My favourite game of the saga. Some people think this game is kinda repetitive, but I like it the same way. Is true that you "redo" the missions you done with Dante in late game, but i don't think this disturbed my experience. The best of the game is to play it all over again with other characters! I recommend!!

a bit underestimated, i personally feel, aged greatly
even though nero isn't as cool as dante, kinda feels better playing him than dante and his story is well constructed

One of my favorite games of all time!
Fun story with a welcome addition from Nero. In my opinion amazing graphics for a game from so many years ago.
Because it has multiple game modes, it's also easy for more casual gamers. While I find the playable characters like Vergil, Trish, and Lady very cool, the game is exactly the same for everyone, with the addition of a few cutscenes. I

The core gameplay the most important aspect of dmc is at its peak so far but the level design, boss design, story and structure are all inferior to dmc 3. Nero is the new protagonist on the block and gives a familiar play style to dante with his own weapon and moveset. The main differentiator however is instead of styles nero has a devil arm that can be used to grab demons from close or long range. His sword also has a rev feature if you hit the left trigger at the right time when hitting an enemy your next attack will be stronger. These small tweaks add plenty of depth and uniqueness to playing as nero. Dante makes his playable return and his ability to now switch all weapons, styles and guns on the fly adds huge versatility to playing dante giving extreme combo potential not possible in previous games even if dante has less varied weapons than dmc 3. The combat system tasks you taking out enemies as stylishly as possible and the ranking system does a great job pushing you towards this goal that is overly satisfying to accomplish. The story is bland which is fine but the only new character worth anything is nero who is clearly less sure of himself than dante but still likeable. The main problem with this game is the recycling of content present in the campaign. You basically play the game twice once as nero and then as dante in slightly remixed levels. You fight the same bosses three times in one run. While playing as dante is as awesome as ever I wish he had more unique stages. The game has high replay value with different difficulties and ranks but the main replaiability comes in the other playable characters. Vergil makes his return and is as cool as ever and Lady and Trish make their first playable appearances all with unique abilities. Lady utilises guns and a grappling hook with very little melee options while trish plays a bit like DMC1 Dante but more polished. The final challenge is the bloody palace which has a hundred floors and has a timing system where the more stylish you are the more time you will receive. This being playable with all characters gives you plenty to play around with. DMC4 gets the important stuff right but fumbles a bit in the details. Expand

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view.

It has a much higher framerate, smoother visuals, few extra characters with their own abilities and skill trees and the same old over-the-top action and story.

Does it feel any different? No. There are very few actual tweaks from the first game, and I think it's best that way. Hitting great combos really does feel satisfying, and with the absurd amount of content in the game including the almost impossible amount of trophies to obtain will keep this game an endless challenge to master.

Your enjoyment of this game and the original DMC4 hinges on how you feel about running around in the same environments and having to face repeated boss fights. In addition, the game doesn't perform as well as the original. Despite these flaws, the game is still tons of fun. The combat is the best it has been imo. Dante was really fun in the original once you got used to his style switching and some of the weapons he later got and Nero was a good character for beginners while still having some depth in his combat. In this edition, you will get them both along with new characters that feel different enough compared to each other. Besides that, the story was alright, not as good as DMC3 and lacked and awesome antagonist like said game. Its 5 playable characters and bloody palace mode will give the game plenty of replayability if you enjoy the combat the DMC series is known for. The combat is really good and really fun but may need some getting used to (especially Dante). Expand

The story of DMC4:SE is interesting and truly captivating and emotional, some missions in the game don´t make much sense but it´s nothing too bad so we can let it slide. The combat and gameplay are fast and exciting and are a joy to play, there is so much variety and possible combos that the game feels new every time you play it. Special Edition comes with the addition of three playable characters, Trish, Lady and Vergil, there was a lot of effort put in to these characters and we can see it, each one of them has different move sets and a large variety of combos and weapons to their disposition.
My only issues with this game are the automatic cameras, it's so weird because there are sections were you can control the camera but then that control is taken away from you and you have to adapt in a split second for the automatic camera, the second issue are the puzzles in the game, they make no sense at all and my third and final issue are some of the boss fights, basically you´ll have to defeat the same bosses twice, once with Nero and once with Dante that was a lazy choice from the producers and I didn't like it.
Lastly, I wouldn't cal it an issue, With these new playable characters they could have added different cutscenes but instead we get a different beginning for each character and a different ending, with no cutscenes through the mission, that was so lazy from Capcom.
Nevertheless at only 24,99 euros, this game is a must buy for veteran fans of the series, and even for newcomers, pick this game up.

The combat system is still great, and the new characters are a good addition, but Capcom didn't work too much on the graphics, nor on the structural problems of this fourth chapter in the action stylish saga created by Kamiya. Still a must have for action fans who didn't play the original, of course.
