    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. One objective great part of the game, it's visual presentation is incredible. Everything else is just flipping the bird at what made GOW such a popular series in the first place.

    I feel like every good review is from people who didn't like the series before and now that its been filtered and altered to more "serious" and "mature" and "boring" it fits what mainstream audiences want from games now.

    What really bugs me about the story and gameplay is how the narrative between Kratos and Atreus is so apologetic about Kratos's actions in the previous games. Like he was the bad guy and *now* he's the good guy teaching his son better. And gameplay wise they removed all the "video games" elements so everything is more stifled and restrictive so it feels more in line with AAA games now.

    It just incredibly undermines every aspect of GOW. The games, all the emotional beats of the story from the last series, etc. It's like it was written and made by people who only heard about the GOW games rather than actually experienced them.

    Speaking about narrative, how it handles Kratos's past like he was some evil villian back in the day. He was extremely justified in his hatred and revenge against those gods for everything they did to him. They were conniving and manipulative **** who deserved to be wrecked by Kratos. It was only by GOW 3 where it went too far and he destroyed the world (and that was after he was betrayed by his supposed allies, there is literally no one Kratos can trust in the world).

    But for 3-4 games prior (if you include the cannn psp titles) the Greek gods thoroughly **** with him the whole time. He was a monster they made, not something Kratos is inherintly. No one even bothers to treat him like a person except Athena, even knowing how powerful he is.

    And this is not something just brought up in this game. A number of the games directly explore why Kratos became so violent, but it's even shown in GOW 1 that at worst before Aries uses him he's no different than any other Spartan warrior and that Aries started the decent.

    He even tried for a decade iirc to do it by the book and follow the god's lead just for them to pull the rug and use a technicality to not grant him peace from his nightmares. The guy tried. He was even tries to kill himself and the gods won't let him.

    The gods: tricked him into killing his own wife and child, lied to him constantly to use him as their hit man, sent his brother to hell for eternity, tried to kill him on multiple occasions, attempted to genocide his people, etc.

    And every time he tried to deal justice he has to deal with the **** of all the people defending the evil gods. I mean wouldn't you be pissed? Not even that often Kratos attempts to talk before attacking when faced with a new obstacle and they always basically tell him to **** off even knowing who he is.

    The only justification to him being an **** is how he treats regular people in the series as cannon fodder, but that I'll admit is probably a consequence of "edginess" they were going for but is rarely ever in canonical cutscenes. The reason this game turned me off outside the gorgeous presentation is that it feels like it was made by people who didn't like the original games and considered them to be low art. There are connections but it feels so pretensious that this slower paced over the shoulder bearded dad game is the more respectable game.    … Expand

It has an unoriginal, uninteresting, boring story that doesn't get you dragged into the world, instead it pushes you away from the game from how bland it is.     If you're a real fan of the original games, then this is the biggest insult you could get. From the art direction, to the gameplay, to even the way the developer talks about their old fans and their old games.

    Even as a game in its own merit, it would only stand as high as a 6/10.     A terribly repetitive game that lacks new ideas and concepts. Everything in this game has been done before, which is utterly disappointing. And the continuous repetition of activities is as foreseeable as it is insultingly easy. Fight, riddle, repeat. Until you can't just take it anymore and switch it off forever, wishing you had never spent any money on this.

    Go there and fight the same boss, and then go here fight the same boss with the same type but with different skin, there's no variety in this game, and the side quest is so fcking boring. The Witcher 3 is wayyyyyyyy better.

    One of the worst games I have ever played. A **** disgrace to anyone who enjoyed the previous instalments of God Of War. Kratos turned in to a pathetic loser, one of the worst character assassinations I have ever seen. The gameplay is a futile rip off of dark souls and whatever else they attempted to copy. This isn't God Of War.

    This is probably the least fun and most boring game I've played in a while. Combat is boring and repetitive, story is also uninteresting, Kratos is such an unfun character and boy is just annoying. Nothing is good about this game other than the visuals. An insult to the god of war series. It's just a copy of Last of Us, Uncharted and a bit of Dark Souls in the combat.

