They are complaining about manual reloading, not enough ammo, stratagem key combos etc. Are these guys for real? It is the formula on which this game thrives. It finds a great balance between strategizing and working as a team, and simply blowing sh*t up. I am quite far into the game and ammo has never really been an issue. It is simply about being able to prioritize your load out before going into a mission and which team member provides ammo drops and when. (To get my point across I am playing the game with my wife and four year old son) Having to key combo stratagems adds a level of intensity and challenge to the battlefield and quite honestly if they made it a one button action, it would make the game extremely boring.

The visual style of the game is engrossing and reminds me of a Blizzard title - polished. Character movement and general animations are smooth and satisfying to watch. The sound effects are noticeable and immersive. Units have some hilarious chirps, enemy mobs make threatening gestures and again the kill effects are satisfying and make for an extremely addictive experience. I also cannot understand how people are complaining about repetitiveness. Yes, it is repetitive, but the above mentioned mechanics make it a fun repetition. Kind of like the fun you had slaughtering mob after mob in (insert any mmo, rpg hack and slash here).

To top all this off, each player gains experience per level, amount of kills, objectives completed within a mission, relics found etc. The leveling system is obviously not as deep as other titles out there (like Skyrim as a rather extreme example), but its depth adds enough to make an impact in the game. There are a plethora of weapons to choose from and each weapon has a skill tree to level up making your desired weapon(s) of choice more powerful to suit your style of play. You can also upgrade your stratagems in a similar fashion.

Another unique touch is the system zone contribution progress bar, which increases each time an online player(s) completes a mission and dominates a planet. When this bar is filled, it initiates a global offensive attack on the alien home world in question, adding a greater sense of immersion knowing there are thousands of other 'Helldivers' out there kicking butt like you all for a common goal - freedom and liberation!

Overall his game is a fun, well balanced, extremely polished twin stick shooter, satisfying in every aspect and it really shines playing it couch coop.

I love how all the players are playing together in a common real-time galactic campaign. Any independent accomplishment will give you the feeling that you are contributing to the whole community. Which is probably the reason why the people you meet online are mostly friendly.

You can unlock many items for free just by playing, and those will be just as strong as the dlc items. Actually, you can just use your starting weapon and be as strong as you would be with a weapon unlocked at level 25 for example. Yet it's great to have the options to try out new strategies, and Helldivers is a lot about that. I personally recommend getting the dlcs for full experience.

I feel the game could use a better opening cinematic. I was turned off at first with the mediocre artwork. And it will be great to see other visual improvements and item additions which I'm sure the developers are working on.

Sadly, Helldivers lacks to many design flaws to be a good game.

    Especially:

    1. All players of a mission are restricted to the same screen, although they are connected via Internet. This restriction is only normal for offline koop games. Leads to following problems:

    - Line of sight is greatly reduced compared to single player, as the screen centers in the middle of the players position. Which leads to the tactic to fire blindly in directions where enemies MIGHT come along.
    - Frequently one player happens to fall back and be OFF SCREEN. Thus, he can't see what is happening with him and dies.

    2. Usage of equipment is a chore. You need to press certain key combinations for equipment to activate. Often in the midst of an chaotic battle, which leads to mistyping very often. Same applies for activating mission targets. This is ok for the latter, but inacceptable for own equipment. Imagine a Diablo 3 where you have to type long key combinations to use your skills. This leads to following consequences:

    - At the beginning of each mission and every time a new player arrives, equipment has to be summoned. However, the existing group regularly doesn't want to wait until the new players has summoned his toys.

    - More powerful equipment has longer combinations. This would be ok, but leads to players not using them as they are not really usable for the desired situations. Additionally, more powerful equipment tends to kill your comrades more easily, as friendly fire in this game is always on...

    3. Equipment is unbalanced, especially in teams. There is equipment which can be used indefinitly apart from cooldowns. And there is equipment that you can summon ONE TIME. If you die, this equipment drops to the ground. In hectic situations this means you often won't be able to retrieve your equipment - or it is stolen by your comrades instead. Consequently, most players in groups don't use equipment that will be dropped on death.

    4. Equipment progress is a fatal misdesign. You get new equipment mostly from completing planets with increasing difficulty. So, if you don't want to play overly chaotic, hectic and often impossible missions, your game progression comes to an end at half the game. However, you don't need the higher equipment in the easier missions. Nonetheless this cuts the progression content severely.

    5. Respawn system is ridiculous. On lower difficulties, it is possible to defeat enemy groups and have some rest, as new spawned groups take some time to get to you. On higher difficulties, there are ALWAYS enemies around, the only option is then to press forward and complete mission objectives while fighting enough enemies to proceed. Tactics are then non-existing. In many cases it is easier to run away from the current path than to try to get forward on the previously selected. Tedious.

