Visually stunning and intriguing world design. One of the best looking open world games of the modern era. The post-apocalyptic world design with lush green environment with oily-dirty substance and structures make for a unique sight. The presentation is a bit problematic at times, there are sometimes too many cut scenes that slows down an already slow game. Some skipable with one button, others require different buttons.

    Soundtrack & Voice Acting: 10
Music is transcendent, it's up there at the top of video game soundtrack Hall of Fame with Nier: Automata and The Last of Us. Voice acting is excellent.

    Writing & Story: 7
We're getting into controversial territory here. The main plot is unique and unlike anything I've experienced before. The story is built around original concepts only capable of coming out of the mind of a genius or a man man. The plot deserves a perfect score for creativity. Sadly, you can't talk about the story without the writing. The dialogue is questionable at times, the fourth wall breaking regularly shatters the immersion of an otherwise serious storytelling experience. The protagonist's oedipal relationship with his mother/sister/lover also is jarring and everything is too much on the nose starting from the names of the locations (Knot this, Knot that) to names of the characters (Bridges, Strand, Die-Hardman etc). There are too many eye-rolling moments to take the story seriously at times.

    Gameplay & Fun Factor: 0
This is where things get interesting. As I attempt to get the platinum trophy on hard difficulty, this has been easily one of the most frustrating gaming experiences of my life.

The core gameplay of Death Stranding is intentionally tedious, which is ironic since gameplay is the foundation and heart and soul of every video game. The constantly mandatory opening of menus interrupt the moments of auditory bliss provided by the otherworldly soundtrack. Gameplay requires a lot of precision get imprecise controls worsened by realistic physics make traversal a real nightmare. Whilst zip-lines can be fun to use, most everything isn't.

Combat mechanics aren't engaging, most of the enemies provide distraction from the real enemy of the game - the controls. Moreover the excessive slow motion slows down the cripplingly slow gameplay even further. I'd recommend playing on the Easy mode, disregard the stealth and quickly chop through the enemies to get to the good part, the story.

Overall the gameplay is intended to realistically reflect the hardships of carrying inhumane amount of weight and travelling across rough terrains. This is a textbook example of how too much realism can actually hurt a game.

    Performance & Stability: 7
Game plays like a dream. Apart from sudden loading pauses when you're zip-lining through the map (which I imagine can be fixed with an SSD) there's no frame rate drops or no crashes to talk about. Incredibly stable!

    Overall: 6.4
Death Stranding is a unique blend of intriguing and emotional story, sublime music, spectacular visuals and intentionally frustrating and tedious gameplay which makea it an inconsistent work of art that's difficult to recommend to everyone. It's cripplingly slow and takes a little too long to unlock the more engaging elements of the gameplay. One could argue that it should've been a movie or a TV show instead of a game but it's hard to argue that it's an incredible and unique experience should you suffer through the boring slog of a gameplay for 50+ hours.

Incredible game. There is some issues with cars and bikes, but that is absolutely invaluable. I played on hard and after completing story, I feel just good. Story is amazing. You see how story takes the swing and every twist is valuable. I don't know what to say. If you hadn't played it yet, you definitely should.

Death Stranding has a very ambitious story to tell but it fails with it's gameplay mechanics and fights. The story is not simple and revolves a lot on fantasy. It's good and they put real actors in it. The delivery of the story is amazing. At the base however, this is a lot a walking simulator. You get vehicles at some points, most of them are slow enough that the BT can attack you. You get vehicles at some points, most of them are slow enough that the BT can attack you. Making deliveries gets very old, very fast. The gun/grenade fighting works with human targets, but the BTs it generates horrible fighting. The system is so slow and unprecise that the BT have a net advantage. On top of that, they attack from behind, something your character can't handle well since it takes forever to move or turn around. The music is quite good, especially like Low Roar music. I like the fact that you can share other players structures. The reward system is fun too. I give it 68%. The ending is blocked with a series of BT fights, and factually kill the game before the end. Great story but with bad enemy design and choices. Expand

Death Stranding is a kind of anti-game, taking apart what video games really are and what is their purpose. Many people call it a walking simulator and at the first glance it really is just that. The trick is that going from one point to another, figuring out the routes, making choices, building structures that will help you and others to traverse difficult terrain gave me more fun than vast majority of action-packed games ever did. Making deliveries became an addiction for me for many hours. You don't have to shoot people to have fun fighting obstacles in a game.