    The core combat mechanics of throwing your weapons around is spectacular and satisfying. The aesthetics are cutting-edge, the audio is epic and enthralling with war-like Nordic themes, and the plot is stupendous. Every character is great and appealing with tons of personality, depth, and complex reasoning. If I were focusing on these aspects alone, the game would have a perfect 10/10. However, I cannot help but cut this elaboration on the good aspects short, as the bad aspects kept echoing in my mind at a much greater volume throughout the entire experience.    … Expand

    Bad. Throws out everything that made the God of War series what it was into some father and son sop story. Kratos has never been weaker or more emasculated than in the Playstation 4 release of God of War.

    It manages to both please the propaganda media with it's agenda to replace every gaming aspect with    God of War 4 is luckiest game to ever exist in the gaming history.
    Back in 2017 and up until now, games nowadays are released half finished, buggy and filled with micro-transactions BS and other untraditional business models that don't reward gamers that want to be good at the game.

    It manages to both please the propaganda media with it's agenda to replace every gaming aspect with movie-sob scenes with minimal gameplay & gameplay difficulty as possible
    And the majority of the gamers who since then have long dropped any standard expectations of a video game to have.

    - It provides the wanna be TLOU1 story with the son-father relationship, only with barely any sense of story direction
    - It provides a new combat that is different from the original, yet it's barely polished and tested, so they added in the LVL system bullsh-i-t to let players grind their way to the finish line
    - Provides more than 6 hours of play by having dull side missions that only serve to damage even more the directionless plot
    - Graphics look nice, but 60FPS be damned, let's stick to 30FPS. Don't worry if you're a PC player. Sony really isn't trying to save it's dying console brand anyway

    Besides that, the game lacks in obvious areas where's the old GoW games didn't:

    - Enemy variety
    - Boss variety
    - A **** JUMP button

    It's no surprise why Shuhei Yoshida "was horrified" when he 1st saw the game.
    It didn't live up to the GoW standards, and with Cory's fascination for writing "a script" and not a "game script", it's no wonder why video games strayed away from their core purpose. I.E. ..... TO DELIVER A FUN GAME TO PLAY

    So how come, with all these level of mediocre mechanics, did the gaming community still endorse this?
    For the the simple reason that GoW4 is a video-game product that is sold in the traditional way that doesn't asks more money from the player.

    - It's finished
    - Tested (alteast to the level it's serviceable)
    - Offers more than enough content to justify its price
    - And as I said before, you buy it, you get it. There's no catch. It's atleast honest.

    Personalmente no me hizo sentir esa emocion de los God of War pasados, a mi forma de ver fue un error esta nueva reinvencion del juego ya que no me gusta que lo hayan querido hacer un poco mas hacia lo realista y la camara no me gustó para nada.

Буквально пару часов назад добрался до боя с братьями, и после победы, не знаю как себя заставить играть дальше… Больше всего я не люблю условности в играх. И эта игра эта игра просто выводит на новый уровень УСЛОВНОСТИ. Множество ситуаций вСтоит заметить что я недавно таки приобрел возможность приобщиться к экзам sony. Я возлагал огромные надежды на этот облизанный всеми «шедевр». Буквально пару часов назад добрался до боя с братьями, и после победы, не знаю как себя заставить играть дальше… Больше всего я не люблю условности в играх. И эта игра эта игра просто выводит на новый уровень УСЛОВНОСТИ. Множество ситуаций в которых, в метре от героя находится кнопка/ключ открывающая путь дальше. Рукой потянуться немного надо… Фигушки. Иди ищи кристал, принеси кристал, выстрели, отправь сына… В один момент мне показывают какой Кратос божественно сильный, в другом он не может чутка подбросить паренька. Местный паркур, после ассасинов, дно днищенское. Надо перепрыгнуть между уступами? Нельзя просто сдвинуть стик в нужную сторону и нажать прыжок. Надо навести камеру в нужную точку, чтобы появилась кнопка прыжка. Боевка - мне не нужно 70% навыков. Достаточно всего пары комбинаций. При всей бедности навыков… По сути все сводится к комбе р1р1р1р2, зажатому р2 и броскам топора, плюс еще пары навыков, остальное юзаю скорее по приколу, нежели чем для какой-то пользы. Люди создавшие местные лифты, с которых нельзя спрыгнуть пока они не додедут, заслуживают отдельный котел. По итогам, мне понравились эффекты, дизайн мира и графика. Где тут шедевр я не понял… Это не шедевр, и даже не просто отличная игра. Это середнячок с плохими решениями, в очень красивой оболочке. Я очень разочарован. И я не жду продолжение.… Expand

    An other overrated game, i feel the gameplay like an old "Beat em up" game, just spend the entire game just pushing the square button . The characters and dub were pretty good . But gameplay is cringe as hell .

