At first I was set back by the horrendous tank controls, which are mandatory if you are doing a platinum run, but was able to negate them due to the great story and fun-ish gameplay. However that all changed midway through when the puzzles went form logic-based to trial and error based and the plot started losing steam very fast. By the end of the game I was tired of dealing with bad controls and an annoying gameplay loop, and I had fallen out of love with the characters and plot.

While Grim Fandango probably was a masterpiece back in the 90's, today it's more of an interesting window to a simpler time, that couldn't really stand on it's own when compared to the modern gaming landscape.

There was always something that fascinated me about this game. Perhaps it was the ideology that "hey, this game is considered one of the greatest of all time, but yet I feel like I've heard nothing about it," but for some reason, I had some fascination when it came to "Grim Fandango." Now, I'll be the first to admit I'm not intimately familiar with Tim Schafer's game in any way: I tried to play the first "Psychonauts" game but surprisingly, despite my love for platformers, I lost interest and ended up dropping the game. That said, my morbid curiosity got the best of me when I found the remaster of "Grim Fandango" at a discounted price on the PlayStation Store, and so I wanted to give it a shot. And I've gotta say that I certainly can see the hype.
"Grim Fandango" is a game I can see having a massive influence on other titles: beyond it being an early 3D game, I can see that this game gave way to a lot of point-and-click games and graphic adventures that we hear so much about today. The controls are fluid (especially with the new version's addition of standard controls, as opposed to limiting you to tank controls), and while the game isn't your most interactive (since it's a graphic adventure), it more than makes up for it with smart design and game mechanics that remain intriguing to this day. Graphically, the game still looks great today, and while many have criticized the remastered version for not updating the pre-rendered backgrounds, I personally thought they looked so good that I simply wasn't inclined to notice. The soundtrack is also brilliant, and the storytelling in this game is so sharp: I love how the story so brilliantly interweaves its film noir-based style with a great tone of parody, while incorporating the themes of Mexican and Aztec mythology so wonderfully, and this wouldn't have been possibly without the sharp and funny dialogue and terrific characters.
Now, admittedly, there are some imperfections here that hold things back a bit. For starters, I do think the game has a little bit of a learning curve to some of its puzzles that may turn some gamers off, and I think the game could've benefitted from something of a hint system. Also, I have to dock a point off of the remastered version specifically because, well one, there are a few graphical glitches that can be a bit distracting (at one point, Manny got stuck in his standing animation and I was moving him while he was standing still), but also because while it brings some welcome changes, it disappointingly did not bring an autosave feature along with it, which given that this is a game that has you going back and forth a lot, really could've been a big help.
Regardless, I can absolutely see why "Grim Fandango" is so widely loved and revered by gamers, and while my score may not show it (it probably would've been a 9 if not for some of the problems I had with this remastered version), I definitely buy into said hype. "Grim Fandango" is a wonderful game that's gonna stick with me for a while, and I highly suggest that if you haven't played it, please do yourself a favor. This game deserves more attention, because it's really an amazing experience.

The art, universe, and story-telling are brilliant. Gameplay is satisfying and holds well with time. Definitely quite a few glitches and wrinkles where I had to full restart to get 'unstuck.' A lot of the puzzles are challenging, but make sense, however there are definitely a few that I'm not sure how anyone would ever think to use this item in that location.

That being said, the remastered edition is quite buggy, so save often. In beating the game, I had it crash six times, I got stuck on a ladder once, and loading menu items took long.

Remember to save often, and don't be ashamed to use a guide. If you're just in it for the incredible storytelling, a guide through the silly puzzles doesn't detract from the experience.

However, some puzzles (which is the core of the gameplay) makes i wish i had a crystal ball. Even if they're not illogical (for the most part), the clues are too vague to be considered minimally helpful and sometimes the only way to made it, is to play trial and error until find the solution. More than visual refinaments (almost none by the away), this remastered version of Grim Fandango, could have had a hint system or some additional information. Certainly would not hurt.
In conclusion, if the puzzles starting to get irritating, i suggest using a faq, at least to reach the end of this amazing story.

Grim Fandango is one of the figurehead of classic point and click adventures from the 90's let's see how time as treated him.

Technically the game is a big disappointment and don't deserve the "remastered" in its title, it's more a port than a remastered, which is very clear if you use the option to see the original graphics) it's nothing like Monkey Island on PS3 that had seen all its textures change. So yes it's ugly by today standards but what is unforgivable is that the game suffers from framerate drops and some major bugs that will make the game crash (and given the fact that there is no autosaving you can loose a lot of your progress with that). Really not a good job from this point of view.

