FIFA 18 has improved marginally in areas where you'd expect it to, but in my opinion, regressed in other areas through EA's decision to put in a half-assed effort at making the game seem more true to life, while at the same time go out of their way to favor attack over defence and making other changes that does the game no favors in making it seem like the real thing. I've noticed that some people genuinely love these changes, and that's fair enough, but I strongly disagree when people say that FIFA 18 has taken the franchise in a more realistic direction. It hasn't. If slowing everything down is all it takes to make a game seem more realistic, then EA have an easy job ahead of them.

Unfortunately, I don't think we're anywhere close to getting a convincingly realistic FIFA game. Do people really want that, though? PES has been a substantially more realistic football simulator for some time now, bar their lack of licenses for player names and whatnot. Yet, the majority of people still seem to prefer the gameplay-wise more arcadey, FIFA franchise.

As much as I like football, I don't really think that the same thing we get over and over with just a different name is a good way to spend your money. Although, as every other Fifa game, it's pretty fun.

Even though the gameplay at launch was really good, EA managed to mess everything up with the latest patches. Gameplay now is stale and boring, a clear iteration (and quite worse) of FIFA 17. By far the worst FIFA of the last few years.

    The game is s**t.
    Needs a good patch asap.
There are too many scripted scenes, where you have barely no chance to get the ball or to avoid goals while playing against the CPU. Sometimes the script makes your goalkeeper and the defence line ridiculously weak only to change the result of the game.

And one other thing Ultimate Team is a slot machine aimed at minors and as we speak in certain nations is the topic of debate as of the legality of the gambling aspect of the game.

I have played Fifa since 2007 and I enjoyed them with the goods and the bads, but I must honestly say that this year it is the worst of them. The goalkeepers are a complete joke , and the defending a complete mess( actually there is no defense). The player faces during cutscenes looks like plastic puppets( they are too shinny) and another horrible thing are the the nets. Whenever you score a goal you have the feeling that you put the ball into a tin.( for singleplayer you can change the setting to make it better). Overall the game do not deserve more than 4, and for the first time I sold my game the second day I bought it and I got Pes 2018 wich this year is stunning from all points of view except licenses ( can be sorted in 5 min with that download file).
My final advice is to all of you: do not buy Fifa this year as you will regret it , and give Pes a chance even if you are a Fifa fanboy.
PS: I am neither a Fifa or Pes fanboy. I just want a decent Football game!
Update on my review after all the patches and over 200 games in FUT. After first few days i sold my game as i stated above but i decided to give it a try again after it have been patched. The game is an absolute mess. Scripting is everywere, mostly in FUT ( It is less visible in seasons though). It is no point playing FUT anymore. it doesent matter if you have good or bad players as scripting decides who wins the game. I can see the outcome of the match after the first 10 min of the game.( same scenario all the time). Scripting is there especially whenever you need desperatly 1 or 3 points to promote or relegate, but not only. I must admit that even all my wins are because of scripting( i cand see the opposing player struggeling to play) same as i do when it happens to me. The most frequent scenario is when a very weak opponent scores a goal in the first 10 min of the game, then until the 80 min you high pressure him , have taken over 20 shoots on goal and his goalie it is like superman or you hit the cross bar 3 or 4 times, and at the 80th min of the game he scores a scripted second goal.
in conclusion FUT it is a complete mess and a disgrace and not fun at all. The only way that Fifa can be played decently, after it has been patched, it is multiplayer at the same console or at online season.

Fifa 14 was the first of its series I've been playing up until Fifa 18 recently. Over 4 years of offline game plays (2 games a day on average) with simple matches and league matches (BVB to win bundesliga), I can only see EA's mess in fundamental gameplay to get worse. I'm fully aware that it's a simulation of football experience after all, so it can never be perfect. It's easy to get a sense of AI playing against you, but FIFA 17 and 18 had been very different. I appreciate the fact that EA have introduced new things into the game. But it seems to me they are currently very comfortable to put 90% of their effort to work on surfaces (like appearances of players) than on the fundamental experiences.

