Way too much of the game is DLC ( Developer Locked Content ) then in the 2nd update they jump the difficulty up by at least 5 ! Now it's to hard for my kids even I can't play it and they have no difficulty setting to turn it down . Can't be-leave this ! What a waste of money !

Pretty good DB game! Very open space when in combat and the fact you can fly wherever you want while fighting is a plus for me! Story kept me intrigued but unfortunately once you finish that it becomes a repetitive optional/side missions to get your level and skills up. Though this is a pretty good DB game and I would recommend this to any DB fans out there!

The RPG aspect of the game is also poorly utilized with it being more nuance more than anything, which is disappointing considering the potential an RPG Dragon Ball game could have, but it mostly feels tacked on. The character creation I thought was pretty neat, I also like the inclusion of items such as the bansho fan and other items as accessories... Overall I wouldn't spend more than $10 and even that is pushing it, considering their is DLC you would also have to purchase for GT character and a few more recent characters. Expand

If you just start on story you will have to fight OP enemies
    The combos are pretty flaky
    Forget about good AI partners
And finally there is no such thing as in 'teamwork'
I would recommend waiting for the price drop and only get this if your a dbz lover like me

    I am a semi-Dragon Ball fan.
In general Xenoverse is cheaply made, but fun enough. A 7.5 in my books.
The campaign is linear, there is a fair bit of farming that needs to be done. The quests are all … well.. redundant. Beat group of enemies/bosses within 15minutes in one of 7 or so commonly recurring environments. It doesn’t require a lot of skill to win… if stuck farm the highest xp

No longer do you have to run around the house yelling out moves and nearly **** yourself trying to turn super saiyan. Now with the new and improved character creation, you can fight alongside and at times against your favorite Z/GT characters. One of the only flaws would be that sometimes fighting sequences take too long before saving checkpoints which results in you having to re-fight through the same 5, 10 and sometimes longer fight sequences if you fail. Another thing is that the multiplayer aspect of the game feels a bit hollow and could really use some TLC. These are flaws that are merely a scratch on the surface of Namek though, and will not take too much away from what is really a great game. Overall this game has taken everything the its previous games have done right, FUSED them together and injected steroids. Expand

    WARNING: RANT AHEAD

Few games have ever caused me this much rage and frustration, and at the same time, almost no other game in my library comes close to the amount of satisfaction and sheer fun I have when playing this game. The story, character creation, and gameplay (most aspects of these at least), are the positives of this game. However, online, while extremely fun and competetive when playing with good players, is a complete hell hole other times. Hit detection is laughably awful, and certain things called Z-souls combined with the right character build can lead to a completely broken and nigh-unbeatable opponent, which is only made worse when you realize they have very little actual skill. To be blunt, online play can range from fantastic to horrible, and is always being brought down by spammers (I'm not talking about Super Saiyan spammers either, I'm talking male earthling with 100 in strike supers, and the Z-soul that lets him start out with full ki and spam evil rise strike, a completely broken move that you need near-superhuman reflexes to evade, every time I try to get close; and get this: he kills me in 3-4 hits).

The story however, is where the game shines. While many aspects of both the story and character creation were taken from Dragon Ball Online, is very original and interesting. The character creator is just varied enough to feel like you've made your very own unique character every time you first bring them into the game. But even then, I still feel as if more options for hairstyles and clothing would be very welcome. I'd rather not go into plot details, because if you're a fan of the anime or manga, you'll want to experience all of it for yourself.

Now, on to the game's balance issues. There is a total of 8 different possible races/genders available (male saiyan, female saiyan, male earthling, female earthling, male majin, female majin, namekian, and frieza race) each with their own pros and cons. However, the differences are just too prominent. Saiyans are complete glass cannons, making them very inneffective for tank builds, majins make good tanks, but they lack offensive power and have slow stamina recovery, earthlings have good stats across the board, leaving them to be almost the only race you see being used by competetive players, and namekians make alright tanks, but with less health and offensive power than majins, they are likely the least used race, despite having very fast stamina recovery (and keep in mind stamina is extremely important in this game; if you have stamina, you can stay alive, if you're out of stamina, you're thoroughly screwed), and frieza race characters neither have good offense nor defense, but supposedly make up for it with... movement speed? (Yeah, doesn't make much sense, but hey, they have this paralyzing ki blast thing that is almost useless against skilled players, so...) These differences are very large, too. A male saiyan, even if he has 100 in ki blast supers with clothes and a z-soul that boosts ki blasts, will still do mediocre damage compared to a female earthling with even a slightly high ki blast super stat. However, despite how big and limiting these differences can be, they can be overcome as long as the player has skill. Another terrible thing though, is that the Super Saiyan forms were handled horribly. The most powerful forms only have a 5% attack power boost. They also drain your ki very fast, and you have almost no way of recovering it unless you have a ki charging move equipped, which only leaves you open to attack. It also gives you unlimited use of your ki while it is draining, which only leads to one thing: spammers. These guys used to be problems, but any competent player can easily dispose of them. They never seem to learn either, as I still encounter plenty of spammers in online play.

Now that I'm through ranting about this games shortcomings, here's my verdict. I love this game. Any fan of the franchise should definitely give the game a try. However, those that do buy the game should be aware of the mind-bogglingly awful balancing issues and other various things that plague the game's online, which, even with all of the problems, can be a blast to play. Despite all of the game's negatives, I still give the game a strong 8/10, and I honestly can't wait for the sequel.

