    The gameplay is tedious, slower movement, no crouch, monotonous and cramped arenas, constant -forced-teleporting to enemies to execute kills and refill ammo every few seconds. Badly designed platforming sections and vertical areas.
    The list goes on.. a story which they are trying to tell is told very poorly (as opposed to the much better minimalist approach from 2016), level and map designs are also a serious downgrade from 2016, graphics and artstyle , just the tone of the game in general are overly bright and cartoonish with hardly any convincing gore or horror elements to speak of. Garish and obtrusive UI. The music score.. as one of the only remaining redeeming features, still somehow never seems to match the schizophrenic pace of the gameplay.. this time around.

    Eternal is overflowing with unnecessary gimmicks. Quantity over quality.

    After playing through Eternal, went straight back into the 2016 game to refresh my memory.. The difference is like night and day. Having played through 2016 multiple times, it is a far better game.

    Doom Eternal is an average shooter, at best. I am struggling, reaching, to award it a 5 outta 10.. As they've ruined one of the greatest FpS's of all time. . its a Four! Absolutely appalling.

    a few from 2016 are:
    -what happened to doom guy where did he get warped to?
    -what happened to Hayden when he walked away with your sword at the end.

    and MORE added in eternal:
    -HOW THE HELL did u get a fortress
    -how did u get off mars
    -how and why is VEGA working in your suit n helping you?
    -how did the demonds get to earth
    -how and why is hayden split in two what happened!?!?!
    -where are all the people and ristance fighters?
    -how the hell did the deamonds build a huge ♥♥♥ fortess in artica in a matter im hrs!?!?!

    I dont know what bathesda is doing over there but there past few games have been nothing but train wrecks...and for me this is the LAST nail in the coffin for me and there games...its obvious there lack of story telling the past few games fallout 76 and now this they dont give a ♥♥♥♥ about people who play there games for story....only the mindless shooter fortnite/cod/ playerbase.

    game itself is not worth the price it is now...to me its a $20 game. no more no less...the gunplay is bland n boring click shoot, press e, chainsaw repeat...and when you get your sword that ADDS one more button press...v! The people complaining about ammo....i never had a issue chainsaw n bang! full ammo. Now dont get me started on the platforming...WHAT A STUPID addition! Most of the time i was raging just because i had to do this stupid ♥♥♥♥....

    We all know Bathesda will be themselves and say "oh we had a overwhelming response to ppl loving this game!" just like they did with fallout 76...and to why i didnt write a review is because i dont own the game on steam. but i can tell u this now that i finished it i got a refund on it because it is not worth my money.

    Meh...It hasn't impressed me much. If you are expecting as good or better than Doom 2016, this is not going to deliver. Very disappointed. Graphics are cartoonish, too much damn jumping. Ammo management was irritating, although not impossible. This was a waste of my Saturday and 60 bucks.

    DOOM Eternal is the direct sequel to 2016's DOOM. Developed by id Software, DOOM Eternal delivers the ultimate combination of speed and power, along with the next leap in push-forward, first-person combat. As the DOOM Slayer, you’ll return to take your vengeance against the forces of Hell.

    Doom Eternal has some of the elements that make the Doom series great, (including fantastic intro music though it never quite lives up to the heady days of Doom 2 and Quake). There is a lot of horrible platforming that is definitely not fun. You collect tokens to unlock collectibles in your bag but there are more keys than doors, which is odd and makes a lit of the secrets feel pointless. Some enemies are poorly designed (marauder) and force awkward playtime. I was glad to complete the game and put it down for good. The last couple of bosses are horrendous. One literally changes all the game mechanics you rely on and has the classic 'invulnerable' phase. Just poor game design that has no place in 2020 Expand

    The graphics are the only nice thing I have to say about this game really. The game runs quite smoothly and the first level or so is quite visually impressive. However that's where my compliments come to an end. I only played the first three levels so bear this in mind, but I got sick of the blandness across the level, such as lava and red rock terrain everywhere. Executing enemies is a sight to behold, but after a dozen executions this just becomes a chore and a bore as you watch the same graphical manoeuvres repeatedly.

    Despite only playing a handful of levels, the story didn't make any sense to me. It felt like I was dropped in halfway through it and there was no way of getting up to speed on what was happening. Older Doom games didn't really have a story and I much prefer this over the modern iteration's attempt through having random cut-scenes and characters appear with nonsensical dialogue. I don't understand how they screwed this up so badly. All we needed was a basic story akin to Oblivion where we needed to close off a portal to stop demons coming through. Actually, I do know how they screwed this up and I will explain below.

    The gameplay is where Doom lives up to its name in all the wrong ways. The most obvious experience is that I was constantly struggling to have enough ammo and was getting killed very easily even on the lowest difficulty. This doesn't strike me as true to the ethos of Doom; this feels more like artificial and unbalanced difficulty with bad game design. In addition to this, Doom suffers from you facing hordes of enemies, which becomes wearisome fairly quickly. This makes the game feel more like a run of the mill zombie shooter rather than a Doom game.

    I need to give the platforming its own special mention. It really is dreadful. You are constantly jumping around the level and using mid-air dashes to reach higher ground. Basically if you're not shooting hordes of enemies you are jumping to the next platform to activate the next horde. It doesn't help that the platforming mechanics don't really lend themselves well to Doom and are combined with bad level design.

