Another game with reviews paid for by EA? - That's what I'd say if I were a cynic.

However, I think the reason the game got super good 10/10 reviews, and is only now being 'revised' by those same reviewers as an 'average' game, is because DA:I is one of those 'front loaded' games.

That is, all the exciting ambitious and interesting stuff happens right at the start, a torrent of storytelling and action! There's no foreplay here, it's right into the act! And god, it's good, this fine babe (or lad if you're so inclined) is sensational... And then it is over, a premature ejaculation of epic proportions.

DA:I flops because once you get past the initial rush and buzz, it is essentially an MMO game crafted for single-player. Sure, it's "open-world" with selectable areas, and there are HUNDREDS of quests, but none of these are personal or interesting, merely being generic fetch-quests a kin to an MMO.

Worse still, the main quest, while fantastically written, ends almost as soon as you decide to follow it. It peaks early and declines steadily after that and there are no more than 8 main quests to go through. Sure they're reasonably lengthy, and they're fantastically written, but it's not even 1/4 of the game. The other 3/4 is dedicated to fetch-questing and running around like a headless chicken doing MMO stuff for MMO reasons in a single player game.

The 'war table' feature, where you assign your advisors to do important tasks on your behalf is simply a missed opportunity. You send them on missions and you have to wait for a real time timer to end. It's a concept locked behind an 'energy wall', akin to those crappy Candy Crush spin offs on your mobile phone.

We get it EA, you think mobile and online gaming is the future; Newsflash; both trends died or are dieing frigging years ago, get with the times.

What DA:I does have going for it is some fantastic character writing, on par with DA:O and absolutely miles ahead of the childish fantasies of DA2. But it hamstrings itself again with changes in art, changes in lore, retconning crap it doesn't need to be retconned. This time, the Qunari are changed, because their alien (and they are alien really) culture isn't in line with social 'equality', all of a sudden they've gone from mind-washing, "our society is right, a man is a man and a woman is a woman, they do gender assigned jobs" to a "transgender people are a-ok, genderfluid behaviour is completely normal".

Not only that, the world, a fantasy world has been switched to be exclusively LGBT happy and fair and the various soapbox, mouthpiece characters harp on about it a touch too much. This isn't the older Bioware approach that allows you to experience and witness mistreatment first hand and form your own opinion on it, like in DA:O where you can actually accept a bribe to allow your own wife to be gangbang raped -OR- go on a murdering rampage because of it - , no, this is the new Bioware, who will HAMMER HOME THE POINT and tell you that oh my god, rape is wrong, cos you're a child and these inspirational modern society commentary people will educate you on it. Jog on with the patronising behaviour Sir and focus on providing a GOOD RPG.

And that, is where DA:I falls apart, it is a generic, boring, social-commentary RPG tackling 'edgy' topics that most sensible, intelligent people already accept. It dumbed down its content to epic proportions, mindless fetch-quests, energy walls and so on. Not only that, combat has been adjusted to make it even simpler, removing all semblances of tactical flexibility and fun, truly DA:I succeeded where DA2 failed, in making the game a one button game - press button, boring stuff happens.

An epic missed opportunity, and a shame to all the paid critics for yet again **** their pants with 10/10's only to remark how average the game is five months after release (like they did with DA2...ugh)

My only issues with the game would be: The game has some issues like a certain mage build being unbeatable as well as accidentally walking into parts of the map where my character is clearly not good enough to be there and the other being how mountainous the terrain is and constantly being frustrated by my lack of ability to walk places and the CPU AI can be very stupid at times.

Those four issues are the only problems I've had with the game, and none of those are game breaking in the slightest. I got sucked in, even with the semi-predictable story. Some parts of the game are better than others, but I l;oved this game and will be playing it for years.

The combat is fluid, the world is big and there are many places and secrets to explore. Fighting badass Dragons will always be fun and rewarding. To me personally, Bioware isn't quite as good at making a long lasting story that sticks with the viewer. Yes I still enjoy their games for what they are and not saying the games super bad or anything. Though, sorry the story is very quick and bland really. The open world is a change, a small one though since it's what every other game is basically trying to do or has done. The open world is a change, a small one though since it's what every other game is basically trying to do or has done. Though, for DAI I find it really didn't do anything for the story as a whole. If you play just the main story the game will last maybe six hours if that, however if you enjoy the repeated side quests that the open world gives then sure you'll have days if not more of extra crap to do. Sorry for me it just doesn't stick. The companions even, except for a few are just remade older characters. I only found a few that actually stood out. It feels more like an MMO rather than an RPG. Sure you get very nice weapon customization, however the class customization is not as good at all. Hell they even took out most of the good classes that most fans enjoyed in the prior games. There is no more blood mage, for example. They condenced and tried to mix the trees into new warpped crappier versions. Thus all and all, I wasn't particularly thrilled with the game as a whole, fun one time playthrough, but nothing I'd play more than once. Expand

The visuals are the best in the series with characters actually looking human (even though they always look like they've been in the rain) and each person you meet has a little personality which is brought on by the stellar voice acting and facial expressions.