Firstly, the sound or lack thereof. I was constantly checking my headset to see if it was flat or disconnected because in game if you’re not fighting it’s dead silent, no background music, nothing. The sound to picture is so disjointed that when a character speaks their lips are out of sync or they just don’t move at all. I found this would happen frequently throughout the game especially in the cut scenes. Secondly, online play is finicky at best. DBX gives players the option of selecting Single or Multi Lobby play at the home screen but all too often the servers are unavailable for reasons ranging from too many players on the server to the Multi Lobby hamster needing to take a break from his server-powering hamster wheel. Do be aware that if playing Parallel Quests with friends, if you have not personally finished the Quest only the party leader will be given a ranking and ultimately have it chalked up as complete.

Overall XenoVerse is one of the most enjoyable games I have played on this generation of consoles (in saiyin that I’m a jungle iz massive DBZ fanboy so this review is a work of pure, biased junk). Whether you are playing solo or online with your friends it is downright fun and very addictive. I normally hate them but the included cut scenes are a journey back into the show we all know and love, and I think that’s tops. Dimps has done a great job with this title and with ongoing updates to improve gameplay, sound and potentially adding further skills and equipment I can see myself playing DBX until they release the inevitable sequel.

This is a really great game, very fun to play by yourself and especially fantastic with friends. Solid game-play, good and original story, good controls, and good online community.

Both PvE and PvP. The servers has serious lag issues, I often find myself hitting right through an enemy even though I am right up his face, and then i only manage to get very few hits in. But the enemy still hits me all the time, so I end up feeling frustrated and useless to my team. Even in 1 on 1, this happens every single time. I don't know, if it's just the fact that everyone who plays Dragon Ball has bad internet connection, but most of them I've ever played with have maybe only 1 bar on their net. That's the main issue with worldwide servers. Secondly I think the auto-lock system is really poorly made. Whenever I focus on an enemy in front of me, if another one get's behind me and starts hitting me, I loose more health than i should've simply because I have to switch focus to be able to dodge. And when there's three enemies all out to get YOU because the AI sucks (I'll get back to that), the HUD somehow mixes everything up and can't sometimes shift focus on the ONE enemy that you have to dodge. Same goes with great apes. Sometimes it's impossible to switch to it's tail, when you really need to, unless you get into the right position which is BS! And finally, there's too few characters and too little to do in the end, to give you some more diversity. The randomness of drops was OK in the beginning, to keep you playing just to unlock that one skill or equipment that you need for your character, but sometimes it get's too much. There's one PQ I've played like literally 100 times and i keep getting everything other than the Z-Soul i am after! It quickly get's frustrating, when it seems like the drop rates aren't so random after all. Same thing with Dragon Balls. This is supposed to be an open world RPG too, but the world isn't really that open. It isn't like it was in Budokai 3 for example. I kinda expected it to be like that. This is more like the Budokai Tenkaichi games, with SOME Budokai 3, like the lvl system with attribute points. I loved those games when I was a kid, and even though I haven't played any DBZ game since, I can tell, that I haven't missed out on much. This game has so much potential and it's just squandered away like this is some kind of Beta version or demo, because of Dimps' tiresome policy of making 1 new DBZ game in a new "series" of DBZ games. Y'know like Budokai 1 only had content until the Cell Saga, but then B2 had all the story, and then B3 had a little GT and Z movies and even Kid Goku from DB. Same thing with Budokai Tenkaichi series. We always got a "taste" in the first game in that line of new games, then we got a little more from the 2nd and then the 3rd was pure awesomeness. I can tell just by looking at the later released DBZ games that it's still the kind of strategy they're running with here. And it's so sad, that instead of adding MORE content on later games, to the content we already had, they take content away, like characters, quests, more DBZ content ie. from the movies, GT and regular Dragon Ball, just to tease us and continue to make half-baked games in order to grab quick cash and keep the fans by their throats. It's shameless. But that being said, I dig that you can finally get to make your own character from different races, complete with customizing equipment, clothes and even abilities! And to interact with fellow Dragon Ball fans in the Multiplayer Lobby is cool too. Although it's a little irritating when the server suddenly kicks you off after some time. But i must point out, I HATE the fact that a Saiyan doesn't have a tail by default. Even if they're not full blooded, they always have tails. At least have the option to include it on, even if it was just an "accessory". I think it's shameless that you can get Saiyan armor that have the tails wrapped around on ALL races. So for example, Majins and Frieza Races can have Saiyan tails!!! Like WTF DIMPS!!! I'm also disappointed in the transformations. Saiyans only have to SSJ2 and they're not permanent in a fight like in the Budokai and Tenkaichi series. They're supposed to boost your attributes but they really don't, so again it's inexusable. They were too lazy to include new hair designs into them and you don't get SSJ3. Just your hair color change and aura... The Frieza race should've had transformations too, even the Namekians, like a boosting ts, because a regular Namek and a super Namek are similar in appearance. The many abilities and the "new" story line, even the PQ's make up for most of the flaws, but this is a game for the fans only. This is not a game for gamers. And to get the most out of your Dragon Ball experience, i highly recommend you to get the season pass in order to get the full enjoyment. Oh and btw i miss beam struggle, why they gotta take that away!? Shame on you Dimps, shame! Please do a much better job for the sequel!!! I wanted to say some more, but I'm out of characters so. The combat I suppose is the best part about it, it's pretty solid as far as combat goes and with all the possible customizable options ranging from equipment to races all with a myriad of different skills from the Dragonball Z universe it's not hard to see why this wasn't enticing at first. However the game gets stale real fast, even playing online parallel quests with your friends gets immensely tedious after a while. Upon completing all the parallel quests that would be most people done with the game, yet the game literally leaches onto you like a parasite refusing to let you go, for if you want to obtain every skill, because the skills are cool and what is your amazing custom character if it doesn't have Super Saiyan 2 or Kamehameha, this game has a ridiculous RNG system in place to ensure that it will take you the absolute maximum amount of time to get them all. Hell any ONE skill or piece of equipment you might want, forget about it, because you'll be looking to play the same quests over and over with no way of knowing if you'll get the stupid thing or not because it's completely random and it's not like the developers gave you anything like a Z-soul to make your chances even remotely greater. It doesn't end there either; for every quest there is are hidden criteria to get an 'Ultimate Finish', which is like an extra end after the point where the level should have finish...except it's not because, forget the criteria that noise is also locked behind an RNG wall, along with many precious skills as well. It's clear that is never going to get patched, despite the fact that everyone with half a brain can see how much of a moron you'd have to be to even consider implementing something so stupid. Honestly that may sound like a rant, but that is me summing up the bulk of that game, there is really nothing else to discuss; The supposed 'new' story is just the same story with slight alterations that your custom character has to put back to normal. Anyone who has played the 'What If' scenarios of the Budokai games will be left thoroughly disappointed as any one of their What If scenario's was significantly cooler than the entirety of DBX's story. The graphics are fine...I'm not a graphics expert, if it looks fine, that's good enough for me. aside from the Online Parallel Quests there's also online tournaments, they're pretty much there because some people would moan if they weren't, as seen by the ranking system whereby 90% of people are displayed Rank F. Unsurprising seeing as the game is so unbalanced there are so many saiyan characters entering and spamming ultimate moves the whole online vs ceases to be fun almost immediately.