    Last but definitely not least, I believe what has ruined this game most of all is the live services model it has adopted. After installing the update I got a new background skin just for logging in. Then I noticed the menus had added sections such as 'events' and other adverts only found in live services games such as Fortnite. This makes more sense when you consider that the game is clearly geared towards online multiplayer and the campaign feels tacked on if anything. This makes the game more like Call of Duty or Fortnite using a Doom skin.

    Overall, Doom has lost sight of what it made it great. This is unsurprising given that Bethesda are at the helm. Doom should exist as a cult attraction much in the way Resident Evil did, and they made a much better job or recent RE remakes than these Doom offerings, which isn't saying much. This is not a Doom game. It lacks the atmosphere, level design and tension of older Doom games such as Doom 64. Do not bother with this.

However what was delivered is honestly a mixed bag. (I played Doom Eternal on Ultra Violence)

    The positives:
    -At times some of the most intense, fast paced FPS action delivered in years.
    -Amazing visuals, level design, great sound design.
    -Some great homages to the original Doom games.
    -Glory kills.

    The negatives:
    -The MARAUDERS. Easily the most frustrating and game breaking enemy I've ever had the displeasure of battling in a game. When you encounter one as a boss you think that's it but these guys later show up as regular enemies in the game. I have beaten Doom 2016 on Nightmare, Metro Exodus on Ranger Hardcore, Devil May Cry on Dante Must Die mode and none compare to the sheer frustration of encountering a Marauder on Doom Eternal. A Marauder makes almost every weapon in your arsenal almost useless and he can block a BFG blast. That's right. A NORMAL non-Boss enemy in a Doom game making the mother of all guns the BFG useless. Expect to die at least 10 times plus whenever one of these Marauders shows up. Expect to have your progress halted and the entire fast paced, fluid flow of Doom Slayer chaos reduced to a stall. The demons are supposed to fear the Doom Slayer yet I honestly end up fearing the Marauder for the frustration he is about to bring upon my game. That's NOT what Doom is supposed to be about. I replayed Doom 2016 several times, sadly I will not be replaying Doom Eternal, mainly because of these game breaking Marauders. Whoever thought the Marauder was a good idea was wrong. Easily the WORST enemy in a Doom game period. Fine for a boss, terrible for a regular enemy.

    -Platforming. Is this an Doom game or a Crash Bandicoot game? At times it feels more like the latter with multiple platforming sections which again slow the game to a stall, become frustrating and involve no demon killing. I want to shoot demons not swing on poles and climb walls. I wanted a First Person Shooter not a platformer. Some mild platforming is fine but Doom Eternal has too much.

    In conclusion: A mixed bag. At times Doom Eternal feels like the best of Doom and Quake 3 mashed together which is simply amazing yet it is too punctuated with enthusiasm killing enemies (MARAUDER) and platforming sections for Doom Eternal to rise to the top and reach first person shooter nirvana. Don't believe all the paid critic hype. Play for yourself and see.

    I'd prefer to just get in the lift (ok, so everything is broken so are the lifts) to get to the next rather than learn to do acrobatics or fail and fall to my death I mean lose 20 health err. what? Sure put it in as ways to hide specials/upgrades but not in the get between the current part and the next part of the game.

    After playing for a while you realise that you have to get the thing to glow orange and press the right key at the right distance at the right time so you can get the appropriate kind of 'confetti' when the monster dies so you don't run out of ammo/armour/health. I get what they were going for, but it seems more annoying than fun although there's still skill required to do so successfully.

    It looks pretty, but some of the tradeoffs are you spend a while trying to work out whether you're meant to be able to jump/climb the thing or not. Some of the collision detection with the environment just seems awkward sometimes. That looks like a ledge I should be able to stand on but you fall off. Haven't played it enough and gave up on it, but got the feeling collision detection was a bit off at times as well.

    I haven't played something in the Doom series itself for a quite a while but it seems overly concentrating on the over the top gore/animations because they invested so much in it forced them to change the gameplay to focus on that and therefore made it less fun to play overall.

    Multiplayer seemed a bit narrow - no basic deathmatch mode, just a 2v1 specialised mode? It looked interesting but with a high initial investment. Can't comment on it yet. But no apparent way to leap in the action and have fun immediately in multiplayer. Err. What?

    Maybe the younger generations are happy with it, it turned out not to be what i was hoping for.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Although i m really grateful for the efforts of the dev team, this game really didn’ t hit the mark. The cartoonish graphic is out of place, but they mentioned it when announced so i was prepared fo that, what i was not prepared for was the jump in the storyline/plot from the end of the previous one and the beginning of this, not to mention these seemingly divine creatures appearing out of nowhere or this Betrayer guy sitting there talking to me like he is my father; no idea who they are but Doom guy clearly does!! So much for immersion in the story!

    This new Space fortress/base/gadget storage feels very much like Wolfenstein TNC, it cuts the levels and you basically go in places that you never heard of to fix situations you didn’t know happened.

    The combat system, as a lot of people already mentioned....not really entertaining. Wasn’t it supposed to be a Power Fantasy? Feels more like a Farming Fantasy honestly, you are the weakest element in the battlefield ( they still call you Slayer tho) and the game forces you to literally run away to collect ammo/hp/armor to be able to survive and slowly chip away health from the 2-3 actual enemies present. I m not saying Doom 2016 was perfect but combat was satisfying, waves and waves of enemies but you still felt competitive, you could pierce their ranks while still need to find health and reposition yourself. I m not complaining about being too difficult, i enjoy Ultra- violence but the base concept of the combat is not fitting in my opinion.