Gameplay: The gameplay is quite varied this time round, you can either play it like DA2 with the hack n slash approach or play it tactically with the new battle menu system which gives you a birds eye view so you can micromanage your units. I personally play both, I use the battle menu to plan my initial attack such as my mage will drop a barrier and my archer will target long range and then I go headlong into the fray making battles quick and easy. The mage class suffers from the new battle system though, one of the things that DA2 got right was mage combat it was fun and you felt powerful. In DAI it's boring as hell, if you want to have fun I suggest being a warrior or a rouge.

Character Customisation: Character customisation is the best it's ever been will the addition of sliders meaning you can make a work of art or a bloody monster as you wish, my only problem is the hair styles still suck with none looking like they belong to a living creature.
Selecting your race is also back and a welcome addition, you can be a Human, Elf, Dwarf and even a Qunari this time round, although the addition of the Qunari is a good thing I feel the development was underdone, the armour available sucks especially helmet wise with those awful "vitars" and the movements in cut scenes and combat feels awkward, I believe the addition of the Qunari was a last minute thing for fan service.

Voice acting: The main character speaks like in DA2 and this is a massive pitfall in the character creation because you can choose between two voices for all races, either the American voice actor (who is terrible) or a really posh sounding English actor, The English actor is the better voice actor but his voice only suits the Human and maybe the Elf, While neither the American or the British voice actors suit the Dwarves or the Qunari. Every other dwarf in the DA series has most been Scottish sounding while all the Qunari had really deep voices that sound powerful and cool. Instead of choosing between two they should have had one for each race which actually suited the race. (Take note that I don't know what the females sound like)

The World: The world of Thedas is absolutely beautiful, I would live there war and all, the wild life looks and feels like it belongs, the wind rustles the trees and varied pallet of colours soothes the senses, but it feels empty, there isn't much to see in most areas besides wilderness as far as the eye can see broken up with the odd town or two. I think they chose the wrong areas for the game to take place, Orlais was my last choice for a place I wanted to visit, I wanted to see Tervinter or Antiva because there isn't much difference between Ferelden and Orlais and those god awful accents (Jesus Christ!). I would also like to see places I've been in previous games, you see Redcliff and that's about it, where's Orzamar or Denerim or even Kirkwall, big things happened in those places because of your actions in the previous games and I would like to see the result but alas we are restricted to hanging around with the bloody French.

Companions: The companions and supporting cast of DAI are all different and for the most part good characters, unfortunately like DA2 quite a few of your companions are terrible characters, the two I hate the most are Vivienne and Sera (Sera by far being the worst character ever) those two must have been designed to annoy you because they suffer from a rare and debilitating illness called **** syndrome.
The other characters though: Dorian, Iron Bull, Cassandra, Solas, Cole,Varric and Blackwall are all highly interesting and likeable characters with their own quirks like real people. Bioware outdid themselves with the character personalities making them feel real.

Things to do: The world of DAI is vast and there is no shortage of things to do, you can do the main quest, hunt dragons, spread your armies influence or even explore, but the side quests are almost always menial fetch quests, there are fetch quests bloody everywhere. And which developer do I have to punch in the face for that Drufalo quest!

Dragon Age Keep: The keep is one of the best ideas they had, people want to see how their choices affect Thedas but the games are long so most people wont bother, this allows you to change things quick and easy if a bit arduous at times.

Summary: Dragon Age Inquisition is a game I recommend playing for the story and the characters and if your a fan, I love it but I have to take it with a pinch of salt and I still play it today on my 3rd playthrough now.

Character customization is awful. Ugly beyond belief. Playing on PS4 and I still get choppy load in for textures. Just awful--make that boring. It's great crime is that it's boring. The vaunted Bioware storytelling has finally gone down the drain. If you were turned off by DA2 and ME3, this is more of the same. Don't buy it unless you find it cheap or if you're a masochist who loves grinding like you're in a Korean MMO.