In short I gave the game a 5 because at one point I kind of liked it. Now though, I am so tired of it that if it were a person I would hunt it down and stab it to death.

THE ZSOULS that made matches like that possibel were MIGHT AS WELL.. and YOU WILL NEVER BEAT AN ANDROID. It is a debauchery to believe that this patch affected those zsouls because the original afffect was suffice and the best way to counter against every player that just sits there and spammmm WAVES over and over again... that makes this game cheap. I don't recall an epsiode of a show were the protagonist sat back and just fired waves to beat the antagonist the whole time of the fight. Because now that that zsoul has been affected. Every rank match and tournament match will be KI BLAST battles. Fighting in one match will just end in 30-50 seconds forcing players to use regen just to stay alive, because the point of their time in battle is to learn how to fight in battle but now that they can no longer stay alive along enough in battle based on stanima it will out weigh and devalue the value of this game.. How this game has been devalued because what made this game playable was the chance to over come those ki blast spammers who are abusing the challenge of how great this game had become.. I had no other complaint to the changes made to anything else I was fine... but seeing as how these two ZSOULS Might as well and YOU will never beat an Android have become worthless this game is no longer as valued as before. of course I will play but not the level I had acquired with interest. It would be wondeful if the createors and software programs would go back and reverse the effects that had constructed on those two zsouls THE ZSOULS that made matches possibel MIGHT AS WELL.. and YOU WILL NEVER BEAT AN ANDROIDto the way they had worked., BECAUSE those zsouls were a safe guard to those who played with a namekian and a freeza and a majin girl.. now that these zsouls are gone people are going to abuse the game by becoming ki blast fighters... and everyone who will learn how to play will choose human in pvp matches just to survive matches so the game now loses diversity and melee usagaes. Now I have pretty big idea why those two zsouls were afftected because you have players in japan complaining that they are ki blast fighters and all they want to do is blast at their oppoeonts over and over again. My resposne to that is not dragonball z.. I grew up watching it as they fight to the death... spamnmming waves over and over again is not dragonball z.. It angers and rages me that this patch affected the skill behind teaching players how to survive matches long enough to undertstand how to play. Real players do not abuse the use of phantom fist... It angers me that I too if i want to continug playing I will have to adapt to using phantom fist a weak skill just to surive those matches when you are the last man standing in these matches. honestly it took somone randomly showing the effort that they care enough to express their own opionion creditable or not just to explain the effects this game will undergo because of how these two zsouls were afffected GREATLY... who knows whether you care or not. At least you know somone took the effort to express what has happened to this game and now how devauled it has become to me.. because I peronally enjoyed the game to the point of wanting to buy a share and now I refuse.. because of how the creators have weakened it's stature. It no longer balanced and in time within 1 month you will greatly see a decrease of players no longer playing this game.. So i ask you if you do not want that to happen please at least reverse the effects of these two ZSOULS back to it orignal status MIGHT AS WELL.. and YOU WILL NEVER BEAT AN ANDROID.. Honestly there is a great amount of melee fighters who have learned to become hybrid fighters in this game and what made it possible was these two zsouls. now that they have been greatly affected a balance like that is no longer possible and it will greatly destroy the continuation of this game based on the creditablilty you have now givene to all spammers of this game. So please please i beg of you I made an account just to be heard tor few minutes in hope to believe that you would go and see just how the effects of htis game have altered now based on those two zsouls. It took 2 days back to back hour for me to have all my characters just to have those zsouls and im sure everyone who go those zsouls grimed really hard to get them. To now see them being used this way has weakened every playerd who is a hyrbid fighter and you have forced us to become weak and rely on phantom fist which will give ki blast fighters the au Expand

The ability to create your own character and build them in a RPG fashion is the main draw of this game, and it repeatedly rewards you as the game progresses. You can choose from Saiyan, Earthling, Namekian, Majin, or Frieza Clan. Xenoverse provides general moves and equipment but also offers specific sets of moves and equipment for each race. This makes playing each race unique.

