The combat was often a complete disaster in which I couldn't see where the enemy was -- the camera controls in the Wait Mode were often impossible. The only challenging fights were gimmicked -- you had to use a summon to win the fight. The price was also far too high for the quality of the gameplay.

(For context, I completed the game before the first update & got 78% of the trophies.)

I'd like to start out by saying I am one of the biggest Final Fantasy fans of all time. I've played every single FF game since its conception (including the original 6 which was 3 at the time and the original 4 which was 2 at the time) multiple times each. I've cosplayed as FF characters including Cloud, Squall, Cid, Cain, and Vivi at Comic Cons across the US. I even started a league for the Triple Triad card game from FF8. So it hurts my very soul to be putting a 4/10 for this game.

Unfortunately, this game is really not a Final Fantasy game. The story is lackluster and there is no real character development as of yet (and I'm 15 hours into the main story, the half-way point). I loved all of the FF games for their stories, so to have a not-so-compelling story with little character development is a major issue. But that's not the only issue.

You only control the main character in combat, which is, again, a HUGE deviation from previous installments. Controlling only the main character makes you feel far less invested in the side characters and it really takes out a level of strategy that I liked so much in previous installments. It feels like a button masher, beat-em-up game now. Don't get me wrong, the combat IS fun and good, but it's really not a FF combat system with a depth of strategy that I've become accustomed to.

Furthermore, the game seems to have been focused on giving us the current trending gimmick of an open world. They focused so much on it that the other elements of the game mentioned above suffered because of it. Basically this game feels more like Skyrim, focusing on the open world aspects over story-driven content and strategic combat.

Don't get me wrong, Skyrim was an awesome game and one of my favorites, but if I wanted more Skyrim, I'd just play that, or the Witcher 3. When I pick up an FF game, I want exceptional story and strategic combat.

Now, the open world IS great and the combat IS fun, so that's why the game gets a 4/10 from me, but as an FF game it was greatly disappointing. Graphics are also decent, not the best they could be, but not bad at all either.

I hope this review helps some of the die hard fans of FF. If you aren't a die-hard fan, though, and you like open world and a fluid combat system then you'll most definitely like this game. In fact, if this game did not bare the FF name, and it was just some new game that Square Enix was trying out I would have given it an 8 or 9 out of10.

    The Bad.
    - The Story makes absolutely no sense and reeks of cut content.
    - The characters are bland and character development is almost non-existent, with most characters not even introduced.
    - The final six chapters are dire, with incredibly linear environments.
    - Set piece bosses look fantastic but are essentially huge QTE events.
    - Combat is shallow and doesn't evolve as you progress, you hold circle to kill, and hold square to not die, and press triangle to warp into range so you can continue to hold circle to kill.
    - During most battles enemies attack in large packs, telegraphing of attacks is poor, so evading damage is a matter of either luck or just not attacking at all.
    - Companion AI is bad, you have zero control over them, and you'll spend a good chunk of most boss fights either soloing or picking them up off the ground.
    - 9.4gb day one patch (might be higher if buying after the date of this post).
    - Loading times are horrendous.
    - Side quests are almost entirely fetch/kill quests.
    - Chapter 13 is the most tedious, poorly designed section of a game I've ever had the displeasure of playing.
    - The ending.

I simply don't get how you devote that much time to something and have the final product be this incomplete... full of holes and leaning heavily on some CGI movie prequel since the game can't be bothered to spend 15 minutes setting the stage or introducing the characters. This feels more like something that was thrown together in a few months, focusing primarily on combat mechanics and terrain textures over the kind of engrossing storytelling one expects from a Final Fantasy title.

Overall, I played it, I enjoyed it, and it was worth the money I paid for it. That's far more than I could say for FFXIII. Still, this is more of a Skyrim + Shadows of Mordor clone than a Final Fantasy game. The combat is fluid, but way too simplistic. The magic of building up your character over time is lost to a skill tree that is, again, just a SoM clone. None of the choices you make meaningfully change how you play, it's just "gotta catch em all" AP farming through mundane tasks. The quest system feels like the love child of an MMO's "go kill boars" and Infamous's "run around the map and clear all these pre-marked objectives" grind fest. Graphics feel more like remastered previous gen than something developed for current gen consoles. Least likable/relatable FF protagonists ever, and even more forgettable villains. Female lead is reduced to a damsel in distress fetish with no reason to care what happens to her as a character, as her fate is just a (poor) plot point in the male lead's development. The story climaxes far too abruptly, with a Deus ex Machina finish.

Looking forward to the FF7 remake and hoping against all hope they don't find a way to screw that up as badly.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Because this probably matters to some reviewers, I've played all of the FF games from 4-15 (minus the MMOs), and the sequels of the ones that have them.

I'm not sure how to express my disappointment with this game after 10 long years of waiting excitedly, ever since that first trailer quoting Shakespeare and depicting Noctis unleashing hell on the insurgents trying to take over Lucis. We can only imagine what this game would have been if Nomura had remained the director instead of Tabata, if it had vaguely resembled the original Versus 13 story instead of this rebranded one, if it had had the more complicated battle features the early trailers showed conceptualized, and most of all, if fans hadn't thrown an absolutely **** fit over 13's gameplay and linearity (which is no more or less linear than 10, but no one complains about that) and scared the developers into changing a game that was probably linear with a good story into a game that is sort of open-world and has a horribly paced story that feels incomplete and unrewarding.

There were so many moments I was actually confused as to what I was supposed to do next. With the option to screw around doing fetch quests and a main quest line telling me to press onward into the plot, and what level it was appropriate to do it at, I eventually felt that by exploring the world more I was over-leveling and went to go forward with the story. I'd gotten a bit bored of all the dilly-dallying and shilly-shallying watching four men go glamping while the rest of their kingdom is literally at war, so on I went.

Altissia and the Leviathan sequence are perhaps the best part of the entire game. These were the only moments I felt truly moved by the plot in an emotional way, the only moments the events unfolding seemed significant, and even the gameplay of this section was outstanding. The interview with the First Secretary reminded me of the courtroom scene in Chrono Trigger, and despite that Leviathan was basically a no-fail auto-battle, the cinematics and ensuing drama were a spectacle. During the FMV scene with Luna and Noct, I was awe-stricken. The art and visuals made me think "this is one of the most beautiful things I've seen in my life." I felt overjoyed to get to experience something like this.

If only I'd have known that the plot completely falls apart and nothing more rewarding is to come, I'd have considered that the tragic ending and quit the game right there. Everything from here on just made me question what the hell went wrong in the making of this game. There is a time travelling dog that no one but Noctis seems to know about. This breaks the entire story. You are given the option to travel to the past before the events of Altissia. I was so excited thinking the game was about to take a time-travel twist a la Chrono Trigger, and that the guys would realize they needed to do something to change the outcome, to save Luna. Maybe if I collected all 13 royal arms this time I could go back and be strong enough to prevent that tragedy? But considering the high levels required to visit some of the dungeons which house the royal arms, I figured they'd be revisited later in the plot, so I pushed forward. By the time I hit the time lapse and the so-called "final battle" I thought I was at the mid-point of the game and that it'd be a false ending, and I'd have to time-travel and get the rest of the royal arms to get the real ending. NOPE. I finished the game with just 9 of the 13 royal arms, leaving me to wonder, what even was the point of collecting those?

Summons are a letdown, hardly ever seeing them other than Ramuh. Magic was so limited. Look at what Nyx can do with the ring of the Lucii in Kingsglaive (summon the Old Wall), but all Noctis, the actual king of Lucis, can do are a few weak spells that rarely even work on basic mob enemies, and sure as hell don't work on bosses. Really?

The story felt so rushed and so weak after Luna's departure from it, and all the other character deaths were completely unceremonious, happening off-screen and for almost no reason. Ravis's role in the story and motivations are still unknown. And what of the Empire? Did they all turn to daemons? Is the Empire truly a threat that is gone now? Surely they have various levels of rulers throughout the kingdom and aren't gone entirely. What of Noctis's ultimate sacrifice in the end? A Pyrrhic victory: the world gets daylight back and no daemons but the kingdom of Lucis, which is already reduced to a wasteland, literally has no heir to the throne now. So am I expected to believe their continued survival will be peaceful and there won't be continued warring over rulership? We’re supposed to accept all the characters we were supposed to have grown to love (but didn’t get enough backstory or development to love) are all dead but it’s okay because a bunch of rednecks hulled up in Lestallum survived? Yay?! The final "dream" scene was a depressing stab at a happy ending that didn't happen.

The battle system leaves you feeling like you have no control of the battle, nor awareness of it, i'm constantly baffled by my own party's terrible AI and surprised when all of the sudden everyone dies and i honestly have no idea why, or what to do about it, not to mention you cannot focus your attack on one enemy strategically. Battles are boring, you just hold 'O' till it's over and hope you don't have to use too many items to keep your guys alive. Enemies sometimes have brutal knockdown mechanics or simply ARE FLYING and you have no way to counter it, nor any way of disposing of large groups of enemies effectively. You have to create and equip magic spells individually (all of which have splash damage that hurts you), and make sure not to use up weapon slots because you need them for weapons YOU DON'T USE, THAT JUST BUFF YOUR CHARACTER, because there's no armor system.

The story?!?! Jesus Christ. You made a whole movie to set this story up, and halfway through the story, the entire storyline simply vanishes and gets replaced by a different villain, whose actions are barely explained, and none of the old characters get any exposition, nor is there any epilogue.

There is so much stuff in this game that is cosmetic and adds nothing to the game, and so many UI decisions that literally inconvenience the player and force you to wait and wait and wait. Wait for the upgrade, wait for the call, do quests and hunts, spend the night, warp to the car, warp to the rest spot, warp back to town, warp to the parking spot. It feels like a mess, it feels like its not cohesive, it feels like a frankenstein project they tried to smooth over, but could never get everyone on the same page.

This is the Final Fantasy game that was created to attract new fans to the series, not satisfied their old long-standing fans.

Frankly, if you're an old-school fan who is still trying to stay loyal to the title after the fiasco that was FFXIII, this your other chance to walk away. Square clearly gives no **** to the title anymore and it shows on how poorly designed this new game is.

I predicted another FFXIII flop with this title, and as much as it pained to admit, it is another FFXIII flop. I guess that's what happened when you only care about money. Short campaign, bland characters and story, lack customization, you name it.

If you're a new fan who is easily amused by the shiny graphic, go for it. Otherwise, skip the title or wait for a sale. Better yet, get The Witcher 3 complete edition as it was on sale recently.