The combat was poorly done and they butchered the tactics system which made the first two games fun. Honestly this game was my most disappointing game of 2014. The closest Corypheus gets to his moment of triumph is at Haven, where he sacrifices most of hes army to destroy a small village, again proving he has no clue what he is doing, in fact i fail to take him seriously, i think Turner D.Century or Egg Fu is better villain than Corypheus.

As for the game it's easy even on nightmare, Main Story is mediocre,Side quests have no context nor do they aid you in your struggle against this laughable foe (Corypheus)
rendering them completely useless or not worth your time.

Gameplay is made for violent 12 year-olds kids, games fast pace and MMO-like combat makes any attempt of skillful strategy useless as game gives you option to just charge in and button mash your opponent to death making tactical screen useless.

Not to mention i want to kill almost every character in the game aside from Solas, Sera and Jossie.Even my Origins favorites like Morrigan, and (unusually happy considering the situation Redhead rouge named ) Leliana.

Severely reduced RPG elements, that makes me ashamed to call this game an RPG, because it's more of a FPS.

Overall Dragon Age Inquisition is a mediocre game somehow worst game then its predecessors, made by a studio that is at this point in time a mere shadow of its former glory.

~ character designs are wildly variable, from 'actual living sentient creature' to 'hideous abomination' - which would be fine, but the way the game treats these characters makes you think it's not at all intentional

~ live combat works fine but is uninspired and not very fluid
    - whereas tactical combat is a big step down from Origins

    - custom tactical patterns for party members are very limited

~ host of easily exploitable bugs
    - accompanied by an equal number of entirely bizarre, immersion-shattering ones

    - main story is dull, and while fun to play through is not at all engaging

    - generic LOLSOEVIL villain that it's very difficult to care about

    - dialogue is stiff and doesn't feel 'real'

    - typical awkward new-Bioware sex scenes

+ long enough that you won't feel hard done by at the end
~ but some sections drag on tirelessly, especially early on

Bit of casual fun as long as you don't expect too much from it. Worth picking up if you can find it in a bargain bin somewhere - pretty sure I saw it for £22 in Tesco recently.

I should point out that I avoided reviewing DA:I on release because I was butthurt over it not being a worthy successor to Origins and Mass Effect, but I've calmed down a bit now and have no problem giving it a 6.

Dragon age inquisition is simply the best game of 2014, bioware has completely apologize themselves of the last dragon age before inquisition, the prize of game of the year was worthful.

This game is awesome. The storyline is great with amazing graphic. Although the fps is quite low but still looking smooth. A must have if you are a DA fans, this version is really a nice breakthrough.

Good right up to the point the devs got bored and forgot to include a plot. you know your at that point because the game suddenly becomes a movie instead of a game. The hinterlands are massive very draw you in. Afterwards though.. run from A to B..... done that? better run back to A!

Boring. That's the word I was looking for. Boring. I have no idea what happened to the creative minds at Bioware, but based on this game I would say they all got canned.

Dragon Age series is one of those that has it's fanboys among the gaming community as well as the professional reviewers. However, only one of the groups is getting paid for their praise. As for me, I got this game (finally) from PSN sales as I really didn't like Dragon Age 2 enough to invest in the next incarnation. First one was brilliant, though, I have to admit that much.

So what is wrong with DA:I? A lot. Being a solo RPG, the story is remarkably uninspired, which leads the player to repeatedly ask themselves "Why am I doing this?".

Secondly, the quests, and game world for that matter, are designed to emulate and MMORPG, namely vanilla WoW. That is, Step1: Get quest, Step2: Collect materials, Step3: ???, Step4: (Don't) Profit. This leads the player to repeatedly ask themselves "Why am I doing this?".

Thirdly, the battle system is, for the lack of a better adjective, broken. You can basically cruise through the whole game by pressing R2. What makes it further infuriating is that the tactical view is just absolutely useless. If you loved the battle in the first Dragon Age, don't get your hopes up. The battle system in DA:I leads the player to repeatedly ask themselves "Why am I doing this?".

Fourthly, have the times in RPG gaming really changed so much that character development is equal to ordering large fries with a happy meal? You cannot distribute any attribute points, and the only thing that "improves" the characters are better weapons and armor, as skill points are only spent on new combat abilities. As seen above, you only need one button in any battle, which leads the player to repeatedly ask themselves "Why am I doing this?".

Final verdict: This game is a sandbox for killing time. It's an MMO that tries to be an RPG or vice versa, while failing to be either.

