By far the most impressive and well optimized next gen ps4 release I've played. It hits way above the performance I believed was possible on a base ps4 and lacks no ps5 gameplay. Wow. I have little to no issues or bugs other than not being able to modify assists in splitscreen which Polyphony has ALREADY agreed to fix.

Ok, maybe some trees at the sides of the way don't show an incredible definition, but the cars and the road, WHAT YOU REALLY CARE OF WHEN DRIVING, are amazing. And the best of all, the game just keeps you engaged for ages. I don't play online so I don't know if it has any problems, and I started playing after the car price adjustment, so I haven't noticed any of those problems.

And the best of all, this game is clearly made thinking of the Virtual Reality. I just can't wait to try it with the VR2, because I know that will be an unmatched experience.

Logged a lot of hours on GT3 A Spec with the official steering wheel. As I moved onto the PS3, I got a proper driving l seat along with the PC Logitech G25 Wheel, gear stick and pedal set. On PS4 this combo stopped working as they try pushing users to newer models. That said with the Drive Hub adapter it emulates newer wheels and works just like it did on PS3.

I got GT Sport late in the day due to poor reviews. I got like a year later and eBay, with all the updates thought it was great. I got GT 7 on launch after discounts cost me about £52 not £70. I got the PS4 and paid the £10 upgrade so I can play on both consoles.

GT7 is a great game and a big step up from GT Sport. A much more complete game. As I'm using a wheel I can't really comment on how well it plays with the dual sense. But with a proper wheel, especially a seat it's amazing.

I response to all the crazy feedback in the "news cycle the past week" and users scores of 0. What a massive over reaction.

I never spend real money on micro transactions, I'm cheap and it's kinda cheating anyway. I've amassed ~35 cars so far. Think I'm on menu book 18 or so. I'm enjoying "the grind" learning the game etc, building up to the faster more expensive cars.

So I admit I wasn't affected by the servers being offline for 30 hours. I'd not played for a good few days due to work. But this down time is not on the same league as Cyberpunk being a buggy mess. Or Halo missing half of the normal features.

On patch 1.07/1.08... maybe they were encouraging those that can't wait to spend real money... Maybe they were trying to balance the game? Maybe I'm not the target audience that was affected by the changes.

Some people are upset that they paid £70 for a full game and therefore expect access to all the content day 1.
In my view you get the rare cars for putting the effort in. Who really needs to drive every single car. Looking at my gt7 stats page on the web: Since launch I've logged in 7 days but only had time for 4 proper sessions of just under 2 hours each. I've earned 461,00p credits, driven 439km. I have kids so don't have much time to play / watch them play.

I recently unlocked split screen multiplayer that you mentioned, but I'm playing through the cafe books. I also have access to online, but I'm too cheap to pay for PSN, so only special free weekends for me. I've nearly finished collector level 9. I own 6% of the cars.

I'm on level 22 and completed 34% of the campaign. I've never bought a car and have 1,500,000 credits. I only by cars or tuning if I don't meet entry requirements or can't beat a race. It seems like you earn credits more easily in GT7. For me I'll be playing this game on and off for years.

Some of the graphics continue to surprise me. I played a night to day race the other day, really like how the headlights reflect all over your car interior. When driving I really don't miss the proper ray tracing. The approximated equivalents look pretty damn convincing. I'd much rather have the 60fps, with the cinematic 30fps and ray tracing during menus and replays.

I know mandatory online could be a problem for some. GT Sport for PS4 had the same thing. Luckily for me I have fast broadband so no online issues. If you were online I guess you can play music rally. I understand the requirement to avoid hacking, fake race times etc which would be a bigger concern.

The benefit of online to me is that all my progress is in the cloud and I can switch between consoles and just carry on. I think PSN has a similar feature (Cloud Save), but I don't subscribe to that (no online racing for me)
But the unique thing here is I can switch between PS4 and PS5 and back to PS4 no problem. Handy as my driving seat and rig is generally hooked up to my old PS4, with the PS5 downstairs for the kids.

