Huge fan of dynasty warriors 5. Playing the game all the time with my brother when I was a kid. Really hope that there could be a new and great dynasty warriors game. So far they have failed me 4 times in a row....

It is a good sign that they design the game in a whole new way comparing with the previous games. But it is obviously not a completed product. The side quest is meaningless

I had a lot of issues with this game. This is the least enjoyable Dynasty Warriors game I’ve ever played by far.

    * Very empty open world, spending a lot of time traveling from point A to B with nothing of interest in between points. There is fast travel however, it usually only takes you about half way there, still leaving you with a solid 30 secs to a minute of bland and boring horseback

There is fast travel however, it usually only takes you about half way there, still leaving you with a solid 30 secs to a minute of bland and boring horseback travel for no reason.

    * Help menus that are supposed to pop up as new mechanics are introduced however, they don’t pop up to explain when you’re ready. By that, you’re still completely unable to fish/tame animals etc when they pop up as they pop up when you first see a wolf or when you receive a fishing ingredient randomly (you still don’t have all that’s needed to do the thing they’re teaching you about) leaving you annoyed as you have to stop what you’re doing to read the thing and then spend the effort to try and remember the details (then inevitably forget)

    * Second fight in campaign mode left me frustrated. Dozen archer towers w archers that all aim at your character (nobody else) with perfect aim that take out 20% of your health. No arrow incoming indicator. You can shoot arrows at them however you’re vulnerable to the men on the ground who will be attacking you, you’re also outranged by them by a significant margin.

    * You also start the game off only being able to play as Cao Cao (totally fine) however you almost immediately unlock about 20 characters that ALL RECEIVE the same 10 second guitar-shredding intro back to back to back. It was honestly actually funny. It was *this* close to being a plus.

    * This story is yet again the exact same thing as every other DW game for some reason? Starts off with the rise of the yellow turban rebellion?

    * It took me **2 and a half hours** to finish all the objectives in the first mission? Idk if you’re not supposed to play it like that. Maybe you’re only supposed to do *some* of them, game didn’t say any of them were optional or more secondary than others, so I went ahead and did that. The game organizes the missions by having the “beat the head general” objective at the top and then every other objective is listed underneath without too much guidance as to which one(s) are more helpful to defeating the whole battle. Mind you I’ve put in a TON of hours into precious DW games and I know how to navigate battles. While you used to just be able to look at the map and sort of create a path to victory as in previous DW games, this map is honestly enormous and doesn’t really let you know how to create your path to victory nearly as well.

This honestly left me turning off my console just feeling terrible about my purchase. Really disappointed that this is the most recent DW game. It honestly may have turned me off for quite a long time unless they manage to do something different and with an actual purpose next time. Pros

    * The combat felt like DW. Makes you feel very powerful

    * you can choose your weapon no matter what officer

    * there’s a shop/blacksmith system that you navigate in a city with your chosen officer.

    * you can forage to craft items although foraging feels to take away from what you want to be doing in this game * there is fishing.

Do yourself a favor, take note of which critics gave this game great reviews and ignore their opinions on anything ever again. There's just so so so much wrong with this "game" it's like a ps1 game that somehow just got released. Go watch Jim sterling tear this game apart and even THAT doesn't cover everything. I got this game on psn for 2 bucks and it's still a huge ripoff

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. The worst part is changing the fast paced and cool moves of the characters for a plain and slow fighting style and worse, change from a fun combo to a boring gameplay. Other thing is that someone took all the characters soul sfrom them and now they look like they dont feel much from what happens. When guan yu died in 7 and 8 i felt really sad, here i thought ok. I really hope empires fix some of that since i love this franchise a lot. Expand

The initially released version of the game is a disaster in the graphics especially frame per second. However the newest version has fixed that problem.

I enjoyed DW9, not as much as Orochi 4, but it was a nice change. It is open and thete is empty space , like ebery new game. Byt the hit gurl warriors are still here as is the samurai badarses, combat is as great as ever, I had fun..PS4 and pro had big performance issues though.

