This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Horizon Zero Dawn is the pinnacle for Sony's current gen-gaming. You play as Aloy an outlander seeking to explore the mystery behind the machines and the old ones.

    Pros
    1) Great graphics. It fully utilizes the basic playstation 4 and the pro.
    2) Great gameplay. You choose your approach of gameplay whether direct combat, stealth, or both.
    3) Variety of enemies. Each enemies have their own unique behavior.
    4) Decent story.
    5) Interesting story

    Cons
    1) Collectibles.
    2) No mini games?
    3) Music needs some improvement.
    4) The quests should have better impact aside from the characters showing up at the final battle.
    5) The main villain needs more presence and the final boss happens to be a rehashed enemy.

One of the most fun video games I've played in literally (yes, literally) decades.
    • Visually it is stunning. The environments are varied, beautifully detailed and deeply atmospheric.
    • The sound is spot on; your characters footfalls, the spitting rain, the distant birdcalls, the roar of machines, all of it accompanied by a sound track that knows how not to be distracting or annoying. •

    • Gameplay is top notch. New players will struggle with the difficulty of the larger enemies but level up and modify your equipment and you'll be (somewhat) comfortably taking on whatever this game can throw at you. And it throws a lot. Enemy variety is large and their AI near perfect.
    • The story is deep and interesting without being overly confusing. The characters are fully fleshed out and rarely fall into predicable stereotypes.
    • Voice acting is wonderful with one or two exceptions, I rarely skipped a character interaction (which is rare for me).

Cons: I would have loved more rpg elements (stats, abilities, dialogue options with consequences) and a more interactive environment. I often found myself wanting to be rewarded for exploring the brilliant world by finding unexpected treasures, enemies or secrets. The human enemy AI needs work, they are not very smart or challenging.

Overall, a near perfect game. I envy people playing it for the first time and greatly look forward to future DLC.

I don't know what else to say other than this game is utterly fantastic.I'm going to break this review up into a few sections: Appearance, Interactions, Combat, "Feel", and Story.

    APPEARANCE:
From the get go, you're presented with a stunning graphics and an interesting setting that makes you ask yourself, "Hmm, I wonder what's going on here?". Although the facial animations can be a bit off sometimes (one of the few reasons why I don't give this game a perfect 10), the full body animations are fluid and flawless. Guerrilla Games makes excellent use of lighting and shaders to create a stunning picture no matter where you turn, leaving you in awe at the beauty of this strange world. The machines themselves are done in a way that allows you to recognize their real life counterparts pretty quickly, yet still admire their uniqueness.

    INTERACTIONS:
The voice acting is phenomenal, and more than makes up for the sometimes-wonky facial animations. You learn a little more about the world with each "little" side mission and errand you do, each of them consisting of multiple quests and incredibly deep dialogue. Horizon does a fantastic job at making quests more of an experience with the characters and the world around you rather than just a tedious task.

    COMBAT:
Unlike most RPGs, playing as Aloy feels incredibly intuitive and fluid. You aren't bogged down by a sluggish character with minimal movement mechanics. The movement is designed so that you're free to evade, jump, slide and attack without having to worry constraints such as cooldowns and stamina. Crafting can be done on the fly and time is slowed slightly so that you can still craft ammunition without having to pause the game. Each time you encounter a new enemy, you're faced with a period of trial and error that makes you wonder "How on earth am I going to beat this thing!?" My only complaint about the combat system is that it becomes relatively easy to take down machines once you figure out how to effectively destroy them. The game counters this by throwing more of them at you, which makes for some very intense, frantic moments of evading, hiding, attacking and outsmarting the AI.

    FEEL:
Awe. Playing Horizon: Zero Dawn fills you with a sense of awe. With dozens of hours into the game I still find myself saying "Holy ****, what is THAT? That's amazing! (and terrifying!)". Very few other games have made me want to explore for the sake of just exploring. The world is both incredibly large and incredibly dense, ensuring that you never have to travel more than a couple minutes before you encounter enemies you have to sneak by, a new location to explore, or NPCs to interact with. Even if you do find yourself in a large stretch of walking/riding, the beauty of the landscape is more than enough to keep you entertained and admiring the scenery.

    STORY:
Horizon: Zero Dawn captivates its audience from the very get go with an atmosphere of mystery. Who is Aloy? Who is this man taking care of her? Why are they outcast? Who is this tribe? What are these machines and why are they here? What happened to the old world we're familiar with? This game does an incredible job of satisfying all of your burning questions about the characters and the world, rewarding you for exploration and curiosity. It's always exciting to find text logs, voice recordings and holograms that each explain bits and pieces of Horizon's backstory through individuals' experiences.

The main story line itself is incredibly deep and complex, balancing faith with science and history with legend, with Aloy at the centre of uncovering the truth about not only herself, but more importantly the world.

Accompanying the main story is a plethora of side quests that each have their own story to tell, making them feel like their own "mini story modes". I'm glad that they're not just an afterthought, but an integral part of making the game what it is.

