The game requires patience and a long attention span. The reward is a beautifully told original story set in a unique world. At times the games cleverness gets the better of it (some of the characters have cheesy names, and some attempts at humor are cringy), but ultimately it is a fantastic game well worth the work required to complete it.

A delivery sim, with a bizarre story.

    Good

    - the game has very realistic aspects in regards to movement and overall human capabilities. Sam feels very vulnerable, which forces me to manage movements and physical exertions.

    - it's cool how you can use other people's equipment online to navigate the terrain.

    - the stealth BT sections are very tense. Something to do with the cry of a baby which makes the tense environment even more tense. I guess it's the traditional belief that even I carry that babies can detect supernatural entities.

    - using sam's **** as grenades is kind of funny.

    - short cutscenes of BB keeps the mystery up.

    - The twist at the end of the game was very cool. It was all very confusing rights before the end, and I was on the verge of giving up on the confusing story. But during the last cutscenes, everything was made clear, all the questions were answered. And the twist was pretty crazy.

    Bad

    - the gameplay has too much walking. There needs to be a bit more action. More offensive stealth.

    - can't explore the cities or facilities.

    - the game focuses too heavily on defensive gameplay which isn't exactly up my alley. But I guess it's expected of a game made by Kojima.

    - the feeling of repetition sets in quickly. Just taking an order, delivering it, looking at a hologram talk to you, take the next order, rinse and repeat. It's also very weird how Sam doesn't say a single word when the hologram is talking.

    - the stealth sections are tense, but they also get repetitive since there are mostly only two types, against BTs and mules.

    - there's apparently like 50,000 people in one of these knot cities, but I never see a single soul anywhere around these facilities. Neither am I allowed to see them inside the facilities. I just wish there was some way I could explore the lives of these people while holed up in there. I think it would have been interesting had they included that in the game.

    - the environment gets repetitive too. I traverse the same Rocky paths, grassy paths, muddy paths. They all look and feel the same wherever I Go. Sure they have their own unique properties, but it's literally these three types of terrains repeating over and over again throughout the world.

    - the BTs eventually just weren't scary anymore. Rather annoying. Most of the time I just wanted to get to my destination just so I can progress the story which was the only thing I cared about. So I just avoided them as much as I could, craft a bunch of grenades and just kill them and get on with the route, or even just build a timefall shelter and skip the rain completely. I really didn't want to be crawling around the entire map slowly just to get to my next destination.

    - that part where I was supposed to take that girl with the hourglass to her boyfriend didn't feel very emotional even though I think the game tried to make it look emotional, because I don't know either of these characters. There was no character buildup of any kind prior to the mission. That cutscene and the crying and the voice acting seemed very sad but I felt nothing.

    - the higgs boss fight felt extremely clumsy to play. Camera angle went crazy and I just kept getting interrupted. Fighting him in person was also really annoying, because using the strand didn't always work period and I tried canceling out his detector, but it never worked no matter what timing I tried. And the hand-to-hand combat had sad music but I felt no emotion, because I just wanted it to end.

    - the whole buildup with fragile and Higgs, and the hate that fragile had for him didn't amount too much. When she finally got his hand on him, she didn't really do anything besides punch him once in the face then execute him with the gun. The way she explained how she felt about him, I really thought she would give him a treacherous painful end. Maybe have him die in the time fall. But just a bullets the head completely negated everything she's said before. And her comeback about "damaged goods" was super lame, and super weak.

    - the baby crying during fights or like a big fall becomes annoying. On top of that, I'm really not a kid's person. I can't stand taking care of a kid. So all the crying eventually just got on my nerves.

Death Stranding has finally made me realize how little I have truly enjoyed video games. I thought it was just normal to become more and more numb to games as time went on, but Death Stranding has made me feel something I haven't felt in years. This is the first game that hasn't made me mentally tired after two or three hours of play.

I think the reason why I love Death Stranding so much is because it targets this extremely specific part of my brain that I've never really known about before. No matter how much work is put into a game like Spiderman: Miles Morales, it can't be better than something built to the exact specifications of my brain.

Yes, I know I sound like a Kojima simp by calling this game some kind of mental manipulation trick, but that's the best way to describe it.

Death Stranding is basically cheating by targeting this one specific part of the brain that a portion of the population has. Because this game is so finely tuned for this one portion of people, most people will not like this game.

This isn't some kind of thing where only a minority of people are "sophisticated enough to understand this masterpiece", it's more that most people's brains are literally built different. By being so focused on one set of people, the rest of population finds it imposible to enjoy the game at all.

While you are probably in the majority that will hate this game, the mere fact that you may be able to enjoy this game and feel the same way I am, justifies you giving it a chance and buying it on sale for around $20.

Trust me, you won't know if you're like me until you try the game. Don't deprive yourself of the potential to find something that is essentially your very own smart drug.

Soon you realize the storytelling is slow and bad done, and the game becomes boring and repetitive, far too long and... uuugr I regret so much having paid for it...

A trap for perfectionists, but not really satisfying. A system of “likes” that are meaningless. And frankly, even with the nice story, it’s quite boring, as it is composed of fetch quests only. Wouldn’t play it again.

