ffxv does not reach in any way the previous saga exalted, resulting in an empty product, incomplete and botched badly. each component of the game is not worthy of a AAA title: a poorly defined graphics, with frequent dips in frame and a hateful camera; a shallow gameplay and mechanical very slow designed to extend the life and unnerve; a meaningless plot, with characters (presented in all these years of trailer) reduced to miserable appearances (lol); longevity of the main quest of 15h, with fetch quests all the same to all, and the only good of the game is successful about the soundtrack (I guess you could say made by third parties), wasted on this failure. ffxv first not to be a ff is not even a video game because it is incomplete, poor in every component and by far the worst chapter in this saga almost waned. goodbye final fantasy

Major disappointment. Game starts strongly - open world, road trip - but falls apart after the first island. The game feels like it was rushed to completion on a shoestring budget. The subsequent areas are incomplete; walled off so you can "look but don't touch". The areas you can walk through are empty - no NPCs, no side quests... just nothing. The story stops making sense. The subsequent areas are incomplete; walled off so you can "look but don't touch". The areas you can walk through are empty - no NPCs, no side quests... just nothing. The story stops making sense. It's very obvious entire side-stories were cut.

You can see the vision of what might have been. An ice and snow area. A castle on fire. A city metropolis. A night version of the world. But the vision was never realised. Several areas clearly built for a boss battle, but the boss never materialises. The final boss battle is cut short - you never see the villain's final form, as you'd expect from a FF game - instead a QTE event against a staggering human form.

The story is a mess. Not enough cutscenes - only 5 hours, when a typical FF game you expect 20-30 hours cutscenes - and it was obviously butchered. The missing story is partly explained through notes, but it's still underdeveloped. Character development is ignored - there are major character who you learn nothing about, because their scenes got cut to make a deadline.

The new battle system is a total failure The tactical planning and strategic resource management in other FF games, reduced to quicktime events and button mashing. It's just shameful.

Giving it 6/10 because the first island is so good and shows what could have been. But can't rate it any higher because it's an incomplete game. It's not even half a game. It's more like 25%.This should have been a multi-part game, with FFXV only covering the first island.

This game is just a cooking and camping simulator.

    Full of boring fetch quests.
Brainless combat. just mashing one button.
    Terrible storytelling.
Lots of important events occur offscreen.
    Terrible AI party.
Load of hype cutscenes from 2013-2016 trailers not even in the game.

Totally uninspiring game. It utilizes graphics and obscene scenes to try and get you gripped. It only consists of mindless fetch quests as an attempt to make the game last longer. If that is what you want out of a final fantasy game then go ahead and buy it.

This game is a typical Japanese style open world RPG. They just fill the world with "filler" side quests, that are not interesting at all.
They try to clone the success of Dragon Age and Mass Effect, emphasis on your "buddies". But your buddies are generic prototypes without interesting background story or charm.
If you think that's fine, it's an FF, we can still play it for the epic

    You are wrong.
I don't know how is it possible to come up a game with such nonsense story after so many years of development and iteration. The main story is just as bad as the side quests. It feels like a poorly edited movie, a lot of parts of the story don't connect with each other. The developer running out of time?

But any way, since the game provided a huge open world, and a kind of robust combat system, I'll give a 5.

Your Companions are worthless in Fights and get themselves Killed most of the Time because they are to stupid to move away when a boss does a Areal attack, and the lack of story telling CGI movies made me almost cry because this was what the big flair of FF was, watching a epic 30min cgi after struggeling through a chapter of the game was always great and a nice way to progress the story and get informed what happened behind the scenes while you fought a building high foe.
these are the reasons for me this is no real FF but an ok rpg in a FF-esque world.

Now to the Good parts. The Open world and the possibilities to Explore via Chocobo are Great and you loose hours exploring a new found Dungeon ,go fishing or hunting Monsters for Cash while leeaving the Main Story behind.TheSummons are Epic and its just great watching Ramuh or Leviathan Destroying everything while you watch them from the Ground!Discovering new Receipes for Ignis and taking a Foto tour with Prompto are good fun too especially because they actually help you and give you new Perks/buffs for the next day after you ate them.In my opinion they should have taken a year more time, while canceling Kingsglaive and instead cut the movie (with additional Material) and add it as cutscenes into the game, also they should have wheter do a real Realtime Battle System ala DMC or something else or just leave it Round Based like FF always was just cooler looking (the wait mode they included as other method of Fighting isnt really a choice) also they hould have let you choose wich char of your party you want to control and switch between the OTF.also they should have added more Party members and let the group build up like in old games where u start alone or as Duo and meet everyone else on your journey.
And what really bugged me was the last §rd of the Game as it was linear AF only getting on one path until the final Conclusion, wich felt just wrong after having so much freedom the last 40hrs before that finish., and they left huuuge story holes open, probably for future DLC wich is a shame!