The gameplay is a classic point and click, you'll go from scene to scene interact with various elements to solve puzzles. Those are well designed in general, maybe one or two solution were a bit WTF in my opinion but nothing too frustrating.

But the more important thing about those game was the story (that's how you differentiated them) and Grim Fandango is a model of clever and funny writing in an original setting. You'll have a lot of fun while playing as Manny Calavera for the 6 to 8 hours it will take to complete the game, a fair time for its price.

So in conclusion Grim Fandango is a very good point and click with exceptional writing but this version does not deserve the Remastered title (and the extra bucks that come with it), advisable to old school gamers that are looking for classic Point and click.

I mean the game is really good, very funny, story is good and Manny is just one of the most lovable characters I’ve ever seen, but I don’t know, there is something missing and I cannot quite explain what it is. If you like this kind of adventures you will definitely like this one GO FOR IT, but for me there are quite a few better classics out there such as monkey islands 1-3, day of the tentacle, prisoners of ice, broken sword 1-2, discworld, L. S. Larry (specially 7)… Summarising, it is a really good game, just getting to know Manny makes it worth playing, but it has barely made it to my top ten list of point and click adventures, there are better things out there and, specifically, better Tim Schafer stuff (even broken age felt better, well…only chapter 1, not 2). The world is far from immersive, with only small clusters of explorable space available at any given time. The animation is okay I suppose but not really my cup of tea. Using skeletons as a model doesn't allow for much variety and it all becomes monotonous visually after a very short while. But my biggest BY FAR is the obtuseness of the puzzles. Some of them are so obscure as to be virtually impossible to figure out logically. But worst of all, there is really no sense of reward when you do. It's just more of the same each time without increasing the fun factor. This would be worthwhile if it was free but it worth paying for at any price in my opinion. Grim Fandango was a game i originally had no interest in in 1998. I just didn't think it seemed appealing, probably due to the point-and-click genre dying down at that point. I can say now that i regret not getting Grim Fandango back in the day, for it is now in my top ten favorite games of all time.

There is not anything bad i can really say about Grim Fandango. The story in entrancing, keeping you locked in it's world of fantastic writing and original, developed characters. Even background characters that you only share 2 or 3 lines with are interesting. The story takes you to a variety of different locations, from the ocean-side town of Rubacava, to the very gates of the 9th underworld itself. All the characters are well voice acted, and the dialogue is consistently funny.

The gameplay is your standard point and click stuff: walk around, talk to people, pick up stuff, solve puzzles, it's all great fun. While some might complain about the immense difficulty that some of the puzzles boast, with the answers being extremely cryptic, but i don't mind at all. A hefty challenge is what i like to see in a PAC game, which most new ones seem to lack. Now, i could complain about the counter-intuitive "tank controls", but even they got that right. The default control is scheme is NOT tank controls, you must change this from the options screen. I cannot tell you how great that is. I actually played the game through a second time with tank controls, not for the trophy, but so i can play the game the way it was meant to be played.

Remaster wise, I cannot speak too much for not playing the original. Some things i can talk about though is the enhanced textures, which can be changed to original by the push of a button. Pairing that with tank controls make it a full retro experience. I hear some things from others about the music being redone, and the aspect ratio changed, but for me non of that matters, for this is the only Grim Fandango experience i have played.

Overall, this game is simply a masterpiece on all fronts. There is just not a bad thing i can say about it. This is why i'm giving Grim fandango a 10/10

I have noticed some odd visual glitches with the character models and once I have encountered an annoying audio bug where a low pitched tone kept looping. I had the game crash a couple times, and once I had a model float off through the wall after I talked with it and soft lock the game. These issues are not worth a dismissal for the game for it is still a classic. It's just a poor remaster.

    Year: 1998

    What Kind of Adventure?

    It was a graphic adventure.

    Was it fun?

I want to say yes, I certainly understand why its such a popular game. The story is very interesting but for me the problem is that the whole game is a series of puzzles. I’m not great at puzzles and its a game where you have to have a lot of patience to just kind of walk around and slowly figure out what the game wants from you. Its one of my closest friends favorite games but he has played it several times so he knows what he needs to do and can just sit back and enjoy the story.

    Are there any similar games?

Not that I am aware of, this was a whole new experience for me.

    Favorite Character?

Sal. Glottis. “I’m not too big, the cars are just too small.” That’s all you need to know about this character.

    Would you play it again?

    Probably not.

    Any Complaints?

