WOW this game is incredible! The dreamy worlds, badass enemies, epic comabt and the whole feel of the game really sucked me in. Never played a DMC before and glad i didn't because the fluid 60fps makes this so much better!

Possibly the best hack n slash game I've ever played. Ninja Gaiden was amazing, I think this at least equals it. Great enemies that require certain weapon/fighting strategies to take them down. The music is good and its perfect when you are hacking and slashing enemies. The game is very bright and the graphics are outstanding. In 2001, gamers were treated to a one-of-a-kind experience from Capcom that featured a rich, atmospheric world, some mind-bending puzzles, great enemy designs, and some truly impressive weaponry. All of this was topped off with gameplay that married that of Resident Evil and Onimusha and put us in control of a white-haired, trenchcoat wearing badass named Dante. Gamers fell in love, and I distinctly remember playing into the wee hours of the morning, fighting my way through Hell until I exacted my revenge on Mundus.

Fast-forward 12 years, and Capcom has decided to recapture the magic the first DMC had with their Ninja Theory-developed reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry. Some of the series staples were gone...lock-on disappeared, the 60 frames per second benchmark was removed in favor of a stable 30 frames per second, and the styles that reinvigorated the series with DMC3 and DMC4 were noticeably absent. It was with extreme skepticism that I placed the disc into my Xbox 360, crossed my fingers, and prepared for the worst. Instead, after roughly 15 hours, I had finished the game and couldn't help but feel I just played something incredible.

DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition is two things: a fresh reimagination of the DMC franchise and characters, and a love letter to fans of the original Devil May Cry. Whereas DMC3 and 4, while great games, became purely focused on the combat and stylish aspect of the series, DmC returned the series back to the explorative, puzzle-oriented gameplay of the first while still retaining the flashy combat the series has become known for. Unlike DMC3/4, which had enemies that were (at times, quite literally) mindless ragdolls littered around the area for Dante to abuse, DmC returned the feeling of hostility and danger that was absent in the series since the first entry. In DMC1 I wasn't sure of the horrors that faced me but, when push came to shove, I knew Dante was plenty powerful enough to fight back. In DMC3/4, Capcom had made Dante so ridiculously overpowered that I couldn't help but wonder why demons would even attack him in the first place...it was a surefire loss on their part. In DmC, Dante feels vulnerable and relies on the player to tap into his power to make it through each stage.

Once you do, and you begin to learn the intricacies of Dante's fighting abilities, you're in for some of the tightest, most fluid combat I've experienced in a video game since the release of Ninja Gaiden Black on the original Xbox. Each swing of the sword has a great feeling of weight and momentum behind it, and the enemies react accordingly. Animations are smooth with no noticeable hiccups or skips, and the crisp sound design accents the feeling of "oomph" behind each blow. The varied weapons add to the complexity of the combat, and Capcom made sure to integrate easy controls as to not detract from the flow of combat. Pulling L2 or R2 to equip different weapons became second-nature, and not once did I have to fight the camera as I did in DMC3 and DMC4.

In the original release of DmC, the game had a few decisions I wasn't exactly fond of: color-coded enemies, a 30 FPS cap, and the disappearance of lock-on. All of these problems were remedied in the Definitive Edition, with the framerate bumped back up to 60 FPS, the use of color-specific weapons on certain enemies eliminated, and lock-on reinstated. As in the older games of the series, the lock-on cursor displays the enemy's remaining health and keeps the enemy squared in your sights. To adjust for this, Capcom tweaked the controls to make some moves executable whether Dante is locked-on to the enemies of not. A nice touch that I greatly appreciated.

The Definitive Edition comes with all DLC weapon skins included, as well as additional costumes (including a DMC1 costume...a very welcome addition for diehard fans of the first like myself), the Vergil's Downfall add-on campaign, the return of the Bloody Palace mode, and two new difficulty modes. For $40, DmC: DE is a steal, and a welcome addition to the next-gen games lineup.

Dante himself thought was a surprise after viewing the trailers he looked like a druggy with a half ass'd attitude, I will admit I played through the game in the dmc3 skin first and i realized character wise he wasn't that much different apart from the foul language and now I really enjoy the new look it kind of works, now don't get me wrong the original will always be the best but I would really like a sequel to this new Dante as well. All in all its a great game and a welcome addition to the world of dmc , I'm just waiting for the special edition of dmc4 now. Well thank you for reading and to my fellow fans of devil may cry please don't be put off by the redesign. Expand

