Apr 9, 2019The nostalgia is strong in Generation Zero, both in and outside, and Avalanche Studios has more or less successfully bet on it. It worked for me even though I know it won’t necessarily work for everyone. Still, if you’re looking for something that does considerably less than most of those shiny games out there but at the same time has more integrity while doing so, Generation Zero might just be up your alley, although it’s a true niche title if there ever was one. To sum the game up, it’s like an 80’s Volvo; boxy but good.

Apr 9, 2019This isn't Call of Duty in the land of Swedish meatballs, it's Boston Dynamics in an IKEA-effect hunting sim. Come for the difficult robot fights, stay for the Arctic Circle sunsets. The technical issues will make you rage quit one day and then bring you back the next.
-
Mar 26, 2019The gameplay loop of loot, shoot, and run all feels good, and I’d like to see more story added to the game. Also, it would be great if there were more machines, more weapons, and proper difficulty scaling for players who want to play by themselves. Above all, the world is just too big.

Playstation Official Magazine UKMay 3, 2019While there’s not much to Avalanche’s mechanical uprising, running-and-gunning bad robots with buds is a blast. The arresting Scandinavian vistas are worth visiting. [Issue@162, p.93]

Apr 5, 2019I find Generation Zero to have an interesting, stealthy core that sadly is undermined by a somewhat empty world. The technical issues might lead some to hold off and I do hope Avalanche keep supporting this blueprint. There is an appeal to this that does want me to return, providing something more is on the horizon.

Apr 4, 2019Generation Zero is an ambitious title with a strong idea, but fails when it tries to execute that wonderful idea. The world of Generation Zero is big but shallow, and in single-player mode, you’ll probably get bored after several hours. Whoever, if you team-up with some friends, you will probably enjoy its apocalyptic atmosphere set in the 80s, along with its great music and sound design.
-
Mar 29, 2019I’m not going to go so far as to call Generation Zero a straight cash grab, but charging $40 for a game that was clearly rushed out the door is a hard sin to ignore. I’m not entirely sure what Avalanche’s final vision for Generation Zero was, but it clearly wasn’t confident enough in that vision to give the game the proper care and resources that were required.

Apr 4, 2019Fun shooter with wonderful environments that had needed a few months extra of development time. As of now it suffers from empty spots and far too many bugs. One does simply not release games with invisible walls.
-
Mar 27, 2019Frankly speaking, Generation Zero feels unfinished. A massive trail of narrative bread crumbs exists for players that might culminate in a great yarn about this robotic invasion, but the sheer dullness and technical issues makes this game not worth seeing to the halfway point, much less the end.
-
Apr 12, 2019Although the gameplay and the audio design are nicely done, we didn't walk away with a very positive feeling with regards to Generation Zero. The world around you is dull and uninspired and hardly offers any variation. The amount of graphical bugs and glitches is enormous. The way the story is presented left us feeling cold and that's a shame really because the game definitely has potential.
-
Mar 31, 2019Generation Zero stumbles on its own concept et never achieves to find balance between shooter and survival. Repetitive and dull, it does have some ideas but they don’t have enough impact to hide all the flaws.

Apr 10, 2019When I first read the premise of Generation Zero I was intrigued and before I even loaded the game up for the first time I was excited. I wanted to like this game. Unfortunately, the game quickly falls into a beautiful void of its own making. With weak storytelling and empty gameplay, Generation Zero sinks into the mud and collapses like so many tents at the festival that day, gripping to weak foundations.
-
Apr 3, 2019I wanted to like this so badly and was truly excited for it. I hate to say this but it is a waste of your time and money. Give this one a miss.
-
Mar 29, 2019If we thought that Generation Zero's Concept was worthy, we made a big mistake as nothing makes us want to play this game apart from the nice graphics and the tense atmosphere. Everything else is a true mess, from the repetitive action to the truckloads of bugs.
-
Apr 29, 2019If you’re the sort of person who enjoys aimless wandering but doesn’t like the idea of getting up off the couch and actually doing it, then you might be in luck here. Otherwise, don’t bother, because it’s absolutely not worth it.

Edge MagazineApr 25, 2019So sparse is the experience that it takes about four or five bewildered hours for the reality to sink in that yes, this is all there is. [Issue#332, p.114]
-
Apr 12, 2019Periodically beautiful yet consistently broken, Generation Zero’s brand of monotonous, sterile and bug-riddled open-world first-person shooting is something that you should avoid at all costs.
-
Apr 9, 2019Generation Zero holds plenty of promise, but its current state makes it impossible to recommend. From the painful inventory management to the lifeless open world to the haphazard multiplayer, there's little positive to be found here.
-
Apr 3, 2019Generation zero is an experience that came out from nothingness just to return to it, even if the developers manage to fix all the numerous bugs and glitches miraculously, it will remain as a perfect example for game with no purpose, no meaning and no essence.
-
Mar 27, 2019Even if you’re in love with its concept, Generation Zero is an experience you should avoid at all costs. Thanks to archaic co-operative design, an open world that feels sparse at even the best of times, and an inventory system that routinely works against you, disappointment takes centre stage here. You may catch one or two beautiful vistas along the way, but as the framerate drops into the single digits, you’ll wish you never bothered.
-
May 10, 2019Coming from seasoned developers who’ve turned out great games like Just Cause and Mad Max, the quality of this brand-new IP is incredibly disappointing. I hope that it continues to be patched and improved, because the current state of affairs can’t possibly showcase the vision Avalanche must have originally intended.
