Is it perfect? Of course not, what game is? However, they made a new game series from scratch and made some much needed changes to the DB formula. Visually the game is the best it's ever looked. As a big DBZ fan I can say that the games haven't always looked the best, but this one looks the most like the series. The animations are awesome as well. Normally the games have had a creepy puppet mouth thing going with every word being mouthed with a "Ma ma ma." motion. They actually animated the vowels out this time which is welcome.

The story, while pretty much the same, has been spiced up as well. Now you get to have your story be told as the new recruit to the Time Patrol who Trunk s brings in to right changes in the DBZ timeline. You meet new characters and villains who's stories you're curious to find out more about (especially since they don't go too far into them). The combat is fun and hectic at times. It takes some getting used to, especially if your muscle memory wants you to pull off some Budakai Tenkaichi moves. The game would benefit from a practice option which, unfortunately, isn't there. You have to learn as you go in this one. You will get plenty of practice though. With the main story missions, Parallel Missions, multiple Mentor missions, and online play you will get better at the make-your-own combo system in no time.

Speaking of Online...it sucks. The servers are in some serious need of TLC. I was able to get online for about 2-3 hours this past weekend and then was booted and never able to get back on. It even gave me trouble when I wanted to play offline. I had to turn off my PS4 internet connection to continue playing offline. Something some may find to be an issue is the roster. Key characters and scenes in the story are missing. (Minor spoiler ahead) Towa happens to be Demon King Daburas sister but he isn't even in the game. They have the Majin Buu saga but no Majin Vegeta to be found...you know...the only other time Goku and Vegeta fight. The main cause for the release of Majin Buu and how Vegeta dies. Kinda important that fight. So yes, some may find those characters absence to be an issue. I haven't really been effected by it outside of missing cool fights in the story because I only play my created character. Which is awesome!

They did a pretty good job with making a decent character customization for this game (much better than Ultimate Tenkaichi). With a little imagination you can make a wide range of characters. Also the races given have different stats that make you think how you want your character to play. One thing I don't like is the fact that your clothes give both stat buffs and defects to your character. You will be forced to either have a cool looking character that may not have the stats you want or an all powerful character that looks like an idiot....or you just wear the Goku gi like so many online. All in all though, I would say this is definitely a step forward in the DBZ game saga. After the last three games it was looking rough. Is this the best most complete DBZ games to ever exist. Probably not, but it is one of the most fun. This is a definite buy for any DBZ fan!

I have played nearly every DB game in existence including the horrible UB22, and I will tell you that Xenoverse is the 1st time since Legends I felt like I was playing the beloved anime. The traditional "Tenkichi" gameplay has been revamped, and modernized to allow for ease of movement and simplicity in control. The game is more about good teamwork (yes teamwork in a DBZ game) than it is just solely overpowering your opponents.

This holds true especially later on when fights get increasingly more difficult and require a serious combination of reflexes and teamwork. Tokitoki City while very basic is a nice hub for all of the games activities. Making your own DBZ character is actually surprisingly more indepth than I thought. Having my bald and bearded Saiyan power up to SS and have his facial hair turn yellow was a hoot :D

I will spare the details and tell you that if you really want a good DBZ experience then this is the game for you. To be frank this is game is not perfect as a video game, but this is a game for fans of Dragonball, simple as that.

Everything is effectively perfect, from the deep, satisfying combat system, the detailed character creation suite, solid voice acting and it oozes character throughout. Strangely enough, the only negative I can really give it is the graphics - obviously it's cel-shaded and it should be, but it looks a bit rough round the edges at times and can glitch out a bit on rare occasions, but it still gets the job done.

The best Dragon Ball game since... no, actually, it's simply the best Dragon Ball game. Pick it up if you're a fan of the series, but to be completely honest I'd recommend picking it up if you're a fan of fighting games generally.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Update: The game turns out to be very unbanlaced and unfair in the story mode and some PQ. If you don't choose the saiyan race, you'll be having a lot of trouble to beat the game at some parts. Especially in a battle against Beerus and whis and another one that is 95% impossible that you have to babysit Bardock in its saga. The game is clearly still on alpha.
That's all I wanted to say. Now have fun raging through this frustrating game.

