I don't know, I was quite bored of the story. I liked the new weapons (especially elemental machine guns) which made fighting faster but overall I liked it less than the original game

This Expansion is pretty nice but it feels like a chore at times.

The new Armor Sets and Weapons are good, but the Frozen Wilds storyline is kind of uninteresting and it doesn't add anything valuable to the game. Granted, I really liked the setting, it's refreshing and something different from the main game. Also the new enemy types add some challenge to the game, but sadly there aren't

A very good addition. Good fun and atmosphere preserved. The new land, although not very diverse, is beautiful. Although I had to raise the brightness of the screen a bit because the night in the game is extremely dark and the passage of time in the game still cannot be accelerated. I was also annoyed by the fights with the fireclaws (long and not very engaging).

Excellent DLC to the base game. I felt it was more challenging, and the NPCs and cutscenes were better designed.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Let's start with the positives:

    - there is a lot of content
    - the new machines (3 that are new with one being a tower and the rest are more difficult reskins of the base game machines.
    - the new map is great and a fun historical location
    - there are some cool gameplay additions and quality of life improvements.

Negatives - the main story is not good. It’s a series of fetch quests and busywork, with a loose narrative about a AI and a brother and sister. The cutscenes really hammed it up with the drama and emotion and it just falls flat. One of the main characters is like crying over a AI that she thinks is a spirit and it just does not land with me, she just looks dumb for thinking it’s a mystical being. The brother sister relationship you are supposed to invest in is not gripping and doesn’t hit you in the feels like it wants you too.
    - the dlc is meant to be more difficult and what that means is bigger health pools but no real combat challenges.
    - the missions, fights, and exploration are really just more of the same. - some of the main quests you can tell are just filler. They will give you four objectives all over the map to do simple tasks and then those tasks branch out into smaller fetch quests. You can tell the devs were just trying to add to the run time of the short story. - the climbing is still terrible and uninteresting.
    - I yet again ran into more glitches on PS5. Textures were loading in weird, getting stuck in random flat terrain, the climbing messing up. I was really surprised by all these bugs in a AAA first party game.

It’s a average to good dlc. If you were dying for more of this game get it and you’ll probably like it, if you didn’t love the base game I’d pass. Buy it on a sale if you can.

Wow Aloy, that was kind of a journey. Despite small bugs such as disappearing loot, fish, robots, overall I really like the game, and I would give it 10 out of 10 at the beginning, but the far I went, the more I started hating the characters and dialogues and other features developers implemented. I played about 100 hours and plan to finish it again in NG+.

First of all, I just can't understand promotions for the game, everyone talked about "ME2" experience. It's a lie, there is only some ideas from ME, not the quality of ME. Mass Effect series are much more detailed in the matter of characters, their backgrounds and outcomes, you feel them and you want to know more about them, and you can ROMANCE THEM, what I clearly can't say about HZD:TFW. This game is more like Witcher 3 in the matter of quests, and I like it, and you should promote it like that, because this game have so much detailed side-quests comparing to first game. But even in Witcher (in every game) you could have sex or at least romance. HZD was trying to be more, they added "RPG" system, but it plays not as RPG at all, so a very useless integration. But, I can admit, I really like the game remember the places I visited and Aloy can say about it in the dialogues.

Get me right, dialogues animation quality is at top level, facial animations are also very highly detailed, I couldn't ask for more, really. But, they added so much dialogues, so you might think it can lead to some consequences? No, they don't. All them are not necessary, you can even skip them all, it will not affect anything. Even prologue can't affect anything. Same goes to every other dialogue with "emotion wheel", just pick what you think is correct, it will affect nothing. Same goes to whom to kill or spare, same no effect. So why to add clearly not working features? It makes you feel real bad.

Who is Aloy? Can we compare her with Shepard from ME series? Well, you guys promoted this game as ME2 experience after all. Aloy is too kind and clearly don't understand what is going on, every problem is not a problem for her, you can't feel real challenges, you can't see Aloy is angry, you only can see she is always happy, that's it. You can't read on her face she is really went through all this, she is not a fighter, she is a girl scout and it was the problem for me all the way. When I looked at Regalla, I knew, this is who Aloy was supposed to be, a ruthless machine destroyer, who knows no barriers, but instead, she's trying to be a good "girl", no one should take her seriously, but apparently in this game all men caved in under women, and women characters are about 70% of all people. And she even can't have any romance to not brake feelings of some LGBT.

