While the latest fix did manage to make matchmaking much quicker, the gameplay boils down to "same **** different match" - a lack of variety, if you will. Until there is content to convince me to come back to this game, I'm done with it.

Note: Original review is based on the game state as of June 3, 2017.

To state it simply, this game is very much a hot mess.

    The good

When one is actually able to get past the (still) tremendously long wait times to join a game session and actually play a round (or hopefully more), the game itself is actually good. The game itself is a 1 vs. everyone else, where the one is Jason and everyone else plays as the camp counselors. Many of the counselors are in the game, each with their own stats that affect survivability. The same goes with Jason, having different versions from some of the movies and each version having their own stats and weapon.

There are currently only three maps, but each one is faithfully recreated from the movies. The counselors move in and out of the cabins by either the doors or windows, and can lock or barricade a door to slow Jason down. Jason can only enter through the doors, but can smash down doors that are locked or blocked. This requires several hits and Jason plods through the hit sequences.

Whether you end up as Jason or as a counselor determines how you will win. As Jason, kill the counselors, and be as creative or straightforward as you want - and use your Character Points to unlock more kills. As the counselors, survive by any means necessary - escape by car or boat, call the sheriff and escape by meeting up with them, or try to kill Jason (which requires a lot of coordination with the other counselor players). The counselors can use their Character Points to roll for perks that can be applied. Each perk has a positive and negative trait that affects some aspect of your character's stats as long as that perk is assigned to that particular counselor.

    The bad

This is where the game craps the bed. There are a lot of issues that have been outstanding since launch. For the first few weeks, there were login errors that were due to "the database not being able to handle the influx of players that were playing the game" (according to the devs, they only planned for ~30k players and they ended up having about 75k players trying to log on to play). The dreaded Cannot Log In banner was the result. A later update from the devs stated that they were able to scale up the database system, but some of the player data was corrupted and required manual interventions to fix it for the players affected. This is an example of piss-poor guestimation used by devs and publishers to determine certain online feature systems in which a bad guess costs them.

The most egregious issues still standing are lag and inability to join game sessions. This breaks down to two items - server bandwidth capacity and server capacity, respectively. There is nothing like waiting 15+ minutes to try and join a game session just to either keep waiting or something else happens and you get kicked back to the menus. I've been in a party with a friend trying to join a game and either we sit and wait forever, or one or both of us are unable to join the game session we were launching in to. FIX THIS ALREADY!!!

And LAG, sweet Jesus the lag. The lag can be bad to the point of near game breaking. In one of the games I was actually able to play, I was Jason and on two occasions in the same match I went to grab a counselor (and did) but couldn't perform a kill. I was stuck grabbing the counselor and the only way to get unstuck was to walk in to the lake to force a different animation (I was fortunate to be close to the lake). TWICE this happened!

If you miraculously manage to get in to a game session, and the host leaves the game, you get kicked back to the main menus. Why does this not look for a new host from the list of other players in the session? This is not a new function to multiplayer games, so join the party already!

    The ugly

It's become apparent that the devs bit of a lot more than they could chew, and now they are desperately attempting to fix their mess to appease the gamers to prevent them from abandoning ship. The constant social media messages of "We're fixing it" doesn't cut it. I get it, game development is hard, but if you aren't up to the task then don't bother.

    Verdict

Until the developers truly fix the issues with this broken game, avoid this travesty.

Let me just say that the game had potential and the idea was a great idea but it fell short by a gargantuan amount.
I don't care how many patches they've implemented.. games shouldn't need that many from the get go.
The game is utter trash. The servers suck ass, there's very few maps, the bugs are plenty, people can't play the game correctly and have to use party mics to tell locations

And now they are starting to charge for DLC that should be free with the **** we've had to sit through.

I'll NEVER buy another game from this ****fest company and definitely will warn friends about them.

I recently played a very similar game called Dead by Daylight, which isn’t very good, and unfortunately neither is this. When playing as one of the councillors most of your time will be spent wandering around the map searching drawers with the hope of finding items that’ll aid your escape. Occasionally you’ll run into Jason but these encounters, while tense to began with, quickly fall into a repetitive pattern. Should you die you’ll have to sit and watch the rest of the game, which could be 15 minutes or more, if you want the maximum XP reward. Playing as Jason, which you won’t get to do often in public games, is a little more fun but even then you’ll spend the majority of your time wandering around by yourself trying to find everyone. You do have a selection of special powers to assist in this search but they don’t do much to prevent the tedium of the long, lonely treks.

As with many games of this ilk I guess there could be some fun to be had with a group of mates but as a game Friday the 13th is a disappointment.

We're talking 15 minute matches sometimes. Whereas in Dead by Daylight the matches are quick and you get exp right away. You can't even by cosmetic items in Friday the 13 with an in game currency! On paper, this is one of the greatest game ever adapted from a movie or franchise. It would be awesome really if another company was in charge of this. Unfortunately for us Gun Media is probably the worst video game company ever, barely unprofessional and don't care about how broken the game is.
Full of glitch and with a toxic community for the most part, the game is barely unplayable.

