Played cooperatively, For the King is an entertaining and engaging stand-in for a tabletop RPG game and its pleasant art and gentle humor balance nicely its difficulty and mechanical complexity. It’s less fun as a single-player experience, simply because coordinating character movement and exploration with quests and combat challenges and random encounters is a lot to track. Including the DLC, the console version of For the King is a substantial amount of reasonably priced content.

Though RNG issues can render it punishing and solo play is not hugely captivating, For The King nonetheless states a decent case for itself as a tactical, fantasy multiplayer board game that everybody can enjoy. Get the snacks in, get the friends in and away you go.

If you have two board game friends who are hungry for their dice roll fix, For the King may be for you. Cleverly blending its roots with the Rogue-Like genre, it offers substantial content for those who are adept at tactical combat and cooperative board games. Don't go there thinking of playing it alone, because the whole thing loses interest dramatically. Board game buffs will see For the King as a good palliative to their usual activities.

Each campaign offers enough of a twist on the core loop to keep things interesting, either with environmental effects such as a health-sapping chill in the air or otherwise by switching up the rules of engagement. Acquainting yourself with each class’s specialities, especially as you equip better weapons and unlock new abilities, is a treat as well. However, there’s little to recommend to those who are not already fans of the genre and eager to roll some dice. [Issue#164, p.90]

It is a challenging game with depthA strategic turn based RPG with elements from tabletop and rougelike. Don't be fooled by its appearance. It is a challenging game with depth to it. If you don't use a valid strategy you will fail. The PS4 version contains the main game “For the King” and the add ons “Frost Adventure”, “Gold Rush”, “Into the Deep”, “Dungeon Crawl” and “Hildebrands Cellar”. You start a game with a party of 3 heroes of your choice on a randomly generated hexagon map and have to clear a campaign. While you can see a lot of the map your adventures will only uncover what its on the adjacent fields. There are Monsters to defeat, random encounters, hidden Dungeons and more. You find better equipment and level up. However there is always a threat that pushes you forward as time is scare. Be it chaos that makes enemies stronger, freezing cold or a flood that means game over. A bit of advice: Stick your party together as there is a support range. Members outside this range will not be available in combat. Overall I fully recommend this for people that like a challenge and need no bombastic graphics or CGI. The developers put their hearth and soul into the game and it deserved to be played. I give a 9/10 for the great entertainment. Expand

I moved to another country so I don't live near my brother anymore and we love playing this together! I don't think it'd be as fun with strangers. But with friends / family it's a blast to plan / stratagize everything out and and the hours just got by. I wish there were more games like this! Expand

The game's RNG can be extremely punishing at times but proper preparation will be always be rewarded and failure serves only to better your next attempt.
For the king really shines as a multiplayer game, couch co-op with 2 friends is clearly how it's meant to be played, if you host game nights or are just entertaining guests for a weekend for the king will certainly entertain.

It's got elements of DND, and it's fun to level up the characters and collect items. The game does rely too much on RNG elements though as if you don't get good enough gear in your battles it will definitely affect your success in the final fights, and it seems like your enemies almost always get some dmg in or apply negative effects to your characters during battles. Like I think it would of been more fun if you rolled a dice since it's trying to be like tabletop games like DND.

A lot of the mechanics are NOT explained by the game, and it just makes it where the game assumes you know everything. There really needed a tutorial that explained a lot of the game mechanics, instead of you just sitting down and reading for several minutes or eventually figuring out what is going on. That is poor design and more time should of been spent on this by the developers. Also the final boss fight is total BS, unless you use BS mechanics to win, so for example if you have items or abilities that use the revert ability, it can keep shifting the boss back to the bottom of the order of turns. LIke it's great to win, but it feels somewhat cheap and it isn't as satisfying as defeating a well written boss, or like defeating the villain in a DND game with friends.

Overall, a good game with replayability
