The Gameplay is great, The characters are great. The ONLY reason I didn't give it a 10 was because of that wonky area is town where you slow down tremendously. I don't know what that is, but it's horrible.

Lost some details that made Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas outstanding games, but makes up for it with new concepts in the franchise.

The only reason this game isn't considered **** is due to alot of ignorant gamers only having played Fallout 4 and not any other games.

It's a mediocre AAA game at best, probably why so many ignorant gamers enjoy it, because they've never explored anything else.

As a fallout game this just totally fails, don't buy it, and if you like the Fallout Franchise you shouldn't support this game at all

Lets start with the good things. I like the main story and characters. The twist are good and the involved characters are memorable. With Nick, Piper, Deacon, John Hancock and Kellgog we got great backstories. I can relate to these characters and feel compassion for them. This is for me a sign for good character creation. Also the factions and their leaders are magnificent. While I don't like some aspects I can at least see where they come from (except maybe one I wont spoil). Again you must chose a fraction at a late point in the game like in New Vegas. The sidequests are also a strength with the Silver Shroud quest-line as my favorite while many others that are also remarkable like Nicks Detective cases, The secret of the Cabot house and Last voyage of the USS Constitution as close second. Some go hand in hand with the dark humor of the Fallout series. There is one dialog where a still working security robot wants you to identify yourself. You can respond with insults to a humorous result. I am in the minority here but I like the crafting, construction elements and settlements. The controls work well or lets say as in all new Fallout games. I am really satisfied with the game. Now to the parts I dislike. The bugs are (slightly) more numerous than in Fallout 3 and New Vegas. The new level up system is a hit and miss. While I like that I can potentially learn everything part of the fun in previous games was to create your own build and style. Some fan favorite abilities got removed. I hate that Preston always have uninteresting random quests. I would have liked the character but each time I get near him I have to save a settler from stupidity. I defended all settlements in a way that nothing should harm them and they have enough of everything there but they always find a way to get captured or lost. The power armor is now useless for me. There is no tread serious enough for me to waste fusion cores. Overall this is a bit different but a true Fallout game or experience. I enjoyed it and will give 8/10. Fallout New Vegas in the ultimate / game of the year edition is still better. Expand

Fallout 4, lets just say that it is a perfect post-war survival game, because that's what it is. The graphics, the style, the game-play. It's not just that, but the wide variety of mods on PS4 too, it just make the game customized to your liking, making it more and more enjoyable.

I believe that the story is a bit better than new vagas however so I'll give it that.
I love that the shooting isn't entirely tart and that they really built the game around the idea of: "lets not make skyrim with guns again" I think that nailing down the shooting and mechanics before the rpg and story helps the game a ton. The settlement mechanics allow you to modify and kit out yourself from basically anywhere in the wasteland.
I believe that the game was unfairly reviewed in 2019 due to review bombing because of 76 this game is great and I hope to the godly Garvey that a mainline single-player fallout comes out in the next five years after the Elder Scrolls 6.

I really enjoyed building the settlements, the only thing I wish was it had bigger areas to build. After building a large town, my place cap was maxed, and I couldn't build anymore. After hours of building up one settlement, I'd need to spend hours savaging to restock my supply. And then it was off to the next settlement. However, I do wish they got attacked more often to test my defenses more.

Outside of settlements there was the quest lines. The main quest was interesting. And as always, I enjoy the multiple different endings to the game. And much like all the other games, the vast world to explore and loot keeps you playing for hours. This is a great game and a great addition to the series.

Fallout 4 is hands down one of the best games I've ever played that hooked me in for an incredible amount of time. Like all games it 's not without flaws and downsides of course, but as a whole it works very well.
Starting with the graphics and game engine, they are dated and initially (especially after playing The Witcher 3), it's feels like a huge downgrade. Saying that, after a while the graphics grew on me and I've come to appreciate the incredibly full and detailed world building of this game where there is nothing truly empty about the world. Whereas normally in open world games there are large empty spaces with a few roaming creatures/enemies, every inch of this world has a full story to tell if you're the type of person to appreciate that.
The 50s-60s theme just give it a natural aura of nostalgia that ties in perfectly with a post apocalyptic setting where you're meant to feel the tragic loss of the good old days. No other game achieves this level of melancholic nostalgia that's broken up with healthy doses of dark humour, silliness and downright dark theme changes. The world building is just incredibly immersive, interesting and fun.
Every aspect of the roleplay/gunplay/customisation are very decent and not overburdened/padded to insane levels which makes it very accessible once you get the hang of it (I find over-complicated systems and customisation detracts for the core experience of any game and acts more as a padding used when the actual game-play/storytelling/exploration is lacking).
One that point, the game doesn't hold your hand with tutorials which when you come out of the Vault can seem very overwhelming. However this genuinely adds to the overall experience of being thrown into a unknown, dangerous but yet familiar world you can relate to.