    I understand that after the huge success the team felt they could do anything and i read a lot of people screaming at the miracle this game is, it s clearly not a miracle but the passion was there and is enough for a 4 just to balance out. P.S. i will not talking about the platforming parts so I save the time i wasted on it.

    Doom (2016) was excellent – a fairly back-to-basics FPS, executed superbly with surprisingly good worldbuilding and it even snuck in a good story. Then Eternal said "more is better" to everything and ruined it with awkward new game mechanics, platforming, boring level design, emphasis on using the chainsaw to collect ammo, stupid dialog from the AUC holograms, etc. It's just not fun.

It gets to the point of just being stupid. I’m at the Taras Nabad level and it’s become so irritating that I’ve lost any desire to keep playing. The game is so repetitive, chainsaw, glory kill, flame, glory kill, shoot an imp in the leg, glory kill, shoot some stuff, out of ammo already, chainsaw. The game forces you to play a certain way. Instead of choosing the gun you like, you use whatever has ammo, and let the game choose your next one when you run out in 4 seconds.

    Most disappointing game of the year.

    Perhaps it was better on PC, I wouldn’t know.
    The initial impressions weren’t good and the game just didn’t find its feet from then on out.

    Combat involved entering an arena, and then burning through all your weapons to kill enemies and repetitively break some jaws (so many times) to get shiny objects, then move to next arena and repeat. Unpopular opinion I know, believe me. I tried very hard to like this game and I almost stopped playing it but I needed to complete it and give it that at least.

    I’d recommend playing the 2016 release again rather than purchasing this latest release. 2016 captured the horror that is Doom, Doom 2 and even Doom 3 but Eternal just felt like I was driving a tank in a game that struggled with its own identity.

Even on "Don't Hurt Me" difficulty, you will get your ass handed to you and die over and over after the first 15 minutes are done. They seem to want you to juggle several gameplay elements at once, rather than the tried-and-true "shoot the demons and don't die" that is the hallmark of Doom. They also really want you running out of ammo at every turn, and running out of gas for your chainsaw too, so that you have to take on an endlessly respawning room of demons with your fists (spoiler: you will not win.) Does that sound fun to you? It makes me want to punch a hole in the wall, frankly, and that's not why I play video games. They're supposed to relieve stress, not create it.

After you die a few times trying to get the rooms rhythm down, and clear it using all the room resources, it re-spawns a number of those new enemies and some farm-able basics.

    So you end up in the same room on repeat trying to get the timing just right until you get to a new checkpoint and repeat the same process. You spend more time at the loading screen then playing at each section.

    A draw back at the face pace they want to apply and opponents weak spots is you have to constantly move to get swarmed, which increases the likelihood you miss.

    So honestly the game is just you getting to a new area, dying until you get the area figured out then repeating the process, and this is on the normal level.

    Trying to merge precision and a biz feel make the game play choppy and ruins the pacing. Zone 1, Checkpoint 1 I died probably six times because I couldn't get two seconds to breath to hit the 'weak point' of the enemy without it dropping heavy artillery on me and almost instantly killing me in one volley.

    I am currently trying to get a refund.

But worst of all the gameplay is no fun (remember this is only my personal opinion). The Jump'n Run mechanics simply don't work for me: I always have a wrong angle, get stuck at an edge or simply don't really know where I am supposed to go. And shooting is based on overwhelming the player with loads of enemies and some of them are just stupid spamming shields. I never quite have the feeling to be in control or to know how to best kill the enemies. There's pretty high difficulty spike in the later third of the game, which made me quit the game altogether.
    Seems like many people enjoy it, but this game is obviously not made for me and I haven't felt so lost with a controller since PS1 times.

    Итак, начнем с плюсов:

    + Превосходная оптимизация. Никаких лагов, тормозов, фризов. Все плавно и стабильно на среднем железе, на ультрах;
    + Отличный саундтрек. Тяжелая динамичная музыка, хорошо вписывается в происходящее;
    + Разносторонняя система прокачки персонажа;
    + Испытания и секреты на уровнях;
    + Есть меч для ближнего боя, хоть и всего с тремя зарядами;
    + Сочные бои в формате один против всех. Порой сражения довольно трудные и непредсказуемые. Резня может оборваться в любой момент;

    Теперь минусы:
    - Рваный сюжет с непоследовательной подачей. Нет ярких персонажей, затягивающей линии сценария, имеются откровенные ляпы. Хоть какое-то подобие сюжета начинается когда уже большая часть кампании пройдена;
    - Навязанная механика боя, которая делится на ближний бой и супер-ближний бой. Все способности, прокачка, большинство стволов заточены под рукопашку. Это очень уныло, когда нет выбора, КАК тебе воевать. Любые отступления от задуманной механики жестко караются отсутствием боеприпасов, либо ордами демонов, которые нарочно лезут в клоз;
    - Мало боеприпасов. Да, повторяю ЕЩЁ раз... Здесь ощущаешь себя на повелителем боя, а бешеным алчущим, который только и думает, как бы кого-нибудь распилить, чтобы хватило патронов до конца схватки;
    - Дизайн уровней. Нечто среднее между Quake и Unreal Tournament 3. Да, тут сплошные арены. Локации мало связаны логически, как внутри себя, так и между собой. Они КРАСИВЫ визуально. Однако исследовать их, как в Думе2016 нет никакого желания;
    - Из-за предыдущего пункта напрочь отсутствует атмосферность и ощущение присутствия;
    - Катсцены от 3-го лица... Тут не знаешь, закрывать лицо ладонью или хихикать. Кажется, будто вернулся в стрелялки начала 2000хх. И ох уж эта ФИЗИОНОМИЯ палача! Лучше бы её не показывали;