Do you know the feeling of receiving a toy you wanted as a kid, only to find out it was a cheap replica? That feeling of both betrayal and disappointment? Xenoverse is that for me.

Graphics: poor, even for cell shaded. There are fighting games which do the drawn style of 3D infinitely better. Plot: The great setup of "joining" the dragon ball plot as an external character is wasted.

Plot: The great setup of "joining" the dragon ball plot as an external character is wasted. You continuously fight pointless quests and battles, with a pathetic scriptwriting and direction for the main story battles and events. How can you feel involved in a story when you constantly go off to fight quests for money, in which you join random DB characters (good and evil)?

Gameplay: I find it better than the Budokai Tenkaichi games, but it oscillates between extremely easy and frustratingly hard for apparently no reason. Too much depends on camera controls, locking on and dodging finishers. I feel even the PS1 fighting games had better mechanics for that.

Conclusion: Mediocre and unpolished. Clearly yet another cash grab on the backs of fans and nostalgia. Any of the old Budokai Tenkaichi games is worth your money more than this.

I would rate this game much higher if not for some of the shenanigans the game will pull in order to "increase difficulty".

The enemy AI is not held to the same rules as you. You need to be facing your opponent for your block to work. They do not. If you are being hit there isn't anything you can do except use your vanish if you have enough stamina or use your ultimate evasive move. If you have enough ki and if it will even let you (often times it will not despite telling you in the tutorial that you can use them while being hit since that's the entire point of them). The enemy AI, on the other hand, can not only start attacking you in the middle of your combo but they'll also be blocking your combo then start hitting you back while you're still in the middle of hitting them. You cannot do this.

The worst part is that when an enemy is lying down none of your attacks will affect them. That's right. What could have been an epic moment of blasting Vegeta into the ground with a kamehameha suddenly turns into a giant waste of ki as they lie on the ground with your blast hitting them dead on but not taking any damage due to being invincible.

Because of this above reason your Ultimates are pretty much a waste. The only time to use them would be while your opponent is immobile correct? Especially since the wind up for them is so long and telegraphed that 9 times out of 10 the AI will just side step your attack. Too bad they're invincible while knocked down. Who thought making knocked down enemies invincible in the AI battles was a good idea clearly didn't have their head on straight. In VS it makes sense. Not so much in story.

The upsides to the game are that you can create your own character. There's some comedy with this though. Even though you can make a human, Saiyan, Namekian, or Buu the back of the game's box says "CREATE YOUR OWN SAIYAN AND RESTORE DRAGON BALL HISTORY". It's like the people doing the box art had no idea you could create a non-Saiyan. Or the game was originally only supposed to allow you to create a Saiyan.

The story is decent. You're pretty much reliving the events of the Dragon Ball Z series but you get to be a part of them. Oh and some extra story involving the people responsible for changing the history you're trying to set right.

The music is classic DBZ as in corny as all hell but if you're a fan of DBZ you know what you're getting into.

Two days after US release and the servers are still unstable. Even though there's offline play if the servers are down you'll be kicked from your single player lobby and back to the title screen after every mission.

You can customize the colour of your gear. Your starting gear. I have yet to see another piece of gear you could customize the colour of as all of it is iconic DBZ character gear and will come in specific colours. Makes me wonder why there's a colour customization option to begin with.

Misc. side note. If you create a Saiyan you don't have a tail. Unless you equip gear that has a tail, for example Vegeta's battle suit you can get early in the game. There is absolutely zero explanation for this. Not taking off points for this but it does taking me out of the experience a little.

To sum up, if you like DBZ and are looking for a decent fighting game/RPG hybrid based on DBZ you should give this a try. But only if you're willing to play a game that will cheat in order to increase difficulty because the developers couldn't seem to figure out a way to make it happen any other way.

for nonDBZ fans: a phenominal 3 dimensional fighting game that is underrated because it's DBZ

The pros to this game is the fighting. This game captures what DBZ has shown in a way that is easily understandable. Evenly matched combatants will be an adrenaline pumping fight that will end in what can only be described as clutch moments. Those who are more powerful than the rest can be in 1v5 matches with little to no problems. While this may sound like a turnoff i assure you it is anything but. This game captures the feelings of your abilities very well. How strong your character is can be felt throughout the game, and even fights you have no hope of winning allow any person to go down swinging. The customization of the Created character is in between weak and strong. The character creation itself is rather lacking, however the creation of playstyle is where the customization shines.

