Numerous cool characters, beautiful Chinese background, unremitting action, fast game play
The downside is that the normal ps4 frame is bad. I will trust the patch. please.
I hope the grandeur of the background is better.

Let me start off this review by saying I am not a fan of dynasty warriors. They've never interested me, aside from the spin offs like the berserk and open piece musou style games. This new entry dynasty warriors 9 however is a whole different story. When i first heard that the next game in the series was going to be an open world game my interest peaked. I thought a dynasty warriors in an open world setting would be new and exciting and boy was i right. I Don't get all the hate around this game. The open world is big and fun to explore though a bit empty and barren but i still like it, battles feel more intense as they happen in this big world instead of the small level or mission design of previous titles. The character roster is huge with 90 characters playable all with their own set of weapons, moves and upgrades. These characters are unlocked over the course of the game across various factions and roaming around as each one of them could add even more hours of gameplay. The graphics are decent as the game can look really great at times and i haven't had any big framerate drops or bugs that some have been having. Character designs are top notch each one looks very unique and of the era. Textures could use some work but the game looks pretty good as a whole. Overall I'm enjoying it i think omega force did a great job bringing this stagnant series to the open world genre. It being their first attempt at an open world musou, i believe they can improve upon alot of criticisms in future titles I hope to see more titles approached this way. Don't believe all the hate and negativity surrounding this title. It may be different than past musou games but i think it's all the better for it especially when it tries new things, and for the most part it succeeds. It's a very fun game with tons of content and hours upon hours of gameplay. If you have any interest in an open world style musou game i say give it a shot you may be as surprised and impressed as i was. 9.5/10

I enjoyed DW9, not as much as Orochi 4, but it was a nice change. It is open and thete is empty space , like ebery new game. Byt the hit gurl warriors are still here as is the samurai badarses, combat is as great as ever, I had fun..PS4 and pro had big performance issues though.

I feel like I need to say something on Dynasty Warriors 9, with Jim Sterling making not one, not two but three pointless videos on the damn thing and giving a false representation of the game along with some bandwagon haters. I'm gonna start off by saying and fully admitting that this game is a big technical mess. Honestly, most of the glitches have been hilarious in some fashion and I got some enjoyment out of them as you would from Skyrim's. Other ones, however, involve the graphics completely flipping out and damn near making it unplayable. And yes the framerate is bad. I find myself able to forgive a lot this aside the bits where I have to restart the game over the graphics flipping because, in a way, it gives it some charm, but more importantly; it doesn't hamper the gameplay much at all. Another problem I have actually had to do with Lianshi, one of my favorite characters in the series, using these stupid f***ing hoop-claw things. If you didn't know, she used to use a crossbow and it was cool and fun and unique(at least when she was introduced). So I do agree with people on this aspect of changing people's weapons for no damn reason being really stupid. I will also half agree that the gameplay isn't as good as past entries but I don't think it's complete ass either like most do. I still have quite a lot of fun with it.

So far it probably seems I have no reason to rant with mostly agreeing with these negatives. Thing is though; I actually have positives. Completely serious: I like the open world and the stuff you can do in it. Requests are basic side quest nonsense that rewards materials and money and experiences. There is a reason to do them at least since the materials can be used to craft items and weapons notably accessories that can help with various things and gems to make aspects of your weapon better. It's basic but it works and there's a reason and can be worthwhile. Now the main quest will have, basically, side objectives to tackle around the map and accomplishing them can influence how the main battle plays out. It's by no means needed and doesn't always add much but it's fun because I like employing tactics even if games don't do much with them.

To focus on the open world aspect more specifically; I'm going to start off by saying I normally hate open world games. The only ones I've really enjoyed are the Assassin's Creed games. I like this one because of some of what I said above but also because exploring seems more worth it to me. Finding cities and camps often benefit you and your forces if you're in a battle and often times you can find some materials or items to collect. Again, nothing amazing, but far from 'complete sh*t'. You can also find houses to buy and decorate. I'm not far enough in to have used them much, but just the option is pretty cool to me.

Sidenote on hunting, since Jim harped on it for two videos: I never gave a sh*t about hunting in games, I hate hunting on principle and I always avoid it in all games. It being trash is fine with me, I even welcome it. F*ck hunting in games, I hate doing it and being forced into it by some. I never even got the achievements for hunting in games like Fable II(kill a rabbit) and Black Flag(kill an Orca). This game I can just avoid those quests since some of the materials you get out of it can just be had from rewards.

