"This game introducced a new genre" . People say that but it is only half true although this game has nice visuals and story . This ain't no movie . This is a videogame . And lets see .ooh wait a minute delivering packages in a unfinished buggy and frustrating game aint fun . Its seems like it pushes creativity down you throat but all feel the same .

While Death Stranding is gorgeous and chalk full of lengthy cutscenes that are reminiscent of past metal gear titles, it's sorely lacking in gameplay and, in truth, this game doesn't even seem to care about providing the player with an enjoyable experience until you're many hours in. This game is such an embarrassment to Kojima's legacy and a warning to game makers everywhere.

There is a reason you are walking and delivering packages. As it is a hideo Kojima game expect a game that is 60 percent movie and 40 percent playable movie haha. It's a very story driven game, if you don't care about the world and the events going on in that world you will in no way care about this game. If you like to sink yourself Into a game and immerse yourself in its world this game does great job of that. The story is weird and little out there but so amazing. The graphics are great, the cut scenes look amazing and the world you roam around in is equally as beautiful. The online component of helping each other and being able to leave tools in other plays games and such is much cooler than it initially sounds. Down sides the fighting mechanics seem like a bit of an after thought. The constant reminder about the metaphor of strands and rope gets tiresome pretty quick. If you love story driven games this is a great choice. Expand

A game that has shooting and is not optimized for shooting; It has stealth but you carry a baby that cries at the most inappropriate times; It has vehicles but is not optimized for driving or piloting. And a boring and unnecessary drama! Repetitive and predictable! Only Kojima could go out with these things!

After being completely underwhelmed by the same game mechanics over and over form other games in my library, I felt that I needed something completely different, which led me to retry playing the aforementioned game. I'm glad I did, because after what may be considered a long drawl up until chapter 4, the game becomes a true masterpiece.
It's so much more than what I imagined it to be, and so engrossing that I needed to share it with you guys.
Kojima is truly a master of his craft, and is in top form in this particular game.
Guys, don't let the first chapters dissuade you, because you will be missing out on something truly amazing.
And on a side note, the Social engine for this game is the best I've seen in a long time because it never takes you out of the atmospheric eerie feeling of the game while bringing the best out of people. Love it!! To bad the sequel is only for the Ps5.

In typical Sony fashion, they try to sell a "walking simulator w good graphics" as the next big thing. The graphics are good sure, but idk how you could screw graphics up in a game where everything is pre rendered lmao.

Downgraded my review after playing quite a bit. Initially interesting but incredibly tedious. My life is boring enough. I don’t need to pay for further dullness. After about five hours the novelty wears off and you realize there is nothing there. Also don’t trust the critics — they are scared of being honest. This game is dreadful. Wish I could get a refund.

Whoever thought doing the delivery quests from MMOs was fun, and needed to have even more nonsense and trivial busywork added to it? Well apparantly, Kojima did.

This is a walking simulator, if walking was made into a painful chore.

That isn't news to 99.9% of you, but it helps to explain the context as to why this game is getting very polarising reviews. Very few reviews are just based on their view of the actual game - they are either big gaming websites who are slapping a 10 on it by default because of who made it, or Kojima 'fan boys' who are doing the same, or people bandwagonning on the 'walking simulator' meme since pre-release footage became available.

As for me, I'm none of those things. This is an honest review. I'm reviewing this as a game - not a 'Kojima' game; just simply as a game.

Death Stranding is visually absolutely amazing in technical terms - everything is crisp, sharp and beautifully rendered. Everything is aesthetically in place and nothing sticks out like a sore thumb. That said, Death Stranding is also visually bland, by design. It's meant to look desolate and it certainly is, but when you combine that with the drudgery of the gameplay then it's a very taxing combination for the player.

Because the gameplay is dull. 80% of the game consists of carrying stuff from one location to the next, using the trigger buttons on the pad to balance your walking and occasionally stopping to mollify a baby strapped to your chest. You get vehicles, but the moment you do the next section of gameplay is unsuited to the vehicle you just 'unlocked', so you end up not caring about getting vehicles. 10% of it is running from harmless enemies - both human and supernatural - because combat is fiddly (yet somehow simultaneously easy) and unrewarding, so you avoid it when you can. Merely walking presents ten times the challenge combat does. There isn't multiplayer, but instead a Dark Souls sign-system-esque 'connected world' - if a player drops a ladder in his game, you can use it in yours. It's a nice feature that adds a bit of vibrancy to the desolate world and probably the one thing other devs could take away from this and use in future games.