    В целом вердикт такой. "Если бы не было Doom 2016, то...". Именно предыдущая часть задрала планку до небес Земли и ада. В нём было совершенно всё. Етернал дойти до такого же уровня увы не смог.

    WHEN some enemies are susceptible is unclear. WHAT weapons damage some enemies is unclear. Some enemies cause you to maintain distance which heavily restricts the fast-paced movement the game is known for.

    Doom Eternal in a nutshell: I died 30 times on the second boss, barely getting it to 50% life on my best run. The game offered me Sentinel Armor. I put on Sentinel Armor, and I defeated the boss without taking ONE point of health loss.

    C'mon, id, there HAS to be a middle ground. In fact, I know there is. I played Doom 2016.

    In a fast-paced game all about movement, you do not lock upgrades that give you better movement control behind upgrades

    In a well-balanced game, difficulty settings provide a proper challenge that you can meet.

The combat for starters is a lazy mess, my guess is that they tried to be resident evil, because you run out of ammo so fast, and dying is fine, but when I am about to hit the peak of the soundtrack, and i run out of ammo, I feel cucked, i then have to run over to the nearest enemy, try not to kill it, then use the chainsaw (which uses a god awful fuel mechanic) to get ammo which spews out colorful pretty ammo icons in complete contrast to the atmosphere. to further back my destiny joke in the beginning, i meant that as in... The mechanics are also ass, I have ‘missed’ a ledge or monkey bar not because I wasn’t close, because the game just didn’t work. I died about 30 times trying to activate that 3rd ring right before the Khan boss fight. Why in a game that is known for ripping and tearing do I have to constantly platform idk why. To add to that, mostly every encounter is based on platforming as well. The battle areas are small and you HAVE to use the monkey bars , jump pads, and portals to move around. I tried to just play in the ground and I just get mauled. I personally hate games that require a bunch of maneuvering like that. The main reason I fell in love with doom 2016 was because the ground gameplay was so smooth and well rounded that I was able to perfect it and move onto more harder difficulties. Back to the battle arenas, the khan mayker battle is so stupid. The arena is so small that you have to make an actual effort not to fall off. Also I mentioned earlier the mechanics were buggy, well during this fight you have to use the meat hook on the Khan and as you close in you have to blood punch her. 5/10 my punched acted Like I punched the wall and not an enemy, I was furious. I’m facing the icon of sin rn and if I’m being honest I’m not gonna finish it cause it’s the same bull crap. Small map that constantly makes you move. The game forces you too move around way to much taking away from what makes the game fun and different, rip and tearing demons apart. Just regular encounters you have to constantly be moving around using the whole environment, and it’s too much movement. Half time I’m trying to avoid being hit I walk onto a jump pad that launches me half way across the map. Very few times can you just go toe to toe with the demons and your guns without having the annoyance of platforming. I was so excited for this game but now it’s just a disappointment. If I can take the gameplay of 2016 and mix it with the demons and guns in eternal, I would cause to me that’s a perfect game. Not saying it’s a bad game but not the game I was expecting. If you Arnet a big fan of platform games, than don’t waste your money. Expand

    I loved 2016 and having finished Eternal, the gameplay isn't the only issue I have with it :

    Invisible walls everywhere. The levels read horribly in that regard and the level design is as limiting as the gameplay.
    2016 got flanderized in Eternal. The story is a joke. The tone is one big fourth-wall break. 2016's story was far, far more powerful and its tone very successfully skirting the line between meta-commentary and subtle. VEGA being saved, the tension with Hayden, the absolute, rorschach-level slaughter of demons, all of it was amazing. Eternal feels like that cook that doesn't get that seasoning is all about restraint and having just the right amount and instead emptying jugfuls of salt and pepper onto it because "people liked it last time". They took the fun quip about "mortally challenged" and hammered it over and over, as if the writer was going "Hey, that was funny last time, right? Right?"
    Two third of the levels don't sell anything about the world, they make you feel nothing. The only ones that did anything were the ones in that elder-maykr-sentinel ancient thing-setting that only managed to be beautiful. Levels exist to be traversed in Eternal whereas in 2016 they elicited both story and a sense of place despite the comparatively much-more limiting Mars UAC setting.