Many of dungeons are well designed, so it offers interesting stuffs to enjoy after finishing main story.
For me this game is not perfect, but still very fun-I've been playing for about 70hr and definitely will play more. It would be a one of greatest game if Squar Enix patch up the game to have better narratives for main story and details for some important supporting characters.

This game is a solid 6. It will entertain you and doesn’t get off to an awful start, but the game continues to collapse after the first ~5 hours in. For brief moments this game feels like it could be an 8 or 9 (i.e. esper summons, certain battle sequences or CGI scenes). However, those moments are fleeting and soon enough you are cast back into the shell of a game which utilizes many half-assed mechanics.

STORY: 4/10--All reviewers are on the same page with this one--the story is disjointed, it feels like parts are left out, not enough context/background is provided. There is very little reason to empathize with the characters and fight for them. If this game was developed with the idea that people would be watching Kingsglaive or going back and purchasing it, then shame on the devs. This game needs to stand on its own and it doesn't. If story is important to you, then either watch the movie or pass on FFXV (they plan to patch the story--Crazy!!). I can't imagine it even making sense with the movie as many key events happen off-screen or are simply not explained. These were key opportunities to show impactful events (i.e. deaths, permanent injuries, political events).

Music: 7/10--This could be an 8 if there was more music. I don't find the tracks to be very original, memorable or something that will blow you away. However, the menu music is relaxing and catchy, the combat music is fitting. I found myself getting a little amped up when I heard the specific music that plays when an esper summon becomes available. It's got a very **** is about to go down" feel to it. So, where's the problem? As you travel the world you'll notice almost every place you stop in the open world plays the SAME honky-tonk country song. In almost every FF game you can attach a song to a town or villain and I can't do that with FFXV. There's just not enough here.

COMBAT: 8/10--Combat is fun. It's not very complicated and with a little bit of effort you can become powerful enough to make most battles a nonthreat. With practice, it's cool to switch between weapons on the fly and to match-up to the enemies weakness by weapon type or element. Blocking and parrying is simple, but feels great nonetheless. Magic is very powerful when crafted properly, but I found the crafting system to be a little annoying and equipping magic takes up one of your weapon slots. Missing from this game (to my knowledge) are classic FF spells like Haste, Berserk, Holy, Ultima, Meteor, and so on. There is only Fire, Thunder and Ice which can be modified to stop, poison and kill enemies (with a few other unmentionable buffs).

GAMEPLAY: 6/10--FFXV has several minigames and other mechanics such as cooking, but they're not implemented in any meaningful or enjoyable way. Fishing is rather boring as is the pinball game. Cooking can give your party serious stat boosts, but require camping which means you earn 1.0x your exp when resting (as opposed to a cheap hotel which may give 1.5x). So what actually happens before a tough battle is you will go rest at a hotel to cash in your XP at 1.5x or 2.0x, then go rest again at a campsite to cook. It's silly and annoying. Sure, there is chocobo racing, but it just gets you medals. Don't expect to obtain Knights of the Round from this minigame. Some reviewers have raved about the roadtrip feel to this game. It was cool at first, but I shortly found myself using fast travel whenever possible. The relaxing car ride also feels very out of place in terms of the story and some of the prompts you receive before driving at night get old really fast as you cannot skip it. There is so much more to say on all the mechanics in this game, but the short of it is it all feels sort of rushed and there to "check the box".

WORLD DESIGN: 5/10: The mix of openworld and linear story feels like two different games literally stitched together by a few lines of code to transport you between the modes. There are a couple of cool places in the world, but you don't spend enough time there. Go Google "final fantasy towns" and click the wikia page. Every FF except very early ones) has really unique towns you can remember by name, by site, by the music. FFXV breaks that with a bunch of identical roadstops playing the same music. The towns are not unique or fun to explore. The only reason to explore is to pickup random glowing dots (items) on the ground which actually detracts from looking at the world.

I could go on, but I'm at the max char limit. This is quite the game to analyze...it really is a frankenstein of development. Even the graphics and voice-acting can be stellar in some areas, and HORRID the next. Supposedly there are great dungeons accessible AFTER the story. Huh? You have to ask, what kind of game were they trying to make???

I'm a long time fan of the franchise and I enjoyed every minute of it. I like the story, the characters, the music, the game-play, the graphics, and everything in between (like when i thought Noctis was executing a limit break by flying off and all i could see was the landscape below me.... then Noctis dropped down and was below the streets. It was hilarious.)