Before FIFA18, the game have been fluid, slick, challenging, and acceptably balanced (but still not good enough). I have been able to get past defenders if my player's position was right and the dribbling was good enough. I can make series of forward and backward passes (although annoying sometimes) to dominate the game and win. FIFA 16 was too flat and too easy to get goals (unrealistically). Besides statistics that disappeared, FIFA 17's opponent AI was too hard to get past and the way it wins the ball and defends are too hard for any football fans to understand. But at least FIFA 17's player's defenders AI are smart enough to defend against opponents. That means you can win the game (patiently) if you are tactically robust. So patience paid off at the last 3 - 4 minutes of the game, which partially ruined the "joy" I've always had with FIFA.

Now, FIFA 18 simply get rid of everything you know about gameplay. Passings are so slow that I nearly see the ball to stop by itself half way between players. When I made good tackles or interceptions, my player sometimes sprint on a threadmill and let opponent takes the ball. My players who are better positioned to win air balls loses everytime or simply being paralysed. Players like Aubameyang or Sterling or Kane can never dribble past defenders of opponent with 1.5 stars lower ratings. It still takes up to 3 actual seconds for my players to reuse the passed balls or to shoot. Some good (but not among the best) players like Dahoud can make 8 shots (all outside the box because there's no way to get inside) just to hit the woodwork 7 times IN A SINGLE GAME (yes, the players can be that accurate). FIFA 17's opponents who can outpace player's defenders so easily are nothing new in FIFA 18 (Yes, my Aubameyang was traced back by Mertesacker on through ball and tackled backwards so easily). It now empowers opponents by having them able to make clearance in a rush and ends up being a killer diagonal ball WHILE MY DEFENDERS ARE PARALYSED. And right at that moment, when I try to take control over defenders, I ended up controlling my CAM. Then now matter how I can keep calm in my box, nothing works. Containing or jockeys only slow them down just to make a good passing to its teammates and score. Trying to win the ball will risk (90% chance) conceding penalty. FIFA 18 no longer allows free kicks, corner kicks, and penalty kicks for players to score. By the moment the stadium announces additional time, my players can no longer make passes and they are up against the pace and flawless performance of REAL MADRID even if I'm playing against 1860 Munich (IN THE 90th MINUTE).

This is my worst football game I've ever played (including PES I've been playing for nearly a decade before switching to FIFA).

I don´t understand this EA, your Company has experience with football games from 1994 and your are not learning from your mistakes! Why? Every year the self problems! The default faces are ugly, because EA has switched to Frostbite Engine! The balance between defense and offense ist extreme advantage for the offense! Unrealistic gameplay is the result, that is spectacular for kids, but not for users they will have a real football game! Football is not alone offense EA!!! The offense is extreme overpowered! All second long shots goes into the goal, and fast players overrun all defense player! Players how Ronaldo, Bale and so on are total overpowered, that is extremely unreal! The goalkeeper is a fly catcher! FIFA is the same we the WWF, that is not a sports game, that is a show game, the winner is standing on before the referee the game open! What is your problem EA, do you can't this better or do you will not? Buy you PES, that is really a real football game, FIFA is dead!!!

The new features this year are quickly forgotten as you start to spend serious time playing this messy and bug filled game. Bugs that have existed since as far back as Fifa 15 & 16 are still present, apparently going unnoticed by the development team even though there are literally thousands of posts all over their own forums detailing these issues submitted by unhappy customers.
Why do we keep coming back for more? It’s really only a lack of any real quality competition from other developers in the football simulation arena and EA sports know that so they continue to produce a sub par game and we the hopeless dreamers continue to buy this mess each year in hopes that finally we will get the game we deserve for paying £50+ every year for as long as we can remember.

If you’re gonna buy this game, do so with very low expectations so you’re not disappointed. Other than that you could try PES but don’t be fooled by reviews, that game is a mess too.

There are so many bugs and flaws in this game that I actually dont know where to start.
I've read a lot of the reviews and one thing that is for certain is that all ratings above 5 are paid by ea. The game is not realistic at all, its not fun playing, the bugs are taking all the fun away from the game. The anger you get from losing matches/get scored on VS the "joy" of winning and scoring yourself is not comparable. Defending without AI would be much better, but EA failed to actually make it viable, this game is about who can score the most goals, and ofcourse pace.

I've created this account only to review Fifa 18, but as I am writing i realise more and more that EA doesnt give a **** about its customers at all. As a huge fifa "fanboy" I am just sad that EA could release this game. I'm gonna write a list with things that must be improved at some point, cause this isnt unbearable.