Having now finished the game twice and platinumed it too I can safely say Death Stranding is one of my favorite games on ps4. The story is a bit of a mess if i'm honest. There are some cool ideas there but hidden underneath a lot of nonsense sci fi terms. It's not well paced either. The game opens with what is essentially a film and closes with what is essentially a longer film. Parts like the motivations of the villain higgs could have been explored in more depth and there are lots of plot holes. There's also too much information hidden away in emails and interviews that you need to read to understand important things like what even is the death stranding. However, that said the characters are pretty great. I really like deadman, heartman, fragile, mama... the whole bunch really. The performances are really excellent as well and I found sam's growing bond with bb very touching as well. Overall the story is a mixed bag.

As for the gameplay, while it's not for everyone I love it. Traversing large stretches of difficult terrain is like a puzzle. Figuring out what equipment you'll need and how best to use it. What really makes the gameplay special though is shared world elements. This feature is really wonderful. As you deliver more packages and level up the waystations you boost the signal for the area you're in. Now that you've boosted the signal you suddenly find there are more generators, bridges, bikes and trucks. Now the way forward becomes easier. It's this unique cooperative style of gameplay in which you're being helped by lots of people all around the world.

Also you can help others too. If I build a road for example then i'll get notifications telling me that people have travelled on it and they like it. It's fun seeing your hard work pay off. The game handles progression incredibly well. Levelling up waystations also unlocks new vehicles, weapons, backpack covers which are timefall resistant, upgraded walking skeletons and more.

There are also a lot of cool and unique elements which add challenge. BTs which you have to sneak past which will try to drag you into the ground and rain which will damage everything you carry. Storms which can make it harder to find your way and enemy encampments which will attack you.

Like I said this game isn't for everyone but it's really unique. It's a shame some people hated on it pretty much because it tried something different. So many people complain about repetitive ubisoft open world games or how sequels are so derivative and just play it safe. Death Stranding did not play it safe. It tried something different and that's not such a bad thing.

The plot seems weird, but the story goes too slow to get to know it better. My main complaints are: as I said, too repetitive and boring, tiny letters (it's hard to read even with a big tv. I like to play the games in English but because of the tiny letters I decided to put the game in Spanish but at least the voices were decent); also I almost got mad trying to build the first bridge and making the first motorbike work, I ended up looking for help in internet. Because I got this game borrowed I don't think I'm going to play it any more because I have other games more interesting. I wouldn't recommend buying this game. It's better to skip it or get it borrowed from a friend but don't buy it unless you are really really really pacient. Expand

The single biggest issue with this game just like Metal Gear Solid V is its length. I felt like MGS V stretched for too long ending up making me bored. The main appeal of "walking simulators" is that they deliver beautiful and unique SHORT experiences so that the player doesn't get fed up and gives up. it's a shame, because Death Stranding universe, plot, characters, and overall lore are brilliant. However, I can't deny that a lot of times its side and main-quests feel repetitive. I have no issue with "walking simulators" and I love works such as Journey and What Remains of Edith Finch but Death Stranding is too long for its own good.

Make no mistake, the game is a visual trip and sometimes it is quite innovative and incredibly detailed but its major misstep is how repetitive it can get.

Would I recommend this game still? Yes, it's definitely not a must-play and I'd even recommend you to stay away from it if you can't stand even short "walking simulators". But if you're looking for a unique and bizarre post-apocalyptic sci-fi/dark fantasy story you should give this a try if you believe you can endure its repetitive nature. There's also a plus if you enjoy interacting and helping other players, building and using other players' structures is really cool.

With that said it's definitely a one of a kind game. As Kojima himself put it this is the first "Strand Type" game. The gameplay revolves around the main character Sam "porter" Bridges (Norman Reedus) in a post apocalyptic world where Porters (delivery men) are humanities last connection to eachother and the only way to get vital supplies and resources in a world thats too dangerous or treachorous for your average person to undergo. In this world there are BT's (essentially ghost) that liter areas where timefall (rain that ages whatever it touches) pours down and turn the game into a stealthy crawl as you evade detection from these otherworldly human shadows that can only be seen while standing still. This provides areas of tension where you'd like to rush through as quick as possible to avoid damage to whatever packages you may be carrying but detection means you're in for a fight and will have to worry about being dragged off into a battle with a large enemy while losing your gear. This brings me to the combat which is by far the games weakest point. Thd combat against other humans ehich are rogue Porters crazed by packages or something like that basically they want your packages and will try to kill you with guns and various other weapons the catch is you can't kill them you can only knock them out because killing them would create more BT's and make your life harder. This makes the combat rather annoying as you only have limited options to deal with them dispite having access to handguns, assault rifles and even rocket launchers later in the game. This is helped a little by the addition of non-lethal weapons but thats not nearly as fun right. The BT's are far worse of an enemy though. They will often times be just small humans and upon detection you can use various weapons designed for taking them out but the only thing that works is grenades. This again makes combat feel terrible and makes you just want to be as stealthy as possible with 140kg of gear on your back. The story though is where this game really shines without giving any spoilers the cinimatics are top tier just like you'd expect in a Kojima game. If the gameplay doesn't keep you the story most certainly will. If the combat was better i'd give it a perfect score. I just wish they had a new game+ in it so i wouldn't lose all of my time consuming structures i built Expand

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