JWhere do I even begin...... This game has so many flaws its beyond ridiculous. I've seen quite a few perfect or high scores and I can't help but think that SE paid people to review this game. I'll list my pros and cons to give you an accurate picture of the mess called Final Fantasy XV:

    PROS:

    Battle System

The battle system has been streamlined to make it easier for newer players to get used to. As a long time fan of the series I was somewhat disappointed that the battle system was not turn based as we have all become used to seeing. The battles are fast paced and I like that you can change gear mid battle. There is no hard thinking required whatsoever

    Graphics/Scale

The world is pretty big and the environments look beautiful. I'm glad they invested time in making a large scale world that feels vibrant.

    CONS:

    Story

This game has one of the worst and most confusing stories in the entire series. You spend half the game not even knowing what's going on. The first 8 chapters will bore you to death and the last few chapters are each less than an hour. Chapter 14 is nearly unbearable to play through. This is not what I was expecting from a FF game. Narrative is nonexistent, you basically had to watch the Kingsglaive movie to learn anything about the world you inhabit.

    Characters

You play as the lead singer of an emo Jpop band. The 4 main characters are so cliché its pathetic. There is absolutely NO character development for anyone not named Noctis. You spend the entire game traveling with companions that you know nothing about. Even the villains fall flat. Most characters are poorly designed and have terrible voice acting. The majority of characters that you meet suddenly disappear and are nowhere to be found later on in the game with no explanation of what happened to them.

    Battle System

The battle system is basically a button mashing system with one button. You can hold down the attack button and basically win every battle you fight. There is no strategy involved which is very big disappointment. The old FF games had large scale battles that actually felt like accomplishments when you beat them after multiple tries. This battle system has absolutely no soul. Its almost too easy. The magic system is such a chore and you can't even really die. They made it nearly impossible to die which takes the fun and challenge out of the battles. You spend long battles to acquire Astrals that the game gives you no information on how to use so they're basically useless.

    Car

I was expecting a fast travel system/airship that all fans have become accustomed to. What we're stuck with is a car that is a pain in the ass. You can manually operate a car on rails or have one of your companions drive. You can't skip the driving part, you'll spend long spans of time just watching the characters drive from quest to quest. The loading times are ridiculous for the so called fast travel system.

    World

For such an open world concept I was shocked at how empty it is. FF is usually filled with memorable locations that are truly a sight to behold. There is no such thing in this game. You'll spend a lot of time camping and at outposts that all look exactly the same.

    Music

FF is usually blessed with some of the best music of any RPG. This game's music is pretty much forgettable. Not a single track worth replaying. Most of the music doesn't even feel like it belongs in a FF game.

    Conclusion

This game feels like it was rushed. It feels unfinished. There is so much missing from it that I can't believe they released it. I'm sorely disappointed. If you were expecting a true FF game you'll be sadly mistaken. The hype surrounding this game was massive. The trailers all contained content that was not in the game at all. Classic Bait & Switch. You've been warned!

It starts off with an incoherent story. It feels like there are three story arcs going on in the beginning, but none of them result in a satisfying conclusion. Instead, we are sitting through Noctis's road trip. At no point in the game does it feel like a coherent story. Noctis's friends already know each other very well and you only get to know them a little more through a few scenes at certain gas stations. It feels like three or four different stories were patched together to make a game with the final story arc being what should be the real story of the game.

The game allows Noctis to switch between four different weapons and one of those can be magic. The problem is that magic is extremely scarce and hard to come by. If you give it to your allies, they blow all of it near instantly, forcing you to use it yourself. For the most part, magic feels impractical and you are forced to use your main weapons. There are also Royal Weapons that are acquired from tombs throughout the game, but they drain your HP and are thus also impractical.

Combat isn't that good as well. It feels like a dumbed down version of one of Square-Enix's action RPGs. You just hold Square to defend and Circle to attack. Triangle and the D-Pad are basically for special attacks at this point. There just seems to be very little when it comes to combat. I feel like most of the time, I am just defending until I can get a Parry and Counter. Most enemies do not flinch from your attacks, forcing you onto the defensive while they just attack aggressively.

The large world itself is massively disappointing. There are a few diverse regions, but it is populated by a whole lot of nothing, just open fields and if you are lucky, you will see a few monsters. Most monsters are encountered through instanced hunts until much later in the game. You will rarely run into anything in the wild, even if you are deliberately looking for a fight. There are invisible walls around many rocks that appear for no apparent reason, even when you should be able to clearly jump to them. You will spend a majority of the game just watching Noctis and his friends ride in a car as you go from point A to point B. They needed to cut the distance between destinations by like 90%. There was no justification to having such a large and pointless world when you're not even going to populate it with anything.

A big problem I ran into during the course of the game was extremely long load times. When I press Load Game, it takes the game up to two minutes to load sometimes with two separate loading screens. Using fast travel results in massive load times. There are times when the game loads into a black screen and I have to wait even longer before I can move or do anything.

Camera angles are, horrible. Allies block you from going into places and you cant move them or go through them and they also get lost while doing some dungeons because the creators clearly didn't care about Final Fantasy fans when they made this game. Lost all of my respect for Square Enix.

    Let's start with the bad:

MMO style questing. I'm not sure why this is even in an Final Fantasy, but it has no place in a single player RPG. It stretches the game out artificially.

Combat: The combat is easy, but lacks depth. Holding square for automatic dodging seems like a cop out in terms of making the combat fun. The enemies run around in combat and sometimes you have to chase them trying to get the killing blow. Its not innovative or fun after awhile, it becomes more of a task.

The open world design: I understand open world designs are popular with certain games, but I do not think Final Fantasy benefited from it. There is so much open world that there seems to be no purpose other than to hide things or make travelling take time. If the world were condensed it could look better and combat would probably be better due to added time to improve it during development.. They likely spent so much time to make this world and then littered it with monsters to slay. Random encounters in the old games could become annoying, but running around forever in a lifeless open world is definitely worse.

Progression: The ascension chart doesn't give you the depth or flexibility other final fantasies like 10 did. In 10 you could really build a character up the way you want. Here in 15 its pretty limited.

Characters: The game opens with Noctis being a child as his father sends him away. Having seen Kings Glaive and what happens to his father and the capital it made it more bothersome that the main character would be such a child under such serious conditions of war and an arranged marriage to restore peace. Add on that he is travelling with his 3 best friends who all look like teenagers who exclusively buy their clothes at hot topic and I'm not going to care too much about them. Everyone wants to write about how the story is about these 4, but that's trying to pick one positive out of the game and the story and it really should be about the kingdom and over coming evil. When the story is so bad that we try to make the relationships between the characters the reason to call it good its an even bigger failure. Also you don't really see much character growth from them.

There are not great characters that I want to see more of or admire. Go and look at FF4 or FF6. For SNES sprites those characters had more depth than the ones in FF15. Even FF10 had much better characters.

Side Games: Ever since FF6 and FF7 side games/activities have played a big part in Final Fantasy games. Here they seem like an after thought. The arcade games are terrible, time consuming, and not rewarding enough. Chocobo racing is okay, but not great.

That's it for the bad or I will never get to the good.

First good thing is that combat is easy. Anyone can beat this game.

For those who feel RPGs are too confusing this game makes everything very easy. Magic is kind of pointless and Summons make it even easier. Plus you can hide mid combat by hanging at certain points to heal.

The food looks really good and the boosts are nice. Actually the boosts are almost too nice that in some cases it seems like they lowered the players stats to put more focus on the cooking. Seems like they are still coping MMOs a bit still.

The auto pilot on the car is nice.

It runs relatively well, but I do seem the frame rate drop quite a bit.

that's all I have for good.

Honestly this is not the game fans expected or deserved. I feel like true final fantasy fans will have to live in the past because square isn't capable of making good games anymore. When I was growing up they were the top in the industry. Their games were massive and played really well. Square used to be on the cutting edge of graphics and here in FF15 the hair on the characters looks chunky.

I know a lot of people wanted this game to be great, so did I. The fact is that it isn't a great game. I don't care what critics say or release day reviewers. The game is not a 10, 9, 8 or 7. I could accept someone giving it a 6, but anything above that is a lie.

Now I know I'm no authority on this, but check videos on youtube and really look at the game. Don't just listen to the media campaign. We know companies pay for reviews and part of me wonders how many of these user reviews are actually people square paid to give the game a ten. I know that sounds a lot like a conspiracy theory, but square spent too much on this game not to take steps to guarantee its success. We have all seen the power of marketing.

I recommend waiting for the game to drop in price. Its not as good as people are saying. There are far better games made in far less time. Please don't be fooled

Reminds me of ghostbusters for the NES. Another problem is that you can accidentally warp too far away in a battle and if the battle takes place on a bridge you cannot get back up there, it's so messed up. Lastly, they don't bother explaining the plot a lot and this is very confusing. I am very disappointed with you guys. I have been playing ff since ff 7 but no more. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. A game 10 years in the making...where does one even start?

I followed this game for all of the 10 years, my excitement renewed with the bombastic, and triumphant re-announcement in 2013. And yet, as time went on it became clear, that this was becoming less, and less the game I had been waiting for.

Now that I have had a chance to complete it, I cannot help but feel lied to and betrayed, robbed of something I will never know.

The game fails at many things, one of the most important being the combat, the other being the story. To say that the story feels rushed, or hacked to pieces is an understatement. Many important characters have little to no screentime, no time to truly know or understand them, and many seemingly major events happen off-screen, presumably to be sold as DLC later.

The combat is flashy and pretty, but that is the extent of it on a visual level. It is truly a shame given how wonderfully designed many of the monsters and enemies are. This is no Devil may Cry, or even Kingdom Hearts. This game plays like an action rpg, designed by someone who doesn't actually know how to make such games, or even bother to play or test them.

There is very clearly, a supreme lack of meaningful boss encounters, and the huge setpiece battles like Titan and Leviathan are all nigh impossible to lose, and play like something right out of a western game, which are often maligned for being mechanically simplistic and overly cinematic to the detriment of fun, challenging, gameplay.

Many monsters and enemies, have extremely lacking or brief tells to their attacks, and at times it looks as though the monster merely brushes against you in order to damage your characters. This is bad gameplay design, and there is little to no force, or momentum to most attacks, which simply come out of nowhere.

Sidequests are strewn all over the place, but they are so bland and awful, that it is clear the developers took to a quantity over quality approach. The world map itself, is many, many times smaller tha one would have assumed, with an overall lack of variety.

The mass marketing blitz, and such as creation of a custom car, making an entire movie, and a multi-part anime series among other things, all sting and feel as though the money expended could have been better spent on the game itself.

The game's engine is yet another issue, as many areas the game can be beautiful, but at times there are horrible issues with low resolution textures, aliasing, framepacing, and overly exposed or otherwise deficient lighting that drowns out color and detail.

Another big disappointment is in the Astrals, the famed summons the series is practically known for. There are 7 in th game, yet only 4 of which are "usable". Now I have those in quotes, as the conditions to trigger them seem incredibly obtuse, to the point where you can go almost the entire game without summoning some of them.