The endgame hunts are good but the fact you can only have one at a time is stupid. Traveling in the car ,especially while flying, is terrible and they should setup landmarks like Skyrim where, if you've been to a checkpoint, you can fast travel. The endgame dungeons are horrid. Fight the same four or five enemies in different quantities for 3+ hours without being able to save till you get to the boss.
The game just feels unfinished. The story has huge gaps in it.
Why was the empire even in the game?
What happened to that immortal guy in the first dungeon.
Why do you get reported dead by the empire than stroll around like nothing happened. No one notices that the DEAD PRINCE is walking around.
The character development picks up at the end but 75% of the game you don't care about your friends and I never cared about Lunafreya. They are supposed to have this bond. They met for ONE DAY twelve years ago, but they were pen pals? They have cell phones in the world. The difficulty is way too low. It is almost impossible to die, with items you could probably beat the game at level 25. Skipping cutscenes maybe 15 hours to beat if rushed.
I know it seems brutal, but I did beat it and get max Lvl. I think if they had used the combat system with a well fleshed out story and characters it could have been really great. It seems like they spend a lot of time on the battle system and not enough on pacing and storytelling. fetch quests are all the side missions and none have depth except the chocobo line. If i had to rate the recent FF games it would be as listed below
It can give an insight into what i value in games. RPGS are about stories and worlds, not the best graphics and battle system.

I'll start with 1. what most people will see as bad, then speak a little bit about 2. what I personally don't like, and then 3. a quick run through of everything FF15 does correctly and excellent in my opinion:

    1.

The game makes you "watch" sometimes, putting you in a situation where you are meant to soak in the atmosphere. If you are impatient and just genuinely want pure action from video games, I'd stay away from FF15. I thought the "watching" parts of the game really made me feel like the world was real and that Noctis and his guardians were real dedicated to each other. Frankly, it's one of the reasons why I like the game so much, but again, if you aren't this kind of gamer it is probably the main reason I would say to stay away from FF15.

The combat isn't Devil May Cry, Dark Souls, Darksiders or any kind of action/adventure-style. It is also not completely turn-based. I say that because some people literally don't know about this until they start playing. It may seem nit-picky to even mention it in a review, but you would be surprised for the reasons people don't like games.

There are parts of this game that are not story, heroes-saving-the-day oriented (think GTA5's golf or tennis or skydiving or racing). Some FF fans may think that this detracts from the focus you could have if the game was just based on story elements, but as a repeat player the non-story critical elements keep me engaged and fill out the world.

The game expects you to know a little bit about the world of FF15 before playing. Seriously, if you want to play watch the short movies and TV episodes associated with FF15. You can find them on YouTube. I wouldn't have minded doing this, but I found out during my playthrough and I could see other people hating that the game doesn't start on "Square One."

    2.

A lot of FF15's functions and controls very unintuitive. The game has a way of "interrupting itself" at times too, and this is annoying. Perhaps because I blew straight through the story and am now doing a patient replay and doing everything, my second playthrough just feels so much better than the first as it relates to understanding all the mechanics and how the world in FF15 works. To spin this positively though, I feel great that I learned the full controls and setup of the game on my own after sometime, but I wonder if there was an easier way of doing this.

Noctis feels extremely squishy. This can get annoying when fighting foes that are higher levels than you, and more so when, as mentioned before, you haven't worked out all the kinks of playing through the game. As a plus, this game is definitely harder than most FF games I have played when attempting a straight-shot full complete, but in a way that doesn't feel extremely cheap. An example is FF10, an amazing game, but a game that you can just tell had some sections where you were meant to be repeatedly smashed by a boss until you realized that it was time to murder giant turtles until you could prevent being smashed by said boss. If you die in this game it is because you are genuinely not fighting correctly or the stuff you are fighting is way too hard. The difficulty and the awkward controls can frustrate non-veterans at points though.

The story is serviceable, but has a few points I REALLY don't like about it. I won't spoil anything, but I really don't like when a game expects you to already be emotionally invested in or be intuitive against characters too early into their introductions. Things will happen to someone or you'll see someone and it's like the game is telling you "you should be feeling sad right now" and "this guy is your enemy." As someone that plays games without sound a lot (my thought process is that BGM doesn't play in real life), you can really see some of the game's silliness when playing without sound.

    3.

The game looks great, is definitely something that wasn't possible on last-gen consoles, the combat feels nice and new, I really like how packed with details and features the game is (the team gets dirty after fighting too long, the mini games are surprisingly well done, chocobo riding is dope, etc.), and in general just feels like a solid $60ish well-spent. The game isn't a perfect 10 for me, at certain times where it is forcing me to do things I don't want to do or isn't fleshing out characters more than I would like it's a 6.0-7.0, but as a package it's more of a 9.0 to 9.5.

I try to think about games in the sense of what the developers and art team were trying to convey, and it feels like the team cared about what they were making with FF15. I like that they gave me a little "thank you" note in my game box, and the disc inside the game case feels like a good gift to put this card with.

