The environments in God of War Ragnarök are incredibly detailed and realistic, from the lush forests of Alfheim to the snow-capped mountains of Jotunheim. The character models are also brought to life with stunning animation, and the facial expressions are particularly expressive.

The gameplay in God of War Ragnarök is a refinement of the formula established in the 2018 game. The combat is more fluid and responsive, and the puzzles are more challenging. There are also new features, such as the ability to summon the Hugin and Munin ravens to scout ahead, which add to the gameplay variety.

The story in God of War Ragnarök is epic and emotional. It builds on the events of the previous game and delivers a satisfying conclusion to Kratos and Atreus's journey. The characters are well-developed and relatable, and the voice acting is top-notch.

One of the best games I've played.
The story was amazing and the characters were great and the gameplay was fun and immersive sometimes combat was difficult and sometimes it was easy it really depends on the difficulty the enemy and your skill.

After beating the 2018 game, my expectations were ok. I knew it would be a good game, but not this good. There are so many elements that make the game way superior to its predecessor. First, and more important in this new direction... the story. Unlike the first one, where the plot seems to be moveless, where things happen. The development of the characters is much clear and well-made. There were some moments I just couldn't hold myself 'cause they mattered to me. The relationship of Kratos with his son is no longer lonely. He grows with the world beyond and so do we. That moments really can make grown men have a "speck in the eye". The plot itself is amazing. Of course, given its dimensions, it has some holes, but at least for me, "suspension of disbelief" was enough to ignore it, since the messages were more important - and there are many. As we know what Kratos went through, his words mean a lot. The cinematics were also amazing. Truly a cinematography peace.

Alright, about the gameplay, one of my biggest criticisms about the 2018 game... it got better. It still has its problems, since its limits perspective and movement, but the RPG just works way better here. The enemies were diverse and required different approaches. The skill tree was still kinda boring, the weapons skill itself was crazy. The side quests were way essential now, and if I didn't have to return the PS4, I could do it.

Also, an honorable mention: props to the PS4 Slim for how grateful it deals with this game. Truly impressive (and I played the 2018 game in 4K).

Anyway, I loved and thank god it was worth my time.

Прошел God of War: Ragnarök, вот хочу оставить своё мнение на Metacritic.

The Story is excellently paced but lacks some detail and explanation about specific events (It left some Plot holes), the Combat and gameplay are reminiscent of GOW 2018 with more combat flow and tactical combat mechanics.

The Characters are well-written, and the Environments and realms are expansive and impressive graphically while maintaining the linear open space the previous game is known for.

The Music is incredibly satisfying which reminds me of Huge, Epic and Cinematic Soundtracks that Films are known for. This game makes the first game look like a DLC and that is a good thing but I feel there is a lack of something that I can't really point my finger towards but it has to do with the later parts of the game.

I feel that it's generic and safe, it doesn't try to do something ultimately Unique like the previous games in the series. It's understandable where they want to go with the franchise and the characters but I expected there to be something more, something unexpected at the end, but as I mentioned before the story of the game plays it safe.

    On to ratings:
    Story 9/10
    Gameplay 8/10
    Visuals 9/10
    Music 10/10
    Polish and Quality 9/10

I was going to give this game 10/10 but there are minor flaws in the game that hinder the experience, in my opinion, don't get me wrong I enjoyed this game very much but I think it is safer to say that this is a 9/10 it's close to being perfect, but it misses some elements that the previous titles had that made it have a lasting personality.

At the writing of this review, I thought of this being an 8/10 or even a 7 but I have to consider that this is not its own game with its own personality this is a continuation of the story of 2018 and is frankly a difficult game to rate, so I had to consider the previous title as a base.

2018 is an 8/10 for me, this game is better in almost all respects so hence a 9/10.
I highly recommend playing GOW 3, 2018 and then Ragnarok.

As for when you should buy it, either now or when it goes on a quick sale even if it's $2 or $5 off it's worth it. As for Performance it locked to 1080p 30fps, with no visible drops in fps whatsoever, there are some texture loading problems you'll notice when playing the first hours of the game and some character models pop in before combat but these are quickly solved, I experienced no crashes and only one time where the game needed to load for 2 seconds. Other than that the game is well-optimized.

I didn't expect Ragnarok with its sheer size to run well on my standard 9+ years old PS4 it really shows how much care was taken by Santa Monica studios and what they can do with 4 years on a decade-old console.