Full of glitch and with a toxic community for the most part, the game is barely unplayable. When you can finally find a party and you'll not be stopped by technical issues, you found only morons trolls who have fun by doing crap all the party. But until the recent update this was still possible to play or at least expected to play. Now Gun Media have simply pulled out most of the bandwidth from Ps4 users to give it to their customers on Nintendo Switch. That's totally inappropriate and is a real bull**it since the game is initially intended to be a Playstation / PC / Xbox game not a Switch one that only emerge recently.
The game is basically dead now both on Steam and Xbox and will be soon receive the same treatment on PS4.
Additionally the Switch version is so ugly and have the same technical issues as the real game versions.
The devs are also lying by some statements as they can't add anymore new promised content due to the legal issues between copyrights olders and writer from the first movie. The fact is copyrights older have clearly stated that they don't want to stop these updates and these cancelled updates are in no way associated to the legal issues. So the devs are just too lazy to add the promised content to original users and focusing on the new cow cash from Switch. They even give new created content to Nintendo customers instead of delivering what they promised.
This kind of company must not be supported, don't be fooled by these scammers by avoiding this game. This is really sad since without this awful behavior the game would be a hit.

The few times I could find a lobby, which took me an average time of 10 minutes, I experienced a couple of disconnects, several glitches and partly game breaking bugs. Frustrating. Besides that you have to consider that the amount of content is very low (3 Maps, same beginning cut scene and same ending cut scene all over). So this game is far from finished and when you can´t even convince with content it should at least run flawless. I mean it´s pretty much delivered like one of these Ubi Soft titles, but seriously at least they do look good. The first game ever, I consider about getting my money back. Don´t get me wrong I see potential here but realization is more than sloppy. The price tag is very ambitious with 40€ and the game definitely can´t live up to that. Even if they fix the bugs, I can´t see more than a 15-20€ game here. But bottom line (once again), don´t release unfinished games! I doubt that this game can recover from a really bad first impression...

    UPDATE:
After two weeks not much changed here. In fact my experience was even worse. Severeal disconnects during the games, even longer times to find a lobby, no patch so far. Sorry, but the time i could actually play the game was so rare that I finally dropped out. Maybe with future updates the game becomes fun to play if it´s not dead by then but it is absolutely not worth the price.

I am not rating this based on the few glitches that will be fixed. I am sad because there is the framework of a good game but because of bad decisions made by the creators I am giving this a score of 4.
The game mechanics are flawed and unbalanced: 1. God frames are when a character does an animation in which they cannot be damaged. So if Jason starts a long animation where they pick someone up you cannot damage Jason. 2. Weapon animations are too slow and unresponsive meaning that a player counselor is unable to hit Jason when needed. This could be balanced by making characters with higher strength attack quicker and keeping low stenght characters this way. 3. Because there are so few ways to escape it makes it so that what you do becomes predictable making the game less fun. Everyone typically works on the car. 4. Jason’s Teleport is OP to the point where you cannot get away. I think that ruins the fun. A way to balance this is by causing Jason to knock down a player and stun then instead of allowing for an instant kill or limiting they instant teleport kills to 1 per game.. 5. Sneak speeds are too slow… making stealth Gameplay a pain and not fun. Jason’s Sence ability is OP so it does not really work anyway. 6. Jason’s grabs are unbalanced so they all can instantly kill a character upon grab (God Frames). This could have easily been solved by limiting these instant kills to once per round and by making the rest of these kills forced to be an environmental kill. 7. When you knock-down Jason recovers way to quickly (about 3 seconds) this could be counter balanced by making stuns last longer and even giving character’s with high strength additions time for stun attacks.

You scavenge for parts to help you escape but, GASP, there isn't enough space for EVERYBODY!? This mechanic was actually kind of nice, and it speaks volumes that they built an asymmetrical multiplayer system where it doesn't take perfect teamwork to succeed (because lets face it, that doesn't happen with public matchmaking).

On the side of Jason, you feel like an unstoppable killing machine. In this sense it is VERY similar to Evolve, however instead of being on the defensive from the start you simply build up to your more insane powers the longer the match drags on. It's probably the thing that works best, and its a true joy to play as the iconic killer when your turn comes up.

However that is infrequent (random selection and chances are 1/8) so settle in for some horrible facial animations because every counselor has them and you'll be playing them A LOT. Seriously, one of the first orders of business should be a boss mode style match, where its Jason V Jason V Jason or something, because as of right now the best part of the game is the smallest part of your play time with it.

This is a game you may want to wait on, but at the same time you risk never playing it while the community is thriving by doing so. Its tough to recommend a buy because while the formula is fun and works well, there just isn't much to it. There IS a surprising amount of progression and unlockables, which was a nice touch that I wasn't expecting, but its a thin veil for the lack of gameplay options.

Devs promise some good post release support, but have also mentioned several times that they were running into issues with console updates, so expect PC gamers to get the nod here for early content access, and perhaps even exclusive content.