Campaign: The first 5 hours of the game are perfectly balanced as your character levels up at the same rate as the story progresses. Xenoverse follows the storyline with Vegeta, Ginyu Force, Frieza, Cell, Majin Buu, and more. Opponents are challenging and its very fun as you gain the most XP doing the campaign missions. When you get to the 5-20 hour mark, Frieza and Cell come into play and you will be required to do side missions to level up your character. Side missions offer material rewards, armor, and new moves. It's fun getting through the side missions as they offer more story context and allow you to visually see your created character in more action. Once at the 20 hour mark, the game becomes a grindfest. You will have to repeatedly do side missions in order to level up your character enough to progress the story.

Combat: Combat is pretty simple. Mash two buttons and hope for the best, block, repeat. Aquire enough ki and then start doing combinations of button mashing and super ki blasts. If you hit the right sequence of buttons, you can pull off a sweet attack that involves powerful punches that launch the opponent a far distance that follow up with teleport strikes that we are familiar with in the shows. It's not very clear how to do them, I typically just press one button 5 or 6 times then switch it to the other strike button.

Side Missions: More time will be spent doing side missions than anything else. They offer a base set of currency and based on your performance, it can increase. They also offer moves and new equipment, however the biggest problem is there aren't any conditions known to the player to acquire moves or equipment. Before a side mission starts, there are a list of things the player can obtain by completing the mission. I recall doing a mission 6 times trying to get Frieza's Death Slash. I figured I had to grind to progress anyways, and I really wanted that move. I still don't know what I did to obtain it, but I felt more happy my frustration ended rather than happy I did something to earn the move. This gets ever more frustrating when there are moves you feel are necessary to obtain in order to progress in the story. For example Super Saiyan 2 power up is acquired via side mission. It's very powerful and I tried over and over again to get it. I ended up having to purchase it for 50,000 zen. This is long after I had grinded to progress the story and it was available in the shop.

    Art

The art style is true to the Dragon Ball Z universe and looks absolutely fantastic. I played on a PS4 and the cell shaded characters make repetitive gameplay worthwhile. There is so much attention to detail. From the particle trails when traveling at supersonic speeds, super blasts, vanishing during combat, unique combat animations, and unique combo styles per each race, the art keeps your attention as you appreciate the amount of work that was done. Character creation allows for color selection for every single piece of clothing equipped which allows for endless amounts of customization.

Cinematics: The story comes with its own animated show integrated into the game. There is a mix of in engine cut scenes and full Dragon Ball Z episode type of animations to progress the story. As a Dragon Ball Z fan, its refreshing to see new episodes in a world I exist in. They are just long enough for you to feel satisfied and get back into battle, which is great because sometimes when games spend a lot of time on the story, the cinematics are too long and get annoying. The in engine cut scenes don't contain any dramatics with avatar animations, but it's really not needed. They are dialogue sessions and do its purpose.

Environment: The whole experience is encompassing. The world itself looks identical to the TV show. Couple that with the authentic audio, crazy particles, unique animations for super moves, and the small cut scenes for perfectly timed combos, immersion sets in quickly. There are also dragon balls that exist in the world, although I'm not exactly sure how to obtain them all. It seems to be random or when I do a great feat in side quests.

This game is very enjoyable. There is certainly a lot of areas this game needs to improve on, but at the same time there are plenty of elements that work.

    What needs work:
Combo System - The problem I have with this, is that if you're taking the biggest beating in a combo, there is nothing you can really do except wait until they finish or use stamina to break out if you have enough to do so.
It would have been great if you could attack them while they were on the floor with a well placed kamehameha for example, but perhaps that wasn't implemented due to balancing reasons.

Character Balance - I always find myself either going Goku, Gohan, Frieza or Perfect Cell. It's as if all of the other characters are redundant. There is no drive to go another character. Being able to upgrade them to be an insane fighter would be brilliant.
Also the fact that it allows you to assemble 3 of the same character in your team is lazy.
Having trouble with a quest? 3 Full Powered Perfect Cell's it is.

Free Roam - TokiToki City seems very boring. It needs more interaction and faster pace while exploring. Preferably a flying mechanic

Stats Comparison - I've found it very frustrating trying to compare stats on my equipment. There is no comparison saying what attributes are better or worse compared to what you have on. It only specifies for the item itself.

    What works:
Combat System - I've never felt more satisfied killing Frieza and beating the cockiness out of Vegeta. The combat system is bursting with adrenaline and will get you hooked into fighting different characters. If all your life you have wanted a proper shot at killing your most hated villain, then this is it.

Customization - A wide range of gear featuring clothing from many characters in the DBZ history. It looks very fresh being allowing you to freely switch between cosmetics and clothing pieces that suit your play style the best. The developers seemed to have really taken an interest in this and giving us players some variety.

Parallel Quests - The questing is a great way to level up your character and giving that extra push to achieve the ultimate finishes.

Skill Jump - You can't just breeze through the story mode. For example, the level required from the Saiyan Saga to the Ginyu Saga is massive. You will need to train your character up to become on par which requires a combination of purchasing equipment relevant for the fights, qesting and training with your master.