I hope to see this Level of Quality, Story Telling, Gameplay, Optimization and Care spread to all Developers and Publishers, gaming is only going to get bigger and the GOW Franchise has set another standard for AAA gaming.

This game takes the stunning visuals, epic storyline, and polished gameplay of its predecessor and elevates it to new heights. From the breathtaking vistas of the Nine Realms to the heart-pounding combat against towering beasts and mythological creatures, every moment of God of War: Ragnarok is a masterpiece.

Kratos returns as the central protagonist, and his journey is as emotional and engaging as ever. The bond he shares with his son Atreus is deepened in this installment, and the themes of family, redemption, and sacrifice are explored in profound ways. The voice acting, motion capture, and sound design are all top-notch, and the characters and their relationships feel more real than ever before.

The combat system has been refined and expanded, with new weapons, skills, and abilities that make each battle feel fresh and exciting. The boss fights are particularly memorable, with each one offering a unique challenge that tests the player's skills and strategic thinking.

The game's pacing is spot-on, with a perfect balance of action, exploration, and narrative that keeps the player engaged from start to finish. The side quests and optional content are also well-designed, offering a variety of challenges and rewards that add to the game's overall depth and replayability.

In short, God of War: Ragnarok is a masterpiece that sets a new standard for action-adventure games. It's a must-play for fans of the series and newcomers alike, and a shining example of what can be achieved when developers put their hearts and souls into a game. 10/10, without a doubt.

This seems like the result of taking an uninspired design and adding unlimited budget. You get something that is simultaneously so polished and yet so bland. I've never seen anything like it.

This seems like the result of taking an uninspired design and adding unlimited budget. You get something that is simultaneously so polished and yet so bland. I've never seen anything like it.

The story is...great overall but boring the majority of the time. There's a compelling cut scene where the main character is questioning whether his responsibilities as a father will take him back to an identity he wished to leave behind, then 5 minutes later your sidekick is shouting at you that they found the magical macguffin of "Take Us To The Next Level." It felt like the needs of the story and the needs of the game were pushing and pulling on each other, fighting for dominance.

The combat feels worse to control and less inspired in a post-Sekiro world. The game confidently ramps the difficulty up as if it has the tightness of a top tier action game and yet it doesn't. Baffling flaws persist from GoW 2018. You don't regenerate health between battles but dying heals you to full with generous checkpoints. This resulted in me dying in 1 hit at the beginning of most encounters and then starting with full health and winning on my next attempt only to rinse and repeat the next encounter. So basically I get a free loading screen at the beginning of every encounter. Yay!

The combat feels sloppy four years later. Hitboxes and staggering feel inconsistent, and the intricacies of the rpg mechanics are both poorly explained and essential to your success at middle difficulties. The camera is too close to you and that makes it hard to get a read on the battles. You also have little control over the direction you attack with melee attacks being locked into where you're pointing with the right stick. This makes it difficult to address foes who surround you. It feels like you have more weapons than you need. They don't seem to occupy a unique niche and they're repetitive and unsatisfying to use. It's pretty much the same combat as 2018 with more breadth but few improvements to core design.

The interface is awful(ly pretty). The map looks like a work of art and yet is largely unintuitive to read. The compass is a disaster. All your upgrade options are scattered willy nilly across separate tabs like someone sprayed a deck of cards across a table. And it all looks and feels immaculate like they paid a million dollars for every one of those bewildering screens.

The gameplay mostly consists of "find the thingy" where you look around these stunning environments where you can't really interact with stuff. You do non-puzzles (aka "nuzzles") where the solution is immediately clear 95% of the time. The fights are repetitive slogs with the same bombastic moves with crazy eye popping animations. I couldn't wait til the next cutscene where I could stop dealing with the chores. It's all busy work in a massive and jaw-droppingly beautiful world of blandness.

That's what's so weird about it. You can feel the money coming off the screen when you play. The acting, direction, sound, animation, it all feels like Benjamins wafting across your skin. But it feels so joyless and sometimes downright frustrating in its mediocrity. It's all the same problems with 2018 after 4 years and you know they had the money to do something about it. I guess I can't deny that a beautiful pig is still better than an ugly pig, but I was left wondering why they didn't use that money to address obvious issues from four years ago.

COMBAT - From a combat-side, it's actually quite bad. I recommend playing on a low difficulty as the combat is unfair and poorly designed in multiple occasions. Fighting wave after wave of monster sometimes is boring, runic attacks are horrible, positioning is irrelevant as enemies will slide towards you while attacking, in general it's very much not rewarding to master, it's probably worst than the first game.

