game is fun and worth picking up imo, but has every major setback of a console game, everything is dumbed down, holds your hand every step, horrible UI and AI. Story is interesting so far, but the characters are bland and one dimensional. Oh yeah and the stealth system :) Its hilarious...

I can honestly say that there is absolutely nothing I hate or even dislike really about this game. Horizon Zero Dawn is classified as an open world, action RPG, and on those things it does not disappoint. You play as Alloy (no not like the metal) a cast out for reasons I won’t say. Alloy is haunted by questions about the “ancient ones” and sets out on a journey to answer questions she has about her past as well as what happened to those that came a thousand years before her. HZD’s fluid controls and even better combat mechanics make it a joy bringing down giant robotic beasts. Although quite challenging at times HZD never oversteps its bounds. What I mean is that the times I did die, it was never something that wasn’t my own fault or stubbornness. This is something I deeply admire about this game. It’s not a cakewalk. It’s not afraid to challenge your every move, and it does it without being a complete troll. The story was quite fascinating to me, and I found myself really anxious to find out what Alloy finds out next. Gorilla studios, the developers that brought the Killzone series to the PlayStation, really show what they are capable of and although I never believed Killzone to be bad games, they just never quite clicked for me. After playing HZD I cant help but admit to the reader how wrong I was about my perspective of Gorilla being a somewhat mid tier developer. HZD in my humble opinion rockets Gorilla Studios to legendary status. This game is an instant classic, and although it shows a lot of influence from other games Gorilla has crafted the perfect mesh. If I had to say one thing I wasn’t super impressed with would be SOME of the side missions. It seems like they might have tried to go the Witcher 3 route. Making each side quest a strand of a much larger thread and just as important to the lore as any story mission would. HZD just misses that mark. I never felt like I was doing tedious filler, but I think there were a couple that I would have loved to see expanded on. If you own a PlayStation and are a fan of open world RPGs chances are you are playing this game as I write this. If you are not a playstation owner and are a fan of action RPGs go buy a playstation and this game like now. Throw away any stupid ideas of console loyalty and get this game. Expand

I have probably taken more than 100 screenshots already, just like a traveler taking photos at scenery spots. The battle and the machines are also decent and challenging IMO, contrary to what some people might be claiming here. At least in my opinion you just cannot easily win by shooting the same type of arrow and rolling all the time. You as a human being is truly fragile in the face of huge machines. Two hits and you're gone.

Cons: The main story, its scripts and voice acting are actually decent and intriguing, if not particularly groundbreaking. A part of the story towards the end actually made me want to keep going and see what really happened, though the denouement seemed a bit disappointing tbh. There are still various holes here and there which appear a bit too inexplicable, mawkish or abrupt, and many characters were either saints or dumb crazy villains, too one-sided. though I understand that for any video game, in a lot of cases you have to sacrifice the story coherency for the sake of gameplay purposes, as long as it's not outrageously nonsensical. However, the side quests are really sub-par. The quest contents are highly repetitive and the script writers are totally short of innovative ideas and feel rushed (In 3+ occasions somebody died in front of you after saying their last words. Seriously?). Eventually you'll feel a bit drained out and soulless, just repeating the same battles with various types of machines all the time, doing the exact same kind of task over and over again. On this front it just falls massively behind truly great open world games such as GTA or The Witcher, where any side quest can be hugely surprising/entertaining/edifying.

In all, I'd say even just for its graphics and visual arts design, you should buy it. They are executed magnificently. However, it's clear that the developer just didn't put the best part of their budget to fully fleshing out the world with script writing/voice acting and treating side quests with care, which really is a shame. Otherwise it could have been a real 10/10 game.

The sense of exporation and finding things is in every corner of the map. The battles can be simple but get very intense. At times, I found myself getting the andrenaline rush I used to get from playing Horde on Gears of War - barely surviving and yelling out loud as I tried to find cover or land shots while fleeing.

Its also entertaining to just look at. Had no problem co-playing with the girlfriend and switching off to keep the game going. I will admit, there is definitely not a lot of "new" features in this game, but everything was done right. It just feels good to play.

