Lets be objective about this one. If you haven't played the game before, this is a must buy. The music, the vibe, the action.... plus with the new improvements its an absolute joy to play.

On the other hand.. If you did play this before... Its still an awsome game.. But you wont appreciate the new aditions enough to warrant a rebuy.

DmC was a good game, given how short it was. It was smooth and the colors were very vibrant in some parts. Definitely has some replay value. Haven't played Virgil's story yet, so looking forward to that

Skins are just skins, nothing special besides the fact that you get the DMC1 version of Dante. Now that's **** awesome. The game itself? Story is believable, and gameplay is now more or less the same as it was in the original series.

Well worth the money, and trust me. Dante becomes more likable in the end. Not as he was originally, but more likable indeed.

This game reminds me of Ninja Gaiden, which is always excellent. I am very happy that I bought this game. Voice acting is great. Most of the characters get on your nerve first, but you warm up to them through some good development and time to grow, though Kat is pretty pointless and generic love interest, though not anywhere close to the worst use of a token female in a video game I've seen. Overall, plenty of fun to be had. Expand

I didn't play this upon it's original release, so I'm rating the game as a first time play through. Another demons vs angels type thing. People really hate the new Dante, and I can see why. They try to give him some more deep feels type personality which clashes with the original version of Dante, who was all attitude and cheese with no reservations. There are some other cool quirky characters here though so it's not a total loss. I'm not a fan of the story, but the gameplay is spot on. The levels are just long enough to not become boring. The game will give you new toys to play with at regular intervals, so your pretty much learning some new moves every few levels or so. Playing around with the combos gives you style points which in turn gives you more upgrades for new moves. Once you unlock everything the possibilities for combos are quite robust.

The worst thing about the gameplay I would say are the platforming parts. However, I just hate platforming in games like this. You might like it who knows? Botton line, other than the story, this is a solidly made game and this version comes with the Virgil DLC on disc as well, plus slightly enhanced graphics. You can get this pretty cheap at this point, so I would recommend if you like action games.

Dante himself thought was a surprise after viewing the trailers he looked like a druggy with a half ass'd attitude, I will admit I played through the game in the dmc3 skin first and i realized character wise he wasn't that much different apart from the foul language and now I really enjoy the new look it kind of works, now don't get me wrong the original will always be the best but I would really like a sequel to this new Dante as well. All in all its a great game and a welcome addition to the world of dmc , I'm just waiting for the special edition of dmc4 now. Well thank you for reading and to my fellow fans of devil may cry please don't be put off by the redesign. Expand

A couple cutscenes were tweaked or removed, the console versions can play at 60 FPS, the difficulty and rank challenge has been far improved and the additions of Turbo, Must Style and more add a wonderful variety to the game. While some might still raise their hand in front of this infinitely better version of the previous, the tweaks and changes to the formula changed a good deal of what the game needed. Consider that DMC4SE from its original was double the time and botched its additions with 2 of 3 new fighters as gimmicks, DmCDF retains just Dante and Vergil with Vergil having his own DLC. Allowing Vergil to play in Bloody Palace is great and I particularly like his DLC despite the shortness and generally weak substory for his character development.

DmCDF is better in my opinion over DMC4SE when it comes to changes and additions made for the game to be appealing. While a DMC5 is something I would like to see, having a sequel to the reboot version isn't necessarily bad either. I think fans and newcomers should try this more though as the combat, visuals, and music is more than enough to keep your attention in spite of the pitfalls the game might have.

This definitive edition addresses all of the game-play related issues present in the initial release, and several of the story related ones as well. Almost all modes of the main game and the sequel DLC have been re-balanced, and visually touched up. The game runs at a steady 60 frames per second, and the color-coded enemy to weapon system has been altered to allow greater combat freedom. The addition of new game modes, unlockable costumes, and a much needed manual lock-on system that can be set to either HOLD or TOGGLE have managed to balance this title out incredibly well. As for the story, which is heavy with snark and passive aggressiveness, one can find themselves beginning to enjoy the characters, if given time. Dante, the protagonist starts out as a completely unlikable character, but ends up becoming more heroic and cleans up well by the time the game ends, while Vergil and Kat, the supporting characters, also go through a lot of changes too. Vergil's post-game story, entitled Vergil's Downfall, explores his morals and develops him into a more interesting character than he starts out as, as well. In conclusion; While not as deep as the previous Devil May Cry franchise's signature combat, the systems presented here are still deep and allow for experimentation, while the additional content adds a lot of replayability to the game, and the reworkings of the combat system make this much more enjoyable than the original DmC: Devil May Cry, and a much more solid action game. Fairly short in my opinion but the music, gameplay and graphics made it worthwhile and the fact that a definitive edition came out later on sold it for me. Well worth a replay on the game and nothing like the original. Highly recommended.