The other thing is the story, which is incredibly deep and moving near the end of the game. I would compare it to the best sci-fi films in history, like 2001: Space Odyssey or Interstellar. It's epic but also touching and intimate. It makes you wonder what's the meaning of life, what will happen in the future, it questions your beliefs and morality. It left me literally in tears at the end of the game and I will never forget that.

At last, the graphics and music. It's a delicious cherry on top. Almost every frame in the game could be a perfect wallpaper, it's so mesmerising. The thing I keep coming to the most is probably the music though. It's one the best soundtracks ever. Ryan Karazija, who made most of the songs in the game, is one of the biggest musical discoveries for me in the last decade.

I love this game. It has its flaws, like shallow fighting system, little bugs and glitches, but it's constantly on my mind and I can't stop thinking about it. I was never a Kojima fan, I never cared about MGS series. Buy now I'm waiting eagerly what his next creation will be.

I'm studying as a scriptwriter and i can confidently say that if this game was a movie it would be 11/10. What ruins it for many people is the gameplay aspect. Unfortunately i'm obligated to agree since that is true. Controls on ps4 feel amazing and interactions with monsters (i don't mean energy drinks) feel even more frightening because of the smooth vibrations. But vehicle controls… Don't even attempt to drive a transport on a road that has more than 1 rock on it, unless it is a transporting skateboard. The music part hits really good just in time, but i'm disappointed about a fact that you're actually not able to listen to it freely while being on your way.

U should buy this game if you support the idea that videogames are the evolution from books and movies, if you're really disappointed about The Last Of Us 2 script or if you want some really strong story.

The story in Death Stranding is everything you would expect from Kojima. Confusing, convoluted and melodramatic. The whole plot centres around your character who acts as a courier while trying to link data system up from facility to facility in order to connect people together. All this amidst a world that has been devastated by a cataclysmic event that brought ghost like entities into our realm. That's probably the easiest way to describe the plot, anything beyond that dives into insanity territory. All I can say is, whether you end up loving or hating the overall plot, you can't say it's not original.

The game-play is where this game gets a big thumbs up for me. It is a love it or hate it affair (just like the story), but if it's your bag, you'll be hooked in an instant. The game-play predominately consists of your character delivering packages from one place to the next. The challenge stems from how you get there. The multiple hazards along route, such as enemy 'MULES' trying to steal your gear, the 'BT' ghostly entities trying to stop your progress or the rainfall slowly destroying your cargo all pose a significant threat. However, I found the most enjoyable challenge was trying to navigate the terrain itself. This game does an amazing job of conveying how it feels to carry such a heavy weight over long distances (after spending 15 years in the army I can vouch). Once each order had been completed, I felt a great sense of relief over and over again. On top of all that, the game looks great and gives the overall experience an 'otherworldly' feel. Coupled with some great sound and a decent soundtrack, you have an overall atmosphere that's hard to match.

I loved my run of this game. The cast and voice acting kept me engaged, even if the story was a bit too much to swallow. But the addictive nature of the game-play itself is why I stayed. In saying that, this won't be for everyone. If travelling in game for long periods of time put you off, maybe not for you. But if you are into an immersive atmospheric experience that is completely original, give it a crack for sure.

The description "genre defying" is most definitely the most appropriate way to describe Death Stranding(DS). I can't really compare DS to any single game...it really leverages bits and pieces of so many different game genres while creating a brand new experience. Some of my friends asked me why I'd play a game where "you play a delivery man in a game that requires no skill"....and honestly...I can't disagree with their description...but I also can't agree with it either. Death Stranding (DS) is so much more than that...while also not much more than that. But I'll do my best to summarize it.