Can we just pull the plug on Bioware already and let Player 2 take a shot at using the jaws of life on the dead RPG scene in next-gen gaming?

First thing that needs to be said is that this is a huge game; my first play-through clocked in at 68 hours and that was without finishing a fair few of the optional quests.

The second thing that needs to be said is that Bioware did not get everything perfect here, but overall it is still a fantastic game and a very positive move in the right direction by a company that seemed to have been on a downwards spiral in recent years. So just in case you hadn't guessed it already; Inquisition is miles better than Dragon Age 2. Miles better.

The graphics and landscapes here are beautiful, the maps are enormous, the world is engaging. It's the type of RPG you just don't want to put down. Gameplay feels fluid though perhaps a tad too simplistic - I much preferred the more varied amount of spells and abilities in DA: Origins. The story and writing is of the same quality you'd expect from Bioware - decent enough to keep you interested but never amazing.

I was however disappointed with the cast of companion characters in Inquisition. They just felt...bland and uninspired. Certainly a stark contrast to the quality of characterization in the first of the series where I felt a level of attachment to my group and was motivated to max out their loyalty and any companion quests.

Despite having a number of (small) flaws I found Dragon Age: Inquisition to be an extremely compelling RPG and a positive addition to the series that suitably offsets the disappointment of Dragon Age 2. The biggest appeal and achievement here is the world they have created - the maps are VAST and full of beauty and detail. You WANT to explore and you are rewarded for doing so. Very few titles have such appeal. This is a must-buy for anyone who enjoys the RPG genre.

If you care about the world and lore and characters of Dragon Age games, Inquisition is wonderful. Plot wise the game is solid, and for the first time in the Dragon Age series I feel as though I don't want to move onto a new protagonist next game. The Inquisition is far reaching across Thedas, and I feel committed to my Inquisitor and my companions to follow them through to whatever comes next.
I used to say "No one plays Dragon Age for the combat"... and I was right. Until now. Combining tactical and real time combat on PS4 is a triumph, and the game is perfect to 'play it your way'. I've played through all in real time, on casual/normal settings, and I've played through on Nightmare twice, once with lots of tactical camera, and once without, but with paying lots of attention to finding and crafting gear, and creating the best builds for everyone. All these play styles have felt fun and fulfilling, and despite being a 80- 150 hour game each time, has never become boring!
Similarly there is lots of side content, which is there if you want it, either for lore and story and character purposes, or simply for experience, but you're never forced to endlessly grind minor fetch quests. The thing about this game, is that it is wonderfully designed and balanced for you to play it the way you want. If something isn't fun for you, don't bother with it anymore- turn down the combat (or turn it up!), stop questing in the hinterlands (or do more!), whatever you want!
The multiplayer part of the game, while not quite as fun and fast paced as ME3MP, was still surprisingly fun, especially with friends, and well supported. I play it frequently, at weekends to do the challenges, and when I don't have much time but my fingers are itching for some dragon age!
Also you can smooch and cuddle with some real cuties, or get down to sexy business with them, in the best romance content bioware has ever produced. And we all know Bioware games are just overly complicated dating sims :P

I really want to love DA:I. On the one hand, I really enjoy the world, and the character interactions - always one of BioWare's strengths - are engaging and interesting. But then there is the gameplay. What began in such a promising fashion gradually became more and more of a neverending list of a chores. How many times can you close a rift populated by the same five or six types of demons before it loses any feeling of excitement? How many times can you return to an area to fight the same dangerous creatures/mercenaries you wiped out five minutes ago (especially when they are so obviously re-spawns on a short time interval?) How many times can one be sent to fetch some ridiculous number of raw materials across the countryside? How often do I have to enter an new area opened up to me by the game, only to discover that the encounters here are about five levels too much for me, and I must retreat and whittle away at random creatures for god knows how long.

Others have spoken in detail about the combat, so I won't spend too much time on that here, except to say, I agree that it is largely a hollow experience.

The further the protagonist gets, the more this endless grind overwhelms the other aspects of the game. I actually had to put it down the first time around, as I burned out on it around level 15, and didn't pick it up again until months later.

It seems fairly obvious that the MMO influence has crept into DA:I, with all that genre's cheap Skinner Box tricks and shallow gameplay. Sadly, it seems these tactics work well enough for the majority of the gaming public, so I'm guessing we will see more games following its example in the future. Me, I guess I will be playing the first Mass Effect again, and hoping BioWare realizes they can do better than DA:I.
