I can't say a bad thing about this game, it has everything I could want. Phenomenal soundtrack, great story with themes from Greek mythology, and quotes/moments that gave me enough chills to go back through and play this game again and again. I'd recommend this game to anyone and everyone, even if it's not for everyone. Fantastic.

    *Soundtrack great
    *Graphics okay
*Story is just there to be
*Gameplay is dodging, melee/ranged attacks, parrying

Normal difficulty is challenging but you can play it on easy difficulty to simply enjoy the music

Please stop reading these crap reviews. We all agree the game is not perfect. BUT, if you are ready for a challenge (it's not that hard if you're not a casual player) you'll like this game, it can last from 2 hours to 8, it depends on you. Try it, you'll not regret it.

Furi is a fantastic game for anyone interested in challenging combat games. It focuses on creating a deeply satisfying game where you are forced to master the combat system until you are unstoppable, and tells an interesting story along the way.

One thing Furi does very well is think outside the box a bit and this is evident in the graphics. The scenery as you walk between fights provides a nice respite from the hectic action and I'd describe the graphics as similar to cell-shaded, which is a good thing. The game is a pleasure to look at. The boss fights themselves often become a cluster of lights as they shoot endless waves of lasers at you, but the reprieve between battles stops this from becoming too much.

The gameplay of Furi I expect to be more divisive. I am eternally grateful that there are varying levels of difficulty in the game as I would not have meekly completed it otherwise, so kudos for accessibility rather than a commitment to the 'git gud' cult.

A specific mechanic that irked me a lot in the fighting was that your enemy can become temporarily invulnerable, which strikes me as quite unbalanced. Furthermore, I found that once they hit me, it easily led to a succession of attacks, whereas I was lucky to achieve a combo of any sort.

When I played on higher difficulties I found the game suffered badly from repetition and wore my patience much sooner. The fights just drag on too long. They do try to have each enemy have different 'stages' but this was exhausting for me rather than engaging.

The combat is a tad basic also. The character doesn't develop or learn new skills. I think this would have helped combat any repetition.

This leads me to the story. In Furi you are a silent protagonist guided through a linear path by a strange character with a rabbit's head, giving off Donnie Darko vibes. He is meant to be the mechanic that conveys the story, but is vaguely philosophical and tenuously related waffling didn't do much for me.

If anything the game came across as some pretentious and elitist attempt to gain cult status. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely an audience that will cherish this like a gem, however that audience does not include me.

A pretty hard game for sure, but a very rewarding one.

The combat itself is a bit lacklustre when compared to the entries action games have had over the years (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, God Hand), but the bosses are fantastic, and the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE. I really do mean it when I say that Furi has some of the best music I've heard in a game in a long time. That's going to be subjective of course, but I thought I would mention it.

The combat is strictly 2-D, but that's not a bad thing because it solves the biggest issue with most action games: the camera. Where the combat does fall apart is the parrying. There's a green flash, you parry it, you get some health back. You never have to really register the attack animations, you just reflexively hit the parry button. It's not a bad thing really, but I thought it dragged down the combat at least a bit. There are some other issues with hitboxes and your dash length, but those are minor and don't occur very often. Again, the combat itself is quite simple when compared to many other action titles, but the bosses more than make up for it.

The story is pretty much a non-element, so I wish they had got rid of the stupid walking sections between bosses. Yeah, downtime is important, but I wish you could skip them somehow. This won't annoy a lot of people, but it hurts the game replay value a lot.

Furi is a boss rush with great bosses. That's pretty much all that matters. The other issues exist, but Furi is a 5 hour game, and I enjoyed each one of them. If you want a solid action game with hard bosses, get Furi.

What would happen if you meshed twitchy 3D melee combat, twin-stick shooting, bullet-hell, and the adrenaline from a difficult boss fight? If you enjoy these listed mechanics, then Furi will absolutely not disappoint you. Couple this with beautiful visuals, and you got a product that will compel you to become a better fighter.