    CONCLUSION:
HORIZON ZERO DAWN HAS MADE ITSELF ONE OF MY FAVOURITE VIDEO GAMES OF ALL TIME, RIGHT UP THERE WITH THE LAST OF US. I FOUND MYSELF INSTANTLY FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE WORLD AND THE CHARACTERS, MAKING THIS GAME A TRUE STORY-FOCUSED EXPERIENCE WHILE STILL MAINTAINING THE ENGAGING ASPECTS OF EXPLORATION AND ACTION.

I have like 45 hours but haven't finished this game yet, but so far the game is great!

    - The battle gameplay is quite good, I hope it gets better like a little more balancing in weapons to make me want to try more combinations. So far, once you have every type of weapon, using the same 3 or 4 weapons 90% of the time is good enough.
    - The gameplay in general has it's flaws but it isn't bad. The grinding, limited inventory and crafting system is tedious. The climbing isn't very good when you compare it to other games. It is hard to tell when you can climb, or when your jump can make it.
    - The story is pretty generic. It would make a mediocre SciFi movie, but acceptable for a game.
    - SubQuests could be better, but still, they are 10 times better than what we had in FF XV.
Although it has some mediocre animations here and there, It has one of the best graphics in consoles so far. It's almost unbelievable that Mass Effect is going to be released in the same year.

Aloy is amazing, the world she explores is breathtaking, the gameplay is captivating, the exploration is endless, and the overall experience will have you hooked for weeks. If I had to describe the game with references... think of a badass female protagonist like Lara Croft, but in Red Dead Redemption's western landscape exploring ancient ruins like in Skyrim, but the ruins are futuristic like Halo and you have to unlock parts of the map by taking control of tall areas like Far Cry, using stealth like Assassin's Creed and climbing like Uncharted, with the help of technology that allows you to see what's not there like Arkham City's detective mode. Oh, and huge beasts like Monster Hunter but I haven't played that so I can't really comment. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. For me Horizon: Zero Dawn is The Witcher 3, Tomb Raider, Assassin's Creed, and Far Cry: Primal all roll into one game with a bit of Metal Gear Solid (excluding the cardboard box part) sprinkle into the mix and is one of the few game of 2017 that doesn't blow itself up to be bigger than it actually is. The story of HZD is set after the end of the world via Terminator scenario except these one "eat" organic as food (literally) instead of competing for survival, it's not all doom and gloom as the story, side quests, and characters add a bit of humor here and there as well as providing a bit of context as to what each location was once were.

Graphic is as good as possible on the current generation of the Playstation console, there is an incentive to finish the game on the hardest of difficulty, craft and equip on the go or adapt to the changing circumstance, story and its conclusion wrap up pretty well (may want to do those side quests), a living world (actions and their consequences are visible as the NPCs will discuss events following the conclusion of story and side quests), lootboxes (there are no microtransaction involve), certain collectibles can be used as currency for loot as well as providing a bit extra to the overall storytelling, and lastly the machines, the bigger, meaner, and generally more dangerous machines carry with them a very big payday but taking them require a bit more finesse and if necessary improvisation.

The game overall storytelling and experience is very enjoyable for me (is there a 9.75 option here?) but loading screen could be a bit faster (ignorable for some) and that is the last 0.25 for a 10. I would recommend this game as it is one of the few "gems" of 2017 that doesn't built itself around microtransaction.

This was a real hit out of the park for me. I haven't gone back to do the DLC yet, as I'm in the middle of some other games and other things, but I played the crap out of this for months straight - only Skyrim has compared to it.

    Gameplay 10/10

The controls on this game are impeccable. You really have to be top-notch engaged in order to not die. And yet, while that can be frustrating from time to time, it really is a matter of practise and skill. It's not hard because it's unfair, it's hard because it's a challenge, and the controls do not fight you, they are just right.

    Creativity 9/10

The peoples, locations, weapons, enemies, armor, background, and story are all really creative. They stand out as unique and exemplary in the genre.

    Music 9/10

While also not quite a set of songs that are each specifically memorable, all the music, and sometimes jsut atmospheric background noise like babbling brooks, dripping caves, and blowing wind, are really engaging.

    Visuals 10/10

The visuals on this are absolutely stunning. Unsurpassed. I've never seen such a beautiful game. I often ran around the countryside just to admire the undiscovered corners of it. And to make it better, the game gives you EXCELLENT camera control, including nearly infinite flexibility when taking screenshots.

Also, no points taken off for sexualization. There's ZERO. No "female armor" problems, no sexed-up female characters. No tight skirts, no naked background dancers. None of the usual crappy tropes that need to die. This game was stunningly well informed and progressive. Female characters, not just the main one, are fully formed human beings. And all clothing is functional and exactly what you'd make in order to survive, period. Very, very realistic.

    Characters 7/10

There aren't that many characters, but who they have are strong. Many are from a time long ago that you slowly learn about over the course of the game, and those feel well fleshed out as well. Not the strongest part of the game, but still well done.

