Just perfect, absolutely perfect. The people giving the game bad reviews for it being "too hard" are a bunch of millennial **** Furi's a real game unlike the AAA **** that comes out now.

Este es un gran juego! Hace tiempo que no jugaba algo que me hiciera sentir desafiado, me recordó a los juegos de antaño, que te hacían sentir frustrado, pero que después querías volver a darle una oportunidad. Truly an amazing game! This game only has boss fights and there are 10 of them, which can be done in 2-3 hours, but it's totally worth buying. The boss fights are challenging, fair and exciting. If you like a challenge, buy this game!

One of the best ''boss only'' games out there, it's crazy how absudly good you can get in this game. When you reach that point the game becomes 20 times more fun. The Furier difficulty is the ultimate challenge, it's not merciful. But still, fantastic game.

Fun idea for people that like challenging games, but the fights do drag out a lot, and the scenes between the fights are really quite boring. However, plenty of great ideas, and worth it for people who like a good challenge.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I loved this game. The soundtrack was great and a difficult game. Some people say its to hard but i only died a few times its easy to play once you figure it out. I loved the artstyle and how different each boss fight and level felt. I was hooked all the way through and I even felt sad to kill some of the characters. At the end when you arrive to the "free world" you feel like a monster as you watch the world become corrupted under your feet and look back on the guardians you killed. It was an amazing game. So amazing that im playing through it again on furier. Expand

What makes the game really enjoyable is the gameplay, the entire game is fighting bosses and luckily these bosses are really fun to fight. They are challenging and they all have different attacks which obliges you to have really quick reflexes and they are really hard to kill.

My only con with this game is the walking sections, basically after you beat a boss, you walk for 3 minutes automatically while a character explains to you the story, the world around you and talks about the next boss you will fight. I understand it's their way of telling the story but the game was so creative with its enemies that I wish they would have a more creative way of telling the story.

But other than that it's a damn good game, fantastic gamelay and interesting story, this was one unforgettable experience of 2016 and I highly recommend you buying it.

Do you like boss battles? Do you like guns? Do you like swordplay? Do you like futurism? Do you like bright, vivid, colors splashed on diverse canvases, creating different arena types on each stage? Do you like lasers, energy balls, telekinetic abilities, psychotic women, and the ability to "blink" out of the way of oncoming death? ...and do you then like giving the bastard who tried to murder you a blade to the back of his head?

If you said "yes" to at least half of the above questions, you will LOVE this game.

Furi is an extremely fun, VERY challenging thrill-ride of a game that may be a little heavy on exposition at times, and the level transitions are artificially inflated by these long, drawn-out walking "scenes" (which, in all fairness, the game uses for exposition, character building, and storytelling, though it's a different, semi-strange way of doing so that I've never seen before), but the action is top-notch. TGB did a HELL of a job with this game, and I give them all the credit in the world for taking a brand new IP and making it noteworthy right out of the gate. They've managed to create something where every new level is as diverse as it is familiar, with beautifully rendered, wildly varying backdrops and enemies who each have their own distinct personalities and mechanics which are incredibly unpredictable, surprising, and laugh-inducing the first time one plays through. This is addicting stuff, right here.

Even if you're not a fan of action-/skill-oriented, boss-battles-only type of games, I highly recommend you folks give this a download. It's FREE on PS+ this month, so at the very least, it's something to keep in your queue for a rainy day. For everyone else? This is a monstrously good time, and a thrill-ride unlike any other I've experienced on PS4 (including the Dark Souls franchises, which I loved) with a difficulty curve that (when played on max difficulty) rivals that of the Dark Souls and Bloodbornes of the world. There's nothing more thrilling then having one TINY little blip of health left and killing a boss who'd owned you a few times in a row.

    Furi gets a 9-out-of-10!

Furi is a new kind of game that has rarely been seen before. And although I absolutely LOVE the game I can't say it is for everyone. So how does one describe something that's brand new? By using examples.

Remember the feeling when the One Winged Angel Theme played as Sephiroth drew his blade in Kingdom Hearts 2? Remember the frustration of learning every move, counter and ability just to get that damn cool Keyblade? Furi takes the essence of that feeling and makes the whole game feel like that fight. The blocking when Sephiroth uses his 25 hit combo and the only way to block is by pressing the action command, and you feel like you are drawn in to this fight. You forget the feeling of "this is just a game, I shouldn't be bothered by it" because it is so epic, the fluid movesets of the enemy compared to your own very limited choice of movement, the music that feels like you are up against gods like in God of War and the visuals that don't interfere with the action at hand but still is helping the game feel special and unique.

Now for the bullet-hell. I for one was not a fan of this genre until Dodgeroll released Enter the Gungeon, the fluent dodge-abilities that was easy to learn but really hard to master was so frustrating but also really fun. This game takes a lot of inspiration from the bosses in Enter the Gungeon, but they also take the negatives of the game. There isn't a lot of variety in the game, the bosses shoots orbs and beams to attack you and then try to weigh it up by making the bosses go in for some melee-action. Although it's refreshing compared to EtG they still can't get rid of the feeling that you have to use the same tactics for all the bosses. This is also the problem with Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts but in that game it was just a side-boss.

The game gives also the feeling Dantes Inferno gave, you have this Donnie Darko-inspired bunny character that narrates the story as you continue downwards (to a planet) which is more or less like Virgil. He doesn't contribute to anything except giving you some context to why you are fighting the bosses. Another thing that I picked up with the game is the fact that, similar to Dantes Inferno, the area you see before each boss-fight is giving hints to what you can expect from the fight, which is a cool feature not essential but still should be appreciated.