The cons include the story, which is not that bad, though is the weakest point of the game. The story of the game is rather simple; the timeline of DBZ has been distorted and is causing the universe to change. People win fights when they shouldnt have and fights are altered from the historical path. In response it is your created player's job to join the DBZ cast in order to correct these mistakes and set the timeline back in order. While the idea is strong, and the fights are amazing, the story is the weakest point of this strongest game.

Coop is fairly limited as well. You can do parrallel missions, which are basic challenges with twists in each one, and battles, either 1v1 or 3v3, thats it.

-The combat system is the great aspect of this game. Is much simpler than other DB games (which makes the game playable not only to DB fans), and at the same time is the more complex and customizable of all. I really enjoy taking my time planning ahead for every battle.
-Creating your own character and getting him into the DB World is a great sensation, i must say that all the things you have to do, take your character one step further into this world.
-The PvP/Coop (which is all the game, except for the story) is great, and i expected no less, since this game is made for that.iando movimientos: Cuadrado golpes blandos y Triangulo golpes fuertes, Circulo **** comunes. Esos son los ataques basicos de cualquier PJ, bastante simple y muy accesible para todos ya sean nuevos o viejos en la saga DB.

    Cons:
-The camera in closed maps (freeza ship for example) is annoying.
-Not much graphic improvement (but i really don't expected too much).
-Allie IA is kinda stupid sometimes (that's why i play only coop with other people).

    On a last note:

The game is pretty nice and complete (and will be further complete with DLCs), you have plenty of staff to do, alone or in coop. Having the ability to create your own custom character and put it in the DB world with such immersive mechanics (mentors, looking for DB balls, unlock different cloths, pretty much everything) is what makes this game so aweseome, The new villans and twist in the history is welcomed.

So if you are a DB Fan, or if you are new to this world, i would not recommend another DB game beside this one.

If you've ever been a fan of the series, do yourself a favour and pick up this game. One of the best DBZ video games to come out in years, and an overall fantastic fighting game.

Character creation and online capabilities are great. The customization of both your appearance and your skill set is vast and allows for everyone to create a totally unique character of their liking. The story is completely original, but also involves key moments in the Dragon Ball series. Putting yourself into the series' most iconic moments is absolutely entertaining, and a childhood dream of mine 10 year old me is going crazy.

The mechanics stay true to the well-received Tenkaichi series, while borrowing from predecessors that have come in the last generation iterations of the game. Combos and supers can be chained to do satisfying and deadly attacks.

The cons I have for the game would probably be that the game doesn't allow for local multiplayer on multiple stages, and rather just the tournament stage (I could be wrong and just haven't unlocked the capability yet). The stages also could use a few more destructible landmarks, which would add to the immersion.

Other than that, as a longtime DBZ fan, I am absolutely thrilled with this game. If you're a fan of the Dragon Ball series, and you've skipped out on the gaming adaptations of DBZ since the Tenkaichi series on PS2 like I did, I highly recommend jumping back in with this game. It's the freshest and most improved adaptation of the series, and I cannot recommend it more, for fans and fighting game enthusiasts alike.

    Rock the dragon.

Dimps has done it again, give credit where credit is due. This truly is a fantastic game and I love everything about it.

Feels like it's been forever since I've played a good dragonballz game, but I guess all bad things come to an end (yes I just made that saying up). There is even GT content in this game, and I loved GT, so I'm glad we have the likes of Super Saiyan 4 Goku, Super

While it’s not really much of a looker, and non-fans won’t find much here besides a series of fights, there’s a ton in here for fans of the series to dig into and enjoy.

A lot of fussy distraction from the one-note combat. [Apr 2015, p.94]