    Plotline 9/10

This was really unexpected for me the first time. It's clearly a post-apocalypse thriller, but what the apocalypse was and how it happened and what's going on now was very creatively put together and unique. I look forward to future sequels in this world.

    Emotional Engagement 9/10

What happens to Aloy, and what happened to the world that slowly unpeels, are some heavy fare. They're well done and conveyed strongly.

    Replayability 10/10

I started replaying IMMEDIATELY upon winning this game. Even when (at the time) there was no New Game+. I liked it that much. Playing on a harder level really changes the feel of the game, especially on Ultra Hard.

    Difficulty */10

The game can be whatever you want it to be. On average, the game is harder than most. I've died more on this game than on any others for a long time. But there is a difficulty setting, and you can turn it down if you want.

That being said, replaying on a harder mode, ESPECIALLY Ultra Hard, is a truly new experience. Almost everything is instantly deadly on UH mode, even with game-end stats and equipment. One reason is that on this mode, the enemy AI is also much stronger. Things act like packs and hunt you down, they are much harder to trap and surprise, they're much more aggressive, and they attack almost twice as fast, with half as much telescoping their actions, for twice or more damage, and your melee spear becomes almost uselessly low damage. Also, all ammo becomes 10-100x as expensive, so you really have to not be wasteful, or farm for things the hard way. It's a very different feel.

Every mechanical enemy is engraved with numerous mechanical parts which can be exploited for weaknesses or critical hits as well as their parts can be used against them. The visuals are mindblowing with a lot detail that helps in for making this world feel more alive. Whether if it's a sunny day with every grass blade shining and reflecting light or a stormy one with rain pouring down as Aloy reacts to it, this game always manages to look visually stunning. The plot is interesting and original with plenty of side missions that will keep you busy through out your journey. The main strength of horizon zero dawn is how well it has managed to incorporate mechanics from different open world games without making them repetitive or overwhelming. The world is diverse with different terrains, sceneries and cultures. There are 5 different cultures in the game with each culture having it's own lore and architecture. Each culture has it's own unique city, village or settlement The only negative that I could come up with is the human AI which might be more dumber than a Ubisoft AI. However the human encounters wee pretty decent but managed to feel a little underwhelming compared the excellent machine AI and combat. Platinumed this game on my first playthrough. Here you realize that some guys from The Witcher 3 were at work. There are in fact some gameplay elements that you have already seen so possibly elsewhere, but still manages to put his own stamp on and make it way better than other Open World Games. Nowadays, it's hard to create something that has never been there. Horizon manages to breathe new life into the genre with the unused setting and the robo-Animals. It´´s been a while since i had so much fun with a game. Quite strong buy recommendation 10/10 Do not be sad XBox / PC fanboys

Ganz klare Kaufempfehlung 10/10

Unfortunatly if you've played games like Witcher 3 and other large open worlds (even concepts from Far Cry) you've played even horizon. The female lead also speaks like a normal 18 year old girl from today, not something I was expecting considering it's based hundreds of years in the future and humans are basically back in primative tribes. But yeah she speaks like a normal teenage American girl.

For such a big budget why recycle NPC models? I'm not saying EVERY NPC has to look differnt but come on, at least make an effort surley they can do better than just altering skin tone and face painting?

Other gripes include dropping you in the middle of a tough battle within any warning and without letting you prepare for it before hand first. I also dont' like picking up level 25 quests near the start of the game when I'm only around level 4.

Quite a gripping story, but very few charactors actually leave a lasting impression. Also the mount handling is arkward, I'd probably have prefered not using mounts at all in this case.

Like I said it's a stunning visual game but it's by no means a masterpiece.

And the best part is it matches that with fantastic combat gameplay and controls. This is the smoothest 30fps fast action title I have ever played. It by no means compare to 60fps or more but if a game is going to run at 30, this is the way to do it.
It is an open world game that by no means innovates anything and it borrows heavily from other games, but what it does borrow it executes extremely well. There was no mechanic I felt was a worse or a **** version of another games' same mechanic.
The story is also good and I found myself really wanting to get answers and press on, not to mention there are alot of interesting lenghty side missions.
Sure there are a few quests called "Errands" that are more typical "Gather 5x of this" type quests but they are relatively few and you can easily skip them without loosing out, or simply not dedicate time on them and just get them on the way when doing side or main missions.
This isn't what I would call a proper rpg, it is more of an action adventure game with rpg elements. The skills are fairly basic % or number increases and only a few add extra moves. You do have dialogue options but they don't seem to have really long term effects.
The pudding is in the combat. It is fast an fun and I like that you are not OP even if your level is higher than the enemies. Some enemies require you to think ahead and lay traps or thin out the herd and not just charge in. You have many tools to achive these tasks at your disposal. It really fits the character.
I also like that the descriptions in the inventory clearly states what the resource/items are for, so you know what stuff you can sell and not wonder if you need it later to trade or craft something with.
The game hasn't bugged or crashed for me even once and I must say, I'm surprised how well it is optimised and how well it runs beeing open world games usually have some quirks or bugs (looking at you all Bethesda open world games).
The Decima engine seems very promising indeed.
My main complains would be the lipsyncing and facial animations are far behind the best games of today that has dialogue ingame cutscenes. Also although not bad by any means, you can tell it's not the best voice actors in the business for some characters.
I do think however this is a very good game, and a lenghty one at that. The main story alone will net you 25-30h of FUN gameplay and interesting story on normal. And if you are a competionist we're probably talking 80-100h.
So it's a pretty hefty bang for your buck for a singleplayer experience. I highly recomend this game.