In addition, one of the most iconic summons, the dragon king Bahamut, has one of the most poorly conceived designs in the entire series, appearing as a humanoid knight-like figure, that does not even use their trademark, megaflare attack. One would think that such an unfaithful depiction, would be outright named differently. This is not the legendary Bahamut of Final Fantasy VIII or IX, which perfected his design, and yet the series seems content to continually ignore and drift away from, always in favor of awful, overdesigned, overly busy and toyetic depictions.

All in all, this may be a harsh review, as there are some things that were good, however the sheer disappointment and dishonesty in just how much has been gutted from the original concept, leaves one bitter.

I have not been blown away by the depth of an engaging tale. I have barely been satisfied...

This is No Man's Sky 0.5 as in it doesn't deliver on many of its promises and many things are just mediocre. Game lacks difficulty, the open world disappoints and is not even that open, often linear en uninspired. Driving cars is plain boring. Combat is just WEAK, I mean, not having challenge is one thing, but this uninspired garbage we've seen 1000 times (and done better) before manages to become stale even before you reach the end of this game's surprisingly short storyline. There is no creativity! There is nothing new... What have they done in all these years? I mean, the game's content IS polished, but that content itself is just nothing to write home about...

The characters are just... awkward, it must be the first time I not only felt no connection, but abhorrence towards them. Bad character development, bad writing... It depresses me to say this, but no person who takes themselves/FF seriously can deny that this is a huge disappointment... Unless blinded by the media's overrating/overhyping efforts (those idiotic "critic" reviews), which ultimately just make this so much more of a let down. It just is NOT that great FF resurrection we all want so much and we better get used to waiting some more...

Three hours into the game I'm still searching for the "Final Fantasy" bit. I think if this game was branded *any other name* (even something like Final Fantasy: Red Dead Redemption version) it would probably be pretty good, but as it stands, I had certain expectations that just aren't being met, at all.
It's missing key elements that Final Fantasy core series (even 13!) incorporated.

The Combat doesn't feel very final fantasy, it feels like Shadows of Mordor. It's pretty good in its own right, just not Final Fantasy. (Final Fantasy Type-0 was a great example of a real-time combat system that still retained a strong final fantasy feel)

The party composition ... well, there isn't any. You're stuck with these 3 dudes all wearing black leather, like the protagonist (PS: You cannot change your active playable character)

Objectively it seems like a fun game, but I loaded it up to play a Final Fantasy game, and after hours of play I was still wanting to play a Final Fantasy game. (In fact, I bought and downloaded FF9 on Steam immediately after shutting down my PS4)

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Hey,
I just finished the game after 32 hours and I have to say that I'm totally disappointed! Most of the time you're just walking around for side quests (the Fallout experience ;). I guess you could finish the main story line in a mere 20 hours.
So, why is this game actually bad? First of all, the story has some pretty strange plot devices. I won't spoil you but there is the sudden and unnecessary death of two characters in the game which has absolutely no impact on the gamer because the characters just don't have enough background for you to get sad. Secondly, something will happen to one of the main characters and it has no connection to the story whatsoever. They won't even show how it happened which is pretty bad for a supposed AAA game. Last, the whole second part of the story is just ridiculously boring. They are building up some bad and tough guys in the movie and the preview just for them not to be in the game. I really don't know what geniuses worked at Square Enix...
I won't critize the action timed press one button bosses. I'm too disappointed in them.
If you're looking for a solid game with a good story line and developing characters, don't play this game. It's pretty nice to look at but that's that.

I will start by saying that I have played all Final Fantasy titles since the 4th, and this one is one of the biggest letdown of the century (placed right by Star Ocean : Integrity and Faithlessness). For sure the graphics are pretty good as well as the soundtrack, but to call this game a Final Fantasy, I am not so sure.

-To begin, it has about 10h of main story, that is half-explained, the rest are all Fetch-And-Retrieve side quests, coupled with never-ending loading times. I mean, if I wanted to play Assassin's Creed/Infamous/Skyrim, that is what I would've played. I will repeat it again, the biggest disappointment is the main story, in his length, weird timeline and lack of depth.
-Secondly, the hype building. I mean, you cannot hype a game for some years, cancel it, then bring it back as this half finished product. And can we say all those trailers we got over the last years aren't representing the product delivered ?
-Finally, the interactions between characters. Yeah Gladio is rough but caring, Prompto is hyper and punny, Ignis is the smart-type, however that is the only depth they all have. No character evolution, no revelation, nothing.

In summary, if this game was from another serie, I wouldd maaaaybe give it like 7/10, but as a standalone Final Fantasy, it deserves a 4/10. I was expecting Squeenix to save themselves with this title, after the whole FFXIII-2-3 flop, but they only went deeper. Take this from a real FF fan, not a open-world-empty-game fan.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I love Final Fantasy! I've always loved Final Fantasy! I enjoy the quirky nature of the narrative which drives the protagonists, if it's to save the world, the girl, the crystal or whatever needs saving in their respective games. I love to hate the weird dialouge, the annoying voice of the ever-present high pitched upbeat female party member. The 'you'll-only-get-it-if-you're-from-Japan' jokes that aren't funny but they are because they're not. Make sense? Even the sounds in the menu, the blips and plings that carry through all the FF games. Yes, FFXIII wasn't what we hoped for gameplay wise, but in terms of its characters and narrative it was very much a FF game. So why is it, that FFXV doesn't feel like FF at all?!
Well, the story is an absolute mess, barely coherent and extremely poorly executed. That any respective writer would attach his/her name to this is beyond me! The true story is actually the story behind the game and it shows! Re-write after re-write does nothing good to any narrative. And to top it off, if you haven't seen the companion pieces Kingsglaive or Brotherhood you'll miss out on huge chunks of it as well. Oh, and if you really want to know everything, you had better be ready to dish out some more money as the DLCs will focus on your companions during the main plot, basically filling in the gaps that made you go "huh?" during the main game. Why does Gladio leave the party all of a sudden? Why does he come back in disguise? Hope you've saved up some dough if you want to find out. A quick calculation: 60$ for the main game, 25$ for the Season Pass and 5$ to rent Kingsglaive (Brotherhood is free on Youtube) so that's 90$ for a game! I'm sorry, but that's just not OK! How would you feel if you saw a movie with several key scenes removed, and the studio then said, "if you want to see those scenes to even get a sense of the plot, you have to pay extra"? The best example of the anti-FF vibe this game gives is all the stuff you can do AFTER the story is done. Yes, after the plot is (somewhat) resolved, the game opens up and even introduces new gameplay mechanics (eg the flying car) and lets you explore new dungeons previously unreachable. Now, there is nothing wrong with expanding a game, quite the contrary, but doing it after the narrative has ended begs the question: why? Why would I want to continue playing when it's all said and done? What's the carrot to keep me interested? FFXV is not Destiny or The Division, it does not need an "endgame" to keep players playing. Are we going to see seasons, co-op play and the like? I doubt it! They could (and should) have made it an original IP since it has nothing to do with the FF brand, save for a few callbacks like chocobos and the like. The developers have said that they intend to patch the game, giving a better pace, fleshing out story moments and the like. So thanks Square Enix for letting us pay to be your beta testers! Maybe in a year or so, the game will be more in line with what the developers intended, but right now it's just an action-rpg and FF should be so much more. So to sum it up, a terrible, amateurish story wrapped in a descent JRPG which calls itself Final Fantasy, but has nothing in common with it's predecessors. Skip this one.

As someone who was still in middle school when "Versus XIII" was announced and became increasingly excited over it's premise; I feel as though I waited long enough to expect a full, complete experience. A decade passed: the title changed, the movie and anime were released, tidbits of combat and story footage were shown and needless to say everyone, including myself were beyond ready. I'm not even a huge Final Fantasy fan in general, never really appealed to me but this one was different. After starting the game, I was pretty engrossed for the first few hours. The world was expansive and intriguing, characters seemed likable and the combat was flashy. However, as the hours dragged on, so did my experience. Personally, I was always more excited about the combat and exploration than the story. But the latter proved to be nonsensical. Minimalism is fine, but when taken to the extreme that is FF 15's delivery, it becomes problematic. And the real shame is how much potential it had to be fleshed out. The story itself isn't terrible, but the presentation is. Even after watching the contextual media that proceeded it; there are countless gaps in logic, multiple times when vital characters leave the entire game for no apparent reason and it isn't explained, and main villains basically meet ill-fates without any exposition as to what happened or how they got to that point. I will say, without spoiling anything, Ardyn was such a fantastic antagonist. But he was the sole reprieve from an otherwise convoluted plot that wasn't given the time or energy it needed to really shine. And "DLC will fix it" is unacceptable; a main story should at least have a plausible beginning, middle and end, especially for a game that was in development for so long and even received extra backstory before it's release. The combat was also underwhelming. The choice to not make triangle a secondary attack button for varying combos, or to even simply give your party different commands for different scenarios; the list goes on and on. The latter really bothered me because that's where 99% of the game's challenge arose from, your invalid party members dying repeatedly in one or two blows later on in the game when you could've easily told them to "defend" when it seemed necessary. Or to focus attacks on your target, etc. Instead, they rush in constantly with no regard for any semblance of tactics and you have to keep reviving them over and over as a consequence. It's not all bad, it can be fun to watch but holding down two buttons for the majority of your experience doesn't really constitute a "deep" overall system. Directional attacks, summons and magic are all implemented pretty well and some of the boss fights are truly incredible. Graphics and sound design are masterful for the most part and the dialogue isn't nearly as bad as I was thinking it might be. The driving is also a mixed bag, while it gives you a chance to soak up the awesome scenery, it quickly becomes a lost novelty as you sit there for minutes on end with dead-silence. The phrase "it's just a shame" resonates so heavily with so many factors of this game and it really is unfortunate. Even comparing it to something such as Wild Hunt; it's night and day in terms of overall combat mechanics, story structure and character development. I wanted so badly to enjoy this game but I am simply not understanding the praise this game is getting. It may be a result of the hype, but when you really examine it, the overall experience is a shallow one. It also only took me maybe 23 hours to beat while doing a decent amount of the primarily mundane side-quests. Felt absolutely no inclination to go back to the game for any reason, traded it back the day I beat it. My apologies for the long-winded nature of this review but I hope it helps some people on the fence about purchasing. I'd recommend renting it first because I know my opinion is the minority and you may really enjoy what it has to offer and I hope you do. I certainly wanted to. Expand

As a long term fan (over 20yr) of the Final Fantasy series I found this game to be a disappointment overall. While nowhere near as bad as XIII, it is not the franchise redeeming title I had hoped for.

    Gameplay:

I was initially really looking forward to the open world action combat, and at the start of the game I still was, but as the hours passed and the combat remained the same stagnant affair of warping around/block/parry while potion spamming to keep idiot party members alive (they will die to almost everything unless overlevelled), it became clear that things will get no better.

