I'll start off by saying it's definitely not for everyone. Even people who love Kojima's other games seem to find this hard to get into, but something about it just hits all the right buttons for me. The main thing is that if you don't enjoy the basic gameplay loop of delivering packages from point A to B, this game isn't for you.

The fun is in plotting your route and using all the gadgets to make your way past obstacles while keeping your packages safe. There's so much mechanical depth, and it just feels good to play, it's very polished. You're constantly getting new tools, buildings, and vehicles.

Of course if you just want to shoot the bad guys, there isn't a lot of that here. This is a slow burn and you gotta be in the mood to just chill and take it all in. The story is unique and well executed, the visuals are beautiful. There's lots of Kojima's personality in the world, it's full of his quirkiness. This is definitely a labour of love, which is rare in AAA gaming. It's sad that a lot of people are just dumping on it because it doesn't fit their preconceptions of what a game should be. I don't want to be that guy who gets all pretentious about people just not getting it or whatever, but I think a lot of the problems people are having with this game is coming from their own lack of patience and willingness to take the time to understand how things work mechanically.

This game is very interesting and shrouded in mystery. After playing the game for 8 hours I can say I am really enjoying this game! Something different, FINALLY! Instead of the same recycled crap. HATS OFF to Kojima and His team for giving us this fantastic game!

It's finally in our hands! The mystery that surrounded this game for years was enough to warrant a full $60 price tag! Kojima went above and beyond with this game! WE NEED MORE DIRECTORS LIKE HIM! It's a slow burn, but definitely worth sticking through to the end!

The mechanics are striking for these first few hours as you will find the simple task of walking from one place to another laborious and seemingly without purpose. You will find yourself overwhelmed with the many in game systems and overly complex UI. The game, although understandingly having to explain a new IP, goes about introducing this new world in the worst possible way, by telling you with endless cut scenes and dialogue. The opening experience was so harsh i found no hope in the idea of completing this game. Those that are able to find the courage to push through, will be rewarded with one of the best games of the generation. Most everything beyond that point becomes clear and meaningful. Beyond that 5-10 hour mark, the game play becomes satisfyingly addictive corollary to the increased complexity as you introduce more gizmos, vehicles and weapons. The true purpose of that harsh opening becomes clear, serving as the benchmark to gauge how far you have come through your characters progression. The story is unique and introduces fantastic philosophical concepts, driving your purpose to completion. The voice acting and motion capture acting are unmatched, aside from maybe The Last of Us. The graphics, both in game and cut scenes, are as good as any this generation. The sound design pulls you into the world with natures sweeping ambiance. Moments go from serene, to horrific intensity and occasionally peak with musical relief when a landmark comes into view. The boss fights are wildly iconic and are sure to leave a lasting impact. Hideo Kojima's tone is thickly layered into every aspect giving this his signature staples of oddly enjoyable nuances. The social aspect is not the revolution it was made out to be, but does a serviceable job in making you feel like you are part of a connected world. This is truly a unique experience that goes beyond and maximizes what the video game format has traditionally offered over other story telling and idea conveying mediums. I nearly gave up on this game, i'm glad i did not. Expand

Death Stranding is more than a simple game. It's an experience. (you got to play past chapter 3 to really enjoy it at his full potential)
And the end of the game is so brillant.

A masterpiece in the beginning it can be overwhelming with the amounts of mechanics the game offers. But after episode 3 the game opens up showing its wonders. In a era of copy paste and empty experience a game like Death stranding it's the change. And I'm glad I tried it.

Wonderful game. The mechanics are clean and crisp. You almost forget that you have a controller in your hand as you become Sam. The moment to moment travel and exploration is amazing. The moment to moment travel and exploration is amazing. It is true that this game is not a race, 15 minute FPS, or loot grind game. Many other popular games are instant gratification, low effort games. This is not one of those! But that doesn't mean that that player base can't absorb and immerse themselves into a game that is much more deeply fulfilling. There are so many nice travel details that I won't spoil but should be recognized and it is awesome to see the effects of all of the other players in your world. Very Cool.

