Imo it is the best twin-stick-shooter out there atm. Great game overall. Fun, challenging, strategic, especially when you have friends to play with. (The only bad part are the cyborg patrols who appear out of thin air sometimes.)

The best twin-stick shooter that has ever existed! Extremely fun to play with friends. Well designed, well pulled off, well done. Everything is excellent except:
    Poor variety of secondary weapons
    Repetitiveness
Toxic borgdivers who are pathetic without their Trident and Rumbler.

Helldivers will hook you up until late at night and is definitely most enjoyable with friends on the same couch. The ability to be able to play offline is a big plus as well. If you want to play online, you ll find a very satisfying speed and next to 0 lag (even in China), and there is an unspoken bro code that will favor team players instead of solo artists. I could only wish for a Helldivers 2, but I don't think that's in the pipeline for this small studio. Expand

Great game, great controls and has some extra point by having a great local multiplayer, which is rare on recent games. If you liked dead nation, this feels really similar, but it requires you to be more skilled to prevent killing your allies.

Helldivers is a game that shouldn't be as good as it is. My first impressions were of an utterly unremarkable twin-stick shooter. After hundreds of hours of gameplay, I can assure you that could not be further from the truth.

Boasting infinite randomly-generated missions and maps, dozens of unique weapons and stratagems, high skill cap gameplay that rewards awareness, quick decision making and constantly teaches the player new tricks, Helldivers is a brilliantly designed and executed game that stands amongst the best titles of the generation, and never stops giving.

As you rank up, you will discover certain tools and strategies that worst best. However, the real joy of Helldivers is trying out every weapon, every stratagem, and making them work.

The developers have released generous DLC in the form of new equipment. These are all worth the purchase, but there is no pay-to-win, here. All missions are beatable with the stock weapons and stratagems, but the DLC is there for those that love the game and want more.

Helldivers is almost certainly the best co-op title available on PS4, and there is an argument to be made that it is the best game, period, on the system. To call it an underappreciated gem would be an understatement. This is game that knows exactly what it is, and executes that vision to flawless perfection.

Helldivers is a very strong co-op game that’ll provide great thrills and challenges with your friends. There is something very satisfying about finally completing a difficult level, which I put down to the fluid gameplay that rewards teamwork over anything else.

They are complaining about manual reloading, not enough ammo, stratagem key combos etc. Are these guys for real? It is the formula on which this game thrives. It finds a great balance between strategizing and working as a team, and simply blowing sh*t up. I am quite far into the game and ammo has never really been an issue. It is simply about being able to prioritize your load out before going into a mission and which team member provides ammo drops and when. (To get my point across I am playing the game with my wife and four year old son) Having to key combo stratagems adds a level of intensity and challenge to the battlefield and quite honestly if they made it a one button action, it would make the game extremely boring.

The visual style of the game is engrossing and reminds me of a Blizzard title - polished. Character movement and general animations are smooth and satisfying to watch. The sound effects are noticeable and immersive. Units have some hilarious chirps, enemy mobs make threatening gestures and again the kill effects are satisfying and make for an extremely addictive experience. I also cannot understand how people are complaining about repetitiveness. Yes, it is repetitive, but the above mentioned mechanics make it a fun repetition. Kind of like the fun you had slaughtering mob after mob in (insert any mmo, rpg hack and slash here).

To top all this off, each player gains experience per level, amount of kills, objectives completed within a mission, relics found etc. The leveling system is obviously not as deep as other titles out there (like Skyrim as a rather extreme example), but its depth adds enough to make an impact in the game. There are a plethora of weapons to choose from and each weapon has a skill tree to level up making your desired weapon(s) of choice more powerful to suit your style of play. You can also upgrade your stratagems in a similar fashion.

Another unique touch is the system zone contribution progress bar, which increases each time an online player(s) completes a mission and dominates a planet. When this bar is filled, it initiates a global offensive attack on the alien home world in question, adding a greater sense of immersion knowing there are thousands of other 'Helldivers' out there kicking butt like you all for a common goal - freedom and liberation!

Overall his game is a fun, well balanced, extremely polished twin stick shooter, satisfying in every aspect and it really shines playing it couch coop.

