At least in the time that I’ve spent with it, I’ve not noticed any significant issues with sound, graphics and so on. It plays, looks, and sounds just like a remember it, with a new coat of paint tossed on top to make the overall look a little more appealing. There’s not a lot else to say about Final Fantasy VIII Remastered, other than you should absolutely pick this up when you have a chance, it’s easily the best version of the game available.

Final Fantasy spent a decade constructing idols and Final Fantasy VIII demolished every one of them. Its elaborate, extravagant, and chaotic parade of ideas marched toward an evolutionary dead end and ensured there would never be another game like Final Fantasy VIII. Even by Remastered’s distressing modernization, Final Fantasy VIII’s paradigm shifting idiosyncrasies still showcase one of the most fearless and contemplative models of its medium. Final Fantasy VIII is a classic for people immune to the charms of classics.

A wonderful story that is now supported by great looking characters and backgrounds, Final Fantasy VIII is worth the pickup twenty years after it's initial launch.

The original FF VIII was a masterpiece full of imperfections, and so is this remaster. There are some “quality of life” additions and minor visual enhancements, but its magic still remains.

It's easy to see why Final Fantasy VIII is considered one of the series' most divisive entries, but its story and gameplay systems remain unique 20 years after its original release. Final Fantasy VIII Remastered has its flaws -- the draw system is still a total pain in the arse -- but there's a magic and atmosphere to Squall's often mental adventure that's incredibly endearing. This is a PlayStation classic given a new lease of life, and it's still way more interesting than the majority of Japanese RPGs hitting our consoles today.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered reintroduces this iconic RPG from the 90's to the present, accompanied by beautiful graphics that will stand the test of time. However, the original problems with the gameplay continued in this version.

Final Fantasy VIII Remastered is a prime example of how to do a remaster well. Improved graphics modernize the experience, and modifiers help alleviate the grind issues. That said, I’ve always felt FFVIII needed real gameplay changes. It won’t get that in a remaster, and as such, those who didn’t like the game before won’t like it now. If what you disliked in the original was the grind, put your eyes on this remaster. And if you loved FFVIII in the past or are a curious newcomer, this is the best version of the game by far.

A fantastic JRPG from the golden era :). FF7, 8 and 9 blew me away as a child. I couldn't recommend it enough :).

Some weird creepy people are downvoting it due to censorship. A summon has slightly more clothing around her waist now and one character has less cleavage on show... I don't understand people sometimes... why they would downvote such a great game for such a remarkably dumb reason is beyond me.
Hopefully it appeals to both new and old fans. Personally I was really impressed with the new character models. Cleaning up the backgrounds could have been nice too but they have some nostalgic value to me in their original form anyways :).

As this is a remaster, there are a couple of noticeable differences as the characters and GF's are much sharper and have been completely redone. There is a x3 speed function which is useful for long battles when trying to draw magic and a boost function which restores all HP, and enables consistent limit breaks.

There is an option for no encounters as well. This is probably a good thing as there seem to be more random encounters (but that could just be me)..

However there are some features which has split opinion on the quality of this remaster. Namely the pre rendered backgrounds which are exactly the same, but they are now much more pixelated & blurry and in their original format. (no widescreen option) As a result there are instances where your new sharp looking characters are standing next to blurred and out of focus ones which are part of the original background.

There is some unnecessary censorship happening- not that I have a big issue with it, but the freedom of imagination for character designs is dying a slow 'death by 1000 paper cuts'.

The audio sometimes changes from the original to a more basic version at times (Dollet mission)

The controller vibration is no longer an option. Playing the original, I became pretty good at Squalls limit break by feeling the rumble of the controller. Can't do that anymore.

The characters only run- they don't walk anymore.

Being able to play FFVIII again is fantastic, and if you enjoyed the game all those years ago, then you will look past the glaring omissions and inconsistencies and enjoy the game for what it is.
If you're looking to play a Final Fantasy game for the first time- then wait for the FFVII remake next year.

The character graphics look good, but then the background looks all blurry. It really doesn't match at all.

This game honestly isn't my favorite Final Fantasy. It's lumped in with FF13, X-2 and all those other ones. I didn't like 8 back in 1999 and I don't like it even now. The speed up makes the stupid gameplay mechanics A LOT more tolerable though. Hate that they took out the rumble feature when using Squall's gunblade. I never realized how easy that made it.

Hate the junction system and how the game randomly unjunctions your entire party at times. So if you're not paying attention, you might go into a boss battle with no one junctioned to a GF or magic. I think I had this problem on the PS1 version as well.

The character and plot read like a cringy 90s teen anime. None of the characters are all that likable except Laguna and his bros.

The only real good thing is the music, but I'd say this is one of Nobuo Uematsu's weaker soundtracks.

All and all I wouldn't buy it if you've already played it. I bought it mostly because I want to support more of these kinds of remasters and it has a very easy platinum. Otherwise just play the original version. But then you don't have the speed up and have to sit through the countless drawing of magic from enemies. That's a tough decision.