Bosses have absolutely no difference in tactics than normal fights, they have more HP and hit a little harder, that is it. Magic is almost completely useless and boring. You only get 3 flavour of spells, Fire, Ice and Lightning, and using them almost always damages your own party members.

Quests are almost all fetch quests in mmo style, there are only about 20 or so quest givers in the whole world, most have a quest chain where they want you do to the exact same task but in a different location or a harder target each time (e.g. find red frogs here, next quest - find yellow frogs here).

You can undertake hunts to enemies which are more powerful than usual, and while this is a fun diversion you can only pick up one hunt quest at a time, the vast majority of your time spent hunting is the long drive to and from the quest givers, if you could pick them all up at once it would only take you an hour or two to complete them all.

    Story:

The story is definitely a strong point in the first half of the game, but the pacing is completely broken, and by the final half you just want it to end because you realise the developers have rushed the last part and it's no longer any fun.

    Character:

This is a much hyped aspect of the game, with people claiming character development is a strong point. Within the game itself there is BARELY any character development amongst your characters. If you count 4 men making reactive superficial smart ass wisecracks at eachother for hours as development then so be it, but compared to FFX's journey which managed to flesh out 7 characters, FFXV just falls completely flat. They are about as compelling as Vaan from FFXII. The game does a good job at point of soliciting an emotional reaction from the player, but this is due to the situations you are witnessing, you could replace the characters involved with almost any generic puppet and the scenes would still have the same impact.

Despite all of the above, I did have fun with this game (albeit just under 85 hours to do everything without a guide, very short for full completion of a FF game).

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Pros:
The game's beautiful. I particularly loved the opening scene when the characters arrived in Altissia. Overall, I also liked the design of the world for much this same reason.
The music's also pretty good; though, I prefer the non-Western/Southern sounding pieces (i.e. Somnus as opposed to the music that plays at the outposts). That's mostly a matter of preference than anything else, though.
    Combat can be fun.
While there are very few of them, the tours were a nice addition to the game.
I like side quests, so I worked on pretty much most of them before leaving to Altissia, and subsequently finished those before hitting the point of needing to use Umbra to do anything at all in either Altissia or Lucis.
    Realistic food with boosts!
    Experience bonus at inns.

    Cons:
The side characters are pretty much flat, but I was at least happy with being able to interact with Iris and Aranea, even if they were for short periods of time. Cor, on the other hand, seems randomly thrown in. You see him at the beginning of the game for a short period of time and see him one last time before setting off for Altissia. That's literally it for him.
Lunafreya is supposed to be extremely important (and to an extent, she is), but it doesn't actually FEEL that way. You learn about her through very brief and few cut scenes until eventually Noctis gets to finally see her. But he never actually gets to interact with her, and as the player, we don't get to actually know her. Also, I've seen that her character section in the guide book claims she's much better than Stella, and Luna's supposed to be independent and strong by comparison. Stella was apparently going to be a damsel-in-distress? But, if anyone saw Kingsglaive, Luna doesn't come across this way at all. If anything, she's extremely troublesome and IS a damsel-in-distress in the sense that 1. she needed to be saved from the Empire in the first place by the Kingsglaive and 2. her irrational and stupid behavior got Nyx into more dangerous situations than would have happened had she just stopped trying to wander off on her own. She reasons every time with Nyx by saying she's not afraid of death, which just makes her come across as suicidal instead of actually caring one way or the other about fulfilling her destiny as Oracle. Had Nyx not been with her, there's a good chance Luna would have died, wouldn't have gotten the Ring of the Lucii, and Noct wouldn't have been able to acquire the ring himself later in the game.
It's also worth noting that Luna reasons with Noct's dad that she can't join Noctis' group because this would put him in even more danger as a result of the Empire looking for her. She acknowledges she's a danger to Noct, but, for someone who's supposed to come across as selfless and dutiful, she doesn't seem to be concerned about this in regards to her role in Altissia. Noct and his friends are the ones who have to make sure that 1. there's minimal casualties/harm done to the civilians as a result of the Empire stepping in and 2. that Leviathan causes minimal damage to the surrounding area as well. At no point did Luna consider the people and their homes? Or, if she did, there was nothing to show as much.
In short, Luna had the potential to be a great character, but the little we've seen of her shows otherwise. And her character, for this reason, also seems contradictive/unbelievable.
Then there are the characters from the Empire itself... We see very little of their Emperor (once in Kingsglaive and one or two times in the beginning of the game). Aside from showing some officers in a cut scene that includes Aranea and Ravus, we never see or hear from the other officers ever again. Aranea's decent somewhat since you do get to interact with her here and there. Ravus...doesn't make a lot of sense. Kingsglaive contradicts what is later shown of the character in the game. He also comes across as an antagonist in the beginning, but the game never follows through with this one scene that shows it. Instead, towards the end of the game, he's dead as a result of Ardyn.
A lot of important elements end up taking place off screen.
In comparison to other Final Fantasy titles, the story is extremely short. I only have 100+ hours on the game as a result of side quests and other things on the side. The story itself is probably only between 20-30 hours long, if that.
I also really wanted to explore Tenebrae, but only Lucis is actually explorable. That was disappointing to me.
Also, there's a bit about Prompto being an MT in chapter 13, but this just seemed randomly thrown in. Neither Brotherhood nor the rest of the game even hints at as much.
In terms of combat, the camera can be pretty atrocious. The magic system also is terrible, and I usually refrained from even using it at all. Summons are also random, and I usually only ever get Ramuh.
Prompto's photography can seriously suck at times.

Overall, it's good-ish, but it's not the Final Fantasy it should be.

At its current state it is still filled with bugs and no where near as polished as it should be. Fighting is as simple as holding down attack and dodging buttons. It's cooler to watch than control. Tactics for other characters is weak and boring. I don't know how many times I tried to pick up an item, open a door or hop on a chocobo and I jumped 10 times before actually accessing the desired task. You constantly tip toe in dungeons and towns forcing you to sprint and kill your stamina. Just let me run dammit! Summons? Cool but random. Just let me summon them like previous games.

    Graphics - 9/10
No doubt this game is beautiful. There were many moments I had to stare at the scenery before I could carry on. Entering Altissia blew my load. As pretty as the game is, it still lacks the character of previous games. Promto is photographer of the year!

    Music - 7/10
Yoko Shimomura's contribution to the Final Fantasy series fits well. Main battle themes are awesome and the boss battles give you a real epic feel. If you like Kindom Hearts soundtracks, you'll like this one. One thing I hated was the town music. Other than Hammerhead, I found all town tracks to be SO ANNOYING! The redneck themes in Lucis had me muting the game while I was in towns.

    Story - 2/10
Hands down the worst and more boring FF story to date. The original concept from Final Fantasy Versus XIII had me excited. I really wanted to feel like this was a modern Final Fantasy with a touch of Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet mixed with the whole "Fantasy based on reality" theme. The relationship with Notic and King Regis is nowhere to be found. So many interesting characters not given a chance to shine such as Lunafreya, Ravus, Iedolas Aldercapt, heck even Arden didn't make as big of an impact. Kingsglaive gives you the background leading up to the game but the game does a poor job of connecting them. The whole Lucis area had me cringing with redneck NPC's and towns. The second half of the game transitions from open world to a much more linear approach but gives you much more story and less redneck BS. Character relationship between the group is ok but I honestly didn't know if Prompto was gonna build up the courage to ask to suck my dick. Either you're gay or not, just stop bugging me with your BS! As a prince/king, Noctis is alright but nowhere near as cool as Cloud or Lightning. I really wanted to see Tetsuya Nomura's version of him.

    Cutscenes - 4/10
Previous FF games made cutscenes feel like a reward for kicking some serious ass. For the first half of the game, cutscenes feel no different than those from a free MMORPG. The second half is better with actual pre-rendered cutscenes. I will say the scene where Lunafreya gives Notis the ring is one of the most beautiful FF cutscenes I've seen in a while.

    Voice Acting - 1/10
Complete **** Everyone in Lucis is a redneck except for one douchebag who has a New York Italian accent. Dude even says cliche **** like "bada bing bada boom" and "fa-get-about-it". I kept pretending Ignis was Balthier from FFXII.

    TL;DR
Beautiful game with mostly good soundtrack killed by lacking story, no polish and an even further push away from the true Final Fantasy feel. Name it something else and it might be seen as a decent game.

My feelings for FFXV are so strong that I actually signed up just to review it. I don't think it's a good Final Fantasy and it's also not a good open world RPG. I got my hopes up after reading good publication reviews but wound up disappointed that it continues to drift further from what I enjoyed from its 90s entries. X was really the last one I enjoyed and I guess this is their version of a modern Western RPG but, even then, it's not as nearly good as their peers. There's some good aspects but, ultimately, too much is shallow and half-baked. I work in the non-gaming software industry and it's very obvious that the product suffered greatly from its multiple reboots and changing of hands. FFXV is not a keeper for me and I'm definitely selling this one back.

+ Graphics are among the best on PS4
+ Open world in the first half of the game is fun to discover, works well enough, and gave me hope for a good game
+ Leveling grid is good. At any point, you can save up points to buy big perks or spend them on lots of smaller ones.

    - Closed world in the second half of the game is where it completely falls apart. There are a couple of sections where all you do is walk through a train and pick up items. After that, the game weaves mechanics into the storyline to physically slow you down. I just wound up being annoyed and frustrated from literally stumbling around corridors for hours. Chapter 13 is so egregiously bad that it took me a week to beat it because I could only stand it for 20 minutes a day.
    - Side quests: A precious few are ok but too many are simply people asking you to go fetch this at a random location, go search a field for that, or go take a picture of something. Why you do this to me? It's not fun. Please have real storylines for side missions.
    - Sometimes you have to ride 5 minutes in the car until you unlock the fast travel point. I just fired up Youtube on my computer to pass the time.
    - Combat: I guess button mashing fighting is the RPG norm now but most fights are mindlessly holding down R2 and circle to spam attacks. Use Protect for a weaker member? Nope. Shell or Wall for defensive buffs? Nope. Link attacks are a good concept but bad camera angles and controls makes it and everything else about combat super clunky and it's not worth the struggle. Status effects are an afterthought. Warping is the best new wrinkle but not enough to make up for everything else. It's all just so shallow and I'm probably the exception but I'd much rather have the complexity afforded by the old menu battle system.
    - Magic: Not necessary and extremely shallow. You'd barely even know it's there.
    - Summons: I heard they exist but I have no idea how to use it.
    - Items: The usual restorative items are essential (potions, elixirs, and phoenix downs) but
    - Story: Rushed and underdeveloped and I actually kind of dislike the main character.
    - Controls: X is the non-combat interaction button to pick up an item, get in the car, mount a Chocobo, etc. It's also the jump button which is a huge problem because it often doesn't realize you want to interact with the environment and so you irritatingly wind up randomly jumping around like an idiot.
    - Party: You can't control the other members and the roles are poorly differentiated so they're all generic to me. They're all melee characters except one gets guns and has much lower health. One guy can take photos and another can give boosts through cooking.
    - I think sometimes the lips were not completely in sync with the dialog. Minor nitpicking but it's a little jarring when I notice it.

the game when you first load in is beautiful... beautifully empty. It's full of vast planes with nothing in them besides rocks and a handful of different creatures. Dungeons are good but also lack monster variety and missed a lot of potential to use warp strikes in them. Characters start off great but nothing really builds from the beginning plot points that should be emotional aren't and ones that shouldn't be are badly forced into trying to be. The game has obvious plot points that were ripped from the game due to time restraints and therefore ruins any story that it could have had.

the combat system was really fun when I first started playing it but after about 50 hours into it I realized i wasn't really doing anything when i fought besides holding down the square button and doing the super easy parries. Boss battles had no strategy and bigger ones like the summon battles were insultingly bad... I'd rather not have them in the game at all.