Finally for the Dark Souls comparison. Although people say it's nothing like the Souls-series I agree to a certain point. This game is more like Shadow of the Colossus and Titanfall in the sense that you only fight bosses but, the difficulty of this game is really souls-like. You are also punished for taking bad decisions and the bosses increase difficulty as you gradually take down their health. But I come back to Sephiroth from Kingdom Hearts 2 more than Dark Souls in this game. The story isn't open like in Dark Souls where you are forced to find items and read the descriptions, but not completely narrated like in Dantes Inferno either.

    Pros:
    + Completely new gameplay.
    + Challenging
    + Stunning visuals
    + Fluid controls
    + Great Soundtrack
+ Appeals to Gungeoneers and Souls-fanatics alike.

    Cons:
    - Repetitive
    - The time between each boss-fight you walk slowly(like that Samurai Jack-scene where he walks and walks forever) and can get easliy bored
    - Story is not that great.
    - Imbalanced
    - Not for everyone. This game will not appeal to people who's not into these kinds of games. I can not stress this enough. If you look for FPS-games like Overwatch, massive open-world RPG's like in Final Fantasy or strategic games like Civilization and XCOM this game is NOT for it. This game is appealing to a niche-audience and therefore should not be a 10/10 game although I personally love this game I can't in good conscience give it full score.

If neither of these genres appeal to you, then you might find extreme difficulty here.

However, you might be surprised; I wasn't a hardcore fan of either genre, but immensely enjoyed this game. It is a very fair game that, while very punishing towards mistakes, is also immensely rewarding to those who learn the very particular rhythms and timings of its precise dodges and parries. Yes, at its worst, Furi can be torturous, dying against a boss during its last phase, only to repeat the entire fight. However, at its best, Furi becomes a strangely meditative dance against its unique boss encounters that is extremely rewarding towards players that learned the patterns and mechanics presented to them; being able to parry a full combo and regaining half of your health is a very gratifying experience that more than makes up for all my previous losses.

Ultimately, the overall experience really depends on the person's patience, physical reflexes, and willingness to learn. As a new player, you absolutely must go into this game with an open mind, as you won't know your own capacities for this game until you try Furi for yourself.

A very strong soundtrack using different artists I am not aware enough to talk about. :P

Gameplay consists of fights and walks, Walks being down time with exposition on You, your past, the next boss and the narrator called The Voice (Bunny man). And fights are action packed fights with shooting, slashing and parrying. You have 3 lives to fight the bosses you come across. Bosses also have lives that vary in length and quantity.

Fighting 9 bosses (+1 as a extra possible fight) with varying style in both aesthetic and combat. Losing a life will cause the boss to regenerate his HP bar in that phase, same with you when you beat 1 life bar with theirs. This causes a very tense yet satisfying tug of war where you try to kill them before they do you and the victor recovers for the next round. A problem you may come across is frustration upon a very close victory and dying, only to start the round once again and behind a life as well.
The reason is to allow you earn every victory, no reviving and cheesing the fight.

Problems that you my notice in the PS4 ver. in particular is frame drops and screen tearing. The tearing i can handle, however frame drops in a game where is takes inspiration from "bullet hell shooters" and key timing parries, it may cause frustrations. I have had it happen about 4 times across 3 playthroughs, so it may be small or I may be lucky.

This game is not for everyone because it takes a patient mind to overcome, With all the ambiguity the story applies and the game play that has so much techniques and style, I LOVE this game. I await when GDQ makes a speed-run of this game and hope you love it as much too.

However, the developers need to realise there is a difference between difficult and annoying. It took me 50-100 tries to beat Ornstein and Smough with a Great Ax in my first playthrough of Dark Souls. I am unafraid of a challenge. However, a great challenge should come with a great feeling of reward, as well as a period of lesser difficulty, to allow you to bask for a period in your awesome accomplishments. In Furi, you receive neither. Your character never improves. Your reward is to fight another boss, and it just becomes harder. The fights also become extremely boring, even during the fight as they are simply too long, and there is not enough change in the scenery or the boss's behaviour to remotely justify the length.

The visual style of the game looks cool occasionally, while other times it just looks ghetto.

The cut scenes are also so boring (and also unstoppable), that I nearly wanted to kill myself. Until I realised I can just turn off the game instead.

Some neat ideas in a game that is fundamentally flawed.

The elephant in the room is the extreme difficulty. Let me say that 'extreme' is an understatement. This game is sadistically difficult. More to the point, it's unnecessarily difficult. The developers seemed to be aware of this, so they included an easy difficulty. The problem there is it's so insulting I refuse to play it. It shortens the game, and, get this -- disables trophies entirely. That, my friends, is the absolute height of condescension.

But it's not just that. A hard game is one thing, but this game is also extremely frustrating. The system whereby you are forced to start the whole phase over again when your life bar gets depleted seems like a deliberate thumb in the eye. Why? Why do this? This does not encourage me, it pushes me away.

The same goes for the duration of each boss phase, which change halfway through. I can get to the second half, but sometimes I then lose my life bar and am forced to start it from the beginning. Well how the hell am I supposed to learn the timing if I barely get a chance at it? This is a completely needless conceit. Worst of all many bosses change the timing of their attacks in later phases.

This is an example of terrible design. Good games let the player build on previous skill. If you're playing something like Dark Souls, for example, the skills you learn early in the game directly translate into the skills you need later on. Here they do not.

