Elex, concept interesting, execution meh, it has promise, open world, fleshed out dialogue and an abundance of various things to fight, but that is only a portion of the game, the rest falter short, being more a low budget RPG, than an interesting playable game.

Starting positive, it's alright, the graphics are not great, but that's not a major factor, for me at least, the vast open world is neat, and well executed, character dialogue is varied with multiple choices and not so boring information, and lastly the variety of things to battle, keeps the surplus of challenge relevant.

Now for the not so good things, lip sinking with character speech is off, but not game breaking, character movement is a little sluggish, though not too bad, and the feel of the game sways a little at times, sometimes wondering what the hell to do.

Now, for the things that this game failed at, for the lack of a better word. Story, shame, it seemed wobbly, unsure to exactly what the hell was going on, now I've only played a couple hours, but even now I want to put it down, the story had promise at the beginning with the opening cut scene, but fell off the radar soon as the game play instigated, leaving me with the though of, what just happened?

Combat, appalling in today's standard, Skyrim did it better, and that games ancient now, hell even Oblivion had richer combat, and that's even older, to put it into perspective, it's like soon has you engage battle everything around you is unimportant, as the character is solely focused on the enemies, animations don't make it better, often feeling slow, and with combat being an important item it's a real shame.

On a final note, it's not unplayable, it's more don't get your hopes up for another, kinda like Skyrim game, cos it's not, more like the by-product of the failed prototypes of Skyrim, it had promise, and that's all it had, the outcome was half decent at best.

If you plan to buy it, remember this is not the next Skyrim or Witcher, it's what they never were, for the wrong reasons.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I think those giving this game 0's and 10' are both ruining how we should really be scoring games/films on this site. Lets be straight for once whether you love or hate the game.

I am waiting for A.C Origins so over the past couple months I have re-visited a lot of games, a couple RPG's, that is Skyrim and the Witcher 3. I bought Elex to help pass the time before launch of A.C Origins at full price Canadian bucks on the PSN = $79.00 (NOT WORTH FULL PRICE MORE LIKE WORTH $49.00). I have spent the past couple days playing this game and its an average game. Well, everything is average except for the environmental visuals. At the core of this game I think the developers/writers have something, there is potential to perhaps break out of its shell of an average game for the next follow up to Elex. I had some fun reading about the lore and learning about the history, and some of the weapons and upgrades as well as armor were cool. The combat was sluggish and kind of slow almost like Dragon Age Origins but hey it was alright definitely wasn't game breaking just kind of annoying at times. The only real issues I have with this game so far are the framerates dropping while on my PS4PRO and the jetpack! Its like a super jump mod in Skyrim.

I don't understand some of the pure hate for this new IP but won't deny its not nearly perfect. I also don't understand the perfect scores of 10 and praise for it. Its an average game people, true RPG fans looking for a new IP should enjoy this game and I will most definitely keep playing it until A.C Origins releases.

    Thanks for reading. :)

    Calm the **** down.
The reason we see a continuous rehash of games that seem to be copies of one another is because we give no leeway for smaller companies trying to break into the AAA scene.
The game is not a masterpiece, but it's 100% enjoyable.

I'm not sure were people are coming up with this idea that there are no bugs or game play errors, i can assure that there are definitely some game breakers in this game, sections of the map were you will just fall through the game world, objects not loading in. Frame rate and latency issues on the PS4 Pro version, combat delay, i can barely play the game and i'm waiting on updates.I'm not sure were people are coming up with this idea that there are no bugs or game play errors, i can assure that there are definitely some game breakers in this game, sections of the map were you will just fall through the game world, objects not loading in. Don't get me wrong there are some good aspects of the game open world do what you want, the idea is sound, just how its been implemented could have been improved more, even pushed back the launch to fix the issues.

its getting a 5/10 due to the bugs broken, quest lines, animation issues, graphical issues, frame rate issues, latency problems only thing making it worthy of the 5 is the concept of the game.

i find it odd that some of the user reviewers are rating all 3 platforms 10/10, when Xbox is having same problems, and the PC platforms is marginally better, bought all 3 platforms? for one game how much money!

ELEX is an Action RPG developed by Piranha Bytes, a studio that many should know, not always for the best reasons, but that has brought us the Gothic franchise. At ELEX, the studio set aside the purely medieval aspect and joined fantasy with technology. Settling into an apocalyptic era, the protagonist joins the war over a powerful feature, called "ELEX", which gives people magical powers. The game world is a mixture of futurism and medieval locations along with icy mountains, volcanic mountains and desert environments.

The events take place on a planet called Magalan, after being hit by a meteorite, the survivors formed groups and fight for their survival and the destiny of the planet. The protagonist is a member formed of the Albs, a group that consumes ELEX to put aside the emotions and to base their decisions only in the logic. Recovering from an accident he had with his ship, the protagonist goes through the abstinence of ELEX experiencing emotions for the first time in his life, turning him into a traitor. As a consequence, the protagonist will have to hide his history and his old identity of the factions that previously were his enemies.

The player can cooperate and join one of three factions: The Berserkers (renounced modern technology and the use of ELEX), The Clerics (fanatically worship a god called Calaan and operate as a religious police state where consuming ELEX is expressly forbidden) or The Outlaws (they have no leader and operate through the "survival of the fittest" mentality, using improvised and deadly weapons and consume the ELEX in the form of specialized stimulant drugs). A plus for the ELEX story mode is the amount of unexpected twists.