I know they're apparently supposed to be patching a lot of the problems I have with the game but that is too little to late for me. I don't find it acceptable to release something not finished and missing core elements just to add it to the game months after release... I've already beat the game and spent over 250 hours trying to find things to love that weren't there. I'm not going to play it again no matter how good it might be in a year from now.

I wanted to like this game, but I struggled with whether I should give it a 5 or even rank it lower. I've been a huge fan of the Final Fantasy games since the first one on the NES, but the quality in recent installments has gone down dramatically from the heyday of the series, especially gameplay/story. So, let's get into some more details:

Graphics - 9/10 : It goes without saying
I wanted to like this game, but I struggled with whether I should give it a 5 or even rank it lower. I've been a huge fan of the Final Fantasy games since the first one on the NES, but the quality in recent installments has gone down dramatically from the heyday of the series, especially gameplay/story. So, let's get into some more details:

    Graphics - 9/10 :

It goes without saying that an A-list title should really have pretty amazing graphics and I think Final Fantasy delivers on that. The cutscene graphics are great. The overall character/enemy design is great and the graphics of the action scenes look really fluid. The world looks beautiful and well designed graphically. There really aren't any complaints that you could make about the graphics.

    Open world - 6/10 :

Decent open world environment. Two main factors contribute to the reduced score here. First, the open world is very empty. You can run (or drive) a LONG way without actually contacting any enemies. Thankfully the game doesn't really require grinding or this would be an even bigger detractor. Second, there isn't a huge difference in environments. You eventually end up in some caves (like the ice cave) or swamps, but in general the vast majority of the open world area is very similar and consistent geographically and design wise. It's beautiful, but just isn't very exciting.

    Character development/story - 2/10:

It's hard to believe that the same company that put out amazing stories like Final Fantasy 2, 3 (SNES versions), 7, 8, 9, 10, and 12 can't manage to put together a decent story with decent characters. Even Final Fantasy 13, which had a difficult to understand story, was light years ahead of this game in regards to character development and overall story arc. I know many people have noted the "boy band" quality of the 4 main characters and it is true, although I think boy bands actually have better characterization. You never really learn much about those 4 characters apart from the main character. They are all just kind of there, with the main character having slightly more characterization. You don't really care about their pasts or their motivations. They are just bland. If you expand out to other characters, you learn even less. There are characters that should be important to the main story that you only see in fleeting moments then never see again. The lack of diversity among the characters is also pretty clear, spending most of the game with 4 guys, never really spending much time with anyone else. Would have been wonderful to have a non-human character or even just a female character that you got to play as or be a part of your team for at least a little while. Overall, it felt like a major lost opportunity in the game.

The story is pretty unintelligible and confusing. Perhaps if I had watched the Kingsglaive movie it would have made more sense, but I don't think that you should have to watch a prequel movie to be able to enjoy the story of the game. I never played a single Witcher game, but easily followed along with Witcher 3's story and characters, clearly being able to understand and figure out relationships and feelings between the different characters, really caring what happened to them. I just didn't care about any of these characters, even when the big "shock" moments occurred. They just didn't seem to feel like they needed to make an exciting or interesting story.

    Gameplay/Combat - 4/10 :

Hope you like driving a car on an empty road (or just having it autodrive for you) for long periods of time. I don't think I ever played a game that contained so much waiting to go from place to place. Perhaps if there was more to do along the way it would be more exciting. The main quests are pretty straightforward and move reasonably quickly, especially once you get out of the open world. The side quests are pretty much MMO like. You goto point A, collect item B, and return to questgiver - rinse and repeat - over and over. Not much story for the sidequests either, especially compared to a game like Witcher 3..

Combat, like the story, just didn't seem to matter. It's basically pressing or holding 1-2 buttons over and over again. Magic is mostly useless because you'll hurt your own teammates whom you can't really get out of the way as you have little to no control over them. For a game that wants to be an "action" RPG, it just never felt like you had to do much. Contrast that with Witcher 3 where you had multiple options and ways to play. The leveling/advancement system really never seemed to matter much and many of the options required far too many AP to be worthwhile.

Overall, a disappointing game, failing to live up to any of the Final Fantasy games that went before it. If you're a fan, maybe you might find it worth playing. I won't say I hated the game, I just wish they had called it something other than Final Fantasy, because this wasn't a Final Fantasy game.

First off, don't really like the reality based theme with the route 66 and all. Where are the beautiful fantasy worlds that you get to immerse yourself in like you often times do when playing the FF games? There's just one huge "hey y'all" area with hours of walking around, driving a car with real-time minutes going by and even the chocobos don't really help. You're just bored, utterly bored.

But hey, how about the side quests? Those are always fun in a FF game right? Wrong. Go to the science lady, pick up some frogs. Go to her again, pick up frogs. And again and again. If you get tired doing that, go to the dog tag guy and pick up some dog tags. Over and over and over again. Yeah but there are hunts aren't there like in all FF games? Yes, but you can only pick up ONE at a time, so good luck going picking up hunts individually from all around the hey y'all-world. Well, you can always take the car to pick up hunts, it only takes maybe 8 real life minutes or so. Or you could go do the fishing side quests and sit there an hour and thinking nothing is happening and I'm hating this game. Fishing, what a nice side quest. Not.

Leveling up. Oh I love it, it is so addicting!! Well, not in this game. Actually, there really isn't any fun in leveling up. Ascension grid? Yeah it's there. That's about it.

Acquiring new weapons and spells, that's also fun in FF games. This games gives you the option of, oh about 3-5 weapons from which to choose from per character in the entire game. You're welcome. Actually you're lucky there isn't so many choices, comparing your old weapon to the new is difficult, since the screen is really poorly constructed. Spells, nah, don't bother, they're consumables and will very likely hurt you too if not kill you in combat.

The storyline in short is uninteresting. The only time I got excited was the zombie-apocalypse like warehouse, only to find out that this is about it, the story is about to come to an end. I thought I was maybe half-way or not even that. And then Noctis gets a moustache. I mean wtf? At that point I stopped believing in this game and quit playing.

The graphics are nice at least. But there's no addiction to this game and when there's no addiction, it probably isn't a very good game. I mean why else would you play a game, any game? Because it's addictive and you want to keep on playing on and on because it's so fun and addictive. If you're like that, then there's nothing for you in this game.

Summons are also unnecessarily difficult. The open world is huge, but mostly empty, lacking in meaningful side quests, stories or characters. Also, traveling is really boring and can it can take a very long time to drive from point a to point b, where if you travel at night and hit a monster on the road, you are forced to stop and fight the monster. Awful and disruptive.

Worst of all with FFXV is the story. Awful, terrible, abysmal. Several plot points are left out, it's hard to know what's fully going on if you don't watch a movie (what?!), and the twists are all lame. This is easily the worst plot of any FF game.

I give this game a 4 because the post game content is excellent (somehow I finished this game... not really sure how). You gain the ability to travel in a much faster and easier manner, and there are plenty of legendary weapons, dungeons, and large bosses that are actually really fun. I thought this game was a complete disaster until this part of the game.

But even then, good post game content can't save a terrible game. The repetitive, boring contact lacking in RPG elements and horrendous story make this game my most disappointing of 2017. Not worth playing by anyone, even the most hardcore FF or action-RPG fans.

For example you can beat the crap out of an enemy with a weapon that said enemy is resistant against. That makes no sense. All in all the gameplay lacks any kind of depth.

Story: Its really an overly simplified story and pretty straightforward most of the time. However the story and especially the characters really lack the substance. And the characters arent really likeable either. Gladio is like a pregnant woman who's on her moodswings. I mean literally,on the mission of receiving the gods blessing he goes from "STFU U PIECE OF WHINY SH*T" to "I actually care deeply for you my love" in the span of 2 seconds. Ignis barely has any character in the base game and is only there to be the great tactician although he only states the obvious..."ignis,how should we infiltrate the base?" "Well,we should take them down 1 by 1...BUT,without them noticing" wow 10/10 mastermind right there. Prompto is...well I kinda like him but only because he has actual emotions, like he is the only one that gets proper character development in the base game. But the main character? Noctis? He is the worst of all,he is whiny, takes everything too seriously and just tries too hard to be HIP & "cool". Many people say he is like that because he has gone through much sh*t but thats not true, many things are literally granted to him. And I know that cloud from ff7 or squall from ff8 were emo-ish as well but at least they had a f*cking reason to actually be emo; cloud was literally mind-raped by an extraterrestial lifeform, fell into the earths core, fought another replica of the alien, got stabbed and pierced multiple times and was even a disabled person in a wheelchair and you call him emo? He at least has every f*cking right to be so. Same with squall,he had a reason to be the way he is,but noctis? He lived a royally comfortable life with no problems or challenges and even on his journey he seems to not even care for the world or his people. Hell he wasnt even enraged beyond chapter 3 after he found out his empire has fallen. Its not until the end that he cares, its like the writers thought to themselves "oh lets just put in a timeskip and call it 'character development'". The ONLY thing I can give credit for is that the main bad guy in the game is written so well, his lines are perfect, his voice so soothing and his character is so full of himself while being so dangerously evil. That is the only interesting character but honestly if they sticked to the original versus saga like how it was supposed to,then it'd have been much better imo. Again the story as well as the characters are pretty underdeveloped and its even worse if you followed the game faithfully over 4-6 years. Those faithful fans were promised a game with the versus saga but got a skimmed down version of something noone knows about or even asked for. Its a big "f*ck you" to every faithful follower who followed this game over at least 4-6 years.

Its kinda like getting promised to marry someone but you find out that your fiance cheated on you on the day of your wedding after so many years. Thats how I felt when I played through 15,betrayed and hurt as a longtime fan. And I'm only 19 years old so I'm not a cranky old dude either.