STORY - It's worst than the first game as it expands tremendously moving away from the laser focus of the original. Characters like Mimir and Freya and Kratos himself are actually very much humanized taking away from them the aura of legends they used to have. The main villain of the story, however, is very well made (and acted). The finale was very satisfying in my opinion.

I have been a God of War fan ever since the 2018 game occurred and when this game was announced a few years ago, I couldn't have been more excited. Which makes it all the more satisfying for me to say it was so much better than I ever could've imagined and then some making it easily my personal GOTY for 2022. I'll start off by saying I didn't expect the soundtrack to be any better than the 2018 game since there was something special about hearing it back then but Bear McCeary actually made some new tracks that are so much more special that I was immersed even with all the UI on screen and I actually listen to some of his new tracks on my Spotify playlist. The combat is roughly the same blueprint as the first game but that's not a bad thing since the combat was already phenomenal and they improved on it even further with new tools at your disposal and a new weapon and this weapon does actually feel like an extension of Kratos's past if that makes sense (don't worry, it will once you see it for yourself) hence it deserves to be in this game. I was also glad they listened to feedback on how there wasn't a lot of boss variety in the 2018 game with new bosses being INCREDIBLY aggressive especially on the hard difficulty forcing you to change your fighting style on the fly and react in the snap of a finger. Plus, because of how it's a sequel to the 2018 game, you now have access to ALMOST all of the realms (one being permanently closed for reasons you'll understand once you play the game) and even though not all of them are fleshed out enough, they're all so beautiful and unique that they'll still leave a lasting impression and memory for years to come. Speaking of beautiful, this game is exactly that and that's especially impressive on a PS4 PRO let alone the base that it left me taking so many screenshots with the photo mode and how they even payed attention to subtle details like how when you activate the Spartan Rage, you can actually see his veins bulging. There are a LOT of characters new and old and even the characters with less screen time are utilized just enough so you can remember them all and it also helps all the performances for these characters are on another level to ensure they don't feel like unnecessary additions. There's also the fact that there are a LOT more side quests in this game but unlike most other games where they could either be connected to the world massively or just filler to extend the run time, the side quests here are in conjunction to the lore so you can do a side quest and it's so much more rewarding than a typical side quest because you learned about a characters past greatly. Finally, we have the story, sure the story in this game isn't as tight or simplistic as the 2018 game, but that's the point since you're supposed to look at it as a continuation of a story rather than a whole new story entirely and I can definitely say this is an incredible story combining both and one to leave a lasting impression for I would argue for GENERATIONS to come. Plus, there's also the fact if you actually play this game again, you'll realize "so that's what he meant" when you just shrugged it off when you first heard it making the small things hidden that make the game that much better. Now while I do see it as a masterpiece, it's certainly not a TOP-TIER one like The Last of Us Part 2 because there are some small details that while they're not a huge deal, they are enough to where I can say it's not perfect like how when I saw someone drawing, the book looked fully written in and it doesn't even look like they were even making process or even snow not moving properly when it's supposed to, but probably the biggest offender for me personally was either the quick turn being switched to either left trigger AND down button of the d-pad or moving the left analog stick down and clicking it to compensate for the new weapon as opposed to just the down button of the d-pad or some bugs where Kratos was frozen and couldn't get out and NO, the Day 1 patch didn't fix that. Now tbh, all masterpieces have their bugs and glitchs and the ones I mentioned are EXTREME nit picks and restarting the game does fix it meaning it doesn't stop this game from being an absolute MASTERPIECE. Overall, I can definitely say if you have a PS4/PS5, BUY THIS GAME IMMEDIATELY and if you don't, PICK UP THE CONSOLE for the game, don't wait for it to come to PC because that's how good it is. After all the talk about this version running very loudly on the base ps4 I was worried at first. This turned out to not be the case at all on my base PS4. I have had other games run much louder than this one. I noticed only one frame drop ever through out the 30 hours of gameplay. The PS4 version is completely fine.

As far as the game itself the story is amazing but confusing at times.

The only complaint I had was that during some puzzles the npc's would just comment a hint within three seconds of starting the puzzle. I actually prefer help on puzzles normally, but this was often said WAY too quickly.