The story is well crafted, the characters are believable and relatable, the music and sound effects are top notch, and the combat system is fantastic. Even the collectibles felt woven into the overall tapestry of the game's story. By this I mean finding collectibles expanded the game's world and helped unravel mysteries unlike collectibles in other (read: Ubisoft) games which are often just thrown in scrap only tangentially related to the game's setting (looking at you, Assassin's Creed). I do admit to finding the hunter trials a bit tedious but not overly so.

Horizon is the rare game where I'm genuinely sad that I have completed it. And yet I am glad, even though it means not coming back to this well designed world until a sequel, that there are no plans to extort players for DLC and no examples of content cut to sell later as DLC. I can only hope any sequel lives up to the bar set by this first game.

Playing it on a Pro and the graphics are very well done. Not only the fidelity but atmosphere, colors and just overall ogranic feel. Biomes merge into each other smoothly with very few times where the ambient color suddenly shifts or things like that. Overgrown ruins, valleys and sparse forests all feel organic. Most cities and settlements feel like places where people actually live. There are pop ins and some textures still aren't loaded when you close enough to notice it, but that's not a frequent issue.

Gameplay is fun, but i would recommend anyone starting on hard. Smaller machines still aren't much of a threat but bigger ones require a thoughtful approach and gear upgrades. One of the bigger gripes is that you can have maxed out you gear half-way trough if you focus on side missions instead of the main quest branches. While there are some cool and unique things you can get in the late game, i would've wished for more weapon variety instead of just ammunition variety.

Human enemies are forgetable and often more an annoyance then a threat. But the machines are negating this shortcoming. Every part of their armor can be destroyed to reveal underlying systems and weapons which are vulnerable to specific damage types. On bigger machines, that's up to 20+ hit zones including the weapons and weak points itself. It's a lot of fun.

What surprised me most was the story. It's a very solid sci-fi story with some twists and turns that aren't easily predictable. From times to times, it even plays with what you would expect from a videogame and then turns it against you. But that's somewhat common nowdays so no extra points for that. What's worth extra points is the fact that, at least the main characters and most of the side quest characters, interact in a very natural way. These people are believable and it just doesn't feel 'video-gamey'. It's overall a very believable wordl - and that says something if it is populated by techno-goats and cyber persians. Also the way in which the ui and the old ones are introduced was very statisfing.

Then there's this thing about pushing a feminist or sjw agenda. Personally, i'm neither liberal or conservative. I've opinions that stroll into both camps. There's a tribe in the game which is a matriarchy that is ruled by three female characters. They also have a cult going that surrounds around a primordial mother. Which is one of the oldest religious concepts of mankind. Their religion and soceity makes complete sense in the context of the story. Also, there are black people in the game. That's about it. Other regions are modeled after different religious and cultural aspects. One even quite the macho club with veiled women. So i cannot support the statement that the game pushes any agenda. Instead it seems to be a very well researched world influenced by different historical cultures.

Overall, i would recommend this game to almost anyone. If you're into the story: There's plenty of it and it's shown in a great manner. If you're not into the story, there's a lot of hunting quests to be done and a lot of exploration to do.

Masterpiece. The best open world game I have played. Horizon that takes a thing or two from Tomb Raider and Zelda. The world and lore is probably the most creative of any game in the last 10 years. It is on my list of favorite games of all time.

I like the main story, atmosphere in the world is engaging. Some of the game elements are copied directly from Assassins Creed, Witcher and Skyrim, but are implemented very well to the game. Graphics are really beautiful, especially the machines and flora. I like the mechanics that different machines (and different versions) need different tactics to beat.

    Best game since Witcher 3.