There is another button that you press to warp across the screen and strike your foe from a distance, but that's basically it in terms of offensive maneuvers.

Speaking of boring, the game lets you watch a car drive through the scenery to travel the lands of Whateverland. You can not steer the car other then turn left or right at crossroads. It's on autopilot for most of the time and you just watch as it drives down the road and listen to the childish banter between the characters inside the car.

The quests are tedious, and literal fetch quest. The same guy will send you to different spots over and over again to collect dog tags for example. These quests just boil down to a few minutes of watching the car drive, arrive at the general location, go to the map marker, fight a small group of easy creatures, pick up the dog tags and watch the car drive back to collect your reward.
Other quests make you comb through an open area to find and collect small things. These quests will test your patience and have you running in circles over and over again, looking behind every rock until you finally find the last little quest item.

There are a few noteworthy things, like nice graphics and animation. Some of the bigger creatures look good as well, but the combat in this game is just so bad that it doesn't matter what you're fighting, it feels meaningless.

Add to all of this a shallow story, bad voice acting and overall strange moments like you and your party riding on the back of pink birds while acting like a group of eight year olds, and you know why after 12 hours of forcing myself to keep playing, I eventually just quit.

At least XIII had more fun exploration in the end, whereas XV whole world just feels empty and boring. No extra characters really except maybe a sexualized mechanic with boobs on your window, yep thats bad.

At the first point of no return, i felt like the game was over, that boatride to Altissia made me think something weird was going on with this game and sure enough: Time Travel.
Probably the worst idea Squeenix can come up with.
I really enjoyed the pace of the story until then, Titan was my favorite part.

I like this game and put 100 hours into and enjoyed maybe 40-50 hours of it, the rest i regret playing honestly.
Example the menu is super offputting and the battle system, repeatitive side quests and nothing to do but jump around blue shinies because they failed to have seperate buttons for picking up treasure and jumping and chocobos cant even pick treasures, which makes the chocobo travelling so much worse.

Even X-2 has arguably the best battle system in the whole franchise but this one has to be the poorest, i mean you cant die !
Way too easy and the camera goes everywhere. The staff even know the flaws so they tried to fix it but they couldnt.
I rate the extra chapters alot higher than the game, also the Kingsglaive movie and the Youtube episodes. All were amazing and got me pumped for this game but its just failed miserably.
Episode Prompto was the best thing in this game, i give that one 9/10, i mean its supposed to be short but its so well done, i wish they did the same thing with the game except just rehash areas and another gas station.

On a Final note, what makes FF great is the music, characters, storyline, crazy battle mode, customizations, exploration, travelling by land or flight and so many things to do but this game tried and failed.

    1. Music was decent, i will not bash that but it wasnt amazing, however they did add MP3 which was a fantastic idea, so music wise, sure they tackled that one.

    2. Characters were only 4 in the game, there wasnt alot of other people. I mean sure without going into confusing plotholes, antagonists were a few, and one of them showed up often. But all in all, not rich in character building or interactions, except between the 4 and the antagonist harassing them.
You see interesting NPC's but its very shallow, thats why i liked the extra episodes because Cor and Aranea got alot of screentime.

3.Storyline is super promising, especially due the movies and episodes earlier but it falls flat and has so many plotholes and random things its ridiculous. Staff tried to fix it but didnt succeed since its already been released and its a mess. Regarding the end however, it was a decent fix.

All in all i liked the game 40%, but the the only way to die in this game is by flying the Regalia, it was the only challenge in the game and new Game plus would be even easier since enemies will still be pathetically weak.
And the loading times are so bad, im pretty sure no FF game has ever had loading problems but this one sure has them.
Honestly if those would be fixed and the jump button while picking up treasure, along with harder enemies on new game plus, i would rate the game maybe 7.

The usage of assets, and random product placement like the cup noodles is unneeded and it feels as if the game is a conglomerate of random ads.

The story sucks. It's supposed to be a story of adventure and freedom, yet some of the moments which are supposed to be the most impactful like Noctis's dad being dead just doesn't mean sh!t. He just learns about it from a paper, and that's about it.

The DLC/merchandising practices oh god almighty....
Well the fact that the rest of the episodic DLC arcs got sh!tcanned doesn't help, but the fact that they were episodic is a problem FOR THIS EXACT REASON. Next thing was making important plot/story points either from that anime, the movie, or some other bullsh!t SE decided to do.

Overall this game is a mediocre disappointment with awful practices, and we waited 10 years for this sh!t?

What a really underwhelming game. From early on it's obvious that the formula was created first, then they tried to wrap a story-line over the framework. Also I found the battle and magic systems simplistic and boring.

The open world is fun, and I enjoyed the interactions between the four lads. That is until the repeated dialogue began to grate. There must have been 50 recipes for Ignis to learn, and for each one he recites this same line, followed up with "I'll taste test for you." Each time! The witty dialogue that the team have throughout the world is soon repeated over and over, removing any sense of realism.

The most frustrating part is the overall story. There isn't one. It's the most bare-bones story I've ever seen in an RPG, especially a FF game. We get introduced to a love interest through 2 or 3 cut-scenes, and are expected to care about her. Once she does turn up you couldn't care less about her relationship to Noct. The whole thing is a mess, but frustratingly it had potential. With a better writer in place this could have been a world worth delving into.

Another huge gripe I have is the side quests. They are the most simplistic I've ever come across. Be it the "find me more dog tags," or the "take this photo," they're the laziest type of fetch quests you'll ever see. There isn't one single side quest that I'll remember 6 months from now.

The sub-characters are given nothing in terms of character growth. There's a point where one of the pals looks like he might betray you, then by the next chapter it's not even a thing any more. There's a hint that one character might have a link to something supernatural, then it's confirmed in the last few chapters, then left alone. It's so incidental that it's barely even a sub-plot. And the final lad gets nothing. I believe these sub-plots are delved into in DLC, but I'm not having that.

I'll always remember the Barrett story-line in VII where he has to fight his old friend for his daughter, and the Auron story-line from X (no spoilers, just play it if you haven't). It's a shame this game didn't have something similar.

There are some great little touches in this game. Placto taking pictures as you go along is a lot of fun, and being able to save your favourites is a nice touch. The cooking aspect is also cool, and pushes you into finding harvest spots to try to come up with new recipes. It's just a shame that these fun innovations came in such a lacklustre game.

Final Fantasy 7 and 10 are two of my most beloved games. To see this as the evolution of the genre is incredibly disheartening. I hope the next instalment focused on story rather than a gimmick.

The consent of calling down the gods is bad*** in the story until you realize the option to do it comes up so often in battle you don’t even need to fight sometimes and should have just been a cutscene only thing, and your friends become real jerks near the end and most of their plots are in DLC.

The gameplay is mostly just fetch quests that require you to spend time walking through empty, brown landscapes to get an item or kill a monster and come back. If the battles were better it would be more forgiving but it is most just getting out of dodge to heal, mashing X, and repeating.

Yeah the music and graphics are good, but if you are just playing for those then just go watch a movie instead.

The proposal of the game is good, but the execution is not satisfactory. The game is very repetitive and there are no differences between the cars although it is a free game it could be better worked with more game modes. Overall it is a game that you will play once with friends and then forget about it.

    I'll start by the pros:
    - The graphic is really amazing
    - It has one of the best ost I have ever heard in videogames - The villain is really one of the best in FF's history
    And that's it.

    The cons:
    - The open world is lifeless, boring to explore and not rewarding. - The story might be good, but it is told in the worst way possible, its really hard to understand it without watching any video online. Many things happen and you dont know why. The ending was really amazing, and that makes you angry, because only in the end there are good scenes, and there are some emotional scenes that you just cant feel them, because the game did nothing to make you like the characters.
    - Combat is just boring. You can finish it by using 2 buttons and if you are dying you can easily revive your team.
    - The subquests are really bad, boring and basically useless to complete. There are too much of them and most of them are not that rewarding, plus they add like nothing to the story.
    - The second part of the game was different from the rest of the game. From an open world it becomes a very linear game. - Regalia. Thats the car you can explore the world with. It basically drives alone, you dont have to do anything special if not moving it. Many times it takes ten minutes to go from a place to another and more than once i didnt pay attention to the game and just waited those minutes to arrive at destination...

Final fantasy XV is a game that really suffered its bad development, it could have been one of the greatest game of all time, but there are many missed things that just cant be unseen. I really wanted to enjoy it, but it felt like the game did nothing to be interesting in any way.

The best music is the CD's from the previous games you can buy ingame. The story is... OK? Like a summer blockbuster. It has enormous plot-holes and is in general not interesting. The world is huge, beautiful, and mostly empty. In the beginning the characters talked together in the car and held interesting, character building conversations. Past the midpoint they just... Sit in silence and stare at their phones. Much like I ended up doing. And then I stopped playing.

I'm disappointed, and frustrated that some parts shine while overall it's just so utterly average an experience.

Update: I lied, I had not cleared the game when I posted the update, but though the game could not disappoint me any more than it did, oh was I wrong. Messy story, does not move me an inch (i shed a tear over puppy videos on youtube), just a bad, bad game. I like japanese games, the Tales series are fun, I like close to cringey japanese story moments in anime and games, I like MMO quests to a certain degree, but FFXV just doesn't do it for me. The game quickly funnels into a linear nightmare towards the last quater of the game, and here the nightmarish mess that is the combat camera becomes clear. According to the amount of praise this game gets it seems I just don't like Final Fantasy any longer, my love for the franchise died with FFX.

You basically run through dark hallways constantly re-using the same textures and enemies by yourself, because the MC Noctis got separated from his bros. It's not fun.

For the half of the game that is fun, it's not great, just good. You have an illusion of a big world to explore, but if you go off the beaten path for even a moment you will run into invisible walls and such. You are not meant to explore this world, but stick to the main paths. The combat, honestly, is pretty bad in comparison to some rival RPGs, so that wouldn't be a big draw to keep me interested in the game. The fishing minigame is not very well done... it just kinda... blah in most of the things it attempts to do. For instance, there's this big emphasis on the car. Is it fun to drive the car? Nope. It pretty much drives itself. SO WHY? It's my opinion that the best games have a gameplay first mindset, but this game just makes how things look the priority.

Why can't I jump on top of the hood of a car? There's an invisible wall there. Plastic lawn chairs are like cemented down, and can't be moved. The day to night cycle is so fast you can't do much before nightfall.

You know what? Actually it's not half a "good" game, it's half a mediocre one. That makes it about a 3/10 by my math. Don't buy this thing for full price.