The combat by it self makes wanna break my console, please just bring back the old DW 4 combat when it really feels like you are a warrior by fighting strong armies, with DW9 it feels like fighting papers! I have never seen a game that makes the armies 3ft tall this is stupid!!! The playable Characters are NOT giants!!!! Adjust the heights!! Like how they were in DW2-DW3-DW4.
I have gave only 1 point for the open world not going to deny it interesting to explore but you guys can make it more alive with moree Mysteries to explore! No they are not at all it just makes the game boring and makes me play any character with one weapon.. then just get rid off all of the characters and let me edit my characters and choose any weapon i want, yes that what i meant it felt like i always play with one character with a different SKIN!!! I really really hope you guys listen this time
Please just bring back -the combat
-each character has his/her own weapon (unchangeable)
-Army Sizes -better AI like how they used to be in DW2-3-4

I will say Thanks after bringing us back the true DW.

The gameplay loop has been worsened this time around. Attacks don't feel like they actually hit anything, walls which used to be difficult to get past in the previous games can now be circumvented by using the grappling hook, and, worst of all, they removed many fan favorite weapons. But, they not only removed the fan favorite weapons, they also sold them back to us as DLC. It's ridiculous and scummy of them. Especially when the weapons unlocked now have a limited moveset thanks to the weapon no longer being the character's main weapon any more.

The story mode is lazy and boring. Any amount of interesting cutscenes you'd see in the other games is completely removed and instead just shows a character that walks on screen, says something, and another character moves. Rinse and repeat. There are a handful of interesting cutscenes, but they are few and far between.

The only good thing I can say about this game is that it looks real nice, for a Dynasty Warriors game. It looks pretty average compared to many other big name games. In fact, I kinda prefer the look of the older games. Yeah, they look dated but they have a fun style.

I'd stay away from this one. If you want a better Dynasty Warriors experience, go with 8 Xtreme Legends or 8 Empires.

Having played all of thrm since DW2, this one is by far the worst of the serie.
It's nice to see the game receiving updates and finally having a co-op mode, and the narrative is quite deep for some characters especially. Maybe too deep as they really talk A LOT.
Besides that, not much to praise... The open world, ok, good idea but it doesn't work for me. Especially because of the teleport

The open world, ok, good idea but it doesn't work for me. Especially because of the teleport which kind of break the immersion. Or the grapple to climb walls making attacking a place... Easy to say the least. It's an empty world with very few people to fight overall.
The combat system.. OMG what a shame ! They're was a perfectly working system in all previous games, they turned it into a "press square to win". No strategy whatsoever as your character will automatically attack whoever he wants, sometimes having to turn around or dash a little to attack an enemy when you wanted to hit the one in front of you. You can lock an enemy to attack him and that's it. Then press square! There are a few counters, then a finisher. Interesting idea but makes it even easier.
The mission system could be interesting, but the gameplay just ruins it. Attacking a castle is only climbing the walls using the grapple, and killing the officers inside. Quite blank here.
The craft system is just here to give you a weapon then forget about it.
Much fewer weapons than previous games. Much fewer items also.
Bonding with officers has absolutely no interest not rewards.
    Tons of loadings.
Some enemies don't appear. I thought those issues were over but no, they're back!
The horse can automatically run to the destination but good luck with the most broken path finding ever. You either end up running around or blocked somewhere.
    Everything seems broken or unfinished.
If you want to have fun, you should rather buy any of the previous games.

So the big selling point of this game its open world and for a company that is super lazy in the making their games this automatically had me worried and i can say these worries where well founded when i played it, koei has made a super bland open world with not much in it with an ok day and night cycle to add insult to injury the battles have been separated in to little fetch quests which have you running around this bland environment wondering why they could't implement full battles in these places instead, voice acting is awful and ok their is a big cast but most sound bad with maybe one or two sounding ok, the roster is impressive the deign of the characters look pretty good but unfortunately combat feels really bad and we have lost a lot of weapons i mean where is zhang he claws at? in summary an open world dynasty warriors sounds like a good idea if the right amount of time, effort and money where put into it unfortunately this isn't even close a bad tech demo stay away. First off the open world is an interesting aspect but it falls short as there is nothing in between locations, bases are generic that involve killing 2 or 4 units and the castle battle are just insulting, the grapple feature just breaks the game allowing players to jump over walls and killing the general inside, sadly this makes up most of the game as enemies will not pursue you nor attempt to stop you from beating up the lifeless general inside. The other issue that I have personally found is that the generals don't render in, my character is batting off enemies while waiting for the general to pop in and then as the said general is the only thing worth fighting.

