Aburridisimo. Una historia cursi y de relleno. Absolutamente independiente al juego en sí.

This game is one of the most dissapointing games I've ever played, I expected a ground-breaking and exciting experience but I got a tedious, boring and gray walking simulator instead

Everytime someone says they like this game, they add "it's not for everybody". i think it's a way of saying "deep down i don't like it, but i reject that sentiment on others". Because nobody says that when they're convinced that a game is good. if it's good it's just good, period

Okay so me being almost 7 hours in the game and being so invested(financially and emotionally) in this game for almost 4 years now I have to say that it’s really a game that is trying so hard to be something different but fails to deliver any sense of innovative creation other than being graphically amusing which is not enough to elevate the experience! I’m terribly disappointed!

    No existe diferencia

Sigh. Where to start? I‘ve played and finished the entire game and have been an avid fan of Kojima for many, many years, including his early titles like Snatcher, but Death Stranding is a letdown on every level that made the MGS games so good.

First, the good: visuals and cinematography are good, there’s no denying that. Many talented people worked on this title and it shows; technically, it’s flawless. I encountered no bugs during my gameplay and controls felt smooth. There are very interesting concepts and themes woven into the story and all the sci-fi elements look great. Some of the imagery and metaphors are powerful and touching. The music is top-notch throughout, both licensed tracks and OST. Good and popular cast of actors, I guess?

Now, the bad…. we know Kojima’s writing has always been cheesy, but at least his previous stories were grounded in reality. With DS, he had a blank slate and boy his way of introducing a completely new fantasy world is exhausting and amateurish and all the while he’s rehashing many themes and tropes from MGS since he’s apparently not capable of writing anything else. Kojima’s writing is like a lazy college essay: you write as much as you can, as convoluted as you can to sound intelligent but in the end you are saying nothing meaningful - nothing that we don’t already know. This game does not acknowledge or respect the audience’s intelligence and ability to think for themselves.

I can forgive gameplay flaws in a game as long as the story is intriguing and gets me emotionally invested. This was not the case with DS. None of the characters are interesting, nor could I connect with them on a personal level. It doesn’t help that they’re all friends of Kojima or his favorite actors so it feels more like his personal Hollywood fanfic fantasy, rather than carefully crafted “art” with a poignant message.

As I progressed through the story I became more and more aggravated at how nonsensical, awkward, and over the top the cutscenes were, and I just begged for it to be over. Kojima is constantly fanservicing himself in his cutscenes and had to throw every whimsical idea he ever had into the game without having an editor look over it (enough people have mentioned the MULEs, for example). The other characters are constantly bombarding you with calls, emails, and other verbose text files that are tedious to read because nothing of significance is being said. At some point I just stopped reading altogether. The worldbuilding is atrocious because the player is constantly spoonfed new information awkwardly which totally breaks the immersion because the protagonist is not a stranger to this universe. The player is not allowed to explore the world and discover it themselves, organically. Kojima sits you down in a chair like a toddler and shoves his “Philosophy” and “Morals” pulp down your throat.

One of the most fundamental rules of writing is to Show, don’t Tell. Not for Kojima – with him it’s all Tell, and what he shows is often beautiful and flashy, but ultimately hollow, not least because he’s overdoing it with the imagery and it’s often too on the nose.

He also doesn’t seem to understand that in order to tell a meaningful and thought-provoking story, you do not need billions of dollars or Hollywood actors. He just needed it to disguise how poor his writing is with fancy visuals.

Overall, even if you don’t mind the repetitive gameplay (or the overloaded menu screens and tiny text that will give you a headache…) and want to give DS a try for the story, I still can’t recommend it. Very disappointed as a long-time fan; I don’t think I will be purchasing another title from KojiPro in the future.

This game further proves that Kojima’s “visions” are the definition of just because you could do something, it doesn’t mean you should do something. The staff of Kojima productions are wasting their talents creating nothing of value under Kojima’s leadership. Death Stranding is not worth purchasing for any price, but worth the thought of maybe downloading when it is inevitably free on PlayStation Plus to make your own opinion of the game, an opinion that will most likely fall in line with the masses. I don't think it spoils anything (especially if you are a Kojima fan) to say that the game ends with nearly 3 hours of cutscenes. Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