I don't score this a 1/10 lightly. There are some aspects that are stellar, like the music and graphic design. But it's so ludicrously hard and the overall game play design is so awful that I would not recommend this to anyone but the most self hating game masochist. Avoid at all costs.

P.S. This game was free for me as a PS+ subscriber. I didn't pay money for it and this is still how I feel about it. What else can I say?

There is nothing fun about hitting a brick wall in your first fight. Give me a chance to digest and integrate the combat mechanic. With other hard games, the impossible gets gradually easier as you get further towards the goal each time, but not here. I died with the first enemy at the same exact HP each time.

This left me with the feeling that the game developer chose prohibitive difficulty in lieu of making it actually enjoyable. Perhaps others will enjoy it, but I will likely never attempt to play it again. Git gud? not interested. I think perhaps that advice applies to the developers instead this time around.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. This game is garbage with a **** combat system. For some bosses it's good, but some bosses are just complete unbalanced garbage. The end phase of the 7th boss, I believe, maybe the 8th, has way too many mechanics to balance, and the camera angles make it incredibly hard to dodge the moves. This game has made me rage more than Dark Souls 3 just due to the **** design. A skill based game shouldn't have you memorize your opponent's moves, it should have you be able to fluidly fight them just through ability alone. Expand

Theres nothing to do in this game beyond this arbitrary boss rush mode of a "story". Theres no enemies to fight. Theres no loot or skills to unlock or gear. You dont even need to manually walk from boss to boss, simply press the X button to auto walk. This too could have been forgiven, if the boss fights were decent.

Unlike Dark Souls bosses which are challenging naturally but can be beaten with skill, experience, gear, and smart builds, Furi bosses are artificially difficult with garbage tropes like auto invincibility, auto super armor, auto dodge, auto parry, auto homing shots, auto stunlocking, auto healing, and auto revival on death 6 times - each time getting stronger and more cheating. I did not make it to the final bosses but based on what Ive seen so far, I assume they unlock more cheats such as auto one hit kill and auto teleport.

Overall I dont expect much for a free game, and Sony PS+ games are notorious for being mediocre, yet this one was so EXCEPTIONALLY TERRIBLE I actually want a refund. Give me my money wasted on a PS4 and subscription back, and the time wasted trying out this failure of a game. 0/10

Although the game may seem hard or almost impossible at first but majority can be dealt with by having good control reflexes; but even without it, the game can be overcome with sufficient knowledge and proper strategy to counter the bosses's patterns because - come on, there is no way you are still oblivious to the boss's fighting style after retrying several times. This game really makes literal the phrase 'learning from your mistakes'; either that or just rage quit :) but then you'll miss out on one of the best games ever created.

Majority of the comments about this game were circled around its godlike difficulty level and the lack of storyline. Unbeknownst to many, the story had actually been spliced up and revealed gradually throughout the entire game and even within the demeanor/conversations between the main character and bosses. For players who were perceptive enough to navigate the hidden twists and turn of words to deduce the story without referring to the internet would receive a sense of achievement greater than just killing bosses which in my opinion would be the real achievement of the game.

I found the game design to be excellent. You fight many bosses, each with their own unique attacks which forces you to adapt. The trick to defeating the bosses is LEARNING THEM and PRACTICE. After a good few tries you will have memorised their attacks and will know at what points to attack, giving you the knowledge and power to defeat them. Each boss has many different phases with each presenting a new challenge and once you master even just a single phase you feel incredibly powerful. I also felt the hardest difficulty, 'Furier' was well designed as instead of just giving the enemy more health and you less which would of been pretty cheap and unfair, the game actually changes the boss's attacks, giving new projectiles you have to dodge, faster melee attacks and and quicker reaction times therefore making you remaster each boss all over again. It is quite a short game lasting only from around 6-10 hrs on your first run and there isn't anything much to do after beating the story aside from unlocking trophies which requires replaying the game in speedrun mode, furier difficulty and gaining s-ranks which is great if you enjoy the game like me and really makes you fully master the game. The only downside to the game is that along the journey you will end up screaming and cursing at your TV, feeling that it is impossible to progress, and that you may want to give up, but if you persevere you will feel nothing but good about yourself as each challenge overcome is a victory. You should really try this game if you like being pushed and is a perfect game to master. Expand

A few things to note, the story actually is pretty cool, it is simple and its mindless at times but the voice acting is spot on and the clues and hints start to make sense as you play through it.

One thing in Furi i found confusing was saving, when you try to quit it says you will lose progress, but don't worry it saves after every boss fight, you will see the rabbit head glowing in the bottom right hand corner.

I loved Furi. Even when I was getting beaten down repeatedly I enjoyed the challenge aspect. The controls are responsive (Parry takes some time to get used to because it works slightly differently than other games, but once you do it's excellent). The bosses are creative and so much more than higher damage/higher health variants. When playing this game you do feel like a badass, without getting bogged down by the RPG elements you may see in Bloodborne/Dark Souls. It's pure action and it's you and your reflexes. The graphics are solid and creative. The characters themselves look alright when up close, but the game looks beautiful from the top down.