    And of course, the gameplay. I want to run and shot at stuff, and I balk at the defense of the new mechanics as "skill". Quake 3 didn't require a chainsaw to reload.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Bought it on sale and I'm still not convinced it was worth it even at half off. I'll start by saying that I absolutely loved Doom 2016, love love loved it! I loved it so much that I bought it again for the switch when I got one (sure it's not as good looking on switch but I wasnt expecting it to be.) That is why I'm so sad that this game doesnt live up to it. Within the first couple minutes of playing I felt like everything was off and I wasnt going to like it. The more I played within the first few minutes I could feel the look of disapointment growing on my face. The music doesnt grip me like the last game, and in the beginning I felt like it didnt match up with the action at all. The constant running around looking for ammo is repetitive and annoying. Like I get the argument of how it can make the game more challenging, but to me it just took me out of the action and made me have to run from fights- which is not what Doom Guy is about. Which leads me to the story. What the **** am I playing? Seriously I feel like I missed an entire game worth of story. I'm sure the lore parts clear up a lot but I payed for a game, not a book. I have almost no idea on what's going on and it is really taking me out of the game experience. I know having exposition dumps in the beginning dont make for good story telling, but if any game needed it, it would be Doom Eternal. I've only played as far as the gore nest mission but from my understanding of the story there are 3 guys you got to kill to stop the demons from completely destroying earth. Okay fine. In the beginning you kill one right away- total Doom guy move. Then you show up to where the other two are and just listen to them talk. Doom guy is right there and he could have just killed them and ended things right there. Why the **** didn't he? Then after you kill the second one, the big final boss like hacks your ship to tell you that they are hiding the last guy. Why would they do that? Also, if they hacked Doom Guys ship, why not just **** with all the systems onboard and crash his ship or something? It doesnt make sense to me and at this point I have checked out story wise. The addition of platforming puzzles was interesting for about 5 minutes and then got me annoyed. I dont feel like that really keeps with the tone of the game. It's cool to grab poles and swing while in combat but everything else is lame to me. I want to keep going because I paid for it and I hope that there can be something I can enjoy. But in terms of the changes to guns and ammo and combat Idk. Theres soo much added in up front that I forget a lot of the time and switching between weapons and grenades is little clunky on a ps4 controller. I'm gonna try to finish it, but I'm not expecting much else from this game. The only positive I see in this game is that it looks awesome. Expand

    Lack of ammo and weapon management is awful. Got the "super" weapon for six keys and used it zero times, because it uses bfg ammo. Marauders mechanics are very bad, sometimes you shoot through them without dealing any damage and since you have only 12 shots on powerful shotgun it breakes the whole fight.

Do you want to go through the same challenges to get the same weapon upgrades for the same weapons as Doom 2016? Do you want to have sudden, and unexplained plot developments that just ‘happen’ because they need it to to have an excuse to move the story on?

    Do you want to lose everything that made Doom 2016 amazing and keep everything bad about it, with some awful high speed additions? WELCOME to Doom Eternal, where you can do all of these. Eternal is one of the biggest letdowns I’ve ever had, and I played Fallout 76....

    Glory kills are lame as can be and have no real ‘glory’ about them they’re literally just easy ways of getting ammo which is like gold dust, you’re CONSTANTLY running out. And I mean constantly. The super shotgun when fully loaded with fully upgraded ammo capacity holds 22 shells, the super shotgun fires two at once so actually you only have 11 shots. 11 shots on the most iconic gun in the game.....
    I cannot explain with just words and no video how lazy the designers have been with creating new glory kills and new equipment. The ‘flame belch’ which is about 1.5 seconds of fire with a 5 foot range is one of the most over-sold lame weapons I have ever seen. The grenades are now in the form of pointless frost Grenade, and moderately useful frag. Both of which aren’t thrown anymore just fired from a shoulder mounted cannon, all to make sure your hands are free to not-fire your guns because they’re all out of ammo.

    All of the weapon upgrades are identical to Doom 2016, and have had no upgrades, updates or additional abilities. The challenges to get them are exactly the same. The ‘boss’ fights are again insanely dull, the ‘Gladiator’ boss? Seriously? You have the entire scope of demonic hellish creatures and you make a dull and lazy version of a character that’s been done in numerous other franchises? The ‘puzzles’ of movement and getting around aren’t as irritating as some are saying, but they’re not puzzles that require thinking and skill and trial and error, they’re puzzles that literally just take you trying and trying and trying to time the double jump or the boost. It truly is ironic that a game about hellish creatures, should itself be an absolutely hellish experience. I kept on playing and playing HOPING that maybe it will progress, maybe I’ll get new abilities and new guns, and maybe next level it’ll change, maybe next level and then it was the last level and it was over. What a letdown. Why they needed extra time to release this I am sure I do not know. It doesn’t take 6 months to press copy and paste. Doom Eternal is everything bad about Doom 2016 and nothing good. It’s guilty of an even bigger crime however. Doom Eternal, is just plain lazy.

Most of the game I was just hoping to get to the end and play something else. I stopped playing the game like 10 times before I finished it. So there are many issues with Doom Eternal on Playstation. Doom 2016 was an amazing experience, I had lots of fun on the hardest difficulty, everything was working. Doom Eternal does not have it. No offense towards the devs, I am pretty sure the game feels very different when played with mouse and keyboard. Or at least with the back buttons adjustment. This is not my Doom. Got this as a gift cause I had shown interest. With all the great reviews I was ready to jump back into gaming for the first time in 10 years. I played for about 30 mins between jumping to find my way, and constantly running out of ammo and fuel I give up. Doom to me was about shooting demons and having fun. This was nothing but frustrating.

It turned out that the biggest game he co-developed (DOOM) followed this rule. As did the 2016's reboot: stand up, slam a demon's face to pulp, grab a gun and step into your mighty armoured suit. The space marine aka Slayer eventually smashes a screen to prevent long storytelling at the beginning of the game. Let's go!