On the ps3 God of War 1-3 were available, and despite some issues with the controls they were competing games. God of War 2018 looks nice, but that is were the issues start. There is no backstory it just, God of War and boy, and that is it. And there are no combos at least to start. Then the first boss fight is against a giant were you are supposed to use boy to shoot his arrows to stun the enemy and guess what, the arrows basically do nothing and the giant can take you down in 2-3 hits. Ok beat the giant the you get the next boss fight The Stranger, who you never know who he is or what he wants you just end up in a protracted fight. When you fight the stranger he will charge at you which forces you to use your shield and you miss and chance to counter. On a rare occasion you can finally attack the stranger and start to do damage guess what happens, suddenly right in the middle of you attack combo the stranger will counter your attacks stopping you combo. But you can't counterattack the stranger when he attacks you. Only played the first trophy but was unimpressed, not sure if I will play more.… Expand

    Bossfights are like 70% cutscenes. And somehow the game is way too difficult. Even    I wanted to kill monsters left and right, revenge gods, kinda like in previous god of war games. But instead I got to watch cutscenes and listen to some bullcrap father-son drama. Somehow, they turned the protagonist into the scared old fart who hides in the woods and runs away when he gets found out.
    Bossfights are like 70% cutscenes. And somehow the game is way too difficult. Even medium settings make it feel like darksouls. You cannot defeat even the 1st boss unless you learn all the mechanics and die a few times. I bet one could beat the game in like 8 hours if they made the difficulty more reasonable.
    And all the crappy rpg mechanics are there. Get ready to collect money, spend skillpoints, customize visuals... I really wish they would focus on gameplay, not on secondary features.    … Expand

    наблюдать на лысую башку на пол экрана с туевой хучей стрелок по краям экрана, поварачивать камеру из одного угла в другой, как будто ты в башне танка сидишь, что бы бить 2мя конпками бомжа, который на протяжении всей игры меняется только цветом, застрявший в стене, получать урон не понятно от кого, когда и почему, умирать и начинать заново по 10 раз, что бы просто пройти до лазанья понаблюдать на лысую башку на пол экрана с туевой хучей стрелок по краям экрана, поварачивать камеру из одного угла в другой, как будто ты в башне танка сидишь, что бы бить 2мя конпками бомжа, который на протяжении всей игры меняется только цветом, застрявший в стене, получать урон не понятно от кого, когда и почему, умирать и начинать заново по 10 раз, что бы просто пройти до лазанья по скале с нажатием 1й кнопки что бы подпрыгнуть и в тонкой, буквально удушающей кишкой - уровнем, в поисках сундуков с абсолютно бесполезными камнями для абсолютно бесполезной брони, которой насрано так, что бы ты сидел в меню пол часа и больше, и попутно слушая бессконечный пиздежь каждые 3 секунды ублюдошного раздражающего и бесполезного как по сюжету так и по геймплею пиздюка под супер мега ультра "чувственной" эпический пердеж старой переделанной темы сидя афк по 10 минут смотря оооооочень технологические но идиотские катсцены из которых большая часть игры состоит, но зато с офигенным графонием. Если Вы пенсионер или инвалид, то эта игра для вас - сидите, нажимайте одну кнопку, смотрите оооооооооочень "душу разрывабщий" сюжет, слушайте диалоги (молчание под музычку с кучей качественных анимаций) между какими-то персонажами никак не относящимися ни к Кратосу, ни к Вам самим (о чем в этой же игре сам Кратос и говорит не один раз) но продолжает в этом говне варится, что бы в конечном итоге... что? что бы ждать следующую часть с вменяемым геймплеем, разнообразием персонажей, мобов и локаций, хоть как-то интересных головоломок, хоть каким-то наличием платформинга, и в конце концов игры в которую ты играешь, а не спишь под кинцо нажимая пару кнопок пару раз в несколько часов.     It's nice. The sequence shot is good, but are we in a movie? This direction that these games are taking is starting to worry me. When you spend more time creating cinematic scenes, directing the actors to stage the actions, it's less time tweaking the gameplay. I played it like I was watching a mythology movie. I am unable to list 3 gameplay mechanics after finishing it.