The world itself is what was worth the 10 years. This being my first ever Final Fantasy game, I went in expecting amazing gameplay and battles, as well as beautiful environments and compelling music. I went in with the right expectations (Sans the story, of course). First off, I'll start with the characters. The characters were likeable enough. I've never seen a game with such a relatable "Prince" character, let alone pull off such chemistry between such a close-knit group of friends. They were funny when they told their jokes, but had their heartfelt moments - especially in the end of the game. As with any game, each of the four falls into certain archetypes that, in all honesty, are somewhat overplayed, but it works.

Now the story isn't the game's strong point as it relies on a movie and five-episode anime. There are parts that seemed kind of rushed (especially close to the end), and kind of jarring because of such a weird change between open and linear. Though the game does warn you when it becomes linear, telling the player that they won't be able to visit the open-world for quite some time. I agree with most people in saying Chapter 13 is probably the worst chapter in the story, focusing on some form of stealth that really does not match the tone. For that entire chapter, the player has no party, so it's quiet. The only other noises you hear are the patrolling enemies that apparently can see where you're hiding if you ran away and hid just one corner away from them, but turn dumb as bricks had you turned about 50 corners in such a small hallway, then hiding just one corner away. Throughout the entirety of the part that does take place in the open-world though, Noctis is sent through quests taking him through destroying military bases, finding royal arms, or going into covenants with the gods. So technically, you can complete the story in more than 20 hours, if you decide to find ALL the Royal Arms before continuing on. Royal Arms are arguably the best weapons in the game, usually having Attack Points of 330 or higher. However, this power comes at the price of Noct's slowly deteriorating health with every hit he makes using them, so it's always best to keep potions handy when the player knows they're going to use them.

Speaking of weapons, now I'm going to talk about Combat and Gameplay. Combat is actually really fun. Players are told in the tutorial to hold down the attack button to attack enemies and pull combos, however, players can actually keep mashing if they prefer the normal Hack-and-Slash gameplay. For fans of the older games, players can actually set the combat to "wait mode" which pauses the game (for a certain amount of time) when the player stands still, so they can strategize in the heat of battle. I prefer the active battle, truth be told, as the wait mode can take me out of the immersion. Battles actually look really cool and the hits are satisfying, but should they meet certain requirements, players are able to summon the aforementioned Gods to basically finish off the battles in such a beautifully satisfying flourish. Driving's kinda "eh" as the car's on a rail, but players can determine the direction of where to turn at intersections, should they pick manual mode. Auto mode's self-explanatory, but also leads to the fast travel system. Boss battles are really **** cool and look beautiful. There is a lot of **** you can do in this massive world too, ranging from Chocobo Races to Dungeoneering. Platforming's kind of **** due to the jump mechanic being odd (which caused me to cry out of anger due to the difficulty of the End Game Pitioss Dungeon). The game does have long load times, so take piss breaks when using fast-travel.

I've never seen such good graphics on a third-person perspective RPG. Seriously, the lighting and the textures are top-notch. Especially on the goddamn food. Everything looked almost as they were promised during the E3 presentation.

If you're a fan of the series, get it! If you're new to the series, it's a nice and fresh introduction. I highly recommend this game, as I've never played any game that looks as cool or plays as satisfyingly as Final Fantasy XV. I understand the game's far from perfect, as it has some glaring holes in both story and gameplay, but looking past that, it actually was worth the ten years of development. Usually, with games in development hell, they turn out to be not-as-good as everyone was hyped up for it. This one came as close to the hype as I've ever seen any game. Seriously, buy it. Fans of open-world RPGs or Hack and Slash games will not be disappointed due to likeable characters, satisfying combat, and tonnes of **** to do. The game is so beautiful that I'm still amazed by how it looks. It's a nice change of pace for the Final Fantasy series, and I'm glad this was my introduction

This is possibly one of MY personal contenders for Game of the Year 2016.

It's like if the creators had never laid their hands on The Witcher 3, GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption or Fallout 3.

    Why 5 then?
    - Combat system works at first and is quite impressive (very dynamic, flashy). However magic is poorly designed and it's all kind of messy and gets repetitive after a while.
    - Music is great.
    - Roadtrip bromance kind of work and is refreshing.

Do not buy that, go play 30$ The Witcher 3 GOTY Edition instead. It offers a far superior open world experience.