The Music - Amazing for the fights. Always gets you in the mood to smash your opponent. I guess thats just my appreciation for Hard Rock music coming into this ;)

The Story - A biased opinion, but I like it. The idea of your character interacting with the DBZ timeline works. They didn't stretch out the story into something ridiculous, they stayed with the source material. Clean and simple. It also gives you a focused insight on Trunks' purpose with time travel from the anime and in-game.

If you are a DBZ fan, dont look over this. If you can appreciate it for what it is, you will enjoy it. Just expect that it needs more work which hopefully, will come in time.

Gameplay is solid too but people watching makes it better, you can tell who the weirdos or kids are by the looks of their characters or names, and the funny/cool guys as well. Ok lets start off with the good news shall we. The story mode in this version of dragonball is very interesting since two sub main villians are distorting time to alter the past in order to gain enough energy to rule the demon relm but even they are mere pawns in this since there's a much bigger threat looming in the shadows. His name is demegra god of the demon world and he's itching to break free from his 75 million year sentence in the crack of time. Its a moderate challenge since the computer will go from reality show stupid to insane difficulty at the drop of a hat, lord beerus and whis are particuly higher in difficulty! Character creation returns and its loaded with clothes, accessories, skills, capules to purchases so with enough patience, you can create a really good character. The controls takes some getting used too since decending is oddly mapped to L3 but other than that it controls well. The game mechanics are simple but kind of deep if you combine certain special moves, z souls and evasive moves. You also traverse toki toki city which acts as a hub for everything xenoverse has to offer like talking with npc's or playing parallel quests. It has its moments but there really isnt much to do there. The graphics are beautiful to look at and your favorite dragonball sound is there while the music is alright. Well time for the cons! Im not sure if its because i downloaded this from the playstation store but, there's NO PRACTICE MODE! Yeah,i was thrown into combat without practicing. So after i quitthe game to cbeck out the main menu i found another problem with this game, there were only two options on the title screen, "game start" and "options"! To my horror, all modes are in toki toki city, so you have to press "game start", pick your created fighter, choose "single" or "multi lobby", wait for the loading screen to finish THEN you have the pleasure of having to run to offline mode.....thats just plain stupid! Oh and if your playing offline vs, you cant turn off the time limit! You only get three minutes to fight as well, talk about sucking the fun out of fighting. You literally have to end it as quick as possible and that sucks! Ki blast struggles are absent which is confusing since thats a staple of the series so if two fighters fire a kamehameha, one will be negated while the other connects! You can still get tangled up in a fist fight BUT no one wins, you only gain stamina and ki. Speaking of stamina no matter how leved up you are you never really have enough since you can only vanish or use your evasive skill 3 times. I get they didnt want people spaming after image but its frustrating when three people are beating you senseless and there's absolutly nothing you can do besides watching the beating being placed upon you character. Which brings me to the 2 v 2 or 3 v 3 matches, its fun ganging up on someone BUT when its your turn, you might want to have an extra controller ready since you might break one out of frustration. Chaozu, zarbon, dodoria, android 19 and 20, and a few others are gone while freiza's second and third forms along with cell's first and second form and gohan absorbed form are missing as well, funny how all these 9 and 10 score reviews didnt mention these flaws.....oh, and you cant play as goku, vegeta, gohan, cell or freiza in their base form and transform through all there transformations, you can only do it once so if you pick goku third costume you can only go super saiyan or if you pick his last costume, you can ONLY transform to super saiyan. 3. Its silly, which is why im buying raging blast 2. Since you can go through each persons transformation manually at anytime! Oh andyou can no longer slap away kamehameha', big bang attack, special beam cannon, death ball etc, i know, another disappointment. Combos also seem limited as you'll find yourself repeating the same combo over and over again BUT its combo system is better than battle of Z! Your ultimates are pretty useless here since the start up time for them are so long that they can be easily dodged! And the lock on system is hit or miss, also, finding dragonballs or at least all of them seems to be impossible, after two weeks of playing i only have six and thats because namco gave out dragonballs on the 27th of march. Its a moderately fun game thats headed in the right direction, it just needed more time in development but a really good first effort, i just hope the sequel fix these issues. 7 out 10! Expand

As a fan of Dragon Ball Z, I am still longing for a return to some of the greats of past DBZ games and this game comes close but the combat is what was such a disappointment. The blocking and countering is poor and doesn't allow for many interesting battles and you will find your self repeating the same combos that will work or else you will lose because of some questionable fights where enemies will be drained of health only to have a cut scene restore a portion back. it doesn't help that the ultimate moves are very underwhelming as well and do not inspire what the dragon ball series has been known for with great spectacle. The graphics are well done, with cell shaded looks and facial expressions, it captures the mood of the show. Unfortunately the environments aren't destructible in a sense that once you destroy a chunk of earth it will return to form moments later. The best portion of this game has to do with the RPG like elements that were added like the toki-toki hub world and the leveling up system, and customization of equipment and skills that effect your battles. I also enjoyed how they tried to change the story up and make something up instead of rehashing the same battles from the series, but sadly the boring flat combat kept me from finishing a hopeful but overall disappointing game. Perhaps next time. Expand

The story to Xenoverse is interesting with the ability of time travel thrown in it let's them make any fight possible and it makes for some creative alternate universes to battle in. Some story missions will see easy or just right when it comes to difficulty but then around the half way point the game's difficulty spikes extremely hard and forces you to grind levels in side quests until you are hopefully strong enough to stand a chance. This can become extremely frustrating and make the game feel tedious, Side quests do vary in difficulty and opponent so it's not to boring but with the story being the only way to unlock all the characters you are forced to complete it.
Overall if your a fan of the DBZ series or anyone who played the games in the past and are used to the unforgiving fights you will enjoy this game. It's Character creation and over-world is perfect for any DBZ fan.