What stops this game from getting a 10:
    1. Final phases are really cheap with some bosses, "The Burst" especially. A lot of bosses are extremely fun but lead to a pure bullet hell final phase. Which is fine but in some circumstances the difficulty difference between the first 3-5 phases and the final phase is insane. This is mainly a complaint of "The Burst" but to a lesser extent with "The Song".
    2. My first point would be invalid if not for the fact that, progression in the game has no correlation with boss difficulty. I know you get better through the game but it feels like the hardest bosses are randomly assigned. This is all subjective, as you will get better at the game, but you will feel like certain bosses have difficulty spikes not because of what they're throwing at you but rather "cheapness".
    3. The optional boss is just completely trash design. Feels like a half baked unbalanced idea which forsakes the great and responsive controls for new gimmick controls. Feels like you're playing a new but crap game. This boss is significant to the story, and will tarnish your experience.

All in all, I don't regret playing this game, I loved it. If the bad parts were cut out I would give it a 10.

The graphics are simply amazing, the game has a style that OOZES from every single shot of the game. The colors are bright and in your face, the bosses are memorable and varied, the same as the stages you fight them on.

Unfortunately, the story is rather uninteresting for a long time and I would easily call it the weakest part of the game. Between bosses you walk in a straight line (sometimes it curves) to the next boss while another character dumps exposition about things you don't understand. Frankly, I wish the game would just auto walk me because holding the stick forward for two minutes as my guy practically crawls forward makes my brain go numb.

Honestly, pick the game up if you're interested in learning the specific patterns of a handful of distinct bosses and putting your skills to the test in a game that won't hold your hand and has less newbie padding than Dark Souls (at least you can grind in Dark Souls.) If you're the kind of guy that complains about losing because "That's not fair!" or "How could I have known that!?" then don't even bother with Furi and go back to something more casual.

The controls are tight and responsive, but they do have a learning curve to them, which is where most people will get mad and quit. The visuals are sheer eye candy, but the story is a complete drag. The music is fitting to the sights and fights. All in all, Furi is gaming in its purest form. It's not about the story or the graphics, it's about solid controls and harsh but fair challenges that push the limits of your skills and demand you adjust your strategy or get wrecked. Furi is pure gameplay, and it does it well.

Furi reminds me a lot of Mike Tyson's Punchout in that it a series of boss fights you need to study and practice to beat. My problem with is that it starts off too difficult and just gets silly from there. Well made game and great idea marred by jumping on the indie trend of making games too difficult that can only be enjoyed by a small niche.

Reviewers gave claimed this game is unfairly brutal and difficult in the wrong way. I disagree. There are certainly parts of the main game that would give off that impression (For me only two in particular. You'll know the ones I'm talking about.), but if you have the patience and dedication, you WILL get it down. It may seem tedious to play back up to where you were defeated, but the more you die at that part, the better you get at the rest of the boss fight leading up to it, which is very satisfying. And extremely satisfying when you finally nail that part that's giving you trouble. But again, if you do not enjoy the experience of learning and getting a boss fight down, you will not like this game. Because that's what it is. Aside from scenic walking sections from boss to boss that progress the narrative, this game is purely boss fights. And given that it's only boss fights, they're long, challenging, and will take you a while. But each boss is unique and challenging in a different way. No two bosses, or areas you fight them in are similar to another. Each is an experience. And that's what makes this game great in my eyes. But again, if you don't find that type of game as satisfying as I do, you won't like this game. Story wise, there's so cool things that are done. But the story is told in a way that slowly clues you into what's going on, and only really gives you an explanation once you beat the game. So if story would be some sort of redemption for you, keep in mind that story is your reward for completing these challenging fights, which I find fantastic, but might not sit well with others.

This review may sound mixed, but it's not. I truly enjoy this game MYSELF. It's why I gave it a 9. I'm just providing perspective and caution for EVERYONE who is thinking about playing Furi. There are things that make Furi great. But those things aren't things that everyone enjoys.

Lots of room for improvement through a fast paced combat system, speedrun mode and challenges and no hit challenges are all things that greatly add to my enjoyment of this game. The story is both pretty abstract but also fairly clear by the end which was a nice touch I wasn't expecting, most indie games with abstract story tend to try to keep it abstract so people keep talking about it but Furi actually does a decent job of answering most questions the player asks while going from boss to boss.

I have experienced a few bugs and recorded them for posterity, however I have probably put about 40-50 hours into this game so far so that's not a bad track record at all. One negative would be the abysmal tank controls from boss fight to boss fight when walking through some amazing landscapes which can be fixed by pressing X and setting your character to auto walk, however this only makes you realize just how long some of these slow walking segments can be. It bugged me slightly at times and is part of the reason why some of my friends don't like it as much as I do, but at least the music and the visuals are nice.

Gameplay is smooth most of the time, though it takes quite a bit of time to learn how to control your dash distance well. It follows similar logic to punishing mechanics in fighting games and consistent damage in bullethells, you can shoot most bosses as they launch their attacks at you and dash in to punish them with melee attacks after they finish their own attacks in the first phase of the stage, then get locked into a close range combat session for the second phase of the stage focused around timed blocks and attacking, as well as a charge slash to exploit opponent's openings and a risk-reward boost slash that amps up your next hit to deal huge amounts of damage as long as you don't get hit before you land the attack. Each boss after the first boss plays with these concepts a bit so during your first run you have to be flexible. This boss flies off the edge of the map for some of their attacks, not allowing you to punish with melee and focus on shooting. This boss will dodge your all of your shots and launch extra attacks when you shoot at them while they are trying to melee you, forcing you to focus more on melee instead of shooting and etc.

Overall I'm having a blast with this game and though I'm not usually the speedrun type I'm having fun challenging myself in this game, only one trophy away from the platinum. It's not a game for casual pick up and have fun, the third boss of the game will make that perfectly clear, but if you want a challenging and engaging boss rush game with a great soundtrack, interesting fights and cool character designs (mostly), then give it a try.