Final Fantasy is renowned for its diverse characters and worlds, in FF15 there are only 4, and they look like a Japanese boy band all sporting similar dark coloured outfits. Very little thought went into the character designs this time. As for their characters, they’re pretty generic and uninteresting.
The combat is just boring, you’ll spend a lot of your time mashing only 2 buttons and there’s very little preparation spells or buffs that are actually useful. I basically button mashed through the second half of the game as I became aware of how shallow the combat is, the game became a chore to play.
The open world, is just as disappointing as the generic characters, bland and barren with the occasional small “town” not once was I impressed with the world.
The story simply doesn’t make sense, and I don’t mean it’s cryptic, there are literally huge plot holes, unexplained circumstances that really ought to have been, it’s obvious the developers ran out of time and didn’t actually finish the game.
As for mini games, fishing is quite good fun! In fact, the fishing was my favourite part! But that’s it for mini games that are actually fun.
To conclude, FF15 in my opinion, is not a Final Fantasy game, it’s a broken wannabe FF game that tried to appeal to a broader, more casual gamer but ended up a complete mess.

There is no difficulty at all, being a hit and run or hold square and hit when you should.
And to sum it up they change the rule of the gameplay (second life bar when you can only use item) on the last fight which is really poor game concept to say the least.
The story is nice and the character mildly interesting that is all the pro i could come up with after 50h of gameplay.

Once you get on that boat the game goes from a beautiful open world game with tons of things to explore and do, to an incomplete, boring, dark, depressing dungeon crawler. Like many FF games there is a major event that occurs that completely changes the landscape of the world. However, typically those games still allowed you to explore the world after the event and find and complete quests. In this game you literally and figuratively get put on a train with a one way ticket to a very disappointing ending. The story introduces a ton of interesting characters who are both good, evil or neutral. Then the game completely ignores all but 6 of them. For most of them you are not even sure if they die, they just disappear like they never existed. There are also many aspect of this game that are simply broken, for example every time you want to pick something up, open a door or interact with anything you must pause near the object for a moment before hitting the "x" button or your character will jump like an idiot and waste a second of your life. Most of the side quest in the game are boring and repetitive fetch quests. The combat system is basically Dynasty Warriors with a counter option that only works 50% of the time. Magic hurts allies and enemies equally and has to be manually setup repeatedly so its more of a pain than a benefit. The game is so in love with itself that it plays a unescapable cutscene for every simple tasks. Just the most disappointing game ever. Just writing about my experience has made me depressed again. On a less joke-y judgement(which is still true though, I did not lie to you), the game feels EXTREMELY poor. -from what I could see 6-7h into the game, apart from some spellcrafting which was a bit neat, there is ONE special attack(a very long distance lunge) in the entire game

characters: it's a boy band with the Big Guy, the Smart Guy(he has glasses so he's smart), the Annoying Guy, and the King Without A Throat, due to spending too much time whining with it. So Raphael, Donatello, Michelangelo and no Leonardo.

They're bad? I mean, I think the setup speaks for itself: a prince gets his country robbed, his dad is dead, so he takes his boy band childhood friends on a road trip to kill bad guys and succeed at Trials. They're not so "bad" as they are so Nomura it hurts. This man is a living cancer due to always cramming whatever "looks cool" together in the most ridiculous of mishmashes, and I gotta say, the boy band childhood friends is quite beating everything he's done before, even Tidus or Snow.

    Battle AIs:
A lot of the combat is done against massive mobs. When you die, you don't "die" quite, you can get tapped on the shoulder by a friendly AI to get back with a portion of HP.
They don't do the tap. They take an insanely long amount of time to do it and it can mean death a lot of times.

    Driving:
I think my intro was quite clear, but in case it wasn't abundant: this is an open world where you can't drive, only watch. If you drive, you'll quickly regret it as it's pointless and will cost money to repair the car. Also, driving warrants you no battles, so you'll literally waste untold hours just waiting for the damn car to reach its goal. When you get off and go on foot, it's also long and boring, but there's mobs and thus fights. The walking around in a Just Cause 2 size map is as atrocious as you can imagine, although at least you can farm EXP.

    Battle Gameplay:
As I said fights look really good and feel very dynamic, so that's great. But between the battle AIs that don't rush to save you and instead stumble around, the "protagonist is dead = game is over" crap that was into XIII, was hated, was fixed in XIII-2, and now is brought back by whatever inflated ego at Squeenix who thought it was a great idea like some Lucas forcing Jar Jar Binks into people again and again, the ONE special lunge attack and everything else is just spamming your weapons and crafting some AoE spells WHICH DAMAGE YOUR OWN PARTY by the way, and the general feeling that when you're against many foes you're often cornered into lunging in and out to not get mobbed, and having no reliable AoE attack, I'd say this feels good, but it is extremely underdevelopped.

    -Storytelling
I could make an entire thesis on why Nomura and his team of ***wits are absolutely cancerous to videogames, and especially to proper storytelling. As I said the Cancerman is unable to not cram something in as long as it looks cool. Even if it's utterly stupid, he'll cram it. The Boy Band Childhood Friends King Ninja Turtles Who Must Get The Holy Weapons To Save The World probably exemplifies it.
But instead of a thesis, I'll say this: out of the 4-5 hours I've seen of this, there wasn't a single time, not once, where the story wasn't told through flashbacks. Not once. The only story part that wasn't a flashback was when Titan attacked the party. The rest is either dropped(IE doesn't become a story), ignored or is just quest-giving.

I have played every FF from IV to XII save for X-2 and XI. And XIII and XIII-2.

This is the laziest storytelling of them all.

It almost feels as though square enix got greedy after supporting the development cycle for ten years and what was supposed to be all in game ended up being slaughtered into seperate elements eg; movie, dlc, season pass, game etc. If all of this was in the game as with the good old days it probably would have been amazing. The car can only be driven by the predefined routes and under the safety standards, you can not maneuver fun with it.

The combat system, although visually appealing,it's only press one or two buttons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The final fantasy franchise was built around characters and stories. Multiple characters gained our affection, both villains and heroes, Sephirot, Zell, Stainer, Mika, etc. Every time I played I final fantasy game I prepared my self for some of the most joyful hours of my life. This was not the case.
Final Fantasy XV is shallow, the characters are not developed, the story is poorly presented and incredibly short, the world is absurdly small with one area, one city and one linear dungeon, giving the player no sense of exploring a world.
One of the greatest tools for a story teller is empathy, I felt none for the characters or the world, except the very last moment, where a Father must kill his son to save the world, that moment was good, but only because of the Movie.
The game play and graphics are the only good thing about the game, that's why it gets 3, but those things should come in second, because I still love to replay any final fantasy previous to X, but sure as hell I won't replay final fantasy XV ever.
    Disappointed.

During one mission you are tasked to capture an imperial officer. After you capture him a party member sais that he is taking him back to base only to tell you seconds later that he escaped. Even better: there was no reason to be on that mission in the first place. You simply get told to capture that dude by your party members and after he escapes it is like this mission has never happened.
Cheap attempts of tragedy. Killing characters you have no reason to care for does not make an emotional story.
Why have different costumes if your start with 3 additional custumes for each character that have worse attributes than the standard one? Only one costumes is obtainable later. Did the 3D artists run out of time?

Walking cliches as characters. You play the moody teen boy traveling with the loud and friendly 'big guy', the 'mature' nerd who wears glasses (in case you don't notice he is the nerdy guy) and the annoying and kind of simple minded guy who wants to take selfies all the time.
    Weird out-of-character behavior during cut-scenes.
There is no reason for having a party. Only one character can be controlled. The others don't have a role in the plot. There is no dialog except senseless banter.
Your companions are incredible one dimensional and don't have anything interesting to say after the first one or two hours.
It feels like the intra-party dialog was implemented before the story was written so the dialog doesn't have any connection to the plot.

At one point. Noctis gets told that he can freely choose which three of his party members he wants to put on 'evacuation duty'. He cannot pick himself because he must fight the monster. Which three of his three companions might he choose for this important task?
It is obvious that a bigger party system was planned but scrapped and the remnants are still all over the place.
Glitchy 'interact' button. Every time you want to interact with something you will jump first because there is a tiny amount of velocity left. There is more than one button on the gamepad. Use them, dammit!
Side quests are a bad joke. You can only run errants for shop owners etc. There are no side stories whatsoever. Weirdly, you don't talk to the shop owner to start a quest. Instead you interact with some arbitrary item in his vicinity. I know its not a big deal but its so weird. Especially with the super glitchy interaction button.
The world is empty. Almost all quests amount to a bad walking simulator. No monsters, no treasures, no nothing. One level is a literal walking simulator on a train. Just walk for 10 minutes. Nothing to do. No one to talk to.
The world doesn't feel big. It feels like your running around the same diner for the whole game. Every place has the same side quests.
It feels like a camping trip instead of a journey to save the world. Plus: invisible walls everywhere.
Horrible 'level-design'. Some places look like a $10 asset flip on Steam.

A combat system that is basically one continuous QTE. There is no challenge. Press 'evade' until the parry event triggers. Then press Attack. Continue until everyone is dead. Works for hordes of weak enemies and huge bosses alike. Party members are simply a decoy.
Your player level and equipment hardly even matters since you are practically invincible while pressing 'evade'. Fights will take a bit longer. That is all.
Inconsistent cover mechanic. Why have a cover mechanic when nothing can be used as cover. A tiny piece of rock? Sure. A wall? Nope.
Broken as hell 'Wait' mode. Boss fights wont work with Wait mode because occasionally you have to wait for the boss to do something. That doesn't work if time stops when you do nothing.
    Unresponsive controls.
Glitchy lock-on mechanic and completely broken camera system.
The game has a surprisingly elaborate cooking mechanic that does not work with the major part of the game.
The main story missions rarely include opportunities to cook meals and even if you plan ahead and eat before starting the mission you can be sure that the first step of any mission is to stay somewhere over night thereby canceling to effect of meals.

The whole thing feels like a tech-demo with some half-assed gameplay put on top afterwards. I was promised a story full of intrigue, treachery and tragedy. I must have gotten a faulty disc because none of that happened during my play through.

One time, a boss was stuck at 1HP and wouldn't trigger the next QTE. I had to re-watch 20 minutes of unskippable cut scenes and repeat 20 minutes of glitchy, un-losable fight (It is literally 'hold one button until the monster is dead' )

The story can hardly be called a story due to how badly put together it is. It's upsetting. Now, you may think that expectations made this game bad for me, well no. I didn't think it was going to be a masterpiece, but I also didn't think it was going to be this much of a let down. Let's talk about its gimmicks promoted as features now.

    The Open World:
Given how big the entirety of the map is, you'd think that there would be dungeons and cities at every corner, wrong. There are around a dozen or so dungeons and, get this, two whole cities. It's pathetic. There is so much empty space. There are certain points, campsites, called havens and using these is redundant given there's practically always a rest point much more convenient in a little town or at a gas station. There's really no exploration to this game as walking on foot looking for dungeons would be a royal pain in the ass and using a chocobo to find dungeons would be slightly less aggravating, but you'd still end up finding practically nothing in all the empty space which is sprinkled with rather useless items here and there.