Also, traveling is perfectly fine in this. I've had zero issues with my horse, so I don't know what Jim's big problem with it is. Using auto-run is just stupid on principle because it takes forever anyway. and fast travel is as convenient and optional as it should be, so whatever. Again, I think most are just mindless haters are just full of sh*t on this game.

Anyways, all-in-all: The game is a mess but I'm still having a lot of fun. I'd say it's way better than DW8, which I thought was just extremely boring and barebones as all hell. Going from here I definitely want the old combat back in DW10 and for the love of god they better give people their weapons back. Whether it should stay open world or not? I'm not sure. I think I'd like them to just refine the old formula and focus more on an engine that can finally realize some of the previous games' ambitions of scale. I think DW10 should be a return to form. I'm enjoying this game but I enjoyed past entries a lot more... except for DW6 and 8. DW3-5 were better and DW7 is still the best one yet. DW2, meh, good start I guess.

Most of this was spurred by Jim's videos but I've also seen a few other people jumping on the hate train and just sh*t on the graphics without having played it or anything, like, okay, just stop. I usually agree with Jim, including on most DW stuff but this time I was actually getting pissed off. He really seemed to just be talking out his ass about some of the problems he brought up like the combat and open world is "empty"(bull-f***ing-sh*t, there's a load to do, it's actually kind of obnoxious at times.

Overall I'm pretty happy with DW9, it's a fantastic leap forward for the game. I actually didn't realize how "open world" the open world was for the first couple of missions until I was revisiting the different cities and was like "oh....OH.....the map is ALL of China!!!"

I'm not a fan of the new combat system when fighting officers, it somehow feels more stale than the old system.

I'm not a fan of the new combat system when fighting officers, it somehow feels more stale than the old system. Charge X, Mash Square, Repeat with slight variations of Charge Square or Charge Triangle. If they had kept the traditional 6 Attacks and different charge attack levels and ADDED the trigger attacks it would be fantastic. However, fighting the regular troops still gives that satisfaction of wiping out armies single handed.

I don't like the "auto-kill" when an officer gets low, it makes sense for some of the minor officers such as "Assault Captain" but I shouldn't get to Autokill LuBu when he has about 2 lifebars left.

So far, even the famous officers haven't offered any challenge (just playing on Normal for now) the most they do is a combo or two, or just roll away and stare at me. Hopefully it's better on harder difficulties.

However just about everything else, I'm loving, the progression system, crafting, all the new items, side quests--if you want to do them, despite the FPS issues, the graphics feel great, and it feels more like a living world the more you play in it. I'm only about....10-12 hours in....Battle of Wulin on Wei for my first playthrough as Cao Cao. But the more I play, the more I am enjoying the game.

Horrible frame rate, worst voice acting since DW2, repetitive combat even by Warriors standard and overall a disappointing experience. I'm also not a big fan of open-world games anymore, since it's in every damn game nowadays. And the world in DW9 is kinda boring.
The only thing I could think of while playing the first hour was: "this is not the game I've been waiting for since DW8, almost 5 years ago".

But then the patch came out and the framerate got a lot better, and I gave it a few more hours, and oh boy the game got better. The combat is kinda smooth and the new combo system is quite nice. I like the way the story is handled, kinda interesting to see a new way of telling the same old story in Dynasty Warriors. The big open-world is still boring but it's starting to grow on me, especially since it's the only gameworld where I really feel like i'm taking part in a huge battlefield.

Even with it's ups and downs, I do respect Omega Force for trying something new.

It might not be the Dynasty Warriors 9 I wanted, and compared to Dynasty Warriors 8 it's a step back, but if you're a fan of Warriors/Musou like me, then give it a try. It gets better, you just gotta give it some time.

Just remember to change the voices to japanese or chinese.

Although the Dynasty Warriors series is not as well known as the Final Fantasy series, it is already turning 21. But will Omega Force be able to take this Dynasty Warriors 9 to success and make them forget the previous titles? I would say no and I'll explain why.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a Hack 'n' Slash game (Musou) in the third person view with small Stealth elements and the overall goal of the game is to enter enemy bases, knock down a huge amount of opponents and knock down the enemy boss. For the first time in the series Dynasty Warriors, we have an open world format game, and that is the map of China. The user can walk freely, on horseback or by canoe, as well as buy, sell and craft certain things. The Day-Night cycle and rain are also present in this game.