Hunting grounds. It was much better in first game, it was far more challenging and interesting, completing them was really uninteresting and disappointing.

Armors. You don't have any outfit by the way, only armor and you can choose a different looking without changing your armor, what is kinda nice, but...There are zero really beautiful armors, that would emphasize the femininity of the character. Aloy is fully equipped "tank" in almost every armor. The developers has cutted the beauty entirely, to serve feminists.

Feminism. I see where you want to turn, and when you will do it, be ready to lose your fans and prepare to serve for LGBT players only, TLOU2 experience didn't teach you anything. You better learn from The Witcher 3 and Mass Effect 3.

I can't believe in Horizon world, despite of it's greatness and beauty, women take very high places, some women fight men and win them in close combat, which is nonsense, women goes to fight instead of doing really important women job inside camps/villages/cities. The world is died, people are dumb and understand only strength, cmon guys, you can't be serious, look at Mad Max for example and you will understand what will happen to all women. This game is so fake when it comes to "who is stronger".

I won't spoil here, but where are dramatic moments of the game at all?! I wanted to give it 10 out of 10, but at the end of the game, you realize, it have so much problems. The character you knew from the first game was just devalued, like "it" never existed. You did an incredible job creating the locations and machines (most of them were created in the first game), but the game lacks of Aloy emotions and dramatic cutscenes.

Despite that, lore of the game is very good, storytelling is also not bad. But I hope there will be huge improvements, because I could predict almost everything.

Can't say I am disappointed, but I also can't say I am very happy. I lost 100+ hours just to end every side quests and visit every place in the game. Was it worth it? I would say NO, you better invest in better story, I am tired of stupid grind games in open world

I would say it was a bit too hard, but I did have fun completing what I could. The story here also feels remarkably similar to the base game’s, but I enjoyed it more because the interactions with the Banuk tribe feel more personable. My most memorable moment involved observing a complicated ritual performed by the tribe to open a sealed facility door. The ritual performed with complete seriousness turns comical when combined with the players knowledge of how modern facilities operate i.e., fire alarms. The main problems I had with the DLC are an extenuation of the main problems I had with the base game. Inventory management is not improved, and unfortunately additional problems are added. The new weapons require a ton of craftable materials for ammo. I quickly ran out of ammo for all three new guns and did not bother using them anymore as a result. Ultimately, The Frozen Wilds is an excellent addition to an already fantastic experience. Expand

On the downside, we all expected the lore to be expanded in this DLC, but we had to settle with Sylens and his past / motivations. It is not like the Frozen Wilds storyline does not add anything to the main story, It's nice to know more about the Banuk and Sylens, but I guess I was hoping for more.

I really liked the snowy setting! sometimes, I will just pan the camera and appreciate the amount of details and love they put into this expansion. The new enemy types add some challenge to the game, they are really tough to take down.

However, the greatest compliment I can give is that once you are immersed in the snowy badlands of the Banuk wilds you will all but forget the main game even exists. Going back to HZD proper can be a letdown and I would suggest running this DLC right before the game's final mission.

The frosted setting of the northern tundra truly feels separate from the main game. It's a snow covered oasis unlike anything in HZD. The snowfall is greater, the accumulation is deeper, and the landscape is more varied. From colorful bodies of water to geological anomalies the Frozen Wilds is sight to see. Not only this, but the cast of characters are interesting and unique. The Banuk tribe is infinitely more interesting than any tribe found in the primary game. From their customs and traditions to their past war with the Carja the Banuk are a fascinating people and a joy to discover. Aloy becomes ingrained in their culture and Is even bestowed one of their greatest honors in the process. New characters are deeper and more unique than those found in the base game. They all have exceptional mo cap and you often find yourself accompanied by multiple NPC during action or puzzle oriented quests. This hugely improves both the technical prowess and emotional depth of NPCs in the primary game where no cap wasn't often used and puzzles/companion quests were infrequent at best.