PingPong passes( not skillbased at all)

Horrible dribbling and ballcontrol(the times i do get past, is because of the defending in this game is a disaster)

Random goals (9/10 goals come from mistakes either by AI or player)

GKs extremely unbalanced (were **** before patch, have improved but are some times way to op, and sometimes way to sh*t)

    Shooting are totally random.

Set pieces are useless, shooting from freekicks wont get you any goals. gks are superop when it comes to saving freekicks.

Pay to win (you wont get **** in your packs, you get to few packs for the amount of cash you spend.)
    Laggy menus (just how?)

Players looked much better in fifa 17 and earlier fifa's than 18

And the defense is just f*cked up.

Its worth mentioning that I am usually a very good player, with dribling as my strongest feature. but this fifa, i cant stand. Everything is bull****, if someone scores one of those easy goals im quitting ASAP. Its not even worth trying when you actually have no control of the outcome of the match, even tho you are miles better.

I wouldnt recommend anyone to buy Fifa 18, hopefully Fifa 19 will be better.
This review wasnt as good as i was hoping it would be, because this game deserves a 100% honest review.

    - FUT is still very pay2win (lower squads suck) and you are often paired with players with huge lags - I have 1000 mb/sec sooo I do not think this would be my problem.

Fifa 18 is basically 17, but with some little changes made on the menus, a little tweak on the game play, some new features on carrer mode and a better FUT experience. Still falls to it's knees for its lack of sufficient content for players coming from the previous title.

In Career mode, if you switch off the first transfer window, which is the only way to ensure that you get accurate team rosters, the Bosman/free agency signing system breaks. So if you then sign a pre-contract with a player in the January Transfer window to join in the next Summer, the player doesn't join. This is just one such instance of a basic game breaking flaw that is impossible to have been missed in testing. If EA testers can miss this bug, then it is blatantly obvious that they don't even test their Career mode. Adding a stupid animated signing sequence, which gets old after the first 10 times you do it doesn't matter if the transfer system is itself broken.
Oh and if you add people to your transfer list, no one wants to sign them. No reviewer manages to catch these bugs, so it is obvious that the reviewers don't really play career mode. Unfortunately, EA just doesn't care for me as a customer and this product is just not for someone who like single player gaming.
Well people kept telling me i was too old for games, but now that publishers don't want to make games for me anymore, i might as well start saving money.

Just took a look at a review for FIFA 16 before I posted this and two years later the same problems persist and EA continue to take our money and sell us a broken game. The game plays like it was designed by somebody who has never watched a football match in their life.

There is no defending, literally it just doesnt happen, maybe at the start of the game you can put in some tackles but anytime after the 60th minute? Nope be prepared for the opposition to just walk through your defence while players jump out of the way when you press O. Players you dont control actually dont play football, just juts move around, they dont tackle, move into space or even hold a line and you will often have your R/LB just run behind your CB to keep the opposition forward onside.

Then the biggest fix of them all the fifa ultimate team, yet another farce. Offering these fake packs, while ill admit ive fallen for, ive added enough in to buy well over 150 pack (although this is including coins from games) and the best rated player i have got in one? 81 rated. It is nothing but a fix, from the people I know playing the only ones pulling decent players are those who are pumping money in year after year, its not the lotto system EA would have you believe but just a tab on how much money you put in from which they start to release slightly better players after you hit certain amounts of payments. Want to pull Ronaldo or Messi? Hell even want to pull a half decent player rated over 84 that might sell for some coins? Yeh thats only gonna happen after putting in about 500 pound over the last few years. Its an actual pyramid scheme, the people at the top are shown to get the best rewards to encourage those at the bottom to keep pumping money in to get to the top but the draw is fixed and you need to give EA more and more if you want to get anything half decent.

Your up against in this squad battle to which depsite being advertsied as you playing similar UT you just come up against teams with both Ronaldo, Messi and a host of others. Despite not having a team close to one team today I was pitted against Ronaldo, Messi, Henry, Ronaldinho, Neymar, Modric, Kroos, Umtitti and Varane (for reference the best player i have is rated 86).

This game is nothing more than frustrating, its not fun i dont get enjoyment and its often turned off after no more than one or two games.

Really dont bother wasting your money on this game, its broken, perhaps after a patch or two EA might get the finger out and fix it but I highly doubt these money grabbing a**holes will.

FIFA 18, was a little disappointing. If you own FIFA 17, I question the point and if you don't then I would consider it carefully. The controls are ok but not a patch on PES 2018 and it's slightly marred (like many EA games) with the constant packs and micro-transactions.