On the technical side, even though I bought the game a year after release, technical performance was not that good, however it's not bad enough to seriously detract from the experience.

Lastly the DLCs (especially Far Harbour) are pretty solid additions to the game well worth having and great for the price.

Overall I'd highly recommend the game as much as I would recommend The Witcher3 and HZD. For me these are the golden standard for the genre

Its more similar to Skyrim than Fallout 3 but a crappier Skyrim version.

The dumb down dialogue system was one of the dumbest decision they made. Guns are derivative. Power armor lost is novelty when it drops down to you at the early part of the game.

Base building was a nice idea but very very poorly executed. Characters were not memorable.

    2. This is my first Bethesda game
    3. No spoilers
    4. I mainly play Asian developed games and ARPGs
    5. Each section will be rated individually and averaged for overall score

    Story - 5
The mainline and faction stories are bland and are just used as a means to transport the player across the map. The endings especially, leave you feeling unfulfilled and do not have the pay-off that is required from an RPG. The good news is that it is quite short. The side stories are very intriguing and do pull the score up but the frequency is not there with only around 4 non-story quests that truly immersed me in the world.

    Audio - 3
The music is lackluster with ambiance preferred to musical storytelling with great opportunities to enhance the on screen story missed entirely. There are also very, very few tracks for an RPG. The sound design is also not good, with nearly all sounds taking away from the immersion. Frequent audio glitches are also present (roughly once per hour). This game would benefit massively from investing a lot more in the audio department.

    Graphics - 5
For the time it was released it is insufficient, but since the game is quite large I can't complain.

    Gameplay - 0
It hasn't been play-tested. During my 160 hours with the game there were 6 times losing over 5 hours progress due to quest bugs (e.g. Danse not speaking, Ballistic Weave bug, Characters dying automatically before being able to speak to them etc). A lot of quests and end-game materials were also bugged away from me as they were unable to be completed. Overall, a mess, I stopped playing for several weeks at a time because of this.

    RPG mechanics - 3
No depth. The skill trees are basic with no real tactical different caused after playing for a while (after discovering the map). The perks are mediocre and the leveling system could in fact be completely replaced by companion perks and magazines in my view. I am a grinder, but left with no investment in the systems. In terms of communication trees, they do redeem some points for giving the impression of choice, but there isn't really much there. Giving the character a voice also really retracts from role-playing.

    World Building/Sidequests - 2 (but could have been a 7)
Without bugs, this is a solid 7/10. There is lots to do, lots to see all quite fulfilling. They could do with some more scripted set pieces though. With bugs, you will need a guide to navigate you through the quests to avoid breaking the game. I ended up with 9 FAILED quests caused by completing the main story line because they couldn't be completed as I didn't have a previous save to return to. Be careful, this happened when I was using a guide to avoid the most serious ones.

    Content/Completionist rating - 1
There's lots of it, but a real lack of care is on show in the logic and assets. 160 hours, Level 81 (all perks etc), it has enough to keep you going for weeks. But you have to really persevere to get that far. I am a compulsive completionist that completes games once I've started them, I could not have finished the story if I didn't have the compulsion. WARNING: There are a lot of repeatable and tedious tasks that are asked of you that add no value to the game outside of doing them once (except for companion affinity). IT IS NOT WORTH COMPLETING THIS GAME. I became so angry and disillusioned with the whole process, it is one of the worst games I've completed for the bugs.

    Overall - 3 (rounded up)
If you like games for story, graphics, music or game play, don't buy this game. For World Building, it does do a quite decent job, if only because of the amount of lore and content it throws at you, so to each their own (I didn't think it was good). If you want an RPG with guns, this isn't it. I would not recommend this game.

