I have never played this game on a Vita, so I don't know if something about the controls got worse in this remaster. The story is also a little bit disappointing, specially because of the abrupt ending. Expand

Angry Rant Incoming!!! (Do not read if you can't handle criticism)

I just finished Gravity Rush Remastered about 10 minutes ago, and was left in shock over how many features that are straight up missing, or just wasn't included due to corner cuts. For the record; I did not play the vita version. This is just me randomly buying the game on the Playstation Store, playing it all the way through, and then unleashing the frustration in this review over a "Remastered" game that quite frankly should have had more effort put into it. Yes, the Gravity feature is amazing! Yes, exploring an open world is fun to do at first. Yes, the platforming levels are exciting at times. But beyond that slice of pie is a raw hollowed out filling that might as well be taken back for a refund, especially at the $32 canadian pricetag. You can to do the math work to figure out how much money that is in your country if you're not from Canada. Either way, I feel like I was conned, and here's why...

Before I start bashing the game, here are a list of good things about it...

    - Interesting Story
    - Colourful Characters
    - Unique Gravity controls and concept (well maybe not, I haven't played many super hero games to know for sure)
    - The flight camera cooperates with the player reasonably well, and can easily be adjusted to the player's liking in the menu.
    - Multiple costumes to pick from.

Now for the rest, I made a list of all the bad things discovered within my first 5 minutes of playing. Here it is...

    - No English Dubs.
(Did you know that gaming companies have been hiring dub teams since the original playstation era? I'm sick and tired of playing foreign games that don't bother hiring english voice actors. When companies cut corners, it show's that they don't care about their product, and lack of english dubs is a pretty big oversight considering most of the sales, as well as Gravity Rush sales itself, come from america. Look it up. And no, French isn't a madeup language.)
    - Forced Tutorial.
(This is a terrible trend in today's gaming that makes gamers feel like idiots. Tutorials are great, but keep them in a different part of a menu! Do not shove them in a players face. I know how to f***in jump! Let me learn the controls on my own!
    - Rigid walking animations.
(If you can even call "jogging" a walking animation.)
    - No collision sound effects when you bump into people on the street.
    - Bumping into NPCs can bug them, causing them to awkwardly walk on the back of their heels.
    - No direction on how it wants to tell the story. It can't decide if it wants to use legit animations or storybook pages.
    - Hideous motion blur streetlights.
(This "Remastered" version didn't bother to fix up it's awful blur from streetlights... "Remastered" is the keyword.)

All of this found in 5 minutes!!! The open world idea was phrased in this review, but the reality is that Gravity Rush's world is completely barren. Even Grand Theft Auto III, a game that is more than a decade old, has more life & energy in it's civilians than the walking zombies you see in Gravity Rush. Gravity Rush tries to cover up this fact by spawning a lot of "precious gems" for you to collect during your free roaming, which are then used to power up your character. The power ups aren't necessary, just there. And once you tear off this mask, you begin to realize that the exploration in this game is utterly pointless, and you immediately go for the only thing that matters: which is the quests and time trials. This level of disappointment eventually transformed into pure unadulterated anger as I continued to uncover more questionable things that people in the User Score never stopped to think about. Here's the grocery list for all to see. Spoilers will be cut out for obvious reasons, but you can judge the rest...

    - Quest bugs can trigger, leading you in the wrong direction.
    - The Time Trials don't have a restart button. Made a mistake? Guess what! You have to quit the game and sit through 2 loading screens if you wanna try again! "Remastered" my ***!
    - Enemy variety is severely lacking. I can't say any more on the matter.
    - Only one boss battle is done decently, while the rest are....just boring, and predictable!
    - Copy/Pasted NPCs.
    - What's the point in interacting with a transportation vehicle if you can't even get in them!?! It doesn't even show a cutscene of the player riding it! >:(
    - Story quests constantly put you in your default attire, so you have to travel back home if you wanna put on your alternative costume again.
    - Terrible explosion effects.
    - Fetch quest spam!
    - The ending..... Are you serious!?! That's it???
    - Despite what you heard, the story can be completed in only 5 hours... ONLY 5 HOURS!?! The official world record is clocked in under 2 hours... Only 2 f***ing hours!?! Aughhh!!!!