In Furi, you are given four basic actions at the start. You can slash, dash, shoot, and parry. All actions, excluding parrying can be charged up, some bullets are destructible, and perfect parries are rewarded with extra damage. These are the only actions you get at the start, and they’re the only actions you’ll have at the end, with the exception of the optional final boss, which replaces your charged shot with a laser. These mechanics are easy to grasp, yet very demanding to fully master. That also goes for the game’s 10 challenging bosses, each with multiple phases that introduce new attacks to keep the battle intense and satisfying. The bosses are distinct, and a helluva lot of fun, thanks to the fact that no two bosses are the same. In one battle, you’ll avoid waves of bullets while being shot at with a sniper rifle. In another, you’ll engage in a melee only duel between another skilled fighter. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the duration of my roughly 4 hour playthrough. However, don’t think that Furi is completely unfair, as there are a few systems that keep the playing field (mostly) fair. For instance, every attack you parry restores a small bit of health, completing a phase of a boss fight restores all of your health, and you have 3 tries to get through a phase before you have to restart the whole fight. These systems help alleviate any feelings that the game was too bias in the favor of the bosses, and kept each fight fair, but still challenging.

After my first time through Furi, I had died a bunch, and took a ton of hits from all the bosses, including the optional final one. However, on my second playthrough, I was hit less than 100 times, never died once, and finished the game in under 2 hours. I absolutely love the feeling of personal progression, not only because being a badass is a reward on it’s own, but knowing that I’ve had the same tools since the beginning truly solidifies a feeling of improvement, unlike other games, where leveling up increases your attack damage, damage resistance, etc. While those systems aren’t bad, Furi’s progression system is a breath of fresh air, as it’s solely tied to you. Not feeling challenged enough? Got all the S Ranks on Furi difficulty? Well, try your luck on the games harder difficulty, Furier, as the bosses attacks are reworked, faster, and harder to dodge. There’s no damage increase or health decrease on this difficulty, which is quite unique, compared to other games’ harder difficulties, where you die in 1 hit, and your enemies can take 1000 hits before hitting half health. (Yes, I’m looking at you, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Realistic Mode)!

My only problems with Furi are a few bugs that hindered a good run, such as getting stuck on the environment, and not properly loading into the fight. However, I do wish that Furi gave you the ability to practice a certain phase of a boss fight that you’re having trouble on, instead of having to go through the whole boss fight again, just to reach the trouble spot. This problem popped up in my head twice, both trouble spots being in the final phase. Having to go through the whole fight over again just to reach the trouble spot can become tedious after a while, and Furi will temporarily lose its appeal. However, once I persevered past the trouble spot, those feelings immediately went away.

Furi is a unique game, meshing two fun genres of combat with a boss rush format to create a challenging, adrenaline-pumping experience. While this game certainly won’t be for everyone, due to the game’s high-end difficulty, it will not disappoint those who commit to becoming a better fighter.

If you like adrenaline rushes and challenging but fair gameplay, this is a must buy. This game does not hold your hand, do not expect to complete it unless you plan on giving the game a fair shake. But if you give it your all, what you will get is one of the best experiences on modern gaming platforms.

The content of this game is a series of fantastic boss battles. Nothing more, nothing less. Each boss you face demands and increasing amount of mastery of the controls until you will find yourself breezing through attack patterns that gave you many game overs at the beginning. On a second playthrough you will surprised at how you breeze through the game.

The battles can look like they're ripped straight out of an action tv show, with the player switching back and forth between intense bullet hell shooting and fast melee and parrying combat. The controls are not overly complex like in an action game, but the game demands you switch back and forth fast between these two styles of play, which makes for a really exciting experience. The music, which is provided by various big artists in the electronic music scene such as Carpenter Brut and The Toxic Avenger. These fast music tracks are the fire motivating the player to complete these difficult boss battles. The music makes you feel like you can do anything, which certainly helps on the brutal last phase on certain fights.

There are segments between fights where you walk to the next boss as a sort of build-up and cool-down. These go on a little long, but luckily there is a speedrun mode which lets you play just the fights back to back. Although for the full experience, definitely play through the story.

There is also an expanded difficulty for those who have completed the game. This mode gives bosses entirely new attack patterns, so it is essentially doubling the content for those who are up to the challenge. I thought I'd never be skilled enough to play this mode, but as I replayed the game a few times I found that I got much, much better at it. You are capable of a lot more than you think. Even if you think the regular difficulty is too hard, with patience and persistence you can beat the game, and it is worth it.

Do not expect God of War level graphics, but expect a fantastic boss rush game that you can sink your teeth into. Furi is a better as a boss rush game than God of War is as an action game. If you're looking to play a twitch reflex game that rewards skill, frankly, Furi is favorable to God of War in that respect.

