Get Even is so much more than just survival-horror and that makes things very interesting. Sometimes you have to do a lot of searching and backtracking, which can be frustrating, but mostly this is a thrilling catch-you-by-the-throat-kind of psychological video game.

An unusual, occasionally powerful, must-play game. [Issue#189, p.79]

Get Even is a respectable first-person shooter, sure. But despite finishing the game eager to start a second playthrough to experience the story with new perspective, the lack of player choice was a considerable disappointment. I felt duped for hunting down every piece of evidence during my time with Cole Black, because it didn’t influence the truth that ultimately emerged. This omission reduces Get Even from an imaginative game to a passable one that made me feel I was watching a thriller film more than playing a game.

Get Even's use of layered sound and even more layered story is unsettling and great, but other awkward mechanics make this psychological thriller a bit less than the sum of some very fine parts.

Whilst the story is compelling with plenty of facets to dig into, the pacing and combat felt a little tiresome. Great characters and presentation become mired in an experience that could’ve been tighter. Get Even is worth a look for a strong, narrative adventure with some interesting hooks, if you can stomach the uneven pacing.

Despite some technical failings, the narrative and the atmosphere make the trip to Get Even worth taking.

Get Even tells a devastating story that ends with a striking M. Night Shyamalan-like twist. Interestingly, it's the most crucial part of the entire story, and you see none of it. The visuals are left entirely to the imagination, which is unexpected and impactful. It is these kinds of powerful moments that emphasize Get Even's key strength--delivering a twisting narrative that is fascinating enough to make up for its lackluster gameplay elements.

A sometimes beguiling yet, frequently intriguing blend of first-person exploration and shooter genres, Get Even’s uneven execution results in a game that is commendable for its ambition and relentlessly engaging narrative, but one which ultimately fails to come together in practice.

While it has its flaws, there’s a uniqueness to Get Even we rarely see in video games today. Right away, The Farm 51 demonstrates its desire to be different, crossing between genres and actually taking a gamble. While it doesn’t always pay off, we’re still left with something both intriguing, experimental and, at times, thought provoking.

Despite its flaws, Get Even is still a very worthwhile experience. The game’s narrative is a little predictable, but it’s told well. It builds tension unlike anything else, and uses jump scares sparingly to give maximum effect. It’s a great game, with unfortunate quirks holding it back – which will hopefully get patched out.

Like its protagonist, you're left feeling Get Even needed a little more love and attention to make its many ideas come together. [July 2017, p.83]

Get Even has a lot of ambition, but never quite realises it. While there are lots of individual beats to like – most notably the exceptional music and sound design - its multiple influences never quite congeal into anything solid.

It’s ambitious, imaginative and often intriguing and does its best to deliver something fresh and unique. Unfortunately, Get Even fails to nail down the fundamentals, resulting in a sadly disjointed, overwrought experience.

It's often said, 'It's the journey that counts, not the destination'. Get Even is evidence that's not always the case, as the sum of its parts fails to gel despite some good moments. [July 2016, p.88]

Get Even intertwines exploration, walking simulator, shooter and easy puzzles with intense narrative that has ramifications based on decision that hooks the player. But mixing up all those mechanics without any of them being truly remarkable, several visual issues, specially taking into consideration the genre we're talking about, and its constant up and downs when it comes to gameplay hinder its value among the many nowadays competitors.

A tangle of technical and gameplay issues often obscure it, but there’s some impressive storytelling to be had in this ambitious techno-thriller.

Get Even is almost afraid of what it could have been, settling for a more traditional horror experience instead of becoming what it really wants to be. The genre has been healthy in recent months, but a wildly different approach is always welcome and Get Even only accomplishes that in fleeting moments.

A trashy, overwrought psychodrama with the odd inspired touch that alternates between simple forensic puzzles and gimmicky gunplay.

Interesting game. I felt the story was pretty good. Even though it had the somewhat usual story tropes through flashbacks/memories I feltInteresting game. I felt the story was pretty good. Even though it had the somewhat usual story tropes through flashbacks/memories I felt like it was handled good. The concept for the game is extremely original and it is really cool. The combat on the other hand has some cool things they do with the guns and morphing abilities, but feels like an average FPS during it. The game really shines when you are not in combat and just trying to figure things out with a little bit of puzzle solving. Overall really good game especially only paying $30 for it is great with a roughly 6-8 HR long campaign too isn't bad at all. Full Review »

    Get even review

What is real? That's the game's tagline and it permeates throughout the game. Going through memories, exploring the past you never know what to expect. This is psychological thriller at its finest. The game has some slight horror themes and creepy atmosphere but it is not a horror game. It actually is a multitude of genres. Part adventure, puzzle solving, fps it does all these very well and tells an amazing story as well. In fact this game is heavily focused on story that some of the gameplay seems like an afterthought but that doesnt mean it isn't fun to play. The shooting mechanics are nothing new or exciting but some of the weapons like the corner gun are fun if a tad bit difficult to use at times. The graphics while not the best still look pretty good. It isn't a triple AAA game by any means but it looks decent and has some cool particle effects and visual effects at time. The sound design however is a huge plus. The sounds from footsteps to the sound of guns are all great and sound heavy. The music is also one of the best things about the game. It's a great soundtrack and just fit so well with the game. There is even a track that follows the characters loud breathing and one that follows wit a ticking clock. It's just so unique and sounds wonderful. The length of the game is good as well. It took me around 9 hours or so to reach the credits but I still don't know the full story as there is a ton of documents and items to find to fill in the blanks. A little plus I liked is once you find all the clues in a memory, you unlock a code which you can then enter the same memory and find an optional door that unlocks more back story and even new guns for your "mind palace" the mind palace is alittlw hub of information on the memories you've been to and your gun locker. It's a neat little place an reminds me of Sherlock. The best thing in this game though, aside from the Excellent soundtrack (seriously it's that good!) Is the story. It has so many moments where youll be confused, sad, angry and just what the hell is going on. O don't want to say to much about it because this game is super easy to spoil. Just know that it's worth experiencing. There are a few issues like dumb ai and muddy textures bit overall no real complaints Im so glad this game was worth the wait and you can see how much detail and complexity the story offers. It's a great little game and again it's not a AAA title. It's actually half the price of a full game at $29.99. it's well worth the money and time just to experience something different and unique. I highly recommend this one as it offers one of if not the best story in an fps, an amazing soundtrack and lengthy experience.