The verdict is a 6 out of 10. I hated playing through this game because of all the missing elements and issues, but it's not a terrible game by all means. It's just wasted potential.

Gravity Rush Remastered is a lot of fun. In terms of overall style, it reminds me a lot of Jet Set Radio and the DBZ games. The controls are "ok" at best. Even after beating the game I still never felt fully in control of Kat. The controls got better as the game went on, but even after 20 hours of gameplay, I would still mess up maneuvers and moves. The game never felt too hard or too easy, which is a good thing. However, this is a highly technical game with a by-design learning curve. For example, if you stop too long to line up a target, you can be quickly overrun by a number of enemies during combat sections. In order to survive, you’ve got to keep flying and thinking on your toes. The graphics are superb, and the music is above average as well. All in all, Gravity Rush Remastered is a good, but not great gaming experience. Expand

The combat is very simple and often does not work as you will plan for it to, but the flying around in gorgeous environments and taking down enemies make it feel more stylish and fun. I am very pleasantly surprised with this game, any fan of fast paced action and/or platform games should give this a try. I'm eager to play the second one. Expand

You get around in Gravity Rush by manipulating gravity. Use this ability to hurl yourself in any direction, hover, and change direction at any time. This gravity manipulation ability feels physically convincing, and not at all like you're just jumping or using a cheat in other games to walk or fly though the air.

The Gravity Rush series are the only games I know of that have a mechanic and control scheme like this, so it will take most people some getting-used-to, and I fully expect a few of you simply won't be able to. Even after completing the game, the controls feel a bit clunky to me, and I'm not sure what else can be done to improve them without impacting the core experience.

Unlike just about every other Japanese game, there's no invisible walls here. So you can go just about anywhere in or around the city, or even fly between cities if you have enough stamina to do so. if you get too far out of bounds, you'll just be teleported back to a safe spot. The only real downside to city exploration is that you can't go inside any of the buildings, so they do feel just a little fake.

The story starts out weird and charming, with your protagonist having lost her memory, being in an outright alien sort of city, and setting up her own new home in the sewer. Being homeless has never been so much fun.

As you progress through the story, things get a little more tame and generic, though every few episodes (20 in total), the game reveals more about its world and backstory. This succeeded in keeping my attention. But unfortunately, by the end, there were plenty of unanswered questions and one of the main things you try to accomplish during the last half of the game doesn't get an adequate resolution. Well, at least there's Gravity Rush 2, which I'll definitely be playing soon.

The game should take no longer than 10 hours to complete, but might take you 20 or 30, depending on how much you like to explore, and I expect that most people will want to explore.

And since I've been playing plot-hole ridden games recently, I'm glad to report that this game has no big plot holes. The story, although relatively simple (though weird and unique), is completely believable. The story has a daily-life sort of vibe to it, but has some underlying mystery and the ongoing threat of the world's generic enemies. The story works well for all ages, and anyone who is willing to learn gravity control should be able to get some enjoyment out of it.

Since this was originally a vita game, I'll comment about the graphic. The non-player character models are obviously vita-like, but your protagonist and some of the main characters are much better. Not PS4-level, but not bad. The cell shaded graphics help hide the lack of polygons. And I noticed no huge issues with the city. Though since buildings are basically rectangles, they're not hard to reproduce.

Don't ask me about the plot because I haven't understand a thing. It takes about 10 hours. To sum up, it's a new experience but it lacks a deep story and understandable one. The moment you and Kat (the main character) awake in this world you know nothing about it, even you clumsily navigate it with your powers, but as the story progress, both you and Kat feel and know how to harness gravity like a fish in the sea, the problem is that both mechanics and narrative aren't on par with the gravity gimmick.