The other 10% of the title is cutscenes. Lots and lots of cutscenes, massive on exposition. I'm probably being generous at 10% to be honest. Again, all expertly rendered, but poorly executed.

Obviously no spoilers here on story, but let's just say that there is zero subtlety throughout. There are characters such as Fragile and Die-Hardman - they are their names, not nicknames as you'd expect, and they are presented as such with not a hint of sarcasm or self-awareness. They simply spell out explicitly the main trait of the character. The main character is a porter who builds bridges, so naturally his name is Sam Porter Bridges. This is the level of 'on the nose' we're dealing with here.

The ridiculousness narrative plays in to the general weirdness on show here. Everything seems to exist as a random idea the developer had and threw in, all mixed together in a hodge-podge of pure nonsense. For every good idea - the concept of firing bullets from your own blood to harm the supernatural, for example - there's a stupid one - like a canteen that converts rain into Monster Energy. Yes, actual Monster Energy - it's not a myth; this is the most egregious and blatant product placement you will ever find in any video game. It's not just aesthetic; it's a core energy mechanic.

There is the basis for a good game in here, but the final product isn't that. It is extremely pretentious, much more intent on creating art for the sake of art rather than a fun experience for the consumer. It has it's moments - around 15-20 hours in you get in to a flow and the pace quickens, only for it to die a death moments later as you once again trudge from A to B for hours on end, solely for the reward of more exposition-packed cutscenes featuring ridiculous, totally unrelatable characters, ultimately leading to an extremely obvious twist ending that uses bizarre visuals to hide the lack of depth the story had.

It's a difficult game to review without spoilers, but to boil it down to one thing, I'll say this - it isn't worth your time and money. Pick it up at a hefty discount if you have nothing else to play or wait for it to be free on PS Plus. Even then, if you find it dull a few hours in, I can assure you that there is no point in persisting - it doesn't improve.

The developer has said the reason for the mixed reviews is that some people "don't get it" - I don't think that's the case. I "get it" alright - the developer wanted to create a weird, trippy movie experience that got people talking. In that, they have achieved what they aimed for in spades. It's a shame, then, that they forgot to create a game to go along with that experience.

EDIT: Originally scored this a 4, but honestly a shade too high - revised to a 3.

Lets just go through the infantile character names, and yes, each name does neatly quantify their purpose in the plot; Heartman, Mama, Deadman, Fragile, Die-Hardman. Plot and writing are a common misfire when it comes to video games, but its such a problem in this game because it forces it down your throat with overly long cut-scenes and an overabundance of unnecessary overly cinematic sequences. How often do i need to see the same thank you message from the delivery terminal, or actually watch the mundane Norman Reedus character plonk his load on the conveyor belt? Once, maybe? A) weirdness mystery and intrigue and B) open world traversal - could support C) Exploration and discovery! These should have been the mechanics which tell the story! Players could have felt involved in uncovering the weird mystery and piecing together the lore of this admittedly fascinating world, but no. Do not play to explore and piece together the mystery of it. Do repetitive package delivery for hours, then watch as minor celebrities exposit a weird backstory you can't play.

Just shut up while Kojima takes these discoveries which could have been your achievements and instead passively beats you over the head with intended meanings. Literally taking all the fun out of it.

I played about 20 hours of Death Stranding, but figured out in the first hour that it wasn't really for lovers of great writing. I then sold my copy (while the value is still high) and will rebuy it when it's under $10.

I played about 20 hours of Death Stranding, but figured out in the first hour that it wasn't really for lovers of great writing. I then sold my copy (while the value is still high) and will rebuy it when it's under $10.

I plan to revisit the game later, but for now, here's my mid-game impressions.

Your primary goal is delivering packages, and that gameplay mechanic is actually done pretty well. Though it is slow paced and isn't for everyone. You'll get reasonable means to improve your package delivery capabilities as you play, such as vehicles and augments for your body. This keeps the package delivery interesting.

The challenges for delivering packages seem difficult at first, but quickly become easy. Slow and steady wins the race of package delivery. learning to offload packages before fighting bandits will normally allow you to win with no consequences. And the primary enemies of the game (the ghost things) become a bit too easy after you obtain means to kill them.

