I've been playing guitar for 15 years, playing every Guitar Hero at the hardest difficulty and this one is near unplayable. It feels way out of sync, you can't hear the parts you have to play (especialy the leads), half of the songs barely have guitar in them and the "live footage" is so cringe I sometimes feel embarrassed to be playing. Huge fail, don't buy this overpriced sh**.

while the new controller had a lot of potential for fun and fresh gameplay, the potential is completely ruined by a lack of features, and a pay to play business model.

That being said, the game is pretty bad. The calibration isn’t as bad as Rock Band 4, but it’s pretty impossible to get it dialed in perfectly if you play on expert. The set list is hilariously bad. For multiple 20 minute sets, you’re forced to play awful pop songs that barely have a guitar in them. Some of the songs don’t even have a guitar in them. Their idea of metal is the Hot Topic style “metal.”

The biggest problem in the game, though, is the difficulty gap between hard and expert. Hard is annoyingly simple while Expert is frustratingly difficult. The only way to get better is to just suck it up and play on guitar hero TV while listening to the annoying error sounds that you can’t mute. Also, there’s no practice mode when this is the game it would be most useful on.

I wish they would try again with the same idea and listen to the complaints, because guitar hero could still be fun, but this game barely deserves a 6/10.

This is sooo bad, it's a guitar hero game with no rock songs unless you want to pay money for them, there is also no training mode for specific sections. This game fails because it doesn't make you feel like a guitar hero, since 70 % of the songs in this game is pretty easy to play on an actuall guitar. I'm sorry but this is painfully bad.

The best, most varied and easily the most open Guitar Hero game to date. With a constantly updated tracklist with tons of variety in genre and difficulty, and one of the best base setlists in GH to date, this game's shortcomings in its lack of true online play and oddly devised 'pay for plays' system hardly end up hindering the experience.

It’s been just over five years since the last entry in the Guitar Hero franchise hit shelves. Warriors of Rock was packed with content, but it tread the same ground as the games before it, and combined with the oversaturation of the plastic peripheral market, the series was sent into hibernation.

Now, in 2015, Guitar Hero Live has brought the series back with a vengeance, and it has absolutely killer stage presence.

The first time players pick up the new — yes, still plastic — guitar controller, they’ll notice a slight change in format. And by slight change, we mean the game is totally different. The five colored buttons have been replaced by two columns of three buttons each, allowing players to more closely pretend they’re playing actual guitar.

The game’s tutorial walks players through the format change, and shows them how to strum chords, top and bottom frets and open notes. It takes a bit of getting used to. But this is what the genre needed. The series’ new developers, FreeStyleGames (DJ Hero series), stripped away the drum kits and basses and focused solely on guitar, though you can still sing along if you plug in a microphone.

An odd choice is how much of a departure the set list for Live is from previous entries. Sure, players don’t want the “all metal, all the time” list from 2005’s Guitar Hero, but why are artists like Skrillex, Eminem and Katy Perry here?

The songs aren’t bad by any means — they’re just a bit boring to rock out to, considering those tracks don’t have much guitar in them at all. This doesn’t take away from the main draws of Live, though, and players will notice the game has been split into two main segments, Live and Guitar Hero TV.

Live is the traditional campaign mode, but instead of creating a band and going through the motions, players will take on the persona of faux bands playing two different music festivals. There are grunge rockers, pop sensations and metalheads, and the game does diversity well. The coolest part of this mode is that every performance is done with full-motion video. This means the performances were actually recorded with real (sort of) crowds. Scenes are touched up with CG as backdrops, and the back halves of crowds look a bit uncanny.

This new feature is absolutely immersive, and it’s a blast until players realize there are only 40-some songs on-disc, which is fewer songs than every previous entry in the Guitar Hero series. But fret not. That’s where GHTV comes in. With elements of music streaming services like Spotify or Apple Music, this mode has a rotating set list of nearly 100 songs accompanied by their music videos.

Players use “plays” to perform songs, and these can be purchased with in-game currency or actual money.
While pay-to-play content is nothing new to the gaming industry, it’d be nice if we could actually keep the songs once we “play” them. In this case, it’s pay-per-play if you don’t want to rack up in-game money.

Overall, Guitar Hero Live set out to revitalize the music game genre, and it seems to be on the right track.
The stage is set. Now we’ll just have to see if players want an encore once the holiday season is over.

Far from perfect but a step in the right direction.

I got this after buying rockband 4 due to loving that series, Haven't been a guitar hero fan in a long time and honestly expected this to suck bad. Got it because it was on sale with the guitar and thought it would be worth a try. Immediately fell in love with the idea of guitar hero tv as well as the new layout of the controller.