Here's the thing, if you're looking for a "traditional" (or about as traditional DBZ games get) fighter game, look away. Xenoverse is an action game with some RPG features, and it hardly counts as a "fighter", but that's why I enjoyed it.

    Good:

-Let's be honest, you're looking at this because of the character creator, and it does deliver. It's not the greatest in the world, but there are enough options to make your character feel "special". I felt attached to my little guy, who was voiced by the guys from DBZ abridged (voice 8).

-The story is new and unique and feels like an actual DBZ story, which is good and bad. Still, it kept me invested and I couldn't help but smile when DBZ characters acknowledge your existence as you get ready to fight.

-As far as I know (I haven't played every DBZ game) for the first time EVERY move is different. No more repaints of the kamehameha. From the Galick Gun to the double sunday, each melee and blast attack has different features. You now have a reason to pick and choose your moves besides their names.

Meh (things that could be good or bad depending on who you are)

    - Combat gets throne under the bus quite a bit for this game. Here's the problem. Later missions can get really hard, and it's not a question of being under-leveled. Having a 7 majins fighting you with no allies is straight up difficult because of how the game works, regardless of level. As much as I tried to not fall back on it, I ended up "going SS and throwing unlimited supers at them". But that was only in a pinch, when the missions demanded it. Honestly, I loved throwing myself in the middle of the fray. The combat is fun, and if you can keep your character equal to the enemies, you should be having too much fun to want to just sit back and throw supers.

-The RPG elements are cool, but not as prevalent as you'd think. The bonuses armor give you are virtually unnoticeable. (you can check your stat chart when viewing your presets, and you'll need good eyesight to see any change even when you have a ton of 5x multipliers.). That being said, that means you can wear whatever you want because it really doesn't matter. If cool looking armor has crap stats, oh well, it doesn't make a difference. So that's kinda nice, kinda dumb depending on how you look at it.

That being said, allocating stat points in conjunction with the skills you unlock does matter, and I loved to watch my character go from a in-your-face close range expert to a blast throwing beast (ironically much like the characters in the show throughout the series).

    Bad
    - Just lacks some polish. Spelling errors and small things like having to run back to the PQ hut after every quest can break immersion. You kinda wish everything was a little deeper, but it's a new IP so hey, everything can't be Last of Us.

-DLC. enough said. I hate that crap.

Honestly the game is more of a 8.5-8.8, but yeah. Can't pick that so we'll go with the 9. I hope you guys enjoy this as much as I did.

    1. Leveling: Allowing NPCs to fight your foes, when the foe is very strong, gives you a ridiculous amount of xp.

    2. RPG: No, this is sooo not a modern day RPG. You walk around a fixed area and talk to people. Once you talk to them you are teleported to the fighting ring. If you like pokemon red fighting transitions between fights, this game is for you.

    3. Fighting: You can spam attacks and win. Super annoying to watch and super boring to do over and over again.

Controls are conveneiently equipped with a slight delay from when you press the mouse button to when it actually happens, this makes the combat even more rugged. For some reason they decided that instead of controlling vertical and horizontal positioin while flying based on the direction you are facing/flying, they would add an ascend and descend button, which again takes away from the fluidity of combat, not to mention is just plain stupid when such an obvious and better solution is already play tested and approved as pretty much the only good way to control flght. Also, as usual, the Computer are total f**king cheap ♥♥♥'s, doing exponentially more damage than you and predicting and preemptively blocking your moves, you know, that SUPER FUN FIGHTING GAME STUFF. Hopefully they go back and balance their game in the future. Although with the release of a DLC already, it seems that greed has come in and taken over full swing, so it doesn't seem likely.

    Pros:
True to the story, even though the voice acting/dialogue is something like that of a C-Movie knock-off of a crappy B-Movie. The enviroments are familiar, warm, and (semi)destructable! The only gripe is that most maps feel "Empty" or "incomplete", like there's things missing. Purely aesthetic things, so not a big deal. The character customzation, skills, attrributes, armor, z-souls, and master/training program offer a great deal of depth to each and every fighter you create, and a more immersive RPG experience than I was expecting, very well done.

    Bottom Line:
If you're a Dragon Ball (insert your appropriate generations show, Z for me) fan, then this game is a must. Easily the best DB game that's been made. It simply cannot be missed or skipped over by fans of the franchise. For those not familiar with the show, you will be deeply lost and confused the entire time, but you might enjoy the fighting enough to pick it up, if this type of fighting game is your style (personally I HATE 2D Side-Scrollers).

    Additional Notes:
    - Poor followthrough with the game design and a HEAVY reliance on everyones most favorite, useless thing in video games next to QTE's...FARMING!
    - It's obvious this game was thrown together haphazardly and rushed out to the public prior to its completion.
    - The main story is incapable of carrying the player with it, often times progressing on, leaving the player behind to mindlessly farm side quests until they can catch up.
    - There is absolutely no balance in this game. They set the enemy to a both non-challenging and non-fun level and called it difficult, instead of lazy and frustrating.
    - The entire game is RNG based. If that doesn't exude "lazy devs" than I don't know what does.