After 2020...this game was so refreshing. Where most games encourage you to constantly "destroy" and "indiscriminately kill" all that is around you, DS encourages you to do the opposite. You're encouraged to re-build the a post apocalyptic world while helping strangers...you never actually meet in game. You can tell other players exist...but you never actually see them...but you can help them and they can help you. The game rewards you for helping and connecting people with in game "likes"...but there is no way to "dislike" something. And inevitably, other players will benefit from your paths and structures. Other players will contribute to building and up keeping your structures and I'd be you will contribute to theirs.

As for game play mechanics....you are essentially a delivery man who goes on lots of hikes. And while this sounds super simple...it's anything but... You want to maximize the amount of cargo you can carry, but you also have to literally balance the cargo you choose with the supplies you need to complete the delivery. You'll need to "balance" the cargo you want to deliver with minimal damage, with the supplies you need to complete the delivery. If you take the direct route, you'll likely encounter some conflicts along the way the requires fighting supplies. But if you take a longer route, it'll be more difficult terrain that not only requires you to bring extra supplies but will require more patience to find a route where you won't fall over and damage your cargo. And along the way, "walking" will require you to manage multiple controls. Kojima was so detailed in this game design, that you have to use the left/right triggers to balance the weight on your back along with not only the terrain, but the wind and currents. It's so incredibly simple and yet so complex.

I also find it very interesting that "killing" in this game is possible, but also highly discouraged. If you kill a living being, you have to dispose of their body or risk a "void out" which essentially is a game over moment requiring you to reload from a save point. It's totally possible to accomplish a disposal...but it's also a major pain discouraging killing a living thing. I know some won't enjoy this...but I personally found it so refreshing. I never intentionally killed another player/NPC. But I did accidentally kill one NPC....that I mistook for an in game hologram by running them over with a vehicle. I was compelled to get out of the vehicle and check on the character even though time was ticking for a timed delivery. I was heart broken while I watched his NPC's partner grieve over their partner/porter's body. It was a total accident and still so emotionally impactful even though it was an accident.

As for the story, cinematics, and music.....WOW! I'm still in awe. I'm not going to claim the script was flawless...but the story was VERY WELL done. In various parts of the game, you'll have some eye rolling moments where there is quirky dialogue and you'll question why some character names are so very...cliche. But I PROMISE that if you complete the game you won't regret it. The overall story is very well told and complete by the end of the game. I can't even begin to describe how many emotional roller coasters I experienced while playing the game. I was so fortunate to have a friend who had recently finished the game that I could share my experiences with. If you can share the experience with a friend...I'd highly recommend it.

At the beginning I said this was more of an experience than a game...and I still hold to that claim. I do think you need to play the entire game to appreciate that experience. I know it's hard these days to trust a creator..but I'd highly encourage you to trust Kojima and play through the entire game. It is possible to play the entire game only focusing on the "main" missions, but I suspect you'll instinctively start to complete side missions which will help you along the way.

Overall...I can't effectively communicate how much I appreciated this game. It's absolutely fantastic!!!! As tempting as a 10/10 was...DS isn't without flaws, but no game/experience is. The music and pacing was fantastic. I wish I had more characters...so I'll end with just EXPERIENCE DEATH STRANDING!

Saying that it is a game you should give a chance if you think you’d be open to it, I gave up after 8 hours of my first play through but picked it up again over lockdown and loved it, easily my favourite game of the year and one of my favourites of all time. Gameplay can be described as a walking sim which is true to an extent. But it is more about building networks both with other players and within the world itself and planning out deliveries. Though sparse the world is beautiful to travel through and the idea is once you have made a trip a few times by foot you should have built enough infrastructure to make the trip faster each time. Gameplay and story and well interlinked and once it has you hooked it is very absorbing despite all the walking. The story and acting although not perfect and can tend to be a bit cheesy are exceptionally well done. I would go as far to say this is a masterpiece, though as said before it will not be appreciated but everyone. The soundtrack... it is best experienced within the game as it really elevates those moments but if you don’t like the game and aren’t going to finish it or aren’t even going to get it then just listen to the soundtrack as it is exceptional. It does feel that people tend to complain that most games nowadays are all the same but then when a new concept comes along it gets hated in for being different. So even if you don’t like Death Stranding I hope you can appreciate it for trying something new.

This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