Overall I'm a fan. The sound is good, the graphics are passable but there's nothing quite like the feeling that you're IN a Friday the 13th movie, frantically running for your life. A+ for the presentation, and by far the best game this movie has ever seen made in its honor. 7/10

Not because it actually does anything all that different from its competition, but rather the simple fact that it's based on one of the most iconic horror franchises of all time. The faithfulness to the property alone made it more enjoyable for me than the likes of Evolve or Dead by Daylight, despite those also being decent games in their own rights. Yet, being better than the rest doesn't mean that Friday the 13th managed to escape all of the problems that these kind of games are accustomed to. So the amount of fun you'll have will still vary wildly from match to match.

I found playing as a counselor to be the more consistently entertaining of the two options. You're given a lot of different ways to survive Jason's onslaught. A bare bones tutorial means that you'll have to figure out most of this stuff on your own, but discovering how all the different things you'll come across in the environment can be used to aid in your escape or defeat of Jason can be very satisfying, tense, and rewarding so long as you aren't killed at the beginning of the match and get to participate in putting all of the pieces together at least a little bit. Which kind of leads to the biggest problem on this side of the game. Playing as a counselor is obviously designed with teamwork in mind, but as anyone with any experience with multiplayer games will tell you even while being chased by a nigh unkillable brute in a hockey mask it's often your own teammates that will be your worst nightmare.

Coming across a group of high level players that like to hog all of the good stuff for themselves while berating the less experienced around them who are just trying to participate is no fun whatsoever. Mix that in with the game's already steep learning curve and one or more bad encounters like that could turn away some newcomers. Now, not everybody will have this problem. There are those who will come across longtime vets who are more than happy to show them the ropes. Unfortunately, it will just come down to luck of the draw as the big trade-off that comes with going online in any form is that at some point you're going to come across a jerk or two. I'm not saying that the asymmetrical multiplayer genre is more prone to these kind of encounters, but when the most enjoyable experiences I've had with these types of games were in matches where nobody was wearing a mic and we were all largely doing our own things, well, that should tell you something.

With the offline option being plagued with AI so bad it's outright unplayable, those wanting to go strictly solo are going to have to hope they get selected to be Jason. While it can be a lot of fun to rampage your way through Camp Crystal Lake leaving a trail of bodies in your wake, I did find that this side had the more flawed gameplay. Asymmetrical multiplayer games require a delicate balancing act of meticulously designed and interlocking systems to ensure that things remain fair on both sides of the experience. So it makes sense for the counselors to have a significant speed and mobility advantage over Jason considering that he's basically a walking, invulnerable death machine, but I don't see why his movements and controls had to be so stiff and clunky. This is somewhat offset by the variety of abilities at your disposal that vary across the handful of film incarnations you can play as, but those are rendered useless when faced with a player that is content to cheese the game by jumping in and out of windows repeatedly or running around a table until the clock runs out.

At it's best the game is an absolute blast. A lot of attention to detail was put into recreating the look and feel of the films, allowing it to pull off the tension and thrills of a good '80s slasher flick a nice portion of the time. The problem is that the experience is so darn inconsistent due to things like the stiff controls, connection issues, glitches, or potentially getting paired with toxic players. Because of that I can't wholeheartedly recommend it no matter how badly I actually want to.

The developers absolutely nailed the feel of the movies and Jason himself. All the counselors are charming in their own ways and the music is phenomenal. Which just makes it all the more disappointing.

I want to like this game, hell I want to play this game!

But I can't do either with the current state of things and over a month after release too. And the developers give absolutely no warning as to the state of the game, they expect you to buy the game as is and eventually they'll fix it. I do think they are genuinely trying to get the game to a playable state but they do not have the skill set required for this.

Progression: This game doesn't offer other reward than skins uppon reaching level 31 by unlocking the part 9 Jason, it only offers skins for the counselors, making it boring to the player to grind into the game an stick into playing it.

Bugs: There's a tooon of bugs on this game, starting from glitched kills from the killer preventing the Jason player to perform a kill by the counselor escaping from him due to the fact that jason can't perform any kill, specifically on the environment, and also glitches that the counselors can take advantage on it due to the fact of poorly placed invisible barriers on the map.

Report system: There's people inside of the game that act like they want, like on every other game, but the lack of support of the developers makes this game frustating to play due to the fact that you can get killed by another counselor by either being an ally of jason by telling him your position on the map or making you waste med sprays because of your dumb teammate.

Conclusion: The game offers lots of hours of fun, not gonna lie I'm personally level 88, but I always fell stressed out when I enter to this game due to the fact that there's not host migration, making me guess who is the host and hoping for him to not rage quit by either getting killed or by me, this game doesn't offer game support yet and the community never helps you when you are on a hurry against Jason.

The maps are amazing and the attention to detail from the films is a true joy to look at. A real love letter to the series. If only the game could have continued with new content. It never reached it's full potential and was plagued from day one by a company that wasn't able to handle the issues of this type of game.