The graphics are the best I've seen on PS4, but It's too bad I'm not a graphics nerd. I'm here for the story..

And the story is disappointing. Specifically, the world building is bad and the character motivations are unbelievable. I should have known going into a game with characters named Mama, Deadman, and Die-Hardman.

The writing is a complex web of near-nonsense that the average person considers "deep" since they don't take the time to analyze it. It's full of random references with no meaningful themes. For example, the director apparently likes tardigrades, so made his own super tardigrade with its own shallow backstory so that players can have something to eat to rejen health (blood).

Every bit of video-gamey nonsense has its own backstory: How people deal with the dead is related to ancient Egyptian mummies. Babies that you carry around can help you see the dead because they basically weren't born. A persistent sickness in the world is primarily being cured by "likes" that you get for delivering things (yes seriously, facebook-type likes). The reason why you must walk to deliver packages is because there's dead-people particles in the air.

Writing backstories for all of this nonsense isn't good writing if nothing links the stories together. The best I could do to tolerate it was to start ignoring the nonsense and keep trucking along with my packages. Although I was frequently pulled out of my ignorance-is-bliss lull when the characters started spouting nonsense again.

I did frequently wonder why I was apparently the only guy able to deliver packages and why they had me walking most of the time when there were perfectly good vehicles sitting in the parking lots.. So I made up my own story: everyone you see is a hologram and they can't interact easily with physical goods, and here I was saving the world, being the only physical being in existence that could help them.. If only that were the actual story...

First i'd like to say that this game tries so hard to make your progression as tedious and annoying as possible. It throws the tiniest thing at you, punishes you for no reason other than adding in almost fake difficulty just to slow down your playtime. Not only that, but a lot of the physics are really clunky, and the BTs as they're called were interesting for their first reveal, but then they just come off as another addition to the mentioned annoying systems.

This isn't to say that Walking Simulators are boring or bad. The Stanley Parable was really fun and enjoyable, but imagine if that game just suddenly kept throwing objects at you every 10 seconds to stun your vision, or block out it's narrator with a ton of loud noises. That's what Death Stranding does for it's whole Delivering Packages shtick.

The story is pretty eh. I think it lacks any real hooks or OOMPHs to get you involved, other than that it does have some good moments, and the actors are great too, but we gotta talk about the writing for a second. Fragile(one of the main characters) has a lot of the most cheesy and one dimensionally stupid lines i've ever read. "I'm fragile but not that fragile." is something a middle school student would write in their rough draft of a "About me" paper. If you're not one for long winded cutscenes, you'll also want to stay away cause everyone in this game likes to take up a lot of your time.

The idea of vehicles, structures, ladders, and other items left behind players is pretty cool. I wish I could meet other players though, but for what it has, it's pretty nice to know you're not alone in the game.

Overall it's a 3/10. This game is pretty painful to play, and I would definitely recommend a lot of other games than this one. But this review isn't over yet. I wanna go over some of the other things surrounding Death Stranding.

Kojima said that the reason American players don't really like Death Stranding is because we prefer FPS games, and that we're having trouble understanding it. I think this is just a poor perspective to take on the situation, and is just a blatant attempt to dismiss our criticisms because it's actually just a really damn boring game.

This review contains spoilers, click expand to view. Isn't it funny how critics call everyone trolls who don't fit into their opinion box; Ironic. This story is a mess, most people don't want to slog through 20+ hours of bad story to get to decent game-play, and more bad story. The story leaves things unexplained to the point of obscurity, and it makes the game not enjoyable for normal people who don't have some sort of paid critic agenda.

This game is damn near impossible to spoil though, so at least there is that! Timefall, baby batteries, the last ever FedEx worker in the apocalypse, and all the Monster energy drinks in the world do not a story make if it's just stuff in a video game. The Monster energy drink promos are almost as bad as the advertisements in the emoji movie; are we supposed to believe Monster is the only drink to survive the apocalypse? Monster is in this game so much I thought one of the cans might get up and talk to the player at some point and become a character.

We need to "rebuild America" in this game because the afterlife is seeping through to our world somehow (how?), and there is rain that ages things. WTF is this story, seriously? It's so convoluted that even the characters in the game are still trying to figure it out, which isn't clever; it's infuriating.