The single player career in GT7 is excellent. Masses to do, masses to unlock. All the career missions, side missions, license tests and general racing will keep you busy for ages. Only negative side is, the career can only be played online, because the game only saves online. Meaning all career activities are unavailable offline.
Handling of the cars feels pretty realistic, and there are driving assist for those who find it a bit too realistic.
Visuals are mixed lot. Some circuits look brill on PS4Pro, others look like they were ported from Playstation 3..
Framerate stays high at all times.
Sounds are basic, engine sounds lack depth and tire screeching is constant and annoying. Luckily sound levels can be adjusted.
Tuning parts selection is diverse, and tuning options, while not Project Cars 2 level, are still varied enough and all the important settings are there.
Selection of cars is not that big, and many classics are missing. I assume lot of DLC cars will become available later, for a price. Similarly circuits, once you unlock them all, are not that many compared to competing game brands.
Car painting and vinyls are bit cumbersome compared to Forzas. And you have to buy all special paints (metal paints, flakes etc) separately. And not in sets. No, you have to buy each special tone separately, so if you want to buy all metal paints, you have to unlock and buy them separately, pot by pot. Very awkward and silly.
One more complain is AI drivers. They drive on tracks, and do not even pretend to compete against each other. Poorest AI in any modern racer for sure.
To cap; I love the extensive single player career mode. Its the best I have seen in modern traditional racing games (Forza Horizons, while excellent, are more arcade racers, so do not count here). And the handling and tuning is very good too. And that is why I give the game 8/10, despite those faults I numbered. I've long wanted a traditional racer with proper career in single player, and now I got one.

The AI is a disaster, you always start last in a race and the first one is 30 seconds ahead of the others, the ia never goes off road or overtakes, it's really playing against a train.
The gameplay is nice but too rigid. There are cars that don't turn at all. I can assure you that when I turn the wheel of a car at 90° it turns around in 1 second.
The single player mode is useless, except

The two player mode with two big black stripes is a shame.
The third person view is horrible, you can't move it back much, it's almost stuck to the trunk.
The impression of speed when you drive at 250 km/h is ridiculous.

The other half was replaced with bizarre progression systems/gated content, bare-bones AKA 'classic" race options, an unnecessary money grind, zombie AI, rigged loot boxes, and yes--ridiculous microtransactions for in-game cash.