    [Outline]
The game is a bout a teenage girl raised by an outcast who is eager to know who she is, ending up saving the world (as usual). Simple plot. As usual open-world games, there are tons of quests available and places to explore. But when it comes to the mid-range of the game, it seems like these side quests gone down in numbers so your chose would be to either rush till the end of the main story(ies) or do more exploration.

    [Combat System]
The combat and skill system is great. Every single move is quick and flawless. (The heavy attack might need some time to get use to tho). By visiting ruins and completing the related quests, you will be able to over-ride more types of machines which are not "corrupted." However when you have learned a certain skill, 1 on 1 combat would sometimes become boring because the heavy attack -> knock down -> crit hit combo is too handy for small ~ medium foes.

The game isn't perfect in many ways, but its really fun to play with great graphics and sound effects. Would suggest to give it a try if you are a hard core action game fan.

It brings so many new ideas and concepts to the open world genre and, in fact the genre needed it. Where to start with this? I got the collector's edition of the game on launch and have gotten absolutely lost in this game world. the graphics are stunning, the music is absolutely fitting and the characters have a real sense of emotion and purpose (minus a few of the side quest npc's). Aloy is a great protagonist and seeing how she handles everything around her is awesome! The emotion can be felt within the characters pertaining to the tribe, the outcasts, and her guardian Rost.

The ranged combat is fast and fluid and extremely rewarding when you hit that critical spot from miles away only to watch as a grazer explodes and causes a nuclear chain reaction amongst the herd. The melee combat on the other hand is a bit slower, and feels a little too "heavy". there is no "real lock-on" system in place so you will have to constantly turn the camera to the enemy your facing if you don't slice it down with one hit. the melee combat feels almost like the witcher 3 without the targeting system. overall the combat is extremely engaging and really puts you in the action.

Communicating with NPC's. For those who enjoy the dialogue system that was found in games like Dragon Age 2, and inquisition or the Mass Effect series. You will no doubt enjoy this one as it offers up a similar form of dialogue being as you can choose between being Smart, Aggressive/Abrasive, or Love/sympathetic. it plays out really well in this title when handling decisions or scenarios.

This is one title that you do not want to miss. This is what this generation of rather bland and generic new IP/games needed in a desperate way.

I just want to make a note here at the bottom to all of the folks calling this game "Feminist Propaganda" and the most of the user reviews are 'Paid".

    1. feminism, this game is in no way shape or form eluding to the fact that women are inherently stronger or better than men. this story is simply centered around a young girl as the protagonist thrown into a world of turmoil, mystery, and confusion. If this game is "Feminist" because it has a female lead role overcoming overwhelming odds than so is Tomb Raider.

    2. Paid reviews. in my honest opinion the fact that anyone can sit here and state that sony is paying users to review this game is dumbfounding. do I think that everyone has been genuinely honest in rating the game? no. there will always be 'fanboys" who will white knight the game to get it to higher scores. But do I also think that there are people out there who come to write reviews of games that have never played it and rate it poorly because its a flagship exclusive? yes. that is the problem with todays gaming "journalism" and Reviews. there is more bias or personal feelings in the way of rating the game on it's own.

Overall: The game is easily a 9/10. It's a game that you will get lost in and absolutely sink some time into. the narrative so far for me has been just as rich as games like Mass Effect, Dragon Age, or even the Tomb Raider series.

-Enemies (robots): Excellent desing, really good AI for the robots they can adapt to traps an so on, most encounters with the beast feel unique thanks to their complexity and amount of things you can learn from them.

    The bad

-Enemies (humans): while entretaining to fight, they can feel very dumb and are not as endearing as their robot counterparts.
-Limited means of transportations: There are only 3 options, fast travel, walking and robot riding.
-Sidequest: while most are entretaining to do thanks to the fun of combat and have nice stories, a lot of them have a fetchy feel.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Good premise, excellent visuals. Those are the only good things I can come up with.
Because everything else falls flat in the end.
Story, nothing new to be fair outside the premise I mean. "Plot twists" can be seen miles away, characters are forgettable, Aloy is not that interesting and her story feels like a copy of Naruto (The outcast who is motherless and fatherless, shunned while the protagonist doesn't understand why, wants to prove that they aren't a waste of space and to understand why they are shunned, goes to war to prevent end of the world, but admittedly that is where it stop)
And let's not forget the sequel baiting ending, come on!
And towards the end the combat started to breakdown, or I was extremely unlucky and had tons of bugs, arrows going through enemies, arrows not hitting the weak spot, human enemies not dying from a head shots from the strongest bow (sometimes it did kill but sometimes it didn't, both the "leader" enemies and grunts)
Admittedly there is plenty of activities which prolong the game time, but I see no reason to play it again.
People are hyping this game way too much, and in it's hurting the game.
Don't get me wrong it is a good game but everyone gave it good reviews way too easily.

