This is unmissable, still so much to see, experience & experiment with. But Disco Elysium does something so few games have done in my near 4 decades of gaming. It feels nostalgic, makes me feel so many tangled emotions & above all will not let me put it down.

What a absolute tour de force in narrative, expressive gaming perfection! You would be doing yourself a massive injustice & denying yourself one of the best & most intricately bizarre gaming experiences ever if you let it pass you by.

I recently finished Uncharted 4 and really enjoyed its over-the-top and unrealistic action. So much fun. You know what else is fun? Playing an RPG as a cop who really isn't the hero of the game. And very little action. Just chill for a while. Start by talking about the mundane, continue talking about the case and throw in a bit of existentialism. I don't think this game is trying to be pseudo-intelligent. You're in a run down place talking to what seems like run down people. But if we did that in real life (running around talking to strangers), I think we would find that people would have some real important things to talk about. They may not be as important to us, but it's important to them and they this is their opportunity to give their thoughts some life. They're going to spit out some $10 words once in a while. So let them talk. And really listen. Have fun with it. It's probably the most I've laughed during a game. The cynicism, sarcasm, irony and goofiness of it all makes it a great game when you're tired with the normalcy of many other games. Really enjoyed it! Expand

The game has original ideas and characters.
The problem is with pacing and overall movement.
Also the made-up names, locations and historical elements makes it annoying for me. They could use real stuff and it would be a million times better..

The best rpg since dragon age 1. As of patch 1.03 game is functioning almost perfectly. It's a fair price too considering this game is DEEP. It does require a high reading level, so i guess at least 12 years or older. But yeah now that the game is patched (took a couple weeks to get the worst bugs out) it's definitely a 10/10.

The game has great moments. The voice over work is some of the best I have heard. The characters are interesting, etc. However, there are indeed bugs. The real mark of a game is its side quests, and this these side quests are on an entirely different planet than any game I've ever played before. It's like every single character in the game progresses with you. It's not like you do a quest, and then you get an item. It's like you find some seemingly menial task, you keep working on that task for like the entire game, and then the pay-off is absolutely massive. I thought this quest with the bugs was so stupid, and then BAM, holy ^(&(&243!!!

Oh, and you get to open a night club. But it is so much more than a night club...

Just try this game, you will be so hooked, so drawn in, so connected. By the end you are rooting for Harry and Kim. I feel so attached to everything about this game.

But, oh my God, the writing. The quality is unparalleled. The depth in the writing is though-provoking. It gets into politics, religion, sex, ideologies, philosophy. But you only get into these things if you choose to do so. If not, you'll still find incredibly realized characters and a murder mystery to die for (no pun intended).
The final cut has excellent voice acting too, which further elevates this masterful experience.
There are some bugs and it crashed once in my entire playthrough, but honestly, these faults are not enough to make me deduce a point from my rating. Maybe 9.5/10 is a better score, but once they fix the issues, it's a 10/10. It's truly unforgettable.

I would actually describe it as a RPG that is a mixture of point and click, detective story (whodunit) and text adventure. The story starts after choosing your stats with the main character awakening in a devastated hotel room. He has a full hangover and forget everything including his name, face and even basic concepts like for example money. Shortly after this he is told that he is a police officer that actually is investigating a murder mystery and has failed so for 3 days. Together with an officer from another precinct he starts to investigate. This is the set up for the story. It is enjoyable, has good twists and works well. The writing is amazingly good and while there is a lot to read everything is also spoken by competent voice actors. The game has 2 unique points. Firstly your character is a blank slate and will discover the world the same way as you do. Depending on your choices, dialogues and interactions the character will be shaped. There are a lot of options for you to explore. Be aware that there are also quirky, crazy and funny options. The second point is inside the mind of the main character. Your skill points represent various parts of intellect, psyche, physique and motorics. Those will argue with you, give hints, explain or comment your actions. This is as unique as entertaining. Others describe it as a party of different characters in your head and it is right. A lot of dialogue options and / or options depend on those stats. There are often multiple ways to solve problems and failing those checks is not a game over for most parts. You can also equip clothing to raise stats, use tools and develop thoughts that give benefits. You get experience points for quests, by some thoughts or through getting knowledge. Another aspect is the game world. It is not big by any standards but full of interesting characters quests, and places to explore. The writing of the lore, history and characters is superb. It won me over and the more I know the better it got. For the characters I truly enjoyed Kim, Evrart, the necktie (Not a joke), Elisabeth, Joyce, Klassje, Meassurehead, Cuno, Cindy and a lot of others. All in all they create a fascinating game world. The presentation is also unique and I like the art style and graphics. It will age well. The soundtrack was sneakingly good and enhanced the mood. I praise again the voice actors as they enhance the characters and story. Even more important I had no crashes and bugs. Rarely there was an input delay were I could not interact for a moment but nothing else. Overall this is something unique and an experience I cherished. It slightly misses a 10/10 for me but I will fully recommend the game especially if you want something that feels fresh and is crazily unique. Expand