The story itself is the usual video game nonsense, but in gameplay this is a top tier action title. The core of the game is built around the excellent combat system, which allows for the use of heavy/light weapons, boomerang like projectiles and a variety of guns, all of which can be switched between on the fly. Certain enemies require certain weapons to be used, but it’s the style ranking for each battle (that rewards variety) that will encourage players to experiment with different combinations. The only real disappointment in this regard are the boss battles, few of them involve anything more than dodging attacks and gradually whittling away at your enemies lifebar.

If you’re an action game fan, ignore the silly internet criticism and give this a go.

The adrenaline boost when having to constantly dodge then slash and cut up enemies with high speed makes this game compelling and have high replayability. It is fluid and really entertaining especially when you unlock those final abilities that augment their extent of use and power when mercilessly hacking away at all those enemies. I found that the graphics and addicting music very much complement this style of game-play in the best way possible, imbuing nostalgia yet refined entertainment into the overall experience. The portrayal of Dante's personality sets him up to be the badass who indulges in killing off all those enemies with precision and skill, and in the end that's what you'll feel like doing all the time when you are playing: simply wanting to put into motion those sick moves in rapid successions to deliver wrath unlike any other. The story may be lacking in its drive or establishment of dynamic characters but eventually they are effective at inducing that urge to keep killing and getting as strong as possible, since Dante is constantly being challenged and criticized for what he does and has to do. If he becomes skilled enough, no-one will be able to control how he acts or manipulate him for a selfish goal, and you'll strongly want that for him. Hence, this overall aspect from the story compensates for other ones like character portrayal or overarching meaningful themes. The frame rate is even more consistent in this definitive edition and will more than anything contribute to the already exhilarating fighting inherent in good games of this genre but which this game specifically excels at. The weapons can be used in different ways intended to either incapacitate, weaken, or simply to slash at the enemies when needed. A pistol for example can have explosive bullets to help you weaken the enemies and give you more time for other moves. Wielding an ifrit can make it really easily to land compact hits on large enemies, especially due to their devil qualities. Which brings me to the really stellar part of the game-play. Both angel and devil abilities in the game call for incorporation in a useful and precise manner in game-play depending on the time of enemy and the the damage they can deal or the movement they allow. Since alternating between the abilities is extremely quick and easy, the wielding of the two make for a fascinating mix when employed rapidly in intense situations. The action is already enough for you to buy this game, but Devil May Cry is a special package of guaranteed entertainment and well polished game-play and setup. 10/10 Expand

The only problem is that they tried to recreate a story that had been written in 3 games + comics + anime in only one game that's not even that long, so the story was a little rushed.

Other than that, the game is great and i simply love the combat system and dinamics.

Ive never played the previous DMC games. My girlfriend has, but I have never touched them before, this was my first. I picked this game up last gen because it looked interesting but I had no clue about it.

The bad reception this game is getting? You can compare it to the new star wars movies. The new star wars movies are great movies (cant stand anakin in episode 1, but still a great movie) but old school fans do not like the new ones. They dont like change, they dont like seeing something they loved released in a new day and age. Thats what happened with DmC.

As I have said, I have never played a DMC game before DmC, but after buying this on 360 at launch, than ps3 about a year later, than buying it again on PS4...this game is one of my favorite games of last gen.

