I'm extremely conflicted by this game. While on the one hand, I loved the original game and this game is SO similar to it that I personally enjoyed it immensely. On the other hand, I'm not blind to the fact that developers cut as many corners as possible when they designed this game and they shouldn't be reworded for something that is, essentially, 80% the first game.

On the other hand, I'm not blind to the fact that developers cut as many corners as possible when they designed this game and they shouldn't be reworded for something that is, essentially, 80% the first game.
Designed as a side story to the original game, Hacker's Memory follows a group that is always on the outside looking into the original games story, even going so far as to play a role in certain moments that were off camera. There in lies the biggest problem of the game: there's VERY little new added onto this game and essentially 80% of the game is just copy/pasted from the original one. That just screams laziness to me. There are very few new areas of the world to explore and even fewer new dungeons in the game. The combat system, whlie admittedly already very good, had literally nothing added to it whatsoever. And the story isn't even all that good considering that half the time they can't seem to decide if they want to stick with the story they've been telling or if they want to just jump into the original games story more then they already have.
The addition of over 100 digimon from the first game seems to be the main billing for players here. While there's some neat new creatures to find, it doesn't make up for the fact that everything else is literally the same as the first game. This really should have been DLC or an expansion or something. Because, no matter how much I actually enjoy the game itself, it feels disingenuous for Bandai Namco to call this a brand new, 60 dollar game. About the only people I can recommend this game too are the hardcore fans like myself of the original game. For everyone else, I'd say to play the first game either for the first time or again and wait for this to go under 30 dollars in the coming week.

Really solid RPG for those times when you just want to unwind and play through a fun story.
If you like Digimon and enjoyed the first Cyber Sleuth game, you will enjoy this one as well. Only downside is that there is not a ton of innovation over the original game but I doubt the folks this game was made for will care too greatly about that.

My only complaint is that there Aren't enough new things going on here, but don't let that ruin the experience for you.

    Pros:
Nice Story (Starts a little slow but the ending stretch is amazing)
    Great characters
    Solid Soundtrack
    The Memory Server
    The Digimon

    Cons:
    Repetitive areas
Forced to do some side quest to advance the main story
    A lot of grinding
Some cheap boss battles near the end

Hackers Memory is the Prequel to Cyber Sleuth and its practically the same game with a different story and more digimon to collect
This game tells the story of the events leading up to the series current events as you follow a hacker trying to clear his name of a crime he didn’t commit… And I just couldn’t get into the story at all..
I didn’t care what was going on one bit and unfortunately everything is subtitled, no English voice acting and you have to pay attention to dialog at times to know where to be going to progress this 70 hour long game… which hurt the overall feel of this otherwise decent and addictive monster collecting game.
This is a poor mans version of persona meets pokemon…
I would imagine if you combined the 2 games and shipped it before you bothered to put any effort into world building this would be it…
    It has really great mechanics…
But the game itself is very bare bones..
You spend your time going back and forth between the digital world and the real world.. none of which are fun to explore..
The game start with you choosing one of 3 digimon and you set out compelting tasks in both of the worlds that you can freely go into and out of, clearing your name and solving cases for some items and cash..
cash that can be used both to buy digimon and items for battle and leveling…
Like pokemon every digimon has an element attached to them and there for a weakness, and you can exploit these weaknesses in battle.. however unlike pokemon to capture a digimon you don’t have to weaken it.. you simply run into them enough and youre able to create your own back in the digi lab.. which is basically a poke center…
battles are just like that of pokemon it’s a turn based rpg but battles are so easy that you can rely on the auto battle option for anything that isn’t a high level boss fight…
Making battles just as unengaging as the rest of this games world…
And to digivolve a character all you have to do is select them in the lab once their stats are right and choose the character they turn to on your quest to catch them all…
This is where the addictiveness comes into play..
I actually had a lot of fun swapping in different characters and putting unused characters on the farm to level up while I was out.. digivolving and undigivolving to reset them to level one, but at the same time increase their level cap…
This is where party building can get so clever…
you can just have a massively overpowered team.. you have to keep it balanced.. and the higher digivolved CHARACTER YOU HAVE THE MORE SPACE they take up.. so to help you keep a strong team you have to do this evolving and devolving to increase their stats for tougher battles
though you don’t really have to start thinking of this until about 10 hours into the game.. this is when youll actually start running into threats
However the addictive monster collecting is all this game has to offer…
no interesting world, no interesting story
If you really loved the first Cyber Sleuth then congrats you get to play it again with more digimon to collect this time.
Which admittedly is really fun and addictive for a while…
And therefor ultaltey still makes this a decently okay gaming experience
But nothing aside from the collecting and grinding is any good
I give Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: Hacker’s Memory
    a 6.5/10