The story may not be as profound as the one experienced in the main game but it's still an excellent ride with mystery and interesting characters along the way. It absolutely adds to the overall picture and offers insight on The World at Large, future threats, and a key character from HZD. In my opinion this DLC is required play for any fan of the original based on lore and story insight alone.

Along your 20 hour journey you will find the best weapons and some of the finest outfits in the entire game. It adds a new skill tree and a few interesting machines as well. The Frostclaws in particular is an incredible new enemy unlike any in the main game. It's bipedal and features an array of new attacks from Dark Souls 2 style grabs that can one shot you to a flopping barrel roll that causes massive environmental destruction. The expansion includes upgraded versions of every bow and three new and powerful weapons based on different elements. These include rail guns, flamethrowers, and an electricity arch rifle. They can be upgraded to achieve shocking results and multiple fire modes. The outfits also feature new buffs such as incremental health gain over time. They offer either unique elements or are merely better versions of main game armor. The toys in the Frozen Wilds are a joy to behold.

The Frozen Wilds is not only a robust expansion but GG truly attacked development with a focus on improvement. From puzzles to gear. From improved NPCs to the best collectables in the series every aspect of Frozen Wilds was handled with skill and care. The animal museum is a particular highlight. You will chuckle with joy upon each animal figure you find and even the pigment collectables have deeper meaning than any in HZD. Truly, this DLC is required gaming for any fan of this IP and it only amplifies my excitement for the Forbidden West. If GG could make such improvement over the course of a year then what can they do with five? The future is bright if Frozen Wilds is any indication. 9.3/10. The 10/10 is for balancing reasons.

Expand

For every positive aspect here, there's a bad one tied to it. And the bad one always screams more than it should. And that's a problem that stayed with me throughout the entire experience.
At first, I was loving it! Horizon Zero Dawn is one of the most gorgeous games I've ever played in my life. The world, character designs, enemies, environments - everything brought a tear to my eye. Not only that, but the game grips you from the start. Characters are interesting, bold, well-written and filled with secrets. It made me want to keep playing to find out everything about this post apocalyptic world and its people. And the story is solid from beginning to end, I have to say.
Tutorials were smooth, environments were interesting enough, enemy variety was fantastic and even the sidequests were engaging and actually fun to make.

My first 10 hours of Horizon were great. Maybe the game should have lasted about that long, because when I started noticing its flaws, my run with it just crumbled down.

And what killed HZD for me was the combat.
Even in theory it sounds silly. "Human with a bow and arrow, some traps and a knack of wood try to take down prehistoric robot beasts using stealth". I mean, come on...
It's overcomplicated and unbalanced as hell!
Every fight feels like a boss fight and they all take too long, even against humans. One little **** up and you're stuck fighting a single robot dinosaur and 5 masked dudes for about 30 minutes. Melee combat is a joke, robots have a ridiculous amount of health and do A LOT of damage, while you have to fend for yourself with a health made of paper and a few weak arrows. Even healing sucks in this game. When you don't have enough to craft potions, you have to HUNT for FLOWERS to heal a LITTLE.
The enemies in this game even managed to ruin one of HZD's best feature, which is exploring. The baffling number of enemies on the map and their misplacement in it makes running around and doing ANYTHING a massive slow chore. A challenge, yes, but definitely not a good one.
It's unbelievable how bad it gets. Especially midway through the game, when you're still discovering things.
And to make matters worse, menu interfaces are a mess, you acquire a lot of useless loot, Aloy's mobility and climbing skills rival Skyrim's, conversation animations are extremely stiff and the DLC is forgettable. Basically, Horizon packs a punch when it comes to bad open world cliches.