Death Stranding is a divisive game, and to be honest, I don't see why it's so divisive. Whatever way I look at this, it's a self-indulgent, tedious and inane mess of a game. Allow me to explain.

The graphics of this game are where they really missed a beat. You can tell from character models that the power and resolution is there, but they dropped the ball massively with the environments. You're plunged into the game into a brown and green mushy and rocky hillside. You're expected to traverse this over the coming hours of the game on foot. Aside from that you have bland grey buildings where you drop off your cargo and rest. These look futuristic but also incredibly bland and empty. Perhaps later in the game more beautiful and glimmering environments emerge, but I got sick of the game long before that if so. Kojima clearly wanted to make the environments seem atmospheric and emotive, but this fell flat with tedium and emptiness instead.

The gameplay is another disappointing aspect of the game. The early hours of the game sees you wandering around on foot from pillar to post as you deliver cargo. People have lauded the simplicity of this but that is misleading. It is not simple to constantly tap buttons just to maintain your balance during what is essentially an overhyped fetch-quest. When it comes to the menus, things are far from simplistic. Simply arranging and offloading your cargo is a convoluted mess, with varying sizes of fonts that become microscopic in some menus. There is further self-indulgent rubbish in how you're expected to navigate a restroom by telling your character to shower and poop as if you're babysitting him. I ended up trapped in this room because the game didn't make it clear I HAD to take a shower to proceed. Plus, when you fall over out on the field you risk your cargo becoming dislodged too, with one hilarious and infuriating experience I had of falling over in a river and observing my cargo being washed away as I floated after it. Kojima seemed to forget he was making a game and not a movie or walking simulator.

The story rivals the gameplay for the most ridiculous display of self-indulgence by Kojima. I was very excited that the first mission had you carrying your mother's corpse (who was also POTUS) across a mountain to be incinerated. However, after this it emerges you will be traversing across more mountains to activate a series of devices - essentially fetch quests. Shortly after this I lost all interest as many other negative reviews such as Jim Sterling lamented the same issues I had noticed, meaning I could expect the rest of the game to be similar and therefore not to my tastes.

One thing that Jim Sterling pointed out that I also loved were the moments when you're traversing the landscape and a soundtrack begins to play. This is where some emotion was added to my experience and I felt some enjoyment for the game. This only happened once or twice in the hours that I played it, however.

Overall, Kojima appears to have been given free-reign and a blank cheque to make this game, and what a mess of it he has made. The story is less coherent than Metal Gear Solid 4 and the cutscenes are painfully drawn out and over-acted. The gameplay manages to make the simple act of walking convoluted and even more inane than walking should be, and the graphics are far too one-dimensional. Kojima had a fantastic opportunity to show Konami what they have lost and he botched it massively. If he releases another game with mixed reviews I will be steering well clear and I'd advise others to do the same. If this wasn't so overhyped it might not have been such a disappointment, but it is a bad game overall.

Death Stranding is is the highest budget walking simulator. If menus configuring package by weight on different body parts and pressing L2 or R2 to keep balance randomly or else risk dropping your carefully balanced body weight seems entertaining this game is for you. Unfortunately I don’t think this appeals to many.

Story wise it’s a cool movie concept and the ghosts (BTs) are creepy and well animated. So many famous people with bizarre dialogue that is very lost in translation. Why does a character have to be introduced to his own mother as “here is a character. Your mother, [her first name]”, or “it’s me, [weird character name]” the 100th time they talk to you. It’s as if everything is told to you with awkward dialogue instead of showing you. The plot told to you is vague but if you think about it you can get the general idea and it seems cool for a movie.

Graphics are gorgeous and the online feature where you see ladders and other useful terrain crossing items is a cool idea, for a delivery walking simulator. For a walking game there is very little to explore outside of terrain and delivery points. No secrets or lore to uncover just deliver packages. This is incredibly unacceptable for a walking video game.

That said, I cant say that this is in any way a fun game or something that you wanna engage in. I played because I bought it, but mostly I was bored, the whole walking thing is just soooo boring, it lacks excitment, you play no part in the game, it is a bunch of meaningless tasks. Again I only finished playing the game because I bought it, but I truly regret it. I tried to see the positive things in it, but overall, this is a shame, very disappointing and boring is really the word to describe it. I hope other people have had a better time, because for me, it was a chore. Not a game I could ever recommend. Expand

This game is an ego driven project thats left unchecked, who actually play tested this and not find it extremely repetitive and boring? The only glue holding this game are the story and graphics and not much else. I love Kojima, but he's due for a dud and this game is it, save your money on something else or heck replay TPP you'll have a better time than going through this slog of a game.