Far too many puzzles for me. I enjoy a simple puzzle but these are complex puzzles and you really need to plan ahead. I don’t want to ruin the game for anyone but I will say, if you don’t look up what you need to do next and just try to figure it out on your own, its going to take you 20+ hours. If you decide to play it again, it’ll take you less than half of that time. It seems like this maybe a game that gets better with every time you play it.

Its a shame there isn't more appreciation for this game, but at the same time I can totally understand why it doesn't appeal to today's market.
I'm grateful they are re-releasing these old games, however they need to check their price-point and ask themselves why they are doing it and whether the demand, existent or not, justifies the release.
Its a good game, but its horribly dated and without a guide, forget it, you'll never finish it.
A bit of fun to be had but be prepared to be frustrated and annoyed if you want to power through without a guide (Ps. some guides online are very, very poor)

The puzzles are way way too random, illogical, convoluted. At first I was really digging the art style, writing, and atmosphere, then I got really stuck after trying everything I could think of. I looked up what to do online, and it was just such random ridiculous stuff there were no clues for, there was no "Aha!" moment.

Grim Fandango is one of the best game out of there, but this version is a poorly made remaster, even Resident Evil HD can surpass this, looks like that they didn't add anything, the models are weak, no improvements, is more a FFVII PC port than a WW HD Remaster, the game is very good, but the reamsters are judged by their change, and this doesn't have one.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. After playing the fantastic Day of the Tentacle, the temptation to play to another graphic adventure game designed by Tim Schafer was strong and Grim Fandango was the perfect candidate.

So Grim Fandango is set in a world parallel to ours, the "Eighth Underworld", the realm of the dead, where we all go once we die and based on the life we lived, we can expect a more or less long journey to reach the eternal peace. After playing Brütal Legend, it doesn't surprise me how Schafer was able to create a "new" world so well made, unique, with its Calaca art style, set in an eternal early 20th century flat Earth and that clearly fuses more elements of various afterlife visions in the world. And it's fascinating and full of meaning just as in this world, so different, yet so similar to ours, its inhabitants can get used to it, and therefore choose a safe and laid life in the Eighth Underworld, rather than spending years trying to find the path to eternal peace. I also appreciated the vision of death after death: through sprouting guns, life as we know it grows as flowers sprout on the bony corpses, so that even the dead can die again... killed by life. Damn, that was good. Manny's final words at the end of the story are clear, yet they leave a little space for interpretation: "Nobody knows what's gonna happen at the end of the line, so you might as well enjoy the trip"... melancholic, maybe Manny reminds us that what we just saw is a fantasy story and that no Eighth Underworld or afterlife probably exist. Who knows? That's exactly the point to it.

Grim Fandango has a silent gaming interface, which is there but can not be seen. In fact, making use of a definitely more advanced game engine than in the past, contextual actions result by Manny pointing his eyes and attention on something, thus eliminating a point-and-click interface with the 9 commands setting. As a result, the game is evidently simplified in the mechanics, compared to older graphic adventures. The juice still remains the same: observe objects, take them, combine their use with each other, or the scenario or give them to other characters. The game is divided into four acts (or years), but it's only in the second one that the real problems begin to appear. Now: you can design a graphic adventure video game as you want but, given the nature of combining elements each other or with other elements or characters, it would be appropriate to proceed for smaller areas, portions of the same level. A tot of puzzles here, then move on to the next area, and a tot of puzzles there. For some reason, which I really can not understand, Tim decided to make the second act, "Rubacava", an entire jumble of puzzles on puzzles, far from each other and with a logic only partly clear. Rubacava seemed to be like a confused HUB, of those found in role-playing video games. It would have been enough to divide Rubacava upper part from the lower part, and so in this way the whole second act would have a more sustained, more balanced, rhythm in the gameplay. But no. At times incomprehensible, frustrating, even boring: "Year 2, Rubacava" is the reason why Grim Fandango is not perfect. I don't deny I had to use a guide to solve some puzzles, and I'm not ashamed, since I probably could have been stuck there for I don't know how much long. An example? It wasn't clear (to me) that seaman Naranja should have even thought as dead so that Manny could embark on the ship in his place. Instead I found the other three acts quite balanced and exciting, especially the third and fourth, where the game manages to give its best.

The game is graphically a step forward to the older graphic adventures. Similar to Resident Evil's 3D model on static backgrounds, Grim Fandango returns with a good visual level. This remaster is actually more faithful to its definition and, compared to the excellent remake-like restoration work on DOTT, this job seems lazier and the only improvements are a better lighting system and augmented texture resolution on 3D models. McConnel's soundtrack also benefited restoration and is one of the strengths of the game; very, very fitting. Besides these, it has nothing else to offer.