Let's start with The Journey, this was the biggest improvement for me, however could've been better. The story was average at best, everything was Adidas in the gear (similar to UFC 2 with Reebok) which wasn't the best move. The story just felt stale to me. It got tedious after an hours game time. Then this leads me to Career Mode. They brought up the new transfer negotiations and made it seem huge. As I originally predicted, this got tedious extremely quick. Besides that, it's the exact same as 17. No real improvements, especially considering the wishlist for that mode has always been in-depth, and some of the ideas people have are amazing.

Besides the negative, the play of the game is amazing. Defending got a lot better, players actually make runs, and overall the flow of the game feels extremely nice. I just with EA would focus on the offline modes as much as they focus on Ultimate Team.

The game has a lot of problems with it, for a game which holds all the licenses and all the strong playing cards in their hand they sure don't really make a serious effort do they?

Here is the list of wrong things in the game-
    - Same old commentary with all the same old rehashed comments from many years ago
    - Many leagues missing Chinese being the main concern for me
    - Half-assed attempt with some leagues such as Serie A which doesn't even have its proper name
    - Hardly any new stadiums added to the game that we would care about
    - Barely any new faces added into the game leagues like SPFL, Eredivisie, Brazilian league, French League, Serie A, Bundesliga, and La Liga completely ignored by EA
    - Relates to above, game only focuses on EPL
    - Career mode has been given minimal attention to improving it which is very sad
    - Lack of new modes
    - Continued support to FUT which proves EA only care about earning even more dirty money which they don't deserve
    - Microtransactions are still in the game
    - No mod support thus we are stuck with this terrible base game unless EA actually do something to improve it themselves
    - Terrible music playlist!!
    - Bugs which leave modes broken
    - Finally barely any new features to make this game worth £39.99-49.99

Just so I don't sound too negative the goods I think are -
+ Slightly improved graphics and lighting
+ Most players that have had new scans look good
+ Some of the minor changes to career mode are welcome, but still not enough
+ The game for me feels less B.S. with regards to the scripting
+ Gameplay flows well when it works

I think that is everything I could ever think of, I'm going to try my best to get a refund for this game I'd suggest if its possible for some of you to do the same you should.

I haven't encounrtered the ridiciulously high scoring matches that others have mentioned (I've played around 25-30 matches offline, 5 online) and the matches have always had realistic scorelines. This may be because I know how to defend, or I'm playing on a suitable difficulty for my ability.

So far I've been enjoying the Hunter Returns mode, it's a bit slow but it brings a fun dimension to the game and I really enjoyed the "control one player" mode in previous football games.

I wouldn't say this FIFA is flawless but having first played around 15 matches on the PES2018 demo I am definitely happy with my decision to buy FIFA this year.

In fifa 15 players like ronaldo and bale was very fast no one could contain them. It changed in 16 and 17 but the stupid developpers bring back this velocity in fast players again. and even an average player can take Real madrid and beat you easily.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Several new features were added this year. None were major, but were all slightly enjoyable anyway.
The Journey gets a new installment, which is good, besides the horrible stretches of gameplay where no cutscenes occur and the mode feels like a grind similair to the Player Career Mode. The plot is fairly enjoyable and raises a smile sometimes. Career mode recieves a very small re-do. Managers now discuss transfers in small cutscenes, the CPU can be a little too demanding at times though and that's when frustration hits. You can now view your squad in a slightly more comprehendable menu. Besides that, Career Mode has remainded the same.
Ultimate Team is still the disgusting, sickening money machine it always was. Grinding for the best players like Ronaldo without spending any money is impossible, it takes months. Real cash needs to be spent to get the best. There is no other point to this mode. It's a mobile game within a Console game. The online features are what you expect from EA. Clunky servers and lag make the modes unplayable for some, including myself. The modes themselves are okay, best of which is Virtual Clubs (In My Opinon). Sadly, Creation Centre is still not back. It was definetly a fan favourite and added alot to my gameplay expierience. There is a few new licenses including Iceland, Saudi Arabia, Sparta Praga and a few more. The gamplay features such as new dribbling and crossing are actually really enjoyable and a big boost from FIFA 17. Dribbling with a good dribbler is enjoyable and crossing has more curve and tends to find a player more often than not. The Crowds are fine and new celebrations add a small bit of authenticity. Set Pieces remained the same. Quick subs is a new feature where you can make well... Quick Subs. Very sadly though, defending is incredibly hard and depends more on luck than skill. Goalkeepers are a joke. So to sum this review up, it's not that bad.
Both games are only OK but I'll stick with FIFA for now.

