Far too much of this game is repetitive and grindy. Some parts aren't even fun and they feel like a chore. Unfortunately a huge step back from Eternal.

Being off Doom for a while i had to get into the controls again, but damn this new expansions is HARD!!
Even on easy the difficulty is disgusting. Just hordes of enemies is constantly thrown at you with a new breed of spirits that can take over Demons and make them three times stronger and faster and demands 3 times as much bullets. In the end i just got bored with it. Most new enemies

Base game was good but the this expansion was rather meh. It is aimed at hard core gamers which i am NOT...
I will not stick around for Part II...

This is not fun compared to original (vanilla?) Eternal. There is no "challenge" besides having walls of demons thrown at you. Also Marauders now there are two of them to remind you how they ruin the game when they are on screen. Hey ID nobody liked your stupid new demon deal with it and admit they are badly designed and remove them or nerf them. Expand

For people who played on hurt me plenty on the main campaign this is going to give you a headache.

Arenas are imbalanced, possessed enemies are the worse to deal with. Even on lowest difficulty this game just throws everything at you. Especially on a controller its all too difficult to do multiple things at once. The cutscenes are like something from ps3 days they are horrible tbh. All

All in all i had to refund this game as its completely missold it should have been called hard mode and i would have stayed away but to label it basically like a continuation of the campaign is decieving customers who loved the original base game which i did.

This has left an overall bad taste for me and i doubt i’ll even bother when this is exclusive to xbox.

This dlc is overpriced and is blatent deceptive marketing.

Avoid at all costs if your not a nightmare or ultra player. So disappointed

A horrible addition. It completely broke the concept of the game. Arenas are terrible, you don't have a Mets to jump normally, the main idea of doom is movement is life. But here they have inserted such levels that you are fighting on the heel of a wolf and you just have nowhere to Dodge and get away. There is an arena with fog, in which you can not see the enemies at all. Added new demons that also spoil the game. For example, a flying Golden demon that can be killed when it catches a strong attack. Some balls that release smoke, remove health and slow down, they also can not be killed. Or just a blue spirit that infects monsters. Terribly shabby, it's impossible to play, arenas, new demons, music, everything is bad.I passed with disgust, if the second part of the add-on is the same, I will not buy it. Don't bury your thoughts in such squalor. Expand

Look, I loved Doom 2016 and Eternal, replayed both on Ultra-Violence many, many times. My issue with this DLC is that its difficulty is just completely unrelated to the level you choose. And you don't even realize it at first! The beginning seems fairly in line with what you see in Eternal: few extra lives make it difficult, so you have to struggle a bit. My issue with this DLC is that its difficulty is just completely unrelated to the level you choose. And you don't even realize it at first! The beginning seems fairly in line with what you see in Eternal: few extra lives make it difficult, so you have to struggle a bit. However, sometime in the middle of the first level you realize two things: 1. The battles are EXTREMELY long, with 5-6 waves of demons in a row with NO checkpoints; 2. There are basically TWO extra lives in the entire two-hour long level.

Fine, you think to yourself, I'll lower the difficulty a notch. Does it help? It does, until you reach the next level, where you get the same thing with the charming addition of timed demons (if you don't do a specific action immediately after killing them they basically restart at full health), including the bloody four-stage boss! Eternal's extra life system was already designed stupidly in that if you ran out of extra lives during an encounter and died, they didn't reset. As a result you had the least extra lives specifically when you need them most. However, this was compensated by the ability to farm them. In this case? Well, you could try replaying the two hours of the first level with tight corridors for the two extra lives you get there, hoping you don't lose more in the process, but that's just masochism at this point.

It feels like they outsourced the gameplay too: 1. all the new demons, including the bosses, break the pace completely by requiring you to basically stand in one spot; 2. the time to complete the DLC was clearly extended by saying "let's just throw in a bunch more demons into tight spaces, that's gonna be fun!"

I understand that some people enjoy the nightmare-level difficulty that you can find in mastery levels, but what bright mind thought "You know what, let's have everyone pay for a chunk of the story that is exponentially harder than the main game even at the lowest setting, and NOT WARN THEM ABOUT THIS"??

Eternal was fun, this DLC is just a chore

P.S. The music score was apparently written the same way as the battles: the louder the better. At some point the screeches of the demons become mostly indistinguishable from the background music

Doom eternal was great but what is this l exactly. It’s okay to have demons thrown at you but this dlc strata to get annoying at some point the fights are long and with new enemies that are annoying to beat instead of fun. Doom eternal is a fantastic game, I was hyped for the ancient gods part 1, and I even avoided spoilers. Fog in one section of the blood swamps was worse than silent hill, and the trial of maligog was too much. The blood maykrs were really annoying (using more minor attacks than major attacks became annoying when I was waiting) and the samur maykr boss was infuriating. But the 2 marauders in level 1 were not difficult at all for me. And the set pieces and arenas are amazing, except the blood swamps(Called blood swamps, not a single drop of blood in sight). Platforming was fine, gameplay is good(sadly no crucible) but if I play on "too young to die" I don't expect to be rage quitting on the second level. All in all, it's not as good as doom eternal's main campaign, butis still good. Expand

Its Doom Eternal - only with more Demons (because it's DLC). Its very hard but that is just fine.

I rated the main game 5/10. Ancient Gods DLC 1 is just more of the same but more fighting, harder enemies, and new enemies. And even more problems that constantly make me say "what a garbage game".

DLC 2 is slightly better, but I still wouldn't recommend it.

This DLC contains a bug which prevents players from completing the second level. Bethesda has acknowledged the bug on their forums since October but no fix has been released yet. As such, I urge you to learn from my disappointment and avoid purchasing this expansion since you may not be able to experience the content that you paid for.

With three new enemy types and one (very challenging) boss in the mix, as well as three new perks to earn by completing the optional Slayer Gater challenges, it’s a familiar yet distinct experience. But it’s still best to play through Doom Eternal before trying this. [Issue#182, p.155]

Doom Eternal's first expansion, The Ancient Gods — Part One, stumbles in a few areas, but it's ultimately a damn good addition to the foundation laid earlier this year. All said it's a ripping good time despite its blemishes.