I was excited for Horizon Zero Dawn. I really was. But once I started to understand the game's MANY flaws in the dull details of its design, I wanted nothing to do with it.
It COULD be a great game, but it's nothing but a mediocre 40 hours robot hunt. I just can't recommend it.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Frozen Wilds is way more better than the standard edition. Cutscenes are way more better than the standard edition because on the standard edition, facial expression is sometimes a little bit off or not on the spot, characters will just stand in 1 spot or on a very awkward action. Map is very huge and very detailed as always. New machines are harder to defeat and it brings a great challenge for those players who want some challenges. New modifications are also been added and this can make a great changer for the gameplay. The story is so good that will give you some chills and questions that you will answer by yourself. Side quests, collectibles, hunting trials, etc are very small but it's okay since some of these are worth it to try out. Frozen Wilds is very worth it to buy and play Expand

HZD is one of the best games I've ever played. Frozen Wilds is a big let down. There are no interesting characters I can recall and, worse, the latent feminism in the base game, which didn't bother me, here blossoms into full toxic gender war where all women are strong and morally impecable while men must be portrayed as flawed one way or another. Gameplay fun is seriously nerfed because most of the machines are "demonic" hence cannot be corrupted nor overriden and stealth opportunities are much more rare. Lots of glinthawks, imo the most annoying creatures in HZD, and here dealing with them is worse due to the steep terrain frequently blocking the view. Last but not least, the new bear robots are omniscient bullet sponges and a significant portion of the expansion playtime is grinding fights against them. Frozen Wilds gets a 4 from me because there are a couple of interesting side quests and some new equipment to buy, but I'd only recommend it for players who have finished the main game in the most difficult setting and need badly a final HZD fix. Specially social justice warriors who think men are the worst and should be put in their place. Expand

A few cool new weapons and types of monsters have been added, but the machines in particular could have been more.

Overall, the story was okay, but it wasn't nearly as effective as it was in the middle of the main game.

My usual problem with DLC is that they have a poor value proposition. I bought the Frozen Wilds DLC for $5. I could have bought for $5 with an ultimate version of Horizon Zero Dawn back in 2017. I skipped it because for $5, I can buy an entire used game. I recently played through a stack of used games that cost $5 or less. Not just junk but well reviewed games like Prey, Wolfenstein: New Colossus, and Final Fantasy IV. None of these games wowed me like Horizon Zero Dawn. (Prey almost wowed me until the end sequence devolved into loading screens.) So when the Frozen Wilds went back on sale for $5, I bought it without hesitation.

The Frozen Wilds DLC does not add much new content compared to the based game but it is a meaty amount of content for a DLC. You have a new area to play with a few new structures to plunder, two new types of machine animals, and some hot springs and geysers. The entire story took me almost 10 hours to play, though I took my time explore as any good Horizon player should.

The first new machine type wrecked me. In the past few years, I forgot how the game plays. The combat system is complex and I forgot how many tutorials are in the game. The new enemy types are also cheap. They rush Aloy, hit her with body slam attacks, have area of effect attacks, and cannot be overridden with her staff. The new largest of the new enemies is almost entirely immune to explosive weapons. One of my main issues with the main game is the reliance on shooting arrows to knock off components. Most of my playthrough of the main game relied on the long distance bow to knock off armor and hit vulnerable components. I found that to be best strategy in the DLC too. Aloy can pick up upgraded weapons and armor but they do not change the gameplay much. I was glad to have a mission in the main game area to destroy a Thunderjaw (the T-Rex robot). It was a nice break from the DLC robots.

The story in the DLC is told well and it helps build the world of Horizon. The Banuk tribe has a friendlier relationship with machines and at one point you see them use an automated drill for ice fishing. I always found it odd that with all these machines to hunt, the people of Horizon did not use their parts for wagons, water pumps, and other tools.

The dialogue was all over the place. Some of the tribal people spoke as if they went to college. I had the feeling that the half the characters in the DLC were written by interns. Aloy is such a smartypants because she grew up with the Focus, an all-in-one internet database, alternate reality, visual enhancement ear piece. Everyone else learned from hearing stories by the campfire. Sony should keep this in mind as they make the sequel for Horizon.

All-in-all, this is quality DLC for $5 and I am glad I played it. From a value proposition, the quality of a Horizon DLC trumps the quantity of most bargain bin games.