    Racing:
The driving in this game is fantastic, a perfect blend between accessible arcade that can be enjoyed by the whole family, and serious and competitive, while the car handling itself is great, the physics are even greater, with cars snapping realistically when you push them too much, and cars understeering accordingly when your tires can't keep up anymore, however still handsomely rewarding you when you pull off the racing line near perfectly. Pit stops are as great as ever, with the minor kink being the tyre selection screen completely gone after selecting the tyre, so if you misinput you're forced to deal with said new tyre. The AI however are atrocious, they blatantly cheat, barge, rubber-band and do all sorts of heinous and erratic things that just ruin the driving experience. In sport you were doing hot-laps when passing all the AI in turn 1, here you're doing hot laps when you're stuck in second place, one minute ahead of the guy in third and a constant 15 seconds behind first. The penalties are laughably inconsistent, which is ironically consistent with GT's progression as somehow PD just aren't capable of putting together a competent penalty system, but giving them lenience many other racing franchises can't either.
    Campaign:
The gameplay is relatively straight-forward in GT7, You buy a beater-lunchbox, do some races, get to the cafe and play through the challenges. This would be fine if the whole game didn't revolve around you doing these challenges, and the rewards were different. The game completely ruins any sort of progression as it's giving out supercars and rare icon sportscars as if it was candy. Because of this, everyone has the same exact uneventful path, and you see people driving the exact same cars. This is a tremendous downgrade from the likes of GT4, and ironically even Sport, where you had quite a few possibilities when trying to progress, but instead GT7 locks you down one singular path as you need to progress in the cafe to even unlock the license tests. This makes the campaign feel extremely closed, and strict, with any sort of freedom shot down. Easily the least rewarding campaign of all Gran Turismo games so far.
    Gameplay:
Along with the excellent driving, the gameplay is one of the few saving graces of the game. From the extensive care you can provide for your cars in GT Auto, from washing and oil changing, to installing the biggest and widest body kit you can find, the immersion never stops! The tuning also provides a great way to transform your every-day beater car to a circuit pocket-rocket. The variety doesn't stop!
The game also offers missions, scapes, and the showcase room, there is a great deal of things to do to pass the time. Missions, are a set of challenges you must do, either reaching a certain speed on a straight, setting a hot-lap with limited fuel, or overtaking a set of cars, the game excels here in terms of content. Getting gold and bronze medals on this event also gives you two free cars, which is actually well earnt as these challenges are quiet difficult. Showcase is the discover tab from Sport. You can find photos, scapes, liveries and decals from other players, had lots of fun browsing through there. Scapes make a return as well, though they don't improve much on the existing formula so there isn't much to say about them. The livery editor returns with a bang, as GT7 now allows you to search for decals while editing, and actually allows you to edit other people's liveries, which is a fantastic addition. The game also brings back the used car dealership, but this is less great, as it takes weeks for it to fully refresh, unlike in previous titles where it refreshed on a regular basis, depending on what you were doing. The legendary dealership is a new addition, but the same in principle, except with fancier cars and higher price tags.
    Misc:
Graphics - Even on PS4, the game is breathtaking, with realistic rays of sunlight sneaking through objects, the colours, everything is just full of life.
Online - massive downgrade, with championships and sport mode just being a empty tack-on, 2p split screen is bugged and online lobbies are a severe downgrade from GT Sport, which is worrying, to say the least.
Menus - the main home menu is pretty unappealing visually, a massive downgrade from the previously shown off menu. Loading times could be better, with 5s and 10 at that could easily be shaved off with more optimisation. The menus are pretty tedious as well, full of life but a pain to deal with.
Presentation - Great presentation retaining the charm of older GT titles, with it's great original soundtrack and themes.
Overall this game is definitely worth a buy if you have cash to spare, but if you're looking for a more solid experience you might want to head back to Gran Turismo 6 or wait for a big discount later on.

The game has a sluggish, annoying and boring progression system with annoying NPCs in the form of a photo and some text to deal with. It just feels soulless in that regard. The car selection is very disappointing. The slowness of unlocking stages inevitably causes you to play the same stage over and over again, just to make a small amount of progress to unlock one more course. The negatives of this game heavily outweigh the positives, therefore, I conclude that this game is pretty mediocre.. Expand

You can use real money to buy cars. Not a huge deal to me, I am fine with grinding if I really want a car. The real issue is that the online races allow for modified cars that you can upgrade them with better parts. So if someone with just OK skills want to throw money at a car they will have a better car. Makes the online races pay to win.

I should be able to sell my cars, and I should not have to see races see a decline in credit rewards through patches. It's a shame that one of my favorite franchises of all time has been brought to its knees by this silly always-online requirement and poor business decisions. Gran Turismo 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, it helped inspire my love of cars at a young age. That game is still playable today, will GT7 be playable in 20 years? Probably not.

Underneath it all, yes, the game itself is good. The driving physics are awesome!!!
I'm just concerned that Sony is going to throw away their legacy when these titles inevitably go offline, GT7 will likely, at some stage, be unplayable forever. PlayStation, this is the WRONG DIRECTION for your company and brand, it is shameful!

I feel like the industry has just absolutely abandoned what I love about games in favor of catering to whales for an extra buck. Fallout 76, (my last time posting to Metacritic) was a complete joke and unfortunately, GT7 is right alongside it in its current state. Both of my favorite franchises now have a huge stain on their legacy and history. It's just a sad time to be a gamer.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Great game marred by disgusting greed. In addition to the price of the game, the emphasis is of collecting cars, yet the in race rewards are pitiful. This has been made worse by the latest update cutting the rewards to 'not worth entering' races.