The game feels completely empty, they should have named the game Chinese horse riding simulator with occasional gathering and fighting. Now fighting itself is dead as a doornail in this entry to the series. Mash 1 button with occasional Musou attack and that's it, while they have reintroduced archery most arrows will bounce off their targets and mainly serves to shoot wild animals for materials. Fishing is also a sad joke, mash 1 button and tada fish. The hideaway mechanic seemed like a good idea at first but mostly it serve's to remind you how empty the game is, and inviting officers over to bond revolves of them asking "Feed Me" and if you remembered to buy a stove, you are now playing how to make a cat like you simulator.

My final note, this game has so much potential but as it stands right now id suggest holding off until they add more to the game, I hope if they continue making Extreme legends and Empires. My first suggestion is, get rid off that grappling hook or limit it to mountain climbing. Second, add more objectives to sieges and for the love of god improve the A.I

I'm gonna start off by saying and fully admitting that this game is a big technical mess. Honestly, most of the glitches have been hilarious in some fashion and I got some enjoyment out of them as you would from Skyrim's. Other ones, however, involve the graphics completely flipping out and damn near making it unplayable. And yes the framerate is bad. I find myself able to forgive a lot this aside the bits where I have to restart the game over the graphics flipping because, in a way, it gives it some charm, but more importantly; it doesn't hamper the gameplay much at all. Another problem I have actually had to do with Lianshi, one of my favorite characters in the series, using these stupid f***ing hoop-claw things. If you didn't know, she used to use a crossbow and it was cool and fun and unique(at least when she was introduced). So I do agree with people on this aspect of changing people's weapons for no damn reason being really stupid. I will also half agree that the gameplay isn't as good as past entries but I don't think it's complete ass either like most do. I still have quite a lot of fun with it.

So far it probably seems I have no reason to rant with mostly agreeing with these negatives. Thing is though; I actually have positives. Completely serious: I like the open world and the stuff you can do in it. Requests are basic side quest nonsense that rewards materials and money and experiences. There is a reason to do them at least since the materials can be used to craft items and weapons notably accessories that can help with various things and gems to make aspects of your weapon better. It's basic but it works and there's a reason and can be worthwhile. Now the main quest will have, basically, side objectives to tackle around the map and accomplishing them can influence how the main battle plays out. It's by no means needed and doesn't always add much but it's fun because I like employing tactics even if games don't do much with them.

To focus on the open world aspect more specifically; I'm going to start off by saying I normally hate open world games. The only ones I've really enjoyed are the Assassin's Creed games. I like this one because of some of what I said above but also because exploring seems more worth it to me. Finding cities and camps often benefit you and your forces if you're in a battle and often times you can find some materials or items to collect. Again, nothing amazing, but far from 'complete sh*t'. You can also find houses to buy and decorate. I'm not far enough in to have used them much, but just the option is pretty cool to me.

Sidenote on hunting, since Jim harped on it for two videos: I never gave a sh*t about hunting in games, I hate hunting on principle and I always avoid it in all games. It being trash is fine with me, I even welcome it. F*ck hunting in games, I hate doing it and being forced into it by some. I never even got the achievements for hunting in games like Fable II(kill a rabbit) and Black Flag(kill an Orca). This game I can just avoid those quests since some of the materials you get out of it can just be had from rewards.

Also, traveling is perfectly fine in this. I've had zero issues with my horse, so I don't know what Jim's big problem with it is. Using auto-run is just stupid on principle because it takes forever anyway. and fast travel is as convenient and optional as it should be, so whatever. Again, I think most are just mindless haters are just full of sh*t on this game.

Anyways, all-in-all: The game is a mess but I'm still having a lot of fun. I'd say it's way better than DW8, which I thought was just extremely boring and barebones as all hell. Going from here I definitely want the old combat back in DW10 and for the love of god they better give people their weapons back. Whether it should stay open world or not? I'm not sure. I think I'd like them to just refine the old formula and focus more on an engine that can finally realize some of the previous games' ambitions of scale. I think DW10 should be a return to form. I'm enjoying this game but I enjoyed past entries a lot more... except for DW6 and 8. DW3-5 were better and DW7 is still the best one yet. DW2, meh, good start I guess.

Most of this was spurred by Jim's videos but I've also seen a few other people jumping on the hate train and just sh*t on the graphics without having played it or anything, like, okay, just stop. I usually agree with Jim, including on most DW stuff but this time I was actually getting pissed off. He really seemed to just be talking out his ass about some of the problems he brought up like the combat and open world is "empty"(bull-f***ing-sh*t, there's a load to do, it's actually kind of obnoxious at times.