    The game had a nice build-up, perfectly crafted levels, a well mixed soundtrack, a back-to-basics multiplayer and even a level editor. Take this very same concept, throw in some crayons and flashy paint plus tonnes of Red Bull and you get this game. It will eternally haunt you and leave you saddened if you have been loving this series since the early days.

    Dear id-software: DOOM is not platforming, nor is it a game suited for bright pink, purple, yellow,... colours. DOOM isn't choosing a particular weapon to defeat a certain enemy, it was Metroid Prime that perfected this and did it way better. DOOM let's you see and feel the game through the eyes of the Slayer, so why throwing in cutscenes in a way it was done in games in the early nillies? It ruins the pace of the game. The amount of things you can do next to the main storyline is ridiculous: upgrade your gun, suit, enemies, gameplay, with runes and tokens and... Change the appeal, behaviour,... of the enemies. It's all totally unnecessary and pointless. Collecting skins like Pokémon.

    I tried to love the new approach, but after 4 hours of playtime I've had enough of it. Thank god I have some great childhood memories left of the nineties DOOM games. One good advice for the gamers that read this: don't buy this game, even when it's on sale! Do you want DOOM on it's finest? Then play the 2016 version or the original ones.

    This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Worst than Doom 3 in my opinion, and Doom 3 is not even a proper Doom game, but I had way more fun playing it than this non-doom game.

    Let's get the one good thing out of the way quickly: The graphics are stunning. Way better than Doom 2016, and the framerate is so smooth that I have to wonder how the hell did they pull this off. Hats off to whoever made the graphics and the game engine.

    The music, is good also but none of the tracks has yet stuck to me. I couldn't get the music of Doom, Doom 2 and Doom 2016 out of my mind, I can't even recall the music from this one. Not bad but not very memorable for me either.

    Level design makes ZERO sense: Two titans, which I don't even know what they are at this point, are frozen in place right before one killed the other. I have to find a battery to put into the spear of one of the titans so that the energy lance will active and tear the sternum of the other titan open (mind you both of them are just standing still, like buildings). Then once all the guts spill out, I will jump into the hole in the titan's chest, to go through the titan, exiting through his back (or maybe his butt, I'm not sure), to fall into a platforming section that looks like Goomba's castle from Mario, with spinning chains of fire, enemies all over the place, while you wadle though a swamp with completely hidden tentacles that jump out and hit you while you are trying to shoot at other enemies, cause aparrently players like getting hit by hidden tentacles when they are trying to do something else. Does any of this make any sense to you? Cause it makes no sense to me. This is graphics driven game design: we want two titans in an epic pose, we want Goomba's castle, and we want tentacles, now make a level that has all of these.

    The fighting is simply annoying. I have to think: which weapon do I need to use to kill this enemy, where exactly should I hit the enemy (cause weakspots are fun in a doom game), when should I hit them in the weakspot perhaps they need to have their mouth slightly open or it doesn't work and you need to wait, do I have enough ammo to do that or will I run out of ammo at the worst possible moment (there is a serious lack of ammunition compared to every other doom game to force you to use all the weapons), oh and also check if you have armor, cause if you don't you should remember to set the enemy on fire before shooting them so that they drop armor shards for you. Oh and don't over-shoot enemies cause you'll easily lose the glory kill if you shoot them with two more bullets of the assault rifle (compare that with how lax Doom 2016 was when you overshoot a "blue" enemy). Also don't forget that you should not be very excited with the melee cause it sucks now. It's causing pretty much zero damage now unless you have done some glory kills when you get one strong punch that annihilates multiple enemies around you. So don't try to melee any low level creeps unless you are going for a glory kill, otherwise you'll lose that strong punch for no reason.

    Gone is the "I'll wreck everything" style of Doom 2016. Not only because of how puzzley fights have become, or how much platforming it now has, but from the second level already, the "doomslayer" bends the knee to someone. What the.... the guy that did not care about a single thing in 2016, now decides to show respect to someone who is telling him off at the same time for caring about humanity. OMG what's next? Discovering that the doomslayer has a character and feelings? Am I still playing Doom here?

    I'm not that far in the game but the lore has also gone off the hook. Not sure how they pulled that off but I constantly feel like I'm watching an episode of a series and slowly realizing that I must skipped over the previous episode. But I haven't, I played 2016, I read the lore, and I still don't understand half of what is going on. I'm being guided by green etherial dogs... I'm just lost trying to figure out what is going on when I should be running and gunning.

    I'll put difficulty at the lowest setting to speed things up and try to grind through the unbearable fights only because I wasted money on this. Hopefully the lore will be worth it. I was so excited for this game, now I'm more excided about Doom64 that I got for preordering this.

    Maybe you'll like this. Apparently many people like it. Just keep in mind that this is not Doom 2016. It is way more complex, you'll be thinking way more instead of enjoying raw violence. The similarities with Doom 2016 are: glory kills exist in both, it's the same universe (but I wouldn't say it's the same doomslayer), some demons exist in both games, and well that's all. The two games feel completely different. I was hoping for more Doom 2016, I got an annoying puzzle shooter.