The game clearly has taken a few queues from the newest Tomb Raider games in it's gameplay and it's presentation of a strong female lead, even if she drifted into Mary Sue territory a bit too much for my tastes. Bout the only thing the game did wrong was come out on the same week that the Switch and Zelda did, meaning it was severely overshadowed during it's premiere week which could affect sales. With a setup for a sequel, it seems GG is in it for the long haul and this could become what they always wanted Killzone to be: the PlayStation's Marquee series. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Nearly perfect game. I have been an Xbox-er since the original Halo, and it is recent games like this (and Uncharted, Last of Us, Little Big Planet) that made me feel it was finally time to own both. I got the Uncharted 4 PS4 and Horizon: Zero Dawn is my second Playstation game since I had a PS2 some decade or more ago. To sum it up in one sentence: Man, is Xbox missing out. I think if games like this continue to find themselves out of Microsoft's grasp then the console war is going to turn monopoly sooner rather than later, which might be less positive than you originally were thinking. Sure, there will be a chance for everyone to play the great releases, but manufacturers will have less incentive to crank out new and exciting products. The hardware will especially suffer. Back to the game, as I said at the forefront, this is a quite flawless game in most regards. Sure, there are some re-hashed ideas such as Tomb Raider/AC/Uncharted-esque climbing, ziplines, and rapelling, Witcher/Tomb Raider/Far Cry/AC/Deus Ex/etc-esque environment scanning, Far Cry/AC-esque map revealing, crafting that is found in every game under the sun these days, a skill tree that isn't particularly exciting, a familiar stealth aspect complete with 'silent strikes,' and lets not forget the foraging/hunting small game for health and supplies. The weapons/armor system could do with a bit of Borderlands' or even, gulp, Destiny's touch added to it for diversity and randomness of gear. Ok, with what sounds like a host of seen-before and mediocre features, how could this be one of the most exciting worlds ever to be explored by gamers? What makes it so unforgettable?

For starters, all of these 'features' are implemented efficiently and seemlessly. Climbing is fluid and easy, crafting uncomplicated, and stealth accomplishable by even the most heavy-handed players. All added to the game to remain background noise for a thriving ecosystem containing a novel menagerie of what are compelling, spectacular, and biomechanically-lifelike robotic denizens. It is best to go in open-minded with no knowledge of what lies ahead. I compare Horizon's cast of creatures to DOOM's unforgettable lineup of monstrosities that remain etched in everyone's mind as freshly as if a Cacodemon's face was just plugged with the 'ole double-barrel. Numerous detatchable parts and vulnerable components can be targeted, making the creatures' anatomy incredibly realistic- even if it IS wires and circuit boards as opposed to muscle and sinew. Each and every encounter with these mechanical beasts proves to be a memorable one. There are robotic reptiles that lurk in rivers, flying fiends that roam the skies, and even burrowing barbarians that gave me a chance to relive those old Tremors movies. One dreadful denizen in particular happens to be the size of a small skyscraper with a head that resembles Seattle's Space Needle. Luckily, it is so large that it is simply oblivious to its surroundings and the player's attacks must feel like an ant crawling on its carapace.

The story is quite cinematic and there are more than a few inspirational scenes. In conclusion, Horizon is a masterpiece that is a few tiny improvements from being one of the best games ever. For an original IP, Horizon bravely carves out a niche of its own in a tried and tested world of action rpg's. The game forges a powerful new universe teeming with substance.

By far one of the best games to offer on PS4. It sort of steals from multiple games (Newer Tomb Raiders/Far Cry) but it works wonderfully with a beautiful environment. It does have some flaws but some seem like they are bugs that could be patched. Overall one of the coolest games PS4 has released so far.

I felt like there could of been more side quests, but the side quests there were are just as good as the main missions. They were all well thought out and clearly given as much effort as the main quest in the game.

Combat is a dream. You truly feel like you're being hunted and are vunerable. Tactically trying to take down huge, animalistic robots was completely thrilling and moreish. This certainly ISN'T a point and spray game. You have to think about the best way to take down your foes as even the smallest of enemies can kill you if you don't approach them in the correct fashion. Overall, a fantastic game.

Every time the game revealed some part of the mystery, it only increased my desire to uncover all of the secrets the game holds. The ending was beautiful, but its not the end and I can't wait to jump back in and finish what I haven't yet done!

HZD doesn't revolutionize the genre, but it's a fresh take that I think was executed very well.

At a minimum, I don't know how people can rate this game a zero or anything close to it. Maybe due to the hype people were expecting this to instantly become their all-time favorite game only to find it has a couple flaws like everything else. But that's maybe reason to make it a 7 or 8, not a zero. I would ignore those reviews as completely useless and baseless, but everyone is entitled to his/her own opinion. Personally, I think this game delivered on the hype and provides a lot of hours of entertainment.

So I’ll admit right off the bat, I had doubts that this game was going t live up to the hype. I’m glad to say I was very wrong in that my assumptions. I just finished it after spending ever hour outside of work playing it for the last week. Yeah, that’s right, I got addicted.