I have seen videos of the old DMC, they are very similar to DmC but different. DmC is the americanized version of the franchise and as long as you are ok with somethign new and fresh, you will absolutely love this game. Yeah Dante(the main character) is a douche bag in this game but from what I have seen and read, Dante from every DMC game has always been a cocky bastard who cracks jokes. He is a badboy with angelic powers to f up some demons. The soundtrack in this game is incredible and well put together. Even if the music isnt your cup of tea(usually isnt mine) it blends so well with the game I can definitely say the soundtrack put together in this game is one of the best I have played in all my years of gaming. Its not the perfect music, but the way it blends together with the game is absolutely flawless.

The smooth 60FPS combat and sharp 1080p graphics looks awesome. The cutscenes definitely look last gen, but the game in action is absolutely beautiful. The combat is smooth and fluent, with you having 2 different types of attacks (red and blue) to mix between to add up to that perfect combo.

The story is decent, nothing mindblowing but enough to keep you interested. As I said earlier, the game was really well put together so it does keep you interested.

The atmosphere of the game is great, limbo never looked better in DmC. The colors are absolutely beautiful and really shine on the next gen systems.

Overall, if you never played a Devil May Cry game before and you like hack and slashes....this game is amazing. If you have played a DMC game before....dont just listen to the negativity. Im 26 years old and have been gaming my whole life, I try to look at the positives in video games over the negatives in this day and age of harsh reviewers...and this game has an extreme amount of positives with little to no negatives. Give it a chance, it might not be the same Dante or story line from the original games, but it is in no way a bad game, it is a great video game, one of my favorites ever from last gen. Enough that id buy it 3 times just to show my support.

Also the girlfriend thinks the new Dante is hot as **** too so she likes watching me play it, hell she's even beaten it on her own before.

The only thing that stops it from being perfect is its lack of totally new story content and the new costumes (Of which there are 2) are skins from the old Devil May Cry games. It would of been nice to see some completely new skins mixed in with the rest but what we got is definitely worth the cost of admission

They added Dante must die, balances to the gameplay and combat, bloody palace, etc worth the buy. besides a lackluster story and not so great dialogue.

The protagonist, Dante, takes a while to get used to. He's cocky, arrogant and always has something to say. After a while, you learn to love him and his cheeky one-liners. The heavy rock soundtrack compliments his personality and makes combat an engaging experience. The story is compelling and has a few welcome twists. I don't know how the story compares to the original game but the Definitive Edition was interesting enough for me to follow without becoming bored.

Combat is fast and very furious. The game makes good use of the Dualshock 4's buttons to use different abilities and attacks. There are a large number of abilities and attacks you can use and you unlock more as you progress through the game. A scoring system adds to your enjoyment as you hack and slash your enemy into pieces. As I said, combat is fast (and there's an option to make the game go 20% faster) so you need to think on the spot. Button bashing doesn't pay off in DmC - learn your moves and execute them properly to do well.

The Definitive Edition includes original DLC for Virgil's Downfall (Virgil is also in the DmC story, but I won't go further into that). Included are also extra skins including the original, classic Dante from the PS2 version. Extra modes are unlocked on completion of the game. Total game time for the main story was about 13 hours for me.

The bottom line is - this is a fantastic game for, what's in my opinion, a good price. If, like me, you've never played DmC before and enjoy some melee, hack and slash combat with a basic (but fun!) story then give this game a go. If you're a frequent player of the DmC series then you may wish to check the other reviews here to get a bit more of an idea about what's changed.

I am a big supporter of these games being re-released because then I can put away my old consoles and just have out the two. DMC Definitive Edition is no different. Now I am a big fan of this reboot of Devil May Cry. I was a fan of the original series and I think that this breathed fresh air into the series while keeping the crazy, silly, mayhem intact. This review will be a bit different, I will discuss the changes they made to the original game and then go into detail on the DLC Vergils Downfall, and then give a score of the overall package. So lets get into this SADISTIC demon killing game.