It reminds me a bit of Skyrim, which is always a great thing, but with a bit of Far Cry Primal thrown into the mix. This was one of the most anticipated games for me this year and it's truly lived up to all the hype!

I don't think I've ever reviewed any games on Metacritic before, but I was checking out the user score for the game and noticed it was far lower than I expected and wanted to see why. I noticed that there were a ton of users giving this game a 0 score and, upon reading those reviews, I noticed that nearly every single one of the reviews was complete garbage--people badmouthing open world games, people criticizing the great gameplay, people complaining about the types of missions in the game...and the list goes on...

Anyway, these fabricated false reviews compelled me to review the game accurately, so that it's true worth is being correctly communicated to gamers interested in giving it a try!

If you played games like the recent Tomb Raider games, and FarCry Primal, this game will feel very familiar - you certainly see where they took several of their ideas from, sometimes to the point of almost being copy & paste.
But I don't mind, as those are some of my favorite games on the Ps4 - especially FarCry Primal.

What really stands out to me in this game, are the fantastic enemy encounters you'll have with the games creature-like machines. You'll encounter anything from Horse-like creatures, to Raptors, elephants and even a gigantic T-Rex!
These fights encourages lots of strategy, because some of them are VERY tough to best. They will charge at you, shoot at you, and even borrow under ground to launch an upward attack - it's all very impressive.
I can't remember the last time combat in a game was this engaging.

I also have to mention the visuals. Just wow, is the first word that comes to mind! Lots of effects, lush environments, and great character models. Aloy look really great, with her thick, beautiful hair blowing in the wind as you run through the open environment.

Of course, not matter how fantastic a game is, it's never without minor flaws.
And one that instantly comes to mind is a somewhat confusing gear-upgrade system. I feel like I never truly get the hang of it. It should have drawn it's inspiration from games like Fallout 4 for instance, as I loved the way you upgraded your guns and armor in the game - very intuitive.

The climbing can also feel a bit finicky sometimes, and isn't as good and intuitive as games like reboot Tomb Raider for instance.

These are very minor complaints mind you, and the game is a truly amazing experience. One of the absolute best games on the Ps4, and even one of the best of the last generation Imo.

It gets a 9,5 score from me, with the title of "highly recommended"!

This is a perfect example of a game made by people who were passionate about making it. When you play the game you can just see how much heart was put into this game. Sadly may developers these days make games without caring, they simply do it to get paid. But this game was made by a group of people who really care about what they're making and it just shows.

This is a true AAA title on PS4. Fantastic acting and story, deep plot and quests. I read some negative tripe about Feminism and whatnot in other reviews but these are the autistic screechings of those so hypocritical they can't see they're just shedding crocodile tears.
Truly a wonderful game full of fun.

This game is a masterpiece. It is well-polished, has a great story and is without a doubt, the most beautiful looking game on the PS4! It's sad how xbots, pc, and nintendo fanboys will give this game a zero just to lower the overall user score. If you have a PS4, this is a must-buy. You will not be disappointed.

This game is pretty solid. My main concern about this title was being a boring and repetitive game that will just lead to a path were you only do side quest, hunt and repeat. Far from this, Horizon Zero Dawn is a very polished game, with deep personality, one of the best OST out of there and technically almost perfect.

The graphics are astounding, one of the best graphics I've ever seen in a game. Guerrilla did a very good work with the hardware PS4 provides.

The downsides for me are clear: Voice acting. Sometimes they lack expression and charisma.

It's annoying, but not enough to distract you from the rest of the immersive world.

The story is very fast paced in the beginning, but begins to get a bit murky with the fetch quests and side missions. Sort of like the 23-episode seasons of shows that drag.... I would have liked to have seen fewer of those and have it kept more linear to emphasize on the story it has.

Overall, this game is worth a play through for most people and think it's pretty deserving of all the solid reviews it has. It's not perfect, but one I will for sure remember playing.