Edit; I see a lot of people complaining about the easier difficulty and calling it "insulting"...these people obviously have no idea what the easier difficulty is meant for in this game. All it does is give you more lives, so you have more time to get used to each phase of the fights and the combat system before you head back into Furi to actual beat the game. It's inclusion shouldn't be seen as condescending, quite the opposite. It's a obvious sign that the developer knows how hard it's game is and wants to offer tools to get better at it without having to restart the fight over and over again when you run out of your limited lives.

Anyway you have to really time all your moves perfectly, dodging and blocking, it gets really intense, and at times theirs plasma flying everywhere. but once you master the gameplay you'll feel like a true bad ass taking down a boss on harder difficulty. Also the graphics look really nice, it's a very unique art style, and the music is quite amazing as well, also the voice acting is great, although you play as a silent protagonist, the other characters have top notch voices. My flaws with this game is that it's just boss fights, like why can't their be weaker enemies you fight to make your way up to a boss, like God of war or other great games. Also their is really no story, your just in a high security prison and now you need to break out. THATS IT. But yeah the gameplay is **** awesome I do reccomend just wish it was longer, and had a story. Expand

Anyway, furi is a very interesting, funny game. The design of the characters and the music (a bit similar to hotline Miami) is amazing. Gameplay is kind of basic in terms on the amount of moves you have but it is quite well designed as it doesn’t feel limited or simple, I guess that’s probably because the game is kind of hard. Said that, the gameplay is quite fast and it relies a lot on you having decent reflexes, this isn’t a bad thing but it might be a problem for some people since it is not only about memorising boss patterns. I also think it is worth mentioning the story, although it is not amazing it has a couple of moment where you’ll say “mmm interesting”, so I think it gives you a nice excuse to want to progress here rather than just say “ok, let’s move to the next boss fight”. On the bad side, the graphics feel a bit strange sometimes, not bad, but strange.

Summarising, this is a fast paced, hard game and it only has boss fights, not small fighting or platforming. It has a nice little story and amazing character-fight design and OST. If you like fast paced games with a bit of melee and twin stick action and a good challenge, give it a try it won’t disappoint you. On the other hand if you don’t like hard games where you’ll potentially have a retry the same battle a few times, spend your money somewhere else 

After you complete the game on Furi, you unlock the Furier difficulty, which adds a variety of new abilities performed by the Bosses, making it more difficult, the Furier difficulty does it right, the Bosses don't get more tedious and no artificial difficulty is added by which some other games do through simply increasing boss health & damage, this provides yet more experience in the game and adds replay value, making it more fun to break your previous records and listen to the score once again.

My only gripe with the game is how short it is, it would've been amazing if they had continuously added new Bosses to the game, or have worked on more of them.

    Great game, definitely recommend it.

Its stylized cel-shaded graphics are so low-poly and textures are so flat that it feels as if the game was developed in the early PS2 era. There is also plenty of screen tearing during some boss fights (particularly on stages where the camera moves a lot, such as The Burst boss), and story cut scenes along with screen tearing feature severe frame rate drops for no reason. Finally, the game is really short, maybe you 'll get 3 or 4 hours of gameplay if you are a newbie in the genre and die a lot.

Gem, because it is a great hack n' slash and bullet hell hybrid. You can attack either with a sword or a gun, dodge/teleport, and parry (no static block). Gameplay is simple enough as there are no crazy Devil May Cry-like combos to memorize, but the key is to parry enemy moves and counter attack, instead of mindlessly mash buttons. Boss fights are very good and varied, with many phases as you slowly deplete the enemies' health bars. The secret end boss is really difficult and will make you toss the gamepad to the TV :D Soundtrack is great, and the cel shaded graphical art style is cool, too (but some flat textures ruin it).

All in all, an indie game with AAA ambitions and quality, but it lacks some polish and a bit more of content. I highly recommend it to gamers who enjoy hack n' slashers, especially the difficult ones.

Summary – Furi is an enjoyable yet very challenging game with simplistic gameplay, satisfying visuals, a pretty good soundtrack and a few problems. Overall I would recommend giving it a go if you like difficult but rewarding games

Initially, Furi comes across as a rather simplistic casual arcade game. But as soon as you get to grips with the controls the game reveals itself to be a challenging but rewarding simplistic bullet hell game mixed with basic fighting elements. Furi is an enjoyable experience if you’re into games that like to test your sanity; the addictive fast paced gameplay requires a lot of attention to sound and visual cues as well as being able to dodge a lot and be good at parrying. The controls are very basic (shoot, dodge, parry, attack etc.), this simplicity allows the complexity and difficulty to be channelled through the boss fights.

The boss fights of Furi are the only enemies you encounter; they are all unique and all have some sort of theming that is related to their “world” and back story. My favourite was the first, the jailer had awesome music and an interesting design although he was basic. Each boss is multi-staged and each stage represents a life point, the more lives the boss loses the more aggressive and challenging they become. I enjoyed this mechanic as each stage felt like you were fighting a new enemy, every time I repeated an early stage I had developed a more efficient and speedy way to dispatch a life point, this aspect felt really rewarding and elegant as I felt like I was mastering a puzzle that required good reflexes.

The time in between these fast paced intense battles was filled with dull dumps of world building and exposition; you are tasked with traversing to the next stage while the camera constantly switches perspective. You have no run button, no option to skip these sections and your travelling companion who looks like a man in a rabbit costume (I liked to refer to him as Furi Furry) talks cryptically about the next boss. It took away from the cool badass fights and came across as the game trying too hard to be artsy.

