Biggest disappointement ever. It was supposed to be a great game, with a lot of content, lot of things to do, lots of planets to explore... It just look like a f**king demo! My experience with game playing solo was completely different from when I had friends to play with during the beta (they were unimpressed by the beta, so they passed). It's particularly frustrating to see other human players on the map but there's no open chat channel so I'm unable to communicate with anyone, so it like playing with bots.
On the plus side I do like the skill trees and the amount of customizable weapons and gear. The use of the Tower as a hub to acquire new gears, bounties, etc was enjoyable - but again, I found myself frustrated seeing so many players but there was no way to get a few together for a fire-team to go on some missions.
If I had bought this on disc I would be trading it in tomorrow, so this has also made me re-think pre-ordering AAA games digitally going forward.

Destiny is not innovative. This game was already done on last gen with Defiance. That game was better and is now free to play. The poorly supported chat system makes no sense in a game revolving around group missions. Rent and return.

No matchmaking means you have to run around on the tower for ages trying to get people to join up, or you have to play with friends, which tbh I have no friends with a PS4...

The competitive multiplayer sucks, just generic and throw away

There is no true single-player experience, with other players always being in the same "zone" as you. Destiny has no IP defining characters. The gameplay is OK but it gets very repetitive. Every mission is playing through the same areas 4-5 times every on planet. It gets boring after the first 2 times you play the missions on any given planet and especially when you fight the same boring enemies every time. Character design has lots of options, but all of the options feel rather bland. Also, free roaming is the same as replaying boring missions but with no rewards AT ALL. Most of the weapons in Destiny have similar names, feel the same when shot, and look almost identical. The multiplayer is fun to play, but other than that, this game is very underwhelming. It felt like I was playing the alpha build of the game again. Here is exactly why. The game has precisely zero soul. It has bland, paint-by-numbers environments that look pretty but have no gravitas. The multiplayer is lifeless in terms of communication; I played for a good while and it didn't pick up. Thing is, even the moments when it did, it all resulted in the same thing - shooting at stupid, mechanical enemies with the same movement patterns over and over again. The lack of imagination in the AI is frightening given the budget and hype this game has had, and particularly the extended beta.

Biggest flaw, as a predominantly PC gamer, is the 30fps. Compared to shooters on the PC, the drop from 60fps is so noticable as to give you a minor headache. Yes, the barren environments are nice to look at it crisp HD and pop-in isn't an issue, but none of that matters with the overall jerkiness of movement 30fps offers.

Load times are horrendous - you're talking one minute plus each time. I wondered whether it was just my copy, but no, it's universal.

Gunplay is stiff and lacking intuitiveness. Again, I can see what they were going for with a "realistic" approach to movement, but it just baffles when you're hands-on with it. The campaign mode barely extends beyond what Titanfall offers; I'll admit this may be harsh and the game may open up considerably, but the lack of story and involvement of character here is worrying. Not once did I feel an integral part of this universe, and not once was I struck by any semblance of originality in this title.

Customisation is good, but it is in no way, shape or form an MMO or even an RPG; the closest I can describe it is akin to an action RPG like Kingdom of Amalur: Reckoning bundled with a half arsed Halo.

What Bungie have tried to do here is commendable; reinvent the wheel and add a twist to the ridiculously oversaturated FPS genre, and I'm 100% sure that there will be gamers who lap up every Halo, and Call of Duty and Battlefield who will be delighted with this game and think it's offering them something different. But what Bungie have actually achieved is a middle of the road, pretty first person shooter which many people will be bored of inside four hours and won't feel the need to go beyond that, and will trade it in en masse, which is a shame, because it's just a fine tune away from being a solid game.

As it stands, Destiny joins Titanfall and Watch Dogs as games that aren't "bad", but it hasn't defined the new generation of consoles. The wait goes on for the true Metal Gear Solid/PS1 game changer for the PS4/XB1.

Which is just so dissapointing, I mean they give you the whole first planet in the beta, when I first stared playing destiny I was thinking that it was going to be a huge journy that was gonna last, but instead we got 4 hours of repetive shooting aliens. Armour and guns are very lacking, every armour/gun I have gotten has been just a different colour with a small increase in stats, I think I have actully seen maybe three different varients of armour. The multiplayer has its moments although it also doesn't really live up to the hype, there are only 4 different gamemodes( control which is where you fight to control certain points, a team death match, a free for all and skirmish which is just tdm but with 3v3 instead of 6v6) they seem fun at first but I can't honestly play more than 3 matches of any of these before being bored. Also the story just sucks I'm not even gonna go into that **** So my overall opinion of this game is that its very lacking, however did show potential, maybe they could redeem it with with a dlc but probably not, it was very overhyped which made me expect more, so pretty much if you can afford it maybe try it but I would keep the receipt. Sadly, the positives end there. This is a game with very poor design. The missions/quests are repetitive and uninteresting. The story is completely forgettable at all points during the narrative. The weapon types are limited, making it far less interesting than Borderlands (a series it's commonly compared to). The world is basically a few small-scale zones where a few random players are throw in together.

