Fun idea for people that like challenging games, but the fights do drag out a lot, and the scenes between the fights are really quite boring. However, plenty of great ideas, and worth it for people who like a good challenge.

The problem with Furi is the way in which it's speedrun style philosophy is contradicted by it's 'oh you have to wait for your opponent to finish doing what there doing before you can attack them' design.

Furi simply leaves no room for individual play styles or stategies. All you can do is react to what's happening in front of you rather than trying to force the issue. Furi may bring

Furi may bring to mind games like el Shaddia and Journey with it's wonderfully colourfull and stylised graphics but the combat is more reminiscent of the old Punchout games which do that type of gameplay much better.

Furi reminds me a lot of Mike Tyson's Punchout in that it a series of boss fights you need to study and practice to beat. My problem with is that it starts off too difficult and just gets silly from there. Well made game and great idea marred by jumping on the indie trend of making games too difficult that can only be enjoyed by a small niche.

Summary – Furi is an enjoyable yet very challenging game with simplistic gameplay, satisfying visuals, a pretty good soundtrack and a few problems. Overall I would recommend giving it a go if you like difficult but rewarding games

Initially, Furi comes across as a rather simplistic casual arcade game. But as soon as you get to grips with the controls the game reveals itself to be a challenging but rewarding simplistic bullet hell game mixed with basic fighting elements. Furi is an enjoyable experience if you’re into games that like to test your sanity; the addictive fast paced gameplay requires a lot of attention to sound and visual cues as well as being able to dodge a lot and be good at parrying. The controls are very basic (shoot, dodge, parry, attack etc.), this simplicity allows the complexity and difficulty to be channelled through the boss fights.

The boss fights of Furi are the only enemies you encounter; they are all unique and all have some sort of theming that is related to their “world” and back story. My favourite was the first, the jailer had awesome music and an interesting design although he was basic. Each boss is multi-staged and each stage represents a life point, the more lives the boss loses the more aggressive and challenging they become. I enjoyed this mechanic as each stage felt like you were fighting a new enemy, every time I repeated an early stage I had developed a more efficient and speedy way to dispatch a life point, this aspect felt really rewarding and elegant as I felt like I was mastering a puzzle that required good reflexes.

The time in between these fast paced intense battles was filled with dull dumps of world building and exposition; you are tasked with traversing to the next stage while the camera constantly switches perspective. You have no run button, no option to skip these sections and your travelling companion who looks like a man in a rabbit costume (I liked to refer to him as Furi Furry) talks cryptically about the next boss. It took away from the cool badass fights and came across as the game trying too hard to be artsy.

I didn’t beat the game. It was just too difficult, if you’re quite average at games (like me) you’re not going to get very far. Unless you have real dedication or you’re a sadist I doubt you’ll see the ending credits. There is an easier option but I’m not a filthy casual so I didn’t give that a go. I would still recommend Furi; it provides an interesting experience but I would definitely not recommend It for everyone.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Summary- The gameplay is fun and encourages the player to learn as they go. You will run into some rage moments after endless deaths. The story had decent build up but I was always waiting for the one twist or reveal to give it depth but it never came. After credits battle adds a bit though.

    Pros-
    -Fun gameplay
    - good art style
    - great soundtrack
    - after credit fight
    - the bunny head guy

    Cons-
    - at times, lackluster A.I
    - bland story
    - final before credit boss

Furi is another indie darling that tries a bit too hard. It's a game I would describe as having a niche appeal but missed out on having much more than that due to some commitments to core designs. I'll explain below.

One thing Furi does very well is think outside the box a bit and this is evident in the graphics. The scenery as you walk between fights provides a nice respite from the hectic action and I'd describe the graphics as similar to cell-shaded, which is a good thing. The game is a pleasure to look at. The boss fights themselves often become a cluster of lights as they shoot endless waves of lasers at you, but the reprieve between battles stops this from becoming too much.

The gameplay of Furi I expect to be more divisive. I am eternally grateful that there are varying levels of difficulty in the game as I would not have meekly completed it otherwise, so kudos for accessibility rather than a commitment to the 'git gud' cult.

A specific mechanic that irked me a lot in the fighting was that your enemy can become temporarily invulnerable, which strikes me as quite unbalanced. Furthermore, I found that once they hit me, it easily led to a succession of attacks, whereas I was lucky to achieve a combo of any sort.

When I played on higher difficulties I found the game suffered badly from repetition and wore my patience much sooner. The fights just drag on too long. They do try to have each enemy have different 'stages' but this was exhausting for me rather than engaging.

The combat is a tad basic also. The character doesn't develop or learn new skills. I think this would have helped combat any repetition.

This leads me to the story. In Furi you are a silent protagonist guided through a linear path by a strange character with a rabbit's head, giving off Donnie Darko vibes. He is meant to be the mechanic that conveys the story, but is vaguely philosophical and tenuously related waffling didn't do much for me.

If anything the game came across as some pretentious and elitist attempt to gain cult status. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely an audience that will cherish this like a gem, however that audience does not include me.

    *Soundtrack great
    *Graphics okay
*Story is just there to be
*Gameplay is dodging, melee/ranged attacks, parrying

Normal difficulty is challenging but you can play it on easy difficulty to simply enjoy the music

Fury showed the whole industry how boss fights should be done. Not bad for a mobile developer’s debut on “serious” platforms. [09/2016, p.62]

It's a tremendous shame, because the bosses themselves are a finely conceived, smartly designed and varied bunch. [Issue#296, p.121]