You have your choices, you have your freedom, you have your farming choices and YOU are FREE to choose your character, their face, their build, whether thicc or slicc, muscular and beautiful, and etcetera, etcetera. There are literally way too many body and face combinations. Bam, nuke goes down like hell. You can go FREE mode and do some experiments and just laze, or, try to destroy the Institute! This is literally the best of the Fallout franchise. I just can't get enough of it. You can be a criminal or a police guarding DC, be an explorer, or be a steely member of the BoS! Ok, let's start. Firstly, you can BUILD. Unlike any other Fallout game, you can BUILD! Building things is the first clue to know that this is open world. You can go outside Boston, Kick some ass with a Mini Nuke, and kick back and drink a Nuka Cola. You can also go wherever you want. Even better, it covers, so many genres. Action. Adventure. Horror. Building. Sandbox. There are just so many. So, think of this as a real gift from Bethesda! You can just level and level, and level, and become the most badass survivalist in the Wasteland. Hate or Nora, there are truly no limits except for your imagination. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Fallout 4, when you get down it, is a game that achieves everything it sets out to do, its just that what it aims to be is another unambitious open-world adventure. The vanilla game itself runs well, though when there are any hiccups they are extremely noticeable but not game-breaking, same with the glitches which are, from my experience, almost entirely graphical. The game also tries to tell a narrative with multiple paths, which is maybe the most unengaging because of the plain dumb plot and the lack of significant story interaction. Progressing the story requires quest completion, which means completing simple tasks like killing enemies or interacting with something or someone, which isn't always terribly interesting but almost always clear to the player thanks to quest markers, though ultimately the entire game is just following the way point and making a lot of the same interactions. Combat is the game's greatest strength, every weapon feel great to use in bouts but a lot of the enemies you'll be fighting aren't all that interesting, with illusionary battle tactics from most of your combatants, they all may as well fight like Space Invaders. Players can also customize their abilities with perks, which is honestly just fine, their fun enough even the useless ones. Something new to Fallout is settlement building and crafting system, which sucks and is the most boring aspect, for some people along with me at least especially because its lacking and shoe-horned importance. Another big part of the game is the huge explorable open-world, which is incredibly detailed and is almost entirely filled with interesting locations, however some of the things you find or have do in these places may not really be all that interesting, Getting around to these places is easy with fast-travel, but I feel like a lot of the loading screens from doing so slow down the pace with later game loading taking significantly longer, i feel this wouldn't be a issue if the area around the locations was just more interesting same with the interior exits on to seemingly empty (but almost always) roof areas. As a whole the game is fine, if you like this sort of thing then play Fallout 4 but if you don't then prepare to be shutting the game off when your attention shifts to anything that isn't as dull. The gunplay is solid. Many options to craft your weapons.

The map is massive with varied ambient feel, depending on the location in the world.

The second thing is that the companions leave a lot to be desired, sometimes they get stuck in undesirable places and do not follow you correctly along the roads where you are going, they are some examples.
And finally, leaving aside the bugs, the game is quite easy, the first hours of game you get a power armor and a minigun, in a car repository there is a Fat Man (the most powerful weapon of the whole game) with a mini nuke, and is one of the areas closest to refuge 111.
But leaving aside the failures, the game is very fun.

Fallout 4 is a good game, god knows how many hours ive thrown at it, still not nearly as compelling as skyrim. The map is huge, and its Boston, which strikes a nostalgic tone on it and exploring it s very fun, yet the story is not as immersive. the protagonist talking doesn't help either. crafting feels half baked and settlement building gets grindy and pointless after a while.

I like the game! 50+ hours has spent in the postapocaliptic world! I like a lot of ways of weapon customization, developing facilities, cooperation with numerous NPCs.

I just started a new playthrough of Fallout 4, it really isn't good,is it? I cleared it on release and liked it. To warm up to FO 76, which I did not, and will not buy basically because it's even more watered out than FO4, I cleared FO3 and NV. I gave up on FO4 after about 10 hours, the pacing, skill, dialogue and quest trees are just bad and felt reduced so shortly after FO3 and NV. I seriously miss the skill checks in dialogue, and therefor the skill points system. I miss more dialogue options and quest branching. The building mechanics are just horribly boring and tedious. And hearing about 76, I think it would be close to the worst thing I could have played. I do hope they inject a little more RPG into their games again. Expand

Not a bad game by any means but this game could have used some improvements such as AI or a few graphical upgrades. But mods have seriously boosted this game up to at least a 7.9 score.

Fun way to pass the time but it's more of a sandbox for me than a real game. I haven't been bothered to do the main quest, which isn't very engaging. The combat system is meh and, while the game looks better than its predecessors, it's still relatively flat.
However, the open world remains fun to explore and the sheer amount of side quests make it worth playing.
All in all a pretty okay game.

Most of all, this game is like a parallel world that gives us a glimpse on how would our future be after a nuclear war, the chance to explore that world is a genius idea by itself, if you add the elements of RPG to it, with a decent graphics and some serious conversations, it will result of a jump in time, that I am sure is a chance for each Role Player gamer to experience.

I have played this game recently and I am so glad I kept it until these days, it gave me the chance to compare it to the recently issued games, and I swear it is still worth to experience, regardless on which console or platform you choose to play it on.