It was so incredibly horrible that the developers gave a free year of game play and focused on recasting FFXIV Realm Reborn. I put Final Fantasy XV right on pace. The Developers created a story with such lack luster that they should be ashamed to call this title Final Fantasy. When I think Final Fantasy I think of a story so compelling it draws you in and its almost like watching a movie. It was apparent within the first 15 minutes of Final Fantasy XV that this was not going to be the case. At the beginning my father says to take care as I am the heir and the last son of the royal family. I knew immediately that something tragic was about to unfold. About 40 minutes later in the game it happened my father the king died in a less than epic fashion. There was absolutely zero character development or emotion for the passing of my father. In some strange way I was more relieved that my companions sister lived and was less concerned with the death of my own father the king to the empire. I never really fell into the story of how now I am the king as the passing of my father happened. I never felt the drama of my future queen and her departing. In fact it was so clunky I had a hard time following the story. I agree that the open world, side quests and dungeons are great but with the ultimate sacrifice of a compelling story that drives me. I never felt connected to the story in a way that felt epic or made my heart skip a beat. I am trying to not give too many spoilers but if your considering purchasing a final fantasy go buy the hd remake of final fantasy 10 as it is 100% better than this garbage. Please save your $60 and don't support the developer and bad games as this only encourages them to produce more bad games. As gamers we deserve more especially from a franchise name such as final fantasy. Don't get caught up in the nostalgia of final fantasy thinking OMG another Final Fantasy this has to be good because if it were any other game it wouldn't score over a 5 star review by any site. You have been warned don't purchase unless you are willing to accept a disappointment to the franchise yet again. Good Job Square Enix you matched Final Fantasy XIV the original yet again what a shame. Expand

At its current state it is still filled with bugs and no where near as polished as it should be. Fighting is as simple as holding down attack and dodging buttons. It's cooler to watch than control. Tactics for other characters is weak and boring. I don't know how many times I tried to pick up an item, open a door or hop on a chocobo and I jumped 10 times before actually accessing the desired task. You constantly tip toe in dungeons and towns forcing you to sprint and kill your stamina. Just let me run dammit! Summons? Cool but random. Just let me summon them like previous games.

    Graphics - 9/10
No doubt this game is beautiful. There were many moments I had to stare at the scenery before I could carry on. Entering Altissia blew my load. As pretty as the game is, it still lacks the character of previous games. Promto is photographer of the year!

    Music - 7/10
Yoko Shimomura's contribution to the Final Fantasy series fits well. Main battle themes are awesome and the boss battles give you a real epic feel. If you like Kindom Hearts soundtracks, you'll like this one. One thing I hated was the town music. Other than Hammerhead, I found all town tracks to be SO ANNOYING! The redneck themes in Lucis had me muting the game while I was in towns.

    Story - 2/10
Hands down the worst and more boring FF story to date. The original concept from Final Fantasy Versus XIII had me excited. I really wanted to feel like this was a modern Final Fantasy with a touch of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet mixed with the whole "Fantasy based on reality" theme. The relationship with Notic and King Regis is nowhere to be found. So many interesting characters not given a chance to shine such as Lunafreya, Ravus, Iedolas Aldercapt, heck even Arden didn't make as big of an impact. Kingsglaive gives you the background leading up to the game but the game does a poor job of connecting them. The whole Lucis area had me cringing with redneck NPC's and towns. The second half of the game transitions from open world to a much more linear approach but gives you much more story and less redneck BS. Character relationship between the group is ok but I honestly didn't know if Prompto was gonna build up the courage to ask to suck my dick. Either you're gay or not, just stop bugging me with your BS! As a prince/king, Noctis is alright but nowhere near as cool as Cloud or Lightning. I really wanted to see Tetsuya Nomura's version of him.

    Cutscenes - 4/10
Previous FF games made cutscenes feel like a reward for kicking some serious ass. For the first half of the game, cutscenes feel no different than those from a free MMORPG. The second half is better with actual pre-rendered cutscenes. I will say the scene where Lunafreya gives Notis the ring is one of the most beautiful FF cutscenes I've seen in a while.

    Voice Acting - 1/10
Complete **** Everyone in Lucis is a redneck except for one douchebag who has a New York Italian accent. Dude even says cliche **** like "bada bing bada boom" and "fa-get-about-it". I kept pretending Ignis was Balthier from FFXII.

    TL;DR
Beautiful game with mostly good soundtrack killed by lacking story, no polish and an even further push away from the true Final Fantasy feel. Name it something else and it might be seen as a decent game.