At first, I was fascinated and a little repelled to how the gravity mechanic worked in this game, it does feel kinda natural in a way but in the other, the learning curve felt stiff, I was failing over and over to land in the platforms that the tutorial offered me and more sooner than later I was blaming the "clumsy controls" turns out that as a new mechanic (at least to me) or one that has not explored that much in videogames, it had to be treated as a new skill, so from the moment one to the final moment of the game I was another person, expertly maneuvering through the stage, beating monsters like I was born in the sky, and that to me was one of the peaks of this game, not only Kat but you, learn how to handle gravity more or less at the same pace, and that gives it a lot of immersion to my experience, navigating without the bounds of gravity felt extremily good and it was a sentiment that never got old, at least in my 13-hour playthrough.

    However,

The sentiment of liberty of flying around got buried underneath a lot of things, first of all: the gameplay, it turned out that the developers didn't seem to know how exactly merge the gravity mechanic with combat or things to do, and the combat system feels unpolished but serviceable at its best. Combat is separated in two forms, land combat and air combat, the land combat is simple, you hit the attack button from 1 to 5 times to have a combo, to damage your enemies you have to hit their weak spots (some red orbs, regular enemies are a weak spot on themselves), but when the game starts to throw enemies that have their spots on different places and you have to battle in air is when things get rough. When you're in air you have mostly one attack, an aereal kick, this kick sends Kat like a homming missile, the problem is that the targeting system is non existant and the monsters move in erratic ways that is easy to miss them, so more often than not you'll be flying around the stage trying to kick a low monster and failing again and again, these moments aren't fun at all and they will be gradually get more annoying since more weird enemies will keep appearing.

I liked the whimsical tone of the game, the characters are charming, not that interesting but they grew on you, the story however is pretty generic and dull despite its tight presentation in comic form which I think looks pretty good, it wants to get more serious and interesting towards the final act but for that moment is way too late to care that much, it adds salt to the wound that the lore is presented in the most boring way with some NPC sparce through the city giving info about their lives. Side-quests are non-existant, aside from 3 or 4 that originally were DLC, that feel more like separate stories than a compliment for the main story. Aside from the main quests and limited side quests, the game throws you "challenges" that reward you 'precious crystals', the game's currency for unlocking and enhance skills, this challenges are basically: slide races (you use gravity to slide in the floor like you're skating), time attack arenas and normal races (on which you use all your skills to get from point A to point B as fast as possible), this challenges are repeated through every stage and aren't that ground breaking or fun, the problem is that the main campaign doesn't give you a lot of crystals neither enemies drop them, so more likely you'll be doing this repetitive challenges to enhance your skills, granted the game is not that difficult and I assume you can beat it without enhancing Kat but that's not the point.

As for the art direction the game holds up quite well, this world looks amazing, a little limited but is expected since it wasn't a big team, the aesthetic looks inspired by steam punk and Paris and because of its themes of, thievery, revolution, etc, I think it fits well. I loved also the character design, they look pretty original and every character says you a lot just by its looks. Music wise, the game has a solid soundtrack and it has a lot of personality, it sounds at times jazzy and upbeat at parts, but never dull and always pleasant, I find myself expectantly waiting for the next area's tune to kick in.

I believe that Gravity Rush have a lot of great ideas but in the end it failed to achieve a good balance between them or even truly polish any of them, however as much as it have a lot of issues there's no denial that this game have a lot of potential and at times charm, I hope that it's sequel get things done and gives us a polished taste of what they really wanted this game to be.

One of the earliest side missions involved transporting furniture behind a building. Whilst a tedious task in itself, the bad controls made me give up after a few tries. Not only was I flopping about wildly, but I was also catching on railings, walls and pretty much anything else that made such a simple task a Herculean effort.

The combat also suffers from a similar issue, as one of the best attacks is to gravity rush towards an opponent and kick them, however the accuracy of this move varies wildly.

Having said that, I really look forward to trying the sequel because there is a potentially great game in there waiting to be polished and refined. I love how quirky and comical it can be.