If you caught on to the gender war in the main story, and were irritated by it, then don't waste your money on this. As I mentioned above, this dlc follows the same direction. However, if you wish to ignore the narrative, the (only) benefit of the wilds is that the most powerful weapons are there. In that regard...it may be worth it to you to purchase the dlc. Since this dlc continues the unrelenting assault on the mind with it's gender war agenda, it gets the same score as the main story.

I ll try to explain why I came to the decision and maybe it ll help you decide to whether to buy this game or not.

Frozen Wilds is the seemingless addon for the main game which means you progress from the mainland onto the Frozen Wilds as soon as it pleases you. Level cap is around 30 if I remember correctly, if you did the whole main game and some side stuff you will still face some enemies that will put you to the test. All in all it feels like a classic addon: new areas, new collectibles, more weapons and modification together some new armors. Basically everything there was got elevated a little bit.

Frozen Wilds has basically one big atmospheric theme which is the cold. Compared to the main game this felt a little bit one-sided to me. Also the hefty snow storms can be a little bit bothersome when it comes to sight. Realism aside I still appreciate that I m able to see stuff. Still graphical quality is top notch as it has been before. The story itself is somewhat connected and continued although I feel that there is a certain cut-off. The main game felt more fluent and continous where the addon feels a little bit seperated but still sticks to the "theme" without any spoiling here.

One thing I liked a lot is that weapon choice matters a lot more. I basically destroyed 95% of the main game with one weapon. In Fronze Wilds you gotta pick more careful or you are up for loads of pain, which feels good and boasts variety. Melee fighting gets also boosted which is something I missed a lot in the base game. There is new armor variety which is kinda useless if you get the special armor from the base game. This might seem okay but is still a bit sad for completionists because I basically was "stuck" to my old armor.

One thing that is confusing with the complete edition is the shared skill pool. Basically you can skill Frozen Wild and base game from level 1 on although some skills are based on Frozen Wilds. This confused me a lot on trophies but is nothing too troublesome. Skillpoints and levelups seem strangely balanced to me. I m fully skilled but obtained at least 5-10 skills points after that which is weird. It has something to do with leveling and seperated skill bonusses I guess. Finishing Frozen Wilds on nearly 100% left me at level 58.5 of 60 which is also a bit strange. Before I did 100% in the main game so I didnt think that it wouldnt be even enough to get max.

Besides some highly agressive enemy types, the game features pretty brutal hunting grounds and long passages without save points which bothered me a bit. I m regular gamer but still it is bothersome if you have to play on for 1-2hrs without a designated save point. That should not happen for casuals. Some collectibles again where placed also in the oddest spaces. I m not sure whether it felt like a competition or bothered me. Probably more of the later to be honest. Also I was sad that the inventory didnt get boosted in the progress of Frozen Wilds. I struggled a lot during the main game already and it got worse but it was only triggering my OCDs not something that is really bothersome to be fair.

All in all the Frozen Wilds is a fun addition that will keep you busy for 10 to 20hrs and has a nice addition to everything the base game offered. Again, buying the complete edition here for 20 bucks (or on sale even less!!) is basically a steal and absolutely worth it. Still I feel that the magic in Frozen Wilds was a bit gone. The story was more flat and the scenery a bit monotaneous. Some enemies and challenges felt too spikey in difficulty. Also I felt with the end of the main game the addition had a strange cut which I was feeling in the progression.

Let's look at the good things first. The dialogue scenes look more alive now. People just walking around made it look just better. Almost every side-quest has now some sort of twist that makes it unique. Side quests are overall a better experience (especially the one with the sunken cave). And I think the graphics are even better than in the base game. The snow looks just amazing. The machines are destroying the forest. Visually stunning.
I still gave it a lower score than the base game. Why? First of all - fights. Aloy is a little overpowered at the end of the game so they had to make it even. How did they achieve that? By making the new monsters that are sponges for arrows. When the game asked me to kill 6 Fireclaws I changed the difficulty because the hunt felt more like work than a challenge. A second thing would be story and character design that seems just naive. The whole Banuk tribe treats you like a god after a couple of kills. All the characters are stupid and powerless when opposed to Alloy and it just feels awkward.
Enough complaining. If you like the base game, you are going to like the DLC as well. It is more of the great game you like. And after completing it 100% and spending more than 20 hours to do so, I can recommend it. I hope more games had DLC's that add so more to the base game.