That said, I still play it almost 2 years after launch weekly. It's worth a purchase or rental. I hope to see more asymmetrical games like this in the future.

After months of waiting, Friday The 13th the game has arrived!

The horror and slasher fan in me was literally giddy with excitement as I sat down to indulge in Gun Media's love letter to one of slasher cinema's greats.

For those not quite in the know (or for those who've grown up under a rock) Friday The 13th is a series of horror/slasher films starting in 1980 and centered around Jason Voorhees, a maniacal killer who drowned as a child in Crystal Lake while the camp counselors shagged like crazy. The first film saw his mother, Pamela Voorhees slaying the new camp staff one by one until she met her demise - and enter Jason.

Jason developed from a lonely, psychopathic survivor who sought revenge for the death of his mother into an undead behemoth seemingly intent on slaying anyone who crossed his path.

    Anyhoo, the game!!

Think Evolve crossed with Until Dawn and you're sort of on the right track with Friday The 13th. Seven players take on the guises of the camp counselors - all with their own stats and personalities, and one person becomes the eponymous Jason. His goal is to slaughter them all. The counselors have to survive or escape by repairing vehicles around the map, calling the police in or simply hiding until the time limit expires to survive the night. The only problem? Jason is out to eliminate them all.

Jason has some pretty cool abilities he can utilize and they explain certain aspects of the way he seems to be everywhere or in the right place at the right time in the films. His "Sense" ability allows him to see counselors hiding places which glow a deep red. That might seem like a massive advantage but bear in mind that the counselors can switch radios on or creep slowly to minimize the Sense ability. Play the radio in a cabin and Jason's Sense shows the whole cabin glowing red which means that there is somebody hiding in there - he just can't pinpoint where unless he enters and searches.

It balances out the fairness and means the protagonists have better odds of survival. Sort of.

Jason also has some other pretty cool abilities such as the ability to teleport to a chosen point on the map and a first person POV hunt cam which works similar to the effect in The Evil Dead when the evil force is travelling to the cabin. It's very satisfying hurtling along through the woods towards a glowing red camp counselor and grabbing them as you emerge from the first person POV.

So we move onto the kills. It wouldn't be Friday The 13th without some gruesome deaths and Jason thankfully has some awesome ones at his beck and call. The simple but effective choke and neck snap, ramming a machete down the throat, stamping on the face, ramming the head into a bird bath and then smashing a large stone over their head - the kills are lavish and beautiful and sound savage. It's particularly rewarding to use the hunt cam to fly through the map chasing a counselor and appear in front of them, grabbing them by the throat before uppercutting their head clean off.

Glitches do make the game occasionally annoying - connection issues still occur where you sit waiting to connect to a game for ages. But the love that the developers evidently have for the franchise shows through and with input from Tom Savini, Sean Cunningham and Kane Hodder himself, Friday The 13th : The Game is an exciting and fun jump into the horror set piece.

The server issue was not a suprise and I can overlook that as it is a indie game. Bad thing for those who can't play at all though without a single mode (will come I know)

I'll take 2 points away from a perfect score, but the game does exactly what it promised and gives you the feeling of the movies in a game. Not exactly something that happens frequently in the movie to game world. FUN!

Not only that the amount of rudeness I have encountered from people close to the devs is madding especially when they outright deny my request for a refund despite me having reasonable grounds. The glitches and bugs are not helpful either I remember how for almost two weeks playing the game was impossible due to database login failure not to mention the devs have gone through at least four different server providers at this point. All in all a very mediocre game and one I should have never spent my money on more so since I bought quite a bit of physical and digital merchandise to support the game launch.

The game isn't even worth the asking price of sixty dollars either as there are only three maps, six or seven different Jason's to choose from some being pretty useless, and about seven or eight different counselors with two or three of them being completely broken or useless depending on who plays them.

Then this game is for you. Yes, it is much like the Battlefield4 release back in the day when the new systems came out. Full of all kinds of buggy surprises. And for an IP that is as cheesy as it is... you have to kind of expect a cheesy game... These are not the guys at EA that have huge budgets to work with... You take what you can get. And considering the budget and work that these guys but in... I think it turned out great. Controls and graphics are not the best, but game play is fun... Audio is excellent, many different types of Jason models to use in the game... It is so awesome to see all the different Jasons from the movies. Different counselors have different abilities to use for different situations... lots of fun features are built into the game as far as counselors being able to communicate thru headsets IF they find walkie talkies... It is hard for the counselors to escape and win the game... but isn't that what you would expect in a Friday The 13th game??!!??
If you love Friday the 13th and love anything Jason... you will love this game after a little bit of time to figure out the controls, maps and objectives needed to escape.. Its not TOO simple, and it is not TOO complex. You can use teamwork... or play lone wolf. CH CH CH AH AH AH. And down the road we get single player with bots. Hopefully AI is kinda decent. I prefer online server games with real people anyways.
GREAT JOB on this game. Glad I got it... Glad it is finally out (No matter what state it is in)

The longer the match lasts, the more abilities Jason gets. As a counselor you have plenty of ways to hide and get away via items you find that can stun, distract or hinder Jason's abilities. I can see how the game can get old, fast with the the game as is, but it has the potential to be as addictive and endlessly fun as the original Left 4 Dead was. I haven't had a single game where someone on my team has started trash talking and calling people retarded because they know that it won't get them closer to victory. But that's not even the best part of the game. Playing as Jason is one of the best gaming experiences I've had all year, and every time I play as him, I have a blast. On a gameplay and entertainment level, this game is a knockout. However, that came with some drawbacks. A LOT of drawbacks.