The way the main story ends leaves an opening to a sequel which I absolutely can't stand

Multiplayer- Unless you have friends which you can play with whenever you like you will not enjoy the multiplayer because everyone uses their character over and over with spamming the ultimate until they kill you and do not try to avoid it with instant transmission because it will work once or twice but eventually you will get hit and there is nothing you can do. Maybe it will get patched but I doubt it.

overall- The game is a must play for fans however not at the full price point because you will play the story and after that there is almost nothing to do as if you try to play multiplayer many connectivity issues will occur and if that doesn't happen people will either spam ultimates or if you manage to be winning they will just disconnect from the match leaving you raging. Conclusion, Buy this game but not at full retail price either wait for a sale or borrow it. Thankyou for reading.

One is loose on technical definition, emulating the older style of fighter like Clayfighter or Ballz where pretty much anybody can pick up and play with very little learning curve. The other style is VERY technical, and meant for hardcore gamers/fighter fans. If you fall into the second category, ignore this title and wait for Mortal Kombat X next month. Dragon Ball: Xenoverse does an excellent job of re-invigorating the franchise through an intuitive character creation and progression system and manages to fully emulate the feel of an epic DBZ battle. The issue is the only cool thing about a DBZ battle is the flashy nature of the fighter, and not so much the technical prowess behind the moves (you never see Goku training late nights, Donnie Yen style with a Gi on, he just kind punches and blasts stuff). For all that, Dimps does an amazing job giving the player the true feeling of being in the DBZ universe. The story is clever but poor voice acting plagues it frequently, and the player vs. player matches would be intriguing if they worked consistently, but they do not. Server issues also plague the game, which has an MMO-esque hub-world to house its millions of players. However, when you aren't fist pounding your controller due to server problems or sighing heavily at the terrible voice acting (Racoom and Frieza sound especially terrible) you might find a good time in linking together some bad-ass combos and a flurry of ki-blasts to finish up a worthy foe. All major characters are represented and playable in-game, and there are TONS of moves to learn and combine in new ways. Even with the attacks being very similar in nature, they manage to feel varied enough in application to keep things interesting. In the end however, a lot of the fighting is nothing more than guess-work and good load-outs, and less about execution and timing. I personally have not played a DBZ game since I was in elementary school, and finally decided to give one a shot. For all that, I enjoy the game quite a bit, and it has been a fun romp down memory lane. 7/10, buy it for the spot-on DBZ quality battles, but expect to master the formula early on and potentially grow tired of the rinse-repeat quickly. In hindsight, I could have waited for the price to drop a bit, and you should too. Expand

Sound: The voice acting is hit or miss. Nothing to complain about as far as sound effects.

Gameplay: The fighting itself eventually boils down to spamming ultimate moves on the AI players while you grind for the rewards from quests, which can be replayed over and over. And trust me, if you want any of the skills not sold in the shop (which is most of them) you will have to do the same mission and pray that it drops (it's completely random.) You will find that the AI players can spam from time to time, which can get frustrating. You will be spamming right back, because after playing the same mission 20 times to get the Big Bang Kamehameha x100, you will want to get it done as fast as you can before you die inside. After completing the story that is all there is to do, replay missions over and over getting gear, moves, and items. You will get bored of it eventually but the game will probably keep you entertained for about 3-4 solid days. It is definitely not a game that most people will play much past the two week mark. There is physically a lot of things to do in the game, enough to last for a couple hundred hours. But there's a 95% chance you will be bored long before then.

Story: Mildly entertaining. It is good to see all of your favorite characters again but the plot is rather shallow. Bad guys are changing history so the good guys will lose. You have to stop them. It does not get more complicated than that. I played as a female Saiyan and every time I was referred to as a male, which is inexcusable and lazy.

Definitely worth a rent. Do not get this for local multiplayer. It is limited to 2 or 3 minute matches on one stage, which is just pathetic.

'Super Nova' and 'Giant Storm"are some of the mot effective ultimate attacks in the entire game and contrast with skills such as "Innocent Breathe', 'Vacation Delete' and 'Weekend' , which do no effectively work as they should.
The storyline has good replay value and there are many skills to be learned, Be warned however if it is total completion of all achievements you seek then think again.
Trying to gather all ultimate and super attacks as skills in the parallel quests is near impossible, as some quests simply wont drop the skill, no matter how many replays you commit to.
Parallel Quest 33 is a prime example of a quest that will not drop a skill, such as 'Hellzone Grenade', having myself played this quest more than 100 times to no avail.
Hopefully the game developers will notice this bug in due time and rectify the problem so hardcore gamers can go on to get all achievements for DBZ on the Xbox 1.

A really great game, an interesting combination of RPG and fighting game with 47 characters to choose (although the old Budokai Tenkaichi 3 have a lot).
The graphics are good for ps4 however could be better.
The sound is simply perfect, good melodies and nice effects.

