The Ancient gods has the most engaging combat of any DOOM game.

I think the game is generous to players with BFG ammo all around if you want to make an encounter easier. The game is not unfair -- everytime you die, you know what you did wrong or what you need to improve on. Whether it's movement, positioning, monster priority or pumping out more dps it's all there for you to analyze. Also, it's not a bad ide a to play the game in a lower difficulty on the first run-through to learn the mechanics and limit any frustration that you may have. Every Slayer can improve some part of their game and that is when any skilled base game feels the most satisfying.

Perfect content for a perfect game. I recommend it to anyone who wants to continue from where the basic game is over. The story is predictable, but in this game, who cares. The difficulty may catch on for those who play less fps games.

This game is for the hardcore Doom and FPS players only cos my god this DLC or rather, expansion will test you to your limits. Its been amped up to 11 and then some!! Old school in every way, very similar to the early doom episodes.
Intense and exhilarating, and the satisfaction you get from clearing an arena is so satisfying.

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods Part One is an amazing expansion to the franchise that brings all the best parts of the base game and cranks them to the max to make a hardcore experience. Would definitely recommend to doom and arena shooter fans, not for the average laid back gamer or game journalist ; )

Add that to the cheeky use of Marauders and Tentacles, nothing says "please read the tutorial" more than the double Marauder fight. Seeing this made me wish Bethesda would allow their other IP's this level of quality and polish. Expand

One of the best FPS ever created. High skill ceiling. High replayability. Next step in the genre. Checkout @UnderTheMayo on youtube, amongst others, for becoming a badass demon slayer. You will probably be yawning while playing other (generic/mainstream) shooters after playing this. Worth every penny including the DLCs. Stop reading and buy this now!

Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods surpassed my expectations and somehow a 5 hour DLC is on par with the entire main game for me. The arenas are more intense and chaotic and the double down (literally) on the strongest enemies you love to hate. They're long and very difficult and you'll be sweating and getting mad and it feels so good to overcome them. There's also another layer of verticality to the arenas as well as more advanced and longer platforming sections that test the understanding of the players movement, and were very enjoyable. The level design is just as good if not better than the base game and offers some fun backtracking and key card hunting and well as having more interconnected and explorable levels. There are also some cool weather effects and excellent art direction in all three of the levels, really immersive and great use of color. The new runes are fun to use and add an extra layer of customization as well as offering some cosmetic customization with unlocking skins for completing secret encounters. The music was also great and it fits the tone of the game and serves as a nice driving force but is missing those super iconic and memorable riffs that would've brought it to the next level. The new enemy types are mostly solid additions and blood angels are a real threat, if you aren't careful and quick, and the spectre whiplash was also a really cruel and nice addition as well. Only enemy I'm mixed on is the spirits. They create these super buff enemies which are fun to fight and spice up the encounters but you're forced to kill it one way which is super slow and brings the combat to a crawl for a few seconds. The final boss was also incredible but still felt lacking in terms of having a way to fight him head on, instead of using spirit enemies. Story wise there's some fun dialogue and some really cool twists here, but we'll definitely need to wait for part 2 to have a complete story. Overall I think The Ancient Gods appropriately ups the challenge, doubles down on fun platforming sections, and offers a solid amount of content. At the end of the day it's more Eternal and it really delivers. Expand

Amazing expansion to an already stellar game, Id studios once again why they are the masters when it comes to creating FPS games. This expansion is brutal, fast paced, high octane and absolute blast from start to finish.

Only complaint is how short the Expansion is in comparison to the base game but what's there is excellent and the brutal difficulty will keep you coming back for more.

    Spoiler free review:

    - Is it worth the price? Yes most definitely. If you’re looking for a good challenge and have already mastered the Base game, this expansion is for you. - How long is the DLC? For a first run, you’ll average about five hours. Depends on difficulty and the amount of time you put into exploration though. Could take longer. - How many levels are there? Three.

Three. Each one takes about 80+ minutes to complete. These missions are much more open too, which allows for more secret hunting.

    - Platforming
The platforming has been improved, and now blends with the environments much more cohesively. It’s also more challenging this time around. Depends on whether you like that or not. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

    - Music
Probably the most controversial part of the DLC. Trust me, the music does give off that Doom vibe. It may not have super catchy riffs like Mick’s work does but there are still some really good tracks to listen to in this DLC. Though for some reason, the music volume is quite low compared to the base game’s. If you really want the music to pop, turn down your sound effects volume to 50% or lower.

    - Are there New Bosses/Enemies/Hazards?
Yes, most of them, in my opinion, are good.

Would recommend. Great expansion, few nitpicks I have with some of the enemy design but that’s about it.

Very fun! The difficulty spike was a welcome change, and it helped me to get better at understanding how doom is supposed to be played. The final boss was a bit on the extremely difficult side, but it was fun nevertheless.

Scenarios are not well designed, they are just interconnected arenas where some ones are really excessive difficult in a bad way, just imagine they put you in a small arena with not too much room or option to run away and they toss you waves of demons at you face where basically you run out of option because they are a lot and hit you at the same time, game is overwhelming and you die in unfair ways several times until in one chance you pass, but not out of you skills but a mix of skills and “lucky”, checkpoints are also scarce to stretch the duration of the game artificially. All in all, cheap difficulty , think of completely the opposite to Dark Souls difficulty. Totally regret I bought the DLC. Doom Eternal base game is awesome but Ancient Gods idéela just like a cheap designed game, it is like Mercenaries mode in Resident Evil in highest difficulty level, that’s all it is when you remove the story from the equation. For DLC it is anything but weak but yet it is exhausting. Doom Eternal really puts the eternal into the game. The endless hordes and your doomguy dying a thousands times gives it a never ending feeling. Good ending to part one but felt like I might need a new controller by the end of the game.

I did not enjoyed this at all. Production quality is perfect so thats why the over average score.
Music: instead of the metal a techno like electronic pump goes during 85÷ of the fights, frustrates the absolute crap out of me. I have tuned down the music to 20÷ after an hour (in a DOOM game...)
Difficulty: they trippled down on this. More enemies in a tighter space dragged out to 5 minute

Difficulty is tuned up sometimes by taking away visibility, slowing u down (in a doom game) or hord you with stuns when you would need to be precise. Sure I might need to get good, but I had none of these problems in Doom 2016 or Doom Eternal base. This DLC was not the good direction for me and not the experience I expected

Loved the base game, finished it few times. Was waiting eagerly for this continuation.
Now that I've finally touched it, I'm truly disappointed. It proposes a minimal content maximally packed with the endless waves of the same old enemies, which quickly becomes rather exhausting than fun.
Overall feels like a cheap quantity over quality product.

I rated the main game 5/10. Ancient Gods DLC 1 is just more of the same but more fighting, harder enemies, and new enemies. And even more problems that constantly make me say "what a garbage game".

DLC 2 is slightly better, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

With three new enemy types and one (very challenging) boss in the mix, as well as three new perks to earn by completing the optional Slayer Gater challenges, it’s a familiar yet distinct experience. But it’s still best to play through Doom Eternal before trying this. [Issue#182, p.155]