Passing and shooting feels ‘floaty’ and slow. don’t get the sensation of drilling a cross over or putting together quick crisp passes. Shots also feel disconnected. Playing offline it feels sluggish/ laggy. The number of times I kicked the ball out because of lag was ridiculous. Players don’t close down/ aren't tight to the opposition, 8/10 of conservative tackles I made resulted in a foul. It seems this year all they want you to do is run into players. Which is tough when no player is near the opposition. Yet the computer is up your a$$ the whole time (playing on professional level). Keepers are awful. The opening intro game I won 7-6. Says it all. I read reviews saying they’ve made it more 'Hollywood'. Focusing on attack. Nearly everything you hit goes in, players can’t tackle and keepers might as well not be there. Plus.. it’s slow.. so slow. I have the game settings maxed for speed.. it’s still super slow. I love on Pro Evolution 2017 the the fast breaks, pinging the ball about the pitch, drilling low hard crosses in for the strikers to arrive late and poke home. FIFA18 lacks all feeling. When I unlocked the trophy for scoring from a drilled cross i didn't even realise it was a drilled cross it was so slow and 'floaty'. Without a doubt the worst FIFA in a decade. I'll be opening my wallet again far too soon to purchase Pro Evolution 2018. Expand

    DEFENCE
Okay, so first off, yes the defending in Fifa 18 is broken I can only assume it will be balanced at some point. In a way, you could say defending is more realistic I.E. you can no longer just sprint headlong at Messi and get get ball back %90 of the time. you know have to play defense patiently with good positioning BUT!! it then becomes just a matter of time before one of you A.I. just falls asleep, leaving someone wide open in the box. This year offensive players just react so much more sharply to 50/50 balls (a complete reversal from last year) so even when you make a perfectly timed tackle, a lot of the time the attacker will just run onto the ball whilst the defender is still recovering from tackling.
At least the A.I. miss some shots this year or else every game would end 15 - 10.

    OVERALL 2/10

    OFFENCE
REJOICE, for it is better than last year! Shooting is the same, well basically the same but you can score from outside the box much more often and I no long feel like %99 of my shots get blocked by a defending players ridiculous reaction speed. The angles on through balls are glorious this year, truly life like (life-like?). Great passers still make obscenely poor passes WAYYYY too often but hey, something improved in Fifa!
    Overall 7/10

    OFFICIATING

Well let see... I played for 8 hours today and have had a total of 3... yes 3 free-kicks in 15ish matches.
and I just rage quit because I got a straight red for a basic mistimed slide tackle so it's crap.

    OVERALL 1/10

    SET-PIECES

They are totally and utterly useless.

    OVERALL 0/10

    PRESENTATION

    Outstanding as always.

    10/10

anyway I could go on about how tedious transfers are now and how little is added in terms of announcing but no one is reading this anyway

So far so good, hopefully its stays that way, unlike last year. Passing feels a lot more precise than, through balls and over the top through balls can be said the same for. Defending takes a bit to get used to, but apart from that, the game feels good so far. Early days though.

Out of the box the game is very arcade (too fast, goalkeepers allow weird goals, too easy to score from a distance, to easy to pass the ball), you need to modify the sliders and settings and you can make it slower and more realistic. I am wondering if many reviewers even tried to do that.

I tried PES 2018 (demo and full game) before buying FIFA 18, and in my opinion FIFA is a much better game including the gameplay (again, with proper settings/sliders).

Once you find the best settings to make the GK better and more realistic, slow down the game and passing, (both for you and the AI) the gameplay is very satisfying.

Graphics and presentation are very good, commentaries could be improved.

There is a good variety of teams to play with, however national teams such as Croatia, Japan, Korea, Iran, Bosnia, Ukraine, Nigeria, and Costa Rica should all be in the game, even as generic it would be better than nothing. We could use a few more clubs (two major Brazilian clubs are missing due to licensing, and a few clubs playing European cups are also missing).

An edit/import teams mode would be a nice addition. FIFA had the creation center and I don't understand what they got rid of it.