The original DMC was hated by some and thought a fun experience by others. This game touts that it has rebalanced gameplay. I personally don't notice too many changes to that besides the fact that now some of the weapons are more powerful than they were before. The people who play Devil May Cry on the Dante Must Die mode will most likely be able to tell if there was any minor changes to the combat. They added new costumes to the mix in which you can play looking like Dante from Devil May Cry 3 or how I played looking like Dante from Devil May Cry 1. A nitpick with this costume feature is in certain scenes mainly transition scenes Dante will go back to looking like he normally does. I do say that this is a major nitpick because I would be sitting in my office chair going, "no game I didn't choose grunge rock Dante? **** you game I want white haired semi gothic Dante". Something like that. They did add a Hardcore mode and Turbo mode which I didn't touch because honestly just didn't feel like it. The last thing that they upgraded in this game is the graphics. This does look a lot better than DMC on the 360. They definitely fixed the Unreal Engine texture catchup that Unreal Engine 3 had. Nothing annoyed me more than seeing textures not fully rendered in a cutscene so it is nice that they fixed that.

Okay now to talk about the added DLC Vergils Downfall. I missed this originally so I will briefly talk about it.

The story is about what happens to Virgil at the end of DMC, and how he becomes one of my favorite villains in video games. While this Vergil is a little more like whiny Anakin from the prequels he is still fun to play as. My biggest problem with this story is they use drawings for cutscenes instead of rendered animation. This really brings me out of the storyline, because I personally hate that lazy **** I don't want to see some storyboard I want to see a cutscene or nothing at all. In saying that I will say this story does make me want to play more games as a villain because the end of this is so badass I was left wanting more.

The gameplay is a little different. He can't do a lot of what Dante can. Mainly double jump; the lack of a double jump after I just played the entire game with it drove me nuts. His combat is a little less smooth. I found myself getting hit because the animation to the move he was doing was too slow. Being that his combat is slower I didn't get the combo meter as high as I would with Dante. I do appreciate that they made his fighting style different, I just wish they spent more time refining it. They add a couple new enemies, like some vagina face gorilla monster, and these disappearing crow things, but overall you fight the same porcelain baby faced demons from DMC.

Overall the DMC definitive package is for newcomers or fans of the 2013 game. If you hated DMC I don't see this game being drastically different enough to change anyones' opinion. I personally loved playing DMC again and my only complaint would be with the DLCs gameplay. I give this a 4/5. For forty dollars this isn't a bad game to revisit. I leave of course with a question. Will we ever get PS2 games like (Devil May Cry 1, 2, and 3) on the PS4, Xbox One?

The definitive edition to the divisive reboot could have easily angered the fanbase more by simply porting the original game to the current gen platform. However Ninja theory decided to listen to some fan feedback and made some technical improvements to the package. The storyline is pretty much the same with the exception of a new cutscene which tries to explain why Vergil killed Lilith and Mundus spawn but the extra cutscene gives little more of a throwaway line than an actual expansion. One thing that I did forget to mention in my last review of when the game first launched was the humor. It is low brow but I would be lying if I said I didn't chuckle with some of new Dante's sarcasm. The social commentary is mixed since it is obvious that it does have a heavy emphasis on liberal ideology but there is also some profound statements as well although they do fall into the trap of being cliched. This game will not only anger fans of the original game but it will also anger those who probably follow on the right side of the political scale (That is not the case for me because I admittedly have a few liberal biases).
    Game Play:
One of the problems with the first release was that it only ran at 30fps. Thankfully this version of the game has increased to 60 fps which makes the combat far more responsive. They even added a lock on system to make it much easier to hit the enemy that you want to hit. The color coding is no longer required but to maintain your combos but it still shows its presence by hitting the right colored enemy with the right colored weapon though. It should be commened that Ninja thoery tried to fix one of the many complaints but it more like puting on a band aid than an actually lean up. For those who thought the first release was rundown Devil May Cry game this package does contain hardcore mode which does make it feel more like a traditional Devil May Cry experience. Especially on higher difficulties it could create some intense battles which could keep you on the edge of your toes. If you are willing to give the game anther chance it could give you what you are looking for in a mechanic sense, but if you are a purist of the series than the definitive edition will not change your mind.

In 2001, gamers were treated to a one-of-a-kind experience from Capcom that featured a rich, atmospheric world, some mind-bending puzzles, great enemy designs, and some truly impressive weaponry. All of this was topped off with gameplay that married that of Resident Evil and Onimusha and put us in control of a white-haired, trenchcoat wearing badass named Dante. Gamers fell in love, and I distinctly remember playing into the wee hours of the morning, fighting my way through Hell until I exacted my revenge on Mundus.