Now I know, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea, but I think that you will if you liked the comparison I’ll try to draw. When I play this, I see the marriage between Tomb Raider (first PS4 game, haven’t tried the 2nd one yet) and Far Cry: Primal. Now throw in another game you enjoyed, which you fight robots… and there you go. I mean, who doesn’t like fighting, killing or enslaving robots? Right?

Okay, so am I saying this is the best game ever? No, far from it, though this is a thoroughly enjoyable game. The story is well enough to keep you invested, though predictable as… well, I don’t know, you think of something really predictable. ;) I will say that if you are an explorer type of player, then you have a great deal to keep you happy. There’s plenty to explore. Even a special outfit that, really feels like you’re cheating if you use it, but hey… didn’t stop me. And I get the feeling it won’t stop a lot of you either. ;)

    Pros:

    - The graphics, while not groundbreaking, are still pretty good and the entirely open world aspect tied with the real time weather and time cycles make this a very immersive experience.

    - You really feel like you have to work to progress and it feels a little more rewarding when you can do the next “thing” you choose to focus on. Choose in the right order and it can make you life easier.

    - The number of weapons and gear you can use really changes your gameplay. You can choose from a few different ways to play it out which can increase the challenge or, of course, make things so much easier.

    Neutral:

    - For the most part, the heroine, for the most part, seems to be one of the few sane people in this world. This can be entertaining and irritating at the same time. But I guess that’s what you get in a post-apocalyptic world?

    - Key story points have interactions you can choose from. I’ve yet to see if your choice actually has an impact on the story or not, so this may add an additional dimension that helps replay value.

    - AI - Well, it’s smart, but dumb at the same time. While it seems that robots learn about traps, they remain incredibly dumb when you silent kill one of them in front of the others.

    Cons:

    - Yes, there are some glitches that still need to be worked out. Like the big dead robot that decided to violently twist and twitch off in to the sunset. Seriously! Okay, fine, no sunset, but it really did just kept on going.

    - Major design flaw in that when purchasing anything, if you want to buy more than one, you have to buy them all individually. Not to mention you have to hold down the button to be sure you want to for about a second each time. Thing is, they give you the ability to sell multiple, so it just seems sloppy.

    - Inability to map your own controls. Sure this isn’t something that’s standard, but for me all the way to the end, I still used the wrong buttons my fingers have been trained to over the many years (more than I’m proud of) of gaming. Annoying in the heat of an engagement. Not a problem everyone has, I know.

All-in-all, this is a great game. It’s totally worth buying as you will more than likely enjoy every minute of the many, many hours you will spend on. I’m sure that there will be more than a few updates to fix bugs, which will get rid of some of the glitches and fix the odd crashing that I experienced (only twice), so that’s okay. I’m looking forward to the DLC content. This is one of those instances where we actually got a full game. Thank you for that! The DLC will add to, not finish the story.

Combat is fun, going from sneaking to dodging massive machines while they frantically leap at you. The difficulty isn't completely on point for me however. You can control some machines in the game, and while the fights with the machines you can't control (the corrupted ones) are often challenging because you really have to use everything in your arsenal to trap and defeat them, the corruptible machines are easily dealt with by taking control of one and letting them kill each other. Enemies that should feel intimidating are instead boring because I sit back while I make them kill each other.

The world is very well put together with many environments spreading out across a massive map, with many objectives and sights to see spread throughout. I felt that I could explore this game for countless hours and still not have seen it all.

The game falls a little short on some parts of its story. Without getting into spoilers, while I like the overall story and all of the world-building this game fell flat with voice actors and facial animations. Some of the characters are well voice acted, but many are not making everything they say seem less believable. And the facial animations look robotic at times, with characters moving their heads in weird ways and making strange expressions. The dialogue is often dull, dry and uninteresting. I found myself skipping it at times out of boredom. However I enjoyed character dialogue and messages I found that played as I ran through the world, it was when I had to wait while listening to someone blab on about how they need my help I would just want to help them, and not hear their whole explanation.

Even though I think this could use a little work with the writing and could tone down the machine corruption ability just a bit, this game is still an amazing experience I would highly recommend combining the best elements from many games into a well made (mechanically and visually) game.