Digimon is a decaying series, so it doesnt surprise me that its next attempt at a game comes with a very weak story, bad gameplay mechanics, and boring digimon, despite those being in theory the most important part of such a game. It's time for Bandai Namco to move on to healthier series

The Cyber sleuth series has one of the most disempowering and nonsensical storylines of any JRPG, overly reliant on every character in the plot taking turns holding the idiot ball in order for key points to progress or happen in the first place. Just...think about that for more than a few seconds.

What is worse is that this game might as well be an asset flip. Their own assets, sure, but most of this game's models is from the original Cyber Sleuth game. Even worse is that they will end up selling both games twice with no content added on when the inevitable PS4 release happens.

These games getting acclaim is only going to make this greed and laziness more prevalent...But I guess if that's what people want, there's little a minority voice on the internet can do.

This game should be re-branded as an expansion/spin off to 'cyber sleuth'.
Only about 20% of new element added to this series.

Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory. A midquel. A "new" story that happens at the same time of the "main plot" of Cyber Sleuth. A new cast of characters, with their personalities and goals that works in the shadows to solve the "digi-crisis" that is going on because of the Eaters.

The only real ""letdown"" is the release price and some rehash of places (because of its midquel nature).

Sometimes you have to go to a place called the digilab to talk to a person who tells you to go to an area, then you talk to someone there, then you travel to another area and sign into your computer so you can accept a mission from that person, then you travel back to that area to meet that person again... it feels like a waste of time.
The story and characters are ok but kind of generic and most of the key moments are predictable. The protagonist is particularly bland. There are also a couple of BS boss fights in the game too.

What the game does really well is the digivolution system. There are a lot of digimon, primarily taken from the first three seasons. You can create a dream team and unlike pokemon you don't need to worry too much about having a balanced team. You can kind of just pick your favorites and level them up.
The requirements for digivolving are annoying and it can feel like the game is wasting your time though,
The combat system is pretty fun and the range of animations and special moves is very impressive.
Also, to its credit it can be a fun game to just relax with and grind while you watch some tv. With a lot of jrpgs I get burnt out and don't finish them but this one kept me hooked for about 52 hours.
If you can get it on sale for like 10 to 20 bucks and you're in the mood for a digimon turn based rpg then definitely go right ahead. It's not worth 60 bucks by a long stretch but if you can get it cheap it's pretty fun.

No digital world. Claustrophobic corridors and locations. Digimons keep talking about digital world but there is non, and at the end...

Ending is awful, I didn’t like it at all. Digimons was erased from the timeline, human world without Digimons. Portal between world and digital world has been closed.

The fact about ten in training levels can get you about the entire field guide or at a great chunk of it. It seems to not know if it wants to have dating sim elements, by teasing the development of different relationships. The story is a really weird string of somewhat random events at times, with some somewhat cool side quests. One thing I still find extremely inconsistent is the ending, not just inconsistent with the game, but the entirety of Digimon lore. I find the collecting of Digimon to be the biggest draw. That is fun, the biggest drawback is the requirements to get what you might want, might not be worth it, as you might find that what it can evolve to, might be better than what you want it to evolve to. Some things are interesting to try. The adventure may be quite the ride, it can be frustrating, but that is the challenge. Its fun, and I enjoyed it. Expand

It hasn't evolved enough to deal a critical hit to the competition. [Apr 2018, p.95]

Despite some of the shortcomings I found in the narrative and its inability to simply impress when it came to the conclusion of most cases, Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker’s Memory manages to hold its weight. It's saying something when compared to other RPGs in the fighting monster team genre. The true stars of the show are the digimon, as they indeed should be, and there’s enough zaniness in the rest of the game to keep you entertained throughout its long running time. There’s room for improvement, though, and should the developers choose to keep this side of Digimon series going, we could see something truly amazing in the future. As it stands now, Hacker’s Memory is not a bad way to hang out with some of my new favorite digital friends.

Hacker's Memory is a sequel that can only be enjoyed by gamers who played the original Cyber Sleuth. The lack of direction makes it tough to recommend to newcomers and the repeated content will hamper the fun factor for existing fans. However, if you're a long-time fan and only play the games for their in-depth monster customization then it's surely worth picking up.
