I didn't even know this game was coming out, so it was like a nostalgia surprise when I saw it in the store. Being a big G IJoe fan, I assume I would be the target audience for it. I watched the trailer and bought it on impluse Aaaannd I regret doing so. This game is not worth $53, maybe $20, for a super fan?
I was super stoked about this upon purchase, but the more I played the more disappointed I became. I love that you have 12 characters, 6 from each faction. But they all play similar. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow mirror each other, Firefly and Sc-fy mirror each other, Roadblock and Destro mirror each other. etc. So you're getting a new character, but beyond looking different, they do the same thing.
Visually, you can tell they were going for the 80's cartoon style, kinda like the Transformers Devastation game. But they never quite got there, needs more polish (This "needs more polish" theme is felt everywhere in the game btw) The story is told in a comic book style and it's okay. The art goes from okay to, "boy, they were rushing here to get it done".
I was disappointed that there was no skill tree, ability upgrade/selection, no upgrading of any kind, no variant of equipment to try out. Only skins, which are nice but leaves a lack of depth to the game. You have weapon pickups of different guns within the game itself, but again, it just lacks depth. And the sound and impact of weapons are non-existent. I think it's because they were following the original cartoon where they all shot lasers. So the weapons lack any sort of "power" when fired. They all sound like a sizzling wisp and when they hit, it lacks impact. Authentic to the show? yes, but I think they could have tweaked it for a better feel.
And oh my...the worst. Its been awhile that I played a game that the controls were downright awful. This one as taken the cake as the worst controls I've experience in years, if not decade. I would consider myself a competent shooter. With this, even after adjusting the sensitivity of the controls and turning OFF aim assist (which is on by default) hitting enemies was impossible. I would expend entire clips trying to kill one enemy that was bouncing around the map. And I was playing the game on hard (3rd out of the 4 difficulties) The AI of the enemies were erratic, without purpose. Like trying to shoot a pinball that was bouncing around in a pinball machine.
I was making my way through the game, okay until I got to snow mountain level with Sc-fy and I had to stay within a area while a meter filled up while enemies swarmed in. I spent an hour here and the meter only got to 53% before I became overwhelmed and died. I simply could not get past this part, the horrible aim, the enemies erratic movement. I had to go back and lower the difficulty. At which point the enemies aren't so squirrely and you take less damage. Good luck beating this on the hardest setting, even with Mods (You get mods after you beat a level, infinity ammo, double damage, etc)
I also wish they put the default melee button somewhere besides the triangle. Charging in and trying to melee someone, but with the squirrely nature of the AI, I have to take my thumb off the right trigger to hit the triangle and by the time I do that, YES in that split second, the enemy is no longer infront of me but as squirrelled to the left or right or behind me. I was happy to know I could choose a different layout so melee was R1. But that mean they changed other buttons that I was accustomed too. Thanks, you gave me what I wanted, but took away what was already working. You didn't need to change the whole layout for one button swap. Swap triangle with R1, done, that's it. I don't understand. I don't get it.
You also get to play as two vehicles and I think this is another wasted opportunity. GI Joe is known for the their wacky designed vehicles. And although you do see them as set dressings, you don't get to pilot them. The little bit we do get is a on rails (left to right system) shoot what appears in front of you game play. It's something, but doesn't quite scratch the itch.
In the end, I was just saddened and disappointed at such a wasted opportunity. I feel like this is a incomplete game. A great starting point, but never went any further than the concept ideas. I can't recommend the game at full price. Deep discount and are a super fan like myself? Maybe at $20.
Oh, I forgot, MP. Anyway, there isn't any. Local only. Again, falling inline with the rest of the game, feels like they didn't have time to do MP so local is best we get. You can play locally with a buddy. I've found playing the crappiest of games co-op is always enjoyable, but again you are looking at a split screen, so there's that. Just dissappointing.… Expand