Technically it's truly impressive but there are certain things like graphically downgraded character models with outdated facial animations and some weird glitches while exploring the world that steal away from the overall experience. It also wants to implement RPG elements but it has underdeveloped characters and repetitive combat/enemies as well as limited weapon and outfit customisations and skills.
The story is interesting enough to keep you involved although mostly quite predictable. I did enjoy the way the story was outlined and Aloy is an enjoyable lead character but nothing more. I certainly don't agree that it is an iconic character for Playstation, especially when we are talking about a console that has produced some of the most iconic (in its literal term) protagonists that have marked video gaming history.
The gameplay is very good. Combat runs smoothly and along with the graphical prowess of the game (especially if you play on Pro) it's truly remarkable. Unfortunately, there is a limited number of enemies and the game becomes boring half way through.
The game's music is very good as well but it's not as remarkable as reviewers want to make it seem. While exploring the world I would expect to listen to the soundtrack constantly because the audio-visual combination of such a beautifully crafted world along with the really atmospheric music that accompanies the game would be an amazing duo. But what happens is that sometimes the music stops while exploring the world and that reduces the quality of the overall experience.
All in all the game kept me interested. There is a lot of content here with fetch and side quests and even if you want to only focus on the main missions you can still have a full 20-hour playthrough, a rarity these days.
Horizon Zero Dawn isn't the amazing game reviews present it to be but it does do a lot of things right. Partly.

The performance from Ashly Burch was phenomenal she did a great job at giving a charismatic and deep performance by conveying authentic emotion; Lara Rossi, Lance Reddick, John Hopkins, and Adjoa Andoh gave superb supporting performances. The open world is so much fun, I how much extra stuff there is to do. I love how with a lot of the conversations you have choices of how you want to respond which effects Aloy and the story. The writing specifically the story and characterisation of Aloy is outstanding, I love how unique and original the story was and how well created Aloy was she is one of my all ime favorite video game characters now. The visuals are gorgeous. The world design is beautiful, the robot designs are so cool, and the character designs were excellent especially Aloy. The combat is awesome but the melee attacks are kind of boring. The music was also spectacular especially the end credits which was really beautiful sounding. An A+ from me. This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The story of horizon zero dawn is outstandingly awesome in every aspect of plot-making technique. Thrilling and horrifying backstory described accurately through the main story, using holograms, audio logs, data points, and vantage points. It is that good because two movies can be made out of HZD that would tell us about pre-apocalyptic and post-apocalyptic worlds. Graphics for 2017 colored, well-structured, mingled with particles, effects, and overall beauty but with a flaw of render distance to improve fps-rating to a stable number. The OST gives emotions of hope and hopelessness at once. it coated all of the characters into one theme of struggle, prevailing, surviving, and living.
I got one point off because interactivity in this world comes to a zero. Everything plastic, almost indestructible, only machines can ramp a tree down or a bush, or rocks and other stuff but the player cannot do a thing in settlements, camps, wildlife world. The world is just a texture as NPCs in it.
Facial animations and cutscenes were greatly advanced in frozen wilds DLC, although in the main game it was terribly executed, You would lose connection to people, main characters, their emotions, feels, sentimental talk just because of unnatural acting(voice acting was superb though).
The AI for machines was made pretty good but for human enemies is just another story. it is blunt, foolish, annoying.
I would recommend anyone this game who wants a great story, characters, world, RPG mechanics, fun and exciting gameplay.

Aloy is a great character. She has depth and personality with the full range of emotions (which is to say she’s multifaceted and not at all a 1 dimensional character). She’s strong but compassionate and real. The rest of the cast is also memorable and each has their own distinct personality, making the whole narrative feel complete and immersive, instead of having each NPC feel cut and pasted.

Graphically this is definitely the most beautiful game I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how they were able to pull it off. There’s some much detail in everything and the environments are beautifully lit. The machines themselves are really impressive to examine because of how detailed they are.

The gameplay here really shines brightly. I found it to be highly dynamic and felt like I had options for how I would approach each fight. This made combat never feel stale, even with familiar enemies. I’m a big fan of upgrade systems, and this game definitely satisfies in that regard.

Overall, this is an essential game. Highly recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Ah Horizon Zero Dawn - a game I was initially hesitant about playing at the time of release. It took some time before I decided to invest my time into this new IP from Guerilla Games but I am very glad I ultimately did. The introduction of the game offers all valuable information the player needs in a very effective way. Without dumbing anything down for the player, the MC Aloy is immediately thrown into a story flow tutorial which includes a delve into that sweet sweet lore of what happened to the earth pre-game, its current state, and how to survive. Hellbent on finding her birth mother Aloy goes through a very thorough and well written story that weaves all available parts of the game together. Once completing the introduction the player has free range of the entire map. While it is advisable to grind some levels before entering certain areas, nothing in this gorgeous landscape is locked - the world is completely open to players choice. Despite it's age, Horizon's graphics are impressive in both the nature landscapes you cross and the giant machines you face all have a fantastic intricate design. In general, the gameplay is highly enjoyable. From the way Aloy moves, the varied combat systems with a wide variety of weaponry, and radio tower completions are all fun to do, unlike in other games. While Aloy is a character that can be slightly molded by the players choices, she is at her base interesting and entertaining. Her development from a naive but brave outsider, to respected and well educated leader is fantastic to playthrough. The ending of her plotline is slightly predictable but no less fascinating, in that while it's kind of obvious she is a clone of a pre-postapocalyptic woman, it is so wonderful to go through all the data and stories the machines, ruins, and an ally by the name of Sylens teaches Aloy, and the player. HZD is a game that anyone can play and enjoy, even those people who prefer to only play as characters of their own gender. For soundtrack lovers this game is a gold mine with a most delightfully played orchestra whose musical influences change with the regions, fights, and cinematics. With great influences from indigenous music, one can get lost in the sound of the flutes and once again lost with more European influences including mesmerizing string pieces and French horns. The diversity of the soundtrack also rings true with all aspects of the game. HZD is in no way a white washed game and contains vitally important characters of all races, genders, and even those with mental illnesses, in a way that feels organic like in real life. Though HZD is not entirely a perfect 10 and does have it's failings in various ways, though when thinking on it I can't actually recall what it is I don't like about this game. It may just be a personal hang up. From the studio that made Killzone, a boring grey shooter, Horizon Zero Dawn is a colossal improvement not just for Guerilla Games but for a great deal of studios and releases.

