I must say it's a great deal more difficult than the main game. The few new machines are a real annoyance in groups. If you already love Horizon going in and want a challenge then this is for you. See /watch?v=yHrYwsXnXLs for full review

    It´s more Horizon!
I usually don´t play DLC, but i couldn´t wait for this one. Horizon is my game of the year, so getting more of it is just awesome.
Frozen Wilds doesn´t do anything new - writing, graphics and gameplay are just as good as the main game. I love this world, can´t wait for a sequel.

Yawn, what a snooze fest. If you were board with the main story, this wont wake you up. Flat dialog, terrible animations, visuals should be better for running a on a "PRO" system. Not worth the GB to download.

While battling the Frostclaw can be fun, the same cannot be said about the Fireclaw, which is just overpowered. Even with a highest level character and top weapons, a single fight can last 30 minutes. And there is obvious AI cheating: both Frostclaw and Fireclaw can do a ground attack, which has a ridiculous range and auto-target. Sometimes, you can be hiding behind the rock and then boom! - they still somehow manage to know you're there. The only option is to run away at a long distance and wait till they calm down. Expand

After almost nine months since the original release I had forgotten how great the game played and felt. The strategy of determining each machines weakness and strengths and then acting on them is still satisfying. The Frozen Wilds story is very intriguing from the start when you meet a character who's leaving The Cut and tries to convince you to do the same. From there the story takes off and offers a rich, fun, and engaging story. Since this is end game level quests the difficulty is pretty high, which is a positive thing, Having to worry about your health means more strategy in the combat. The main story is around five hours long, but the many new side-quests offer much more play time. Not only are they different from each other but their stories are just as compelling, if not more, than the "main story" of The Frozen Wilds. There are a couple quests that I will remember for a long time to come. Finally, the graphical fidelity of the area seems to be improved from the base game locations. From the environment to the characters models, everything seems to be improved. If you enjoyed Horizon: Zero Dawn you will definitely enjoy The Frozen Wilds, I know I did. Expand

Something that the creators of HZD had thankfully avoided up until now. Defeating the Fireclaws is so tedious and time-consuming, that it gives you enough leisure to ponder how very few new things this DLC has to offer. The weapons are ok, but the armor, the quests, the storyline is just more of what we already know, not to mention the new skill tree, which is really useless and no fun at all. So yeah, don't wanna whine too much, good clean fun over all but disappointing in it's lack of new elements. Expand

    • The snowy atmosphere backed by the super-realistic engine of the game makes you want to use that Photo Mode every 10 seconds just to take a screenshot of the brilliant atmosphere.

    • The story isn't directly linked to the Main Quest of the game, but you start discovering bit by bit the more mysteries of what happened in the world of Horizon Zero Dawn and it does add alot upon the lore of the game and clears some mysteries.
    • The DLC adds alot of new weapons to experiment with and they do add more diversity to the weapons in the game.

    • But I think what I liked the most about this DLC was the cast of new NPCs that are in the DLC. Each character is very well-designed with their physical appearance, voice acting and well-written dialogues. And when you are doing the quests and interacting with these characters, it just makes you want to play this game more and more.

So in general, the DLC is one of the very best and I am really hoping for a second DLC just to make me even love this game more than I already do.

The landscape and graphics were and still are outstanding, the story was good, Aloy was a refreshing character who could hold her own and be a likable individual with her own thoughts and ideas, the machines and the approach of being a hunter on taking them down for the first few times ranged from cool to epic, and generally just had a interesting world to explore. The issues, like the uncanny valley of the NPCs and their unlikable nature aside from Sylens, the crude spear combat, weapons being very imbalanced and making others pointless and the general "originality" of the game's structure is very formulaic. I want to make this clear that despite these issues, the base game is a 9/10 for me and is an excellent game. I say this because The Frozen Wilds is definitely very good and is an expansion, but just barely. Let me list off the things I can critique and note my likes, dislikes and indifferences:

Atmosphere: Still outstanding visuals. My particularly favorite moment visually is when it hits nighttime and the aurora lights and moon loom over head. The music is great, with some surprisingly 80s style techno music that actually fit better than expected.

