The locations are both some of the most beautiful I have seen and some of them have such great design to pull off each assassination in the way you desire. The choices you are given to preform the assassinations you want make this one of the most replayable games I have ever touched and it also made for some of the funniest moments I have experienced when you see all the bizzarethings you can get away with in the missions. I can keep phrasing this game but we be hear for hours so to close I think you need to buy this game if you are a fan of both stealth games and games that let you choose how to reach the objective and with all episode of season one out now there is not a better time to go pick this gem up especially with the announcement that a season 2 is being worked on. This is the second best Hitman game, after Blood Money. The reason it's good is because the developers went back to creating a game in the spirit of Blood Money. Wide open levels with multiples paths and various ways of disposing your targets. The story is just your run of the mill contract killer/espionage type deal. Nothing special but it works.

Wide open levels with multiples paths and various ways of disposing your targets. The story is just your run of the mill contract killer/espionage type deal. Nothing special but it works.

The real treat is the exquisite details in the levels themselves. Level design here is exemplary with nuanced, multi-story, multi-area playgrounds. There are some things that are scripted throughout the levels which help you with the hits. I recommend turning off the hints and just figuring it out on your own. The game really holds your hand otherwise and ruins the discovery otherwise. Also, all the levels are very varied and interesting, with each one posing a slightly different challenge due this it's layout and nature. The Colorado level for instance is so wide open compared to the others yet hard to infiltrate due to theme of the level. Don't want to spoil anything so I'll just say really only two levels are similar in structure. The variety here is great and you'll have fun coming up with creative ways to kill people. I nailed one guy with a fireaxe which was very satisfying.

There are some negatives too. A minor one is there is no freaking sniper suitcase. Wha!!! Come on IO, this is series staple! Bring back now! Lol. The Ai does get a little wonky sometimes too and you'll be scratching your head as to how you got discovered from time to time. The people who can "see" through your disguise sometimes just seem so arbitrary. You can get a military uniform, but the receptionist knows I'm not supposed to be a soldier somehow? Wierd little things like this detract from the game. The game also used to be online only, but after much Ballyhoo by fans, IO updated the game so you can enjoy everything offline as well. As it should be if ask me. Also, gunplay is as bad as you would expect. This was never really supposed to be an option for a game of this nature but shooting controls could be better. These are small things though. Also, there are many challenges to complete which unlock more tools of the trade. Most of these tools seem quite worthless except for very specific challenges, like the exploding rubber ducky. Anyway, IO where is my sniper suitcase!!!

Overall, this is great return to form for Hitman and I hope they keep going with more episodes.

I was very hesitant about the episode scheme they brought to this game but I can say one thing.. IO and Square Enix perfected this. I honestly think this is how the Hitman series should be moving forward. The replay-ability on this is incredible. With all the games coming out and the amount on backlog, it's tough to get through it 100% but is definitely something I would pick up again.

The replyabilty in this game is unprecedented with dozens of way to complete and master each mission it is easy to lose yourself and replay the same mission over and over again to totally master it without the fun ever going away.

Each mission is fundamentally different, from a vast mansion in a quaint small Italian town to a dangerous and mysterious farm in America, each of them feel alive, populated with relatively smart NPCs populating making the places you visit around the world feel real. Although it is clear that some mission are better than others, all of them were fun and rewarding.

My only complaints about this game is that it feels like Square Enix hired 3 voice actors for the hundreds of NPCs in each mission, so it does break from the immersion when an Arabic sales man has a British accent and the same voice as the soldier next to him. Furthermore the story is simple and heavily diluted with only 2-3 minutes cut scenes after each mission to explain the plot. This felt heavily artificial. However the fact that the story is forgettable and the game is still good, really shows the quality of the gameplay.

Good game, though extremely short, I easily finished it playing a few hours in a weekend. The creators tried to put a lot of stuff in the game to make you replay levels, but I'd rather seen them make a longer campaign. The quality of the levels is uneven, and Sapienza truly shines as on of the best levels I've ever seen in a Hitman game.