This is a game that has a bright future with tons of additions, but sadly I lost any interest in playing beyond the first week.

Unfortunately, many of the negatives have called it, even if the "0" is a bit much. Repetitive, stale feeling FPS, with questionable multiplayer design (mainly chat), shallow story, and unimaginative game play that at times subjects the player to all of the "fun" of a MMO grind fest without really being a MMO.

To be fair, if you're one of those people that just loves playing the same level of Halo over and over, you'll probably get your money's worth, but if you're looking for something much more than that, you'll likely not find it in Destiny. Yet another over hyped, but under delivered attempt at "Redefining gaming for the next gen."

Unfortunately, for the time being this is a mediocre, boring game and the average score of 5 (at the time of writing this) is about right. Yes the graphics are pretty, especially on a 10 year old PS3, but it's still a very repetitive shooter, where you're supposed to shoot tons of spawned enemies.
To add more to the insult, this is on a console, where aiming is painfully crippled, compared to a PC.
If they indeed wanted to focus as much on consoles, they should have though the core mechanics of the gameplay through a little bit more...
I am happy to change my score and the game is likely to improve over time, but at the moment, there is no reason to rush out and pay the premium for a launch title.

You can absolutely tell that this game is from the makers of Halo.

Pros: 1) Gunplay is fun and fairly tight. Pros:

    1) Gunplay is fun and fairly tight. Enemies are big and it is satisfying killing a large monster.

    2) Reward system provides incentives for any activity in the game to "keep you hooked."

    3) The polish, particularly on the character design, is very nice and noticable.

    4) Random events that occur during some missions, such as a giant monster appearing and a new objective to kill it for rewards, provide nice and unexpected changes of intensity.

    5) Battles require you to pay attention.

    Cons:

    1) the world feels very EMPTY and DEAD. This is a massive disappointment considering that it is an MMO-type game. I cannot understate how incredibly disappointed I am by this fact.

    2) After 4 hours, the story seems like they put a lot of effort in, but it never captures the pure whimsy and exploration I expected from a game with this much hype. Granted I still have many hours to go before I complete the main story, so this point might not be totally valid.

    3) There seems to be very little mission variety. Almost everything is a variant of "go to this planet, kill some enemies."

    4) There is very little interaction with the game world itself other than blowing stuff up.

    Summary:

Basically, take the MMO-type structure of World of Warcraft raiding or Diablo 3's bounty system (a "home city" with equipment vendors, currency points, reputation grinds, etc.), strip it down heavily so that it fits the masses without the complications and depth of 25-man raids involving 10+ classes, make it a shooter, and make it so that missions are launched from a world map screen rather than a continuous open world. That is Destiny.

If you've played WoW's endgame and think it will offer the same sort of depth, expect to be massively disappointed. Likewise, if you think it has the same crispness as a Call of Duty game you are mistaken.

This game is good, but it's not great, and it's not NEARLY the game-changer that I expected. I even bought a PS4 just for this game and I definitely regret doing so. If you already own a next-gen console it's probably worth checking out, but if you don't, DO NOT buy it for this game.

Woulda gave this an honest 5, but Bungie score booster kids are making the score too high for what it is.

The only honest thing I can say about this game is that it looks nice, but it is extremely flawed, and will probably only be worth playing for about a month or 2, mainly because the level cap is so easy to get to and there is no character ascension to reset it with bonus stats or anything. It literally looks like Bungie took Borderlands and Halo and slapped them together and made story an afterthought. No impressed with a game from a studio that is known for story telling, and for them to turn on their fans and spit in our faces. Seriously people, look really hard when you play it, there are so many things wrong with the game. It looks like a team of 10 year olds who just got a decent idea and failed to execute it. Don't get me wrong, the multiplayer is (almost) fun, if you can ignore that every ability is modeled after a Halo armor ability, and like repetitive play (Call of Duty anyone?).

All in all, game was over-hyped, and failed to meet what people wanted in the game.

Although Destiny isn't the brilliant start to a franchise that many had hoped for, it's a great game for those who can push through its flaws and enjoy the ride.

What is most amazing of all is that despite its litany of weird little problems, Destiny is fantastic, its combat up there with the very best, the thrilling rhythm of its battles still not fading the 30th time through, and it has no single systemic problem that is not fixable. [Dec 2014, p.106]

Destiny is a flawed but still extremely fun first person shooter. While the Destiny universe itself seems intriguing, the storyline is told in such an incoherent manner that it's hard not to be turned off by all the technobabble. Fortunately the co-op shooter mechanics are absolutely perfect. The loot system can be maddening, but in a way it adds to the game's addictiveness. [Oct 2014]