    Combat:
It's tasteless, repetitive and rather devoid of need of any sort of skill. The attack patterns of the monsters are inclined to aim for you even if you're far from them and trying to "hide" to regain health and mana, but they'll still find you and try to attack you. The whole "hiding/crouching" gimmick is practically non-existent throughout the game, so why even implement it? There are no combos, really, and just consists of spamming one button the majority of the time. Trying to be skillful will be rewarded with inescapable incoming damage. Maddening.

    Equipment and items:
Awful. There are only a handful of weapons in the game and an even much smaller amount of armors/outfits.
The system for armors and equipment is very lackluster and, get this, each outfit counts as two, one with a jacket and one without. How lazy. Customization is nonexistent and could have added a nice touch to the game. There are accessories, but these don't even appear on your person or your teammates. It's a shame, as customization could have been a nice and easy touch.

    Story:
    Messy, forgettable, poorly brought about.

    Music:
    Forgettable.

    Movement:
Just including this because it irked me, how the main character has to wipe his hands after every mob not permitting you to run. You can't grab on to any sort of ledge to boost yourself up on a rock for a better vantage point or anything of the sort. Your teammates will get in your way a lot of the time while anywhere. Accidentally running into a wall or object will cause you to bounce back off it. Lengthily. It's a nuisance.

    Driving:
You aren't really even driving. Why even have a car?

    Characters:
They're okay, and I use that in the loosest sense. The idea of what little this game is, is countered by the constant pushing of dialogue of how great and long an adventure this was, by the main characters. Which I easily see it could have been had things been executed more properly.

All in all, this game was disappointing and I wouldn't recommend it.

Me esperaba mas de este juego pero no vale tanto la pena.

Initially I felt the new combat system was pretty interesting, however it was apparent after awhile that it simply doesn't take any skill, however it is still satisfying when you get in a good rhythm. You don't need to think very much. I think that's what bothers me about this game - it takes out the thinking aspect. The car driving, the meal preparing and the photography really just turned me off of this game. The game is gorgeous, which is awesome. However it's like they created the entire game around you looking at things. Driving the car is pointless and annoying. Taking pictures of random things is cheesy and serves no purpose. Long drawn-out scenes of making food is just laughable. I really don't want to spend a quarter of my game play looking at different dishes of food. I love being able to build out my characters and that aspect is also gutted. Even the magic system and summoning is gutted. I can see how this might appeal to a wider general audience, however the lack of depth just left me feeling empty and is making it feel harder to come back to. Expand

Amongst the FF series game, I love FF type-0 the most as it has excellent story, free style combat system, including 14 playable characters with different weapons, tons of magic can be used, summons that can be controlled in battle, chocobo and flying ship available to be used to explore the open world, same level sadness of ending compared to FFXV. So tell me with a better console, why FFXV can't has the same (or better) contains?

It was so incredibly horrible that the developers gave a free year of game play and focused on recasting FFXIV Realm Reborn. I put Final Fantasy XV right on pace. The Developers created a story with such lack luster that they should be ashamed to call this title Final Fantasy. When I think Final Fantasy I think of a story so compelling it draws you in and its almost like watching a movie. It was apparent within the first 15 minutes of Final Fantasy XV that this was not going to be the case. At the beginning my father says to take care as I am the heir and the last son of the royal family. I knew immediately that something tragic was about to unfold. About 40 minutes later in the game it happened my father the king died in a less than epic fashion. There was absolutely zero character development or emotion for the passing of my father. In some strange way I was more relieved that my companions sister lived and was less concerned with the death of my own father the king to the empire. I never really fell into the story of how now I am the king as the passing of my father happened. I never felt the drama of my future queen and her departing. In fact it was so clunky I had a hard time following the story. I agree that the open world, side quests and dungeons are great but with the ultimate sacrifice of a compelling story that drives me. I never felt connected to the story in a way that felt epic or made my heart skip a beat. I am trying to not give too many spoilers but if your considering purchasing a final fantasy go buy the hd remake of final fantasy 10 as it is 100% better than this garbage. Please save your $60 and don't support the developer and bad games as this only encourages them to produce more bad games. As gamers we deserve more especially from a franchise name such as final fantasy. Don't get caught up in the nostalgia of final fantasy thinking OMG another Final Fantasy this has to be good because if it were any other game it wouldn't score over a 5 star review by any site. You have been warned don't purchase unless you are willing to accept a disappointment to the franchise yet again. Good Job Square Enix you matched Final Fantasy XIV the original yet again what a shame. Expand

ffxv does not reach in any way the previous saga exalted, resulting in an empty product, incomplete and botched badly. each component of the game is not worthy of a AAA title: a poorly defined graphics, with frequent dips in frame and a hateful camera; a shallow gameplay and mechanical very slow designed to extend the life and unnerve; a meaningless plot, with characters (presented in all these years of trailer) reduced to miserable appearances (lol); longevity of the main quest of 15h, with fetch quests all the same to all, and the only good of the game is successful about the soundtrack (I guess you could say made by third parties), wasted on this failure. ffxv first not to be a ff is not even a video game because it is incomplete, poor in every component and by far the worst chapter in this saga almost waned. goodbye final fantasy

Now don't get me wrong, I bought this game with much excitement and anticipation. I didn't expect this game to be the best game I have ever played, I didn't really have any major expectations. I didn't play any of the tech demos and stayed away from previews etc. In fact, I knew very little about the game prior to playing the full release version.

I'm not going to bother going into the pros and cons of the game, but let me just say that I gave this game a good 15 hours or so playtime before I could admit to myself that the game was bad. I really wanted to love and enjoy this game, and tried so hard to get into it. But unfortunately I couldn't and each time I played it seemed more like a chore than anything else.

I feel as though any fan of FInal Fantasy will be going through the 5 stages of grief after playing XV. The first stage being denial, which is likely to account for most positive reviews that weren't paid for by SE.

If you have yet to play FFXV, save your money and wait for a price drop. If you want to play a fantastic open world RPG then play Witcher 3.

I'm going to review this as both a standalone title, comparing it to other RPGs, and as a Final Fantasy title. I've played every mainline FF title except for I and XI, but recognize some titles may have been better received if they were not under the Final Fantasy title.

Regardless of how you look at XV, this game is a mess.

There are parts that work. The dungeons are fun to explore, the music is better than average, the banter livened up some areas, and there are short sections of the game plot which are a nice touch. It provided an amazing amount of laughter at times, but that was not intentional on behalf of the game. The trees and rocks were impressive.

Sadly, even the positives have negatives attached. Most of the dungeons have no lore or reason for existing, the vast majority of the music is simplistic and wasn't made to fit specific circumstances (i.e. you'll have no You're Not Alone, The Truth Revealed, or Fallen Angel), the banter is largely not related to the plot and offers no insight beyond "bugs are icky" or "Cindy needs to take out a restraining order towards Prompto," and the sections which don't work outnumber those that do. The trees and rocks WERE impressive though.

There are some aspects which were okay, but too botched to be good. I would say this would be a good first step for an open world FF game, but even Lightning Returns had a more memorable, albeit smaller, open world. This whole world is massive, which I'm sure took some amazing graphic work, but it's so empty in that most of it is just scenery you're meant to drive by and there's not much to discover other than random items in the field. On top of it, the areas aren't built up to have different cultures or heart. To compare it beyond FF, it fares even worse in comparison to anything open world Bethesda makes, and even the world of Dragon Age Inquisition - which filled its world with many fetch quests - since that open world understood the importance of lore and allowing player to discover things when exploring.

Speaking of boring fetch quests, that's exactly the method this game takes up for its sidequests. There are a couple I'd willingly do that were a bit different, but they by and large just felt pointless. This lack of purpose made even worse by how the open world is abandoned in the second half of the game, as it pulls a reverse FFXIII and becomes linear.

The worst part of the game happens during this linear part. There's a city that we hear of repeatedly, but when we arrive, we're limited to a small patch of grass. To top it off, I've rarely been as miserable playing a game as I was when I was playing Chapter 13, which dragged on, didn't have the right game mechanics to pull off, and offered nothing rewarding.

Most of the characters get no development or background, a lot of vital plot points happen off screen, and the plot itself pulls off something I would have thought impossible: Being very simple while also being as disjointed as possible. The plot is told in chunks, flashbacks, or in extra material the game assumes you've seen. I had watched the anime, movie, and played the platinum demo, and even then the latter half of the game had few answers. To avoid going into later spoilers, even the first quest you get opens up a ton of questions: Why would a prince leave without money to the point he has to slay monsters to pay his car bill? If he doesn't have the currency of that area, why didn't the more cautious Ignis think to convert it beforehand? Why does an area still in their Kingdom even use different currency? And that is nothing in comparison to the lack of logic later.

Even the central theme of friendship is something that doesn't make sense beyond their movements in battle. Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus have no relationship to each other and are only there because of Noctis. One of them ends up yelling at Noctis more than acting anything like a friend, another comes across as more of a highly paid servant, and the final member can act like a friend, but then Noctis can be horrible to him in return, completely destroying any sense of that "brotherhood." It does not help that we don't even know much about even their motivations for being there, particularly Gladiolus and Ignis. There were characters in FFII that I knew more about in terms of motives and background.

I'm fine with trying new things, but it has to be engaging. Most of the battle system was pressing O and occasionally warping while the camera focuses on the wrong place. I would've preferred something more similar to the tactics screen + pause and switch between party members method of Dragon Age games to add a more tactical edge to it.

Yes, there are sections which work and it might be an "okay" action game by a company without deep pockets, but given how RPGs rely more on story, there's no way this can get a high score when the writing is such a mess and the last half of the game feels unfinished.

combat is actually bad. FF15's "open world" is to open worlds what FF13 was to linear games. Systems and menu usage are clunky af. I timed a fast travel loading screen at 1:33, brutal. Im having a really hard time finding anything redeemable about this game. honestly just go play witcher 3 its the game SE was trying to duplicate here.

After so many years of development, Final Fantasy XV is not what I expected it to be. The universe is immense and beautiful and the characters are just fine. But the story is short and disappointing and the gameplay suffers from lack of depth. FFXV is a good game, but it can never bring the former glories back to the series.

Even as you reflect on the rarity of a blockbuster that's willing to take real risks, you'll be left with the uncomfortable realisation that ten years wasn't quite long enough, after all. Those jagged edges are, in the end, just a little too sharp. [Feb 2017, p.110]

Despite a divided feel, torn between what it was and what it plans to be, Final Fantasy XV has a lot to offer. If you're a diehard JRPG fan, then it's a positive sign that the series can cross over to a new format. And if you're just looking for an open world adventure, Final Fantasy XV certainly has that in spades, while doing just enough things differently to separate it from the likes of Dragon Age and Elder Scrolls.