The movement is clunky and everything feels too slow. Shooting is an absolute disgrace and the voice acting has always been a joke in the Hitman games and it's no different here. There is so much content in this game you could play for weeks just finding new and interesting ways to kill targets, playing contracts made by other people, completing escalations, doing the elusive targets, going for the highest score or just messing around and having a blast. Other than the misstep with Colorado, which felt more like an absolution mission, all of the levels are amazing, filled with endless possibilities to explore and each will keep you coming back.
The episodic nature put many people off, and I understand why, but I feel it works so amazingly well in this game I am so glad they went with it. It stops players from just rushing through each mission, only doing them once without experimenting or exploring and beating the game day 1, and instead gave us the chance to explore every inch of every map thoroughly, finding all of the hidden ways to kill the targets, or creating our own fun and unique contracts on those maps.
The assassination are some of the best assassinations in a Hitman game, they are crazy, epic, funny, goofy and the game never takes itself too seriously. It has a story, but the story wasn't much of anything, it was just there to be there, but that's not what this game was about. It was about the fun, amazing ways to complete each mission, and they mastered that.
And finally the constant throughout year 1 support besides the new maps was insane, and it was ALL FOR FREE (until the GOTY edition.) They kept adding in new escalations to work through, new feats in each mission to give us new ways to complete them, a Christmas event and the AMAZING professional mode. The support for this game was outstanding, the missions were outstanding, the assassinations were outstanding. My best Game of 2016, my favorite stealth game ever made and possibly my favorite game on the current gen consoles. Can't wait for season 2.

If I had to pick this or MGSV I would choose Hitman anyday surprising seeing as I'm a huge Metal Gear fan but I think it's ultimately because unlike MGSV Hitman sticks to it's core design in being a sandbox stealth game where thousands of possibilities are open to the player to perform the perfect assassination.
It's hard to express how fantastic the gameplay is but I would urge anyone to try Hitman regardless of if you are a fan of the stealth genre or not, in fact I managed to get my ex girlfriend into the genre by sitting down and letting them go through the entire game one day with no hints or backseating and they enjoyed the hell out of it.

The game won’t be for everyone as plenty of patience is required throughout, and being spotted in the wrong place or doing the wrong thing essentially results in failing the mission (the long loading time doesn’t help matters in this regard), but for fans of the older Hitman titles or stealth games in general this is a must play.

The levels are somewhat inconsistent in quality and oddly the game engine or some other element (unknown to me) seemed to prevent them from having working elevators (hotel mission stands out as it has nothing but staircases everywhere), fiber wire takedowns are only possible on standing npcs so no classic Blood Money seated kill animations anymore. Finally the weapon system sucks as it regresses back to a pre-Blood Money style of set/fixed weaponry without any customisation possible which is also exploited to artificially inflate the number of weapons you can unlock, as you will get the same sniper 3 times but with an alternative scope on one, silent ammo on another and bullet penetration on the next one. These attachments should be interchangeable as you unlock them to encourage replay-ability with the new toys you get but instead that sense of discovery is sorely stunted due to a restrictive unlock system. The story takes a backseat as it should in a Hitman game, serving as an excuse to globe-trot from one level to the next but the music lets the game down moreso than anything else. The soundtrack is incredibly generic and feels far more like a wannabe 007 game than a stalking, calculating, contract killer experience. I have genuinely found the music is detrimental enough to the game that I play the game better when I boot up spotify to play classic Jesper Kyd Hitman scores as they always put me in the mindset of a more slow, methodical and silent killer, improving my approach to the game whereas the current score is too light and grandiose for its own good. It eradicates tension (which in turn makes me play carelessly as there is no weight to my actions) whereas as previous hitman scores of the Jesper Kyd variety always established an excellent tension for the player, informing the player that your actions can have actual domino-effect consequences and your next move could spoil all your hard work. The PS2 era hitman soundtrack established three core tenants of Hitman: Tension (to tell us to play carefully), anticipation (before a kill to provide a sense of achievement for that kill) and emotional payoff after a successful assassination. These are all feelings the current soundtrack is devoid of and as such it makes me play the game more carelessly and less methodically as it never establishes any stakes for our potential actions nor does it provide anticipation or emotional payoff after a kill. Every time I pull off a successful assassination in the game, the music makes that kill feel shallow and unimportant, like it does not matter. In a game about assassination, the kill should feel tense and provide a relief that you got away with it after. The new Hitman fails to encapsulate that core DNA that made the originals so great. That said it is more of a Hitman game than Absolution, even if I honestly preferred the music in Absolution.
NOTE: On a positive note, the composer for this game did a better job on the soundtrack for the Patient Zero DLC campaign as it uses more classical piano cues which lend itself to the renaissance man vibes of classic hitman. So more of this for season 2 please.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I'm a massive fan of Hitman, I have played since Codename 47 on the pc back in 2000, Not only is it an incredible stealth series, but the level design is memorable, gameplay fun, and plot mindblowing.