For me, the best Dragon Ball game, beating BT3 in many aspects, a must have game.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse is in fact, One of the absolute best DBZ games to date.
Better than BT3? No, But a great fighter which fixes almost everything wrong with the franchise after BT3? Hell yes.
Pros- + Graphics are crisp and look gorgeous. + Character Roster has several characters + Character Creator is great + Combat is really solid, Perfect? No but really good and enjoyable. +

Im having too much fun growing my custom characters power level and collecting moves and gear. The online aspect is broken due to server problems but soon it will be fixed and it has plenty of stuff to do offline until it works right. The fighting seems basic but as the game progress you have to be startegic about how you progress your character with specific moves and armour. It's difficult at times and when that happens you need to train and a lot of bad reviews are because people just want to blow through the campaign but you really have to grind. The fights are always fun though with countless super moves and ultimates to play around with. i would recomend to anyone whos had any interest in Dragonball z ever. Expand

Bandai Namco has released the best DBZ game that has been made since the original Budokai games on the PS2. However, with the always online functionality and completely soul crushing RNG that comes with getting the essential skills and items you need to really do well in the game, things are not so peachy here. Still, it is alot of fun and there's alot to be said about that.
This game is very similar to what a DBZ MMO would look like, if it's battle system was more in line with what Budokai Tenkaichi did back in the day. However, the implementation of the battle system doesn't work well for me. While you can easily block a Super Kamehameha from Goku, a simple ki blast leaves you reeling with no way to escape the hit. Also the leveling system in the game can be unbalanced at times, making it a bit of a grind going forward.
The biggest part of the game was supposed to be the story that was made for veteran DBZ fans. Instead the leveling side battles, known as parallel battles, really steal the show. It's where you get most of the skills and equips in the game and some of the scenerios are great. However, RNG reigns king here and getting that Big Bang Attack from one mission could take 1 try or 100 tries. It's very frustrating especially since, to train with some of the characters, you need to get an item or two from these RNG-fests and it is completely awful.
The always online stuff will cause problems too. While there is an offline mode, you can't select it without having the game try to auto-log you in after the start screen. If there was a a way to start offline mode from the start it would be alot better as I've gotten to the point where the game won't even go to offline mode for me. It doesn't help that the servers have been down since launch and I haven't even been able to see what the world would look like with other people in it.
However, this is still a fun game and I would recommend it for any veteran DBZ fan that has been disappointed with the kinds of games being released in this series these past 5-7 years. With a ton of DLC already planned there's a good future here too. However, they need to get from this RNG stuff for a more set way to get the skills and items you'll need to make it and lose the always online portion. There is going to be a sequel based on how the story ended so I hope to see these changes, along with a decently revamped battle system, in the next installment. Till then, this is a serviceable game and and even better DBZ game.

This game is very great and i really enjoyed it!
It's a fighting game with MMO element. Very good graphics for a next gen consoles and PC. Character creation and clothes variation are spot on. Game uses story line from anime with a twist, moveset and game's freedom is just incredible, very easy to understand controls for the combos, game is also filled with various sense of humor.

However some gameplay elements were changed, as for a con, combos feel pretty weak that other dbz titles had (games like Tenkaichi 3 or Raging Blast). Difficulty spike is also can be a problem with character progression which will reward player earned experience. There is also a possibility that some quests won't be unlocked fully when requirements are met.

This game is a major improvement over the games like Ultimate Tenkaichi and Battle of Z, however it's still has minor flaws.
Check it out for yourself. If you're DBZ fan, then I guarantee that you will love it instantly.

For some reason when I specialised as a melee fighter, the only ultimate it gave me was a ki blast that was only effective close up. The stupid thing is that it gives the same ultimate whether or not you spec into long range, short range, or close range. It's much easier, and stupidly easy to just use the non-custom DBZ characters to do the side missions since their stats will be infinitely higher than anything you can get your character to by the time you unlock them.

If you are a fan of the anime/manga, this is a great game for you. The story's **** but at least it offers more than the same, stupid, watered down saga epic we've been seeing for the past three generations of DBZ games.

Some missions are down-right impossible. If you think that you could play as any race and fair well, good luck. The way the game is designed, unless you're a Sayian (and can Super Sayian spam Supers and Ultras), good luck. You will be hating the game.

Some missions the designers in their infinite "wisdom" decided to pretty much take all control of possibly beating those missions out of the player's hands. Things like; RNG-based events that will unknowingly ratchet up the AI's strengths, making using attacks ineffective, not thinking through when you have to protect "X" character (by not automatically slotting the said character in your group...Thus, therefore stops you from using group heal/regen items on them), and putting you into a 2 on 1 against over-powered characters, or even making a boss so over-powered that you need to be level 80 to complete (when you just completed a story mission that was more along the lines of level 10).

The controls are good, but the switching ability is clunky. Don't know how many times I got plastered by teamed up AI. One would think that by flicking the right thumb-stick would auto switch you to the nearest enemy, nope. Instead it switches you out to a character on the other side of the map!

The base mechanics are good enough. Build up Ki by physical attacks, stun, and then blast them. While it might get a little repetitive, it is still fun to get a good shot on the enemy. The MMO-styled RPG is cool, but frustrating when you want to find a new master. Would be nicer if they just changed the placement of the master instead of here one second, gone the next. The story itself is okay. It's a little too cliche to me, but it works. Although I can't figure out how the rating system actually works. One minute you do everything under the sun and get a "Z" rating, the next, you do the same thing and get a "C" or a "B".

I would've given this game a 7, or 8. But instead of making an enjoyable, yet challenging game, they proceeded to make decisions that make me hate the fact I purchased the game.

Dragon Ball Xenoverse is the game that says it all. For the first time, you don't have to fight characters you fought on previous Dbz games, or be characters like good throughout the whole game. You finally can be someone else, and they have integrated this pretty good. Get it if you know what's good for you.

Awesome game, have it on X1 and PC, plays like a mini fighting mmo, with just enough to keep you busy and happy.
Combat system is great, so as is the costumization options, making builds and mix + matching skills/z-souls/equipement is awesome, it reminds me of the good old days of CoH/CoV build making time sinks, luv it, best game this year for me :)