I have played and beaten 100% of each GoW games on the hardest difficulties. This game has made me quit gaming. It ruined the franchise and Santa Monica studios should retire and be sterilized so they don't infect the world with more trash. It's a downgrade from 2018. It's an elden ring wannabe. Filled with lazy designed boss fights, subpar main quest bosses, and a clearly rushed end.
Riddled with artifical difficultly. The camera work should have stayed like the originals. This over the shoulder nonsense keeps you from keeping track of every enemy and projectile. The little arrows that warn you don't give any indication of the distance or speed at which travels.
In the OG games the camera allowed more management.
Generous auto tracking from enemies. Poor and very little combos. Just like 2018.

Great graphics and story. Beautiful. I will give devs that.
But the gameplay, level and boss design, is atrocious. Borderline a walking and traveling simulator. How do you prop up a fight with heimdall and have him be quite easy to beat. Why do optional fights take 3x as long as the main ones?
4 years of wait is for a Thor and Odin fight and it's the simplest of fights. Obviously rushed and poorly designed. was awfully sad to have optional bosses be better than the main ones.
The maven gave me more trouble..
Valks over berserkers. That fight where you fight those 3 berserker sisters is by far the worst designed boss fight of the last 10 years. If you cant come up with something other than toss in more enemies, you shouldn't be making games. There's 40 year DnD campaigns with more flair and design and creativity.
Borderline 3/4 of any boss fight has the bosses main ability to have adds. No cool moves no nothing. Just spam ground unblockables and summon auto target suicide bombers. If you can't make a boss tough without adding additional enemies or summons. It's a bad boss design. Simple as that I am so disappointed. I loved the 2018 game despite the downgrade of combat combos and the camera play. I was hoping they would fix the combos atleast.
But this is the last game I will ever buy.
No story simulator is worth 70 dollars.

The amount of times you'll get killed by **** you can't see at all is insane.
Do not buy. Do not buy. The story does make up for extremely bad gameplay
Critics are just paid industry plants. Anyone who actually think this game is above 5/10 needs to be sterilized so they can't spread stupidity either.
Cory Balrog you should be ashamed of yourself.

    Cons
-The story is not as tightly focused, emotive or as well written as the 2018 game.
-The sections where you play as Atreus drag and should really have been cut down (especially the first one).
-Some minor graphics bugs (on two occasions the enemy skins didn't load for about 10 seconds so they were invisible but I'm on original PS4 so, honestly, I'm actually amazed there weren't more graphical issues).
-I think I'm meant to like Atreus but he's low-key (Loki, get it?) sort of annoying.
-Too much American and modern slang sometimes ruins immersion.
-Characters blurt out the answers to puzzles pretty much immediately and there is no way to turn it off.

Generally, very minor quibbles. Definitely recommend.

There are hidden paths, side quests, treasures and challenges. You can not access everything at first as some paths are locked until you get the right item or ability. The riddles are again excellent. You have to use ice & fire abilities, find correct angles, search your surroundings and think about solutions. I fully enjoyed this. I should point out that it is not an open world game but has some big areas you can explore like Svartalheim, Alfheim or Vanaheim which are awesome.I should admit that gameplay wise the first few hours are a bit weaker to be fair. The battle system works well too. They made if challenging and rewarding. You get more abilities and can unlock even more with experience points. There are runes for special attacks, more armor and hilt options for different benefits and an amulet that gets better and better the more you repair it. My only negative is the doge roll. It feels a bit clumsy at times but this could be just me. For the presentation looks it really good with some exceptions here and there. Overall this is a masterpiece and worthy conclusion to the norther saga of God of War. The ending was so satisfying that it could end there for me but they leave the door open for a continuation. The game experience of God of War: Ragnarök is very uneven. The title features battles where main bosses serve as damage sponges, the plot that whiplashes between soul-searching and brutality, the world that is empty in some corners and over-saturated with puzzles in others. At the same time, it is a huge, well-crafted title with good overall story and character development. The complete absence of bugs and the game’s technical performance is more than impressive.

If Sony decided that this will be the final entry for the PS4 platform, I would be more than fine with this decision. Similar to Avengers: Endgame being the final tip of the hat to the original generation of MCU characters, this is a fitting tribute to one of the greatest PlayStation generations of all time, and a suitable send-off.

The game runs smoothly, without any noticeable frame drop even on the older console, a clear sign that the optimization process carried out by Santa Monica Studios has been flawless... God of War Ragnarok is exactly what we hoped for, and even more. It offers a masterfully told story using a more mature approach, seasoned with a unique setting, a rich characterization of the characters, and challenges that can keep even hardcore gamers busy at the highest difficulties. In other words, it is a title that is simply just too good to be missed.