The main problem is that the game just isn't finished. It's very broken. There are bugs galore and most of them have to do with the game's servers, which isn't good for a multiplayer only game. The developers even had the balls to claim that the players ruined the servers because they didn't think the game would be such a hit, which is the worst excuse I've heard in my life.

It's not just bugs and server issues, either. The game is missing content. It's a $40 game that comes with three maps and is only one mode. Additionally, there's no campaign, which is the reason they delayed it in the first place. You'd think something like this is an early access game, but no. It's a full release, which makes it the most lazy game release since Big Rigs.

Overall, Friday the 13th has fantastic elements of gameplay, but no elements of polish. It really sucks to see that what could've been one of the year's greats could've is instead one of it's disappointments. Hopefully once more content is released the game will have improved, and I can update the score. But for now, light 6/10.

I mean when it was first released you couldn't even get into a game so you couldn't experience the game at all. That's in the past and this is now, so there is fun to be had with the game. When you start up the game it'll connect online and you have options to customize your characters' perks (camp counselors as they're called in the game) and you can change your Jason after leveling up some. But the juicy part of this game is online, you'll have a 1/8 chance of becoming Jason. Most of the time you'll be playing as counselor. So I'll be talking about the experience as a counselor first then Jason. Playing as a counselor is a whole lot of fun, sneaking around and trying find a way to escape the madness that is Jason. You can escape by a boat, cars, the police, etc. Though it really depends on what map you're on, and there are a total of 3. Not a whole lot, the developers said they'll be adding more soon but I'm too sure if I believe them and I'll explain later on. Matches are most of the time tense since you have the fear of getting killed. Though there is this feature where you can come back as another character named Tommy Jarvis if someone uses a radio station which is in a house somewhere on each map (the maps are huge so it's not an easy task finding them). Now lets talk about the gameplay as a counselor.

Lets start with the combat and escaping. It's fun running anyway from Jason but when you are trapped in a house, sometimes you may need to fight him head on. And the combat is horrible, you need to pick up a random weapon from each map and the hit detection is so **** bad. Your character becomes stiff as you swing your weapon at Jason, and depending what weapon you're using, will determine the outcome on what happens to Jason. If you're using a wooden baseball bat, he'll fall down with one hit. If you're using an iron pipe, prepare to die because that won't do **** The way the weapons work is weird. How can a wooden baseball bat manage knock him down in one hit but not a huge axe or an iron pipe? Besides that, the sound is out of sync with the animation of the weapons. Not a huge deal but I felt like mentioning it. Now escaping, this is where most of the gameplay is at, combat is just a way to stun and run away from him when you're in trouble with Jason. To escape, you need to find parts on the map to repair phone boxes or a car. For the phone box you need a phone fuse, for a car you need keys, gasoline, and a battery. It's actually fun collecting these and to stealth around Jason. But it can be boring sometimes.

Now the gameplay as Jason, is most of the time, boring. It's fun to talk to people in game chat if they have mics, taunting them and cracking jokes along the way as they try to escape, but most of the time they don't have mics. And it's pretty much a fetch quest trying to kill everyone on the map. And there are so many ways to exploit the game to where you can't even get to people (most have been patched). It was actually more fun to play as Jason when the game first released because no one knew what to do or how to avoid Jason. And it was like chasing chickens with their heads off. But now everyone has a plan and it's much harder to get people nowadays. And holy **** when people find a phone fuse and phone box at the beginning of the game. It's the most irritating thing ever if you're playing as Jason because everyone groups up and runs for the cops. Leaving you with nothing. Now the combat is the same as the counselors expect you can grab people and do this neat little execution on them. Now let's move onto the bad.

    THE BAD FOR COUNSELORS:
Games can be extremely slow (each game is 20 minutes, and it sucks if you die right at the beginning)
Glitches to where people get out of the map and have an unfair advantage.
The combat is stiff and wonky, and guns are throw out after firing one shot instead of having ammo.
Jason grab is broken and he can grab you through objects sometimes.
Finding items to escape are near impossible at times.
And last are the players that team up with Jason and hunt other players down.

    THE BAD FOR JASON:
When people call the cops at the beginning of the game putting you in a rush to hunt down everyone as fast as people (which is hard because the maps are **** huge).
Sometimes you grab someone you can't kill them and they can't escape, putting you both in a funny but annoying situation.
You can get stuck after smashing a door
You can get stuck after pulling out a throwing knife then pausing (which could be patched but I don't know)
People can cheese you by running around objects
And last, it's a bit boring to play as Jason.