The adrenaline boost when having to constantly dodge then slash and cut up enemies with high speed makes this game compelling and have high replayability. It is fluid and really entertaining especially when you unlock those final abilities that augment their extent of use and power when mercilessly hacking away at all those enemies. I found that the graphics and addicting music very much complement this style of game-play in the best way possible, imbuing nostalgia yet refined entertainment into the overall experience. The portrayal of Dante's personality sets him up to be the badass who indulges in killing off all those enemies with precision and skill, and in the end that's what you'll feel like doing all the time when you are playing: simply wanting to put into motion those sick moves in rapid successions to deliver wrath unlike any other. The story may be lacking in its drive or establishment of dynamic characters but eventually they are effective at inducing that urge to keep killing and getting as strong as possible, since Dante is constantly being challenged and criticized for what he does and has to do. If he becomes skilled enough, no-one will be able to control how he acts or manipulate him for a selfish goal, and you'll strongly want that for him. Hence, this overall aspect from the story compensates for other ones like character portrayal or overarching meaningful themes. The frame rate is even more consistent in this definitive edition and will more than anything contribute to the already exhilarating fighting inherent in good games of this genre but which this game specifically excels at. The weapons can be used in different ways intended to either incapacitate, weaken, or simply to slash at the enemies when needed. A pistol for example can have explosive bullets to help you weaken the enemies and give you more time for other moves. Wielding an ifrit can make it really easily to land compact hits on large enemies, especially due to their devil qualities. Which brings me to the really stellar part of the game-play. Both angel and devil abilities in the game call for incorporation in a useful and precise manner in game-play depending on the time of enemy and the the damage they can deal or the movement they allow. Since alternating between the abilities is extremely quick and easy, the wielding of the two make for a fascinating mix when employed rapidly in intense situations. The action is already enough for you to buy this game, but Devil May Cry is a special package of guaranteed entertainment and well polished game-play and setup. 10/10 Expand

Ive never played the previous DMC games. My girlfriend has, but I have never touched them before, this was my first. I picked this game up last gen because it looked interesting but I had no clue about it.

The bad reception this game is getting? You can compare it to the new star wars movies. The new star wars movies are great movies (cant stand anakin in episode 1, but still a great movie) but old school fans do not like the new ones. They dont like change, they dont like seeing something they loved released in a new day and age. Thats what happened with DmC.

As I have said, I have never played a DMC game before DmC, but after buying this on 360 at launch, than ps3 about a year later, than buying it again on PS4...this game is one of my favorite games of last gen.

I have seen videos of the old DMC, they are very similar to DmC but different. DmC is the americanized version of the franchise and as long as you are ok with somethign new and fresh, you will absolutely love this game. Yeah Dante(the main character) is a douche bag in this game but from what I have seen and read, Dante from every DMC game has always been a cocky bastard who cracks jokes. He is a badboy with angelic powers to f up some demons. The soundtrack in this game is incredible and well put together. Even if the music isnt your cup of tea(usually isnt mine) it blends so well with the game I can definitely say the soundtrack put together in this game is one of the best I have played in all my years of gaming. Its not the perfect music, but the way it blends together with the game is absolutely flawless.

The smooth 60FPS combat and sharp 1080p graphics looks awesome. The cutscenes definitely look last gen, but the game in action is absolutely beautiful. The combat is smooth and fluent, with you having 2 different types of attacks (red and blue) to mix between to add up to that perfect combo.

The story is decent, nothing mindblowing but enough to keep you interested. As I said earlier, the game was really well put together so it does keep you interested.

The atmosphere of the game is great, limbo never looked better in DmC. The colors are absolutely beautiful and really shine on the next gen systems.

Overall, if you never played a Devil May Cry game before and you like hack and slashes....this game is amazing. If you have played a DMC game before....dont just listen to the negativity. Im 26 years old and have been gaming my whole life, I try to look at the positives in video games over the negatives in this day and age of harsh reviewers...and this game has an extreme amount of positives with little to no negatives. Give it a chance, it might not be the same Dante or story line from the original games, but it is in no way a bad game, it is a great video game, one of my favorites ever from last gen. Enough that id buy it 3 times just to show my support.

Also the girlfriend thinks the new Dante is hot as **** too so she likes watching me play it, hell she's even beaten it on her own before.

The protagonist, Dante, takes a while to get used to. He's cocky, arrogant and always has something to say. After a while, you learn to love him and his cheeky one-liners. The heavy rock soundtrack compliments his personality and makes combat an engaging experience. The story is compelling and has a few welcome twists. I don't know how the story compares to the original game but the Definitive Edition was interesting enough for me to follow without becoming bored.

Combat is fast and very furious. The game makes good use of the Dualshock 4's buttons to use different abilities and attacks. There are a large number of abilities and attacks you can use and you unlock more as you progress through the game. A scoring system adds to your enjoyment as you hack and slash your enemy into pieces. As I said, combat is fast (and there's an option to make the game go 20% faster) so you need to think on the spot. Button bashing doesn't pay off in DmC - learn your moves and execute them properly to do well.

The Definitive Edition includes original DLC for Virgil's Downfall (Virgil is also in the DmC story, but I won't go further into that). Included are also extra skins including the original, classic Dante from the PS2 version. Extra modes are unlocked on completion of the game. Total game time for the main story was about 13 hours for me.

The bottom line is - this is a fantastic game for, what's in my opinion, a good price. If, like me, you've never played DmC before and enjoy some melee, hack and slash combat with a basic (but fun!) story then give this game a go. If you're a frequent player of the DmC series then you may wish to check the other reviews here to get a bit more of an idea about what's changed.

There are several ridiculous difficulties afterword I've yet to attempt, so the most hard core of gamers should be satisfied. My first complaint would be that a lot of levels are just scattered platforms with sexy backdrops, but the sin is forgivable because the rest of the game is so expertly crafted. The only problem is that they tried to recreate a story that had been written in 3 games + comics + anime in only one game that's not even that long, so the story was a little rushed.

Other than that, the game is great and i simply love the combat system and dinamics.

While it's a solid action title, DmC doesn't measure up to the queen of the genre, Bayonetta. Ninja Theory's combat and graphic design illustrate their talent, but the weaker environmental exploration and narrative make the game an uneven package. Fans of the action genre may find a lot to love, but for most, this is a title better left in Limbo.