    6. Single Player is possible, but broken as well. On the one hand, many of the multiplayer mistakes are gone. You have a full line of sight and you can retrieve fallen equipment any time. On the other hand, every difficulty other than easy is meant for groups. The only option to single them is to avoid fighting at all. This requires a special equipment not being available from the start. And of couse it offers some tactical depth. But why did I want to play a shooter then? The other option is to stay at easy missions, but these get boring very very fast.

    Conclusion:

Depending on player type, Helldivers quickly leads either to frustration or to boredom. It is no bad game in terms of general game mechanics, but it could have been far better in keeping the players at bay. In the current state, I can't recommend buying it. It is challenging, yes. But it does so not with tactical depth like XCom, but with chaotic situations, friendly fire and other distractions. This can be done better - and has been done better before.

On the other hand, the missions/objectives and map design suck hard. The kind of empty sandbox square map where you have the same mini-objectives (most of the time stay in position while a countdown goes on) placed randomly that get repeated over and over again from one mission to another. The enemies just spawn randomly indefinitely instead of being placed at strategic positions. I was expecting more fleshed out quests, you know with exploration, waypoints, events, bosses and such. After tonight, I don't expect the game to evolve much more than what I already saw. A bit disappointing and overrated for this reason.

It's like if Destiny were top down and actually fun. But seriously, this is a blast in co-op. I personally would skip if you weren't planning on playing it with friends, as the missions get repetitive.

The community seems also to understand very well the concept of working together and avoiding friendly fire. Tons of fun! Get it!

If you like playing tough dual sticks shooters with some friends, this is the game you need.

    Pros:
    - Best coop seen since a very long time

Fantastic game, but very much multiplayer-centric. It isn't much fun solo, but it is so much fun with friends. I have to knock it down to an 8 for now, though, because of matchmaking issues. Helldivers is a top-down twin stick shooter. It has a very minimal story, and you pretty much get the gist of things from the opening cinematic. You join the helldivers to protect your way of life, and as a helldiver, you fight battles protecting, resources, assests, and the influence of Super Earth.

Some missions will have you reactivating anti-air defense systems, retieving lost black-boxes, and defending resource convoys before extracting. Youl'l be doing all this while fighting hordes of enemies which will progressively become more diffcult as you move from a level 1 planet up to a level 12 planet.

You can capture a planet by completing all missions on that planet. Each mission has a certain amount of influence that is rewarded at completion of each planet and is added to the overall "war effort." The war effort is a feature in this game that is supppsed to keep the community invested and this is how it works: You have a Campaign Map of the entire galaxy, in the center of the galaxy is Super Earth. The galaxy is split up in to three sections, each owned by the games enemy faction. Each Faction has a set of "sectors," some controled by super earth, and some controlled by its respective faction. If one enemy faction takes all sectors and is able to attack Super Earth. The Helldivers lose the war, the map is reset and a new "session" begins. However, this also applies to the enemy factions homeworlds. This is where the influence matters. Once the Helldivers comeplely fill the Influence bar, they take the sector, pushing the enemy front closer their homeworld.

Gameplay is just like any other two stick shooter. Left stick moves and the right stick aims and the shoulder buttons do things like shoot and throw gernades. The support (stratgems) system is pretty unique, requiring you to do button combos to call them in. I also like the fact everything can kill you. This often leads to some extermely funny (and frustrating) moments.

Overall I gave this game a nine because ay the moment their is no invite system and matchmaking is a bit of a mess. But Arrowhead is already on top of it and will be releasing a series of patches in the coming days. If like games like Left 4 Dead or Magicka and if you ever played alien swarm on PC then youl'l most likely enjoy this game. I highly reccomened this game and think that most people who are suffering from the console drought will welcome this game with open arms.

I love twin stick shooters, so this was a day one purchase for me, however, as of now I'm not a big fan of the short missions. The first 4 missions that I have played have all consisted of completing 1 objective, like activating a SAM launcher, and then moving to the extraction point, and ending the mission. I do like the drop in/drop out multi-player, but so far of the missions I've played, players drop in right at the end, and dont really get to experience anything. So for now I've had to switch my lobby to private to stop from ruining everyone else's experience of dropping into my game when I have already completed the objective. I really hope that the more that I play, the better the missions will get, so that it really gives me an incentive to play multi-player. I'm sure it will, bit in the early missions its just not worth it to force would be teammates to join in just to view a loading screen. Expand

From the videos I watched Helldivers seemed like the sort of run-n-gun shooter we would enjoy. Some mindless bug splattering nonsense that we can switch off our brains for and enjoy. Sadly this was NOT the case.