I've replayed every entry of the Hitman series and was always sad that codename 47 was never ported to console seeing as it's the one with the best plot.

When I learned about Hitman getting a reboot on Ps4 I was nervous but hopeful. Absolution was a disappointing entry in the series and a poor game in general, ditching everything that made Hitman great, from open-world levels to losing music composer synonymous with the series (Jesper Kyd).

SO onto Hitman, what do I think?
Firstly, the level design and gameplay is fantastic. They really captured everything about what made hitman fun and challenging and managed to replicate it.
I understand why they move hitman into an episodic release format. Each level is huge and can be played for hours upon hours, unlocking different stories and techniques, finding and solving challenges, and also allowing the developers to get the game out faster as they only need to complete one level at a time. Pretty clever.
What I find less clever is that you need to buy the game, the levels separately, the next game (hitman 2) all of its levels separately, the next game (hitman 3), and all of its levels separately.
    So incredibly greedy.

They should've just sold the levels individually (or as season passes) and had a single Hitman game that updated every 2 years, rather than selling new games that replace the old games and encompass all the levels of the trilogy. I can't see any reason to do this except for greed. This greed is currently biting them in the ass on Steam (pc and getting them mass bad ratings, and I can't see how anyone views this cash grab technique as anything but pathetic.

In Hitman, they kept the "Instinct" button which I hated in Absolution, which gave 47 superhero powers, to see through walls, and transform into a chameleon hiding from everybody, but nerfed it a little. So it's less of a superpower, it still lets you see outlines through walls, but you can't use it to walk past "enforcers" (enemies that see-through disguises) instead you need to be stealthy or change disguise. I feel this is a better use of it, and you no longer have power bars that deplete, so it's more of a map replacement assistant than anything. It's further nerfed on first plays of levels as it doesn't highlight targets, and only does so when you've completed the levels and have unlocked new starting locations. Very sensible.

Onto the plot. The plot of the Hitman series is very dear to me. Codename 47 and Silent Assassin have some of the best plots in any video games ever. I've replayed the games dozens of times, and de to Codename 47 never getting a console release it means it's a challenge to play again. One upon a time it was "remade" of sorts, under Hitman Contracts, however, Contracts ripped out the plot which kinda of defeats the point.
When I found out Hitman 2016 was going to be a reboot of the series, I hoped dearly that they'd redo the Codename 4 plot but with better cinematics and graphics.
Alas this wasn't the case. Hitman 2016 has a terrible plot. I was incredibly bored playing it, and funnily as the game was released in fragments (level by level) the plot was so boring that I' completely forget what was meant to be going on by the time the next level was released. Even now, after just completing the game, I could barely even recall to you the plot of this game. Additionally, for some insane reason, the cinematics were told in a freeze-frame style format, which is like a poor man's version of a comic book strip just without the dialog text. If you find watching stationary 3d models stare at each other without moving mouths, as characters speak to each other engrossing, good for you. I however hated every minute of it.
On top of that, the series being a reboot and not a sequel made zero sense. Codename 47 and Diana meet, again, for the first time, erasing the existence of the original trilogy. But none of the backstory of Agent 47 exists in this game. Not once is it mentioned why 47 has a barcode on the back of his head. Not once is it mentioned that he's a clone, or why. He's just some bald orphan that happens to have a barcode tattoo. Umm, k?

My long-term dream of an HD console reboot of Codename 47 is shattered, the best story in the entire series never made it on console, not even as a remake/reboot, and instead, we get this boring mess of stationary 3d models.

I can't help but feel that they made the story terrible on purpose just to make the levels more episodic and standalone. You can play them out of order and it really doesn't matter as you're not really missing anything.

Anyway, regardless of the terrible plot, the game is very fun to play and the levels warrant hours or repeated plays.

I still miss Jesper Kyd's music

All in all, Hitman is exactly what a Hitman game should be. It's not long in the traditional sense, but it's dense and packed with content. The mechanics are a little rough or hand-holdy at times, but that's a minor problem in the overall scheme of things. Whether it's a brutal, close-range assassination or a subtle poisoning, Hitman gives you more options than you know what to do with.

I wasn't disappointed by this latest installment in the Hitman franchise. Its awesome graphics, varied gameplay, and tons of content will impress. However, the terrible (and sometimes offensive) writing, confusing menus, and inconsistent AI took me out of the experience enough to warrant a less than stellar score than it would otherwise deserve.