Coupled to that is the absolute joke of the FIXED roulette reward system that 9 tomes out of ten will give you the very basest coin reward.

There are clearly predatory microtransactions in the psn store and the in game earnings have been cut to push you to spending real world money to progress in the game. Purchasing and tuning a car in GT7 is horrendously expensive. I have been doing a race over and over to earn 60,000 credits a time because I refuse to spend any more money on this game, 60,000 goes nowhere. You may need 350,000 to properly tune a car. This 60,000 has now been cut to 10,000. I'm not stupid and I refuse to pay real world money for credits in an online only game.

I never thought I would see polyphony digital align itself with the behaviour and business models of EA and Bethesda.

Sometimes good, sometimes bad, but it always was an another car for your collection. Here you can win cash, tuning part or a car. But mind you, after many rolls I had maybe one medium cash reward. That's it, all of them were small amounts, even smaller than for winning a simple race. I said that tuning is nice, yes, but not it's a bit expensive. So please, all you have to do, is implement GT Sport economy into this game. I never complained about lack of credits in their previous game, but still it was a challenge to collect enough to buy some legendary car.

    -Good selection of tracks.
-Any car paint can be bought although preview car is not your current car.
-Scapes is a very good camera feature.
-Custom races are very customizable but the payout is super terible.

    The Middle:
-Engine swaps are a new addition to the series but are locked behind the terrible roulette system.
-Visual parts are back but there not much different from Gran Turismo 6's.
-The instrumental music is very good while the vocal music is bad, so it's just a weird clash of old music with new music.
-A lot of new tuning options but a good chunk of cars cannot be upgraded with a turbo.
-Lacking a lot of races when compared to GT Sport and older GT titles.
    -Music rally is fine
-GT Cafe is a very good addition but it's pretty short and the speech bubbles get annoying after a while.

    The Cons:
-Used dealership updates 1-3 cars whenever it wants.
-Terrible roulette system that gives out barebone prizes and locks away sought after parts behind it.
-Race payouts were lowered in a update while car prices remained the same.
-99% of the game is online only
-Mircotransactions are a lot worse than GT Sport's and Gran Turismo 6's.
    -Barely any new recent cars.
-Legend Dealership has too many highly priced cars that shouldn't be even that high in a racing game.
-Cars in your garage cannot be sold, only discarded.

Especially if you don't communicate when a 2 hour server maintenance is sitting at 20 hours offline so far. Add to that a structure that really starves payouts in mid-late game, limited time car sales and screens that perpetually push expensive micro-transactions and suddenly the really poor, dated AI seems the least of your problems!

Is it fun? When it works, sure. And it looks amazing on PS5, runs like a dream. While I spent 20+ hours playing on a friend's PS5 before deciding to get it on my PS4. Unfortunately for me, bugs had been introduced into the licences regarding dirt tires. I always felt the dirt (and drift) aspects of the game shouldn't be forced on the general populace of Gran Turismo. It should be entirely optional, as should things like an unstoppable 10 minute or longer video clip when first loading the game or a forced music rally where the HUD and lack of engine noise make manual shifting frustrating. But these are the odd design decisions that can immediately hamper the experience in a game that does the GT aspect rather well. Except for its AI.
Any time progression involves repeating quests to go from last to first repeatedly cannot really be considered a real simulator to begin with, and add funky changed physics at lower speeds alongside physics that feels like it's different track to track, and you start to see that it's more a progressional arcade game with some simulation than anything else.
Good for the dopamine hits and challenging to be sure, only the later game is now focused on microtransactions; pay to collect. And it's not subtle, every opportunity to spendearned credits has an opportunity to purchase at the cash sstore. Highly desirable cars have that FOMO feeling as they're time limited and may also have limited stock across the globe. And then there's the nail in the coffin; server maintenance. In particular the one occurring as I write. Originally supposed to be 2 hours. 2 hours in, revised to 3 hours. Included update 1.07. The servers are still down 21 hours on. With no updates from PD or Sony.
For a largely single player game this is an insane, absurd issue caused by the forced online connectivity required for any progression and any gaming mode other than the poorly received Music Rally and Arcade modes, both modes probably not really being what a Gran Turismo 7 player is after and definitely not what I'd want to play.
Suddenly the game feels like it is designed with only cash microtransactions in mind, and the payout revamp apparently occurring in 1.07 seems that it may be to reduce people's opportunity to earn in-game currency; for that, we'll have to see. If the game even goes live again, or when it goes live again. Perhaps these issues will be addressed today or soon, but this recent experience reminded me of why I should simply stick to PC for racing sims. And it makes me hesitant to ever purchase another Playstation or GT game ever again.