OVERALL: Friday the 13th can be fun if you have friends or if you find right people in a game. It's filled with bugs and glitches and it's clear this game was rushed. Buy this if you have a few pals

Killing Jason is a possibility... but you’ll need to team up with the other councilors to do this, as you’re definitely not doing this on your own... Not even with the single use shotgun
weapons are mostly for rescuing other players or stunning Jason to escape...
And you can communicate with players using a mic once you find a walkie talkie within the game which is a cool twist
The fun part to me comes in the form of playing as Jason..
There are multiple Jason’s to unlock and Just like the counselors each has their own stats... their own strengths and weaknesses...
as the match goes on the stronger Jason gets…
at first you just have a map, then you unlock a fear censor to see characters running around, a teleportation ability which allows you to dash through the air to pop up right in front of a counselor, useful for catching up to cars and stopping them in their tracks, or catching back up with an enemy after they stun you.. a stalk ability that turns of audio cues that you’re near, and finally a rage mode towards the end of a match that buffs all of your abilities, allows you to run faster and smash down doors with ease…
and to kill la councilor you can grab and use a finisher, attack them with a melee weapon or do one of many environmental kills like throwing them through a window…
however I found that actually being Jason was far too rare even with him set as my preference I only got to play as him once every hr. and half, matches fly by when you’re the killer, but as the counselor they seem to drag on forever, made worse by the fact you have to stay and watch in case you’re randomly selected to come back in as the hunted character or if you want your xp at the end of the match..
Which awards you points to unlock a new random perk or finish for Jason...
you can attach these perks to your characters all with buffs and debuffs, and if you get one you don’t like you can sell it back to the game.. .
By biggest issue with this game however is its match making…
Creating matches takes a ridiculously long time… and that’s if you’re lucky enough to stay in a lobby without one of the frequent error connections…
once in game things are fine.. But actually getting into a game probes to be a bit of an issue on the PlayStation 4…
Friday the 13th is an entertaining game for a while... more so when you’re playing as Jason…
But constantly playing as counselors I started to get bored with the game fairly quickly, and the server issues left me feeling frustrated when I just wanted to get into a game and play…
I give Friday the 13 the game
    A 6/10

Oh man the hype level for this game was through the roof. With a very bad opening couple days with the servers it got a lot of people mad. But with that said when the game works its extremely fun especially when you are playing as Jason. It really shows that this game was made by fans for fans.

First, understand I have not experienced the database errors and connection issues I know are plaguing most of the community. I've played a few dozen matches, although have had to wait upwards of 12-15 minutes several times. I give IllFonic and Gun Media the benefit of the doubt- they're small studios who made a big game and I expect within the next few weeks these issues will be smoothed out.

The gameplay itself is online-only, and as a camp horror fan since birth more accurately captures the hilarious horror tropes of the movies than perhaps any other game I've ever played. I could not put my controller down learning the ins and outs of how to escape from the fabled Jason, and taking control of the god-like serial killer is equally gleeful as I teleport across swaths of the map only to crush poor Chad's head like a grape, or snag an unsuspecting swimmer from the deep and seal their ultimate fate.

Easter eggs abound, from the ability to don Pamela Voorhees' sweater and stun Jason as his mother's voice plays an overlay, to Tommy Jarvis' post-death introduction, and each time around feels frantic, funny, panicked and delightful.

True 13th fans must get this game as an homage to their nostalgia, the fan-service is incredible and I can't wait to play with friends.

However, it does hava its flaws. Unpolished is putting it lightly, as clipping, difficult controls and inconsistent hitboxes make it more difficult than it has to be playing as either "class". The concept of escape is difficult to grasp at first, and I've still never once escaped alive. I don't think I've personally ever seen a car battery in game.

With only three maps to choose from you also feel a bit limited and the game gets mildly repetitive, but each game does have its fresh elements. I'm also not sure, given the wonderful level design, subtle graphical elements, and AMAZING score, that I'll ever be tired of Higgins Haven or Crystal Lake anyway. I've seen each movie dozens of times over, playing the game is just as fun each time.

Additionally, yes, Jason feels a bit overpowered. However, that's kind of the point. His powers wonderfully capture the "how can he be everywhere" feel of the movies, while constraining him just enough to usually allow 1-4 counselors their escape. True fans will WANT to encounter the maniac and the frantic chases are often the highly intense moments you crave. You can also add RNGed perks to your counselor choices (there are several) and there are various versions of Jason to choose from, each with different weapons, skills, abilities, and certain drawbacks. The game feels just balanced enough to keep you coming back, determined to escape or cut the heads off the over-sexed teens of Crystal Lake.

Server issues aside, this game is a true testament to B-Horror fans everywhere. It is an absolute must-have to me already, and I highly recommend it-eventually. I say eventually because it is true connectivity is a problem, so consider waiting a few weeks for server patches before doing yourself a favor and falling in love with this gem.