As in previous Dynasty Warriors, the story of Dynasty Warriors 9 follows the Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". This same story is told through the 94 playable characters in the game who come from the four biggest clans: Wei, Wu, Shu and Jin, so it will take some time to realize what really goes on during the game. Initially we can only choose one of the three officers from the Wei, Wu and Shu clans: Cao Cao (Wei), Sun Jian (Wu) and Liu Bei (Shu). The story can be enjoyable because of the interweaving of the characters.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, most main missions and side missions aim to break into enemy bases, knock down huge numbers of enemies and defeat the enemy boss. Sometimes we have to invade certain territories before we go to the final territory, so that our comrades can go to the front line, to demoralize the enemies, etc. The action is frantic and it's funny to feel like we're a god because we're defeating over a thousand soldiers. However, the game loses immense quality because we are repeating the same type of mission, now imagine that with 94 characters. Yes, we can perfectly turn the game without crafting, with the exception of healing items. I sense that this Dynasty Warriors 9 could have perfectly an online co-operative mode in the style of the Far Cry series. Dynasty Warriors 9 has a good range of weapons from blades, spears, bows, among others, which slightly alleviates repetitive missions and the fact that the fighting is little deep due to the lack of slight variation.

The map is fantastically vast, with lots of gorgeous natural sites to explore and places to conquer and visit. Graphically speaking, the characters are well designed and treated, despite the game having a few houses with few details and still have some graphic issues in most places even after the 1.03 update. The soundtrack, the voices of the actors (Chinese) and the sound effects perfectly fit the Chinese environment of the game.

Also note that the player can hunt animals and fish, which can later be used in the Teahouse to temporarily increase our attack, defense and other statistics. When upgrading points, which can be earned through unusual enemies, the player can use them for Health Bar, Musou (special technique), Stamina, Attack, Defense, Power, Toughness, Speed and Bow Skill.

It is also possible to make Reforge the weapons either in the Trigger Attack (Launch, Stun and Knock-Down) or Reactive Attack (Counter, Guard Break and Assault), which can be embedded with Gems obtained, such as Colt Gem that temporarily gives + 1% damage when standing on the horse and gives 3 more Attack Speed.

Overall, Dynasty Warriors 9 is not a bad game, but was hampered by the enormous repeatability of the missions and technical errors. Maybe, who knows, if in the next Dynasty Warriors, the Omega Force will do better the homework, but it will be very difficult to believe.

Verdict: If you have Chinese patience and if you don't care about the mistakes, Dynasty Warriors 9 can be a good game.

Everything in the game are like feather. When I play the game, I do not feel any weight in it. According to the broken physics, the charecters' motions are lifeless and look unnatural when each part of their body or cloth moves. Second of all, the game play is quite boring. Just mashing buttons again and again. How you play the game in your first 30 mins will be the same as when you spend the next 20-30 hours. It is really repetitive because you have to do the same thing again and again, so you just mash the buttons over and over for hours. There is no variety of missions since you just go kick some bosses' asses to make a progress in the story, even the side missons are not that different from the main ones. So, that's why the core gameplay is repetitive. Next, the collectibles including crafting systems are not attractive enough to go and collect them. Third of all, the presentation is weak because the cutscenes are dull, lifeless and ugly. They are not fun to watch. Moreover, the dialogue scenes are so borinh that I don't care to watch even though I love reading the Three Kingdoms novels. As a result, with low-end graphic, cheap production value, broken physics, repititive gameplay, and uninspired story presenation, the game is not worth your time and money, and it is listed as one of the most disappointing game of 2018. The open world, ok, good idea but it doesn't work for me. Especially because of the teleport which kind of break the immersion. Or the grapple to climb walls making attacking a place... Easy to say the least. It's an empty world with very few people to fight overall.
The combat system.. OMG what a shame ! They're was a perfectly working system in all previous games, they turned it into a "press square to win". No strategy whatsoever as your character will automatically attack whoever he wants, sometimes having to turn around or dash a little to attack an enemy when you wanted to hit the one in front of you. You can lock an enemy to attack him and that's it. Then press square! There are a few counters, then a finisher. Interesting idea but makes it even easier.
The mission system could be interesting, but the gameplay just ruins it. Attacking a castle is only climbing the walls using the grapple, and killing the officers inside. Quite blank here.
The craft system is just here to give you a weapon then forget about it.
Much fewer weapons than previous games. Much fewer items also.
Bonding with officers has absolutely no interest not rewards.
    Tons of loadings.
Some enemies don't appear. I thought those issues were over but no, they're back!
The horse can automatically run to the destination but good luck with the most broken path finding ever. You either end up running around or blocked somewhere.
    Everything seems broken or unfinished.
If you want to have fun, you should rather buy any of the previous games.