We definitely could also use more stadiums, EA lost the FC Barcelona's Camp Nou last year, this year tno more Dortmund's impressive stadium. That's quite annoying. Adding an MLS stadium (LA Galaxy) shouldn't be a priority over Napoli's stadium, or Feyenoord, Galatasaray, Maracana, Lyon, Benfica, Celtic and many others.

Game modes didn't change much from last year which is probably not a bad thing, the journey is back so if you enjoyed it in FIFA 17 that's good news for you. I mostly play offline and manager/career mode so I won't review modes such as Ultimate Team.
The career mode (as a manager) is good but needs new features other than cut scenes, and to fix some things EA got wrong for years. There are for example too many big transfers made by the computer, players attributes start decreasing way too soon (sometimes before they hit 30 years old!).

I understand how someone can dislike FIFA 18 just like I gave an honest chance to PES 2018 and didn't enjoy it at all, but the fact you struggle to defend and you don't change the settings and sliders to try different things doesn't deserve a ZERO.
EA Sports game are mostly arcade, many kids who play sports games now only care about ultimate team, speed, scoring a ton of goals, winning games online...that's okay different generation, things change...Fortunately you can make it what you like (more of a simulation) and have a lot of fun.

I am not a "fanboy", I earn my money and I think twice before I put so much money in a video game. While this game could be much better and I regret EA doesn't seem to care about certain things, overall it's a very good football/soccer game, whether you want to play it arcade, simulation, online, or offline.

    Positives+
+Controls are more responsive and fluid than in previous games.
+More licenses making the presentation even better.
+Improved physics (IMO the ball in FIFA 17 bounced around way too much, it's like they were kicking around a beach ball).
+Career mode sees some much needed improvements.
    +Graphics look great as always.
+Cristiano Ronaldo's run and movements are spot on (even though you can really only notice it with him and nobody else.
+The game feels much more random and less is determined by scripted animations that take too long to complete and ultimately detract from the gameplay (if you've played PES then you know what I'm talking about and it's about time FIFA pulled this off.

    Negatives-
-Gameplay is improved, but it's not even close to PES 2018.
-Goalkeepers are the worst I've seen in FIFA ever. They regularly miss saves they should make and other times they just won't even be close to the ball. This needs to be fixed in a patch.
-The transfer negotiation cut scenes in career mode are a nice addition, but they get old really fast and you just end up skipping them after a few times of watching them.
-Huge emphasis on attacking. Combined with terrible goal keepers, games are very high scoring this year. One my games against Real Madrid ended Chelsea 7-2 Real Madrid (career mode pre season tournament). It detracts from the immersion when game after game ends 5-1 7-2 5-3 etc.

I still give the game an 8 because it is better than FIFA 17 and is still fun to play despite all the negatives. I will say with honesty that PES is the better game. If you can get both, then get both, if you're only getting one, then go with PES, download the option files and you're good.

Defending is basically a spectating period of the game because if you do anything else than use your teammate to pressure you will run past him a meter or two to the side. If you try a quick turn (for example fake shot or pass) when attack make sure no one is close because the player needs at least 2 seconds before he starts to move again. Shooting and goalkeeping is ridiculous, get within 30m and fire a shoot and a rock would be better in goal. Even the tiniest players has huge physical advantage compare to the strongest when tackling to win the ball. Obstruction is a absolute joke, can even described how bad it is.

EA says every year they improved FIFA, but only visual and how "real" the game is. The game is beautiful, no discussion there. To be fair, the game is a decent game compare to reality. But reality as a game sucks. I doubt any of the developers have played football in their life as so much unnatural things happens (such as obstructing the player 40m from the ball and nothing happens).

TL-DR; Defending is garbage because you have to be at master level to do anything yourself. Attacking is also garbage goalkeepers are useless and walcott easily tackles Ibrahimovic so that he falls. Obstruction isnt a word in EA vocabulary.

Solemnly based this on FUT. If you want to play online, then this definitely isnt the game for you.

But this is the first Fifa I'm buying in over a decade because it's made enough improvements, especially on the controls & physics, to the point where all the other stuff like presentation, licenses, modes & graphics actually put it over for me.