The game, to our dismay, is overly complicated by making you actually run out of ammo(which there is very little of) and making you have to reload your gun manually. On top of that they toss in the Stratagem junk where you have to sit there typing in a code to get a drop of more ammo or an auto-machine gun that you have to hide from or otherwise be killed by. This all makes for a very lame, very frustrating time. My girlfriend and I were greatly disappointed in the game after only 20 minutes. If they had simply given this a Geometry Wars control scheme and cut out all the low-ammo/reload crap and upped the number of monsters to kill we would have enjoyed the game.

In summary this game is not worth all the hype it has gotten. I dunno where people are getting 9's and 10's for this game, but it's the crappiest game I've played lately and it didn't take long to turn me off to it. I wish I could get my money back on this, but we all know that isn't gonna happen.

Hello everyone B-rod here again to review Helldivers Masters of the Galaxy. When Arrowhead Game Studios made this game what they were doing was writing a love letter to Starship Troopers. This game is like if you take Starship Troopers, the future part of Terminator, and Pandorum then just mixed into a blender. Sadly with the zero amount of story that is in this game we must just jump into graphics and sound.

The games sound is good for the most part. The guns is what really sticks out to me. Unlike most games where you can reload as often as you please. This game takes a realistic take on reloading where if you reload prematurely then you might lose half a clip. This is hard to overcome at first. The game uses a unique sound to tell you when you are almost out of bullets. Besides that the rest is fairly generic. The game looks good but desilent. The planets you go to might be different terrain but they all end up being the same. You never invade a planet with a base or town or anything really. The character models seem like they took Destiny's idea and just said, "how about we make that with more capes". The enemy design is at least unique, but unless you play on a harder difficulty you will rarely see variant of enemies.

The gameplay is the most team killing co-op game in its existence. Let me tell you what can kill you besides enemies. Players shooting, driving, players turrets shooting, player calling in supplies to help the battle, you calling in supplies, your own turret, not stopping a vehicle before you exit, and lets not forget a new player joining or just spawning. All that and more is trying to kill you. (and people say Dark Souls is for masochist) The game is a top down dual joystick shooter, which is a fun style of game but not lasting in my opinion. It has a level up system to make yourself more badass, but it seems like it takes forever to earn the points and when you fully upgrade a weapon I never saw much of a difference. The game has so many support options that you can call into battle to save your ass. Except if you are in a real pickle you don't have time to press up, up,down, left, left, right, for an air strike. The game is hard as hell and if you are like me and enjoy more of a single player experience then this game isn't for you. Hell as a co-op focused experience I wish it was easier to get rid of trolls. I had a couple of times I was almost done with a planet and people joined and spent the entire time killing each other ruining my reward.

Overall the game is long yet can get repetitive at the same time. If you have friends that own this I can see this being days of bug killing, robo-smashing fun. If you don't I'd honestly say don't bother because playing with random people can be frustrating and alone is kinda boring. I still like the game but could never recommend it to the average gamer. If you're looking for a co-op game to play with friend or girlfriend this is it. I give it a 3/5. I leave with a question. Why the hell can't we just get a Starship Troopers game already?

Organised chaos: Don't expect to be a camper, sniper, or tactician in any way when you get into the multi-player. As swarms of enemies approach, you will do well just to organise yourself enough with others not to have cross-fire! It's manic. Expect a high death count. Expect to die from players re-spawning landing on you. But with this, expect a lot of fun!

The game feels familiar in combat and even the enemies, but the graphics are very polished and the sound is exceptional and very engaging. As a free game I think this may stay on my harddrive for a while

Seeing that I have little friends to who happen to own the game, I hop in the game with no mic. I found that the players you meet are very easy to communicate with due to the voice commands. Sharing a screen with the other players was also a great idea since it forces the players to work together. Couch co-op is also a blast as long as you're not playing with people below the age of 6 because kids can get a little... Team-killy? I had played with a six year old locally and 2 more people just so happened to join the game and he got mad that they were taking the ammo he couldn't pick up and killed us all xD

Even singleplayer was fun and challenging, but still doable. I loved going into worlds alone that I was sure I would never beat and then turn out on top. It's an equally great feeling to be playing alone and see that 3 other people had joined your mission.

The factions are my favorite part of the game. The 3 races are so different from each other and you really have to invest some time to learn how to change your strategy and thought patterns depending on the race you're going up against. For instance, when fighting against the Cyborgs, you may want to bring a shotgun to take out multiple enemies at once because the cyborgs rely more on numbers than actual strength, but when you're going against the Illuminate, you might want to bring a rail gun or laser weapon to take out the enemies that try to one-shot-kill you from a distance.

The only problems I had with the game its self were the bugs. There was one instance where I broke from the group and had my own screen that wouldn't even follow where I went. This only happened once, though, so it's no big problem.

HellDivers has made me glad I've gotten a PS4 and I can't say that about all the PS4 games I've played. Despite a few bugs I've encountered, it's a very solid game that does everything right. It hits that sweet-spot between difficult and fun, making you laugh more at the failures rather than getting frustrated.