I didn’t beat the game. It was just too difficult, if you’re quite average at games (like me) you’re not going to get very far. Unless you have real dedication or you’re a sadist I doubt you’ll see the ending credits. There is an easier option but I’m not a filthy casual so I didn’t give that a go. I would still recommend Furi; it provides an interesting experience but I would definitely not recommend It for everyone.

Unlike the Dark Souls series, Furi's difficulty kicks your ass, but with each failure you actually feel like you're learning about the enemy and with just a few tries you beat them and are elated.

There are a couple problems with the game, however.

The downtime between fights is pretty much just a slow walking simulator with the camera changing angles constantly and unless you have auto-walk on (there are zero indicators telling you how to use/enable or that there even is an auto-walk) or are only moving in a straight line, you'll find yourself turning 180 degrees and switching the camera back sometimes. When you just want to get to the next fight, the 5 minutes of walking between the bosses is super tedious.

The story, though, is quite interesting, even if the guy that does all the talking tells you that you're not alone, yet never helps you in combat.

The developer of this game definitely seems like the type of player that excels at this type of game and then shoves their success in the faces of those that aren't so good, or just not AS good. The type that uses the catchphrase "git gud". The game has an "easy" difficulty that when selected fully disables all achievements/trophies, leaves the name of the game mode on the screen at all times to let you know that you are inferior, and, really, isn't all that much easier. They definitely don't want you playing on that difficulty level and it doesn't really make sense why they have it in the game at all.

There is a lag on some of your actions (mainly the dash) that can be extremely frustrating when you try to dash at the last minute, but it doesn't work due to having to wait a 4th or 5th of a second after hitting the button/key to actually dash. I'm pretty sure this is by design to up the difficulty, but it feels more like the controls are just unresponsive and that's really bad for a fast-paced platformer like Furi.

Overall, I enjoy the game. I had multiple mini-rage quits but always came back with a fire in my belly, knowing that I can overcome my failures and move on. I enjoyed the story, but hated the walking simulator and wished the controls were more responsive. The bosses were unique and challenging, but due to the unresponsive controls, I wasn't able to fully appreciate them and their abilities.

What a novel concept a game that hides the fact that you are The Boss, Every character you face is challenging you to fight better, given upgrades, bonuses, power-ups that would normally be given to the player, are given to the Challengers.

Can you Focus? Do you notice the imperceptible details of your opponents?
Do you have Patience? Do you wait for the right moments?
Can you Evolve? Do you rise to new challenges?
Are you Effective? Do you use everything at your disposal to it's limit?
Can you Endure? Do you have what it takes to reach the pinnacle of your existence?

    But is it worth it?

It has a story, but you must decide for yourself what it means in the context of who you are. You must question yourself, as the player, if this is worth what is asked of you. You are merely being strung along, being given a reason to fight, getting worked up, being primed never knowing if what your being told is real.

You beat it, you pushed yourself to the limit of your skill. But what was the real battle that was fought... how did this fight change you? How do you know for sure? Who were you really fighting? What was it all about?

This game does not hold your hand, you must decide for yourself," What you Fight for."

It just gave you the format you needed to take every step, physical, mental, and emotional, to realize the Big Picture in your own context.

This game will change you, but only if you are willing to take the challenge.

Story: The story is simplistic until near the end with the big twist but that's a good thing. You play as a sword and gun wielding stranger that has one goal in mind "The jailer is the key, kill him and you will be free" You followed by a mysterious person dressed as a rabbit who wants the same as you. I won't ruin the plot twist here but its unexpected and makes every conversation during your battles make sense.

Gameplay: This is where this game shines. When in battle you have two different play styles. Shooting with your gun in twin stick fashion and fast pace sword play. Both are intense, fast and increasingly difficult. The controls are precise so if you mess up, it is completely your fault but once you have it down, you feel like your own boss, you feel like a total bad ass. The only part I had problems with was the walking sections. The environments are beautiful but the camera moves so much while walking that I end up getting confused what direction on the left stick to go with. Lucky this is fixed by clicking X, which will do these part automatically.

Soundtrack: I love it. Some are intense while other have a great techno beat and pace that complement the neon visuals. Not much else to say, its a great fit for the fast action on screen.

Conclusion: This game surprises me how it came out of nowhere and came from a developer that has not made any console games before. This game is the most fun I have had in a while. It made me feel so satisfied when I perfectly hit every strike against my opponent and escape danger with a quick dart across the screen. The difficult may turn some people off but I highly recommend checking this one out. Its available on Steam and PS4 for 24.99 and is free for Playstation Plus Members this month

I thoroughly enjoyed this game. But I must admit it isn't for everyone.

First of all I must acknowledge that this isn't the most impressive looking game on the PS4.

One could argue that the animé art style is simplistic, but even accounting for that, I believe this game could look better if more resources and time were put into the visuals. But this is a low budget game, so I will cut it some slack.

In the audio department, this game ranks right up there with the some of the best video game soundtracks I have ever come across. Its techno beats which change and become more intense as you go through the phases of battle are superb. It really augments the high octane action of this game.

There is a very simplistic story to follow, but it is easily the weakest aspect of the game. The slight twist at the ending was a welcome surprise for me, but that twist couldn’t redeem this game from a storytelling point of view.

The true thrill of this game is in the gameplay department. It follows the “Boss Rush” formula which pits you against boss after boss with only the short story/narrative sequences filling in the transition between boss arenas. It is a simple formula, but sometimes simplicity is best.

