If you're a sentimental fan of G.I. Joe, then you are the most likely to truly enjoy this game. G.I. Joe fans will enjoy the characters, the things to collect, the Saturday morning cartoon-ish visuals, as well as the campy cartoony storyline. For all others, this will just come across as a run-of-the-mill third-person shooter game that will require some patience to find a control scheme setting you can work with.

This is a decent game if you want something with couch co-op to play with your friends, even if overall it feels uninspired and a little bit monotonous.

There is some fun to be had in G.I. Joe Operation Blackout. The story is great but there is an over reliance on making you defend a position while wave upon wave on enemies attack. It's lower priced than most new releases but even taking that into account I can only really recommend this to die hard Joe fans.

G.I. Joe is faithful to its source of inspiration, with a great cast of characters and locations, as well as an overall atmosphere worthy of the brand name. Everything else, though, breathes mediocrity, from the lacklustre AI to the overly simple level design. Shame, cause there's a lot of potential in this license.

I wish I could wholeheartedly suggest checking out G.I. Joe Operation Blackout, but I don’t think a solid roster of playable characters and an enjoyable story is enough to put up with the lackluster gameplay.

G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout is messy. The presentation is inconsistent, while the story is serviceable at best. The addition of local multiplayer outweighs the lack of online play, and the game is lengthy enough. However, the poor combat mechanics drag down the experience heavily, and on a platform that's absolutely bursting with more competent third-person shooters, this is one that you can easily pass on.

You’ve played this before, 25 years ago on PS1. The ideas are ancient, the implementation poor, and when a dubiously named hero is the only fun you get from a shooter in 2020 it’s time to avoid. [Issue#182, p.160]

Would've gave it 8 but wanted to make up for all those bitter low scores. It's fun on higher difficulty and reminds me of why I even started playing the PlayStation. G.I Joe Operation Blackout
For the fans and noone else
Operation Blackout is a 5 hour long 3rd person shooter that tells the typical goodguy vs bad guy story, however this time you get to play on both sides.. there are 12 characters here that feel different enough with their own personal weapons and abilities from both the cobra and GI Joe side..
You can tell that operation blackout really is for fans of this series… its just that unfortunately its not really for anyone else, as GI Joe Operation Blackout just isn’t any fun to play…
To an extent.. don’t get me wrong there are 2 or 3 characters I had fun playing as, but mostly in the shorter missions.. as for the most part, every mission here feels like a grindy unfun slog, get to a location, take o nhordes of enemies until the time runs out or the game decides youre done… constantly recycled locations, the occasional dull vehicle combat sectoins, and the gunplay here is so unsatisfying and grindy feeling.. enemies feel like bullet sponges making it a blast in comparison when you get to play as a ninja character just slicing through them with swords, and enemies run around in circles like youre online playing call of duty.. youre dancing and shooting, it isn’t satisfying, its annoying…
And there isn’t much else to say about operation blackout, this game just isn’t fun, other than the fan service and variety of characters, theres nothing here to make It worth your time, that is unles again you are already a gi joe fan and youre itching for a gi joe game to play through..
Operation Blackout is very playable… just not for the most part any enjoyable
I give GI JOE Operation Blackout
    a 5/10