First of all, lets start off with the crazy amount of bugs it has right now. While most of them aren't game breaking, I personally think that seeing players getting glitched out whenever you're about to kill someone as Jason can be quite frustrating. Not to mention the servers being terrible for some people wanting to play, I personally haven't experienced this, bur some of my friends have. Plus the terrible facial animations are pretty comedic to look at.

Now one thing that was a huge let down for me was that on console, the game is 30 fps. Now, while some people not find this a big deal, I'm a very picky guy with those kind of things and seeing this made me very disappointed. I see no reason this game can't be 60 fps considering how small the maps are and how the graphics aren't astronomical.

And one little thing I should add is the price. The game currently while writing this review is a little to overpriced. $40 is quite the amount and here in Canada, it costs $53.49. There is some content in this game, just not enough for the price.

Now with all that out of the way, do I recommend the game? Absolutely, just not right now. The game is still actually a ton of fun if you can ignore all the things that I stated above. Playing both as Jason and the counselors is very fun (I personally love playing as Jason). And again, while there isn't too much content in the game right now, the customization is still pretty good. I know Gun Media is a small development team but I believe that overtime, they will fix all the problems with this game and add more maps, gamemodes, characters, and customization.

The game offers a lot a variety of ways to keep playing as there are multiple methods of escape and the sense of accomplishment you get if you manage to team up an take Jason out. The game really can be very enjoyable both solo and with friends. There are a few updates that could be made, but it seems they are working very diligently to continue updating the game. ive been playing since release day and have experienced very few of the problems users complain about because i started this game by hosting private matches. most people had problems getting quick match to work, which for the majority of the time ive played i have avoided. over all alot of care and attention was put into jasons character, and it does a very good job making you feel like this is how jason would be.
i am not going to go into detail on what the game is about, or how to play..this review is late and you can look up videos for gameplay. over all the game is awesome as long as you are playing with honest/fair people who dont use glitches, though the developer is patching issues fairly quickly. if you like friday the 13th it is worth the purchase, its fun and content will continue to be developed (more maps/single player vs bots/skins/clothes). over all i have played nothing but this since release, and it is a refreshing break from traditional games like first person shooters, and it doesnt fail where games like evolve did. awesome game, worth $40. buy it if you love the franchise (digital only right now, disk version will come out later).

I recently purchased an Xbox One and wanted something different outside of the COD series, or Madden. I was pleasantly surprised to find this title, because the franchise has long been a favorite of mine.

I've only had the game for a couple of days, so there is an obvious adjustment period here, but the $40 price tag is a bit high.

For starters, the mechanics of the game are not very clear. There is a tutorial section on the home screen that I strongly recommend taking a look at before diving into online play; most of the players here have likely been playing since the title came out. I was a little late. There is an offline mode you can participate in. I, again, strongly recommend practicing before going live with your abilities. This mode lets you choose the ease of level, as well as the number of counselors to challenge. Since this is offline, it's controlled by the computer.

You can purchase 'perks' using experience points, as you can in any other game that's available. They're not 'expensive', although some of the perks don't seem to be properly priced. I won't spoil any of them for you, although if you've viewed the films, these should come as no surprise.

My biggest criticism is that Jason moves infuriatingly slow. I understand this is taken directly from the films, but in the context of gaming, it's a serious limit to your abilities. The maps are are very similar, so if you spend time navigating (a practice run, if you will) you can better prepare yourself for online matches. Much of his energy is expensed opening doors. so if you're on someone's tail, prepare to lose them fairly quickly.

The third-person view is extremely helpful, however. Unlike its competitor, Dead by Daylight, you have the advantage of seeing your opponent without the hassle of first person. Seeing your surroundings is certainly easier, and this is a positive in the layout of the game. There are tools available to help advance you more quickly (morph), so if you find yourself bored with the walking, I recommend this feature.

I had to give this game a 7 for creativity. In online play, you'll most likely be a counselor. Most people want to play as Jason, so if you find someone that doesn't want to play as a counselor, they'll likely leave the party. Team play has been disjointed for the most part. It's difficult figuring out the controls, and the layouts of the map almost guarantee an extended period of play time. There wasn't much lag to note, and glitches were minimal.

Perhaps a revamp to this game will be offered in the future. I will probably purchase it. I think a 7/10 is a fair score based on the pace of my game play so far.

Past the release a little troubled, after updates currently the game is with good content and very stable. If you gather your friends to play together, wait for hours of fun in a game that brings the elements of the cine-series Friday the 13th, portrayed with great fidelity to the console. The first times you play the game as one of the monitors, the feeling of fear, panic, terror are very great, much due to the excellent soundtrack of the game that makes a great immersion to the player. Knowing that you are being hunted by an almost immortal killer gives a sense of urgency that few games can. Playing like the famous Jason, you have the pleasant surprise of being able to use powers not seen in the movies but that explains for example he is always in front of his victims even walking most of the time. The game objectives: as counselours .. get away from the map and for this, you can choose to try to call the police to rescue you, repair cars or boats to escape either alone or with your partners. stay hidden until the end of the match (which lasts 20 minutes) or even try to kill Jason, action that requires the help and coordination of several players plus sooo much luck. Being Jason, the goal is basic: kill all the counselours before they run away or the time of match runs out. Get ready for hours of nostalgia, fun, moments of tension and fear. If you can play between friends the fun increases a lot.