You use the left joystick to move around and the right joystick shoots small projectiles in the direction pointed. A larger charged projectile can accessed by pressing R1. You then have a melee (sword) attack button, a dash button and a block/parry button. The sword attack can be charged for more damage and the dash can be charged to cover more distance. These different actions are then woven into the boss fights forcing you to use every move in your arsenal in order to progress.

The bosses are unique individuals whose goal is to stop you at all costs. There are multiple phases that you go through in each battle. Phases range from 4 to 6 per boss. Each time the HP of the boss runs out, you proceed unto the next phase which replenishes your HP as well as the boss’ HP. The bosses gain additional moves and patterns with each phase. The final phase is always a “bullet hell” sequence which I wasn’t particularly fond of in the beginning, but learnt to enjoy as I continued playing.

Due to the stylish attacks and mini cut scenes during battles, this game feels like you are starring in your very own Japanese animé. You slash, shoot, dash, and parry as the bosses desperately try to stop you. This is the definition of a white knuckle, action video game.

    But…

This game is hard. Brutally hard.

You have three lives, but these bosses will chew through each and every one in the most unforgiving manner. This is because this game will throw new patterns and attacks at you that simply cannot be reacted to without you learning them beforehand.

This creates a trial and error grind that many gamers do not have the patience to endure. The game designers knew this and included an easy mode, but this mode has no rewards. You must complete the normal mode in order to get the real rewards and ending.

The main negative I have from a gameplay point of view is the relatively long delay between when the dash button is pressed and when your character dashes on screen. An inherent delay from having a “dash on release” property (in order to have a charged dash) is expected, but I believe the delay is so big, it requires you to memorize the incoming attacks instead of dashing on reaction. But this may have been a design choice of the developers to maintain difficulty.

All in all, I enjoyed this game. I am the kind of gamer who doesn’t like to lose, and when a game tries to beat me into a corner, I keep fighting back until I prevail. I take pleasure in these victories. But I fully understand that these difficult grinds are not for everyone. You will need patience, skill and even a bit of luck with this game. But it is a thrilling ride all the way.

One thing Furi does very well is think outside the box a bit and this is evident in the graphics. The scenery as you walk between fights provides a nice respite from the hectic action and I'd describe the graphics as similar to cell-shaded, which is a good thing. The game is a pleasure to look at. The boss fights themselves often become a cluster of lights as they shoot endless waves of lasers at you, but the reprieve between battles stops this from becoming too much.

The gameplay of Furi I expect to be more divisive. I am eternally grateful that there are varying levels of difficulty in the game as I would not have meekly completed it otherwise, so kudos for accessibility rather than a commitment to the 'git gud' cult.

A specific mechanic that irked me a lot in the fighting was that your enemy can become temporarily invulnerable, which strikes me as quite unbalanced. Furthermore, I found that once they hit me, it easily led to a succession of attacks, whereas I was lucky to achieve a combo of any sort.

When I played on higher difficulties I found the game suffered badly from repetition and wore my patience much sooner. The fights just drag on too long. They do try to have each enemy have different 'stages' but this was exhausting for me rather than engaging.

The combat is a tad basic also. The character doesn't develop or learn new skills. I think this would have helped combat any repetition.

This leads me to the story. In Furi you are a silent protagonist guided through a linear path by a strange character with a rabbit's head, giving off Donnie Darko vibes. He is meant to be the mechanic that conveys the story, but is vaguely philosophical and tenuously related waffling didn't do much for me.

If anything the game came across as some pretentious and elitist attempt to gain cult status. Don't get me wrong, there is definitely an audience that will cherish this like a gem, however that audience does not include me.

These are the only actions you get at the start, and they’re the only actions you’ll have at the end, with the exception of the optional final boss, which replaces your charged shot with a laser. These mechanics are easy to grasp, yet very demanding to fully master. That also goes for the game’s 10 challenging bosses, each with multiple phases that introduce new attacks to keep the battle intense and satisfying. The bosses are distinct, and a helluva lot of fun, thanks to the fact that no two bosses are the same. In one battle, you’ll avoid waves of bullets while being shot at with a sniper rifle. In another, you’ll engage in a melee only duel between another skilled fighter. It kept me on the edge of my seat throughout the duration of my roughly 4 hour playthrough. However, don’t think that Furi is completely unfair, as there are a few systems that keep the playing field (mostly) fair. For instance, every attack you parry restores a small bit of health, completing a phase of a boss fight restores all of your health, and you have 3 tries to get through a phase before you have to restart the whole fight. These systems help alleviate any feelings that the game was too bias in the favor of the bosses, and kept each fight fair, but still challenging.

After my first time through Furi, I had died a bunch, and took a ton of hits from all the bosses, including the optional final one. However, on my second playthrough, I was hit less than 100 times, never died once, and finished the game in under 2 hours. I absolutely love the feeling of personal progression, not only because being a badass is a reward on it’s own, but knowing that I’ve had the same tools since the beginning truly solidifies a feeling of improvement, unlike other games, where leveling up increases your attack damage, damage resistance, etc. While those systems aren’t bad, Furi’s progression system is a breath of fresh air, as it’s solely tied to you. Not feeling challenged enough? Got all the S Ranks on Furi difficulty? Well, try your luck on the games harder difficulty, Furier, as the bosses attacks are reworked, faster, and harder to dodge. There’s no damage increase or health decrease on this difficulty, which is quite unique, compared to other games’ harder difficulties, where you die in 1 hit, and your enemies can take 1000 hits before hitting half health. (Yes, I’m looking at you, Call of Duty: Black Ops 3’s Realistic Mode)!