    1. The “Open World”
I wasn’t against the idea of an open world final fantasy game. I had played The Witcher 3 prior to this and was very impressed with the open world structure. Everything felt organic, continuous, and although there was a lot of monotony with the design, the regions you entered had a sort of “personality” that went with it. This was not always the case for FFXV. Let me start by saying that yes, the world is beautiful and there is a lot of room to traverse. But in a lot of ways, it’s actually very limiting. Lucis sort of blends together across the board and a lot of it can feel like filler. Even the sidequests can feel like filler, most are a kill or fetch quest. Don’t get me wrong, the scenery looks beautiful, and there are specific areas that deviate from the norm, but there are many times where you’re barred from venturing into certain areas by an invisible wall. And the regions in the open world that you’re exposed to don’t necessarily feel significant and captivating. A lot of it actually looks the same with very little distinction. You find yourself driving back-and-forth across these areas several times feeling like it’s all the same. The exploration also gets cut short after a certain point. In essence, you can go back to it, but what if I want to explore more of the new areas we’re exposed to?
    2. The Storyline
This series has always had a knack for making sure the main storyline took priority. They have definitely shown some major flaws with the way they tell it, but for the most part it felt as though they were trying to create a world with a lot of depth. The problem with FFXV’s story is the lack of depth. I wanted to care about these characters, and be drawn in to an enticing story. But, this game just didn’t manage to do that. The first half of the game drags a bit, and doesn’t do a good job of building things up. It felt as though sometimes they threw in random “sad” moments to try to make the player more interested, but instead it made me realize how little I knew or cared about some of these characters. A lot of the characters were hardly memorable. And in the second half (if you can even call it a half) once things started to gain momentum and depth, the game ends, literally. Lunafreya, Ignis, Prompto, and Gladiolus are all main characters yet their backstories all felt a bit shallow, or had a ton of plot holes (i.e. Prompto’s deep dark secret, what happened with that?) Things are introduced and then hardly elaborated upon. Why should I care about Ravus? What are his motives? And is Aranea good or bad? She just has a change of heart all of a sudden? What happens to Altissia? And why the hell can’t we explore the WoR??! Yes, I am aware of Kingsglaive, but I shouldn’t have to buy spin-off movies and anime cartoon series just to know what the hell is going on with my characters. If you’re going to design a storyline, give us the finished product. This game felt like a rushed job, and it definitely shows. In theory, this plot had so much potential and was actually very interesting, but this game suffers from poor pacing, poor story execution, and lack of character depth/progression.
    3. Battle System/Customization
I really like the battle system in this game. Sometimes it feels a bit button-mashy, and the AI can be super irritating sometimes, but I still really enjoy it. It rewards attentiveness and being on que, and there are a few other things that make the combat feel strategic. I actually looked forward to random battles (which are continuous with the open world). But, the camera easily gets distorted (especially in crammed areas) and if there are multiple enemies, it can be hard to tell who you’re actually aiming for. The customization aspect was fine. There are a few powerful weapons to look out for and equip to your party, but other than that the game felt almost too easy (even by FF standards) and didn’t require much of this. The final boss battle (and most boss battles) were very disappointing and unmemorable. The way they’re introduced tends to run on the anticlimactic side. I want to feel the rush when I’m about to take on a deadly foe, not just be like “oh by the way here’s a boss fight, have fun.” Atleast combat was really fun though, I’m still enjoying it, even with its flaws.

Bottom line: Do I regret buying this game? No. I think it’s a game that has a lot of good qualities, nice graphic design, and solid combat. But, after seeing the great work this series has done over the years, I’m a little sick of playing these newer games that feel like incomplete, rushed jobs.

    Something is SERIOUSLY wrong!
God how I wished this was a Final Fantasy game!!! It is only by name.

If you want to make a flawed action game that:
    i) steals a million ideas from many other games of various genres, however with VERY poor incorporation (cooking, fishing as MAIN SKILLS?) OR
ii) an action RPG with some Final Fantasy momments...

WHY THE HELL CALL IT A FINAL FANTASY GAME?

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
The game's beautiful. I particularly loved the opening scene when the characters arrived in Altissia. Overall, I also liked the design of the world for much this same reason.
The music's also pretty good; though, I prefer the non-Western/Southern sounding pieces (i.e. Somnus as opposed to the music that plays at the outposts). That's mostly a matter of preference than anything else, though.
    Combat can be fun.
While there are very few of them, the tours were a nice addition to the game.
I like side quests, so I worked on pretty much most of them before leaving to Altissia, and subsequently finished those before hitting the point of needing to use Umbra to do anything at all in either Altissia or Lucis.
    Realistic food with boosts!
    Experience bonus at inns.