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I didn't even know this game was coming out, so it was like a nostalgia surprise when I saw it in the store. Being a big G IJoe fan, I assume I would be the target audience for it. I watched the trailer and bought it on impluse Aaaannd I regret doing so. This game is not worth $53, maybe $20, for a super fan?
I was super stoked about this upon purchase, but the more I played the more disappointed I became. I love that you have 12 characters, 6 from each faction. But they all play similar. Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow mirror each other, Firefly and Sc-fy mirror each other, Roadblock and Destro mirror each other. etc. So you're getting a new character, but beyond looking different, they do the same thing.
Visually, you can tell they were going for the 80's cartoon style, kinda like the Transformers Devastation game. But they never quite got there, needs more polish (This "needs more polish" theme is felt everywhere in the game btw) The story is told in a comic book style and it's okay. The art goes from okay to, "boy, they were rushing here to get it done".
I was disappointed that there was no skill tree, ability upgrade/selection, no upgrading of any kind, no variant of equipment to try out. Only skins, which are nice but leaves a lack of depth to the game. You have weapon pickups of different guns within the game itself, but again, it just lacks depth. And the sound and impact of weapons are non-existent. I think it's because they were following the original cartoon where they all shot lasers. So the weapons lack any sort of "power" when fired. They all sound like a sizzling wisp and when they hit, it lacks impact. Authentic to the show? yes, but I think they could have tweaked it for a better feel.
And oh my...the worst. Its been awhile that I played a game that the controls were downright awful. This one as taken the cake as the worst controls I've experience in years, if not decade. I would consider myself a competent shooter. With this, even after adjusting the sensitivity of the controls and turning OFF aim assist (which is on by default) hitting enemies was impossible. I would expend entire clips trying to kill one enemy that was bouncing around the map. And I was playing the game on hard (3rd out of the 4 difficulties) The AI of the enemies were erratic, without purpose. Like trying to shoot a pinball that was bouncing around in a pinball machine.
I was making my way through the game, okay until I got to snow mountain level with Sc-fy and I had to stay within a area while a meter filled up while enemies swarmed in. I spent an hour here and the meter only got to 53% before I became overwhelmed and died. I simply could not get past this part, the horrible aim, the enemies erratic movement. I had to go back and lower the difficulty. At which point the enemies aren't so squirrely and you take less damage. Good luck beating this on the hardest setting, even with Mods (You get mods after you beat a level, infinity ammo, double damage, etc)
I also wish they put the default melee button somewhere besides the triangle. Charging in and trying to melee someone, but with the squirrely nature of the AI, I have to take my thumb off the right trigger to hit the triangle and by the time I do that, YES in that split second, the enemy is no longer infront of me but as squirrelled to the left or right or behind me. I was happy to know I could choose a different layout so melee was R1. But that mean they changed other buttons that I was accustomed too. Thanks, you gave me what I wanted, but took away what was already working. You didn't need to change the whole layout for one button swap. Swap triangle with R1, done, that's it. I don't understand. I don't get it.

You also get to play as two vehicles and I think this is another wasted opportunity. GI Joe is known for the their wacky designed vehicles. And although you do see them as set dressings, you don't get to pilot them. The little bit we do get is a on rails (left to right system) shoot what appears in front of you game play. It's something, but doesn't quite scratch the itch.

In the end, I was just saddened and disappointed at such a wasted opportunity. I feel like this is a incomplete game. A great starting point, but never went any further than the concept ideas. I can't recommend the game at full price. Deep discount and are a super fan like myself? Maybe at $20.

Oh, I forgot, MP. Anyway, there isn't any. Local only. Again, falling inline with the rest of the game, feels like they didn't have time to do MP so local is best we get. You can play locally with a buddy. I've found playing the crappiest of games co-op is always enjoyable, but again you are looking at a split screen, so there's that. Just dissappointing.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game was extremely disappointing that I had to create a profile in hopes of saving st least someone else's money. The aiming with certain guns is very frustrating. Especially when an enemy in the air decides to move at the last moment causing you to readjust your aim. This is horrible with a sluggish aim system. If you want to go an melee the enemy character you are trying to kill, will just run circles around you. When you actually can get your flow and your aim is on point. Your AI companion will stand directly up on you not shooting enemies. On the cobra side the gi joe enemies are all blue. So your blue companion stands in front of you causing you to think you are getting ran up on.. im good on all that. im returning this game and trying to get some value back out of it. The flashy cover art and trailer fooled me. Save your money even if you are a fan. Giving it a 3 because the first level wasn't horrible and I didn't seem to have any major game malfunctions. The second level turned into a frustrating defense turret game. This is a very poorly made game. Expand