I'm drawn to the story and falling in love with aloy, who is the main character. I would describe this game as being a gorgeous, perfect mix of far cry primal, Tomb Raider and witcher 3. This is GOTY for me. I advise you to buy this game

The main character, Aloy, turned out to be surprisingly good as the prime driver of the story to find out about her origins.

Yea, this is a gushing 10 review, but it is wholly deserved. Horizon: Zero Dawn literally rekindle my love for video gaming which had been waning over the past few year, If you need me to say something bad to believe my praise, then know this: The inventory management in the game sucks to high heaven. Other than that, it's a must buy.

It runs 30 FPS stable, no hiccups, no micro-stuttering, no random freezing and no frame dropping. The only case of the game dropping below 30 is in the game's main city because of the ammount of NPCs there BUT still manages to get more than 25. Expand

Horizon Zero dawn is very good game! It is best game of 2017 year and I believe it. If you have PS4 I offer to you buy this game and enjoy it. This game has Photo Mode. It means: you can pause your game and select Photo mode and select a good style for your photo and shot a photo. Im going to buy Horizon Zero Dawn 3 weeks later. See you next time. Wait for my next review.

Perfection, there has not been a game of this calibre out for some time, it has elements that remind me of the Monster Hunter series, hunts/gathering/carving etc and is also very Witcheresque. Combat is awesome, the graphics look visually stunning, and there is no set way to play this game, you can do as you please. A must buy for any PS owner

So...I just finished this masterpiece of a game last night, and I have all kinds of feels. I'm exhilarated from the journey, captivated by the story, yet profoundly sad it's over. This is one of the best games I've ever played hands down!

This game is excellent on the ps4. Lots of side quests, huge map to explore. Real time rendering looks awesome. Loving the soundtrack and characters. Haven't gotten any glitches at all and runs very smoothly without the ps4 pro. Definitely a must-buy for the console.

It's sort of like a cross between Far Cry Primal and an Assassin's Creed game but with an intriguing story-line, a bigger open world and a smoother, fluid combat system. Now don't get me wrong. The characters and creatures look great but the voice acting can be a little stiff sometimes. Aloy, the main character is very interesting though, down to her look and her personality (which the player controls somewhat). The beauty of the open world makes you forget about any of the tiny negatives. The game may get repetitive (constantly restocking and replenishing basic items, doing side quests etc) but overall it's highly addictive. The little pleasures are upgrading weapons and armour, discovering new places and hitting the sweet spot on a machine from a distance (most people will know what I mean). It's also great that the player can go down two different path-styles. Either go full on warrior style of 'I'm charging in here all arrows blazing' or stealthy and sneaky style 'You'll be dead before you know what's hit you'. Overall it's a good game for people used to open world games (but you may find too many similarities with other open world's you've played) but also a good introduction for beginners and there are 4 difficulty settings to choose from. Enjoy. Expand

This is a very good game. It's robotic animals feel lifelike... well... as lifelike as robots can get at least. The characters are great and the story, while a bit overwhelming, is very good. There are a few flaws in my opinion, but whatever. I had a blast playing it and any review under a five is probably lying.

This game is pretty amazing. I'm a pretty selective gamer because I'm older and have less time with games and more of my time is dedicated to my kids, wife and career. But every now and then there are a few games that grab my attention and completely keeps me engaged. Horizon Zero Dawn is one of those few games. From the storytelling, to the graphics, to the gameplay etc. it's all wrapped up in a great cohesive action rpg package.
The gameplay is very accessible and fun to get into. A good amount of enemies require you to implement a good strategy to overcome the odds. The game is difficult enough to be challenging but it isn't tedious.
The graphics are among the best on consoles. Uncharted 4 came out last year and I'm surprise this gives that game a run for its money in the art direction and technical prowess department. Graphically it surpasses Witcher 3 and that's no easy feat.
The sound design is amazing. The atmosphere really pulls you in.

This game is an easy 10 out of 10. If you're on the fence, you owe it to yourself to play

The unfortunate fact of Horizon is that most of what it does well, other games have done better, and they did it with a compelling who and where. This is the game you play after you’ve finished The Witcher 3, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and Far Cry: Primal. It is the greatest hits compilation of open-world games. Yeah, sure, you might want to own it, but the real connoisseur has the original albums.