Dynasty Warriors 9 is a Hack 'n' Slash game (Musou) in the third person view with small Stealth elements and the overall goal of the game is to enter enemy bases, knock down a huge amount of opponents and knock down the enemy boss. For the first time in the series Dynasty Warriors, we have an open world format game, and that is the map of China. The user can walk freely, on horseback or by canoe, as well as buy, sell and craft certain things. The Day-Night cycle and rain are also present in this game.

As in previous Dynasty Warriors, the story of Dynasty Warriors 9 follows the Chinese novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms". This same story is told through the 94 playable characters in the game who come from the four biggest clans: Wei, Wu, Shu and Jin, so it will take some time to realize what really goes on during the game. Initially we can only choose one of the three officers from the Wei, Wu and Shu clans: Cao Cao (Wei), Sun Jian (Wu) and Liu Bei (Shu). The story can be enjoyable because of the interweaving of the characters.

Well, as I mentioned earlier, most main missions and side missions aim to break into enemy bases, knock down huge numbers of enemies and defeat the enemy boss. Sometimes we have to invade certain territories before we go to the final territory, so that our comrades can go to the front line, to demoralize the enemies, etc. The action is frantic and it's funny to feel like we're a god because we're defeating over a thousand soldiers. However, the game loses immense quality because we are repeating the same type of mission, now imagine that with 94 characters. Yes, we can perfectly turn the game without crafting, with the exception of healing items. I sense that this Dynasty Warriors 9 could have perfectly an online co-operative mode in the style of the Far Cry series. Dynasty Warriors 9 has a good range of weapons from blades, spears, bows, among others, which slightly alleviates repetitive missions and the fact that the fighting is little deep due to the lack of slight variation.

The map is fantastically vast, with lots of gorgeous natural sites to explore and places to conquer and visit. Graphically speaking, the characters are well designed and treated, despite the game having a few houses with few details and still have some graphic issues in most places even after the 1.03 update. The soundtrack, the voices of the actors (Chinese) and the sound effects perfectly fit the Chinese environment of the game.

Also note that the player can hunt animals and fish, which can later be used in the Teahouse to temporarily increase our attack, defense and other statistics. When upgrading points, which can be earned through unusual enemies, the player can use them for Health Bar, Musou (special technique), Stamina, Attack, Defense, Power, Toughness, Speed and Bow Skill.

It is also possible to make Reforge the weapons either in the Trigger Attack (Launch, Stun and Knock-Down) or Reactive Attack (Counter, Guard Break and Assault), which can be embedded with Gems obtained, such as Colt Gem that temporarily gives + 1% damage when standing on the horse and gives 3 more Attack Speed.

Overall, Dynasty Warriors 9 is not a bad game, but was hampered by the enormous repeatability of the missions and technical errors. Maybe, who knows, if in the next Dynasty Warriors, the Omega Force will do better the homework, but it will be very difficult to believe.

Verdict: If you have Chinese patience and if you don't care about the mistakes, Dynasty Warriors 9 can be a good game.

    - There was no improvement in graphics from DW8, in fact the game looked worse at times
    - The frame rate makes the movement look clunky
    - The open world system immediately adds hours of very repetitive, boring missions
    - Even with the fast travel system, it take a while to get anywhere and your horse runs into walls constantly with the auto-run feature
    - Every mission boils down to "go here, kill this guy, leave" with little variety
    - The english voice acting is terrible; they made my favorite character (Xiahou Dun) sound like a teenager
    - The combat system felt even more repetitive as I found myself using the R1 attacks over and over until the enemy dies. Also they took away charge attacks which were the game's bread and butter
    - Hunting and fishing aren't fun, although I am hopeful for future implementations of them
    - The crafting system is cool and interesting, but the game can be beaten easily without it so it makes this feature seem unavailing
    - The story telling took a new approach, which is fine, but it is very time consuming and the enthusiasm seemed very low to the point where I found myself skipping dialogue after just an hiour of playing

Overall, the game took a giant leap, but in the process created many new problems and ultimately removed what made the series fun in the first place. I hope that DW10 addresses some of these issues, but for now I would not recommend playing this game.

In theory a lot has changed in the latest Dynasty Warriors (open world being the most notable addition) but in reality it’s the same game. It can be really enjoyable and at times impressive in terms of scale, but I got bored with it quite quickly. [04/2018, p.72]

It’s such a shame to see the state of this franchise in 2018. Dynasty Warriors deserved better than this, and I hope Omega Force gets another shot to do this franchise justice, because this is not how the tales of the Three Kingdoms should end.