    Cons:
The side characters are pretty much flat, but I was at least happy with being able to interact with Iris and Aranea, even if they were for short periods of time. Cor, on the other hand, seems randomly thrown in. You see him at the beginning of the game for a short period of time and see him one last time before setting off for Altissia. That's literally it for him.
Lunafreya is supposed to be extremely important (and to an extent, she is), but it doesn't actually FEEL that way. You learn about her through very brief and few cut scenes until eventually Noctis gets to finally see her. But he never actually gets to interact with her, and as the player, we don't get to actually know her. Also, I've seen that her character section in the guide book claims she's much better than Stella, and Luna's supposed to be independent and strong by comparison. Stella was apparently going to be a damsel-in-distress? But, if anyone saw Kingsglaive, Luna doesn't come across this way at all. If anything, she's extremely troublesome and IS a damsel-in-distress in the sense that 1. she needed to be saved from the Empire in the first place by the Kingsglaive and 2. her irrational and stupid behavior got Nyx into more dangerous situations than would have happened had she just stopped trying to wander off on her own. She reasons every time with Nyx by saying she's not afraid of death, which just makes her come across as suicidal instead of actually caring one way or the other about fulfilling her destiny as Oracle. Had Nyx not been with her, there's a good chance Luna would have died, wouldn't have gotten the Ring of the Lucii, and Noct wouldn't have been able to acquire the ring himself later in the game.
It's also worth noting that Luna reasons with Noct's dad that she can't join Noctis' group because this would put him in even more danger as a result of the Empire looking for her. She acknowledges she's a danger to Noct, but, for someone who's supposed to come across as selfless and dutiful, she doesn't seem to be concerned about this in regards to her role in Altissia. Noct and his friends are the ones who have to make sure that 1. there's minimal casualties/harm done to the civilians as a result of the Empire stepping in and 2. that Leviathan causes minimal damage to the surrounding area as well. At no point did Luna consider the people and their homes? Or, if she did, there was nothing to show as much.
In short, Luna had the potential to be a great character, but the little we've seen of her shows otherwise. And her character, for this reason, also seems contradictive/unbelievable.
Then there are the characters from the Empire itself... We see very little of their Emperor (once in Kingsglaive and one or two times in the beginning of the game). Aside from showing some officers in a cut scene that includes Aranea and Ravus, we never see or hear from the other officers ever again. Aranea's decent somewhat since you do get to interact with her here and there. Ravus...doesn't make a lot of sense. Kingsglaive contradicts what is later shown of the character in the game. He also comes across as an antagonist in the beginning, but the game never follows through with this one scene that shows it. Instead, towards the end of the game, he's dead as a result of Ardyn.
A lot of important elements end up taking place off screen.
In comparison to other Final Fantasy titles, the story is extremely short. I only have 100+ hours on the game as a result of side quests and other things on the side. The story itself is probably only between 20-30 hours long, if that.
I also really wanted to explore Tenebrae, but only Lucis is actually explorable. That was disappointing to me.
Also, there's a bit about Prompto being an MT in chapter 13, but this just seemed randomly thrown in. Neither Brotherhood nor the rest of the game even hints at as much.
In terms of combat, the camera can be pretty atrocious. The magic system also is terrible, and I usually refrained from even using it at all. Summons are also random, and I usually only ever get Ramuh.
Prompto's photography can seriously suck at times.

Overall, it's good-ish, but it's not the Final Fantasy it should be.

As a long term fan (over 20yr) of the Final Fantasy series I found this game to be a disappointment overall. While nowhere near as bad as XIII, it is not the franchise redeeming title I had hoped for.

    Gameplay:

I was initially really looking forward to the open world action combat, and at the start of the game I still was, but as the hours passed and the combat remained the same stagnant affair of warping around/block/parry while potion spamming to keep idiot party members alive (they will die to almost everything unless overlevelled), it became clear that things will get no better.

Bosses have absolutely no difference in tactics than normal fights, they have more HP and hit a little harder, that is it. Magic is almost completely useless and boring. You only get 3 flavour of spells, Fire, Ice and Lightning, and using them almost always damages your own party members.

Quests are almost all fetch quests in mmo style, there are only about 20 or so quest givers in the whole world, most have a quest chain where they want you do to the exact same task but in a different location or a harder target each time (e.g. find red frogs here, next quest - find yellow frogs here).

You can undertake hunts to enemies which are more powerful than usual, and while this is a fun diversion you can only pick up one hunt quest at a time, the vast majority of your time spent hunting is the long drive to and from the quest givers, if you could pick them all up at once it would only take you an hour or two to complete them all.

    Story:

The story is definitely a strong point in the first half of the game, but the pacing is completely broken, and by the final half you just want it to end because you realise the developers have rushed the last part and it's no longer any fun.

    Character:

This is a much hyped aspect of the game, with people claiming character development is a strong point. Within the game itself there is BARELY any character development amongst your characters. If you count 4 men making reactive superficial smart ass wisecracks at eachother for hours as development then so be it, but compared to FFX's journey which managed to flesh out 7 characters, FFXV just falls completely flat. They are about as compelling as Vaan from FFXII. The game does a good job at point of soliciting an emotional reaction from the player, but this is due to the situations you are witnessing, you could replace the characters involved with almost any generic puppet and the scenes would still have the same impact.

Despite all of the above, I did have fun with this game (albeit just under 85 hours to do everything without a guide, very short for full completion of a FF game).