Greed is the worst part of human beings. Don’t support this game and is creators. Tell them to go f__k themselves and their micro transactions. Expand

Basically trying to force people to buy credits through their microtransactions by making it harder to earn them in-game. Can't sell cars in the game anymore either. I've completely stopped playing the game as it's not worth my time anymore. It has become laborious to play and I don't find it enjoying at all. I'd get a refund if I could. $70 down the drain and will likely be the last GT game I buy.

Also. requires you to be online to play for single player.

So disappointed. The gameplay and graphics are fine, but everything else has gone backward. I don't think it's going to have the fun replay value like the previous versions had.

And based on the new valuations, I don't think I'll ever get my new Skyline.

Without doubt the WORST Gran Turismo made.

Oh it looks good but take the slightest dip below the surface and you find a lazy pile of garbage. To start with, the start, Music Rally, which you MUST play, no "oh I'll come back to it later", you don't at least try the first Music Rally you don't get into the game. Then there's the fact it's locked behind a "must be online" to play

To start with, the start, Music Rally, which you MUST play, no "oh I'll come back to it later", you don't at least try the first Music Rally you don't get into the game.

Then there's the fact it's locked behind a "must be online" to play even single player mode DRM lock. Why is this even necessary? I'm playing single player mode, maybe once a month to check for necessary updates, but EVERY time, are you for real???

The actual content, pathetic, the missions, the licenses, they're still there, with their usual flaws that I'll come back to, but the racing, if you just want great deep racing, don't waste your money, GT5 and 6 have more racing then this does.

Going back to those flaws. You remember I'm sure, earlier iterations of Gran Turismo, where you'd do a mission or license, and you'd fail it as you overtook another car safely then IT would hit you but YOU were failed for the collision even though it wasn't your fault, yep, it's still there, or you start a challenge with your ghost on, yet despite just driving in a straight line, in the same car, with the EXACT same settings, somehow it gets a better start, yep, again, still there. These are basic things that should be long gone by now, but nope.

Pitting, how is it, you pit, the nearest car is maybe 10 seconds behind you, both change tyres, both fully refuel, yet somehow, the other car gets in FIRST, and gets out first?

Microtransactions, yep they're in this now. Got to get the grift on.

Then there's the rigged prize "roulette", and yes it IS rigged, I tested it. Roulette is supposed to be a game of chance or luck, there's absolutely no chance or luck involved in this roulette. There is a technique to repeat the roulette spin if you don't like the prize, it's not healthy for the PS, but I had an older model and a newer one so I took the chance, if you pull the power lead fractionally after you get the prize, it doesn't save so you get to re-run the roulette. I put this to the test 20 times. 5 prizes, 20 spins, now for the record, during the re-spins some of the higher prizes changed, however, EVERY spin I got the exact same prize, the EXACT same prize, the odds of that are in the millions to 1, yet everytime, exact same outcome!

There's also another aspect to this rigged roulette, to buy some cars, they're locked and you need "invitations" to buy them, to get the invitations you must..... win them in the rigged roulette!

This game just feels like one of the old prelude Gran Turismo's rather then a full game. I've played EVERY GT since the original came out, and I've never been disappointed, until now, this, it just feels like a cash cow milking the GT name.