My only problems with Furi are a few bugs that hindered a good run, such as getting stuck on the environment, and not properly loading into the fight. However, I do wish that Furi gave you the ability to practice a certain phase of a boss fight that you’re having trouble on, instead of having to go through the whole boss fight again, just to reach the trouble spot. This problem popped up in my head twice, both trouble spots being in the final phase. Having to go through the whole fight over again just to reach the trouble spot can become tedious after a while, and Furi will temporarily lose its appeal. However, once I persevered past the trouble spot, those feelings immediately went away.

Furi is a unique game, meshing two fun genres of combat with a boss rush format to create a challenging, adrenaline-pumping experience. While this game certainly won’t be for everyone, due to the game’s high-end difficulty, it will not disappoint those who commit to becoming a better fighter.

If you like adrenaline rushes and challenging but fair gameplay, this is a must buy. This game does not hold your hand, do not expect to complete it unless you plan on giving the game a fair shake. But if you give it your all, what you will get is one of the best experiences on modern gaming platforms.

The content of this game is a series of fantastic boss battles. Nothing more, nothing less. Each boss you face demands and increasing amount of mastery of the controls until you will find yourself breezing through attack patterns that gave you many game overs at the beginning. On a second playthrough you will surprised at how you breeze through the game.

The battles can look like they're ripped straight out of an action tv show, with the player switching back and forth between intense bullet hell shooting and fast melee and parrying combat. The controls are not overly complex like in an action game, but the game demands you switch back and forth fast between these two styles of play, which makes for a really exciting experience. The music, which is provided by various big artists in the electronic music scene such as Carpenter Brut and The Toxic Avenger. These fast music tracks are the fire motivating the player to complete these difficult boss battles. The music makes you feel like you can do anything, which certainly helps on the brutal last phase on certain fights.

There are segments between fights where you walk to the next boss as a sort of build-up and cool-down. These go on a little long, but luckily there is a speedrun mode which lets you play just the fights back to back. Although for the full experience, definitely play through the story.

There is also an expanded difficulty for those who have completed the game. This mode gives bosses entirely new attack patterns, so it is essentially doubling the content for those who are up to the challenge. I thought I'd never be skilled enough to play this mode, but as I replayed the game a few times I found that I got much, much better at it. You are capable of a lot more than you think. Even if you think the regular difficulty is too hard, with patience and persistence you can beat the game, and it is worth it.

Do not expect God of War level graphics, but expect a fantastic boss rush game that you can sink your teeth into. Furi is a better as a boss rush game than God of War is as an action game. If you're looking to play a twitch reflex game that rewards skill, frankly, Furi is favorable to God of War in that respect.

Verdict: Easy Recommendation for Action Fans

Feels great to play. Very challenging, but feels fair. Great style (especially the soundtrack). A game where the developers had limited resources and spent their money well.

One of the hardest games I've finished. Kickass soundtrack. Really tests your skills and patience.

A simple but really enjoyable game, everyone should try. It’s a hard game though.

Furi is a 2016 fast-paced game, combining elements of twin-stick shooters, bullet hell, and third-person action games. The player is challenged in one-on-one arena boss fights getting progressively harder on the way!

A pretty hard game for sure, but a very rewarding one.

The combat itself is a bit lacklustre when compared to the entries action games have had over the years (Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, God Hand), but the bosses are fantastic, and the soundtrack is INCREDIBLE. I really do mean it when I say that Furi has some of the best music I've heard in a game in a long time. That's going to be

That's going to be subjective of course, but I thought I would mention it.

The combat is strictly 2-D, but that's not a bad thing because it solves the biggest issue with most action games: the camera. Where the combat does fall apart is the parrying. There's a green flash, you parry it, you get some health back. You never have to really register the attack animations, you just reflexively hit the parry button. It's not a bad thing really, but I thought it dragged down the combat at least a bit. There are some other issues with hitboxes and your dash length, but those are minor and don't occur very often. Again, the combat itself is quite simple when compared to many other action titles, but the bosses more than make up for it.

The story is pretty much a non-element, so I wish they had got rid of the stupid walking sections between bosses. Yeah, downtime is important, but I wish you could skip them somehow. This won't annoy a lot of people, but it hurts the game replay value a lot.

Furi is a boss rush with great bosses. That's pretty much all that matters. The other issues exist, but Furi is a 5 hour game, and I enjoyed each one of them. If you want a solid action game with hard bosses, get Furi.

Furi is a fantastic game for anyone interested in challenging combat games. It focuses on creating a deeply satisfying game where you are forced to master the combat system until you are unstoppable, and tells an interesting story along the way.

Please stop reading these crap reviews. We all agree the game is not perfect. BUT, if you are ready for a challenge (it's not that hard if you're not a casual player) you'll like this game, it can last from 2 hours to 8, it depends on you. Try it, you'll not regret it.

I can't say a bad thing about this game, it has everything I could want. Phenomenal soundtrack, great story with themes from Greek mythology, and quotes/moments that gave me enough chills to go back through and play this game again and again. I'd recommend this game to anyone and everyone, even if it's not for everyone. Fantastic.

Fury showed the whole industry how boss fights should be done. Not bad for a mobile developer’s debut on “serious” platforms. [09/2016, p.62]

It's a tremendous shame, because the bosses themselves are a finely conceived, smartly designed and varied bunch. [Issue#296, p.121]