The controller does take time to adjust to but hey, so did the old ones at first. The song selection in the main game mode is a mixed bag, mostly crappy stuff to my ears but thats a matter of opinion.
Tv mode however (which i thought was going to focus solely on microtransactions) is a gem of an idea. You play the game to get coins to spend on plays so you can play any song in the extended library when you want while the music video plays in the background.
This adds way more songs to the game and ergo more value and fun.

My one complaint would be that there is no dlc so far for the live mode as far as i can tell.

Summary: Not as good as rockband 4 which stays true to the old style and has amazing dlc and backwards compatibility with controllers/dlc but a fun step up for this particular franchise and one that sets itself apart from the rockband format.

Alot of complaining about the new layout - this is madness. Whilst it does create a learning curve for veteran players, as someone that has played guitar for over 20 years, the new layout is really a lot more realistic than the 5 colour PS3 style guitars. I found as a guitar player that the 'chord' structures a lot more familiar, it's like playing open chords a bit now. For my girlfriend, who also enjoyed it on PS3, this hasn't caused to much confusion converting to the new layout either. Ultimately, this is a guitar-simulation, and it feels that little more real with the new layout.

The game itself is split between a gig mode and an ' MTV' mode. There's not a great deal of content on the gigs, a healthy song list where each gig will be a set of 3 - 6 songs. The leap from PS3 to PS4 is really apparent here in that the cartoon graphics are gone, and a mock tongue-in-cheek real life bands take the stage alongside you, giving you cheesy thumbs up and nods when you make good progress, and look like you've killed their first born when it goes to pot. I love this mode, but after completeing the songs on harder levels, I felt a bit over it in a short amount of time. Player vs player is less competitive, or directly fighting as such.

This lack of re-playability on this mode would be a major flaw, but Guitar-Hero TVs 'TV mode' is therefore it's saviour. Endlessly streaming music videos to play along to doesn't sound breathtaking, but actually its the fun way to play. New music is added to the catalogue with updates (for free) and you can sit down without noticing the hours passing playing track after track. You're rewarded XP and coins to use to select the tracks if you wish to play a particular song.

The only real downside to the game is that there's no '18' age band... it's family orientated, which is fair enough, but for me, when I play Rage Against the Machine, having the "F you I won't do what you tell me" entire verse removed is a downer :(

This game is NOT pay to play - but - you CAN pay £4.99 for a 24 party pass to unlock all the songs to play . This seems pointless to me, but I appreciate if I had all the lads over and made a night of it, it would be useful. As said, if you grind the TV mode, you can earn endless amounts of 'free plays', I've about 30 something stocked up already. So - you CAN pick what you want, but why bother, I don't want to play the same song over and over till I 100% it, I'm happy to jam along to anything

A good game, it has enough to call itself New Gen, and it's a great party piece. Well worth your time for GH fans

combination of chords makes you feel the power of (real) guitar.

Indeed, I have some doubts regarding the song list being currently available within the game, nevertheless GHTV opportunity compensates these doubts completely. Looking forward to further enhancement of the game, especially channel 3. Multiplayer experience is also chalenging and you can compare yourself with the rest of the world and impove your guitar experience continuously. I like leveling-up, it is really working: after first day, I thhough I am never able to anyplay respective chords, but few more hours of training and I am ajusting my fingers accordingly with no explicit effort - this feels good:)

The only thing I am worry about is the quality of guitar. The equipment looks good so far but only time shows whether buttons survive (as I am kind of powerfull player). Frankly, I do not fully understand negative review as this game is woth og buying and the time spent on (ofc this is valid for the fan GH serie).

The new button layout is a good thing. I found it much easier to play once I got the feel for it as you could just need to move your fingers from the top to the bottom keys, rather than having to slide them up and down the guitar. This however is just my feelings for it as I like that it feels more attainable to get to higher difficulties with this layout, and I could definitely see how some may dislike it as it definitely took more skill with the old layout.

I hate having to pay to play more songs. I think this game may come with less songs than any Guitar Hero game so far, and that's wrong. A game with this few options of differing gameplay should have a robust library, and this game fails to do that. I also was very upset that the game came with so few older titles. Many of the songs are very Top 40-ish and recently made, and I liked playing Guitar Hero for the old school titles.

In closing, the game is fun. I had a good time playing this game for a few hours, but unless you are willing to pay the $99.99 for just a few hours of fun I would skip this game. I would only recommend it for true lovers of the series who are willing to dump some money into buying songs as well as the initial purchase price. I was lucky enough to grab the game on sale, which made it feel less like a cash grab game, but the game definitely needed to come with more to be worth it.