Enemies: My first disappointment. The Daemonic enemies are nothing but super Corrupted versions of regular enemies I have already defeated. Whats worse is that there are more of them in the game than the new enemy types. The Scorcher is like a Ravager but with a Mine launcher that is actually a challenge to beat (I'm saying it feels similar) and the Frost and Fireclaws are the only new inclusions and even the Fireclaws are already repeated in the same expansion. The Towers I dont count as enemies, they are nothing more than puzzles that you can turn off after you find a way to deactivate them. I felt the "new" enemies were lazily implemented. I understand you want to make it seem like it's an ecosystem but there is not enough where I feel is truly new. Still cool enemies to fight.

Story: It's alright. It's essentially a glorified mini story that can be beaten in about 5 hours. I didn't really feel much for the characters and I felt the Fireclaw boss fight was great...until I found out I can fight more of them, instantly deflating a potentially great boss fight that I felt was the same issue as fighting HADES in the main game. It's serviceable and at least interesting, but clearly the main game story is superior.

Side content: You do much of the same from the base game; hunt for collectibles, do side quests, etc. The standout quests I liked was with two women Banuk that hinted at a possible gay relationship and a tinker who wanted to get "looking glass" from a vault. The rest were fine but the problem is there is very little (4 side quests and a few other things) and I feel that, as a player who beat and did everything in the base game, THIS IS NOT ENDGAME CONTENT. This is strictly for those that are nearing the end and wanted to play this along the way.

Weapons, Armors, Upgrades: The new weapons are a mix of old and new. The bows now have a charge effect that makes the shot deal more damage and three elemental weapons that take too much to refuel in my opinion and are not as good as those bows. The armors are visually interesting but my Shield Weaver wins the day as always. The Traveler skill tree is a interesting concept, but feels rushed. I hardly ever use a mount, so most of the upgrades feel pointless and the rest of the inclusions feel like Guerilla should have made as a patch like disassembling items for half the metal shards.

Other notes: Your level can now go to 60, but it feels sort of pointless aside from the skill points as your health matters little against enemies really. The problems of the old game affect this one and it was irritating to see the unrealistic flailing characters and moving camera again. The bandit camp and fighting enemy humans still suck and don't feel really all that great to fight still. Bluegleam feels rewarding and great to earn the new weapons with it. CYAN is a really cool character.

I still find The Frozen Wilds an expansion, but some issues I have hold it back from being excellent. It feels like it was more of a taste than a full thing. A theme I see in gamers now is game length equals value. I disagree; 15 hours for 15 dollars is not what I look for, rather the depth and value of the game's content itself. I was definitely engaged, enjoyed certain parts, but felt going through the motions mostly. A 7/10 to me is a good game or expansion that succeeds at what it does, provides an overall satisfying experience, but hits some dips and issues along the way that I can't help to feel is wasted potential. Here is how this goes: if you like/love the game, you should buy this and play it. If you are unsure/dislike/hate the game, then don't. It's more of the same, for better or worse.

From the cutting edge graphical wonders of actual displacement of snow when Aloy walks/slides/lands in it to the exhilarating and brutally difficult new machine foes I'm not sure what's not to like about the Frozen Wilds.

The art direction is fantastic and so atmospheric with the whiteout blizzards and peaceful snowfall giving way to a stage of all natures colors where beautiful lighting effects is the star of the show. From the majestic blue light speckling the Banuk paths and settlements to the wonderful aurora borealis and countless stars in the sky at night, you can't help but be taken in by the mystical feel of it all......not to mention a story to match! The quests and characters were so charming and interesting, and diving into the Banuk culture and their Shamanic belief systems surrounding our(the players) and the human tribes most essential asset and source of life: The machines of Horizon.

The detail of the world from the lore to the graphics and game mechanics are superb in design as well. In a snow storm it actually becomes almost silent in game(due to the snow absorbing most of the sound just as IRL) even going so far as to add a new running animation for Aloy when traversing (ankle deep or more) snow. A new graphical effect on outfits has also been added, where after a certain amount of time spent in the frigid Cut(a few min) you become dusted with snow/frost from head to toe. New water and snow effects, and a host of new particle effects with snow have also been added all of the above really cement the experience of a true arctic world.

Thats to say nothing of the large strides made in game mechanics like adding customizable spears for Aloy with a host of different functions, and entire new Quality of Life skill tree centered around storage and machine mounts, to new special damage coils and protective coils to go with your new outfits the coils can actually be farmed outside the DLC as well!

My only complaint is that there wont be more DLCs in the future. This was a perfect send off, although a bit shorter than what I would've have wanted(my appetite for this game is huge), there's still plenty of content to keep you happy for such longer than the mere 15 hours quoted.