The dash, while good in theory makes normal movement feel slow which is exactly the opposite of how Doom should feel. And finally, the ammo management. The max ammo you can hold has been cut by more than half since Doom 2016. Insecure fanboys will shout (and I mean SHOUT) all kinds of justifications about this at you, but the fundamental issue is this: Doom eternal wants you play the game a very specific way. For all the talk about how it's "strategic" it forces you to adopt one very specific strategy--use all the ammo in all your guns then hunt down trash demon and chainsaw it for more ammo. There's two problems with this. First, I don't want to be forced into a specific way of playing the game. Second, the game does a TERRIBLE job telling you that that's the intended way to play and even worse job encouraging it. If you're going to make killing imps/possessed the name of the game, you should make it so they don't stop spawning until the big baddies are dead. And should make sure that they aren't on the other side of the arena than the mini-boss enemies. Having to turn around and sprint away from a mancubus so I can chainsaw an imp in some odd corner of the arena isn't just a limiting design decision; it's an objectively bad one and on that runs counter to the supposed "keep pushing forward nature of Doom."

    The devs did a great job ensuring that each weapon has it's uses, you can't ignore any of them. In fact, the ammo limit hurts here, because often you're forced to use less-than-ideal weapons simply because they're the only ones with ammo.

    There are so many controls that some have to be mapped to L3 and R3 which means that you are going to be frequently using up resources by accident - and there are LOADS of different resources. Armour tokens, weapon tokens, XP, Praetorian tokens it has more resources and more resource management than your average free to play mobile game - at least there they are the game. I don't know what neverending inventory management was meant to bring to Doom.

    The gameplay is a massive step backwards from Doom 2016 and it plays a lot more like Ratchet and Clank. Run around small arenas in circles looking for ammo and spend more time in weapon wheels trying to find something with ammo than actually aiming and shooting.

    Oh and the neverrending tutorials. I returned Xcom 2 for the same reason - a game, especially doom, shouldn't be stopping every 5 minutes 3 hours into the game with another tutorial. Is this really what modern gamers want?

    I absolutely hate Doom Eternal with a passion and it should be stripped of the name.

    It is 1/3 flight sim, 1/3 free to play mobile game and 1/3 ratchet and clank.

    If you're looking for a Doom 2016 experience, this is not it. The gameplay is so asinine and rinse & repeat that I barely want to keep finding imps and zombies to chainsaw for ammo, since the developers thought that would be fun to force players to do. Every new aspect of this game slows down the pacing, and that is not what a sequel to one of the best shooters should be like.

    Everything DOOM 2016 achived was thrown away into the garbage; the world building, characters, story and somehow even gameplay.

    The gameplay in 2016 was one of the best in any FPS, it felt fluid and amazing. DOOM Eternal has, what it feels like, a fixed and static gameplay system that you can't control. Example: You are forced to use certain weapons on enemies too kill them; which ruins the famous term "Shoot at it until it dies"

    It's no longer "shoot at it until it dies" as you get punished for it. Biggest example (of many) are boss fights. Every boss (except the final one) is no longer dynamic like in 2016. Every boss has a fixed pattern and you have to do certain things before you can attack the boss for a *limited time*.

    DOOM Hunter - Destroy the shield.
    Marauder - Wait for the eyes to flash green.
    Gladiator - wait for the magic shield to go down.
    Khan Maykr - Forced to use the meat hook and fist before you can attack her for a limited time.

    The world building is by far a big let down of any game I've played. In 2016 you slowly move through Mars getting closer and closer to your destination as seen from the world, Example:
    On the first level you could see the argent tower from the very beginning and after each level you the tower gets closer and closer, and when you're finally there you get to climb up the whole tower.
    DOOM Eternal has none of that simply because you don't get to stay in one place at all.

    The absolute biggest issue with this games world building and immersion is teleportation.
    First you're on Earth, then in a different dimension, then in hell then back to earth and now you're somehow in heaven. This completly ruined the DOOM universe to me.
    2016 had Mars and Hell. Eternal has countless dimensions that have no place in DOOM whatsoever.

    And now the biggest let down for me and the biggest middle finger to 2016 is the destruction of Mars. Everything the DOOM 2016 has built up with the UAC, gone, in mere seconds, simply because of a cutscene that tried to blind the player with "WOW, a cOoL bIg lAsSer" while destroying the home place of the DOOM franchise for god knows whatever reason.
    But seeing how Eternal has chosen Fantasy over Sci-fi, I wouldn't be suprised if Mars was magically brought back.

    But what makes me hate Eternal the most, is the aracady direction ID went with this game.

    HUD/UI:
    The HUD looks like something you would see in a mobile game. I have no doubt that this HUD was inspired by Apex legends. EXACT same geomeotry and use of bright colors. The thing with Apex is that the bright colors are very needed for fast navigation with the ammo managment. ETERNAL DOESN'T NEED THAT. Hugo or Marty mentioned that the bright colors purpose is to distinguish the ammo, which makes absolutly zero sense as it was never needed at all.

    Floating props:
    This is something that completely annihilated the immersion this game had to offer.Floating Weapons. Floating book pages. 2 Meter long question marks. (+Fcking confetti when you walk through it).
    I feel sorry and bad for the people who made the concept arts and desing for the levels.
    Imagine making something so big and eerie just so there can be a big floating question mark in the middle of nowhere.

    Oversaturation of levels:
    DOOM 2016 had three color choices for levels to stick with: Red, Dark Green and "cool" colors.
    DOOM Eternal uses the entire color spectrum for each level. No level is easy on the eyes when it comes to the colors.