Grim Fandango was a beautiful journey and Tim Schafer certainly created one of the most unique video games ever. In the face of a phenomenal and well written plot and good gameplay, the delicate balance – between puzzles quantity and level articulation – has, however, failed in the central part of the game and in graphic adventures this can generate more frustration than anything else. Among the last exponents of a golden age that no longer exists, Grim Fandango remains a must-play video game, whether you are a lover of graphic adventures or not.

Trama avvincente e profonda. Personaggi memorabili.
Enigmi impegnativi ma sempre con una logica.
    Stile grafico unico.
    Un capolavoro.
PS: L'ho giocata solo nel 2021, quindi ovviamente la qualità della grafica e i controlli non possono essere al passo coi tempi. Il mio voto è riferito al valore del videogame nell'epoca in cui è uscito la prima volta.

    A MORTAL MASTERPIECE

    BEFORE WE BEGIN:
Grim Fandango Remastered was originally developed by LucasArts, remastered and financed by Double Fine, and released in 2015. It brings back several noteworthy graphical improvements from the original title dating back to 1998.
The game is 100% complete in its pc version.

    DEAD, UNDEAD:
The introduction to the game's plot is extremely straightforward and crystal clear. The superb quality of art direction that this title has to offer is already underscored by the extremely creative LucasArts and Double Fine logos alone, which always take the style of the reference game and change from time to time. Thanks to the introductory cutscene, the player is immediately able to understand everything that revolves around the protagonist Manny Calavera, a death travel agent dedicated to earning enough to reach the ninth afterlife. As soon as the movie ends, the player finds himself with a fresh assignment to fulfill and can begin his work immediately. The first thing that jumps out at you, or rather, that does not jump out at you is the lack of a HUD, this is because throughout the game it will be the player's job to unearth the interacting objects, making the adventure more interactive and surprising.

    PURSUING DEATH:
The game gameplay is that of a typical early 2000s graphic adventure, with a focus by the developers to move away from what was the usual point-and-click of that era. The Remastered version then made it possible to use the mouse, which was originally blocked. As mentioned above, one of the main features of Grim Fandango is that it does not have any always-on HUD. Like other graphic adventures, there is an inventory of possessed objects and a menu of interactions with objects set up on the map, but unlike other LucasArts titles it is not possible to join possessed objects together. The additional mother feature is, of course, the puzzles. They are varied and almost always require the ingenuity of the player. Some of them, however, rely far too much on dialogue between the various characters. This becomes a problem given the inability to listen to some of them several times, making the solution of the riddles almost impossible to understand and causing them to expire at a mere use of all available options. This forces the player to wander the map in search of often nonexistent solutions. The game plot turns out to be extremely varied. It spans four years where Manny will accomplish various tasks, with numerous intrigues to be solved, both work-related and emotional.

    DEADLY GOOD:
Grim Fandango's graphics, whether original or remastered, are certainly one of its focal points. It still manages to be stunning to this day, with extremely detailed and inspired models. Thanks to meticulous techniques put in place by the development team, many of the models turn out to be well-defined and far superior to those out there. The atmosphere that the art in this game manages to create is unmatched, with styles of Mexican folklore combined with the noire of mystery movies. Of course, the animations belong to that era and have remained untouched in its remastered version, so as not to spoil the authors' original tone. Moreover, the variety of environments, always different throughout the journey, grants a style that is always original and never predictable. The conception of the style and the studies that led to its development are noticeable from the minuteness of the details ranging from the backgrounds to the characters' expressions, from their characterization to the interwoven and branching story; all of which led to the creation of this majestic composition.

    THE NINTH NOTE:
The music side perfectly accompanies what was described in the chapter above. The extremely inspired soundtrack goes to perfectly enhance every environment and scene in the game, as well as catalyze the setting of the noir style. Finally, an incredibly noteworthy point is that of the voice acting, which is excellent in its English language but reaches one of its highest peaks ever seen in a video game in its Italian version, which takes advantage of the numerous presence of dialects to give additional characterization to the characters.

    BUT WHY 9?

    PROS:
Grim Fandango is for sure one of those games that once played is hard to forget. The number of positive points is staggering. It is certain that it remains a unique product of its kind but more importantly a game that borders on narrative and illustrative perfection.

    CONS:
The real negative point is added by the remastering of the game, which, while adding a myriad of technical and graphical fixes, goes on to create a variety of bugs that are capable of completely breaking the game. Between those that delete game saves, those that completely lock the player out, and those that create amusing graphical glitches, it is almost impossible not to encounter any of them.