Verdict: Easy Recommendation for Action Fans

My flaws with this game is that it's just boss fights, like why can't their be weaker enemies you fight to make your way up to a boss, like God of war or other great games. Also their is really no story, your just in a high security prison and now you need to break out. THATS IT. I thoroughly enjoyed this game. But I must admit it isn't for everyone.

First of all I must acknowledge that this isn't the most impressive looking game on the PS4.

One could argue that the animé art style is simplistic, but even accounting for that, I believe this game could look better if more resources and time were put into the visuals. But this is a low budget game, so I will cut it some slack.

In the audio department, this game ranks right up there with the some of the best video game soundtracks I have ever come across. Its techno beats which change and become more intense as you go through the phases of battle are superb. It really augments the high octane action of this game.

There is a very simplistic story to follow, but it is easily the weakest aspect of the game. The slight twist at the ending was a welcome surprise for me, but that twist couldn’t redeem this game from a storytelling point of view.

The true thrill of this game is in the gameplay department. It follows the “Boss Rush” formula which pits you against boss after boss with only the short story/narrative sequences filling in the transition between boss arenas. It is a simple formula, but sometimes simplicity is best.

You use the left joystick to move around and the right joystick shoots small projectiles in the direction pointed. A larger charged projectile can accessed by pressing R1. You then have a melee (sword) attack button, a dash button and a block/parry button. The sword attack can be charged for more damage and the dash can be charged to cover more distance. These different actions are then woven into the boss fights forcing you to use every move in your arsenal in order to progress.

The bosses are unique individuals whose goal is to stop you at all costs. There are multiple phases that you go through in each battle. Phases range from 4 to 6 per boss. Each time the HP of the boss runs out, you proceed unto the next phase which replenishes your HP as well as the boss’ HP. The bosses gain additional moves and patterns with each phase. The final phase is always a “bullet hell” sequence which I wasn’t particularly fond of in the beginning, but learnt to enjoy as I continued playing.

Due to the stylish attacks and mini cut scenes during battles, this game feels like you are starring in your very own Japanese animé. You slash, shoot, dash, and parry as the bosses desperately try to stop you. This is the definition of a white knuckle, action video game.

    But…

This game is hard. Brutally hard.

You have three lives, but these bosses will chew through each and every one in the most unforgiving manner. This is because this game will throw new patterns and attacks at you that simply cannot be reacted to without you learning them beforehand.

This creates a trial and error grind that many gamers do not have the patience to endure. The game designers knew this and included an easy mode, but this mode has no rewards. You must complete the normal mode in order to get the real rewards and ending.

The main negative I have from a gameplay point of view is the relatively long delay between when the dash button is pressed and when your character dashes on screen. An inherent delay from having a “dash on release” property (in order to have a charged dash) is expected, but I believe the delay is so big, it requires you to memorize the incoming attacks instead of dashing on reaction. But this may have been a design choice of the developers to maintain difficulty.

All in all, I enjoyed this game. I am the kind of gamer who doesn’t like to lose, and when a game tries to beat me into a corner, I keep fighting back until I prevail. I take pleasure in these victories. But I fully understand that these difficult grinds are not for everyone. You will need patience, skill and even a bit of luck with this game. But it is a thrilling ride all the way.

Story: The story is simplistic until near the end with the big twist but that's a good thing. You play as a sword and gun wielding stranger that has one goal in mind "The jailer is the key, kill him and you will be free" You followed by a mysterious person dressed as a rabbit who wants the same as you. I won't ruin the plot twist here but its unexpected and makes every conversation during your battles make sense.

Gameplay: This is where this game shines. When in battle you have two different play styles. Shooting with your gun in twin stick fashion and fast pace sword play. Both are intense, fast and increasingly difficult. The controls are precise so if you mess up, it is completely your fault but once you have it down, you feel like your own boss, you feel like a total bad ass. The only part I had problems with was the walking sections. The environments are beautiful but the camera moves so much while walking that I end up getting confused what direction on the left stick to go with. Lucky this is fixed by clicking X, which will do these part automatically.

Soundtrack: I love it. Some are intense while other have a great techno beat and pace that complement the neon visuals. Not much else to say, its a great fit for the fast action on screen.

Conclusion: This game surprises me how it came out of nowhere and came from a developer that has not made any console games before. This game is the most fun I have had in a while. It made me feel so satisfied when I perfectly hit every strike against my opponent and escape danger with a quick dart across the screen. The difficult may turn some people off but I highly recommend checking this one out. Its available on Steam and PS4 for 24.99 and is free for Playstation Plus Members this month