The expansion is way harder than the main game, and the environments and enemy types are awesome. But, sadly, it doesn't really add anything new or exciting. It doesn't help that the main quests were kind of dull. But I did find the side quests to be pretty decent, along with some challenging enemies. This is the best DLC I've played since The Witcher's Blood and Wine. It follows the very best of the main campaign but with new scenarios, visuals, and astonishing new machines. The level of difficulty in this DLC is way higher due to the new machines. This is the only game I have real cinematic battle feelings.

Apparently the people who developed Frozen Wilds paid no attention whatsoever to what people -
including me - liked about the original HZD. Sure, there's some exploration and story, but very little character development and you can totally forget about sneaking up on anything. The machines are all hyper-aware and almost all too strong to be killed with a single silent attack. Instead

The machines are all hyper-aware and almost all too strong to be killed with a single silent attack. Instead you'll often find yourself in an open arena surrounded by several enemies you'd seen and maybe a few stalkers you hadn't. Fun. Then there are the $#@! boss fights. Machines that take a hundred hits for you to kill, but they can kill you with only two or three, plus they're super-agile and 100% focused on you. Any companions are absolutely useless either for doing damage or for drawing aggro. So it's run and gun, run and gun, get killed, reload, run and gun, ad nauseam, until you get lucky and are allowed to proceed to anything remotely interesting. It's not worth suffering through that for the little dribs and drabs of secondary story on offer. Save your money and buy a game with a truly open world.

What a pleasure to get back into Aloy's world. This expansion is fantastic. I've got other games to play, but even after 220+ hours I still want to go back for more of horizon zero dawn. Game of the year 2017.

Takes the magic of the base game and extends it to 5 more hours in the amazing world. Make sure you finish the original before you head into the frozen wilds or you will regret it.

    A well made DLC that expands upon the already wonderful narrative of Horizon Zero Dawn. I played this right after completing Assassins Creed: Origins and the one thing that stood out for me between these two titles;

    The quests, side or otherwise.

I wasn't able to put my finger on it in my first play through of the game, but after seeing how drab and lazily implemented quest system in Origins was I able to notice just how amazing Zero Dawn got this. Each person, every person in this game, whether from the root title or the DLC have a personality. They each have a reason for asking for what they are asking for. They show it in there face, or in their tone of how they say it. You can hear the sadness or joy in their dialogue and say what you will about the facial expression in the root game (some were really bad), most of the time they nail that emotion or reaction. Take one of the first quests you pick up "Waterlogged."

When I first met Gildun, I legitimately found his personality that special kind of "grating but friendly." We've all known someone like this; happy even in the face of bad news. You never hate them, in many ways you admire them for finding the good in bad. In the game you can even see that in Alloy's reactions. That's a wonderful design choice Guerrilla made here; a reason to invest in the title.

I hope there is another piece of DLC coming for this title, something to tide us over till the next major release. I said this before in my initial review of this game, but this title cannot fall into obscurity. This is truly one of the best IP's to come out in the last 20 years, the frozen wilds is well worth your time.

Just adds more to an already great game! The story gives you a little more background on what is happening with the machines and how they were created. Graphics still look amazing, controls are tight and feels good to shoot that bow again at giant animal machines. Some fun side missions and interesting NPCs. HZD is definitely my game of the year for 2017!

Boring DLC for an allready mediocre game, this game falls into the allready continued trend by sony to focus on "cinematic" experience, instead of focusing on gameplay. Subpar story combined with to tedious combat and horrendous voice acting, doesnt do this game any favours. Avoid at all costs.

A solid expansion to a great game. It even managed to improve combat which originally already had the best design among all the open world games I’ve played. [01/2018, p.68]

This addon can defend its existence with its head raised. The Frozen Wilds add on comes only with little improvements and a weaker story than the original game. But it does not lose the excellent gameplay and in 10-15hrs gametime it offers a selection of the best.