PES devs deserve the praise & cash after all these years (though they also deserve better than Konami as their boss...) but I find it pretty amazing that this is the year so many are finally flocking to it, after literally Decades of arguing with FIFA stans that EA's game was trash & that PES was where it's at. I'll admit even now, PES' classic feel on the controls cannot be beat.... But a football/soccer simulation that does not make. The truth is that PES has no midfield game. Matches are generally just 90 mins of counter attacks, through lobs to the wing, a flurry of shots, and repeat until the whistle blows. Any good PES player will churn out 25 shots per 10 minute game like clockwork and the only way to stop it isn't with actual defense on the field, but by memorizing defensive settings combos in the gameplan menu which apply the same to pretty much every team regardless of personnel & essentially functions as a game within a game. PES is fine, but PES is PES... It's got it's own rules & internal logic and if you abide by them, you'll have fun because it feels nice to play. But again, that doesn't make it a football/soccer simulation.

I'm seeing a lot of people complain about FIFA's pace, but it is much more like the real thing. You actually have to think about how you're going to move the ball up the field & make the most of your possessions. There is actual incentive to pass Backwards sometimes, like in real life, to reset play... Try that in PES in a competitive game, I dare you (you'll have it snatched from behind by the opposing striker and give up a goal). There are different ways to approach offense unlike in PES where every good player sets the same 3 FWD formation regardless of the personnel because they know the game is so heavily offensive that playing any other way is pointless. In FIFA you can actually play team defense based on field positioning instead of feeling like you're skating on ice with no choice but to try to steal the ball 1 on 1, at which point it's off to the races again. If all this makes FIFA "too slow" for people then I really have to question those people's understanding of the sport.

None of this would mean as much to me if the game didn't feel right on the controls, which is exactly why I've stuck it out with PES & dealt with all the BS (like bad servers & lack of licenses, uploading kits & stadiums & all that) for all these years. There is no doubt that the physics & feel have finally improved to the point where it's a no brainer for me. And while the controls may not be as loose & Mario-like as PES, it's certainly better than any FIFA in a long time, especially last year's where it felt like all the players were puppets connected by string. This time passing & dribbling do feel nice and individual players off the ball actually move around in a more realistic way, unlike any other Fifa or PES I've seen, which seemed robotic when you look at them from a distance. If you don't believe me check out the demo & play it for yourself.

I have yet to get into all the different modes but from what I've seen from FUT it is nice and let me tell you the licenses, presentation & feeling of real life connectedness with sport globally do not hurt, especially after all these years of PES. If I come across any tragic gamebreaking circumstances I will come back and change this review, but until then I'm leaving a 10 because all these 0's, 1's & 2's are a joke and need some balancing out. My only real concern at this point is that I haven't exactly found the right difficulty setting, though I've settled on Pro for now (1 higher than the default Semi-Pro) and it generally feels right.

Fifa 18 feels excactly like the earlier versions of the game. I personally feel that they try way too hard to make it "feel" professional to the it takes all your freedom away. If the game feel like you do something that is't what they want they slow you down. Long passes and and heading duels you loose all control and have to look at your game wait it out for you. They make all the changes with the story mode to make an excuse to make new games but a decent to good story with repetitive gameplay isn't fun. FUT is also a majority of the game. Same game as last years. When will people realise they're getting shafted by paying a lot of money for the same game year after year! Can't wait for sociable soccer early next year!

Save yourselves the trouble and get PES 2018 if your looking for a proper on pitch experience. If you get all butt hurt about Man Red and Yorkshire Blues then suit yourself and by this heap of crap from EA.

Fifa 2018 looks great on the outside, has licenses, nice menu's and all that stuff its a flashy looking game, but falls flat on the pitch where it matters most. By the way I am

By the way I am only loyal to the best footballing experience available, I thought Fifa 09-12 were excellent games but lets be honest they have been rubbish ever since 2012 edition.

    Avoid this one...again

EA sports you're like an ex girlfriend. I only remember the good times, but once we're back together all the bad memories come back. Every time I hope you've changed, yet now I realise it's not you, but me. I need to move on and let go, you will never be what I look for in a video game...

By rebuilding the animation system the developers managed to significantly improve footballers’ responsiveness, which results in more fluent gameplay and lets you perform tighter maneuvers. That makes attacking a real joy, but in my opinion turned defense into frustrating chore that requires too much precision. [12/2017, p.42]

No huge changes have been made on the pitch, but thanks to improvements to The Journey and Ultimate Team, this is the most comprehensive and beautiful game of football on PS4. [December 2017, p.84]

If you're looking for a football simulation then grab a copy of PES 2018. If you want a dramatic series of events with every match you play then get FIFA 18. [Issue#194, p.75]