However, it severely limits your options as you have no control of the rest your party other than directing them to perform an occasional special and working toward triggering team attacks. Spells are also severely lacking here, consisting of various versions of fire, ice, and lightning. That's right, no Gravity, Demi, Flare, Ultima, etc. In fact, there are no spell casters in your team. Spells are crafted by combining elements with items, and then equipped to one of your active weapon slots. When "cast" they work like grenades, tossed into an area of effect. Then, a cooldown timer restricts you from using another spell for a time.

The open world is very nice to look at. But that world is sparsely filled. Quests are relegated to standard fetch quests that do nothing to further your understanding of the world you are exploring. An optional hunting quest line is also available, but, like other side quests, only serve to grind for xp. You can also only have one active hunt at a time. A curious design choice that will have you spending alot of time traveling (or loading if you fast travel) back and forth between the world and a questing hub.

The story...is not really here. The game plays out in two parts. The first half is an open world playground with meaningless sidequests and very little of the main plot. The second half strips the open world from you and shoves you through set piece after set piece in what feels like a highlight reel of a story. The bits in between these events are never touched upon. Oddly enough, it was the first half I enjoyed the most. This is where you get the funny dialogue between you and your "bros," the three traveling companions and your best friends. Even though there is barely any exploration of your relationship or character development, there are genuinely funny moments. This element of humor and camaraderie is entirely lacking in the second half. It moves so quickly and spends so much time on the events, that you never get to care about the characters themselves. Much of the story isn't even in the game. If you don't watch the movie (Kingsglaive) you'll miss out on what happened during the opening parts of the game. The game really doesn't go into this at all, possibly in an attempt to encourage sales of the movie. If you want to know more about the relationship between the four friends, you have to watch the anime (Brotherhood). Again, a possible attempt to increase earnings by piecemealing out the story among various products?

Customization is also missing here. Previous titles had a plethora of weapons, armor, accessories, spells, skills, items, etc. that could be utilized to your heart's content. Older titles even had optional sidequests that rewarded your tenacity in defeating superbosses or traversing challenging dungeons with some of the most powerful gear and skills in the game. FFXV lacks all of that. There is no armor. There are outfits that change your stats and your physical appearance. However, you pretty much start with all of the outfits you will ever have (a whopping 4 of them per character, 6 for the main character if you pre-ordered). Weapons are very limited. In my journey, I came across maybe five or six of each type of weapon. The gems are the royal arms, weapons only the main character can utilize. These are weapons of the kings of old passed on from generation to generation of successors. They are powerful! But will drain your HP as you use them, so do so sparingly. Accessories, are extremely basic, maybe 10 different kinds, with a host of upgraded versions of them. There barely any active skills and no jobs or classes to speak of. Skills are limited to the specials you can order your team mates to perform when your action bar reaches a certain threshold. You yourself, only get one special attack. That's right, ONE skill. Remember previous entries' skill lists you could learn, or the limit breaks you could unleash? Here, you only get one. It does however, get stronger as you collect more royal arms. You get the idea here, very limited customization. Probably the most restrictive in an any JRPG i've played. JRPGs are known for gear hunting. I get breaking the mold, but breaking the fun ones seems a strange decision.

In the end, this game felt like an unfinished product pushed out too soon due to a long development period and/or excessive financial strain. As an action romp, this game accomplishes stylish (though limited in options) combat, flashy visuals, and a large open world (in the first half anyway). But as an RPG, it severely lacks for customization and storytelling, forcing you into a relentless series of set pieces during the second half that leaves you feeling like you just played two separate games.

The story is terrible nothing happens for 10 chapters then you suddenly have finished the game, combat system is made in the 90' and it's not a RPG at all, magic is boring and a complete waste of time.

Everything that you loved about all the old good FF is not in this game.

I liked it a lot. Its a different FF. The summons are a rulette and this for me its a negative point, but good game. This is why i pointed with 9 the game.

After so many years of development, Final Fantasy XV is not what I expected it to be. The universe is immense and beautiful and the characters are just fine. But the story is short and disappointing and the gameplay suffers from lack of depth. FFXV is a good game, but it can never bring the former glories back to the series.

Even as you reflect on the rarity of a blockbuster that's willing to take real risks, you'll be left with the uncomfortable realisation that ten years wasn't quite long enough, after all. Those jagged edges are, in the end, just a little too sharp. [Feb 2017, p.110]

Despite a divided feel, torn between what it was and what it plans to be, Final Fantasy XV has a lot to offer. If you're a diehard JRPG fan, then it's a positive sign that the series can cross over to a new format. And if you're just looking for an open world adventure, Final Fantasy XV certainly has that in spades, while doing just enough things differently to separate it from the likes of Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls.