Fast-forward 12 years, and Capcom has decided to recapture the magic the first DMC had with their Ninja Theory-developed reboot, DmC: Devil May Cry. Some of the series staples were gone...lock-on disappeared, the 60 frames per second benchmark was removed in favor of a stable 30 frames per second, and the styles that reinvigorated the series with DMC3 and DMC4 were noticeably absent. It was with extreme skepticism that I placed the disc into my Xbox 360, crossed my fingers, and prepared for the worst. Instead, after roughly 15 hours, I had finished the game and couldn't help but feel I just played something incredible.

DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition is two things: a fresh reimagination of the DMC franchise and characters, and a love letter to fans of the original Devil May Cry. Whereas DMC3 and 4, while great games, became purely focused on the combat and stylish aspect of the series, DmC returned the series back to the explorative, puzzle-oriented gameplay of the first while still retaining the flashy combat the series has become known for. Unlike DMC3/4, which had enemies that were (at times, quite literally) mindless ragdolls littered around the area for Dante to abuse, DmC returned the feeling of hostility and danger that was absent in the series since the first entry. In DMC1 I wasn't sure of the horrors that faced me but, when push came to shove, I knew Dante was plenty powerful enough to fight back. In DMC3/4, Capcom had made Dante so ridiculously overpowered that I couldn't help but wonder why demons would even attack him in the first place...it was a surefire loss on their part. In DmC, Dante feels vulnerable and relies on the player to tap into his power to make it through each stage.

Once you do, and you begin to learn the intricacies of Dante's fighting abilities, you're in for some of the tightest, most fluid combat I've experienced in a video game since the release of Ninja Gaiden Black on the original Xbox. Each swing of the sword has a great feeling of weight and momentum behind it, and the enemies react accordingly. Animations are smooth with no noticeable hiccups or skips, and the crisp sound design accents the feeling of "oomph" behind each blow. The varied weapons add to the complexity of the combat, and Capcom made sure to integrate easy controls as to not detract from the flow of combat. Pulling L2 or R2 to equip different weapons became second-nature, and not once did I have to fight the camera as I did in DMC3 and DMC4.

In the original release of DmC, the game had a few decisions I wasn't exactly fond of: color-coded enemies, a 30 FPS cap, and the disappearance of lock-on. All of these problems were remedied in the Definitive Edition, with the framerate bumped back up to 60 FPS, the use of color-specific weapons on certain enemies eliminated, and lock-on reinstated. As in the older games of the series, the lock-on cursor displays the enemy's remaining health and keeps the enemy squared in your sights. To adjust for this, Capcom tweaked the controls to make some moves executable whether Dante is locked-on to the enemies of not. A nice touch that I greatly appreciated.

The Definitive Edition comes with all DLC weapon skins included, as well as additional costumes (including a DMC1 costume...a very welcome addition for diehard fans of the first like myself), the Vergil's Downfall add-on campaign, the return of the Bloody Palace mode, and two new difficulty modes. For $40, DmC: DE is a steal, and a welcome addition to the next-gen games lineup.

    As for the game itself?
It's pretty, it's fluid, yet it serves a one track story that you in no way can influence, you're merely a "TV-Viewer (without the reality TV vote button)". These days that's a big flaw in my part after playing tons of amazing RPGs, branching story-lines is luckily something we see in more and more games.

It's not even the same series, unlikable douchebag and his douchebag brother, villain is a joke and the story was written by a child who just started to learn how to swear.

Even with the improvements, it does nothing to win me over

Releasing an old game with no new features or additional content is a slap in the face to gamers that screams Capcom isn't interested in anything but profits. I highly recommend steering clear of this title unless you absolutely have to have the graphics update or missed out on the PS3. Expand

Firstly, the visual design of this game is incredible, and I for one prefer the neon haze of DmC's Limbo to the dreary environments from the prior entries. The floating chunks of destroyed structures, eye-melting lighting effects, gnarled demonic growths and swirling clouds and rain make for one of the most unique settings I've encountered. In particular, the fairground, nightclub and television station levels were gorgeous to behold and have to be seen to be believed. The sound production, from chunky sword and gun hits to the fantastic rave/heavy metal soundtrack by Noisia and Combichrist, complements the environments so well. The creativity behind the surface features of this game have to be commended, and some truly unique boss fights will stay with me for a long time.