The game is at its best when those online multiplayer matches make you feel like you are part of the movie. That sudden burst of excitement when Jason is using stalk and comes up out of nowhere and the music intensifies.

The game is balanced enough. In games like these it is often the survivors that are OP and the killer is a bit weaker. This mostly avoids this trap. You could have a match with a dominant Jason or a match where the counselors are well coordinated enough to beat Jason.

You will run into some toxic players or trolls from time to time but that is with any online game. The only major downfall is the bugs and glitches and how slow the team is to get them fixed. Thankfully as the game has been updated there hasn't been anything totally game breaking but rather an annoyance of sorts. They still have a two or three more patch updates to roll out so they will at least leave it in a playable state when they abandon the game.

Friday the 13th: The Game is a very special game. It follows the movies very well to the point where it feels like you're playing one of the movies! The game is rough around the edges (some of the animations look very odd for example!) buuuut... it's still a good experience overall! Should you buy it? That depends.

This game is interesting. But there are a lot of bags. Every game I was dying because of some kind of problem. Jason went through the closed door and killed me. Only fond memories are associated with this game, it is beautiful, but because of Lawsuit The game cannot receive new content, the trial will end tomorrow, see if the content (hopefully yes) of such a game cannot be lost

Looking for a fun night in and like getting some virtual balls dropped in your face or betrayed by teammates who either kill you or help Jason find you? You'll love this.

When those other things aren't happening, it can be fun for a few rounds.

The game play is good well kind of the problem is the glitches but most of them are fun you're probably the only reason you would play the game after you unlock everything and unlock the last 3 kill you you can buy with your CP until weget over a hundred levels the grammar is s*** because I'm using a microphone everytime I choose a counselor it would randomize it after the time and sometimes even the Jason's will randomize and have a weird glitchy look what is the problem if you're only good with one Jason and seemingly impossible to escape if you have a good Jason even an average of Jason is you have a Pro counselors and maybe one of your Pro counselors just don't f*** When I Grow someone 3 feet away it gets in somehow but one eye slightly miss them three inches to the left overhead it doesn't all that could grab them like they do the offline Bots f****** a basket full of pocket knives anyways bad grammar because I'm using a microphone you can deserve this please I recommend thinking about buying this game and should have just a buying this game instantly I don't know maybe it's a problem because I'm playing on Nintendo switch oh and also half the f****** weapons make no sense a f****** firecracker stun game all that's going to do is maybe that can is throw pellets you
that you and maybe can hurt your ears a little bit but it's not going to f****** hurt you and why is there flare guns at a kids camp flare gun could set something on fire

    Pro’s:
    - Fun with friends

    - A host of bugs are present
    - Jason seems extremely overpowered at times
    - Facial animations and character models
    - Barely any map differentiation
    - Grindy trophies that won’t even be achievable soon.

I had fun with this game with friends but sometimes it felt like a buggy mess and nothing more than a cold cash grab, hiding away from Jason can be pretty fun at times, and I love how intense the game gets, but apart from this the game doesn’t do much for itself, but this could probably be down to the lawsuit that’s been going on for a while, though I still feel like they should work on the game, if you’re thinking of achieving a platinum trophy on Friday the 13th, then prepare for hundreds of hours of misery if playing by yourself, cutscenes repeat themselves and the facial animations can be downright terrifying at times, if the game had some polish it could genuinely be a lot of fun, but in its current state and with dedicated servers closing in game it doesn’t seem like we’ll be getting that.

Chad Jones wants to recommend this game but can only half recommend it.

Friday the 13th is potentially the greatest video game made in history. The ahead of its time graphics, compelling and addictive gameplay, insanely quick server and loading times, incredible soundtrack and spine-crawling sound effects, and a wide arsenal of content that is so addicting you will put thousands of hours into the game without even realizing it! 3/10

I spent a whole year with my brother playing this game non stop, every game was different and every game was a challenge in so many ways. Just a shame the makers of the game gave up on it. Otherwise my rating would be 10/10. Just wish the lawsuit was not used as a easy and lazy way to give up on a game. Shame on you Gun Media. Thanks for the effort in the beginning though. Expand

It's kind of a huge mess but I still sunk over 100 hours into it. As a fan of the series that must count for something.

It’s too bad that there’s no challenge mode, but an asymmetric multiplayer game based on a movie is an interesting concept itself.

Friday the 13th: The Game is the closest you are ever going to get to being in a Friday The 13th movie. It's so realistic that I had goosebumps every time I saw Jason. However if you are playing alone it can get a little boring at times, and that makes me wish that there was a decent single player mode But with its authenticity this is the best Friday The 13th game that we may ever have and it will make every fan very happy.