TL;DR Horizon Zero Dawn is a gorgeous game with great gameplay, soundtrack, HUD, combat, and graphics. Plus! There are no microtransactions, expensive DLC's, or useless multiplayer modes. Guerilla Games just did it right.

She both empowered and flawed, and her journey is genuinely engaging. She is not afraid to embrace her identity as a woman, but at the same time, it is not the focal point of her character. She and all the other characters are potrayed as human beings first and foremost, and that's exactly how it should be. The story will take Aloy across multiple vast locations each with a history and character attached to it, and everything presented builds up to an epic and emotional climax.
The gameplay on the other hand is also great. The fights against the machines are exciting and engaging, with an appropriate level of challenge. It requires you to plan and be precise with your shots, and doing so will reward you big time. But most importantly, every tier of gameplay, from combat, to stealth, to exploration all connect to concise whole. My only problem with combat is the lack of depth with melee attacks.
Horizon Zero Dawn feels like the completely package. It takes many tried and true tropes in games and works together new refreshing ideas. There's so much to engage yourself with, and all of it is so engaging and fun. I love Aloy's story and I am so excited for the future of this IP. This is the next big franchise for PlayStation.

The gaming world was urgently in need of an innovative game. This game has given me hope that the gaming industry still manages to produce high quality games, or rather, true works of art. The story is very innovative and, in some ways, unique. The more I advance in the story I am immersed in the drama and in some moments I got to play sad, pensive and I began to see that world with (I do not think the word) anguish? empathy? Hope? I do not know ...
Leaving a bit of the plot. It can be said that the graphics are of last generation, but at some moments I feel that it could be more polished, but deserves a 10 of any form. Music fits like a glove. Gameplay is another key point of the game, it flows very well and is extremely fun and challenging, at least initially, to kill the robotic "dinosaurs". Over time you learn about the weaknesses of robotic creatures and the satisfaction of killing one of those **** in 1 minute when you once took 10 is very rewarding. In short, gameplay + plot are the flagship of the game, a combination that was made with whim. Simply Loved Horizon: Zero Dawn, worth every penny and hopefully increase the life of the game with DLCs / Expansions.

If l had to criticize something, it would only be that the voice over lip syncing is not always spot on. Not a big deal and somewhat understandable when you consider how many characters and conversations this game has. To sync everything perfectly would have probably delayed the release of the game unnecessarily. Despite this small criticism, anyone who ranks this game less than a 8 has no clue. Expand

    Pros:
This game is amazing! I remember being somewhat reticent about the game even though I was impressed with the first E3 footage but I'm very glad I purchased this game. The mobility is smooth, the graphics are astounding considering it's an open world game and the main character is pretty awesome. I really like the simple crafting which reminds me of the rebooted Tomb Raider

    Cons:
-Voice acting and facial animations are pretty stiff
    -Melee could've been better
    -Weather transition is abrupt

Awesome game. Awesome graphics, gameplay, sound, the guns are just so sweet and I don't care what anyone else has to say, I like the story. The touchpad control is really cool and intuitive. It's a feature that has surprised me as before I played I wasn't expecting much from its inclusion but it does actually add to the experience as a whole.

This is a big open world full of different things to do and filled with details. It's beautifully crafted and properly tested - after 40 hours i saw only 2 very minor glitches not affecting the gameplay. The fun factor comes from the variety of enemies and the fact that each robot needs to be taken on differently and still you have many ways to kill them. The story is great but i advise to stick to the main quests as much as possible, otherwise you will loose the immersion. Do a couple of side quests to level up, there are really good guides out there on what to focus on.
If some says this game is trash or gives it anything bellow 7/10 they're simply hating. You can't unsee the amount of effort that has been put into this game.