Final words, i did not have fun playing this at all. It shown film and video games are a lot more closely related than we thought and maybe 1 day a true hybrid will be born, maybe even from Kojima. But it is not this game, this is not fun at all to play.

I feel like if kojima spent more time makeing the game and less time uaing his budget to get celebrities in it it would be better. It really sucks when everything in a game is great... except the gameplay. The other Playstaion 4 exclusives like Spider-Man have engaging missions which are integral to the storyline's progression (as it should be) and allow you to choose to do side missions, whereas Death Stranding's missions comprise of mostly and mainly tedious side missions which you are forced to grind through. Borrowed this off a friend before he takes it back to trade in. I'll admit, I only played about 9 hours or so and couldn't go on any longer. So clunky and frustrating too with the constant balancing needed. The shameful plugging of Monster energy drinks also felt crass and pathetic. Of the 9 hours I put in, I'd wager 6 of them were watching mundane cut scenes, none of which made any real sense, just seemed like someone that thinks they're intellectual spewing words onto paper and thinking it's somehow cinematic. I've given it 3 stars purely for the graphics as they're incredible in places, the motion capture is good, as are the voiceovers, but they are from well known actors so that's to be expected. I honestly, hand on heart believe if this game had come from an unknown developer, it'd have struggled to get 5/10s from most outlets. If you get any enjoyment out of this game, good for you, to me though it's drivel. Pretentious, self serving dross. After all these years, it's finally apparent why Konami actually kept reigns on Kojima when he was working on the MGS games. This game is proof of what happens when you let the man do what he wants without any interference and I'm sure Konami won't lose any sleep they're not attached to this dumpster fire in any capacity. Avoid at all costs unless your idea of fun is pressing L2/R2 a lot to stop yourself from falling over, or really want to experience urinating in a game while you have a baby strapped to your stomach and a load of boxes on your back.

It is the perfect example that a good (or at least interesting) story, an excellent soundtrack and good graphics do not matter at all if the game is completely BORED and meaningless.

Es el ejemplo perfecto de que una buena (o al menos interesante) historia, un excelente soundtrack y unos buenos gráficos no importan para nada si el gameplay es completamente ABURRIDO y falto de sentido alguno.

The paicing is also horrible, I have nothing against cutscenes in games, but the ones of the game are just too long, some a re longer than a movie, and it would be one thing if the story was good, but it isn't

The story which should've been the redeeming quality of the game is mediocre at best, the narrative of the story makes little sense, there are lots of plot threads that go nowhere and the ending is just unsatisfying.

Not to mention the game does not really justify the fact that this story needs to be told in game form, this could've been a movie at it would be less of a chore, this doesn't do anything for those who belive that the medium is an art form, in fact this has the backward idea that games need to aim at movies to be taken serious.

If you wanna play a story focused game, with decent gameplay that actually shows that there are stories that can only be told via videogames, you are better playing Yokotaro's Nier Automata. But if you are really in need of playing a story focused game with bad gameplay... then play any of the other Yokotaro's games those at least have a good story.

Avoid this at all cost, that said, I cant give this a cero, the graphics are stellar and the music is decent, hell the crying of that baby is quite good so props for that.

Death Stranding is creating a new game genre and therefore paves its own path towards more interactive experiences. It is a brave work thanks to its novelty, which fortunately is not a bragging right for its creators, as it may have seemed, but an exceptional title that will reward the brave who play it. This game does manage to be fun, even if it is one of the heaviest experiences of 2019. Everything from story to gameplay is begging to be dissected, filled with imagery and symbolism -- just like so many Kojima games before this one. Entering Death Stranding, it’s likely that we all thought Kojima’s calling card was lengthy cutscenes and stealth and action gameplay.

Death Stranding stands as a powerful author’s game which drives a strong message of how our over-connected society is evolving, and how we can help other players. Unlike many AAA games, it shines on a truly spiritual level. Well written, engaging and visually magnificent, it offers, despite some pacing flaws, an astonishing solo game with elegant multiplayer elements. A unique representation of Hideo Kojima’s talent.