Especially when the weapons unlocked now have a limited moveset thanks to the weapon no longer being the character's main weapon any more.

The story mode is lazy and boring. Any amount of interesting cutscenes you'd see in the other games is completely removed and instead just shows a character that walks on screen, says something, and another character moves. Rinse and repeat. There are a handful of interesting cutscenes, but they are few and far between.

The only good thing I can say about this game is that it looks real nice, for a Dynasty Warriors game. It looks pretty average compared to many other big name games. In fact, I kinda prefer the look of the older games. Yeah, they look dated but they have a fun style.

I'd stay away from this one. If you want a better Dynasty Warriors experience, go with 8 Xtreme Legends or 8 Empires.

Seizure inducing garbage. Game plays like a constantly buffering video. There's really no point going into the specifics. This is just bad, trust me please. Don't waste your time

This is absolutely the worst installment of the Warriors series. I've played every single Dynasty Warriors game including the Extreme Legends and Empires spin offs and this is the only game series I've played that seems to get worse and worse. -Cons Just about everything. Graphics, Disappointing combo system, Grapple Hook that literally lets you skip EVERYTHING. The whole weapon system is just bad insane drawn out running from A,B to C back to A. Every single area feels the same and very washed down and lazy.

-Pros Character Design I love they are pushing new characters but this game was poorly done.

I expected a lot from this but is so pathetic that they thought this game was what we wanted... This is the first game I will not buy Empires or Xtreme Legends.

Literally I wanna walk into Koei and Fire there whole team that worked on this game.

I was a bit looking forward to this game but I had my doubts. Lots of it, and unfortunately my doubts became real. The game was meant to refresh the series from stagnant mechanics and this one struck the series across its legs and cause the entire series to collapse. I don't think this the series will survive this latest installment.

Ok...Ive played this game for...about a hour... And I am seriously considering bringing this back.
The whole concept of having a Dynasty Warriors game be open world just screamed "Oh boy, I can now roam China with non stop killing." I was wrong... The world seems empty and dull. Hunting animals are tacked on and the gathering is stupid..
Now on to the best parts....or worst.... They

They changed the whole combat system and it sucks...it sucks hard. Its more "mash Square" then it has ever been and it seems like its trying to be 4 or 5 different games in one. Batman's context counters, Far Cry's gathering/crafting sprinkled with some Just Cause grappling hook nonsense and DMC's main combat system. I want DW8's combat back. it was fluid. It was clean. It was 5000% better then this.

Combat system aside... The graphics and performance is sub par. So much so that this game reminds me of PS2 days(PS3 for the character models). Drastic frame rate drops, textures not loading/loading so slow you see the seams, and the miserable voice acting. It has never been this bad. I walked up to a castle with flags on the roof...They were not moving. Just static at full wave like it was constantly windy but they didn't move. The animations on characters, clothing and, hell, even the combat is bad. Its stiff. There is no polish in this game. Its like they shipped the alpha version of the game. And lets not forget the terrible animal textures.

I am a long time Dynasty Warriors fan...And I'm telling you to not get this game. Avoid it until its either fixed(That's going to require a massive overhaul) or its so cheap you can get it for a song. I'm trading this in for a game i know isn't going to be busted.

Just tried it again with the patch they threw out. 1.03 i think it is...it helps the frame rate issues...but they are still terrible. Even small battles turn into running in mud slow.

Aperently those with PS4 Pros are having fewer issues in regards to frame rate.

I am still returning this game.

P.S to the "critic" who game this game a 100 rating... How much were you paid to write that?

In theory a lot has changed in the latest Dynasty Warriors (open world being the most notable addition) but in reality it’s the same game. It can be really enjoyable and at times impressive in terms of scale, but I got bored with it quite quickly. [04/2018, p.72]

It’s such a shame to see the state of this franchise in 2018. Dynasty Warriors deserved better than this, and I hope Omega Force gets another shot to do this franchise justice, because this is not how the tales of the Three Kingdoms should end.

A huge step, but in the wrong direction. [Issue#198, p.80]