    At first I enjoyed it but it became way too repetitive and boring,I even couldn't play it till the end. Miles from GoW1 and 2, which were far more impressive. This game just combines things from other Action/Open World games and puts hardly anything new to it except cool cinematics.

    It’s a shame that this is the standard for today’s triple A. It’s the same game as many others but with fancy graphics and mediocre gameplay and engagement. It’s unfair and misleading for people who wants a challenge and gameplay mechanics that doesn’t feel as an excuse to stick together different cutscenes.     I'm new to the franchise... but, this ain't a favorite. nice story, fun combat... for the most part, a few nice armor sets, fun characters... minus Kratos, good humor, deep emotions... but nowhere near a masterpiece. so many situational strategic runic attacks which are rendered useless by the fact that you can't switch them mid-fight. traps are so half-assedly done that they kill youI'm new to the franchise... but, this ain't a favorite. nice story, fun combat... for the most part, a few nice armor sets, fun characters... minus Kratos, good humor, deep emotions... but nowhere near a masterpiece. so many situational strategic runic attacks which are rendered useless by the fact that you can't switch them mid-fight. traps are so half-assedly done that they kill you when they shouldn't--like the crushing walls that kill you if you're just touching them like the one in Ivaldi's workshop where the chest is but has no opposing wall. only a few nice sets out of the bunch with NG+ dwindling that already small number down to 2 with one being only a reskin of The Travel's set (Falling Ash) Tyr's was at lest left alone... could've been improved but I lack any faith in your team's ability to do so . the few annoying puzzles on a few chests-challenge is fine but some are just annoying. the multiple targeting system an annoying joke--most games let you select multiple targets to hit. the inability to switch perks around was also annoying as some gear that may look good.... but, had lousy perks.( Aris's and Zeus's, specifically). irrelevant healing bonuses to some of the gear to be too slow to be viable. the Valkyrie Queen felt like a feminist designed the fight mechcanics. though, it was nice to be able to switch all enhancement around at once--most convenient. I'm aware that there's 3 more passed games but to me, this felt like their first attempt at making a game I'm not known for leaving reviews unless the game is bad... though, this is the better game on a short list. I hope Ragnorok is better.… Expand

Went from a fun hacknslash with an engaging story to this boring rpg wannabe with a boring and forgettable story that takes itself way to serious (a common PlayStation trend) with a **** combat system

    This an average game at best you fight the same boss like 15 times 2 different ones repeated the valks&trolls. Graphics look good but the gameplay is very repetitive cant skip past foes even if your back tracking to an old area which you do alot of, theres only like 4 real boss fights the rpg mechanics are basically useless cause no matter how much you upgrade your gear it wont get better

    Тупые головоломки, до которых легко додуматься. Нет, я не прошу какие-то "Ультра-супер-пупер сложные", но хотя бы не повторяющиеся раз за разом.
    Нельзя и не отметить плюсы:
    Сюжет достаточно интересный, если вырезать из него тупые сюжетные повороты. За ним интересно наблюдать, а концовка даёт задуматься, что же будет в следующей части.
    График-шикарная, очень красивая.
    Вообще 4/10, от игры ожидал большего. Может на это всё повлияло завышенное ожидание.    … Expand

    I really don’t get the hype?! I just got it on ps plus for free and the game is beyond annoying! I rather watch god of war “the movie” . Kratos can’t jump neither can he climb? Are you kidding me?! The combat system is very confusing and lame . Also your “son” is very annoying he won’t be quiet.The old god of war games are definitely better.

    the only good thing is Graphic.
    Gameplay is weaker than previous games.it dosent give you than intensity.
    Music is just Average.
    Story is very regular and simple.
    I think they tried to use t.l.o.u formula but it did not pay.

    Gráficos incríveis mas com uma história que mais parece um lençol de retalhos da mitologia e apesar de um enredo empolgante em termos de ação após algum tempo a mesma dinâmica de matar/pilhar/destruir torna o jogo repetitivo e com puzzles pouco desafiantes.