    Ridiculous skins:
    This come back to where I said "a joke that doesn't take itself serious".
    If you told me 4 years ago that the next game DOOM game would have the slayer wearing a greasy t-shirt with a "extra thicc" text on it I would have called you crazy
    I want you guys to look at 4 examples I gave you and imagine 2016 with all of that. It's simply impossible.

    Last thing I wanna talk about is the story.
    DOOM 2016 had a very simplistic story. You wake up and start killing and destroying. This is all DOOM should be. 2016 also had a cliff hanger that was for nothing as Eternal doesn't start where 2016 stopped.

    Hayden isn't a smart human that died of cancer and got reincarnated as a robot. Hayden is god of all of recreation.

    VEGA isn't a super computer that was created and tested by UAC employees (That needs absolute zero cooling btw). Vega is a god in a USB stick.

    I've to stop here as I've reached the limit.
    DOOM Eternal has **** up the entire franchise. I see no future of DOOM whatsoever. The next DOOM should just be a mario styled arcade shooter. Just dimensions you jump from level to level killing demons in a arena with no story or a goal.

    DOOM Eternal is a mater class in how not to create a sequel.
    Force users to sign up for Bethesda account before they can play? Check.
    Stop the action every five minutes -- sometimes literally mid-battle -- for tutorials in a 16-bit void, or to read something? Check. Jumping? Because everyone agreed that there just wasn't enough jumping in DOOM 2016, yeah? Check. Check. Check.

    Convoluted, bordering on unusable, map? You betcha.
    Constantly -- and I mean *CONSTANTLY* -- remind players that they're running out of ammo? Check.
    Holographic dog? Of course!
    An enormous disappointment.

    Huge step back for franchise.
    I play shooter to shoot not to jump and find some ammo. Yes yes, it is very intellectual to constantly thinking about which weapon you have to use in every situation, but I prefer not to. That is why I play ARCADE shooters.

    For me it was worst release of 2020.

    For someone who loves everything about doom 2016, as supposedly a direct sequel, doom eternal could have hardly been a bigger disapointment.
    Gameplay, environments, puzzles, artstyle, all completely different, completely goofed. Cliffhanger story from the previous game completely dropped and replaced by nerdgasm bs. Difficulty overall is ramped up, and encounters are poorly balanced. This

    The first 5 hours are a frustrating chore, the rest is a bore.

    I hate this game. I feel like this game is fanboyed a lot because of Doom 2016 was such a great game. Doom 2016 was good in fact I'd say best game on the new systems but this game is trash (not because I'm not good or died just now (fanboy kids excuse to defend games that are trash) but because I have made it almost to the end of the game and I paid $90 for this trash and ofc can't returnI hate this game. We seem to be riding this trend of making these games hard as possible for esport players = good in the past 4 years. Why make it so hard? put more difficulties for those no life esport lovers but make it the same as doom 2016 difficulty for the normal difficulty. It was perfect the way it was (Why change what is not broken). Making games to hard for ppl makes ppl not buy the next one because it limits ppl that have jobs and don't have time to put into these games. I won't be buying the next game and I'm about done buying games all together if this trend don't end. Dif not buying new systems either. If you esport tryhards wants a game they need to make their own ******* games and systems. Games are not careers for the majority of gamers. If you want games that is for ppl with careers than make your own ******* systems to play on. Sorry for the rant I'm just so tired of games being made for these no lifes. Casual gamers can't even get a single player game anymore because it's got to be so balanced and difficult for these COD, Fortnight, and League of legend multiplayer fanboys to have fun playing a dif game for once. One last thing I want to mention is jumping. Why is there so much jumping in this game like it's a platformer. This is Doom I want to shoot and run and that's it. If I wanted to play mario or halo I would buy those games. This is why games as a whole has lost so much from it's fanbase and most ppl has stopped playing games. Stop catering to these loser YouTubers and Esporters and make games for your fans. Your wasting money paying them to play it and say good things about it because ppl are figuring it out. That don't care what these youtubers or esports losers thinks about your games that are trash! Expand

    The game is nothing like the DOOM 2016 game. DOOM Eternal is terrible. Poor coloring, poor HUD, terrible upgrade system, controls seem laggy throughout the entire playthrough. And platforming.. ¡REALLY!? This entire game was a waste of design and money.

    Overrated as hell, the shooting feels floaty, the bullets has no impact and kind of just clips through enemies, it's also a little repetitive with no stories, and the music is too damn loud, although that's just me not liking metal.

    Schlecht, schlechter Doom.

    Finished the game and...it's a complete pile of garbage. Annoying from start to finish, the devs should be ashamed. I don't dish out 0's lightly, but this game makes me so angry that any positive aspects to the game are not taken into consideration here.

    Dear top Zenimax executives! Please fire those "genius" people who decided to strip Doom player of ammo, and force him to run after mobs with chainsaw to get some. This completely destroys the gameplay, this is anything but NOT a legendary shooter game any more. This is not a Doom which I enjoyed since 1994. Aside from the graphics from 10 years ago the kernel based anti cheat that basically now allows them to take over and track everything you do on your pc is such a invasion of privacy. Bethesda has to be the worst company when it comes to making sound decisions.

    I enjoyed the ending, but it was so long. I had to wipe the sweat off my forehead. But it felt so good to be done.