Some people throw around the words like boring walking simulator. It could not be further from the truth. Never has a game made traversal so engaging. The interesting thing is that compared to most open world game there is a lot less back tracking in Death Stranding and even that travel is meaningful. As the game progresses you can definitely bounce back and forth from spot to spot, doing side missions, and building up resources but that that is completely optional. I was 25 hours in before i thought to myself "now for a couple of back and forth side missions to see how a relationship would progress." Other than that I was just rolling along wholeheartedly doing what Sam does best.

Death Stranding breaks the Point A activity.....boring travel, travel, travel (or fast travel loading screens over and over)......Point B activity. Completely turns that on it's head. The entire game has meaning and game play attached. Not just the ends of the line.

Death Stranding is definitely a game built with love and care. You can tell with every detail and every word how much care went into making this game. There is plenty of that MGS quirkiness and charm that we all love. It just brings out the personality of this game that much more.

This is one of those games that will be talked about fondly in 10-20 years. The value of this game will shine progressively brighter once the haters stop pounding the keyboards for Likes and as time passes and more people absorb the brilliance that is Death Stranding.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. I have played around 40 hours of this game and I think it is a true masterpiece. Great story, character building, exploration, and gameplay is really fun too. The game is centred around exploration and it rewards you by finding beautiful mysterious landscapes. Some people think of it as a hiking simulator, for some it is like mine craft it’s all about building, for some is riding you bike in the mountains, ... but for me it’s all about exploring. The mechanic where it allows you to build stuff that others benefit from is one the most satisfying mechanic that have ever seen in a coop game. And the game concept is centred around doing good and helping each other. This game made me start talk to friend I have not talked to in years. It is a game that will be talked about for years to come. I highly recommended this game and I think it’s a must have for anyone that Is tired of shooters and souls-likes and ... and is searching for a new and unique experience in gaming. Expand

Giving this game lower than a 5 is absolute nonsense. I could see this game not being someones preference due to the style of story telling or the game play loop, but there is a lot of really respectable elements here that are good no matter what your preferences are.

Obviously with a ton of user reviews, many of the people have never played it before. Many have watched youtubers do half baked reviews. Some read the IGN review, which hadn't even completed the game even though it was their job and responsibility to do so. A lot of mental conditioning for people definitely changed perceptions of the final product.

As for how I feel, this game is a slow burn and a beautiful cumulative journey. It took about 10 hours or so for it to really start clicking for me. I challenge people who are on the fence with this game to Redbox the game or borrow it from a friend and at least get through Chapter 5. I also suggest they focus strongly on story missions ONLY to that point, unless they really get sucked in to the gameplay loop. The game slowly trickles exciting events and better gear, then all of a sudden really takes off.

As the final credits rolled, I realized I had never experienced a game with such a sense of journey and adventure before. The parts that are difficult or a bit boring are completely intentional - they lead to much bigger highs later. From Chapter 9 onwards, I couldn't put the controller down and I pulled an all nighter to complete the story. I haven't done that for a game since... At least 10 years ago.

The story has some camp, but it is packed with emotions and some well thought out philosophies. You can feel the Kojima brand humor and story bits throughout. You can tell that his personality is a deeply thoughtful and conflicted man, while also a goofy side who wants to have some fun. This isn't for everyone as the tonal shifts can be jarring, but to me it is perfect. This is easily his most complete story ever. Even Metal Gear Solid (PS1) gave a feeling of unresolved issues (intentionally), whereas this game gave no obvious hints towards a direct sequel. Yet I want more from this universe.

If memorizing a bit of jargon and immersing yourself in a strange world isn't your thing, you'll be turned off. If you just want to turn on your console for 30 minutes and have a few rounds, this isn't your game. This game requires you to immerse yourself and empathize with the characters. You have to project a bit since saving Amelie is your goal - a big sister role that people have criticized. "Why do I care about her? I haven't interacted with her." Detractors will say, and I agree to an extent, but I think it goes without saying this person who helped raise you and look out for you (Sam), that Sam has a family love for, is someone worth saving. You don't have any connections with others at the start, but by the end you'll have made a lot of connections with a great support cast.

Go in with an open mind and recognize this isn't an arena shooter, an MMO, a looter, or even a tactical espionage game. This is something completely different. A cohesive narrative intertwining with a gameplay loop that ties directly into its philosophy. It is an adventure and any real adventure has highs and lows.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