Combat is good, but has issues. The angel/demon shoulder button control scheme is great, and the change between quick angel weapons and heavy demon weapons makes for a dynamic fighting style alongside the classic sword and gun combo. The whole thing just doesn't come together as effectively as I wanted it to, and although moment-to-moment combat is fluid, transitioning between foes is clunky and disjointed. This is especially evident when fighting the nimble teleporting assassins in the late game, who make a mockery of the control system and make Dante feel totally incapable. Some button placement and awkward positioning mechanics stop this excelling to heights that Nier: Automata has achieved or even Bayonetta years before DmC was released. The difficulty is also very artificial, with cheapness replacing challenge in higher levels, not in tune with DMC classics, especially when the default mode (and bosses) are so easy. There are a fair few colectibles but I never felt any incentive to complete them, and doubt I'll ever play again. All in all, the combat is functional and quite fun but seems severely limited even by the mid-game point.

Now on to the biggest negative for me...the story and characters. This is a common complaint from DmC but the fact that it kind of takes itself seriously betrays the entire ethos around DMC as a franchise. Dante is extremely unlikable, Vergil loses all credibility as a morally-grey anti-hero and Kat is simply boring. Even Mundus is two-dimensional. The story is not riveting in any way, and the late game twist made my eyes roll due to the terrible writing not even setting it up. The anti-capitalism angle is fine but just terribly executed. I, and I think everyone else, would prefer some ridiculous, over-the-top, heaven vs. hell narrative to this drivel, which apes the mind-controlling soft drink angle completely from Futurama. I'll never forgive this.

Anyway, DmC is fine. It has a lot of issues, not to mention numerous bugs (I counted 4 different times my game crashed, all for different reasons), which is unacceptable for a 'definitive edition' of a game with many prior entries to draw inspiration for. Unlike the visuals, this is actually quite a dull game unfortunately, but I did enjoy my time with it by focusing on its production values instead of the OK combat and dire storytelling.

I am not giving this game a 2 because of the game itself, but rather the spit that Ninja Theory threw at the fanbase.

DMC used to be a niche game, few knew of the saga, just like Resident Evil (before the 4) was.
If this game were a spin-off, then it's fine, no harm done.
But the game was going to be a reboot, to the "new generation" of gamers, which didn't happen.

The infamous "Not in a million years" was the spit at everyone who loved the franchise by the developers.

And if you think the game should have a higher score, even when release.
    Remember this.

Without us, the original fanbase of Devil May Cry, you would have never had DMC 4 and DMC 5, which that last one, is simply, a masterpiece of a game.

With that in mind the weakest part of the game has to be its story still. The plot-points are pretentious and very dull, being on the nose they often make you cringe with how crudely they're put together. It makes for nice set-pieces and very creative visuals despite everything mentioned before. So even if you ignore superior classic DMC lore, it's still a naive tale with very straightforward delivery.

The highlight of the game is it's gameplay, it's more approachable than the main series yet still provides a challenge (granted not nearly as difficult as the main series of course). This re-release also gives smooth 60 fps performance so desperately missing from the original release and the combo style system is stricter, the fighting balance is tweaked, so that it's a bit more difficult than the original game. In general it's a modded PC version which should've been released in the first place.

If you come into this fresh you will enjoy it, but maybe not the story and the writing, if you have already played it you won't find much in it unless you really love the game and/or for some reason haven't played it on PC. If you're a fan of the classic series, try to look at it as a separate experience and you might get into the combat.

Overall, very solid, but the writing is cringe.

While it's a solid action title, DmC doesn't measure up to the queen of the genre, Bayonetta. Ninja Theory's combat and graphic design illustrate their talent, but the weaker environmental exploration and narrative make the game an uneven package. Fans of the action genre may find a lot to love, but for most, this is a title better left in Limbo.