This game is like crack! Addicting af.

Controls work flawlessly to the point of complete sync with your character and (for the first time in my gaming life) with the rest of your team (provided they understand the right way to deal with a situation).
The Galactic map makes you feel like a community working together, determined to win the war. I like the statistics on the left of the map, showing you how many times people died, killed others due to friendly fire, and how many enemies 'we' have killed in this conquest.
Your tools to take over enemy planets consist of a passive skill, a main weapon, a pistol, and 4 other active skills known as stratagems - activated by a d-pad combination. At first you'll feel extremely limited as you start out with a rather meagre selection of strats, but as you keep doing missions you'll unlock new ones, and devise new strategies to go along with them.
This game is a co-op game at heart. You could try to do some missions on your own, but for the higher levels you'll have to work together, mostly with strangers, to take on the harder goals. And you get rewarded for it with new skills, but more importantly - an amazing experience.
I especially like in this game, the cool movie-like moments. Like jumping for cover so your teammates could save your surprised ass from getting killed, or holding off the enemies as your team race for the shuttle at the end. I'm sure you'll find your unique experiences as I have if you decide to get this game.
And the etiquette that evolved from the limited expressions in the game, and the fact almost no one uses a mic as to not miss an opportunity to get the jump on a passing patrol - is so charming, and even gets you more immersed in this world.
The lore is basically a tongue-in-cheek parody on a futuristic, space-flight able, totalitarian government. I don't want to spoil anything, but the game doesn't really have a story. But if you do get the game be sure to check the encyclopedia. It made me snicker.

On to the bad (at the time of writing this review):
    - Since the game is P2P, the game can often drop connection, making you lose your progress in the mission.
    - Not many customization options. I remember a few times that I actually confused my character with someone else's in the midst of battles. But maybe that just happens to me, so take it with a grain of salt. But something i was expecting was being able to change colours or have a unique pattern on your vehicles.
    - Not much variety in missions. Personally I like this fact, as it lets me perfect the way I approach them, and experiment with new ways..

However, one thing REALLY bugs me, and keeps this from being a 9 or maybe 10. That is the DLC.
If you reach the later game levels and bosses, you can't skip the DLC. In this day and age it is acceptable to 'lock' a certain part of a game (that you might've bought at it's full price) behind a paywall.
And by the time you understand this, you're already invested in the experience.
You may be able to do it if someone that bought these DLCs joins your game, or your team shares your determination to retry the level until you pass it. Usually this isn't the case.

One thing I wasn't sure where to put in, was that the gaming sessions can be very tense. I end up getting exhausted after an hour or so. But your mileage may vary.

Mastering this game requires some careful playing, you need to coop well with the other players, think of the abilities/weapons that make sense in the team, be careful with your aim (mainly, but no uniquely, because of friendly fire) etc.. If you go all crazy john Rambo, you’ll die quite quickly. I think it is a nice different gameplay, but if you’re just looking for some crazy mayhem fun, maybe you wanna look somewhere else.

I think everything else, sound, graphics etc…are ok, not great…but ok. It won’t prevent you from enjoying the game, and for me, this one is all about having fun, not jaw dropping scenarios. The variety of missions is decent, there could be a few more kind of missions, especially at low difficulty levels. It might feel a bit repetitive as I said, if you’re stuck playing low level missions a lot, as some missions only appear in higher difficulty levels, but still quite good.

In terms of background story of its universe, I think it does ok. This isn’t the most important thing in this kind of game, but it is always nice. If you feel like it, you can read about the background story of the universe in the encyclopaedia, it is quite simple and reminds me a lot of other high-tech universes (such as WH40k) but it gives you an excuse to go shoot stuff around in the galaxy!.
Anyway, you like twin stick shooters and you think you might like the idea of a bit more strategic approach to the genre?, give this one a go, it is a well-made game.

Boasting infinite randomly-generated missions and maps, dozens of unique weapons and stratagems, high skill cap gameplay that rewards awareness, quick decision making and constantly teaches the player new tricks, Helldivers is a brilliantly designed and executed game that stands amongst the best titles of the generation, and never stops giving.

As you rank up, you will discover certain tools and strategies that worst best. However, the real joy of Helldivers is trying out every weapon, every stratagem, and making them work.

The developers have released generous DLC in the form of new equipment. These are all worth the purchase, but there is no pay-to-win, here. All missions are beatable with the stock weapons and stratagems, but the DLC is there for those that love the game and want more.

Helldivers is almost certainly the best co-op title available on PS4, and there is an argument to be made that it is the best game, period, on the system. To call it an underappreciated gem would be an understatement. This is game that knows exactly what it is, and executes that vision to flawless perfection.