As soon as I started playing my first few hours on ELEX, it reminded me of games like Fallout (3, New Vegas and 4), Mad Max and The Witcher 3. The player will be able to do a lot of things, complete missions, crafting and pick up objects (eg ELEX), among other things. Of note is the fact that the map is super vast, with its colorful scenarios, although the game has some visual bugs, for example, there was something that sometimes bothered me when I was using the technology (to see the map, see the purpose of the missions, etc.) of the protagonist. Scenarios and buildings are sometimes filled with monstrous creatures and machines that we must defeat or sneak through without being discovered.

Each time we kill an enemy or complete a quest, we gain experience and if we level up we gain 10 attribute points that we can use in 5 options: Strength (increases melee damage and unlocks certain items and abilities), Constitution (increases the life energy bar and unlock certain items and abilities), Dexterity (increases ranged damage and unlocks certain items and abilities), Intelligence (depending on your faction, increases mana or PSI power and unlocks new abilities) and Cunning (increases our skills social, if you are Outlaw, increases the chem capacity).

The protagonist can also learn new skills depending on the amount of Elexit, Skill points and Strength, Constitution, Dexterity, Intelligence and Cunning. ELEX has a huge range of weapons, armor and items, which offers a good amount of equipment options to use in combat.

The ELEX combat is a bit weird and unbalanced, due to inaccurate hitboxes and animations, especially in the attack area. Not to mention that the game has an exaggerated difficulty, even in easy. There are certain quests that made me pull my hair. For example, there is a quest in which I have to save an individual from four armed robbers to the teeth. Obviously it would be suicide to face the four at the same time and to avoid this, I had to go to the back of the enemy who initiates the attack and face them one by one along with my companion. The AI of our companions is to take the hat... by the negative. During the fights, it seems that their brain is frozen for about 5-10 seconds to know whether or not to attack the enemy, and it was my desire to send them a beautiful scream.

And the conclusion I get is this, unfortunately for Piranha Bytes, the inconveniences of ELEX have screw up what could be a good game, and instead, it's just a medium game. Too bad, because when I saw the first gameplay of the game, it seemed to have great potential. I advise the people to wait for updates and a promotion of the game.

For a game that only had like 25 people working on it, this is a decent rpg. There were some bugs that i had only the first few days of release but, i am still enjoying playing it. this game has a story but it is mostly focused on exploration of the decent size open world. The fighting can seem clunky at times but overall this game is fun and enjoyable. i would have have it a better scoreFor a game that only had like 25 people working on it, this is a decent rpg. Most dicisions wont do anything.
Best weapon is bow/gun - they give only 1 skill for it. But for melee weapons - 5(five!!) skills!! that you'll never use (since shooting is best choice)
Worst platinum ever - 40 hours of standing and doing nothing!

The first half of the game takes way too long and the last part is just really boring. | Piranha Bytes actually just did re-release Gothic (3) again.... in 2017. If it would have helped the product by cutting 50% content... they should have spent those resources into polish! But maybe the engine is just not capable helping them out enough. I dont know. Again... exploring the hand crafted open world is cool but the game has far too many issues otherwise. Expand

    ### Deutsche Review ###

    2. DIE KAMERA
Diese macht einfach was sie will manchmal.

Another game that had interesting concepts with poor execution. This game has got to have the most jarring spam rolling around like a idiot mechanic I have ever played in a game. The first 10-15 hours was a very slow paced tough grind. I would say initially Fallout 4 on very hard is easier than Elex on easy mode. The starting character is a action hero built out of wet paper that can't even wipe his own arse without dying.

The mix of very diverse factions like the high tech clerics, old world looking battle mages and post-apocalyptic junkers was very cool. The general story made sense and was engaging enough. A big fun huge map to explore with many a interesting local really helped.

The VA and the general writing is bad. Combat and animations feels Gothic/Risen bad. The overall dated game play holds this experience back. Old school gaming ARPG with a semi-modern face lift. This is a game I really want to like, but really have a really hard time doing so. The amount of times I have stopped and started this game is unreal. Performance is not that great and the frame rate badly dips the more stuff is going on the screen.

After trying assassin's creed odissey, I was more than happy to play this old school rpg with NO level scaling.

The strong point is definitely the quest & faction system. Almost every quest give you multiple choices and decisions may alter your possible alliance with a faction. eg. I was denied access to the berserker faction because I stole and betray too many npc. I never got caught but

I was denied access to the berserker faction because I stole and betray too many npc. I never got caught but the raise of the crime rate juste after my arrival in the city did not go unnoticed. This is what I called a real rpg. World design is really good imo with a lot of variety, hand placed rewarding loots and some vertical exploration thanks to the jet pack.

Combat is really average with bad hit boxes. Progression is too hard due to a lack of mission for low levels players. You have to spend 10 hours hiding behind a friend npc who will do all the fighting for you in order to level up. Graphic is last Gen. Music is average. But despite all this, it is still a better game than a triple A assassin's creed... Looking forward for the sequel.

Elex is the RPG game of the old era, made by the old guard for the old guard. It has a lot of charm and magic hidden inside its massive world but its clunky elements will probably prove to be a dealbreaker for newer gamers that didn’t grew up with the same issues that persist Piranha Bytes games since Gothic.

Elex is far from perfect. It can be a frustrating experience and the horrible combat system could be a deal breaker, but it’s undeniably an ambitious title with a promising future.