Mastering this game requires some careful playing, you need to coop well with the other players, think of the abilities/weapons that make sense in the team, be careful with your aim (mainly, but no uniquely, because of friendly fire) etc.. If you go all crazy john Rambo, you’ll die quite quickly. I think it is a nice different gameplay, but if you’re just looking for some crazy mayhem fun, maybe you wanna look somewhere else.

I think everything else, sound, graphics etc…are ok, not great…but ok. It won’t prevent you from enjoying the game, and for me, this one is all about having fun, not jaw dropping scenarios. The variety of missions is decent, there could be a few more kind of missions, especially at low difficulty levels. It might feel a bit repetitive as I said, if you’re stuck playing low level missions a lot, as some missions only appear in higher difficulty levels, but still quite good.

In terms of background story of its universe, I think it does ok. This isn’t the most important thing in this kind of game, but it is always nice. If you feel like it, you can read about the background story of the universe in the encyclopaedia, it is quite simple and reminds me a lot of other high-tech universes (such as WH40k) but it gives you an excuse to go shoot stuff around in the galaxy!.
Anyway, you like twin stick shooters and you think you might like the idea of a bit more strategic approach to the genre?, give this one a go, it is a well-made game.

This game is like crack! Addicting af.

Controls work flawlessly to the point of complete sync with your character and (for the first time in my gaming life) with the rest of your team (provided they understand the right way to deal with a situation).
The Galactic map makes you feel like a community working together, determined to win the war. I like the statistics on the left of the map, showing you how many times people died, killed others due to friendly fire, and how many enemies 'we' have killed in this conquest.
Your tools to take over enemy planets consist of a passive skill, a main weapon, a pistol, and 4 other active skills known as stratagems - activated by a d-pad combination. At first you'll feel extremely limited as you start out with a rather meagre selection of strats, but as you keep doing missions you'll unlock new ones, and devise new strategies to go along with them.
This game is a co-op game at heart. You could try to do some missions on your own, but for the higher levels you'll have to work together, mostly with strangers, to take on the harder goals. And you get rewarded for it with new skills, but more importantly - an amazing experience.
I especially like in this game, the cool movie-like moments. Like jumping for cover so your teammates could save your surprised ass from getting killed, or holding off the enemies as your team race for the shuttle at the end. I'm sure you'll find your unique experiences as I have if you decide to get this game.
And the etiquette that evolved from the limited expressions in the game, and the fact almost no one uses a mic as to not miss an opportunity to get the jump on a passing patrol - is so charming, and even gets you more immersed in this world.
The lore is basically a tongue-in-cheek parody on a futuristic, space-flight able, totalitarian government. I don't want to spoil anything, but the game doesn't really have a story. But if you do get the game be sure to check the encyclopedia. It made me snicker.

On to the bad (at the time of writing this review):
    - Since the game is P2P, the game can often drop connection, making you lose your progress in the mission.
    - Not many customization options. I remember a few times that I actually confused my character with someone else's in the midst of battles. But maybe that just happens to me, so take it with a grain of salt. But something i was expecting was being able to change colours or have a unique pattern on your vehicles.
    - Not much variety in missions. Personally I like this fact, as it lets me perfect the way I approach them, and experiment with new ways..

However, one thing REALLY bugs me, and keeps this from being a 9 or maybe 10. That is the DLC.
If you reach the later game levels and bosses, you can't skip the DLC. In this day and age it is acceptable to 'lock' a certain part of a game (that you might've bought at it's full price) behind a paywall.
And by the time you understand this, you're already invested in the experience.
You may be able to do it if someone that bought these DLCs joins your game, or your team shares your determination to retry the level until you pass it. Usually this isn't the case.

One thing I wasn't sure where to put in, was that the gaming sessions can be very tense. I end up getting exhausted after an hour or so. But your mileage may vary.

I love how all the players are playing together in a common real-time galactic campaign. Any independent accomplishment will give you the feeling that you are contributing to the whole community. Which is probably the reason why the people you meet online are mostly friendly.

You can unlock many items for free just by playing, and those will be just as strong as the dlc items. Actually, you can just use your starting weapon and be as strong as you would be with a weapon unlocked at level 25 for example. Yet it's great to have the options to try out new strategies, and Helldivers is a lot about that. I personally recommend getting the dlcs for full experience.

I feel the game could use a better opening cinematic. I was turned off at first with the mediocre artwork. And it will be great to see other visual improvements and item additions which I'm sure the developers are working on.