It feels like a huge emphasis has been put on online racing at the expense of the main game, but online has been a part of GT since even GT5, which, at least in my opinion is still by far the best, and if the servers were still running, I'd rather play that, then this pile of steaming garbage.

Absolutely not worth the money, just a pure waste of your hard earned. This game is a disgusting entry to a distinguished franchise.

I've only ever received three invitations to purchase a rare car and every single invitation has been for the exact same Porsche, despite there being plenty other cars that need an invitation to purchase.

Like many others, my biggest beef with the game are the ridiculous non-random roulette tickets, micro transactions, overly expensive cars, and hiding fun game features like rare cars, engine swaps, etc. behind the broken roulette system.

The developer greed is hard not to notice with this game. Even though it's fun to play, I can't give it any better of a score due to the blatant disrespect shown to us players.

GT7's single player content pales in comparison to previous titles, essentially feeling like a long-winded tutorial. Many other elements feel similarly underwhelming and underdeveloped.

The developers also clearly push players towards microtransaction purchases, going as far as utilizing alarming FOMO tactics, rather than rewarding us as we advance through our racing careers.

This game is simply not what was expected, or even advertised. The dearth of single-player content, combined with a restricting and unfulfilling progression system, makes this game legitimately hard to return to, which for a title containing as much history as this one, hurts a great deal.

One last thing I want to mention is the baffling fact that 99% of the game's content, meaning all story-related modes and earnings, are tied to online connectivity. Servers go down? You're SOL... which has currently been the case for the last *20 hours (!!!!!)* since writing this review. Simply unacceptable.

The problem wtih the servers down for more than 24h, shows the nonsense of the game being always online, to play!
Worse, Polyphopny is doing all they can, to force players buying credits on PS Store!
The new one after update 1.07 is reducing the race wining prize!!
I am dropping the game, and considering very seriously, buying Xbox X instead PS5!!

WE STAND AGAINST YOUR PREDATORY MICROTRANSACTIONS !

FIX THIS GAME PROBLEMS OR GT7 WILL DIE SONY !

1- Few brand new cars to the series and tracks compared to GT Sport, we need more like: Porsche 918, Jag XJ220, EB110 SS, Mclaren P1, 720S, SF90 Stradale, 812 Superfast, Koenigsegg Agera, Chiron SS, Venon F5, Saleen S7 TT, Maserati MC12, Porsche 959, Cizeta V16T, Ruf CTR2, New V8 Vantage, New M3, New RS4 Avant, New C63 AMG Sedan, etc...

2- Ai "Sophy" system it's totally Hardcore and unbalanced on the Gr.Series campaing events, they must turn down the Ai difficulty level -25% at least

3- Making in game cash (credits) it´s a true grind, we need more cash gains and rewards to make the cars more obtainable as well the performance mods (without PAYING REAL EXTRA MONEY)

4- Make us able to sell our cars again like in every other GT game

5- Performance mods are too weak to the point that feels unrealistic, i know some cars in game that can produce with the same mods a lot more power in real life, like the classic VW Beetle, in real life i know there is shops that can make it with +300hps tuned to the max with a big turbo, but in game it´s about 100hps tuned to the max even turbocharged, we need a lot more HPs on this performance mods for all cars

6- Make it 100% playable offline and stop forcing PP to get the PS Plus !

    > Still things they can fix over time, otherwise it's a good game, looks great and physics are more realistic than previous GT games but sometimes it´s too hard to control the car, if you are coming from GT Sport i will recomend waiting some months for future discounts, more content and fixes ! !

GT7 doesn’t feel like a truly new game – more like an upgraded version of Sports. But it’s par for the course for the series: each generation, Polyphony Digital makes a solid foundation and then builds upon it. [Issue#260, p.38]

Gran Turismo 7 strikes the perfect balance between accessibility and realism in a way that caters to casual players and veterans. It's a gorgeous racing game with a surprisingly addictive gameplay loop thanks to the new Café and Menu Books systems. While some modes are certainly not as strong as others, Gran Turismo 7 checks almost all the boxes of what a driving simulator should be.