It is a challenge, and I'm fine with that, but I think the fun factor is taken out. I mastered the 5 button layout, but was always challenged with certain songs, and challenged by trying to get 100% on each song. So the challenge is there, but I feel like no matter how much practice I put into this, I may never get to the expert level of it.

2nd point, the soundtrack isn't all that deep. A lot of the songs are from the last 10 years, and seem to cater to a more modern audience, which is OK and understandable. But, for a game called Guitar Hero, some better songs featuring heavier guitar would be nice, and something that spans a few decades would be nice.

The hardware for the guitar is mostly nice. It's light, and easy to use, but the strum bar is loud when playing, almost to the point of annoyance. I think this has been a recurring theme for Guitar Hero guitars over Rock Band guitars, and it seems to be continuing.

The 2 things I really like are the presentation of the songs, in music video form or in live crowd form, and the GHTV feature are really nice. The presentation gives a different feel that no GH or Rock Band game has given before, while the GHTV, in the same right, gives a feature that hasn't been done before either.

All in all, it's hard to discredit Activision and all involved with GH Live for trying to make this different and unique, because they succeed in that respect. But, in doing so, the fun isn't there as it once was and because of it, I think Rock Band 4 may be the better game,

Guitar Hero Live is my first experience with the Guitar Hero series and boy, what a fantastic entry point. I was expecting an average to decent music rhythm game from the product but I was incredibly surprised by a fantastic new take on the aging genre.

Right from the get go, you're greeted with a fairly intuitive tutorial showcasing the basic moves/controller prompts first and then progressing to the more advanced moves. The whole single player component 'Guitar Hero Live' is portrayed as a cheesy FMV game which puts you as the guitarist in a band using pre-recorded footage recording specifically for the game. Depending on how you play, the crowd will either cheer for you, stare at you blankly or if you're doing really badly, even start booing you and throwing stuff on stage at you. It's a genuinely terrifying experience to start a song awfully and have three minutes of a virtual crowd breaking your concentration due to how loud they can be whilst booing you.

The setlist on the LIVE component comes with 42 songs with tracks from Fall Out Boy, Eminem, Bring Me The Horizon, OneRepublic and even Skrillex, which will sound bad for most people but I found the majority of the setlist to be perfectly fine and incredible fun to play.

To complete all of the content in the LIVE/single player component of the game, you shouldn't need more than a few hours free to dive in and indulge it all but even if it is short, it's satisfying to go from fairly small pits of people to gigantic crowds at the finales.

Now, onto the more controversial component of the game, Guitar Hero TV, an always online streaming music channel service which takes up the bulk of the game. Think back to when MTV actually played music all of the time and that's what you get here. An always running music channel which you can hop on whenever you wish to either play the songs which are currently streaming on either channel 1 or 2 or you can go and play a song of your choice from the TV component using a play token. Play tokens are built in microtransactions which are completely optional to the player and can be easily earned by playing through the streaming tracks on the two free channels. Most people condemn microtransations in retail games and I am one of them but in this case, I feel that the microtransations are incredibly fair to the player and they're one of the rare examples of microtransations done right.

Does this make Guitar Hero TV 'fee-to-play'? Perhaps but does that stop the gameplay from being fantastic and the microtransaction model actually being fair for the consumer? No, it doesn't and people rating the game 1's, 2's and 3's because of some OPTIONAL in-game purchases that you can avoid if you wish. Hell, you can even ignore GH:TV entirely and just play the LIVE mode and have hours of enjoyment, replaying all of the tracks, trying to get the highest score.

Overall, Guitar Hero Live is a fantastic experience and one of the best music rhythm games I've played in years, beating games like DJ Hero, Rock Band Blitz and Audiosurf.

GH Live is cheesy and GHTV could be improved with a song-buying feature
but they're both fun and different and TV is really weirdly addictive
how "realistic" does a game need to be when you're standing in front of a TV with a plastic guitar in your hands? i love the reviews that are all like "GH has forgotten its ROCK N ROLL ROOTS!!" ... lol k buddies. if that's what rock and roll is

also people fail to mention that the Skrillex song in the game is "Bangarang", which is perfect for the electro-rock set it's in and *GASP* is actually fun to play! and the eminem song was produced by Rick Rubin so whatevs menz

GHL is a great game if you’re playing it alone. I appreciate all the new ideas but I’m really disappointed that it is no longer a party game. [13/2015, p.62]

GH Live brings plenty of fresh ideas, but a few annoyances stop it short of achieving true greatness. [Christmas 2015, p.]