Picked this up on sale for a miserly $10 and can say at that price it is beyond worth it. Even at full price there is clearly enough content, and enough quality, to make this game worth both your time and money. We'll start with the goods things:

    - The story is interesting, This weird dynamic of a post-apocalyptic world, mechanised animals, and dynamic relationships between tribes
Picked this up on sale for a miserly $10 and can say at that price it is beyond worth it. Even at full price there is clearly enough content, and enough quality, to make this game worth both your time and money. We'll start with the goods things:

    - The story is interesting, This weird dynamic of a post-apocalyptic world, mechanised animals, and dynamic relationships between tribes sucked me in. Whilst its true that the story's progress is somewhat predictable it was, for me, unique and kept me engaged.
    - Gameworld - this is vast and wonderfully realised. Graphically it is very good, in terms of how interesting it is I would say on the whole it is very interesting with a lot of things to find and discover. There are no go area's and dreaded 'you are leaving the playing arena, you will reset' elements but overall I found it to be very good.
    - AI. It is very good. The AI is responsive, seems to learn and seems ready for your plans of attack. I am not a sophisticated player by any means and am quite happy to hack and slash my way to glory. This is simply not possible here - you have to plan, you have to develop strategy, and you often have to use your entire arsenal or weapons. This is quite unique as, with most open world games I play, I will have a favorite weapon and stick with it. You are not afforded that luxury here and this keeps the game fresh.
    - Controls. On the whole I found these very intuitive, very responsive, and this makes for an enjoyable experience. There is nothing worse than poorly conceived controls as this basically impacts on everything in game - thankfully this game does not suffer from such issues.
    - Characters. I thought these were well conceived and provided enough interest to make the game, and story, engaging. Overall a definite plus. I really live the protagonist too, good strong character who I certainly felt an affinity towards.

    Some negatives:

    - The side quests. These can be very repetitive and sometimes very time consuming. A number of them do have interesting stories attached which helps alleviate the feeling of 'been there, done that' but the overall nature of then, often 'fetch this' or 'speak to that guy' makes them tedious after a while. The hunting lodge side quests were, though, an excellent addition, and a great way to teach/re-enforce some of the more complex battle mechanics and tactics.
    - Climbing. It may be that a few of the more recent games I have played and enjoyed, Assassin's Creed Origins and Zelda: BOTW, have superb climbing mechanics in them which makes Horizon's look all the worse. But there are numerous points were a relatively short jump to a higher platform should be easily made but isn't because the programming simply doesn't allow for it. This is not game breaking but it is something that I do not think should be present in AAA games. To have a jump up to a different platform, in which your head is touching the platform, but be unable to make it is really poor - especially as in other points in the game your character scales mountain with veritable ease (but only because they have 'climbing points' on them).
    - There is a lot of looting and crafting. This is just a personal gripe but I do not like excessive collecting and crafting, I do not like spending tons of time in the in-game menu's managing my itinerary because I do not have enough space for something I found, I know it adds to the realism somewhat but this is a game about post-apocalyptic earth in which robot animals reign supreme, I do not think foregoing inventory limits would've had much of a negative impact on proceedings, This is a minor gripe, but a personal pet peeve.

Overall - I would recommend this game to others. It's a lot of fun, it is very intuitive, the story and setting is unique and compelling, and, whilst the missions/main quest do not offer anything different from other open world titles, the open world itself does provide a unique twist and one which well keep you interested.

Expand

I honestly cant remember a game making me stop mid play and say "wow" to myself so many times. There's nothing quite like making your way to the top of a mountain summit and in the distance seeing the head of a Tallneck circling, inviting you to explore undiscovered land.

The content of the game is also superb, a rich story line that engages the player, but not only this, there is tons and tons of material and side quests to complete aside to the main storyline. Horizon can also boast one of the best AI systems I have played, it is clear Guerrilla put many hours of thought into the design of each of the machines which makes for a vast catalogue of different machines all with different strengths and weaknesses. But not only this, the gameplay of the AI is brilliant, the fact you can play this game for 30+ hours and still find it entertaining is testament to this. One of the main reasons for this is the difficulty of some of the machines/quests, I had the game on its hardest setting and a couple times found myself stuck for a good few hours on one machine, however I always felt l was capable and within reach of defeating it. Part of this balance was down to the rationing of resources, I would quite often find myself in a battle and having to carefully ration my resources in order to make any real progress in the battle.

I've never written a review on here but seeing the negative reviews compelled me to, I honestly believe anyone giving this game less than a 8 (even that is too low as far as i'm concerned) has either never actually played it or they are lying because they have an agenda against PS4 (e.g, Xbox Fanboy)

The unfortunate fact of Horizon is that most of what it does well, other games have done better, and they did it with a compelling who and where. This is the game you play after you’ve finished The Witcher 3, Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and Far Cry: Primal. It is the greatest hits compilation of open-world games. Yeah, sure, you might want to own it, but the real connoisseur has the original albums.

Horizon Zero Dawn has an unforgettable protagonist, world, story, visuals, soundtrack and gameplay. Due to minor issues with inventory management and quest selection, I cannot call it perfect but I can say it is absolutely worth your time.

There is enough spectacular action to keep you occupied for a couple of weeks, but Horizon is not the hot new killer app for PS4.