I am so confused looking at the 10/10s for this game. They don't list positives (other than a huge open world), and say the negative reviews are unwarranted. Lol what? And at times it is genuinely frustrating. I'm not one to compare different games across different genres, but Fallout 4 should be ashamed to even come out the same year as The Witcher 3. You might wonder why I bring up the The Witcher, but I'll get to that later on this review.
First of all, this game is not an RPG. It is an open world shooter. The dialogue wheel is a joke, deliberately ambiguous as to preserve an illusion of choice. Please do look up youtube videos where mods show actual dialogue. All quests boil down to the same repetitive, mundane cycle. Go somewhere, kill someone, come back with something. Typically, RPGS make these quests meaningful and worth doing by developing likable characters and by having an engaging and interesting plot-line. Fallout 4 does not do that. Not for its side-quests, not for its miscellaneous quests, and worst of all, not for its main quest. Every quest seems uninteresting. I helped the minutemen take back a fort, which involved a massive battle against nature, and it ended with a "huh, thanks. Be sure to help anyone in need. See ya around.". That's disgusting. Not trying to be hyperbolic, but that quest did not bring me a single ounce of joy. It was a chore. I did not feel happy at any point during that entire quest. It was worthless.
The reason this game sold well is because it is Fallout. Not the name, but the world. I see why. I loved Diamond City be an actual city. Shopkeepers hanging out in the bar after hours made the world seem alive. The noodle serving robot which only says one word in Japanese, but can communicate with your robot companions. A baseball enthusiast who has severely misunderstood what baseball is, and other interesting characters such as Hancock and an assaultron merchant who has a computer with a contingency plan for every citizen on her terminal. But it's almost as if Bethesda came up with random, quirky characters on the side. No one fits into your story particularly well. The world and characters are there, but they don't connect.
I will give you an encounter in the game which perfectly summarizes what you will experience throughout the entire game. I stumbled upon a cult of some sort called the "Pillars of the Community". Intrigued, I asked the well-dressed leader to tell me more about it. He went into his office and told me to come on in. I tried talking to the other cultists, but they wouldn't participate in any dialogue, just generic one liners. I went into his office, and it turns out the cult's only purpose was to make me give up my possessions. The cult-leader does not seduce or charm you into joining his cult. He literally tells you to hand over everything you own or to die. You can either start a shootout, give him everything, or threaten him. I threatened him and he told me I wasn't worth the trouble. That was it. That's the encounter, it ended right there. I was free to leave. What a waste of potential. It could have been so much fun convincing other cultists to rise up against their leader. Or maybe If the leader actually offered you something worth-while, and attempted to charm or trick you into joining the cult, that would have been fantastic. But that doesn't happen. There is no interactivity with this world. It's either A) Shoot B) Surrender C) Convince not to shoot. And in every other quest, you will not have the choice to surrender. So your only options are to shoot, or to leave.
The game features multiple companions. I will be frank. That is the only matter in which I felt I had a choice or control in. It was one of the only things in this pseudo-rpg where I could see the impact of my choices. Additionally, the game's flow is inorganic. Instead of side-quests developing on their own as the narrative progresses, such as in Fallout 2, instead, there is a button you can press which literally asks them if they have any work for you. And every single one of those quests has been a fetch-quest. Unbelievable. The world is filled with these. Again, giving the illusion that there is much to do, but actually it's the same quest with just different things to bring back. Mundane.
Unlike a worthwhile RPG like the Witcher, where you have choices, the choices matter and are impactful, the quests are interesting and engaging, and the characters make you care for the main quest. Fallout 4 fails to have any of these qualities. The main story is incredibly boring, even with a few good sets here and there.
I'm nearing the word limit, so let me end with this:
Buy this if you want a basic shooter with cosmetic RPG elements. Otherwise don't buy it. I have never struggled to finish a game before. Only saving grace is the world and some locations+companions. Mediocre. I would not recommend buying this.

A strong return for the franchise, boasting incredible customisation, a fascinating world and brutal yet brainy shooting, slightly tarnished by lacklustre AI and tedious inventory management. [Christmas 2015, p.88]

Feral Ghoul ugly in many ways, but beneath its iffy exterior beats the heart of one helluva great RPG. Get past the graphics deficiency, and the sheer thrill of Fallout 4’s combat, crafting options, and exploring will hold your attention for months. [January 2015, p64]

Fallout 4 leans to the Shooting side of things. It strips down the gameplay from the actual RPG elements and offers a meta-nuclaer shooting gallery which of course keep its charm and gameplay wealth but also feels a little too friendly for the new comers. The Base builder mode is unnecessary, boring and irritating. Unfortunately, overall, there are no steps forward for this Nuclear Holocaust Behemoth of the video games industry. Only steps sideways.