Politics touch every aspect of our lives. Games, media, entertainment, etc are all inherently political, but I'd argue this is the only game that gets it right. 9,6/10

Now, even though Disco Elysium's gameplay loop consists mainly of dialogue, it's actually quite... addictive? Like, it's genuinely an extremely fun game to play because the dialogue is so incredibly engaging, well written and it utilizes some absolutely fantastic ideas that I've never seen before in a videogame. Besides, the gameplay doesn't consist solely of dialogue; the excessive amount of options that affect the story, the characters and even the gameplay, and the impressive skill system heavily enhance the overall experience.
However, the gameplay loop in Disco Elysium is not very important anyway because the game emphasises heavily on its narrative, characters and world building.
As for the narrative... it's one of the best written games I've ever played. The plot is quite simple, sure, but the writing is so goddamn compelling, it pulls you into Disco Elysium's wonderful world and it makes you forget about reality for few hours.
Additionally, the characters are engaging and well written as well, and the visuals and the music are good too.
Unfortunately for a game like Disco Elysium though, a text-based isometric RPG that mainly focuses on the dialogue, there is some fluff here and there.
Also, the handling and movement of the character feel a bit awkward most of the time, but it's not a big deal.

    Pros:
    + Fun text-based gameplay loop
+ Deep RPG elements and progression systems
    + Great story
    + Unparalleled writing
    + Very good characters

    Cons:

The story is utterly compelling from start to finish, there are always stories and side stories for the player to get entirely lost in, with innate moments of satisfaction when the player is able to follow the threads and put pieces together to resolve a number of mysteries.
The art is gorgeous, absolutely stunning. It's been a long time since I've seen such beautiful aesthetics. Character portraits all have this hand-painted look to them, to the point where I would happily frame and hang any one of them on my wall, and the style only gets better from there. The artworks for thoughts and skills are gorgeous, and I never once got tired of admiring them even throughout my roughly 30 hour playthrough.
The voice acting really brought the excellently-written characters to life, especially the voice actors for your inner monologues. These monologues were by far my favourite part of the game, such a novel and innovative idea used so well to inform your decisions and give you a sense of how the mind of this eccentric decetive functioned to allow him to solve cases.
Gameplay is everything a game in the mystery genre needs it to be. Besides the character-building, tied to the DnD like dice-roll checks for certain actions, the dialogue itself is the main focus of the experience. Characters have rich backstories and build the world around you in a compelling fashion, and oftentimes the player is rewarded for remembering these facts or clues and tying them together. I also enjoy the way the game handles failure. Sometimes, the wrong dialogue option can have severe consequences, and you really feel the weight of each individual failure, but despite this the game encourages you to press on. I didn't once use save-scumming to go back and retry my failures, and I can definitively say that no failure made me feel as though I'd lost completely, rather adding an even greater depth of flavour to the experience and the end result.
I'm infatuated with this game, and I eagerly await what Za/um studios has to come next.

In my opinion, Disco Elysium is one of the greatest games of all time. I was hooked on the story and setting from the very beginning. The sense of freedom and scope the game provides is near perfect for it truly is: a RPG-based story. Interesting psychological, philosophical, and political themes abound. One of the few games I would consider buying on multiple systems. 10/10

Expand

A thrilling RPG whodunnit interspersed with an interesting world, memorable characters, poignant moments, and laugh out loud humour. I love Harry as a character so much and I love this game.

Disco Elysium is a great game, but can be very slow at times. The main story is captivating and so are its side quests. The art style and the music (especially the music) are very good. However, it is quite a depressing game and sometimes lengthy conversations make it feel like certain aspects could have been shortened to create a more focussed experience.

Fantastic game and a must play

Despite my occasional narrative discomforts and technical gripes, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is absolutely essential material. This is a game that will stir the mind with masterful prose in one moment and have you gasping on the edge of your seat from the crucial roll of a cube in the very next. Disco Elysium will split your heart open with tectonic ferocity and leave you demanding more games exhibit the positively shameless amount of grace and humor that peppers every minute of this cerebral adventure.

With full voice acting of over one million enrapturing lines of dialogue, new quests, and an undeniable painterly look, Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is a landmark RPG. Boasting an excellent murder mystery, it also challenges the player in deconstructing a broken socio-political system and interacting with its inhabitants. The game then slowly unravels itself a dense meditation on the human condition, made possible by your dialogue choices and their consequences. What’s more, most bugs are now fixed, making the PS4 port a near-enough perfect platform for playing this near-perfect game.

If you’re worried that Disco Elysium might be too slow for you, you’re probably right. It’s a visual novel through and through, where 90% of the gameplay is reading. It doesn’t skip any big issues, it doesn’t mind reminding you about the human condition, right after making you giggle uncontrollably; it wants you to be engaged, intoxicated, and uncomfortable. If you value engaging writing and exceptionally gorgeous graphics over a fast paced RPG, Disco Elysium is an adventure absolutely worth investing in.
